In regard to the subject of attribution and oral history, I agree that it is
always desirable to have a paper trail when doing research. And while oral
history can have it's drawbacks, such as faulty memories, many times it's best
evidence. In the case of the debate as to The Shadow being the host of Love
Story Magazine Hour radio series, I thought Anthony Tollin's accounting of the
memories of Walter Gibson, John Nanovic, Richard Wormser, and Edith Meiser ,
which was backed up by the 1931 Radio Guide article, and ads in Love Story
magazine, to be compelling and authoritative enough. Especially Edith
Meiser's, who wrote for the series. As a script writer, she most certainly
would have known whether or not The Shadow was the host. Whether or not The
Shadow continued as a host for the entire season may be in doubt, but I think
there is little question the character was used for some period of time.
Detailing this information in a book would not only be desirable, but germane
to the subject at hand.

I agree that a paper trail should always used to back up one's memories, but
that is not always possible. Not every detail regarding every subject is
written down in documented form; certainly not one's memories, unless that
person writes a book, and even then that should be fact checked whenever one
can. However, dismissing memories solely because the paper trail may not exist
(to either confirm or contradict) is something with which I can't agree. If we
are to routinely dismiss oral history as a viable form of scholarship, are we
then forced to discount Leonard Maltin's The Great American Broadcast, which
is a book which relies entirely on oral history? Or the work of historians
like Studs Terkel? I would hope not. Figuratively speaking, people's memories
often ARE the only "paper trail." If they weren't, we'd have to rewrite darn
near every history book ever written.

While discussing the difference between fact and assumption, Martin Grams
wrote, "Professional jealousy and nit-picking isn't beneficial to the hobby,
nor does it provide anything of value to the hobby." Is he suggesting that Mr.
Tollin is jealous? I sure can't see that by the recent exchange on this
mailing list. It looks to me like he's trying to help Mr. Grams set the record
straight. As for nit-picking, well, if one wants ones work to be as accurate
as possible, I should think Grams would welcome any effort to make it so. We
all benefit from the help of others.

Grams' very impressive book on The Shadow is not without errors. As an
associate editor of Alter Ego magazine who has conducted over two hundred
interviews with former comics' creators, I was surprised when I read his claim
(on page 42 of his book) that the character of Lamont Cranston was first
introduced in the fourth Shadow novel, "The Red Menace." That didn't jibe with
my memory from Alter Ego #62's article on The Shadow's multiple personas where
writer Anthony Tollin stated that the Lamont Cranston identity was introduced
in the second novel "The Eyes of The Shadow." I went through my box of Shadow
paperbacks, and checked Tollin's statement against the 1969 Bantam reprint
version. The article in Alter Ego was correct and Martin Grams' book was
wrong. I realize errors can occur in any work, but this one was very glaring
to Shadow fans considering the importance of the Cranston identity in pulps
and on radio. I hope he will correct this if there is a second edition, and
not think I'm being nit-picky in pointing this out. I'm certainly no Shadow
expert, but I do love the character very much, and believe that it's important
to keep the character in the consciousness of our culture. In that respect, I
applaud everybody's efforts to further that cause.

Subject: Buxton and Owen

My good pal Jim Nixon claims it was the otherwise venerated Messrs. Buxton
and Owen who first perpetuated that myth that the Lone Ranger's first name
was "John." I'm willing to give Frank and Bill a pass. Yes, "The Big
Broadcast" is rife with errors. Yes, vague entries such as "This serial aired
on Mutual for about two years in the mid-1940s" might have been sufficient
for OTR fans in 1972, the year of its publication but woefully insufficient
in the mid-1990s when the "second edition" appeared courtesy of Scarecrow
Press.

However, B & O did invent the radio envyclopaedia. Other books like Dunning's
have come along and have superseded "The Big Broadcast" in both scope and
authority. Buxton and Owen laid the groundwork and foundation for future OTR
historians as did other earlier post-OTR era chroniclers like the late Jim
Harmon, the late Charlie Stumpf, and the late Irving Settel.

Whenever I play Monopoly (original version based on Atlantic City), the B&O
Railroad to me stands for "Buxton and Owen' and not "Baltimore and Ohio." So
before anybody else says "[removed]!" to "B & O" let's just remember how important
and iconic they are to this OTR hobby.

That's about the size of it!

Jim Nixon tells us that, according to Dave Holland, the Lone Ranger
error about "John Reid" comes from the 1972 book, "The Big
Broadcast," written by Frank Buxton and Bill Owen (Viking Press.)

Yes, that error is in the cited book, but that's not the first time
these two authors introduced us to "John Reid." Their earlier book,
"Radio's Golden Age" (Eastern Valley Press, 1966) contained that
identical entry.

For those of you who care about such things, these two books, six
years apart, are virtually identical in contents, despite the books'
two titles and different publishers. (Also the claim on the dust-
jacket of "Big Broadcast" that this was "a new, revised, and greatly
expanded edition of Radio's Golden Age")

A Message To All

I would like to clear up the History of The Lone Ranger once and
for all. I have been reading the various comments about Who, Were and What
the L R is all about. Most of it being guess work. No one seems to know the
true story.
In 1976, John Dunning wrote and published a Book titled "
Tune In Yesterday"
The Ultimate Encyclopedia of "Old Time Radio" ( I purchased my copy in
1976 and have used it ever since) The information about OTR is
unbelieveable. Complete, thorough and accurate. The Book is no longer in print, however
there are numerous used copies out there. Start with Amazon ( some are not
too costly either).
So if you would like the true, real and accurate story about The
Lone Ranger
check out the used book sellers and pick up a copy. Also you gain all that
Infro. about
the other OTR programs of that time

                                                             Good Reading
