Derek sez:
what were some of Morrison's other radio triumphs and
accomplishments?
Morrison was a looming presence on WLS, the "Prairie Farmer" station in
Chicago, both before and after the Hindenburg disaster. He is mentioned in
many articles in the station's weekly: "Standby" (1935-1938) and an issue
following the crash has a cover article on him.
Morrison did not go batty after the Hindenburg crash (urban legend); he
continued to be an impostant staff member of WLS.

From Those Were The Days --
4/30
1945 - "How would you like to be queen for a day!" That opening line,
delivered by host, Jack Bailey, was first heard on Mutual on this day.
The first Queen for a Day was Mrs. Evelyn Lane.
1945 - Arthur Godfrey began his CBS morning show. His theme was Seems
Like Old Times. Arthur Godfrey Time ran until this very same day in
1972. Godfrey's show used live talent and not records. His popularity
with listeners was the major reason that several sponsors gave Godfrey
the freedom to ad-lib their commercials and, from time to time, joke
about the products as well.
5/1
1931 - Singer Kate Smith began her long and illustrious radio career
with CBS on this, her birthday. The 22-year-old Smith started out with
no sponsors and a paycheck of just $10 a week for the nationally
broadcast daily program. However, within 30 days, her salary increased
to a more respectable $1,500 a week.
5/5
1935 - The program, Rhythm at Eight, made its debut. The star of the
show was 24-year-old Ethel Merman. Though Merman would become a legend
years later, she didn't fare so well on radio. Her show was taken off
the air after 13 weeks and Miss Merman returned to her first love,
Broadway.

About a year ago, I purchased a bunch of 3/4" tapes that were from a
Dumont TV station. Among them were two Col Flack shows. If anyone is
interested in seeing what they look like, I've transferred them to a
DVD. I thought we had them in Cincinnati at our table, but it is
possible that we did not bring them.
Call or email me for particulars.

Slow, but sure I'm making a come back from my cancer surgery.
Next year the hotel will be a Double Tree (Hilton) Hotel. This may
help improve some of the problems. Robert Newman made some
research of the hotels in the Cincinnati area, and the (Best Western)
Ramada met our requirements - space needed, and cost. They made
it possible for us to continue to have conventions. It's as simple as that.
We had a few people missing this year. Was it the cost increase, or are
people losing interest in conventions?
We will have one next year. April 25, 26, 2008 are the dates. They
are not confirmed yet, but that's what we're shooting for.

I tend to think of her more as a novelist and a screenwriter than a
playwright. In fact, I never knew she wrote any plays. Can anybody name
them, and tell me which ones were done on Lux? And for that matter,
which of her films were adapted to radio, on Lux or other shows? (I
checked and it looks like her most famous novel, Gentlemen Prefer
Blondes, was not done on Lux. Might have been interesting if it had
been. I've read the book but, amazingly, never seen either of the film
versions--though I'm not sure if the silent version survives.)

Subject: WNYC Archives
There was a story in today's (Saturday's) New York Times about the archives
(audio and written) of radio station WNYC. Unfortunately the article is
only available for paying subscribers on the Times website, but there are
audio excerpts avaialble for free at
[removed]
Highlights include a 1939 inteview with Harry Houdini's brother and a 1940
performance by Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie.
Incidentially, WNYC is now moving from the building where it has had its
studios since 1924. Of course WNYC isn't the oldest radio station, but
that's got to be the longest time a radio station has been at the same
address.
[ADMINISTRIVIA: While the Times may have stuffed its article under
TimesSelect, The Villager has a publically-accessable article available at
