Subject: RE: What science fiction OTR episode is this?
I posted a question that appeared in Issue 20 of this digest looking for
a specific science fiction episode.
I described it like this, not wanting to give away the ending:
"Two astronauts visit the moon and theorize that the moon was once
inhabited but wonder how, given the surface of the moon. They comment on
the surface - the whiteness of it (almost like ash) and the craters.
Then, as they are approaching Earth on the return [removed]"
I have since found it: "Rocket From Manhattan" from the series The Devil
And Mr. O. I suspect this was originally aired in the Lights Out series
in the '50s.
I was wrong about there being two astronauts; there were three. It's a
good episode and I'm not surprised I thought it was from X Minus One.
The plot is typical of that series.

Subject: Charlie McCarthy
In response to an earlier inquiry about Charlie's whereabouts, it's my
understanding that Charlie, Mortimer, and Effie Klinker were donated to the
Museum of Broadcast Communications. Presumably when the Museum reopens they
will be back on display, as they were when the MBC was housed in Chicago's
Cultural Center.

Subject: The Green Hornet and Evolution of the Media
I have to agree with Michael and Larry here. I haven't seen the movie yet
but I would be shocked if producers stayed faithful to the radio series. The
only way that would happen is if they did a parody, which would likely make
readers of this digest even angrier since the satire would not be kind.
The media has evolved a great deal since the 1930's. We could probably argue
all day long whether or not that evolution is good or bad, but it's a
reality we have to face. When I heard the Green Hornet was going to be a
movie, I knew it would either be dark like the new Batman movies, or
comical. Sounds like it may be a little of both.
I am 35 years old and appreciate both mediums; old radio drama and modern
entertainment. Both have their pros and cons. But I would be engaging in an
exercise in self-deception if I thought the Hornet could survive as he was
originally conceived in today's media.
What would happen if Gunsmoke were revived and brought to the big or small
screen? Would Matt Dillon be the clean-cut hero of the TV series, or the
darker, more warped figure that John Meston originally envisioned? I can
almost guarantee that you'd come a lot closer to William Conrad's angry
portrayal in the early Gunsmoke radio stories than you would get to James
Arness. In the movie or modern TV series, certain things only vaguely hinted
at in the radio series would be brought front and center. Kitty would be an
open prostitute, Doc would be an alcoholic and Chester would probably be
mocked by the town as a "retard." In a modern revival, you'd probably see a
man decapitated by an axe, another man trampled to death by a wild stallion
while trying to escape, and you might even see Dillon stab a man to death
with a pitchfork while trapped in a snowbound cabin. These are all things
that happened, either implicitly or explicitly, in the radio series, but
were sugar-coated in the subsequent TV show.
In conclusion, let me say that I read somewhere that I Love a Mystery is
going to be recreated. I don't remember the details, but I am sure of one
thing. If the producers simply intend to bring in actors to read the scripts
as originally written, then dub in sound effects, the revival will never get
off the ground. The characters of Jack, Doc and Reggie will have to be more
fully developed and the stories will need to be altered to fit modern times.
This may not be to the taste of many fans of this digest, but it could make
for some darn good storytelling.

Several months ago? Heck, it was almost two years ago! Martin Grams
posted here on May 10, 2009 about it, which is the first time I had
heard about it. The web site created for the new project
([removed]) sits unchanged with no news. So I'm with
you. I also wonder what's happening with this long-gestating project.
I fear it's been delayed or perhaps even abandoned. Sure hope not,
because I'd really love to hear more of Jack, Doc and Reggie. Can
anyone give us any info? A morsel to grasp at?

Subject: Buddy Charleton, RIP
Steel guitarist "Buddy" Charleton, who had 20 years in radio and
personal appearances with Ernest Tubb, died in Spotsylvania, VA of
lung cancer on January 25th at the age of 72.
Virginia-born Charleton accompanied Patsy Cline before she won a
national audience. In the late 1950s, he was hired by Tubb to replace
Buddy Emmons, who left to join Ray Brice's backup band. Thereafter
Charleton was part of Tubb's Texas Troubadours who played up to 300
shows a year, including weekly appearances on both "Grand Ole Opry"
and "Midnight Jamboree." Retiring from the Troubadours in 1973, he
returned to Virginia where he taught steel guitar in Culpeper.
Elmer Lee Charleton, Jr. was born in New Market, VA on March 6, 1938
and was taught music by his father, a full-time brick layer and part-
time steel guitarist. He was survived by his second wife, Kay Wilson
Charleton, and three children from his first marriage to Karen
Harmon. He was inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame in 1993.

This sounds like "Rocket from Manhattan" from Arch Oboler's Plays, September
20, 1945. It's frequently passed off as a Lights Out episode (like many other
Oboler plays, as Martin Grams has pointed out often) so you might find it
filed under Lights Out.
Oboler used "Rocket" as part of his syndicated 1970s series The Devil and Mr.
O which may have led to confusion about its being a Lights Out play. Also
confusing is the fact that there happens to be a 1945 Lights Out episode
called "The Rocket Ship," but that one is by Wyllis Cooper, not Oboler, and
doesn't seem to be circulating.

As a response to George about the science fiction episode featuring the
rocketship coming back from the moon, he might want to check out LIGHTS
OUT and the episode entited "Rocket from Manhatten" also known as "The
Rocketship." Great episode.
