Sorry I have not replied to this sooner but I am on holiday in Thailand as I
am writing this.
Dr Biel wrote:
They would rather do away with their second most popular site than have to
explain its popularity to some of the stodgy members of the upper government

I am not sure if this comment is the actual situation or the policy.
However, there is a ring of truth. For those who clicked onto the link and
looked at the postings from site users, there seems to be genuine anger at
the BBC for closing down the Cult site. The BBC is and has remained
somewhat of an enigma to me. It produces and has produced some of the
greatest radio and TV material. Also the website is second to none.
However, some of its decision making seems to be [removed] (sorry
I am on holiday so I have to relax).
Thanks Dr Beil for your comment. It almost made things easier to accept!!

Irene asked of Hal Stone about a particular "Archie Andrews" episode:
Archie is played by James Dobson,
the only acting credit given, but Jughead sure sounds like Hal Stone.
Dunning says that the NBC period started on 6/2/45. Can Hal provide more
information, and why wasn't Bob Hastings playing Archie?
This might come off as a dumb question but here goes; Is this James Dobson
the same dude who runs the Focus on the Family radio ministry?
Yours in the ether,
Derek Tague

In a message dated 7/13/05 11:18:22 PM Central Daylight Time,
[removed]@[removed] writes:
As I
remember, they divorced in the fifties or sixties, Cathy died soon after of
a heart attack, and Elliott went on to marry Mary Jane Croft (Our Miss
Brooks, Mel Blanc Show, etc.) whom he actually had known since 1939.
According to the IMdB, Cathy Lewis lived another ten years after her 1958
divorce from Elliott. In that time her TV roles included Molly in the
short-lived TV version of "Fibber McGee & Molly" and the role in which I
remember seeing
her, Diedre on "Hazel" in the 1960s.
Elliott apparently married Mary Jane Croft in '59 and they stay married until
his passing in 1990.

Subject: Grand Ole Opry - NBC premiere
I just recently acquired Charles K. Wolfe's excellent book "A Good-Natured
Riot," about the early years (1925-40) of WSM's "Grand Ole Opry." Toward the
end of the book, Wolfe writes that an air check of the first NBC network
broadcast of "The Prince Albert Show" (the half-hour of the Opry sponsored by
Prince Albert tobacco), which aired on October 14, 1939, was discovered in
the basement of the ad agency (Wm. Esty). Wolfe goes on to describe the
broadcast in detail.
I know the odds are long on this, but does anyone on the list know where I
can obtain a copy of this show? I have two reasons for seeking it. One,
I'll be giving a presentation about the Opry in honor of its 80th Anniversary
at my home club (Metro Washington OTR) this November. Two, my dad - a big
country music fan - was born on that date. I'd love to give him a copy as a
birthday present.
If anyone can help, please contact me off-list.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Hayde

Just a note to let everyone know that I've been advised by the folks at
McFarland & Co. that my book, "The Original Amos 'n' Andy -- Freeman
Gosden, Charles Correll, and the 1928-1943 Radio Serial," is now
shipping. This is a 7 x 10, 216-page, illustrated hardbound book
presenting the most detailed study yet attempted of Correll and Gosden's
most significant and most overlooked radio work, and explaining just how
the original "Amos 'n' Andy" truly was the foundation stone for the
entire OTR era.
[removed] is suggesting delivery in two to three weeks, and you can
order from there via a direct link from my website
([removed]~[removed]) while the McFarland website is
promising "immediate shipment." Either place, the price is $45.
Thanks to everyone who's inquired about the book -- and I hope you all
enjoy!

Subject: Box 13??
I was browsing through the Vincent Terrace book "Radio Programs
1924-1984, A Catalog of Over 1800 Shows" and I came across this entry
under the "Let George Do It" program.
"If the job is too tough for you to do, you've got a job for me. Box
13."
Now, what is wrong with that? And I have seen the same mistake
repeated elsewhere. I have heard that if a mistake is repeated often
enough it becomes fact, let's hope not. Box 13 has nothing to do with
George Valentine, it is Dan Holiday's address.
I will say that it seems as though Terrace has corrected his mistake,
I have not seen it in later books that he has written.

find it to be a nice, continuing story. The problem is we have discs of the
first sixteen shows plus several numbered beyond 110. Anyone out there have
other broadcasts from the syndicated series?
