Subject: Fourth Wall Talk.

For those who have Netflix, stream the first Burns and Allen episode. You
will see general confusion on how to handle the fourth wall situation. In
that episode there was literally a fourth wall that George stepped over.
It was a sort of fake brick thing. Talk about awkward? I wondered whether
he wasn't worried about tripping? Gracie shows her discomfort with a
television camera by placing her back to it as much as possible and the
writers
seemed to be fumbling with finding what to do in the new medium. In Georges
book "Gracie, a Love Story" George tells that she hated the medium. She sure
showed it in the first episode.

The show demonstrated the difficulty of a transition from radio to TV.
There were a lot of kinks to work out.

I wonder?

Would we consider Shakespeare someone who broke down the fourth wall? I
would also suggest that the phenomenon goes all the way back to Greek times
- but then, one might say that there wasn't any wall in the amphitheater
from which to break forth.

I have encountered two recordings of 1945-02-08 "A Tale Of Two Sisters" with
Claire Trevor and Nancy Kelly

One starts with "Now, Roma Wines [removed]"

The other starts with "Now, the Roma Wine Company of Fresno, California

I don't know if I have a pair of East Coast and West Coast recordings or if I
have a broadcast and a rehearsal.

Anyone have any clues? I have put the recordings online and they can be
downloaded at

The link expires in a week or so.

 From Those Were The Days

10/31

1942 One of the great wartime shows premiered. CBS debuted Thanks to
the Yanks, starring Bob Hawk. It became one of the most popular of the
wartime programs.

11/1

1937 The first broadcast of Hilltop House was aired on CBS; while on
NBC, the comic strip character Terry and the Pirates debuted.

11/2

1931 Myrt and Marge was heard for the first time on CBS. The
program centered on two chorus girls who competed for the same parts and
the same men. The creator and writer (Cliff Thomas wrote some) of the
series, Myrtle Vail, also played the role of Myrt; and the original
Marge was performed by Vail's daughter, Donna Fick. Three other
performers played the part when Donna died giving birth. Myrt and Marge
continued for 11 years.

11/5

1934 The first broadcast of The Gumps was heard on CBS. Wilmer Walter
played Andy Gump, Agnes Moorehead was Gump's wife, Min, and Jackie Kelk
was son, Chester. Karo syrup and Pebico toothpaste/tooth powder sponsored.

1950 "The greatest stars of our time on one big program" was the
introduction by actress Tallulah Bankhead, who opened the 90 minute Big
Show on NBC. It was a big show all right. The peacock saw red as losses
exceeded a million dollars in the three years the program was on the air.

I was just looking over a new text book involving old time radio and read a
segment concerning African-American soaps on the radio. THese were broadcast
over something called the National Negro Network(NNN). DOes anyone know if any
of these shows are available in circulation? Furthermore, does anyone know if
any programs from the NNN still exist? I teach a radio history course online
for a university and some of these programs might be useful for class. It
seems that my section over ethnic diversity in classic radio still remains
limited to Amos and Andy. I know there must be more examples out there.
Perhaps some of you can suggest others along these lines. If any group can
help me out I know that this group can.
Blessings,
