From Those Were The Days
12/30
1936 The famous feud between Jack Benny and Fred Allen was ignited.
After a 10 year old performer finished a violin solo on The Fred Allen
Show. Allen's comment on the East Coast broadcast was, "What do you
know, Murray? A little fella in the fifth grade at school and already he
plays better than Jack Benny." This got four seconds of laughter, and
the show moved on. It didn't take long for Mr. Benny to respond. The
humorous feud lasted until Allen's death in 1956.
1942 Mr. and Mrs. North debuted on NBC. Joseph Curtin played Jerry
North and Alice Frost played Pam. A typical Mr. and Mrs. North episode
would find Pam leading Jerry on what seemed to be a wild goose chase as
they tracked down criminals. Pam always ended up being right and leading
police to the criminals. The theme song for the show was The Way You
Look Tonight. Sponsors included Woodbury soap, Jergens lotion and Halo
shampoo.
From This Day in History --
1929 - Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians' first New Year's Eve
broadcast from the Roosevelt Grill in New York City, which became an
annual event, was heard over the CBS network.
From Those Were The Days
1940 As a result of a dispute between the radio networks and ASCAP
(the American Society of Composers and Publishers), the radio industry
was prevented from playing any ASCAP licensed music. The ban lasted for
ten months. An ASCAP competitor, BMI (Broadcast Music Incorporated) made
giant strides, expanding to include 36,000 copyrights. Many radio
stations had to resort to playing public domain songs, such as marches
and operas, to keep their stations on the air. Even kids songs were
played over and over again until the ban was lifted. One of the most
popular songs to be played was Happy Birthday to You; which was
performed in many different languages just to get past the ban. The
original song is now, in fact, a copyrighted piece of music, though it
wasn't at the time.
1947 Roy Rogers, 'the King of the Cowboys', and Dale Evans were
hitched in marriage. They rode off into that sunset together for over
fifty years.
1/1
1923 The very first radio broadcast of the Rose Bowl was beamed in Los
Angeles over KHJ.
1925 Lucrezia Bori and John McCormack of the famous Metropolitan Opera
in New York City made their singing debuts on radio this day. The
broadcast over WEAF encouraged others to sing on radio.
1927 The very first coast to coast network radio broadcast of the Rose
Bowl was made. Graham McNamee provided the play by play on NBC.
1930 The Cuckoo Hour, was heard for the first time on the NBC Blue
network.
1/2
1921 The first religious broadcast on radio was heard, as Dr. [removed] Van
Etten of Calvary Episcopal Church preached on KDKA radio in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.
1959 CBS dropped the curtain on four soap operas. Our Gal Sunday, This
is Nora Drake, Backstage Wife and Road of Life all hit the road for good.
1/4
1928 NBC debuted one of radio's first variety shows. The Dodge Victory
Hour starred Will Rogers, Paul Whiteman and his orchestra and singer Al
Jolson. The cost to produce this one show was $67,600 ($852,320 in 2010
dollars).
1932 NBC Red presented The Carnation Contented Hour. The show
continued on network radio for 19 years as a showcase for top singers
and musicians.
1935 Bob Hope was first heard on network radio as part of The Intimate
Revue with Jane Froman, James Melton and the Al Goodman Orchestra.
1/5
1935 We proudly remind you that Phil Spitalny's All Girl Orchestra was
featured on CBS this day on the program, The Hour of Charm. (ed And
who can ever forget Evelyn and her magic violin?)
1940 The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) got its very first
demonstration of FM radio. The new medium, free of interference, static,
and noise in thunderstorms, was developed by Major [removed] Armstrong. The
first FM transmitter was put in operation in 1941.

My thanks to Tom Barnett for his wonderful retrospective of the tenors on the
Jack Benny show. My only question is: What happened to Larry Stevens after
he left his two year stint on the show?

Subject: Admitted Lurker
In a message dated 12/30/2012 12:01:11 [removed] Melanie Aultman writes:
"...perhaps the lurkers among us will step up to post some
interesting content."
I admit it! I am a lurker!! I enjoy reading the OTR email and never feel I
have enough to offer.
I do thank you for this wonderful forum. I know it is a lot of work and it
probably goes without enough thanks.
Today I shall offer a little bit so I can feel as if I am peeking from the
shadows of Lurkerville.
I was introduced to Old Time Radio in the 1960's when I was about 6, I
used to walk, or bike, by myself to visit my Grandparents. Often playing on
their old wooden radio were re-runs of famous OTR shows.
I would sit in the middle of the room for hours listening to Fibber &
Molly, The Shadow, The Lone Ranger, Suspense and the Green Hornet. This
became
a weekly event I really looked forward to. None of my friends seemed to
know of this Old-time world. (Few seem to know anything about it today.)
I never stopped listening to OTR thanks to Cassette tapes, reel-to-reels,
33 1/3 RPM's and now MP3's or CD's.
Something wonderful: My daughter is only 8. Finding my Old Wooden radio
that plays cassettes and my giant collection of OTR tapes, she has developed
her own interest and has her favorite shows. Topping the list: The Great
Gildersleeve. Hearing an 8 year old girl howl "Leeeerooooyyyyy!" is hilarious.
I often wonder if it is possible that an OTR gene was passed on to her.
We were watching an animated Holiday film (one of those Rankin Bass flicks)
the other day and the character of the Whale had a very familiar voice. My
daughter blurts out: "Hey, Daddy! It's Gildy!" There are those of you out
there, I know, who will understand the warmth of pride I felt at that
moment.
For the holidays we entertained at a local Senior home (I'm a
musician/recording artist). Part of our visit involved some social activity
with the
residents What a surprise it was when they found out my daughter knew so much
about the radio shows from their own youth. They could have talked with her
for hours and hours. It really warmed my heart. These old shows bridged
the gap between generations and everyone couldn't wait to talk about their
own favorite shows. It was like an OTR convention!
So, my sharing isn't so much about history or trivia. It's about
appreciation.
I appreciate these old shows, I appreciate this forum and I appreciate
those who share this love for OTR.
Thanks to all.
Happy New Year!
