Sadly, I miss Peter Ustinov already. We lost him last March to a failure of
the [removed] organ, not the spirit.
That was a wonderful site featuring him reading Thurber stories, but the
sound was very bad at my end and I had to stop.
I wonder if anyone has the entire recording.
    Love to hear the rest.
I suddenly remember one sunny day mid 70s, I had just parked my vintage
1941 Packard in the parking lot at Schwab's Drugstore on Sunset Boulevard and
was eager for my usual breakfast and socializing that was almost a guarantee
at that fabled establishment.
I walked past Lenny the shoeshine guy, we nodded as usual, he looking at
my feet and scowling because I wore sandals and me saluting his courage to
work on sunny hot days in a parking lot.
Then I heard it. Softly at first.
Children's [removed] the corner on Sunset.
Rounding same corner on my way to the front door and my much anticipated
view of the delightfully beautiful Turkish woman behind the counter as I
entered every morning, I heard said laughter grow in intensity.
Thinking it perhaps a group of children on an outing I was thrilled to
see them standing in a small circle surrounding a very animated Peter
Ustinov.
I froze. He was making faces and sounds as only he could and I too was
captured for a goodly time. The kids were in laughter heaven. A woman seemed
to be in charge of the lot which was about six or seven and even she was
captivated.
He would shoot me an occasional wink from time to time as if to allow us
both acknowledgment of and entrance into that sacred world of wonder that
exists in all children [removed], actor's too as Marlon Brando had
mentioned to me over the phone only the night before.
What better corroboration could a person need.
    Now it seemed for certain.
I was doomed to lead the life of a child.
A fact my lady friend never ceases to remind me of.
So, if some kind soul has more Ustinov readings I would be thrilled to
hear from them off line.
Now I must go outside and play because I can now hear two very
entrancing sounds.
Kids laughing and a jackhammer at work on my street.
    Wow. Gotta go.
Maybe I better have some lunch first so I can stay out longer.
                        Michael C. Gwynne

Hello -- I suppose I'll be one of a number of people to explain the praise
"Jessica, You're Draggin' Your Net", heard on a Phil Harris-Alice Faye show.
It is a word play on Jessica Dragonet, a popular semi-classical singer heard
on a number of OTR programs in the thirties and forties.
I see a lot of plugs for books on the Digest. I have several out -- I
have a story about Tom Mix in "It's That Time Again" Vol. 1 and two stories
about Sherlock Holmes and The Avenger plus the job of editor on Vol. 2 of that
series, $15 ea. from BearManor or me. Paperback trade editions of my
non-fiction books, "The Great Radio Heroes" and "Radio Mystery and Adventure"
are offered at $35 each from McFarland or from me.
Also my science-fiction collection, featuring stories of special interest to
fans I Love a Mystery, The Shadow, Lone Ranger, and of course Dimension X and
X Minus One, the book called
"Harmon's Galaxy" is available for $15 from Wildside Press or directly from

Hello, all!
The AMOS N ANDY SHOW debate I was referring to in a recent posting was between
the characters of(I think I am right here) Shorty Johnson and Algonquin J.
Calhoun, the attorney. Does this stir anyone's memory? Any help is greatly
appreciated as I need the material for a convention of educators I am
attending next week, where I will be doing a workshop about OTR in the
classroom.
By the way, be looking for a textbook(for middle and high school levels) that
I will have completed sometime in the next year. I will keep you posted and I
hope that you will free to send me ideas for things to include in my workshops
and texts.
Just putting a little something in old OTR pot, boy.

Is there a log for "Jack Armstrong"? I'm confused by various names for the

story advanced and the above titles are all of the same story line?

Yes, that would parody on Jessica Dragonette the very popular singer of the
day. She played Vivian the Coca Cola girl in the late 1920s and was a hugley
successful when she appeared on the Cities Service Concert program on NBC
1930-37. 1941-1946 she was featured on the Saturday Night Serenade program on

Nice to hear people remembering the late 1960s James
Thurber TV sitcom "My World and Welcome to It". I
remember it fondly, although I haven't had a good look
at it since I was a kid.
The show's link to OTR was Henry Morgan, who played
one of the writers at the "Manhattanite" --- the "New
Yorker"-type magazine, where the show's Thurberesque
protagonist played by William Windom was a cartoonist.
In addtion, a trip to Internet Movie Database tells
me that Sheldon Leonard was a producer and sometime
director on the show.
I can't think of any radio shows drawn from Thurber
material, and am certainly not the expert. However,
Thurber certainly drew from radio. His "Soapland"
series (reprinted in his book "The Beast in Me and
Other Animals" is a funny and perceptive look at radio
soap operas, written during their heyday.

Has there ever been a successful repair of a broken or cracked phonograph
record? I once read that, after the lacquer master had been recorded,
certain 'microsurgery' techniques were used to correct certain problems (I
think it was an article in _Popular Electronics_.) It would seem that such
measures might restore shows that would otherwise be lost.

Which show(air date?) is it that features the political
debate between tow AMOS N ANDY characters?

We haven't heard from Elizabeth for a while, and she should be the
one to handle this, but I have an episode presumably from 1928 in
which A'n'A discuss the presidential election. Could that be the one
you mean?

Elizabeth McLeod hasn't been online for some time now owing to some serious
health issues which led to her having surgery recently. She is certainly
the best person to answer the query, but at the moment she has no 'net
access at all. (She's not too happy about it either. <g>) She'll be easing
her way back to work as quickly as she can (and probably faster than she
should), but in the meantime it's important to understand that she's not
dropping the ball or snubbing anyone, she's just unwell at the moment.

Most of you here have seen her postings to the digest -- she has been
extremely generous in sharing her knowledge, time and research with many of
us over the years. For anyone new to the list, she is one of the most
knowledgeable broadcast historians out there and has a true gift for
imparting her knowledge in an articulate & thoughtful manner. And she wrote
the book on Amos'n'Andy. Literally. "The Original Amos'n'Andy: Freeman
Gosden, Charles Correll and the 1928-1943 Radio Serial" will be published
by McFarland in the not-too-distant future. I hope lots of people buy the
book, whether out of interest in the subject or as a "thank you" to her for
her generosity. There isn't anyone I can think of who deserves it more.
