One of my favourite Sherlock Holmes archivists, Ken Greenwald had a nice
posting here about the indefatigable Charles Osgood. I'd like to add a
little-known credit to Ken's "Osgood file." Charles Osgood wrote the patriotic
music that accompanied the 1960s Top-40 spoken word recording "Gallant Man" by
Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen (R-IL). This tune can be heard in the film
"Easy Rider" being played by a marching band. As Minority Leader in the [removed]
Senate, the improbable recording star Dirksen had a regular radio show with
the minority leader in the House, Charlie Halleck, informally referred to as
the "Ev and Charlie Show," which eventually became the "Ev and Jerry Show"
when Congressman Gerald R. Ford replaced Halleck as House Minority Leader.

"That's about the size of it."

Subject: RE: Irene Tedrow, et. al.

Irene Tedrow, and many of the other OTR greats, including Jan Merlin, Parley
Baer, Ted DeCorsia, Will Wright, and so on, appeared during the earlier years
on that other medium, especially in the old Perry Mason series, where they
played many murderers and red herrings. Sadly, they were restricted to
playing the parts of characters that the producers thought their physical
appearances merited. Of course, that was never a consideration on radio,
because, as I've learned from several years of reading this list, the
pictures were better.

Subject: CORRECTION TO 4/3rd births/deaths

The "credit" for Don Gibson on Ronald Sayles
<bogusotr@[removed]; APR/3rd birthdays
is completely wrong:

04-03-1928 - Don Gibson - Shelby, NC - d. 11-17-2003
actor: "New World A' Coming"

Don Gibson was a SONG WRITER(composer)/SINGER . . .
Not an actor - and what does "NEW WORLD A' COMING"
refer to ? ? ?

Don composed "SWEET DREAMS" ~ "OH, LONESOME ME
~ "I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU", which has been recorded
700 times by different artists, Ray Charles took
it to the top of the POP hit parade in 1962 and the
song was awarded THE BEST R & B RECORDING in that year . . . . .

Not an actor but the best damn singer & song writer ! ! !

Subject: Benny's quiz show

Lately I've been reading the Digest posting about the Jack Benny in the Groucho
sketch on U-Tube. I would like to see it, but unfortunately I live in an isolated
area where high speed internet is not available.
The discussion did jog my memory a little; I remember (long time ago) watching a
$64,000 Question quiz show in which Jack was a contestant. Jack's category was
music or violin or something like that there and he answered the first question
correctly. The quiz master explained that if he answered the next question
correctly he would win $128. Jack was amazed and ecstatic until it was explained
that if he gave the wrong answer he would lose his $64. After some deep thought
Jack said that he would quit and keep his winnings. The emcee said that since Jack
was a big star that he might want to donate the money. Without missing a beat Jack
said to send the money to his favorite charity 'Better Education for our Nation's
Needy Youth'....just mail the check to 'B E N N Y Hollywood California'.
Just thought I would share a random memory.
