Subject: Regarding Hal Stone
After reading Charlie's diegest entry on Hal Stone, I feel that I too have
lost someone, yet my only exposure to Hal was his professional and
to-the-point comments in the Digest.
I am sure that if the man behind the comments was anything like the comments
he made, he would have been an outstanding friend to anyone who knew him
personally.
My condolences to his family, friends and the OTR community.
John C. Abbott

What terrible news. Hard to take in. Hal was such a vital person and I'll
miss him a lot and his lively writing style. Is there an address where we
can send condolences?

I am sorry to hear Hal past away. I recall Hal answering a question to one
of my OTR Digest post. I felt that was very kind of him to send me a personal
e-mail regarding my question and he was quite pleased to answer my question.
I felt great to know that I came that close to a radio star. I felt a feeling
of close attachment to radio past I never had the opportunity to know,
because I wasn't born then. The feeling I got that day was like a 12 year old kid
that was very excited to receive a fan club letter. I'll never forget that.
Thanks Hal!

Subject: Hal Stone
Not more than a week ago, I remember seeing a post from Hal on the
OTR Digest mentioning that he was going in for a little surgery and
that he'd be back in no time. Well, unfortunately this was not to be.
My wife Melinda had a guide dog when I was chairing SPERDVAC
conventions and whenever we would go out to relieve her dog, Hal
would be out early in the morning walking. He never went by without
stopping to pet Davina and to say hello.
He was a very kind man and will be missed for so many reasons.
Our condolences go out to Dorothy and to his family.

Subject: Re: Olan Soule
This is far out but wonder how Olan Soule would have done as Batman in the
prime time Batman series. It would have been even more comedic in the role
with Soule instead of Adam West. I remember him as Barney's choir director
on Andy Griffith Show. Soule just didn't look like a superhero to me.
Not until today did I know he has 203 acting credits at

character actors on TV shows were old time radio veterans.

Subject: My last correspondence with Hal
Hal's last note here discussed his first name, and how he would have been
pleased with a "manly" name like Biff, Rocky, or Tim.
I sent him this note:
- ----------
Rocky, fine.
But Biff brings to mind a golden-haired pretty-boy surfer. Or George
Carlin's sportscaster, Biff Barf.
And Tim? All I can think of is that [removed] Boyle spoof that goes,
"Woof Woof!"
"What, Lassie? Timmie fell in the well?"
"Woof Woof"
"And he broke his leg?"
"Woof Woof"
"You're right, Lassie! Let's get the rope and pull him out!"
---Dan
[removed] Break a leg, buddy.
- ----------
And he sent me this note back:
"You forgot my favorite cartoon strip when I was growing up.
"Tim Tyler's Luck". He was always running around in the jungle rescuing
half naked big breasted women whose blouses were always torn to shreds
by the thorny vegetation.
And also in the comics, "BIFF!" was the word they inked in when some
smart ass (anyone we know) got punched in the jaw.
Hang loose
Hal"

Subject: More information regarding Hal Stone
Folks;
Dorothy (Hal's wife) asked me to let you know she appreciates all the good
wishes that have been pouring in. Hal's wishes were that no services of any
kind be held; in the sincere hope that this does not violate these wishes, I
hope anyone interested stops by Lois Culver's IRC chatroom this evening, 8:00
pm EST, 5:00 PST where we'll hold an informal celebration of Hal; bring your
own bottle and stories. For information, contact me (and forgive that I'll be
sending out a form letter with instructions, it's understandably a bit busy
around here today).
Instead of flowers, Dorothy has requested donations be made to the
American Heart Association's Research Fund - see:

Subject: clear channel, WLS "Stand By"
With all this talk about clear channel stations (small c's) I am reminded of
WLS and its impressive "Stand By!" radio weekly magazine published in the
1930s by the Prairie Farmer Station in Chicago.
Generally speaking, most of their covers I've seen were printed in Black ink
on Red and Black bleed background, each week with a different one of their
key personnel featured in a very fine, professional large BW photo taking
close to half a page.
But I recall in my collection seeing issues with the covers printed in
several other color combinations. One I remember for St. Patrick's week was
Green (surprise!) and Black (although I saw another green and black issue
which was NOT tied to either Paddy's Day or Christmas). I also remember
Yellow and Black and Orange and Black (just not the same as the Red, but
close). How about Blue? Fuchsia? Burnt Umber (salute to fine art issue?).
Just kidding.
Interesting thing is, in addition to coverage of their own people such as
George Goebel - later Gobel but already 'Lonesome George'), Patsy Montana,
and Pat Buttram, StandBy! carried items and upcoming news about,
appearances and chatty gossip on many other personalities carried by both CBS
and NBC. So apparently they aired both as well as their own substantial
originations, all heard throughout the Midwest. As one might imagine in the
1930s, FDR appeared with some regularity along with other news makers of that
decade.
Interesting stuff - vaguely reminiscent of the larger and more comprehensive
"Radio Guide" which sired "TV Guide" and a whole slew of other imitators.
I'm curious - Has anyone seen OTHER COLOR StandBy! covers? Many thanks.

Subject: Hal Stone
They say it's not what you take with you but what you leave behind. I
suspect postings about Hal Stone's charming and often hilarious personality
will flood the Digest for the next few days, revealing just how much fun he
was to hang around with. I chatted with him a number of times over the
phone, and he always closed the call with a dirty joke that he was never
ashamed of telling, but made sure his wife was not in the room at the time.
Whether it was the one evening he appeared on stage wearing the Jughead
crown when he played Jughead for an Archie Andrews recreation in Cincinnati,
or the day he sat on stage and commented, "oh, heck, he's dead now anyway so
I'll tell you how I really felt about that gorilla . . .", his attendance
and mannerisms at the old-time radio conventions certainly will be missed.
He wasn't a celebrity, he was family.
I am assuming someone will have a board for display at Cincinnati in April
so people who want to bring pictures can tack them to the board. I'll be
bringing one to share.
