Jack French said Oxford University Press initially charged $75 for Dunning's
encylopedia, "On The Air." Either that was _very_ initially, it was a special
leather-bound volume, or prices of books were really high wherever Jack lives.
I bought a copy at Borders back in May, 1998. The list price on the inside
flap of the dust cover was $55. Borders own price sticker (which is still on
the book) was $[removed] Which means I paid $[removed] with tax.
$75?!? Well!
Rick

I heartily agree with Jack French and his wife. Once I was told that
John
Dunning had an encyclopedia of OTR published, I had the local bookstore
reserve
one for me. That was about 10 years ago. I've never regretted this
purchase!
Also, I got a copy of Jack's book "Private Eyelashes" which is very
thorough
and interesting. I'd suggest it to anyone who wants to know the stories
behind
some of the best, and sometimes least, known of this sub genre of OTR
programs.
As always,
Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Cincinnati recap
As you can expect, the Cincinnati Convention was a good weekend, and a strong
reminder of how big our hobby is. I always feel a renewed interest in OTR
after this weekend. The enthusiasm that so many of the attendees have is
infectious.
As always, it was nice to see Bob Hastings, our regular guest. Rosemary Rice
was unable to make it due to a car accident, but hopefully she'll be back
next year. Our new guest, Eddie Carroll was very friendly, and his Jack
Benny impersonation is spot on. Seeing him perform in the recreations was a
real treat, and his attendance provided a real shot in the arm to the
convention.
The new hotel was great. Because they changed the name at the last minute, a
lot of folks seemed to have a tough time finding the place, but I think
everybody found it, at least from what I heard they did. It was clean and
the dealer and conference rooms had plenty of space for growth, should things
turn in that direction.
At the dinner banquet, Neal Ellis, Steven Jansen, Mary Ramlow and Eddie
Carroll were given awards thanking them for their service to our hobby, and
Charlie finally got to pick up his Parley Baer award from 2007!
I also was able to get a few old Old-Time Radio Digests from Bob Burnham ,
some mp3s from Neal Ellis (the only guy I've found doing good quality
original encodes of OTR shows), and some Nostalgia Digests from Steve
Darnell, who is a really great guy to talk to. I'm looking forward to
hearing him as he takes over TWTD in July.
Catching up with friends, and spending a weekend immersed in nostalgia is
always fun. Bob Burchett says that "maybe" we'll have another convention
next year, and while I know I saw some new faces, and feel attendance is up,
I know he'll have to crunch the numbers to find out for sure if he can do it.
Let's all hope that he can.
Rodney

Am I the only person who read this story about GE inventing a new disk storage format that can store 500 gigabytes of data in a standard size DVD disk and thought - how many shows could I fit on that?

Subject: Cincinnati, 13 years [removed]
The first time I took my family to the Cincinnati convention, my daughter
Karen was 11 years old. All the way there, she kept saying, "Can I be in
a show? Please?" I told her they probably didn't use children.
Lo and behold, when we got there, we found that the main show was going
to be a Lone Ranger episode starring Fred Foy, and the main character was
a 12-year-old girl. Don Ramlow held auditions, and at first he didn't
want Karen to read for the part. But enough people in the audience
persuaded (threatened) him, so he relented. She did a good job (she'd
been doing community theater since she was six or so), and she got the
role.
Here's where it all started: a video of Karen, age eleven, in the Lone
Ranger:
