For those who are fans of Fred Foy, there is an interview with him at

Subject: Radio Stars' Voices in the Movies
John Mayer writes about those familiar voices in the movies that we have
often heard of radio. There is much of that because I am sure that when
directors needed a voice without the face, they would choose an actor who
was used to use the voice only, being comfortable with a microphone, and not
expecting credits and movie star pay. When I address such a subject, the
first person who comes to mind is announcer Art Gilmore. I would venture an
uneducated guess that Mr. Gilmore did at least three times as many movie
voice-overs, especially in the area of movie trailers, than any other
performer. I am happy to say, for those of you who do not know, that Mr.
Gilmore, who prefers to be called Art, is in his middle 90's and enjoying
life in great health with his wife, in Orange County, California. (Clean
living, I am sure!)
Now, after that digression! the "dubbing" that John Mayer refers to was
probably done by actor Paul McGrath, if indeed it was the voice who became
host after Raymond, on Inner Sanctum. Raymond was played by Raymond Edward
Johnson. I don't know why he was replaced. Many men were replaced in those
days by need for military service in WW 2. Raymond never had the laugh,
although he sounded scary enough. Paul McGrath initiated the laugh. Both
actors were very busy in NY radio, both in daytime and primetime.

Subject: Trouble hearing
Mr. Martin mentions that audio levels are boosted up
and then things are LOUD! Some of it borders on
distortion and the cable stations and TV networks
claim they do not increase the level of commercials.
I read in the New Yorker a few months back about Muzak
(still in business) which has literally hundreds of
different packages for each store or type of store.
What they do is to "level" out the entire audio level
and then boost (or normalize) the entire thing to make
it even and also to ensure that the volume or audio
level does not fall below a certain level or decibel,
kindof like Nickelodeon does with TV Land where they
compress the video in order to add more commercials.
Basically, the program is (subliminally) speeded-up
and slowed down and the only way you can tell is when
the opening or closing credits or music bridges are
heard. Most radio and TV shows allowed for an average
of 5-6 minutes of commercials and nowadays the
average/standard is more like 8 per half hour. There
is also a phenomenon called the Fletcher-Munson effect
that can accomplish the same thing as boosting the
audio level without blowing out your hearing. It
consists of boosting up the treble and bass in equal
amounts. The audio is "accentuated" and the human ear
appears to hear it more clearly, but it accomplishes
the same thing as simply pumping up the volume. I
wouldn't have worried if the comment about
mulit-tasking came from the audiologist. He seemed
knowledgeable. It was the ent, with a masters degree
MD who said it, and so I was very disappointed. Most
audiologists would not make a comment like that.

Paul,
I looked at the Historical New York Times database and it also listed
an episode of Johnny Dollar airing on October 23, 1956. I then went
back to Jerry Haendiges site and I saw that there are only 9 episodes
of " THE PHANTOM CHASE MATTER" listed. Shouldn't there be 10?
I guess this story went on for 2 weeks.
Also at the end of that years run, Mr. Haendiges has this on his site:
Total Number of Titles: 280
Total Number of Programs: 280
Total Possible Episodes: 280 Missing Programs: 5
Total Programs in Collection: 275
Could October 23rd possibly be one of the 5 missing episodes?

Subject: Yours Truly Johnny Dollar mystery solved
I received emails form several folks mentioning the New York Times radio
listings from Oct. 23, 1956. If you look at the regular listings it is a
little confusing as the error in the Johnny Dollar show is because the
program is
listed at 9:15 [removed] However the radio highlights list at the top of the
listings show a 30 minute Adlai Stevenson address from Madison Square Garden
being aired by both WOR and WCBS. This matches the Louisville newspaper. So
apparently the New York newspaper just kept the regular listings making the
Adlai Stevenson show look shorter. So apparently the CBS network ran the 30
minute Stevenson political address.
Thanks to all for the feedback.

Subject: Latitude Zero
I have not heard the aparently sole surviving episode of LATITUDE ZERO,
discussed in Digest 182-183. But those messages and the intriguing plot as
described by Dunning sent me to the Library of Congress in hopes that scripts
might have survived in the microfilmed NBC Master Books or at least some
minimal description in the NBC card files.
Alas, it does not look very promising.
>From the card files, which often contain an episode-by-episode rundown of a
series, including plot and cast details, comes this minimalist description:
___________________
Red network - from Hollywood
Saturday 8:00-8:30 [removed]
Starting date June 7, 1941
Closing date Sept 27, 1941
An adventure serial by Ted Sherdeman. The story begins with three men,
friends, finding a submarine drifting in the Bering Sea, abandoned by all of
its crew. The owner prevails upon the three men to become his crew and join
him in his ambition - the preservation of beauty and culture at "Latitude
Zero," a tiny island in the South Pacific Ocean. He works constantly to
borrow or steal great art objects, manuscripts and inventions, in order to
preserve or further develop them. This situation leads the men to all corners
of the earth into very imaginable situations.
The cast includes:
Lou Merrill as Craig McKenzie
Edwin Max as Simba
Elliott Lewis as Brock
Wally Maher as Burt
James Eagles as Tibbs
Elaine Barrie as Lucrezia
Sept 6, 1941 Time change: Red - Saturday - 10:30-11:00 [removed]
___________________
Dunning says the show first aired on February 11 as a West Coast show. It was
apparently picked up by the network four months later, when it switched to
Saturday. (I wonder if an attempt was made to bring the newly expanded
audience up to speed with plot and characters already well underway.)
The next stop in my research was the Red Network (WEAF) Master Books for
1941. Unfortunately, the Master Books have very sparse information about
shows originating elsewhere. I only sampled the first few network broadcasts,
but the one-page entries did not really contribute anything useful (no
episode title, no plot synopsis, no script).
The Library of Congress does not have the Hollywood script books before 1943.

Subject: Adult westerns
On Friday, July 14, 2006, at 06:18 AM, ddunfee@[removed] wrote:
"Matt Laraby", (first name and spelling could be off) was a western and
was not a show directed toward children. It did not involve the
psychological depth of character development of gunsmoke, if that is meant
as "adult" but was clearly intended for an adult audience. Can anyone tell
us more about the show and how it relates to the "adult" label put on
Gunsmoke?
This issue was dealt with very well by J. Fred MacDonald in his 1979
excellent book, "Don't Touch That Dial." He defined an adult western
radio series as one which portrayed realistic, mature stories within a
western context. While he acknowledged that "Gunsmoke" was probably the
first western to best fit that description, there were several westerns
that originated before "Gunsmoke" which were certainly not juvenile
shows. In that vein he lists: "Hawk Larabee", "Death Valley Days",
"Hashknife Hartley" and "Zane Grey Theater."
Of course, some champions of kids' westerns argue that from the
demographics of the listening audience, a claim can be made for "The
Lone Ranger", "Bobby Benson" and others to be ranked as adult shows
since one-third of their audience was older folks.
As for me, I like to say (with a twinkle in my eye) that you can
quickly determine which westerns are kids shows by applying the
following test. If more than one characteristic applies, it's a kids
show.
1)The villains have exotic names, [removed] The Yellow Snake, Texas Terror,
etc.
2) The sponsor sells cereal, candy or gum.
3) The hero's horse has a name. (Exception: The Six-Shooter)
4) The hero is often rescued by his horse, his dog, etc.
5) The hero has a comedic sidekick. (Yeah, I know, Chester could be
funny, [removed])
