Subject: THE SHADOW; A CONTROVERSARY

The stories about the violence on Radio and the criticism of the programs by
various 'puretry' organizations of the day, brings to mind that the Legion Of
Decency of the Catholic Church, ran an article in some of the Media
publications as well as their own about the 'immoral life-style of Lamont
Cranston.' It seems they objected to the opening credit each week that
proclaimed ...'Cranston's friend an CONSTANT COMPANION, the lovely Margo
Lane, is the only person who knows to whom the voice of the invisible Shadow
belongs'....What they objected to was the reference to Margo being a
'constant companion' without being married. This was a 'no-no' back then
with the Catholic Review and looked upon as immoral. They advised parents
with young children to put this program on their 'condemned' list Obviously,
nothing ever came of this edict, as the opening was there each week until the
Shadow went off the air. I am sure there are other examples along this same
line that other posters may recall of other programs.

Which reminds us that the word "barbarian" (and the name Barbara) was
derived from the impression of Romans that the uncouth languages of
savages (to the Romans basically anyone from anywhere else) sounded to
them like the meaningless muttering of "bar bar bar bar."

Further, the word "rube" was used by carnival people to describe
ignorant and naive bumpkins (more or less synonymous with "barbarian").
"Hey, Rube!" is the well known carny call to arms, summoning them to
help defend one of their own against assault by one or more townies, or

Thus "rube-barb"came to refer to the babble and, thence, the mob action

In issue 91, Philip Harwood asked if Roma Wines, Cresta Blanca, or Petri
Wine was still produced. I work part time in a wine shop in MN, and we
don't have or can't get any of these. However, we do have a Petri
Brandy. It is bottled in Princeton, MN by Johnson Brothers, who is also
a big distributor up here. It is pretty cheap stuff ($[removed] per liter).
The manager of the store said the above wines were pretty much
substandard jug wines, even "worse" than the "cheap stuff" (his words)
that was available in a jug then (and still is today), such as Gallo,

of a set of ETs that I borrowed in 1975 from an AM station in Huron, SD.
There are four different stories in this set which may have been intended as

There are many "classic" gags from television which were "classic" gags
from Burlesque and Vaudeville, many years before.

Another Lucy program showed Ethel and Lucy crushing grapes in a huge
barrel. Old bit.

Yet another had Lucy and Ethel working in a cake bakery, where the assembly
line kept moving faster while they tried to add icing, cherries, etc. I
think most folk of an age to have seen this [removed], initially when
first aired via [removed] also recall Jackie Gleason doing the same
thing, I think in his guise of "The Simple Soul"? Seems to me I recall
Red Skelton in the same bakery bit.

I think I've seen that routine done by at least five other comedians over
the years.

Just goes to prove that good, funny material will never die. Not even when
Milton Berle goes!

Nothing beats a good laugh. Over and over.

Since the Digest has been exploring decoder rings over the past few days, I
thought I'd throw another puzzler into the fray. Has anyone heard of the
Capt. Marvel ring? I saw one offered on e-Bay a couple of months ago, and
it is pictured in a number of price guides, usually with the caveat "alleged
to be a Capt. Marvel premium." The ring is gold and red, Capt. Marvel's
colors all right, and has a lighting bolt on part of the top. In the center
is a compass. The lighting bolt fits but the compass? I don't see the
connection. Anyway, I have never seen any kind of documentation that
supports the connection to Capt. Marvel and just wondered if any of you have
run across anything that does so.

I recall lucys movies from the forties and even though she used light comedy,

to me. At that time, we did an interview with her for our Yesterday USA

There were lots of cryptological premiums on OTR, mostly cipher devices.

You have a pretty exhaustive list of OTR decoder premiums, but you've missed one. The
Space Patrol rocket cockpit, offered by Nestles in 1954 on both the radio and television
versions of Space Patrol, contained both a coder and a decoder. The code as actually a
cipher and consisted of the letters of the words "Nestles chocolates and cocoas taste the
best" combined with numbers, so that A was "N-1", B was "E-2", etc.

To Bill Murtough

Thanks for the Info on Cliff Johnson. I've been planning to inquire about him.

In the early forties, he had a morning talk show before he moved to River
Forest and brought in his family . His style reminded me of Wally Phillips.
I used to listen to him while I got ready to go to school.
For a while on that earlier solo show, he had a contest where listeners would
send in their phone numbers, and he would call one or two a day. If they
answered the phone by saying "Enriched Tip Top is Better Bread" they would
receive a prize of $[removed] A lot of money in those days

That reminded me of an earlier radio contest (about 1940) A form was
available at one of the grocery store chains. It looked like a Bingo card,
but instead of a number, each of the squares was a popular song title. They
would play some of the songs on their 15 minute or half hour radio program.
The trick was to to identify the song and if you got five across you won.
The form was brought to the grocery store, and if verified you won the prize.
It was $[removed] worth of groceries. In those days that was several shoopping
bagsful and enough to feed a family for a week. I can't remember what they
called this program or what grocery chain sponsored it.
Someone should remember it.

We also listened to the "$64 Dollar Question" sponsored by Eversharp fountain
pens. They were "Guaranteed not for years, not for life, but guaranteed
forever"
No one ever thought that there would be no company to honor the warranty.

We were just as excited about these less than $100 quiz shows and contests as
people are today with the Million Dollar shows.
