Superman has placed them in a position where they die. He is
responsible. He could be charged with murder.
I remember that one. And I have to say, that always bothered me. It
certainly seemed to be an end-run around Superman's much-vaunted code
against killing.
The bottom line, of course, is that failure to return
to headquarters is only the first of many rules and regulations the
Lone Ranger ignored in his personal idea and ideal of justice.
Right. He worked for law and order on his own terms. He worked with
law-enforcement on his own terms. Which is why it is common to refer
to a "Lone Ranger approach" to a problem. This thread started when
Justice Ginsburg was criticized for using that expression, but she
didn't coin it. It's been around for some time, representing a way
of dealing with things by operating outside organized institutions.
Which is what the Lone Ranger did.

However, they have moved things behind a wall where only paid members
can now get the files. This was the site that Boing Boing Web site
reported sometime back as having hundreds of shows for download.
Hate to say it, but whenever Boing Boing reports something, be prepared
for it to change. Many of these sites remain treasured until *everyone*
finds out about it. I've seen sites suddenly shut down because they
cannot handle the traffic.
BTW, this is a good time to put in a plug for my links listing at my own
web site: [removed];uid=default
The site was previously listed (though I have since changed it) as well
as one someone pointed out in this same digest about the Marr Archives.
I've had that site listed for over a year.

The young Stuart Lubin ( 6 years younger than me) has pretty good memory
"The Chicago Theater of the Air" is the correct name of the program
.(1940-1955). Betty Lou Gerson is listed as a cast member.
My mother got tickets and we enjoyed and operetta and I don't remember the
name. The program was broadcast from the Chicago Tribune Tower's (WGN)
Studio on Saturday nights for an [removed] It broadcast on the Mutual Network.
WGN is 50,000 watt station and was clear channel.
The Operattas were very different from theatrical performances. The
speaking parts were done buy radio actors and sing parts were done by well
known singers. when you heard the program on radio you couldn't really tell
the difference.
The worse part of the program was an intermission talk by the Chicago
Tribune Publisher, Colonel McCormick on history or patriotism, that seemed
to last for ever .

Subject: Radio Stars' Voices in the Movies
I dropped in on a friend who happened to be watching _The Good, the
Bad and the Ugly_. There is a scene in which Eli Wallach takes a
battered, sickened Clint Eastwood to an adobe monastery, apparently,
serving as a makeshift Confederate hospital. The priest who welcomes
them and offers them his room sounded very familiar, and I was
reminded that I'd thought the same thing when I'd first seen the
movie. I'm sure I've heard that voice on radio. I associate it with
the host of Inner Sanctum, the one who followed Raymond. I also
thought one of the other priests sounded very much like Everett
Sloane. Couldn't have been, since Mr. Sloane had died the year before
this movie was made, but I still believe it was a radio voice.
Unfortunately I'm told the dubbers were not credited. Does anyone
happen to know the identity of the Sanctum-host like voice of the
priest? Did a lot of radio actors go into dubbing as radio drama
faded away? Thanks.

Subject: loud world
I thought the audiologist's remark, "men can't multi-task" was a pretty
creative way to describe the difference in the way aging male and female
ears and brains work. But let's not totally blame our inability to hear what
we want to hear and filter out the junk on our aging ears. Fact is, TV and
radio stations and music production facilities do use devices that
automatically boost up softer. background sounds to ear splitting levels.
What used to be "dynamic range," the difference between the softest and
loudest sounds, now has three levels: loud, louder and loudest. Listen to
the play-by play of a sporting event and when the announcer takes a breath
you'll hear the crowd noise jump up and then sharply drop down with the guy's
first syllable. That effect is called "pumping," which is just what it
sounds like and it's done for the specific purpose of sounding louder than
the next station so it will grab you as you turn the tuning dial. I worked
at a station whose engineer, after cranking all the auto-level devices up
full tilt, boasted that his station now screams.

Subject: Light Western show?
On Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at 01:02 AM, Ted wrote:
Our re-creation group has been asked to put on a show featuring a "light",
almost comedic western program. It's an adult audience, so we don't want a

want an adult western such as Gunsmoke or Have Gun, Will Travel.
Anyone have any ideas on that type of western show?
OK, Ted, you've got us scratching our heads. You want a script from a
Western show but you insist that it can't be a kids show nor an adult
show.
What did you have in mind? A teen-aged western? ("Archie Andrews at a
Dude Ranch") A musical western? ("Andrew Sisters Eight to the Bar
Ranch") A comedy show that went west? ("Buck Benny Rides Again")

A Radio Spirits collection of Duffy's Tavern episodes begins with the
audition show. At the end, listeners are encouraged to contact the network if
they would like to hear more. How were audition shows handled in general?
Were some pitched to potential sponsors and others offered directly to the
public?

Subject: Your Truly Johnny Dollar - Suspense mystery
The more I think, the more confused I get.
I received two responses from folks concerning the YTJD program which
did not air on Oct 23, 1956. Both suggested a political show.
I know there are no absolutes when it comes to broadcast dates [removed]
I drove the 100 miles today (round trip) to the Louisville Public
Library to look at the newspapers from that week and sure enough
Johnny Dollar normally aired on WHAS Radio at 8:15 - 8:30 on week
nights. There it is listed at 8:15 on Monday 22nd. Tuesday the 23rd
Suspense aired at 7:30 PM, followed at 8 pm by a half hour program
simply listed as "Stevenson" so that would have been the 1/2 hour paid
political program. So I looked at the following night (Wednesday 24th)
and again no Johnny Dollar instead it was a UN Program in his time
slot, with Johnny Dollar returning on Thursday 25th. So either folks
in the Louisville area missed an episode or WHAS was running Johnny
Dollar on a delayed basis.
Realizing Suspense ran before the Stevenson political program I looked
at a OTR dealer for the name of the episode that ran on Tuesday ,
October 23rd. But according to the Otter log and a couple of OTR
dealers Suspense ran on the 18th The Long Night, and the 25th The
Man Who Stole the Bible. I do not have either Suspense show in my
collection, and since WHAS ran the show on a different night, there
probably would not be a network announcement following the Suspense
broadcast for the Stevenson show.
That was my plan.
So all I can suggest is listen to whatever the show that aired before
the Stevenson broadcast on the CBS network and see if they announce it
as "coming up next." Based on the difference in the Louisville listing and
the dealers logs. I can't confirm the Stevenson show was even on the
network, in place of Johnny Dollar, it may have been a local or
regional production.
I am sure the newspaper listing is correct because the Courier Journal
newspaper
was owned by the same folks as WHAS Radio.
