Subject: Jack Benny's Maxwell?
I was reading Stephen King's "On Writing", his book about his life and his
work, and he mentions that when he was in high school, he had a classmate
whose parents entered all kinds of contests and once they won "Jack Benny's
Maxwell". Is Steve mis-remembering or was there actually such a contest? He
says that the Maxwelll sat in their yard for quite a few years.

Subject: King Kong was on the radio!
Michael Giorgio in Waukesha, WI asked:
I found a tape recently marked (by hand) King Kong, Radio Broadcast, 1938,
at a garage sale. It is definitely an old-time audio production, but there
is no opening, no closing, and no credits. Does anyone have any idea what
this is?
I am surprised no one has bothered to answer this so I guess I'll take a
crack at it.
In the spring of 1933, RKO Pictures released KING KONG, the movie that needs
no introduction. In what was considered the "Jurasic Park" of its time,
(and is still phenominal), RKO worked an agreement with the National
Broadcasting Company (NBC) to broadcast a six-chapter serial based on the
movie. it wasn't until circa 1931-1933 (yeah, subject to debate) that the
movie studios started realizing that the new and growing medium of radio
could be used for publicity and advertising. Until then, studios kept their
valued actors under contract away from radio, fearing that if movie goers
heard their favorite stars each week, they wouldn't go to the theater to see
them in action.
Rational thinking, no doubt, but RKO jumped on radio and from March 18, 1933
to April 22, 1933, NBC broadcasted a six-chapter radio serial adapted from
the screenplay. KING KONG was no flop in the theaters and I doubt the radio
chapter play was the only reason but it certainly helped - thee's no such
thing as bad publicity.
Anyway, the serial was broadcast on Saturday evenings from 6:30 - 6:45 [removed],
EST (and 5:30 - 5:45 [removed] CST). Regrettably, there is no known information
about the cast, producer, director, etc.
For the record, the KING KONG is a "lost" radio serial and not known to
exist in recorded form. Information regarding the cast and production crew
is mere speculation (and I'm holding that back for now) but what Michael
described "could" be the lost serial. The reason most people have not heard
of this serial is because no one has really documented much about it and
since it doesn't exist, who would have thunk?
If Michael would be willing to humor us for a moment and send a copy of the
recording my way, I'll check it out using the material I have on hand (and
with the assistance of a fellow friend, Michael Price, an expert on KING
KONG), we'll be able to verify if the recording is legit. Reason being,
there are two recordings made and in circulation based on the KING KONG
story, one being an LP released in the 1960s or 1970s and it's possible
Michael has the LP recording. Price and I could verify whether Michael
found the "lost" serial or not. The fact that Michael's recording features
no credits is a tip that he may have the "lost" serial. But his cassette
says 1938? Could be misdated. Maybe rebroadcast??
to be continued . . .

Hi Gang:
My pal Andy from Vintage Broadcasts concluded his tribute to the late Jackson
Beck with:
I would say, I put Jackson Beck in a class by himself or along with some
other distinguished alumni: William Conrad, Paul Frees, Alexander Scourby to
name but a few.
I'd humbly like to add that when I attended his funeral last week, Jackson's
friend & voice-over colleague Jeff David made mention of the fact that the
great Orson Welles once dubbed Mr. Beck "The King of Voice-Overs," and that
similar accolades were accorded Jackson by Ed Herlihy, Alexander Scourby, and
Leon Janney.
In hindsight, I just don't have any legitimate excuse for leaving that bit of
information out of my original posting.
Best always from th ether,
Derek Tague

I'm sure I'm not the first to notice, by any means, the large number of OTR
actors who appeared on The Andy Griffith Show (1960-68) which is still in
re-runs today. What a treat it is to watch an old episode of the "gang from
Mayberry" and recognize an OTR actor. I'm certain there are many I cannot
put a name to, but recognize the voice. A few of the more notable OTR actors
appearing on that show, however, include Olan Soule (1909-1994), Les
Tremayne (1913-2003), Parley Baer (1914-2002), Lurene Tuttle (1907-1986),
Lawrence Dobkin (1919-2002), Richard Crenna (1926-2003), John Dehner
(1915-1992), Howard McNear (1905-1969), Hope Summers (1896-1979), and Edgar
Buchanan (1903-1979). Does Producer Sheldon Leonard (1907-1997) count? Who
did I miss?

Can anyone help Jill out?
Dear Sir or Madam:
I have a co-worker that is looking for an old radio show called "Roses and
Drums". It was set during the American Civil and was about a southern
belle and her northern beau.
If you have any information, please let me know. Thank you for your
assitance in this matter.
