The April issue of RADIO RECALL is enroute via email, in full color PDF, to
all subscribers who elected to take that version. The B & W hard copy version
will be passed out at the MWOTRC meeting on April 10th, and mailed out later
to those not present.

This issue leads off with a front page article on the American OTR shows that
were produced in [removed] with American scripts and Aussie casts.
Author John Abbott lists approximately fifty such series, including Gunsmoke,
Hop Harrigan, Portia Faces Life, Superman, etc.

Based on his surveys of young adults, Martin Grams, Jr., establishes that
almost nobody under age 25 knows who Jack Benny is, or John Wayne, Archie
Andrews, or Inner Sanctum either. But thanks to the movies, the youngsters
know who Batman is, and Iron Man, and (finally) the Lone Ranger, although a
few kids thought Johnny Depp played him in the recent film.

OTR historian Jim Widner has a major article on Main Street Sketches, which
began on radio in 1928 making it probably the earliest known successful radio
drama. It originated from WOR, then owned by the Bamburger Company. The series
would later star Don Carney, a name familiar to most of us for obvious
reasons.

The RADIO RECALL editor laments to disappearance of gratitude in the OTR
community where authors, researchers and historians are beset with many
unsolicited questions from strangers in cyber space, and where few, if any,
ever say "thanks." A sad [removed]

There are also three short articles on: the radio career of "Laugh In's" Gary
Owens, the famous "butter-fat" radio speech of Herbert Hoover, and the rise of
the Ted Weems Orchestra, whose version of "Heartaches" with Elmo Tanner
whistling, brought his orchestra to the top of the Hit Parade in 1947.

All this, plus letters to the editor, details on all upcoming OTR events, and
a plea for the return of Jack Armstrong, since the sale of his cereal
"Wheaties" has plummeted 78% in the past ten years.
