Hello Mr. Binyon. I have one of those "Phantom Pilot" pins also, that I
bought back in the 1970'[removed] yours have a Black Airplane on the front of
the pin with the logo, "The Phantom Pilot " written across it?The medal is
sort of a silvery color. I suppose that probably was the only premium
connected with [removed] bad some of those shows aren't available. Would love to
have some of them in my [removed] New Year! Bob Slate

I don't recognize any names on this list who are no longer with us.

Allow me to correct "Lima Romay" to Lina--a delightful lady and
former MGM contract player who can be seen singing with Xavier
Cugat's orchestra in the film "Bathing Beauty."

Also, I question the writing credit for Charles Lane. It's possible,
but he never mentioned anything like that to me.

Here's how else I know the Goldbergs were on CBS during their live
years:
<snip>
By the way if I'm not mistaken there was a mid-1950s Goldberg revival
that was filmed for first-run syndication.

According to Alex McNeil's =Total Television=, the Goldbergs were on
CBS from 12 January 1949 - 18 June 1951 on NBC from 4 February 1952 -
14 July 1952 and 3 July 1953 - 25 September 1953, on DuMont from 13
April 1954 - 19 October 1954, and in Syndication 1954-1955. In the
syndicated version, the Goldbergs had left the Bronx for the suburbs.

Hi there.
I'm searching for an obscure Horace Heidt recording from 1948.
My father was part of a quartet (he played trombone) that appeared on the
show, I believe on May 2nd of that year as part of the Horace Heidt Youth
Opportunity Program Talent Presentations.

Would anyone happen to have such a thing? If not, any idea where I might
track it down?

Any leads would be most appreciated.

Thanks much!

Shannon

I apologize for not mentioning that the radio listing for 'Mad Masters' was
identified as comedy, starring Monty and Natalie Masters. Just like many

Jack Benny, there were musical interludes But the program I'm discussing
is identified as a comedy program, not a musical program and its stars were
Monty and Natalie Masters. I did an archival search to see if I could
find an earlier version of the program from KPO where it would have
originated, but was not able to find another mention of the show
pre-NBC.

As the OTR script archives of Thousand Oaks Library outside of LA will
show, Monty Masters, as writer, producer, and/or performer had several
musical variety shows around the same period as "Mad Masters." Among
the half hour scripts in the Monty Masters collection at that library
are:

1) Spotlight Playhouse, March thru August 1946 at KGO, variety sketches

2) Eddie King Show, Nov 1947 to Aug 1948, music and humor

3) Ready For Brady, Jan 1948 to Jun 1949, music and humor (almost same
cast as Eddie King Show)

4) Monty Masters Show, Sept 1948 to Sep 1949 at KNBC: Harlow Burgess
Orchestra, vocalist Tommy Harris, and comedy sketches with Natalie and
Monty. The 11-20-48 show contained a western cowboy sketch with Lew
Valentine as a main character. Other singers in later programs were:
Barbara Lee, Bill Lockwood, Consuela Gonzales, and Clancy Hayes.

I might get flamed by lovers of the show, but was The Great Gildersleeve
considered a superior comedy at the time? I just listened to several Willard
Waterman episodes. They just weren't funny! A lot of the jokes died, and the
stories were awful.

[More subjectively, the actress who played Lela had a hideous vibratto
southern accent and Peavy The Druggist's drone sounded more sinister than
homespun.]
