From Those Were The Days --
5/26
1940 - "Invitation to Learning" was first heard on CBS radio. The
educational radio program ran for 15 years on the network.
5/28
1931 - WOR radio in New York City premiered "The Witch's Tale". The
program was broadcast on the Mutual Broadcasting System (of which WOR
was the flagship station) where it aired until 1938.
5/29
1939 - "When a Girl Marries" was first heard on CBS. The serial
continued for eighteen years.
1943 - "The Million Dollar Band" was heard for the first time on NBC
radio. Charlie Spivak was the first leader of the band that featured
Barry Wood as vocalist. The unusual feature of the show was the awarding
each week of five diamond rings!
5/30
1922 -"Smilin" Ed McConnell debuted on radio, smiling and playing his
banjo. McConnell quickly became a legend in the medium.
1935 - "America's Town Meeting" was heard on radio for the first time.
The NBC program continued for 21 years, with a name change to "America's
Town Meeting of the Air".
1938 - "Joyce Jordan, Girl Intern" was first heard interning on CBS
radio. The show became Joyce Jordan, MD, on NBC in the '40s and later
morphed into "The Brighter Day" (1948).
5/31
1943 - A comic strip came to radio as "The Adventures of Archie
Andrews". It was heard on the NBC Blue network. Archie, Veronica and the
gang stayed on radio for about ten years, moving to Mutual Broadcasting
in January 1944, and then to NBC in June 1945. The radio sitcom was
based on Bob Montana's comic strip about Archie Andrews and his teen-age
pals.
1949 - A crowd of 35,000 people paid tribute to radio personality Mary
Margaret McBride at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, (one of the five
boroughs that make up New York City). McBride was celebrating her 15th
year in radio.
6/1
1936 The Lux Radio Theater moved from New York City to Hollywood.
Cecil B. DeMille, the program's host on the NBC Blue network, introduced
Clark Gable and Marlene Dietrich in The Legionnaire and the Lady.
1938 - The first issue of "Action Comics" was published. In its pages
was the world's first super hero, Superman. Jerry Siegel had a dream
about the baby, Moses, who was abandoned by his parents in order that
his life be saved. This dream prompted Siegel's creation of the "Man of
Steel". Artist Joe Shuster made the comic book hero come alive. The
first story, in this first issue, took place on the planet, Krypton,
where baby Kal-El was born. The infant was shot to Earth in a rocket
just before Krypton exploded.

Folks;
Another reminder about the first annual Cincinnati Nostalgia Expo
happening next weekend at the Crown Plaza Cincinnati Blue Ash Hotel. Bob
Hastings and Ivan Cury are the special guests, there'll be a bunch of
performances, some panels, and more. Radio Once More will be broadcasting
live from the convention at [removed] so if you can't make it
be sure to listen in, there'll be an awesome dealers room where my family
always over-spends, and you'll run into bunches of other folks from this
Digest there.
My daughter Katherine (Katie to her many many friends), fresh from her
15th birthday, will be interviewing Messrs. Cury and Hastings in panel, and
she's graciously allowing me to assist and bask in her reflected glow. ;) As
Mike noted, check out [removed] for details, and post here if
you're planning on attending! While you're there, come find us and say hello,
or tell Kate how well she's carrying the old man on the radio show!
The interviews will be recorded and broadcast in the coming months on
SummersTime, the Radio Once More weekly show Kate and I are lucky enough to
present. Watch [removed] for the schedule (although
I'll probably post here when they're airing since there's going to be serious
interest in these interviews), and listen to our archived shows at
[removed] - subscribe to the podcast feed and you'll get the
shows automatically delivered to your computer or MP3 player as they are
released!
And as mentioned earlier, our SummersTime announcer and good friend
Michael C. Gwynne, no stranger to this Digest himself, has been busy
recording audiobooks of exciting pulp fiction for Radio Archives. Their
website, [removed] has a large
catalog of audiobooks; look for those read by Michael and listen to audio
samples right on the web page. The books are available for purchase on CD, or
as digital downloads (at reduced prices!).
Lastly, a while ago I gathered together a bunch of OTR News programs into
a big ZIP file and posted them to a service called Minus, which was at that
time a pretty awesome place to store and distribute large files.
Unfortunately, the service has _dramatically_ changed focus, and about all
one can post there anymore are photographs. I've found what I think to be a
pretty solid replacement, Copy, and re-posted the news programs originally
posted to Minus there. I also posted a folder of the shows individually, so
instead of needing to pull the entire ZIP you can pick-and-choose which files
you'd like.
The entire ZIP file (all 612,534,846 bytes of it) can be retrieved at:

The folder of individual files can be browsed at:

Remember these are the same files I posted to Minus quite a while ago, so
if you already got 'em, you don't need to download them again (unless like me
you misplace things a lot). If you didn't get them, though, it's a great way
for historical news junkies to get their fix for quite a while! I would be
particularly interested to hear from visually-impaired subscribers, to find
out how well Copy works with screen readers.
Copy is a bit like Dropbox, so it has a backup/sync folder; but it's
really easy to share files or folders with anyone anytime. Owned by Barracuda
Networks, they are currently giving away 15GB (that fifteen gigabytes) of
"cloud" (offsite) storage for backups and sharing in an effort to get some
buzz [removed] if you sign up through this referral link:
[removed]
...you'll get an extra 5GB of storage for a total of 20GB, and we get 5GB
added to our account, too, so I can put together and share more file
collections. So if you think you can use some extra backup space (and want to
help out the Digest at the same time!), use that link to get an account! When
we're back from the Cincy Expo, I'll post about putting together a second
collection of news files.
I think that's everything, although at my age one never [removed]
