Here's the message I sent to Harry Bartell's daughter upon receiving the
following message.
It is with sadness and respect that we inform you that our father, Harry,
played his last scene and passed away yesterday afternoon, February 26,
2004.
Judie and Will Bartell
Hello Judie:
We met briefly when you attended a recent Seattle OTR Convention with your
dad.
Please accept my sincere condolences.
Being an East Coast actor, I never had the pleasure of knowing, much less
working with your father. I first "met" him via the internet a year or so
ago, in Lois Culver's OTR chat room. I eventually had the great pleasure of
finally meeting him in person, as well as finally "working" with him in
Seattle during some of the recreations.
I found him to be most personable, extremely talented, [removed] "real". That's
high praise indeed in the crazy business we were in.
There is no doubt that the many OTR fans that Harry amassed over his amazing
career will feel a real sense of loss at his passing.
I can only wish that he was mercifully free of pain. And from what your dad
told me, he was devastated by the loss of your Mother not too long ago, and
now, they are reunited, which I'm certain finally eases his sorrow.
Love to you and yours

Subject: interview of LA based OTR actor
The passing of Harry Bartell's whom I had the pleasure of interviewing
for WORDS AT WAR inspires me to recommend that another fascinating actor
who is on in years, but still around should be interviewed.
If there's anyone in Los Angeles who
a. might be interested in interviewing an old-time radio actor who also
did some interesting film work (including having worked in a real film
classic), and
b. has some good experience in doing such interviews, please contact me.
I, myself, do not need the interview. But I believe that it could be of
great interest to a number of people.

Subject: Jim Aubrey
The postings about Jim Aubrey are in error. I was a CBS engineer from
1944 until I retired in 1981, working both in New York and Hollywood,
radio and television. Although I did not recall our paths crossing at
KNX, we were both there at the same time. As to him cancelling the major
shows, actually the new medium, television, was responsible. Agencies
made the switch. Jim's firing had nothing to do with his job. It had to
do with a personal incident at a party on a Saturday night. The next day
a crew cleaned out his office, and he was gone. He had a very fine
peresonality and I enjoyed knowing him.

Subject: Duplicates
Somebody wrote recently that he had a couple of duplicate shows and was
very embarrassed about it. Ha! I can do better than that. I've got 30
some duplicates and I'm very mad about it. Until I finally get my
collection onto the computer I have to work with my pencil scratches in
a loose leaf binder and I miss listings all the time when I go to place
an order. As a result I've got all these duplicates on cassette and CD
taking up space that I no longer have.
Therefore I'd like to trade my mistakes for yours. I'll accept anything
that I don't have from the 30's and 40's (Possibly the early 50's)
that's in good condition.
All of mine are purchased from reputable dealers and few have ever been
played even once. There are some common programs as well as some unusual
ones. Abbott and Costello, Bob Hope, Dr IQ, Beat The Band, Gangbusters,
Lone Ranger, Lux Radio Theatre, just to mention a few.
Email me off line and I'll send you my list.

Subject: James Aubrey
JackBenny@[removed] quotes and responds:
It wasn't Aubrey, because he was already gone long from CBS in '71,
having
left (been fired, IIRC) in 1965.
That makes more sense to me, as I'd heard that the firing of both Aubrey
and
Braselle from CBS was linked, at least in part, to Paley's ire over the
harsh
way that Jack Benny was dismissed.
I've also heard that another element in Aubrey's case was an affair with a
TV star (some sources leave her unnamed; others swear she was Julie Newmar,
then co-starring with Robert Cummings in the CBS sitcom "My Living Doll").
The allegation was that Aubrey was a full-throttle sadist in the affair and
that one particularly vicious tryst, which left Newmar with a serious
injury, took place in Aubrey's office on CBS property, leading to the
cancellation of "My Living Doll" and a huge financial settlement by CBS to
Newmar. A "blind item" retelling of the story in one of Harlan Ellison's
"Glass Teat" books adds the angle of organized crime to the whole sordid
matter.
One of Radiola Records' later releases was a soundtrack album for "That Was
The Week That Was," the David Frost satire series of 1964-65 on NBC-TV. One
of the bits on it was a Steve Allen "report" on a post-nuclear-attack
America in which the national capital had been moved to Fargo, the new
President was Dick Gregory and his Vice President was James Aubrey. Aubrey's
name got a fairly good laugh, suggesting that his firing was indeed a big
deal at the time.

Subject: "Have Gun--Will Travel" to Be Released on DVD
We all know that "Have Gun--Will Travel" was both a radio series
(starring John Dehner) and a television series (starring Richard Boone).
Well, it has just been announced that "Have Gun--Will Travel: 1st
Complete Season" will be released as a DVD set on May 11, 2004. It
features all 39 episodes from the first season (1957-1958) on 6 DVDs.
It has a list price of $[removed] but most internet discount DVD stores are
selling it for around $[removed]
What makes this exciting for OTR fans is that many radio stars are
featured in these 39 episodes: John Dehner (not playing Paladin, but
another character), Harry Bartell, Larry Dobkin, Vic Perrin, Olan Soule,
Jeanette Nolan, Karl Swenson, Parker Fennelly, Ralph Moody, Lurene
Tuttle, Jess Kirkpatrick, Marian Seldes, Ted de Corsia, Russell Thorson,
Joe De Santis, Ben Wright, Tyler McVey, and many more. So, if you want
to SEE the faces that match these wonderful radio voices, I'd recommend
getting this DVD set.

Subject: 12-7-41 Jack Benny Program
Bob Watson writes:
The announcements on my copy of the Jack Benny Program seem to be local,
instead of national announcements. Was this program the west coast
program or are the announcements actually for the east coast??
I believe at least one of the circulating airchecks of the Benny program
from that date was from WMAQ in Chicago. A couple of the war bulletins
interrupting that broadcast were included on Chuck Schaden's Pearl Harbor
anniversary broadcast of "Those Were The Days" over WNIB in Chicago on
December 7, 1991. Perhaps Chuck can shed a little additional light on this?

Subject: YTJD Quiz Answer and other things
Several weeks ago, I posed a question about Johnny Dollar - namely, what was
Johnny's phone number?
In the Calgary Matter of 7/13/50, Johnny has gone home to wait for unknown
persons to call. The phone rings at 10:08. The operator asks:
"Stanley 3469?" to verify the number of the recipient of the call.
So, there is the answer. Do you remember the days of named exchanges and 4
digit numbers (I will have to admint, that I barely remember the 4 digit
numbers, but my phone number for 16+ years was OTis 4-6748)
In a couple of weeks I will pose another question about my radio favorite,
Johnny Dollar.
= =============
I had the sad task of telling a friend that I had just listened to an
episode of YTJD in which Harry Bartell appeared, only to check my email and
learn of his passing.
I am relatively new to both OTR and to this newsletter. I never met Harry,
nor did I have the opportunity to converse with him. But everyone I know in
the OTR community seems to say the same thing - If you did know Harry, or
talked to him or e-mailed him, you had something special.
I think that the world needs a lot more Harry Bartells.
My condolences to his family and friends.

I realized that I had not joined others in the group by posting a message
about the wonderful Harry Bartell. I sent a message to Charlie personally.
So here it is, doesn't say enough.
<Dear Charlie,
Here I am quietly shedding tears for Harry Bartell, a man I never met, but
felt I knew like a friend.
His character, his humor, his integrity and his values were always clear and
uncompromising when he did communicate with the group. His loyalty to his
friends in radio, and refusal to provide 'juicy' stories about people he
worked with was a rare kind of integrity these days. His modesty was never
artificial. I forwarded a collection of birthday messages from
individuals in other groups to which I belong and he was truly amazed by
these messages. He was always so kind and surprised at the attention he got.
He wrote:
<Irene,
I'm going to ask a big favor: would you be good enough to let all of your
OTR friends who were kind enough to send birthday greetings know that I
received them and appreciate them no end. It is amazing to me that people
whom I have never met and never will, would take the time and care to write.
Thank you
Harry>
I so appreciated the series of articles he wrote for the group and thank you
so much for those moments of personal connection to him you made possible
for the whole group.
I had some off line correspondence with him from time to time and tried to
help Judi out with some episode-searching at his request.
Thanks again for making him part of our community. I sensed all was not
well and have been thinking about him a lot lately. I know your loss is
very personal.

Joe Ross writes:
Supposedly Braselle fired Jack with words along the lines of, "You're

keep him on for the specials, and was mightily upset when he'd heard
that Braselle had dismissed one of his "diamonds" in such a manner.
Was that when Jack moved back to NBC?
Yes. Jack was back on NBC for the final season of weekly television

Fellow Digester Steven M. Lewis and I accompanied my wife to New York's
Chinatown this morning in search of Dim Sum.
While waiting for her to make purchases at a local bakery we were stunned to
find that the "hot beverages" served included both Ovaline and
***Horlicks***. I mean, who has seen Horlicks anywhere since Lum and Abner
went off the air? My wife speculated that it probably hadn't been ordered
since then and they had some left over.
Still, it had to be tried. I was the volunteer and it tasted exactly like
milk with sugar in it. The Horlicks itself didn't seem to add any flavor to
the product whatsoever. If this stuff was ever popular it is a true
testament to the writers of Lum and Abner and not to the people that
invented it.
As an aside, you have to love a city where the Chinese bakery has not only
sells Horlicks but also borscht and tiramisu.
