Subject: Iva Toguri, RIP

One of the most famous OTR broadcasters of WW II died at age 90 in
Chicago on Tuesday. Iva Toguri bore the undeserved nickname of "Tokyo
Rose" for most of her life for the alledged (but untrue) accusations
that she aired anti-American propaganda for the Japanese.

The various press releases today, including the Associate Press, do
indicate that she was eventually pardoned after her treason conviction
that kept her in the federal prison from 1949 to 1956. Subsequent
investigations have proved the innocence she claimed at the San
Francisco trial. Some witnesses against her even recanted their
testimony in her behalf.

After release from prison, she returned to her family in Chicago, IL
where she helped them run the family store. In 1977 President Gerald
Ford granted her a full pardon, based upon evidence gathered by the
Chicago Tribune.

In the 90s, some general realization of her innocence began to surface
within the general [removed] population. And in January of this year, the WW
II Veterans Committee presented her with the Edward J. Herlihy
Citizenship Award.

This gracious, patriotic lady who shared her birthday with her country,
July 4th, never uttered a discouraging word about the unfair treatment
she received here. For a full version of her history, go the the RADIO
RECALL site at <[removed]> and scroll to the June 2006 issue
for a detailed article on this American heroine.

Subject: Captain Midnight Radio Contest

Hello to all Captain Midnight fans.

Reading the recent emails about the Capt.
Midnight radio serial has stirred me to write
the following :

When the current story was being run in the
1930s, we listeners (grade school) were told
to go to our Skelly station and get a map that
would tell us where something important to
the story was located (if we could figure out
how to use the map). I couldn't make any
sense of the map, but my best friend dropped
the map, quite by accident, into a very large
bucket of lard. Lo, some writing came out
and he then was able to find information that
would allow us to find out something (I just
can't remember what, it was around 70 yrs
ago). The catch was that we had to write
and explain why we thought we had found
whatever it was. The winning prize was an
Agfa Clipper camera. Only two boys in
the state of Kansas won that camera, and
I was one of them, and they read my name
over the radio at the end of a program. I
used that camera all through my high school
years. I was so proud, but my friend, who
discovered the secret of the invisible
information on the map, was really ticked
off at me. I said I was just a better writer
than he was (but that only made him more
angry, of course). I can't help but wonder
if anyone reading this letter was a winner
of that prize, or even remembers the story
and the [removed]

Laura asks about Greenberg on Third.

There could be another reference, but most likely it's
referring to Hank Greenberg, a Hall of Fame player for
the Detroit Tigers.

Well, gee whiz--

Wouldn't that be the legendary baseball player, Hank Greenberg?

Hank played with the Detroit Tigers, and briefly with the Pittsburgh
Pirates, and will live forever, in the Hall of Fame, at Cooperstown.

(There was a terrific documentary on Greenberg, released to theatres, a
few years ago.)

Subject: Dragnet radio and TV

I remember another Dragnet script that was used in both radio and TV
(the early BW episodes). It involves a rash of thefts from stores
(shoplifting? Charge card fraud?) that are eventually tracked down to
the wife of a successful doctor or something. I'm a little hazy on the
details, but I know I've seen it and heard it. I could probably track
down the info over the weekend if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Is this the talented Peter Appleyard the vibe player of note?
If it is, greetings to you. I used to see you play at George's Spaghetti
House in Toronto in the good old jazz days of the late '50s.
If not, you have a namesake you might wanna check out. Good stuff.
But, anyway, I am curious about the missing SUSPENSE show you acquired.
May I know the title in case it's one I'm looking for.
Write me off line at above address if you would.
