Subject: Commercial Free AFRS recordings

In his paper on the history and his remembrances of Armed Forces Radio
Service during World War II, Edward M. Kirby (Col. -- USA -- Ret.) addressed
the reason commercials were stripped off those shows.

"Arrangements were then made with the commercial sponsors to re-broadcast
their programs to the troops overseas, commercials and all, since we had no
staff to make deletions. Clearances from the musical union and ASCAP were
granted without question.

"All went well until the Fall of Bataan and later, Corregidor. The battered
American heroes, still holding out, were forced to eat mule meat. Before
the commercial could be deleted, a program had reached our soldiers on the
Bataan peninsula , hoping for a word announcing their deliverance, but
instead, were told of the ease with which you could go to the family ice
box for some delicious cheese and cold drinks.

"Immediately all selected programs were "de-commercialized" It was also
obvious that entertainment programs designed for domestic listening, were
not always acceptable to our troops stationed overseas, many of whom had
just returned from fox-holes, where it was said, there were no atheists.
It was also obvious that a separate, full time staff had to come into being
to handle broadcasts to troops overseas."

I believe the full document is archived someone here on Charlie's site, but
I'm not sure how to find it.

Don't forget, if you are unable to travel to this week's Friends of Old Time
Radio convention in Newark, you can still hear all the panel sessions LIVE on
[removed] . Our tentative schedule is: (Eastern Time)
Thursday 11:30 AM - 3 PM
Friday 10 AM - 4:30 PM
Saturday 9 AM - 4:45 PM
Sunday 9:30 AM - 11 AM

Of course we will be going with the timing of the actual presentations, so we
might be on a little earlier and stay on a little longer. Even The Shadow
doesn't know.

If you ARE at FOTR, stop by and say hi to Leah and me. We'll be set up in
the back of the presentation room. If you're not careful we might even get
you to say something on the air! For bait, we have some candy for you.

Subject: "House of Mystery"

I'm looking for information about this series that
goes beyond the usual desktop resources. Hopefully
someone on this list will have some specialized
knowledge, or will know where to direct me to get
answers.

Here's what I know: "House of Mystery" began as a 15
minute weekday serial on Mutual in January 1945. In
September, it became a weekly half-hour program; first
on Saturdays at noon, then Sundays at 3pm (all times
Eastern). It ran in that format for a few years.
Olga Druce was the producer, General Foods the
sponsor.

According to Jim Harmon's "Great Radio Heroes," the
series was produced by the same company that did
"Adventures of Superman" - which presumably means
Robert Maxwell Associates. Unfortunately, I was
unable to determine Mr. Harmon's source for this
information. The only thing that might support it is
that DC did a "House of Mystery" comic book. But the
title wasn't introduced until 1951, and then as a
horror comic - nothing like the
"supernatural-explained" tales of the radio show.

I've read various articles about the show (as well as
about Ms. Druce) in "Sponsor," "Radio & TV Best" and
"Radio Mirror" magazines and some newspapers, and from
these it seems like it was owned either by General
Foods or its ad agency (Benton & Bowles, IIRC).

Along with "Superman," I've determined that Maxwell
Associates was responsible for producing "Hop
Harrigan," "Adventure Parade" and "Criminal Casebook."
The only one I can't confirm based on contemporary
resources is "House of Mystery." Does anyone know for
sure?

Thanks,
Michael

I wanted to quickly add a bit to what Dan Hughes wrote about the passing of
busy TV game show host Jack Narz (whose brother was also a famous TV game
show host, Tom Kennedy)...
Mr. Narz worked at a few radio stations in the Los Angeles area in the
late-1940s to [removed] was with the old KWIK-1490 in Burbank;
low-powered daytimer KIEV-870 in Glendale;
and KLAC-570 in Hollywood. He then went into local TV at KTTV-11 and KNXT-2
hosting afternoon movies and announcing the commercials, etc. Shortly
after, he announced for early network TV shows, including "Space Patrol"
and "Life With Elizabeth" starring Betty White; and then he began hosting TV
game shows.

David Hinckley of The New York Daily News gives the 2008 Friends of Old Time
Radio Convention a plug in today's issue.

He was working off an old press release, so some of the information he used
is now incorrect (Peg Lynch is no longer attending, for example) but once
again he's done a great job of capturing the spirit of the event.

A couple of questions regarding Edie Adams:

Wasn't she married to comedian Ernie Kovacs for a while? I believe
after he was killed in a car accident, she went on to marry again. And if
memory serves, didn't she once do commercials for Muriel cigars? I seem
to recall her singing "Hey big spender, spend a little dime on me" to the
tune
of "Hey, Big Spender" from "Sweet Charity". I could be wrong.

As always,
