Does anyone know where I can find an episode date for "Captain
Midnight"? I'm trying to get a date for an episode which was titled "The
Silver Dagger Case". I've tried some of the collectors I know, as well as
some of the websites dedicated to old time radio, but have been unsuccessful.
If anyone has this information, or a suggestion where I can go to find
it, please let me know off line.

Thanks!

I've just started listening to "The Cinnamon Bear" for the first time, after
hearing about it for some time, and I must say it's a delight. I'm glad I
can listen to it.

Question: someone on another forum keeps insisting "Slim Pickens" the cowboy
is not played by Howard McNear, but by the actual character actor Slim
Pickens. However Slim's ImDB biography doesn't show him acting at that
point, not
until 1950, and in fact it indicates he was only starting his rodeo career
at that point in his life (1937). Still, this poster is adamant, insisting
there's no way it isn't him, but seems to be backing it up with nothing more
than an emphatic "It just is!" Can anyone clear this up for sure?

[ADMINISTRIVIA: "Someone" is dead wrong. I'll leave it to former members
of the Cinnamon Bear Brigade to supply detailed information (now that
Dennis Crow can no longer provide it), but just listen to the show; that is
_clearly_ McNear in the role. Compare to any of his Johnny Dollar
episodes, Gunsmoke, etc. and anyone with any kind of ear will recognize
McNear. Much like Parley Baer, McNear's voice is unmistakable no matter
what the role and what shading he uses. --cfs3]

Hi Everyone. I'm sure others have checked but I'll say what I found. An
article from Aug 1, 1929 in the San Mateo Times telling of how Ruby Keeler
entered the Lenox Hill's Hospital earlier in the week meaning it could have
been July 28 to July 31st that she was admitted. I read somewhere else that
she was released Aug 7th. Obviously, there could have been other times
between 1929 and 1939 (while they were still married) that she could have
gone in to the hospital. As Jolson is taking the time to profess his love, it
sounds like young love in a relationship to me and the fact that he wants her
to be known as Mrs Ruby Keeler Jolson (something that would be said early in
a marriage) I would give this date as an 85% chance of being correct for the
recording. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Doug

Subject: The Shadow Saluted in NJ This Saturday

The Springfield Library will host a presentation on the radio show "The Shadow" on December 3.

Details follow:

[removed]

It's by Henry Morse, otherwise known as the "Old Time Radio Man." Has anyone heard of him? Seems odd he operates out of NJ and we don't hear about him at Friends of Old Time Radio.

To my knowledge it was never broadcast but was released as a 78 RPM
record set in the late 40's. I had the records and may still have one
or two (I believe there were three). I must have nearly worn those
records out as when I first heard the program again about five years
ago, I recognized all of the dialog without having heard it in more
than fifty years.

Dear Folks,

Some time ago I came across the website of the UN audio library:

I tried to get in contact with someone who would be able to give me some
more info on the history of this library or/and on some productions in
particular, but unfortunately didn't receive any response to my Email -
maybe because
I'm from [removed]

Maybe someone from this list can help me? Is there anybody who knows
something about these radio dramas or - even better - is knowing someone who
was
involved with these productions in the first place? Any help will be
appreciated!

Thanks and best regards

Subject: Re: IS IT TRUE WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT (AL) JOLSON

The Jolson recording David Siegel described was not a "private (home)
recording". Although it was not meant to be released to the public, it was
recorded at the New York studios of Brunswick Records on August 2, 1929, So
although it is a personal message, it undoubtedly was heard by at least the
recording engineers, so therefore he was still performing to an "audience."
The metal parts and all but one pressing were supposedly destroyed, but that
pressing (or maybe another secretly saved one) ended up in the collection of
Columbia executive Robert Altschuler who had long-time access to the Columbia
vaults and pressing facilities. He sold it in the 1980s and it appeared on
the first of four LPs of phenominally rare records, "Personalities On
Parade", issued by John Newton in 1988 in a limited edition of 750 copies.

So, Dave's description of the public vs. private persona of Jolson is apt.
Although adorable in public and a fiend in private, this private recording
was really recorded in public.
