Subject: Re: Highly recommended

Bobb Lynes just posted

Hi, folks,
Whew! How many more unsolicited praises of Jug's book are we going to have
to endure?

The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned.

Seriously, it is a GREAT memoir (well worth the high price he's charging).

A mere pittance.

Which reminds me, I've still got copies of Frank Bresee & my self-published
book "Radio's Golden Years" for sale at $20 each (autographed, postpaid).

Yeah! but Mine has more pages. :)

Seriously folks, one good turn deserves another. I have a copy of Bobb's
book, and it's quite fascinating. What he and Frank Bresee did was devote
each page to a famous radio show. I think the book is probably 8X10 to be
able to adequately accommodate all of Bobb's great artistic lifelike
drawings of the stars featured on each show, and then Bresee added captions
and pertinent data about the shows that Bobb then inked in. It must have
been a massive undertaking. I recommend it highly. And if you have a
particular favorite program, you could easily remove that page from the
book, and frame it.

I saw only one problem with the book. When I got to the page featuring the
Archie Andrews show. There was a large picture of both Hastings (Archie) and
Gloria Mann (Veronica), and a slightly smaller picture featuring the
countenance of Cameron Andrews. and the legend [removed] he played "Jughead".
Then, down in the lower corner, a brief mention of me, who "also" played the
part. (For those in the know, Cameron played the part briefly when it was
first aired as a 15 minute show on WOR). I got the role when NBC created a
half hour Saturday Network show, and did it for 10 years. Hummmph!

But I must tell you what a great guy Bobb Lynes is. When I confronted him
about it, and threatened to hire a hit man, he passed the buck, and blamed
Frank Bresee. (I couldn't afford two hits). Besides, my now best friend Bobb
Lynes when to great pains and redid the artwork for that page, and although
my face now isn't quite as big as Hastings, I am now content. He made a
larger copy of that page, and it now hangs proudly on my wall.

As an Artist, I know good stuff when I see it. The Drawings are great.

Subject: Information Please recordings

David asked: I read that Information Please lasted into the 1950s, but have
only
seen recording of the show from 1938-1944. Are the post 1945 shows
available? Would love to listen to them if I can find them!

Best of luck. Beginning with the broadcasts of February 1945, the program
was heard on a later time slot on the East Coast, than the West. Before
this, the program was heard on a late time slot on the East so that it could
be heard at the very same time (three hours difference) on the West Coast,
thus the program was heard coast-to-coast. But as of February 12, 1945, the
Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, inc. (also known as Mobil Oil) began sponsoring
the series and honoring a contract option, they ceased paying for the fees
involved in having the recordings transcribed. This practice was also
applied with the sponsors following Mobil.

So after episode 338, broadcast February 26, 1945, barely any episodes exist
in recorded form. About three or four recordings exist from episode #339 to
episode #510.

Funny thing is that the Mutual broadcasts labeled episodes #475 to #510,
were recorded for later playback on the air in a syndication form, so I
would think those exist somewhere but after all these decades, no one has
yet found them or made them available for collectors. Finding any
INFORMATION PLEASE broadcasts after February 1945 other than the three or
four already circulating is like a needle in a haystack.

The NightMARE Players, a division of the Milwaukee Area Radio Enthusiasts will
be re-creating an episode of "Broadway Is My Beat" on Sunday the 19th of
September. Within the the script a character named Randy Quantrio is reading a
letter upside down, Danny Clover says, "You read upside down, Mr. Quantrio?"
Quantrio replies, "I've lived in Baltimore." Does anyone reading this know
what that line means? I am totally baffled and so is the rest of the cast. It
is my line and it would be nice to know exactly what that line means. Thanks.

Subject: Jackson Beck on WHEN RADIO WAS

WHEN RADIO WAS will air a week-long tribute to the late Jackson Beck the
week of September 13-17. Included are episodes of THE CBS RADIO WORKSHOP
(with Everett Sloane and Jackson Beck in Robert Heinlein's "The Green Hills
of Earth"), THE MILTON BERLE SHOW, INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES, THE ADVENTURES
OF SUPERMAN, PHILO VANCE, BOSTON BLACKIE and THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM.

Of special interest is an episode of BROWNSTONE THEATRE in which Jackson
Beck stars in "The Prisoner of Zenda." Jackson plays the duo roles of the
prince and his lookalike British cousin, and delivers an incredible Ronald
Colman-like performance. If you don't have access to WHEN RADIO WAS from a
local station, you can listen to it daily at [removed].

Regrettably, this week brings to an end my six-year run as scriptwriter of
WHEN RADIO WAS, but at least I was able to go out with this week-long
tribute to my late friend ... who was also one of the most frequent guests
at the annual FRIENDS OF OLD-TIME RADIO convention. --Anthony Tollin

Subject: Crime Letter From Dan Dodge - Good News!

Several months ago, Jack French announced a recent discovery of a clip of a
previously unavailable detective program called Crime Letter From Dan Dodge
starring Myron McCormick and Shirley Eggleston. The short lived Mutual
series, which aired Oct 1952 to February 1953, appeared to be very
reminiscent of The Adventures of Sam Spade in what could be heard in the
clip. The complete show did not seem to exist as the original transcription
discs that were owned by Shirley Eggleston were missing.

Through initial sleuthing by Jack French and then with my own involvement
we were able to find those missing discs and I was able to transcribe them.
The quality of the discs were not great, but now two (not one) episodes do
exist.

Thanks to the good grace of Shirley Eggleston Haner I was able to make
these copies available to the otr community. I have initially placed two
slightly cleaned up copies in mp3 format on my web site at
[removed].

I am willing to provide unedited raw copies on CD in .wav format for those
who would rather have the direct from disc unedited versions. I would ask
that you email me first to work out the details. My time is limited and I
will work with you as best as I can.

Additionally, Crime Letter From Dan Dodge will be performed at the Friends
of Old Time Radio Convention this October for those attending. The radio
play is being directed by Don Ramlow and I Shirley will portray her
original character in the series.
