I've also gotten word that character actress Amzie Strickland has died. One
of her obits credits her with more than 3,000 radio shows.

I'm asking this question to get a feel for the future.
Do you think with the amount of "free" downloadable OTR on WWW is it
necessary for the "Bensman Radio Archive" at the Universitiy of Memphis to
stay in operation?
I've retired and will not be able to maintain the cassette library for much
longer. I have been doing this for over 37 years. I still have well over
5,000 hours of reel-to-reel that I will likely never get transferred to any
other media.
I would like to have the specific historic broadcast material that is not
available anywhere else preserved

Subject: Escape : "Bird of Paradise"
Last night we listened in bed to the "Bird of Paradise" episode of
Escape. Its about a man
searching for the island that is home to the elusive "Imperial Bird of
Paradise" so he can make a
fortune selling feathers. But when he does find the island, he finds a
native girl who is more
beautiful than the feathers! Its a great episode, well-produced with an
almost cinematic feel
and highly entertaining.

1944 - The Man Called X, starring Herbert Marshall, debuted on CBS.
7/12
1934 - The first appointments to the newly created Federal Communications
Commission were made. The governing body of the American broadcasting
industry was first served by seven men named as commissioners.
1946 - The Adventures of Sam Spade was heard on ABC for the first time.
7/14
1957 - Funnyman Stan Freberg debuted a new weekly comedy program on CBS
beginning this night. The Freberg show only lasted a short time and that
newfangled contraption, television, was blamed for the show's quick demise.

Amzie Strickland was heard in 50 episodes of THE SHADOW, including two
episodes when she filled in as "the lovely Margot Lane" during the latter
weeks of Grace Matthews pregnancy. Those fill-ins were the first two
broadcasts of the 1948-49 season, 09/12/48: "Murder at Dead Man's Inn" and
09/19/48: "Revenge Is <<139>> Murder!"
Amzie also performed in two SHADOW cast reunions I directed at the 1986 and
1994 SPERDVAC conventions. --Anthony Tollin

Amzie Strickland also appeared in several episodes of CBS police series
21ST PRECINCT:
08/04/1953 - Case Of The Sailor's Family
11/10/1953 - Case Of The Key
04/28/1954 - The Story
05/26/1954 - The Father
07/28/1954 - The DOA
04/19/1956 - The Poodle
The last episode was unusual in that while 21ST PRECINCT was a series
based in New York, two episodes were recorded in Los Angeles in April 1956
because the series star, James Gregory, had a film commitment that required
him to be in Hollywood.
Signing off for now,

I remember Curtis did a Benny show where they did a parody of The All
American, one of Tony Curtis's movies.
Must have been in the 50's.
I used to have it, and maybe still do. haha

I can provide a fairly reliable answer to the question of the size of the
Norman Luboff Choir. I can't be certain which program precisely we were
seeing on a vacation trip to Southern California when I was a kid and they
were in the cast. We always tried to have free tickets for radio programs,
and saw some good ones. The Choir consisted of no more than six or seven
people, but they stood within some sort of framed structure, which I assume
did magic with their voices.

One I know of is The Jack Benny Program, "The All American", from
11/8/53, where Jack spoofed the film he was in and he made a cameo
appearance of about 10 seconds.

Walden,
Do you have the mp3 set of Halls of Ivy episodes that I pulled
together in 2002? Some of the episodes had previously been considered lost,
but thanks to some original wire recordings I obtained from Milton Ferguson
I collected 89 radio episodes, the 1951 interview with Don Quinn, and some
TV episodes. Most are 32/22 mp3, although the ones that originated with me
are 48/22 I believe - with a range of audio quality from excellent down to
very "listenable." Also, I personally find the TV series to be just as
"radio-like" as the radio series - they used the same type of script. I did
some digital filtering to enhance quality, and I might still have the
original mp3 of many of the episodes that I worked with.
From my notes at that time:
Newly available radio episodes:
#34, Scandal / Professor Rousseau, 10/18/50, #40, The Honor Student,
11/29/50,
#55, His Father's Image / Football Player's Son, 3/14/51
#61, Note the Quote, 4/25/51, #62, Glory Golightly, 5/9/51,
#64, Cook's Night Out, 5/23/51, #73, Mrs. Why / Grandmother Enrolls,
10/24/51,
#74, Football Coach, 10/31/51, #76, The Halls Have Car Trouble, 11/14/51
New TV soundtracks:
#2, The Heart Of Passion, 10/26/54, #8, The Eleventh Commandment, 12/7/54,
#9, Boxing Versus Medicine / The Fighting Med Student, 12/14/54,
#18, Note the Quote, 2/15/55, #26, Scandal / Professor Rousseau, 4/12/55,
#27, Football Fix, 4/19/55, #28, F Canis Minor, 4/26/55,
#32, Honor Student, 5/24/55, #35, Maxwell's Comet, 6/24/55
