Got a note today from Dominic Patrissi ...
He's trying to locate as many as he can of the supposedly 13 existing
audio copies of this ABC series (1945-51) which also went by the
shortened title of "The Sheriff." His search was been slow and not
very rewarding.
Any Digester have any idea of which direction I might point him in his
quest. (He doesn't have email so I will forward to him.)

I have an episode titled "The Vase" which was written by the late Nelson
Bond. I believe it aired in 1945. I copied it directly from a transcription
disc that Nelson had saved and the sound quality is excellent. Is that
episode needed? I have about a dozen others that came from Nelson's
collection; one of which was that supposedly lost episode of "Hot Copy" that
I sent you a tape of some time ago. I should post a list of the others here
to see if any of them are also considered lost.

Apparently, "the opera," was from 1947.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM JIM HARMON:

The starry night was clear and cold in the land of Radio.

It was a broad land with big cities, full of tall skyscrapers
but not so tall there was not one who could leap them in a single bound.

Down darkened streets raced a car whose horn sounded like some giant insect,
a car on a mission of mercy that would free a falsely convicted prisoner
from his confinement.

Away from the city, the curving roads fell away to mere trails
across a prairie. Campfires dotted the night and around one sat two
friends, a fine-looking Indian man and his tall companion who wore a mask.
Nearby stood two horses, a paint and a white stallion who seemed as if he
might burst forth with the speed of light. The Masked Man spoke. "Many
years ago we made a pledge. This would be a night to renew that pledge."
The Indian stepped into the firelight. "Long as you live, long as me live,
we ride together."

The wilderness of the land of Radio gave way to ranches and one
ranch house with a TM Bar brand placed over the door.

Inside, a group of friends gathered around the fireplace and drank from hot
mugs. There was a younger cowboy, and an old wrangler, and a man who could
have been any age. He had his hand on the shoulder of a young girl. "This
evening is a gift in itself. We are warm and dry, safe and secure in our
home. How many old pioneers would have offered prayers to be as we are."

High above the ranch, airplanes flew, carrying gifts and
medicine and supplies to those in need. At the controls of one plane, the
pilot was garbed in a uniform black as midnight. In another, the pilot wore
a cowboy hat but flew with the skill of a long time pilot.

In a third plane, there was a younger man, seemingly new to his air
adventures but with an undeniable talent for flying. All were destined to
uphold the tradition of this night.

Higher up still was a space vehicle and another pilot from
another time who was watching all this with the skill of Twenty-Fifth
Century science.

The space pilot could scan all the way to a city that seemed to
be London Town, where a miser was learning there were more things more
precious than gold, where a tall detective and a somewhat rotund doctor were
exchanging toasts to this night.

In other cities resembling San Francisco a large family gathered near Sea
Cliff, and Three Comrades went back to seafront bar where first they met.
In a mid-Western town a widow who ran a lumberyard planned a Christmas
dinner.

In cluttered offices a scattering of scribes put down the words
that told of all of these. Their names were John and Jim, and Jon and
Martin and Jim again, and they wrote of the land of Radio.

From all of these, and many more, from a beloved tightwad, from
a wooden doll that had never lived but could never die, from the neighbors
of Wistful Vista, and from so many others - MERRY CHIRSTMAS.

            -- JIM HARMON

Subject: "Golden Age of Radio" and "A One Night Stand
 with the Big Bands"

The latest "Golden Age of Radio" programs with Dick Bertel
and Ed Corcoran, and "A One Night Stand with the Big Bands"
with Arnold Dean can be heard at [removed].

Each week we feature three complete shows in MP3 format
for your listening pleasure or for downloading; two "Golden
Age of Radios" and one "One Night Stand." We present new
shows every week or so. The current three programs will be
available on line at least until the morning of December 31, 2006.

 Program 22 - January, 1972 - Bret Morrison

Ask anyone who was around during the Golden Age of Radio
what he or she remembers most, and chances are the reply
will be "The Shadow." Who can forget sitting around the radio
when the ominous strains of Saint Seans' Omphale's Spinning
Wheel" signaled the nation's favorite Sunday evening program?

Bret Morrison was the voice of The Shadow for most of 1943,
and John Archer took over near the end of 1944. Bret Morrison
returned in September, 1945, and remained the voice through
1954, when the program ended.

Program 23 - February, 1972 - The Radio Shows of 1947

Radio Shows from 1947 - A retrospective look at radio programs
from a quarter century ago. We'll hear an excerpt from a United
Press program that dramatized the top ten news stories of the year.
We'll also hear some typical shows of the time including "Our Miss
Brooks," "Sherlock Holmes," "Aunt Jenny," and "Jack Benny."

"A One Night Stand with the Big Bands" With Arnold Dean

Program 14 - November, 1972 - Andy Kirk

Andy Kirk's Twelve Clouds of Joy was the first Kansas City band,
after Benny Moten's Kansas City Orchestra, to achieve national
recognition.

The Kirk band maintained its Kansas City base and performed at
the Pla-Mor, Fairyland Park and Winwood beach, occasionally
touring the west and east coasts. Their first big national hit, "Until
the Real Thing Comes Along" featured vocalist Pha Terrell and was
recorded April 2, 1936 .

In the 1970's WTIC decided that there was a market in
the evening for long-form shows that could be packaged
and sold to sponsors. Two of those shows were "The
Golden Age of Radio" and "A One Night Stand with the
Big Bands."

Dick Bertel had interviewed radio collector-historian
Ed Corcoran several times on his radio and TV shows,
and thought a regular monthly show featuring interviews
with actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians
from radio's early days might be interesting. "The Golden
Age of Radio" was first broadcast in April, 1970; Ed was
Dick's co-host. It lasted seven years. "The Golden Age
of Radio" can also be heard Saturday nights on Walden
Hughes's program on Radio Yesteryear.

Arnold Dean began his love affair with the big band
era in his pre-teen years and his decision to study
the clarinet was inspired by the style of Artie Shaw.
When he joined WTIC in 1965 he hosted a daily program
of big band music. In 1971, encouraged by the success
of his daily program and "The Golden Age of Radio"
series, he began monthly shows featuring interviews
with the band leaders, sidemen, agents, jazz reporters,
etc. who made major contributions to one of the great
eras of music history.
