Subject: The Return of TUNE IN
Hi,
Back in August 1992, I published the first issue of TUNE IN, my fanzine
devoted to old-time radio. I was 21 years old at the time and starting a
fanzine was a way for me to get in contact with other fans, and a place to
publish our opinions and any information about favorite series. Creativity
was also encouraged, as many issues contained fan-written radio scripts (the
ones in TUNE IN #1 & 2 were written by me, but others soon took over).
Putting out the zine was a blast, as it introduced me to many creative,
intelligent, and passionate folks who shared my interests. Part of the fun
didn't even take place in the pages of the zine, as I corresponded with many
of them through the mail. One of my most prolific correspondents was Shawn
Danowski, who was around my own age.
The last issue I had published was #16 in August 1996. Issue #17 was nearly
completed in March 1997, but for some reason I never got around to publishing
it, and I pretty much drifted out of OTR fandom entirely. I didn't find out
until a few years later, but Shawn Danowski passed away in 2005 at the age of
36. It's one of the regrets that I have about drifitng away that I lost
touch with someone whose time on this earth turned out to be more limited
than I would have imagined.
In 2008, I began publishing the comics fanzine Ditkomania, and so far have
put out 24 issues of that zine. I noticed that August 2012 is the 20th
anniversary of TUNE IN #1, so I decided to finally publish TUNE IN #17 to
mark the zine's 20th anniversary.
I printed it this morning (at the same store that I printed up TUNE IN #1
back in 1992 incidentally).
For this First Printing of #17, I've only made 50 copies -- half of which are
being sent out this afternoon to former subscribers and other interested
readers. If I sell out of the remaining copies of the First Printing, I'll
go back to the store and make another 50 copies and label that as the Second
Printing. (As with my Ditkomania fanzine, each copy is hand-numbered by me
in the indicia.) I wanted to be cautious before printing up more copies than
there might be demand for.
(Back in the 1990s, I only ever printed up around 40 copies of each issue of
TUNE IN. Whereas with my current Ditkomania fanzine, I print up 200 copies
of each issue, sometimes 300, for a First Printing run and have sold out on a
few of them.)
So, I just wanted to let everyone know that TUNE IN #17 is available now.
It's a 28-page (counting the covers) B&W digest, printed on a photocopier.
The price is $[removed] postpaid in the USA; $[removed] postpaid in Canada; $[removed]
postpaid in Mexico; and $[removed] postpaid for the rest of the world. Payment
can be made via Paypal to robimes@[removed] or by check or money order to Rob
Imes, 13510 Cambridge #307, Southgate, MI 48195.
The front cover is a montage of some of the 1990s TUNE IN covers. You can
view the cover at

I'm not sure how many more issues that I'll be putting out of the zine,
although I do plan at least a couple more, depending on response, feedback,
and submissions.
Last month, I mailed out letters (with SASEs inside) to TUNE IN's old
subscribers, asking them for updated contact info. Of course, the ones who
responded tended to be the ones who were still at the addresses that I mailed
the letters to. If any of my old friends from the 1990s who used to read
TUNE IN are still out there, drop me a line at the address above (either
email or postal mail).
Thanks,
Rob Imes

Chad Rinne cr_musician@[removed] had a question about a recording with a
"WOR Feature" label;
I don't have an answer to his question, but it brought back a memory. In the
1940s, my father and my uncle had an office at 1440 Broadway in New York,
the same building that housed the WOR and Mutual studios. When I was about
eight or nine years old I went to their office for a day. Trying to keep me
out of their hair and amuse me, they took me to a WOR studio, where I was
seated in the back, behind the two DJs at a table, facing the control rooms,
and was told to sit quietly. There I experienced my first live radio show.
The only thing I remember, other than what the studio looked like, was the
record, "Put 'em in a Box, Tie 'em with a Ribbon, and Throw 'em in the Deep
Blue Sea."
I guess that experience was what led me to my career as a radio engineer for
forty-six years, working at WGLI-WTFM in New York, WTIC-AM-FM in Hartford,
and finally Voice of America.
