Subject: WSJ Covers "Queen for a Day"
Cynthia Crossen's "Deja Vu" column in today's Wall Street Journal covers one
of the original reality shows, "Queen for a Day," and its legacy.
I always thought she should do a comparison of Major Bowe's Amateur Hour and
American Idol as well.
Anyway, interesting reading about how the show evolved:

Subject: Days Gone By
At Sean Dougherty's suggestion I read Nilds Rego's Column in the
Contra Costa Times it was very good. She had a quote from a reader that
hit home to me
* "Radio bailed us out," said Les Krames of Moraga. "Kept our spirits
up."*
Oh, how true. When I was 6 or 7 years old in 1936 I contracted Scarlet
Fever in. Those days The doctor reported a contagious disease the
health department ( Cook County, Chicago area) and a big sign with red
letters was nailed to the front door. The sign said danger no one is
allowed in this residence because of Scarlet Fever. My Mother and I were
quarantined for a month, and I had stay in bed. My Father and sister had
move to a hotel and could only visit my mother standing out side on the
porch.
What do you do with with a first grader who can hardly read. My mother
read to me a lot. I wanted to listen radio but that was in the living
room on the first floor. It was very big and weighed a ton. After my
mother was at her wits end. My father bought a small radio that I could
have in my room. From the time it arrived it was on almost all the time
from "Back Stage Wife " to Al Jolsons " Life Boy Show" and many others
. Maybe I didn't understand every thing, but I listened and was
entertained. My mother was relieved. It was a very long month.

Hello Everyone,
I am happy to announce that after a complete computer crash, having to
buy a new one and then finding it has this new 'Vista' system (I have my own
name for it) which caused none of my old programs to work (one of the
companies laughed at me and asked if they could have the old program CD for
their museum!) that FINALLY my 2008 Supplement is ready!
That is the good news, the bad news is that when the old computer crashed
I lost a lot of my old address files. Therefore if you have not ordered
anything from me within the last year the possibility of me having your
address to send you a copy is "slim to none"
So, while you are all laughing at me and shaking your head 'poor Ted' if
you are interested in the new supplement drop me an email (yes I have figured
the email out on this thing) and I'll be happy to send you a copy. Just let
me know if you prefer it sent by email or CD.
Many thanks,
Ted Davenport

I always wondered how somebody got a job like that. I mean, do you fill
out a job application, go thru an employment agency, network your friends
for openings or what?

Subject: Muriek Kirkpatrick MacPherson
My local newspaper The (Newark NJ) Star-Ledger reports on the passing of
Muriel Kirkpatrick MacPherson at the age of 83.
[removed];coll=1
Ms. Macpherson lived in Allendale NJ and worked in early television as a
hostess/ "weather girl" on NBC-TV's "The Today Show" with Dave Garroway and J.
Fred Muggs. Said obituary noted that Muriel Kirkpatrick started out as a
"script girl" for radio's "Duffy's Tavern."
One often encounters this term "script girl" when reading about OTR, but what
excatly did a script girl do? Can any of the astute historians who post here
elaborate further? I imagine she probably co-ordinated the acting and
technical scripts being ever so diligent to assure that actors and sound/S-FX
engineers were given the most recent versions of the final scripts. Didn't
novelist Jacqueline Susann start out as a script girl? Were there also "script
boys"?
It's such a shame that in the annals of OTR that there are so many countless
behind-the-scenes people whose names are lost to histor, as is probab;y the
case involving such "behind-the-scene-rs." Since Ms. Kirkpatrick MacPherson
lived in New Jersey, she might have made for an interesting guest at the
nearby "Friends of old Time Radio" (FOTR) [removed] anybody knew about
her to have invited her.
Yours always in the ether,
Derek Tague

A Canadian newspaper publishes an article on what life was like the week of
February 5-12, 1942. Not surprisingly, radio played a major role in people's
lives.
