A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Smooth moves

Every time I hear the name of one of the latest contenders for political
nomination for president, I can't help thinking back to my youth and I hear
Uncle Bill of Let's Pretend clearly saying of a popular breakfast food
brand: "It's way up in flavah ... it's way down in cost ... it's paw-len-ty
smooth!" Does anybody else hear that? I'm certainly not endorsing the
candidate, only observing what pops into my mind every time I hear the man's
name! For me, he's given new meaning to "free advertising."

Subject: the eternal light

I discovered last September that The Eternal Light is once again in
circulation. This is a show concerning Jewish history and other Jewish
subjects. I used to listen to it on KFI in the 60s and was glad to find
it. I got my set from
www. theradiolady .com for $100 for 739 shows on 30 disks. There were 25
per disk on 29 disks and 14 on disk 30. Each show was approximately 25
MB.
WWW. otrcat .com
has 739 shows on 15 disks for $75, but I suspect the overall sound
quality might not be as good because of the smaller size. I now have
multiple myeloma (a kind of bone marrow cancer now in remission) and lost
my job and have not been able to get my stem cell transplant for other
health reasons. I have been listening extensively to these shows during
the past few weeks and they are an incredible treasure trove of OTR
actors and some real surprises including Robert Silverberg as the writer
on one show, although whether it is the SF Silverberg I don't know.
However, any blind listeners who know the new York stable of actors will
not be surprised that Alexander Scourby, Norman Rose, Guy Sorrell, Larry
Robinson, Leon Janney, Ralph Bell and others have lots of titles. There
are shows from Chicago with Ken Nordeen as narrator and actor and Even
Joan Crawford shows up at least once in the shows done in Hollywood. Some
of the stories are heartbreaking and since it is a religious show it is
over all serious but there are also Yiddish tales that use humor to make
points. There are repeats, but the show is so good that it is worthwhile
to have as much of it as possible. I have just found out that the show
ran until the 80s so there are a lot of shows still out there that I have
not heard. My time has been, and yours will be, well spent listening to
these shows. If anybody knows where I can get more can you contact me off
list? Kurt

Unquote.

ARTHUR HULL HAYES was president of CBS Radio from 1955
until his retirement in [removed] He passed away 14 April 1986. at age 81.
Clearly the successful program was YTJD, but starring Bob Bailey, not [removed]
General
consensus is the weekly 15-minute serials (some longer) produced some
of the best YTJD and perhaps some of the best dramatic radio of the 50s--and
there was a lot of good radio then when you think about it.

When I saw this
article, I thought about the other auditions made for CBS at this [removed] Most
were two-parters to help give a feel of what the program continuity would be
[removed] Moyles' audition of Rocky Jordan leads me to think it would have made
a fine weekly series--just enough "cliffhanger" to keep you [removed] Then
again, I Cover the Waterfront based on the book by Max Miller starred Larry
Thor and was very well-done, with the audition script dramatized by (CBS sound
man) Tom Hanley and old pro Gil Doud. I only can find one episode of Captain
Courage starring Ted de Corsia, but it was written and directed by Antony
Ellis and Bill Conrad. It had very high production values which may have
limited its audition to only one [removed] William N.
 Robeson was, I
believe, involved in the production of all [removed] No programs I've heard
had any significant weaknesses, so it was a tough competition to select the
right program, which I believe we all think CBS did with YTJD.

What I DON"T
have is a copy of "Girl From Paradise"B Goldin lists it with an audition date
of 5 Sept [removed] The plot is simple--a girl from Manhattan inherits a ranch
in Colorado and distrusts the foreman. He lists no starring character or
[removed] I assume the "from Paradise" part may indicate her roots in
Pennsylvania, and the plot is very similar to some of the Zane Grey novels
("The Light of Western Starts" comes to mind) but that's all I know about this
series.

Another series Goldin lists is two auditions of "The Private Practice
of Dr. Dana" starring Stacy Harris probably as Dr. Steve Dana and Virginia
Gregg as Dr. Carol Tracey, written by Robert [removed] Goldin states "possibly an
audition" without dates, and they time
at about 15 mins each, so I will
assume these are the two episodes from this 5-a-week audition.

I know nothing
about Blues in the Night. and I've not found any listing for it. Possibly a
jazz-oriented music show?B [removed] Perhaps the audition did not survive, or
is in the hands of a private collector?

I'd like to get copies ofB "[removed]"
"...Dr. Dana" and "Blues in the Night" if anybody has [removed] I'll take any
