I like Wheatena, too, but what does it have to do with Popeye?

Because as his radio announcer said (wish there were more shows extant!) -

"Wheatena's diet - he asks you to try it!"

Equally intersting is Weston's constantly changing
relationship with Lamont Cranston.

At times, he seems a very unwelcome thorn in Weston's
side, prying into cases the Commissioner clearly wants
him to avoid, and at other times, I think Weston
actually solicits Lamont (and Margo) to assist.

All this talk of Wheatena and Ralston, my childhood scourge, my childhood
breakfast nemesis. I would be forced to eat it as often as possible while

my mother listened to shows like "Young Dr. Malone". (Was it Sandy Becker
who starred in that show?)

"Gary, it's good for you. You will eat it, whether you like it or not!"

50 years later, I still recoil from these childhood memories.

But today I voluntarily eat Wheatena 2-3 times a week. My family makes
fun of me (they don't like the aroma).

Most importantly, since I am very, very fortunate in that both of my
parents are still with me- - I have not (and never will) tell them that I
eat it today.
Wouldn't give them the satisfaction.

I do like Cream of Wheat. What's the difference between that and Grits?

You're right, and I realize I may get corrected, and rightly so, but
it
was Commissioner Weston, not Lt. Weston on "The Shadow". It still
seems to me that, depending on which Weston was represented on the
program and when the programs were broadcast, that the type character
he was seemed to change. Starting from being cantankerous and a bit
arrogant to more confident and helpful in the latter incarnations. Was this
due to the way the role was written, the interpretation of the character by
a different actor who portrayed him or a bit of both?

Another OTR Fan,

Kenneth Clarke

In response to A. Joseph Ross' question, Wheatena was Popeye's radio
sponsor in the mid-1930s. He's gobble down several bowls instead of
spinach whenever he got into a fix.

Subject: Announcing Captain Midnight

Jim Widner, commenting upon my observation that Don Gordon was the
announcer hawking the Cold Ovaltine Shake-Up Mug, observed,

I thought that Don Gordon was the Chicago announcer for the Skelly
version of Captain Midnight. It was my understanding that Pierre Andre,
the spokesperson for Ovaltine during its Little Orphan Annie days
continued in that role as Captain Midnight began is sponsor relationship
with Ovaltine?

That was a slight mental glitch. I didn't mean to say "Don Gordon"; I
meant "Tom Moore." Pierre Andre announced many of the Ovaltine sponsored
Captain Midnight shows, but not all. In one of the existing recordings,
an episode of "Jewels of the Queen of Sheba," at the close of the show,
the announcer identified himself as Tom Moore. Although Pierre Andre was
the announcer of record for Captain Midnight, he certainly wasn't the
only one in that role. (Kinda like saying "Paul Barnes" when you meant
"Bill Bouchey," or vice versa.)
