Subject: Kiddie Show Question

This took me back aways. I recalled the show and
thought the name was the Green Lantern. Then, I read
Bryan's response about "The Land of the Lost" and
looked it up in Dunning. The fish character was the
Red Lantern, the kids Isabel and Billy, and the
kingdom at the bottom of the sea, where all lost
things find their way, was bathed in a shimmering
green light.

Manning Huston narrated the undersea adventure with
Betty Jean Taylor and Ray Ives playing the children.
It aired on ABC from 10/9/43 thru 9/22/45

Subject: Don Pardo

Don Pardo was a guest on a radio show I listened to
(and taped) on WNYC-AM. He said he remembered working
as an announcer for Eddie Cantor in the 1940's and he
couldn't recall the name of the sponsor when it came
time to announce, so he tried to remember the product
by its attributes and it came out "Marshmallars"...

Gen Wood was indeed a host on such unforgotten shows
as "Anything You Can Do' (women vs. men) and the
remake of Beat the Clock and Truth or Conequences (if
I recall correctly) and then he was the announcer for
Family Feud with Richard Dawson (who by then lost his
English accent).

In a recent posting, Ken Dahl talks about a Benny Pgm. where "Rochester"
owns a race horse named "Burnt Cork". Ken goes on to say that in real life,
Eddie "Rochester" Anderson did own a horse by that name.

Did the significance of the horses name escape attention. Corks, from wine
bottles, when burnt and charred on the end, were used as makeup to make
"Black-faces" for Minstrel shows.

We are SO sorry that the offer concerning "Temple of Vampires" was incorrect
and would like to unequivically state that Ted Davenport had nothing to do
with it. We are private contractors for Ted and were led to believe that the
episodes available were genuine. Even at that, we sold only two sets before
beginning to have our doubts, and telling all other callers that we would
e-mail them after we had made further checks of the authenticity

It is an incident that should not have happened, and rest assured that the two
individuals involved are getting their money back. As to Ted, he has made it
clear to us that we are not to act in his name without further authorization
than was the case [removed] that will definately be done.

Again, with our apologies.

Hello to all out there in radio land,

I am interested in a radio show, "Chicago Theater of the Air." I am
especially interested in finding one of the shows titled, "Natoma" by Victor
Herbert.
It is an Indian opera about an Indian princess. Does anyone know the date of
the show? Does anyone have a tape of the show. Any help would be deeply
appreciated.

I thought I put my two cents in.

1. I dont use labels. I've noticed that some of the CD-R brands I bought
several years ago that came with labels pressed on the top of the CDs no
longer continue practice. Memorex is example unles I am mistaken.
2. I stores my original Data CDs in a jewel case with a jacket insert as my
only "label"
3. When I am not listening to it in my DVD player, its in the case make
direct labels on CD unnecessary.
4. Nero has a program that will tell when (ie, Month and Year) the
particular CD in question was created (Originally Burned).
5. Some of my older CDs when I first started collecting in MP3 date from
around the early part of 2001. Therefore, I am now burning a fresh copy of
these with brand new HQ Blanks CD-Rs. Therefore, I burn a new copy of the
original every 3-5 years since I've read of some CD failures. This may be a
redundant precaution for some, but I feel given the low price of Quality
CD-Rs its all small price to pay for increased security. I also burn my
long-term originals at 8x. although I could burn higher since I can afford
to wait an extra minute or two for something that I expect to get several
years use out of.

 dan hughes links o a photo, and asks;

Who is this with Bob Hastings?

Another autograph acquisition; this time a signed photo of Bob Hastings
(a YOUNG Bob Hastings), posing with a woman. Anybody know who she is?
Thanks!

I looked at the photo, and I'll darned if I can identify her. But one thing
is certain. She is a lot prettier than Hastings. But it does appear that
they have the same hairdresser.

Hi All,

I have been listening to a lot of OTR and one
reference that has come up and has been on my mind and
have been curious to know is the [removed]

What does [removed] mean? I know that it has something
to do with automobiles, but for the life of me, I
don't know what the acronym stands for. I have heard
it in commercials, as well as in some jokes and would
like to get more info.

Many thanx,

Subject: Brown Betty's and OTR

Well, Dennis is leading us a long way from OTR, but since he's such a
great guy, we'll answer his question.

I really don't think that Brown Betty's and OTR are far-distanced. I
remember my Mother baking Brown Betty's often for our after-dinner dessert,
especially in Winter, since there was no air conditioning then. On those
evenings, we would enjoy our "Betty's" while listening to those great
Fibber (and other) shows. Oh, the many memories this list brings back. I
don't think I've had a Brown Betty for many, many years. Look out, my
kitchen - you're in for a treat (I can smell it now). And, when I get it
done, I'm going to put on a Fibber show and pretend it is 60 years ago. (I
think I'll light my oil lamp, too.)

Subject: Gildersleeve as singer

It was not uncommon to have him sing. Today I was listening to a show with
the barbershop group, jolly boys sp?. Does anyone know if the actors or
singers hired for
the occasion actually sang? If an actor sang as part of a show did they
come under some other union for that time and/or did they get additional
money for doing so?

Subject: Radio Memories and CDs

Hello all. Well, I am not really surprised about the false alarm regarding
ILAM. I don't blame Scott at all, I would be excited if there was a chance
of any new episodes surfacing also. However, this brings up a good point
which I had thought about posting to the digest but was waiting to see how
things played out. Since Scott already mentioned it though I will elaborate.

I placed a very large order for CDs from a special in February. Sure, I
got all the CDs, and I even got bonuses. However, about 80% of them have
sound issues. Some have only minor problems which I can fix myself, such
as being off pitch or a slight hum. However, many are badly clipped,
meaning that there is distortion because when they were transfered from
their analog source the volume was too loud. Some portions are inaudible,
not to mention the loud hum. Sometimes I can hear static as part of the
music. If this was one or two shows, or even one series, I would dismiss
it, but this has happened with several CDs from different series. Note
that I am not complaining about disc noise since that is to be expected. I
am also not complaining about tape hiss since that is somewhat
reasonable. I am complaining because just a quick listen would point out
these problems, and most of the CDs need to be redone.

Two final notes about this. One, I am not blaming Ted at all. I bought
cassettes from him and they were in excellent quality. I was very
impressed and I would recommend him for cassettes in the future. The
problem is that he had someone else do his CD service, and they were, in
most cases, using a commercial CD recorder as opposed to a computer with a
burner. If you ever try a CD recorder, please keep in mind the hum problem
introduced. I know of no easy way to remove the hum once it is
introduced. Other CDs did seem to be done with a computer and burner and
did not have the problem.

Second, I reported this to the CD producer shortly after it happened. He
contacted me about it and I took my time getting back to him since I wanted
to go through all of them to determine what needed replacing, but when I
sent him email about making arrangements for such replacements he did not
answer. However, he did make it clear that he would replace all of them at
no charge, so again I'll see how all of this plays out.
