In the early 1970s, Merv Griffin hosted an episode of his talk show on TV
with several OTR guests. I had recorded the audio on cassette at the time,
but
have lost it.
I specifically remember guests included Minerva Pious (Mrs. Nussbaum) and Al
Hodge (Green Hornet). Does anyone have a video or audio recording of this
program?

Parker Fennelly was Ebeneezer Williams of Crabtree County. He was Nick
Charles's old friend and partner.
His voice was very reconcilable.

I thought I remembered the name, but I couldn't place it. Thanks.
The "Mr. Peepers" show seems to have been a haven for another otr

looking for an apartment, and the landlord or real estate agent is
played by Heywood Hale Broun. Wasn't he a radio newscaster?

But if he's the town doctor, wasn't Fibber sometimes his patient,

Subject: "Candy Matson's" divorce
Thanks to Kathy Hammel, a dedicated OTR researcher in southern CA, we
now have most of the pertinent facts on Natalie Park's 1943 divorce
from her first husband, some six years before she and her second
husband, Monty Masters, created "Candy Matson, YU 2-8209."
This was obviously not a amicable parting of the ways for Natalie and
hubby P. Melvin Wickland. Unfortunately, the majority of this divorce
file has been destroyed in the routine business of the San Francisco
court to save space. After about 40-50 years, they strip all divorce
files (and probably other civil actions) retaining only a few documents
from each file. Kathy obtained copies of the remaining four documents,
consisting of: 1) the summary of this divorce file in which the court
clerk records the identity and date of filing of every motion, order,
degree, affidavit, and stipulation , 2) a copy of the final decree of
divorce dated January 19, 1943, dissolving the marriage, returning
Natalie's maiden name of Park to her, and ordering her ex-husband to
"take nothing by reason of his cross-complaints (since) judgment being
in favor of the plaintiff (Natalie) on said cross-complaints.", 3) copy
of interlocutory judgment of divorce, and 4) court order of Nov 24,
1941 ordering Melvin to pay her temporary alimony, while divorce action
was pending, in the amount of $ 15 a week.
The summary of documents filed hints at a no-holds barred separation
and divorce begun in August 1941 followed by 39 separate motions,
petitions, subpoenas and orders filed over the next 21 months. It
actually started with a motion for annulment of the marriage
(apparently filed by Natalie) and then moved into a complicated divorce
action. It almost went to trial in 1942 but apparently did not,
although from the summary titles it is not clear who backed down. Nor
are Natalie's initial complaints set forth (other than a general
"grounds of extreme cruelty" which was one of the few reasons one could
sue for divorce in those days) and neither are the cross-complaints
made by P. Melvin. Interestingly enough both parties to this divorce
went through two separate law firms during the battle.
Alas, none of these documents set forth the date and place of their
marriage, so that is still to be uncovered. Marriage records of that
era in CA are not computerized, so we may have to find a volunteer in
the Bay City to go to the courthouse. Any takers?

Subject: Origins of Senator Claghorn and Titus Moody
During an interview with Alan Young at Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound
Showcase VII on June 26, 1999, Alan was asked several questions about one of
his radio series, THE ALAN YOUNG SHOW. He was talking about various
characters on the show and the following tidbit came out:
We had two characters that the sponsor didn't like so he threw them off.
One was Kenny Delmar doing a Southern politician who we called Counselor
Cartenbranch who would say in big voice
That's a joke son!
The Counselor was a Democrat and the sponsor was a Republican, so he threw
the Counselor off the show.
Then we had Parker Fennelley who played a crotchety old New Englander of
few words. The sponsor didn't like him either.
Fred Allen called up before he started his season and said,
Are you going to use these characters?
My manager said,
No, they're kicked off the show.
So Fred took them and they became Senator Claghorn and Titus Moody.
Signing off for now,
Stewart Wright

Subject: Fibbers Address
Alas, I was wrong on one account on my ramblings on Doc Gamble and Fibber.
It has been a while since I listened to the programs, so forgive me. And
considering my propensity to remember numbers if they are prime, my wife
would
probably accuse me of losing it for not remembering "79".
But it was notified by email of another possible error.
"One minor observation, however: Doc Gamble could not have been married
during at least part of the run of the series, since he and Mayor LaTrivia
seemed always to be sparring over the affections of some French actress, Fifi
something-or-other."
But then, MD does not stand for "Medical Deity" and presumably they are not
excluded from the propensities that we XYs possess.

Subject: Fudd & Doo Dah
I was having trouble posting, so please forgive the delay in responding
to the thread about Arthur Q. Bryan. A new generation of listeners to
my radio show "Kids Corner" know him from the song "I Wuv Wabbits,"
which was recently voted Number One, and stayed in that position for a
whole week. The song is on "Spike Jones: The Man Who Murdered Music,"
which was produced by list member Jordan R. Young.
This year's Ocean City (NJ) Doo Dah Parade is April 22. Mickey Rooney
is the Grand Marshal of the Parade, which will include a tribute to him
later that night. But the big news (for me) is that Soupy Sales will
make his annual appearance at the Parade to start "Pieasco." Pieasco is
an event where 100 (or so) people smoosh themselves and each other with
shaving cream pies in honor of Soupy.
Doo Dah/Pieasco is a wonderful family-friendly event that includes
comedians and other performers paying homage to the greats of the past,
including a Jack Benny impersonation that is spot-on. More information
about Doo Dah/Pieasco is at my show's website [removed]. Click
on "Where's Kathy," and you'll be taken to information on Doo Dah. Just
look for the photo of Soupy Sales.

I discuss this casting in my section on "The Thin Man" in my "Private
Eyelashes" book. Fennelly was brought into the series in the mid-40s
to add a little comic relief as Ebeneezer Williams, the Sheriff of
Crabtree County. Since he would have no jurisdiction where the
Charles' lived (New York City) the writers had to keep coming up with
excuses for him "to drop in" and hang around for the solution of the
mystery. However, by that time, this detective series had morphed into
what was basically a situation comedy.
