Subject: Nigel Bruce & Herbert Marshall ques.
Hello all,
Kenneth Clarke wrote:
..Someone recently asked if Nigel Bruce (who
portrayed Dr. Watson on "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes") did any further
OTR roles. I remember him
portraying a character role in a movie with Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine
which might have been recreated on "Lux Radio Theatre".
Funny that Kenneth should bring up Hitchcock's "Suspicion", I just
purchased it and was thrilled to see Nigel Bruce being his bumbling yet
admirable self. It was adapted on radio twice, first on the "Lux" show in
May 1942, then "Lady Esther's Screen Guild" in January 1943 with none other
than Basil Rathbone playing the leading man (Cary Grant was the star of the
1941 film). Speaking of the Dr. Watson character, Nigel appeared in a
Sherlock Holmes parody on Bing Crosby's "Kraft Music Hall" in March of 1942
(Bing was [removed]'when the mere child's play of deduction of the night,
meets the gold of the day'...sorry, couldn't resist.).
It's interesting to see that Nigel's radio appearances apart from the New
Adventures of [removed] series were of him portraying the Watson character on
other shows. Generally they were few and far between, which is a shame in a
sense, as he was filled with talent and his style was like no other.
I have a question for the list about Herbert Marshall. I've done research to
find that Herbert was married four times, but there is no listing of the
names of his wives after actress Edna Best (which I believe was his first).
I'm trying to get in contact with someone who was relatively close to
Herbert during his life, to briefly speak with them about their perception
of him during his acting days. I need a point in the right direction, any
help would be greatly appreciated, I'll try to reciprocate in any way I

Have been surprised that no one mentioned the big reason that I begged my
folks to buy shredded wheat - the Straight Arrow cards that formed the
"shelves"
inside the weirdly-shaped Shredded Wheat box. I hated Shredded Wheat, but ate
it anyway to just collect those Straight Arrow cards.

To my knowledge, that's not the case. For one thing, there are only about
55 original TV DRAGNETs in circulation - I don't think any of them
correspond to radio episodes that are not available.
I believe the only TV Dragnets in circulation are from the late 60s revival,
since those are in
color. These are the ones which feature Harry Morgan as Officer Bill Gannon.
I don't believe
any of the 1950s TV Dragnets are in circulation currently, unfortunately.

I do recall that on TV, Gabby Hayes show
was sponsored by Quaker Puffed Wheat/Rice, because he had a ring premium
sporting a miniature of the cannon that the puffed cereal was supposed to
have been shot from.
Gabby Hayes had a large prop cannon, from which he shot Quaker Puffed Wheat
or Rice
directly at the camera in the final commercial of his daily show. His show
was produced by
Howdy Doody's production company and originated from the same studio, just
before Howdy
Doody. As a result, if you knew what to look for (as kids, we didn't), you
could see pieces of
Quaker Puffed Wheat or Rice around the Howdy Doody set, which the
broom-pushers
missed.
About 20 or so years ago, I wrote a skit for a Purim celebration (That's a
Jewish holiday at
which it is common to do a spoof play based loosely -- very loosely -- on the
Book of Esther)
called "Captain Mordechai of the Space Patrol," spoofing early-50s TV space
opera. The
sponsor was "Jewish Puffed Wheat and Jewish Puffed Rice, the only cereals
Shot From
Uzis." Someone made a mockup of a Quaker Oats box, with a Chasidic Jew in
place of the
Quaker.

He he, how the mind of a child works. I remember as a youngster when
hearing those commercials, I had visions of these people pouring wheat and
rice into these big cannons and shooting them off, while a bunch of other
people were some distance away holding big bags to catch all this puffed
wheat and rice.
Which is just what Gabby Hayes's daily commercial encouraged.

Around the turn of the 20th Century there was a health fad that
promoted "natural" foods, such as Kellogg's health place in MI, which
gave rise to corn flakes. Shredded Wheat was a by-product of this where
wheat was shaped into the familiar shape and baked. The company built a
huge factory, one of the first "modern" factories, near Niagara Falls
due to the abundant power source of the Falls (some of the water was
diverted to run many mills in the area, first with water later with
electricity made by the falling water). Niagara Falls, being a well
known natural monument, it was used with the advertisement and also on
the box. History Channel recently had a two hour program on the Falls
and its history and this was mentioned towards the end of the program.
Joe (who visited the Falls in the summer of 1984).

I'm not a radio scholar, just old enought to remember some of the programs.
What I remember is that after Rathbone left Sherlock Holmes they came up
with another mystery series for him in which he solved the mysteries as
himself. The gimmick was that people were always mistaking Basil for
Sherlock because of his identification with Holmes. naturally he always
solved the mystery.
Is my memory correct?

I recently purchased a collection of "Challange of the Yukon" broadcasts,
and all the ones I have were sponsered by Quaker Oats' 'Puffed' products. I
think I remember both eating and enjoying the stuff, and I believe that at
one time the boxes displayed a cartoonish figure of a cannon shooting the
puffed cereal grains out its mouth. The commercials included the line, "And
remember, fellas and girls, it never comes in bags." [[removed], I shouldn't have
put that in quotes, because that wasn't the precise wording]. The last time
I visited the store, I noticed that it only came in bags, and there are now,
of course, many new varieties that are coated in piles of sugar.

Just one small correction to Martin Grams post answering questions
concerning the Rathbone-Bruce movie/radio works.
"The Giant Rat of Sumatra" was *not* a short story by Doyle. Rather, it is
mentioned as one of those cases that "the world is not yet prepared" by
Watson in the Holmes short story "The Sussex Vampire." Pastiches of "The
Giant Rat of Sumatra" *have* been written by other authors. Arguably, this
is the most popular pastiche subject in the Holmesian literature.
However, Sumatra also was mentioned in other Holmes cases: "The Dying
Detective," "The Reigate Squire," and The Sign of Four (novel).

Subject: Happy New Year To You
A. Joseph Ross related the story of how Michael Dukakis's father in law
Harry Ellis Dickson of the Boston Symphony, conducted a group in singing
Michael Dukakis "Happy Birthday" at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston on
election day 1972. He said it was "a technical violation of the copyright"
This is not necessarily true. It is the venue where the public
performance takes place, not the performers, who are responsible for having
a public performance license. The Snopes article he cited mentions that
this song is now covered by ASCAP. If the hotel hosts any musical
performers, it is highly likely that they have an ASCAP license. If there
was broadcast coverage of this part of the celebration, then it also is
highly likely that all of the broadcasters likewise have ASCAP licenses.
[removed] (And since the Park Plaza
Hotel was the location from which Raymond Requello was broadcasting a CBS
dance band remote on the evening of Oct. 30, 1938, the hotel probably does
have a license. :-) )
The Snopes article also mentions the Harry Fox Agency. That is the
organization to contact if you wish to make a recording that includes the
song. Under the [removed] copyright law, once a Mechanical license is granted
to one person to allow a recording, it must be granted to ALL OTHERS who
apply. Of course, this license costs money (not much, by the way) and
royalties will have to be paid for each copy sold, but you too, can make
and sell recordings of this song!
Somebody also mentioned that some restaurants sing unknown birthday songs
to avoid this copyright problem. Back around 1950, probably as a result of
a run-in with this copyright, Fred Waring instituted a campaign to have a
different song substituted for birthdays and any other event. He offered
as a premium a 7-inch 78 RPM record of a birthday party for the Jolly Green
Giant where many different variations of this new song were demonstrated.
I still have my beat-up copy of this record, and Peter Keifer was kind
enough to send me a cassette of their pristine copy of the record and
photocopies of the envelope and enclosures. The campaign seems to have
been a failure, by the way. I have NEVER heard ANYBODY sing ANY of these
versions on this record!!! The little old ladies from Kentucky won out, so
it seems.
