Subject: RE: Hindenberg Crash

According to A. A. (Abe) Schechter, news director for NBC from 1932 to 1942,
in his book "I Live On Air", Morrison was making a recording of the
Hindenberg landing for the WLS Chicago sound effects and transcription
library. He certainly was not there to make a recording for news broadcast,
as NBC had a rule against using recordings for such broadcast, and the
landing of the Hindenberg was not particularly a news worthy event, as it had
landed in the [removed] other times before.

There were a number of other reporters there to cover the arrival of
celebrities on the Hindenberg, but as fortune would have it, Morrison was
the only one with recording equipment. This was the first time NBC relaxed
their rule in allowing the recording to be broadcast. This was also
apparently the first time that the NBC "fourth chime" was used to alert the
NBC staff of a news breaking event involving a disaster situation.

Schechter was with the crew that raced from NBC NY to Lakehurst to cover the
crash. As soon as the incident happened the Navy, which was responsibe of the
handling of the landing, commandeered all but of a few of the available
telephone lines. Because of the other reporters, Schechter, couldn't get a
line to phone NBC NY but he rememberd that when he had previously covered a
landing that there was another hanger on the field that had a coin-op phone.
He and another member of the staff jumped into his car and rushed to the
other hanger and found the phone wasn't in use. He cave the staff member a
hand full of coins and instructed him to "start phoning the office whenever
anyone tries to dislodge you, I will dig up all the coins you need".

The NBC crew had tried, upon arrival, to set up a transmitter to communicate
back to NBC but were unsuccessful. However, once they were in touch with the
NY office via phone, the engineers placed a pack transmitter close to the
wreckage where a receiver on top of a hanger picked up this signal and
relayed through another transmitter to a mobile unit about a mile away, where
it was relayed again by another transmitter to the telephone companies
station at Forked River, then on to NY via land line. NBC held both networks
(Red & Blue) open for more than two hours beyond the closing hours of 1:00 am
EDST so listners could follow the events.

Subject: ILAM Recreations

It's an interesting question as to just how faithful the ILAM "recreations"
should be. There are so many technological advances available now that
weren't then, starting with simple stereo. So how far can or should they go?
Stereo vs Mono? Orchestra vs Organ? Are the new episodes intended to
precisely recreate the early productions, or to give the best possible
production values to the Morse scripts? I lean towards the latter.

production techniques, shall we? --cfs3]
