Subject: June issue: RADIO RECALL
The June 2010 issue of RADIO RECALL in PDF format and full color has
been emailed to cyber-space subscribers, with the black & white, hard
copy version scheduled to be sent via USPO to the rest of our
subscribers within two weeks. This issue leads off with Maury Cagle's
lengthy article on the history of "Lights Out," the scary anthology
network series.
Next, Ryan Ellett has a well-researched piece entitled "Uncovering
Black Radio's Roots, 1927-29" which will engross readers. A famous
OTR singer, now largely forgotten, Lucy Monroe, is remembered by Cort
Vitty in his article, "The Star Spangled Soprano." Our historical
theme continues with Rob Farr's article on the 1916 presidential
election, the incorrect results of which were broadcast around the
world by three powerful Navy radio towers in Arlington, VA.
Our gal-reporter, Melanie Aultman, recounts all the details that
transpired at the 2010 Cincinnati Convention in her breezy, yet
factual, style. Adam Roslewicz, our resident puzzle master,
contributes another head-scratcher in "OTR Unscrambler." Finally, the
editor muses on what went right (or wrong) with the 1930s show,
"Sunbrite Junior Nurse Corps," in its attempt to draw little girls to
their radio sets, a feat that not even Little Orphan Annie could
accomplish.
All this, plus information on upcoming OTR conventions and events,
along with Letters to the Editor.

Subject: Joyce Jordan & The Brighter Day
Joe Mackey tells us that "Joyce Jordan, Girl Intern" began in 1938 on
CBS and "later evolved into 'The Brighter Day' in 1948."
Close, but no cigar.
As Jim Cox pointed out in his 1999 book, "The Great Radio Soap
Operas," Joyce Jordan did begin on CBS in 1938 but in the 40s, she
was "Joyce Jordan, MD" on NBC, presumably having served her five
years of internship. Jordan for three years was a surgeon at mythical
Hotchkiss Memorial Hospital in an equally mythical town of Preston.
By 1948, Jordan was relegated to hostess status on her series, merely
narrating stories of her patients.
One of those patients, Elizabeth Dennis, widow of Rev. Richard
Dennis, lived in nearby Three Rivers. Jordan visited this family
several times before her series ended on October 8, 1948. "The
Brighter Day" debuted on October 11, 1948 and the sponsor (P & G, of
course) moved Joyce's announcer, Ron Rawson, to "The Brighter Day"
which took Joyce's time slot. As Jim surmised correctly, "The
transition could hardly have been smoother, creating a virtually
captive audience."
Moreover, Joyce was not gone forever. There were two later attempts
to reprise (or resuscitate) "Joyce Jordan, MD." ABC did so in
1951-52, as did NBC in 1954-55. Neither attempt was successful, Jim
reports, and each of these later series lasted less than six months
each.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Hi all. I need the opinions of the experts. What would people say are the
best episodes of the Great Gildersleeve? I mean the episodes that are the
funniest, saddest and most touching. I've already decided that the premier
episode, the hick-ups, the golf tournament, the failed marriage to Leila, the
jolly boys band and the lost mayoral election are among the best.
More recommendations are much appreciated. Also wondering what the name of the
Christmas episode is in which Gildy tells a story about why the chimes rang.
It has something to do with little brother.
