Bob Cockrum asked: In his latest post, Derek Tague signs off with "Hi-ho,
Silver!",
which is what I thought I was hearing as I played beside the big speaker on
the Silvertone
console when I was a [removed] I was shocked to see the masked man waving goodbye
and
shouting, "Hi-yo, Silver, away!" So, to those who have seen the original
scripts,
yo-bro, what were Fran Striker's actual words?
Bob is correct, it is "Hi Yo, Silver."
In the earliest scripts, The Lone Ranger used "Hi Yi" (and nothing more, not
referring to Silver by name).
In many of the early scripts, he never signed off, just solved the crime and
the concluding scene
dealt with the weekly protagonists describing the resolution.
The earliest episode to have The Lone Ranger ride off with "Hi Yo, Silver!" is
episode nineteen.
This I just verified by consulting the first 451 scripts here at the house.
(Credit should also go to
Terry Salomonson, Mr. WXYZ, for helping with this chore.)

For Bob C. and others who may be [removed]
When I first knew Fred Foy I asked him what exactly say "Hi-Yo" or "Hi-Ho".
Fred chuckled and said he had been asked that question hundreds of times. The
answer, of course, was "Hi-Yo Silver". It was always said that way both on
radio and TV. If anyone needs further verification, I can show you several of
Fred's annual Christmas Cards that include those famous words.

Subject: Re: WaPo writer and the Hornet
So the WaPo reporter calls one of the two top Hornet experts on the planet
and tells him he's wrong about the radio show?
What a lazy slug. He/she obviously didn't even Google "Green Hornet wiki".
As Barbara Billingsley said in the movie Airplane, "Chump don' want no help,
chump don' get no help."
If it runs that way, I'm sure someone in the [removed] area will correct the error.
Sadly, this is pretty common "conventional wisdom."

I too was asked once about "The Green Hornet" beginning on TV. I told
them that "The Green
Hornet" was on TV from 1966-1967, but began on OTR. They said they remembered
seeing an
episode of the show "Batman" which ran in the mid sixties, which starred "The
Green Hornet" as
a character. (I, too, remember the episode in question. I said that "Green
Hornet" wasn't a spinoff
of the "Batman' series. As I recall, "Batman" was a spinoff from the OTR
"Superman" series.)
Admittedly, this can be quite confusing. Several episodes of the
"Superman" series starring
"Batman" are currently on the market now.
As always,
Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Joel Blumberg, RIP
It is with deep regret that I pass on the new of the untimely passing of Joel
Blumberg on December 17. He was 64. Joel became a familiar face that everyone
looked forward to meeting at the Mid Atlantic Nostalgia Convention. Besides
hosting the interviews on stage at MANC, Joel was also instrumental in
vintage movie releases on DVD for major film studios, wrote liner notes for
many DVDs, supplied audio commentary, did color commentary for NBA radio
broadcasts, and recently wrote a book on Lloyd Nolan for Bear Manor Media.
Joel was instrumental in making DVD companies feature old time radio shows as
extras on DVDs.
Joel, with his contacts in Hollywood, knew almost everybody. As a big favor,
he was instrumental in convincing celebrities to attend our event, including
Celeste Holm, James Best and Marsha Hunt. At his request, he wanted to do the
interviews on stage with the same celebrities he helped us get for the show,
and this started the policy of allowing anyone who makes similar arrangements
have first dibs. And that policy has been in effect for the past few years
and why at least three people every weekend has been doing the interviews.
Joel will be missed and we'll make sure there is page in this coming year's
program guide "In Memory" of Joel. If you want to send
a condolences card to his wife, the address is below:

Oh, and how about this. Last week, we got a call on our answer
machine from an assistant of Norman Corwin. He called to get the
phone number of Arthur Anderson so that Mr. Corwin could call Arthur
and thank him for the copy of the recreation of his play that Arthur
had sent to him. The reason he called us is that our name and phone
number are on the back of the DVD case.
I knew that Ellen had Arthur's phone number handy and I had to go out
that morning, so I asked Ellen to return the call. She told me later
that when she called the number, Mr. Corwin himself answered the
phone. And Ellen and he had a nice conversation. Ellen told him how
much she enjoyed the story.
I asked Ellen if she happened to mention my name and the fact that
I've been a fan of his writings for many years. Ellen said "no".
