Just a correction to Jerry's listing of upcoming science fiction
episodes on "The Glowing Dial."
He listed:

Beyond Tomorrow - "Incident At Switchpath"
originally aired April 11, 1950 on CBS
Starring: Michael O'Day, Bret Morrison, John Campbell Jr.(editor of
Astounding Magazine) as your host.

John Campbell Jr. was listed as a technical consultant for this series,
which may or may not have actually aired. He was not the host as listed
above.

True, all true.

However, it did not stop ABC from distributing publicity shots for
this series with Lassie, front paws on a script on a chair and
emoting her lines (well actually "his" since Lassie was always
portrayed by a male dog) on cue into an ABC microphone. I'm sure this
photo fooled not only the juvenile listeners, but many adults who
were conditioned by the Lassie movies to believe this wonder dog
would have no trouble following a script.

Subject: Slim pickins'

Recently there was a mention in a post on this digest extolling the virtues
of a publisher of predominantly old time radio texts that, if I'm
remembering correctly, intimated it was now the "most productive" of that
breed of books. That may be true. I don't know how many works various
companies have produced nor is it my intent to unleash a war of words to
champion a producer at the expense of another. I think we're all in this
together, and I'm grateful for the contributions being made by all, no
matter who's doing the publishing. Everybody's efforts benefit us all.

Out of curiosity, I checked the website today of the publisher that has
released many of my books, McFarland, to see what is currently on hand. Not
including out-of-print titles dating back across 30 years in the business
(which that firm is celebrating this week, incidentally), there are 97
in-print radio-related titles currently described.

As an old adage puts it, "That may not be a record, but it sure is way above
the average." And aren't we fortunate to be the beneficiaries of so much?
If you're old enough, you may recall the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s when the
pickins' were positively slim.

Subject: And on the 7th day, Trendle rested

In Joe Mackey's dates today, we learn that

Sgt. Preston was created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, who
also created The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet.

Well, first of all, it's good to see Fran Striker get some credit on
these three series; certainly Trendle never recognized anyone at WXYZ
for any worthwhile contributions. The real low-down on Trendle and
his down-trodden minions is best learned by reading Dick Osgood's
1986 book, "WYXIE Wonderland." It's long out of print and most used
book dealers on the Internet want a hundred bucks or more for a copy.
But there are 156 copies floating around in libraries throughout the
country so you can easily obtain it through the InterLibrary System,
as I did last week.

Basically, Trendle's main contribution to Sgt. Preston's origin was
to yell at his staff, "I want a new show about a dog." One of the
station's writers, Tom Dougall, actually created the series. His
father had worked in Canada, admired the Mounties in the writings of
Robert Service, and passed this on to Tom. Dougall came up with the
Mounted Policeman and his dog, which Tom named "King of the Huskies."
Tom wrote most of the early scripts before Striker started doing a few.

When you get time, dip into Osgood's book and see how little Trendle
participated in the creation of The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet.
But of course, Trendle owned the copyright to all three shows so when
the real money came in from these characters (movies, books,
television and hundreds of marketing items) all the profits went into
Trendle's coffers while the actual creators (including Striker) never
made a nickel above their basic WXYZ salary.

Subject: Requiem For Radio by Beaumont

Just came across a copy of an article titled "REQUIEM FOR RADIO" by Charles
Beaumont. It's his perspective towards the good ol' days of radio, fond
recollections of writing to the network as a kid, etc. He has a couple
factual errors but overall it's an enjoyable read.

This appears to have been printed in an issue of PLAYBOY but no reference to
the specific issue. Anyone know what issue (month and date) this appeared in?

Subject: Tonto's Birth Certificate

Paging a Digester in or near Crawford County, [removed]

Let's nail down the birth date of the actor who played "Tonto" on The
Lone Ranger, Sgt. Preston's Mountie supervisor on Challenge of the
Yukon and "Dan Reid" on The Green Hornet.

We all know him as John Todd but that was his professional name; he
was born Fred McCarthy in Crossingville, PA, probably on August 14 or
15th in 1877, maybe 1876. But nobody knows for sure; not even his
surviving family. He is buried there (having died in Detroit on July
14, 1957) in the family plot with his parents, Dennis and Sarah, and
siblings, Winnie, Eva, and Leo. Today you can see the magnificent
family marker on their graves.

The Radio Hall of Fame web site lists Todd as being born in England;
other sources claim New England. But most of his relatives are
convinced he was born in the same town in which he was eventually
buried. In a 1956 interview with the Detroit Times on July 5, 1956,
Todd said he would be 80 on his next birthday in August. But did he
say that with a twinkle in his eye? Was he actually [removed] younger?

Anyway, it would be a real service to the OTR community to get this
straightened out once and for all. I'm working on this with Todd's
distant niece, Peggy Horan, and we both hope someone can give us a
hand by finding the birth certificate in the county courthouse.
