Help
Happy New Years to all of my friends in the OTR Digest! Hope 2009 is all you
wish it to be.
My wife surprised me for Christmas. after having more than a few Thomas radio
reproductions around the house she gave me am authentic old radio.
It is an old cathedral type with tubes and it still works. The name on the
plate is "Webber" but I am having difficulty finding anything about it on the
internet.
Can anyone help me?

Subject: Wonderful Life radio stage play
Somewhere along the way I have lost the middle, if not the end,
of this thread and am somewhat confused (nothing unusual there).
Are people saying these different stage plays in various cities
of a radio version of "It's a Wonderful Life" are a re-creation
of the Lux Radio Theatre presentation or are they a different
adaptation? One Digester referred to the version that was done on
PBS a number of years back - as a fund-raiser, I believe - and to
me it seemed to be the Lux play. And that dropped script
business? - staged, it appeared to me.
This is my general gripe when particularly commercial entities
(community theater groups, etc.) reprise old time radio - they
ham it up, thinking it can't stand on its own. Like Rodney
Dangerfield, OTR don't get no respect.

I noticed the name of Pat Padgett on the births/deaths list for 12/29.
Wasn't there a comedy team known as "Pick and Pat"? Was Pat Padgett
part of this team?

Subject: Gilbert and Lionel
In late 1933, NBC was airing two juvenile adventure programs, each 15
minutes long and sponsored by a prominent toy company. Both of these
series were produced in Manhattan at Station WJZ.
The [removed] Gilbert Company, purveyors of the famous Erector Sets, as
well as dozens of other scientific sets involving chemistry, radio,
engineering, etc., sponsored "Engineering Thrills." This show aired
exciting stories involving all sorts of engineering projects; one of
the first programs told the tale of two men rescued from a caisson
below the surface of the Susquehanna River while working on the
supports of the Camden Bridge. John Holbrook and Kelvin Keach were on
this show, but it is not known which one "impersonated" [removed] Gilbert
in the commercials. Walter Tetley apparently had occasional roles in
this drama.
The second series was "True Railroad Adventures" and the Lionel
Corporation paid the bills on this one. Lionel electric trains were
very popular with kids in that era and the company encouraged sales
and loyalty by giving a subscription to Lionel Magazine to every one
who had a train set (or who wanted one.) The radio series was built
around "Little Jimmy" who'd climb into the train cab at the beginning
of each episode where the engineer, "Mike Bolan," would begin telling
a thrilling story, which would then be dramatized. Jimmy and Mike
would return at the end of the story in time for the last Lionel
commercial. Ben Grauer was the announcer on the show; Wilmer Walter
played Mike while James McCallion was Jimmy.
Very little more is known about this two programs. No audio copies
have surfaced yet, nor have any scripts been found. Karl Schadow and
I have recently taken an interest in attempting to uncover more data
about this two series.
Any Digesters have anything to contribute to the cause?

It's that time again . . .
The web-site for the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention is going to be updated
in about a week and I have a number of time slots open for panels and/or
presentations about old-time radio. The convention operates on an open-door
policy so anyone can do a presentation. You do not have to be a member of the
convention planning committee to participate so anyone, even authors or fans,
who wants to host a presentation please let me know asap.
The dates are August 27, 28 and 29.
Presentations can be anything nostalgic. The history of Sky King, a
presentation about voice actor Alan Reed, Frank Sinatra spoofs, Judy Garland
on the radio, you get the idea. Simply drop me a line. Already slated this
year is a presentation about the history of SGT. PRESTON OF THE YUKON and a
presentation about THE LUX RADIO THEATER.

Barrymore recorded "A Christmas Carol" for MGM Records. Decca Records cast
Ronald Colman as Scrooge ... Columbia's version starred Basil
Rathbone. Victor's starred Eustace Wyatt
Thanks for your input, Randy. I've come across several more factoids this
holiday season.
The Chappell/Wyatt version differs from most of the many produced-for-record
CAROLs, in that it is well over 30min. long. And for me, the story simply
can't be done justice to in under 30. It is VERY much in the "radio" style
(in
fact, sources say it was - illegally - used as such), and features several
other Network vets, including Larry Robinson (one of the best actors I ever
had
the pleasure to work with at FOTR) as Tiny Tim. Alas, I find Wyatt a bit
over and one-note in the lead.
