Subject: A dramatic turn of events

Favoring drama strongly, and strong dramas in particular, I was pleased to
discover that CBS Television has programmed what appears thus far to be five
leading dramatic contenders at the 10 o'clock hour (Eastern Time). These
ongoing capers, Monday through Friday, include Hawaii Five-O, The Good Wife,
The Defenders, The Mentalist, and Blue Bloods. As I thought about those
shows, something Irna Phillips, radio's drama mama, established came back to
me. Somewhere along the way, most likely before The Guiding Light debuted
in early 1937, it dawned on her that tales involving ongoing characters
whose lives were meted out in gradual doses were far more interesting when
they centered on the professions (law, medicine, education, criminology,
religion, etc.) as opposed to, for instance, mechanics, salesclerks,
secretaries, and other blue-collar jobs. I'm sure she meant no offense
toward those who performed honorable work in those posts: she simply came
to the conclusion that the day-to-day or week-to-week interaction required
in serialized yarns is more compelling when professionals are the subjects.
Hence, CBS-TV has thrown three cops series and two law features at 10 [removed]
in the new season. I'm thinking some of Irna's discoveries are still in
vogue.

For all those microfilm newspaper junkies out there in the ether like myself
(and you know who you are!), I serendipitously came across an article during
one
of my recent library sojournings. It's the October 7th, 1979, issue of
the
Sunday newspaper supplement magazine PARADE with its cover story about
our kind
of radio making a "comeback" (my quotation marks).Though
of-the-OTR-era shows
were mentioned, the thrust of this article concerned
retr-OTR such as "The CBS
Radfio Mystery Theatre" and "Sears Theatre." Here
in New Jersey, PARADE was and
continues to be carried in both "The
Star-Ledger" (Newark NJ) and "The Record"
(Hackensack NJ). Happy hunting!

someone who can do a write-up focusing on the radio program (not the other

If so, contact me off the digest and I'll forward you the guy's e-mail

In a message dated 9/30/2010 11:18:24 [removed] Central Daylight Time,
[removed]@[removed] writes:

Art Gilmore passed away on the 25th at 98.

I am very saddened to hear this. I remember buying "Amos 'n' Andy"
episodes from Radiola records, from the show's CBS run, and Gilmore opened
each
show. ("That's right, Rinso, the new Rinso with solium, brings you the Amos
'n' Andy Show.") Then I was surprised about this same time (1979) to hear
about a new show on radio called "Sears Radio Theatre," and delightfully
surprised to hear the same Art Gilmore introducing that show as well. Only
recently did I get to watch episodes of arguably his most famous TV work, as
the narrator of "Highway Patrol." The age of DVD and DVD extra features
also brought me a few golden age movie trailers that sounds like he narrated
those, too.

Subject: Re: Looking for Fire Bug or Arson topic shows

Marty sez: I'm looking to put together a set or collect as many shows
as possible about the theme of fire bugs or arson.

Here's a somewhat obscure one - CRIME DOES NOT PAY "Gasoline Cocktail"
starring Bela Lugosi. It can be downloaded from [removed]

You can also find DICK TRACY 38-03-07 "Case of the Firebug Murders" in
the OTRR library.

For Johnny Dollar shows, I suggest you try the Goldindex database and
search on the word " arson" (with a space first to eliminate names
like Pearson) for many episodes on the subject. I imagine this would
work for any crime series or even westerns, if you just want to see
what pops up. One in Suspense, one in Broadway's My Beat, none in the
Whistler. Now it's your turn!

Subject: Marsha Hunt

"The Way We Wore: Styles of the 1930s and '40s and Our World Since Then" is a
VERY thick coffee table book written by actress Marsha Hunt. At the Mid
Atlantic Nostalgia Convention this weekend, she was signing copies of her
hardcover book. It retails fifty bucks and worth every penny. Books like this
are high quality (the paper will probably never yellow with age) and filled
with hundreds of glossy photographs. The big surprise is that she covers her
entire career not just on the screen, but the USO and radio as well. The
chapter about her radio work as Blanche Bickerson playing opposite Don Ameche
was a pleasant surprise and her comments in the book were certainly welcome.
If you are looking for a great book to buy and spend hours reading, this is
for you. Recommended.

Also acquired this week a book titled "Pennsylvania Crude" by our own Paul
Adomites. Pennsylvania Anthracite has been of interest to me personally since
I discovered the Glen Alden/Blue Coal archives and this book is also loaded
with tons of glossy photos. Paul did a great job and as i have no doubt he'll
be reading this, good job Paul!

Nice to know books of our past are still being published.
