Hi, All.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, I eagerly awaited the release of each new
20-tape, 60-episode (and later 40-episode) OTR collections that Radio Spirits
put out, and I bought nearly all of them. I played through the tapes in each
set once, then put them on the shelf. As I prepare to move sometime in the
coming year, I'm looking to trim down my collection of OTR tapes. I'm offering
my entire collection of 20-tape collections for $200 (shipping included in the
continental US) or best offer. Here are the details:
Eighteen (18) 20-tape collections with all original booklets
360 tapes / 1,079 shows / 510 hours
The following 20-tape collections are included:
Old-Time Radio's Greatest Detectives (40-episode collection)
The Best of Gunsmoke on Radio (60-episode collection)
The 60 Greatest Old-Time Radio Shows (60-episode collection)
Old-Time Radio's Greatest Shows (40-episode collection)
Old-Time Radio's Greatest Mysteries (60-episode collection)
The 60 Greatest Old-Time Radio Shows of the 20th Century (60-episode
collection)
Comedy from the Golden Age of Radio (60-episode collection)
Old-Time Radio's Greatest Shows (60-episode collection)
Old-Time Radio's 60 All-Time Favorites (60-episode collection)
60 Greatest Old-Time Radio Shows Starring Frank Sinatra and Friends
(60-episode collection)
Old-Time Radio's Greatest Comedies (40-episode collection
Tales Well Calculated to Keep You In Suspense (60-episode collection)
Tales Well Calculated to Keep You In Suspense, Volume 2 (60-episode
collection)
CBS's 60 Greatest Old-Time Radio Shows (60-episode collection)
Old-Time Radio's Greatest Detectives (60-episode collection)
Old-Time Radio's Greatest Westerns (60-episode collection)
Superman with Batman and Robin on Radio (119-episode collection)
The Lone Ranger on Radio (60-episode collection)
I am the original owner of these tapes; I bought them brand new from the Radio
Spirits catalog between 1998 and 2005 (paying about $60 each -- over $1,000
total). They have been well-stored in a smoke-free, pet-free home since then.
Over the last few years, I have played through all of the tapes on a high-end
cassette deck and can confirm that they are all in good playable shape. The
sound quality of these tapes is often superior to the heavily compressed MP3s
floating around the internet. All of the sets are complete with original
illustrated booklets (most between 50-70 pages) with detailed program notes
(most by Anthony Tollin), cast identifications, synopses, show histories, and
lots of photographs. The two Suspense sets did not come with booklets. These
are all very handsome productions.
Most of the tapes have been played once and only once. A few may have been
played two or three times, but none more than that. In general, the vinyl
cases are in excellent condition. Over time, the plastic in the binding has a
tendency to become brittle, and a few of these have splits where the cover
connects to the spine; in a few cases, I repaired the splits with clear tape.
At one time, I assigned numbers to every cassette in my collection, and some
of the spines have a small label with the numbers I assigned the cassettes
inside -- though the cassettes inside are unmarked. The tapes in one of the
Suspense sets have little numbers attached; they are not harmful and will not
hinder playback at all. I just wanted to note their presence. All other tapes
are unmarked and generally in like-new condition with just one exception: Tape
17 (The Life of Riley) in the 40-episode "Old-Time Radio's Greatest Comedies"
collection has a repaired cracked shell; that one tape looks nasty, but it
plays.
For photographs of the collection or more information, please contact me
off-list. The tapes are also available for pick-up in Pittsburgh, PA.
Thanks!
Bryan Wright

Folks;
As some of you know, I've had some trouble recently with PayPal (not
uncommon for low-volume users), to the point where I needed to refund some
donations while I was cleaning things up. I _think_ everything's now resolved
(until the next time, anyway), but with the work I'm doing on the Nostalgia
Expo videos, I wanted to see if an alternative might make sense. Since this
isn't OTR-related, really, I've posted it to my blog at

or direct email for your comments.
While I'm interrupting the Digest, let me remind you that if you ever need
to contact me, complete info is at the bottom of _every_ issue; just scroll
past the last posting and you'll see a whole bunch of (hopefully) helpful
pointers and links.

This Week's Classics & Curios Show:
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 174
AN EDDIE HUBBARD SPECIAL: JUNE SONGS
Time to celebrate the month of June with performances by Jimmy Dorsey,
Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Marty Robbins, the Four Lads, the Brothers
Four, and the Erskine Hawkins orchestra. Eddie Hubbard's June Special
has all of those performers and more on this undated special episode
from Eddie's private collection, and, of course, songs relate to
romance, weddings, graduation, or simply summer fun and memories.
The Jimmy Dorsey band does "Give Me a June Night," Bing sings "The
Wiffenpoof Song," Frank performs "Love and Marriage," Marty sings "A
White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation," the Lads do "Moments to
Remember," the Brothers contribute "The Green Leaves of Summer," and
Erskine Hawkins and his band add "Tuxedo Junction."
Additional June tunes include ("The Wedding Song (There Is Love)" by
Noel Paul Stookey, "White Silver Sand" by Don Rondo, "Roses Are Red, My
Love" by Bobby Vinton, and "Save the Last Dance for Me" by Ben E. King
and the Drifters.
So to sum up this Eddie Hubbard Special, in short, "June Is Bustin' Out
All Over," -- a song from "Carousel," and, appropriately, it's that
great tune by Rogers and Hammerstein that opens the show. "Junction,"
composed in 1940 by Hawkins, Bill Johnson, and Buddy Feyne, closes the
show with the great Wilbur Bascomb's "delicate but swinging trumpet"
solo that helped make it the band's best hit and its theme song -- not
to mention the fact that carefree high-school grads danced to the song
at proms all across the [removed], especially after Glenn Miller's
legendary slower version hit the juke boxes. As the Brothers Four sang
in "The Green Leaves of Summer," "Twas so good to be young then."
[For more on Erskine Hawkins and his orchestra check out George T.
Simon's THE BIG BANDS with a foreword by Frank Sinatra.]
