Subject: The Falcon

A recent post asked about the origins of The Falcon.

He was created by Michael Arlen (1895-1956), who is remembered today for
only two things: creating the Falcon, and his 1924 bestselling novel "The
Green Hat."

In later years he seems to have stopped writing altogether, but we might
surmise that his royalty cheques from The Falcon helped make ends meet.

The amazing thing is that the literary career of The Falcon consists of one
single story published in 1940 in "The Strand" magazine (the home turf of
Conan Doyle and many a famous writer of the day). But the character was
snapped up by Hollywood and the radio networks and the rest is history.

The oft-told story is that RKO replaced their Saint series of B-movies with
the very similar Falcon series because they were tired of Leslie Charteris
looking over their shoulder and criticising what they were doing with his
character! (The Val Kilmer movie of the Saint was - not surprisingly -
made after Charteris had died.)

As for why the name of the character was [removed] Well, they like to do
that sort of thing. Remember the TV series about The Incredible Hulk?
They changed the hero's name from Bruce Banner to David because it sounded
too wimpy (which I thought was the idea!).

Subject: anti-satellite ad

A local radio station is running what I assume is a nationally-produced
advertisement meant to meet competition from satellite radio. They start
with the introduction to The Shadow and how great old radio was, then how
things progressed into more modern radio, and then to satellite radio with
its hundreds of dollars of annual fees and now, advertisements. So stick to
your local radio stations, friends, it sez, don't be fooled by the purveyors
of satellite radio.

This was interesting in that it tells us that satellite radio must be making
a dent in traditional radio listenership. The station was, I think, a
country-and-western out of Newark, OH.

Subject: "Oldies" program?

Hi,

I have a couple of nominees for the list of "Firsts" in shows that featured
"Oldies" way back when. In the early 1950s, KFI (NBC-Los Angeles) aired
Andy and Virginia Mansfield's local DJ show entitled "Turn Back The Clock".
The format was: Virginia would play a fairly new hit record, following
which, Andy would play the original version of the same song done years
earlier, usually by another artist or band. The series was also syndicated
on AFRTS for years. Chuck Cecil's "Swingin' Years" began on KFI in 1957,
was also on AFRTS for years, and continues in syndication, to this very day!
My friend (and co-author of Radio's Golden Years), Frank Bresee, tells me
that he began doing interviews and airing bits of OTR shows (locally in Los
Angeles) in the early [removed] the "Golden Years" were still going
strong! Frank, too, hosted his "Golden Days of Radio" for 29 years on
AFRTS. Frank continues to host shows on Yesterday [removed] to this day.

Subject: Mp3 standards

I am about to start transferring 35 years woth of tapes and discs to disital
media. I remember last year someone mentioning standards for creating mp3
files for archival purposes. Could someone refresh my memory? Also, could
someone briefly rerun the "baking" procedure for removing squeals from
tapes? Many thanks in advance.

Subject: I Love a Mystery

Just got finished listening to the Temple of Vampires,
and am struck with how well done the program was. I've
only had one episode of the series, until recently. I
know now why the series is so loved and has such a
following. Very well done, very entertaining.

I'm on the tail end of a book "Raised on Radio" by Gerald Nachman. A biography
of sorts of many of the great otr shows. I found it quite fascinating. Great
backstories!
I know there are lots of books about individual shows. But I would like
another book like Raised on Radio. Any suggestions?
