Subject: Lux Radio Theatre and lost films
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if there are Lux shows for movies that no longer exist in
visual form. I would love to know if there are a few movies I could "watch"
in my head that could not watch on video.
Thanks,
Steve Donovan

It wasn't always 237 lbs either. I have an episode which lists his weight as
247 lbs, but with
the same fortune.

Subject: OTR Conventions
A couple things to note about conventions while having second thoughts on the
discussion:
1. Attending conventions is beneficial because you actually learn a lot about
the hobby. For example: I had an opportunity
to buy a Spider ring (from THE SPIDER) two weeks ago and I was told it was an
original and the price tag was $75. I took
one look at it and voted no on the purchase. Why? Because weeks prior at a
convention, someone had a presentation about
decoder badges and ring premiums (my main interest was the Jack Armstrong
ring) and it was instructed on the big screen
slide show how to tell the difference between the real deal and a knock-off.
That was worth its weight in gold.
2. Buying products at a convention from vendors is better than off the
internet. If I buy off the web, I'm buying blind.
Seriously, how many people bought something off the web and discovered it
wasn't as large as they thought when seeing
the picture, or wasn't the sound quality they hoped? I can preview and
examine materials before buying.
3. I can put a name on a face. A friend of mine sends e-mails that, half of
the time, seem cocky and insultive. But having
chatted with him at conventions, I find he is the exact opposite and it's
just the way he speaks. Everyone knows that an
e-mail can be read two different ways, so now I don't feel bad reading his
e-mails since I got to know him. And I can put
a face to the e-mails I get all the time from people I see once or twice a
year.
If you have ever considered going to a convention, try going to one this
year. You won't regret it.

Subject: "Luxify" + other OTR terms
Once recently, I was speaking about old movies with friend and fellow
Digest-er Steve Thompson. While mentioning a particular film -- I forgot
which one -- I asked him "Was that movie ever 'luxified?'" Steve knew
immediately what I meant but for the benefit of the novice OTR fan, "luxify"
would mean "to take a form of pre-existing entertainment, especially a motion
picture, and repackage such as a radio script to be presented on 'Lux Radio
Theatre,' 'Screen Directors' Playhouse,' and/or other such radio dramatic
anthology programmes."
"Luxify" seems like a perfectly good neologism for participants in the OTR
hobby. However, I refuse to believe that in the foregoing 45+ years of the
hobby that nobody else has ever deigned to use this term before.
Can anybody else out there in the ether think of other terms that have grown
out of the OTR collectors' hobby? Inspired by the short-form word "freak" as
in "What is that radio station's FREQUENCY?" I used to use the word "reec"
(homophonous with the word "reek") as a diminutive for "re-creation" but that
term just never caught on -- maybe this terminology just "reeked."
Not quite an OTR-inspired term, but there was a phraseology I used to employ
at FOTR planning committee meetings. Whenever somebody mentioned wanting to
invite an elderly OTR performer from the West Coast, I would sometimes
inquire "Is so-and-so 'viable and flyable?'" meaning is such celebrity
mentally cogent and healthy enough for a cross-country air trip.
We all know that the catch-phrase "coming on like Gangbusters" grew out of
OTR but I'm looking for terms that originated in the post-1962 hobby.
Students?
Inquiring from the ether,
Derek Tague

Shouldn't take more than an hour at the library. Please contact me off line.
