This one is a little more cranky and silly in its assumptions than the last
few, but it does mention a love for Fred Allen and Jack Benny.

Someone posted me recently about the US Steel Hour, that it was on TV as
well as radio.

I was not aware of that. Could someone verify or enlighten me about
this? Was the US Steel Hour ever on TV?

I curious to know if William Schallert has any radio credits. He
*has* done animation and commercial voice-over work through the years
as well as around 200 screen (movie/TV) appearances.

I'm curious because he keeps showing up in late 50s-early 60s TV
programs that also feature a venerable who's who of the Radio Actor
talent pool. Surely with that many friends from the Radio business,
he must have had some early connections?

You may know him as the Drug Store Ad man in commercials or the
seller of Tribbles on vintage Star Trek, or Patty Duke's father, or
any number of western cowboys and salesmen through the years.

Subject: Scared by the sound effects

I was listening to and reading the commentary/notes accompanying the
first episode of the 1963 Doctor Who program today (The Unearthly
Child/100,000 [removed]) when the director commented on how the BBC forced
him to remove the 'cabbage head smashed with a heavy object' sound
from a fight scene between cavemen where one cuts off the head of the
other. The program was originally marketed to the 8-12 year olds at
5:15 on a Saturday afternoon.

So it's ok to use the sound effect in Lights Out in the 40s, but by
the 60s even the sound is too violent for the censors?

Any other examples of OTR sound effects banned in the visual medium?

Chris.

In the August 10 birthdays, the following listing was given:

		08-10-1915 - Jack Lester - Oklahoma - d. 9-18-2004
actor: Sky King "Sky King"; ""Whistlin' Jimmy Steele"

Is Jack Lester the radio Sky King or the TV Sky King? Were they the same
people? I'm certain someone in this group knows.

In an earlier digest, an OTR contributor (Andrew) brought up the fact that he
had purchased a pair of FIBBER McGEE & MOLLY shows from [removed] that
Marian Jordan wasn't present on either program.

According to John Dunning's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF OLD -TIME [removed] Jordan
(aka MOLLY) was off the show from November 15, 1937 through April 18, 1939.
The generic reason for her absence was fatigue, but Mr. Dunning's book
indicates the possibility of a nervous breakdown resulting from an
overabundance of alcohol. During this period, the show's name was eventually
changed to Fibber McGee & Company until Marian returned. So unless there are
specific dates on the cassette or CD Andrew purchased, there would be no way
of knowing whether Molly was present or not?

Most fans of the program automatically assume that the name of the show will
always be Fibber McGee & Molly.

The best part of the show was the interplay between
Fibber and Molly and without her in the shows it just
wasn't the same.

I seem to remember a few shows when Molly wasn't on,
However, I do remember hearing a series called "Fibber
McGee & Company" that - for obvious reasons - did not
include Molly. I might still have a copy of that show.
