Subject: This week in radio history 26 April to 2 May
From Those Were The Days
4/27
1921 Weather broadcasts were heard for the first time on radio when
WEW in St. Louis, MO aired weather news.
1931 NBC presented Lum and Abner for the first time.
1932 The Texaco fire chief, Ed Wynn, was heard on Texaco Star Theater
for the first time. Wynn, a popular vaudeville performer, demanded a
live audience to react to his humor if he was to make the switch to
radio. The network consented and Wynn became radio's first true superstar.
1937 The initial broadcast of Lorenzo Jones was heard over NBC.
4/28
1947 Studio One on CBS was first broadcast. The show was full of great
stars, but no sponsors. CBS dropped Studio One after a year on radio.
4/30
1945 "How would you like to be queen for a day!" That opening line,
delivered by host, Jack Bailey, was first heard on Mutual on this day.
The first Queen for a Day was Mrs. Evelyn Lane.
1945 Arthur Godfrey began his CBS morning show. His theme was Seems
Like Old Times. Arthur Godfrey Time ran until this very same day in
1972. Godfrey's show used live talent and not records. His popularity
with listeners was the major reason that several sponsors gave Godfrey
the freedom to ad lib their commercials and, from time to time, joke
about the products as well.
5/1
1931 Singer Kate Smith began her long and illustrious radio career
with CBS on this, her birthday. The 22 year old Smith started out with
no sponsors and a paycheck of just $10 a week ($[removed] in 2008 dollars)
for the nationally broadcast daily program. However, within 30 days,
her salary increased to a more respectable $1,500 a week ($21,[removed] in
2008 dollars).

Subject: Old time radio re-creation in Massachusetts
This Saturday, May 2, the 20th anniversary presentation of Radio Classics
Live will be held at Massasoit College in Brockton, Mass. I have gone to
about half of these live re-creations of old time radio broadcasts and
enjoyed every one. This year's show will feature radio/TV veterans Peg Lynch,
Arthur Anderson, and Rosemary Rice, plus a host of Boston radio/TV
celebrities including cowboy Rex Trailer. There will also be a look back at
20 years of Radio Classics Live. What's more, all proceeds go to the
Massasoit Radio/TV Scholarship Fund. Assuming they are not sold out, tickets
are $17, or $15 for seniors. For information, visit

I know someone who when they were growing up in the '30s and '40s, their
parents had a radio, but the kids never got a chance to listen to it because
they had so many chores to do. They explained that there was no time for the
radio. But now, they listen to OTR "Those Were the Days" and such. They are
making up for lost time. Listening now, they very much enjoy OTR. I'm glad
they got to hear it now, even if they didn't when the shows originally aired.

Subject: My view of the OTR & Nostalgia Convention this
past [removed]
All week I anxiously awaited the Cincinnati OTR & Nostalgia Convention. I
couldn't wait to see many OTR collections and buy "new" shows. I couldn't
wait to see what would go on at the convention. We (my husband, aunt, and I)
arrived in Cincinnati, OH on Thursday night. As we pulled into the hotel
parking lot, immediately, my husband saw a personalized license plate which
read "JBenny1." Oddly enought, they were from IL (just like us!) Who knew
we'd drive all the way there and be behind another OTR fan from IL? Well,
Friday morning after breakfast, we walked down the hall to where the
convention was held and I heard the familiar, nostalgic sounds of OTR coming
from the Dealer Room. I was overwhelmed with joy as we browsed through each
table. I bought the following OTR shows: The Aldrich Family, Archie
Andrews, A Date with Judy, Lights Out, Inner Sanctum, The Adventures of Bobby
Benson, My Favorite Husband, The Family Doctor, The Romance of Helen
Trent, and Our Miss Brooks. I bought 3 of the 11 Henry Aldrich movies that
were released between 1939 and 1944. I have Henry Aldrich Swings It, Henry
Aldrich Gets Glamour, and Henry Aldrich Plays Cupid. I plan on getting the
other Henry movies and others from the same dealer. (He did not have
everything with him, too much to carry). :) I also bought a book called "A
Pictoral History of Old Time Radio. I subscribed to the Nostalgia Digest and
met the person who is going to take Chuck Schaden's place after he retires.
I enjoy writing about nostalgia, so in the future, I'm going to write some
articles from the Nostalgia Digest. That should be a lot of fun!
I had the pleasure of meeting Dan Hughes and his family. His daughter Karen,
is a huge fan of Jack Benny. I told her I lived in Waukegan, IL for five
years, but Jack Benny wouldn't like what happened to his town now. Too much
crime and the like. Dan gave me a Vic and Sade to listen to on the way home
and I enjoyed it so much! :) It was so nice to be around people who have the
same interest as you and don't view you as someone from another planet.
In the afternoon, they had tryouts for radio episodes from Jack Benny,
Richard Diamond, The Saint, and Suspense. I tried out for Teller 1 in the
Suspense episode, "The Face is Familiar." I didn't get the part, but it was
fun trying out! I didn't know most of the other shows, so I didn't try out
for them. I ended up missing the shows that night and on Saturday. We had
to get back to IL, but I wish we could've stayed longer. Maybe next [removed]
My first time at the OTR & Nostalgia convention was a memorable one for sure.
Maybe I'll attend one of the larger conventions next year or so. This one
was smaller than I thought it would be. But it made it more intimate and
peaceful. Well, this is getting long enough, so I'll end it here. I'm off
to listen to one of my "new" OTR shows. :)

Just home (Champaign, IL) from Cincinnati, totally exhausted but a very
happy exhaustion. As always, it was the high point of our year.
Because Rosemary Rice had to cancel (due to a car accident), the role for
Mary Livingstone in the Jack Benny recreation was open, and my daughter
Karen got it. She will be flying high forever now.
I got parts in three of the shows. That meant three rehearsals. And
since I was also the auctioneer and raffle-prize MC, I had no break time
at all for the whole convention. NO, I'm not complaining! I loved every
minute, and I was still able to meet some wonderful people between all
the activities.
I created a Cincy message board last year, and Karen's annual
play-by-play of this year's convention is posted there. You can click on

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I just finish listening to Suspense radio episode for 1948 titled "Sorry,
Wrong Number." The announcer mention Agnes Moorehead had made an album
recording for Suspense. Is this true back in the 1940s and 1950s radio
listeners
could own personal album recordings of their favorite shows? I didn't grow
up during OTR radio period, so I am very clueless on this matter. I can
image that had to been an enjoyable item to have own. To listen in your own
home any time of the day. Can any of the readers recall owning any radio
shows on albums in the 1940s and 1950s? Do you still have any of the original
albums from that time period?
