Subject: OTR Club Roll Call
Walden Hughes has called for an update on the OTR clubs in the [removed]
As an OTR editor, I exchange newsletters with most of them. The club in
Tucson, as well as the one in Louisville, don't publish any newsletter, but
both are alive and well as far as I know.
How Walden forgot to mention REPS in Seattle, WA I don't know but they are
certainly going strong. Nor did he mention the largest club of all, SPERDVAC
in Los Angeles. (I guess he figured we'd all know they were both still
active.)
Radio Collectors of America (RCA) in the Boston region is still in good
shape. Not sure what Illinois club Walden refers to, unless it's ORCATS, who
still exist, as far as I [removed] least their web site is current. However
the Chattanooga Club in TN was dissolved last [removed] malady as the
Colorado club: no new volunteers to keep the group running.
I only know of one OTR club in Ohio and that's Radio Listener's Lyceum in the
Cincinnati region. The Buffalo Club, which was recently re-named the Old Time
Radio & Nostalgia Club, is doing very well, as is the OTR club in Milwaukee,
WI. If there is another OTR club in NY, I guess Walden would be referring to
the Gotham Radio Players, who show up at most OTR conventions.
Last, and I hope not least, the Metro Washington OTR Club is still going
strong, celebrating our 31st anniversary this year. Half of our 140 members
are in the DC, MD and VA area while the remainder are scattered from Maine to
San Diego.
If I've failed to mention any existing club, I apologize in advance.

The Quincy, Massachusetts-based Radio Collectors of America OTR club still
exists, although we have seen our membership dwindle to 19.

Subject: This week in radio history 31 May to 6 June
5/31
1943 - A comic strip came to radio as "The Adventures of Archie
Andrews". It was heard on the NBC Blue network. Archie, Veronica and the
gang stayed on radio for about ten years, moving to Mutual Broadcasting
in January 1944, and then to NBC in June 1945. The radio sitcom was
based on Bob Montana's comic strip about Archie Andrews and his teen-age
pals.
1949 - A crowd of 35,000 people paid tribute to radio personality Mary
Margaret McBride at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, (one of the five
boroughs that make up New York City). McBride was celebrating her 15th
year in radio.
6/1
1936 The Lux Radio Theater moved from New York City to Hollywood.
Cecil B. DeMille, the program's host on the NBC Blue network, introduced
Clark Gable and Marlene Dietrich in The Legionnaire and the Lady.
1938 - The first issue of "Action Comics" was published. In its pages
was the world's first super hero, Superman. Jerry Siegel had a dream
about the baby, Moses, who was abandoned by his parents in order that
his life be saved. This dream prompted Siegel's creation of the "Man of
Steel". Artist Joe Shuster made the comic book hero come alive. The
first story, in this first issue, took place on the planet, Krypton,
where baby Kal-El was born. The infant was shot to Earth in a rocket
just before Krypton exploded.
6/2
1946 The Fabulous Dr. Tweedy was broadcast on NBC for the first time.
Frank Morgan starred as the absent minded Dr. Tweedy.
1937 CBS presented the first broadcast of Second Husband. The show
continued on the air until 1946.
6/3
1946 - Mutual Radio debuted "The Casebook of Gregory Hood". The show was
the summer replacement series for "Sherlock Holmes". The mystery series
became a regular weekly program in the fall of 1946.
6/4
1944 - "Leonidas Witherall" was first broadcast on the Mutual
Broadcasting System. Witherall was a detective who looked just like
William Shakespeare.
6/6
1938 - Stella Dallas was presented for the first time on the NBC Red
radio network. The serial was "the true to life story of mother love and
sacrifice." Stella continued to do this and so much more until 1955.

This new television show is starting on Monday, June 1. As most of you know,
it was based on Ray Bradbury's Zero Hour, appearing on X-1. Drill is still
the main evil character.

This Week's Classics & Curios Show:
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 171
RADIO WORLD PREMIER EPISODE OF THE CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY OF LOWER BASIN
STREET: GUEST SOLOIST DINAH SHORE
Here's the very first radio episode of the Chamber Music Society of
Lower Basin Street, broadcast on NBC Blue on Sunday afternoon, January
2, 1940. Guests are Arthur J. "Zutty" Singleton, jazz and percussionist
aficionado, and "Mademoiselle Diva" Dinah Shore as soloist.
"Professor" Zutty performs "I Know That You Know" and "Bugle Call Rag,"
while Dinah does "Rockin' Chair" and "There'll Be Some Changes Made."
Announcer Gene Hamilton assumes his stodgy commentator role as "Doctor"
Gino Hamilton and speaks briefly about the trouble with modern music
while alluding to his supercilious "book" on that subject with a
non-sensical and wonderfully funny German title, ending with the word
"Knackwurst."
Maestro Laval and his "Double Woodwind Quintet" contribute "Runnin'
Wild" after a deliciously long, long-haired introduction, and maestro
Levine and his "Mason Dixon Octet" perform the "austere classic" "Blue
Room" and "Muskrat Ramble" "with its subtle shadings and mutations."
"A Little Street in Singapore" and "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street
(*All the Little Birdies Go Tweet, Tweet, Tweet") round out a super
"World Premiere" show for "music lovers."
You may also enjoy previous Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street
episodes 109, 110, and 170 in my archives.
