SAME TIME, SAME STATION
We finish our look at things that went wrong on Radio on this week's
Same Time, Same Station.
Let's begin with a special program which took place outside the KNX
studios in Hollywood. It was a program dedicated to fire prevention and
safety. Anchored by several announcers from CBS and KNX, the 30 minute
show was designed to show you what it was like for a fireman who got the
call to action. Unfortunately when the fire station did get a call the
fire truck never got in to action. The rear axle fell off. But to listen
to the broadcast you would never know it. The gentleman from KNX never
missed a beat and so the listener saw a completely different story than
did the observer on hands. We know the origin of this story because Dick
Joy, (employed by KNX and CBS) was there and he told us this story many
years later.
The program aired 10/14/38.
Next, THE JACK BENNY SHOW
from 02/20/49 Guests Fletcher Markle And Jack Warner. Both try to talk
Jack out of doing The Horn Blows At Midnight on The Ford theater.
Jack Warner not only has trouble talking Jack Benny out of doing the
broadcast, but he is rather shaky when reading lines from his script
during the program. Listen for the exchange between both Jacks Benny and
Warner, in the later half of the show.
Finally, we will hear Jack Benny's performance on THE FORD THEATER
from 03/04/49 episode (61) The Horn Blows at Midnight.

Subject: Radio and the Civil War
On April 12, 1861, the first shots were fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston
Harbor, thus beginning America's four-year Civil War in earnest. This
Saturday, "Those Were the Days" commemorates the 150th anniversary of this
cataclysmic conflagration with an afternoon of radio about (not from,
obviously) the Civil War, including The Cavalcade of America's production of
"Abe Lincoln: The War Years," the surrender of General Robert E. Lee on "You
Are There," and a 1939 Columbia Workshop that includes interviews with
surviving members of the Confederate Army! Plus, we'll tune in to radio
adaptations of two classic Civil War stories as the NBC University Theater
presents "The Red Badge of Courage" and Escape offers "Occurrence at Owl
Creek Bridge." Those Were the Days is heard every Saturday afternoon from 1
to 5 pm CST at WDCB-FM ([removed] in Chicagoland, [removed] everywhere else).
Each TWTD show is archived for a week at [removed]

Subject: Unit 99
My wife and I have been listening to a series called Unit 99. It is actual
tape
recordings of the Sacramento police on patrol, investigating complaints,
interviewing witness and making arrests. It sounds like it takes place just
after
the big war, maybe in the late 40s or early 50s. Almost all the programs we
listened to are "brought to you by the Armed Forces Radio Network", although
some
of them mention ABC radio. My problem is that I can't find anything on this
program. I know Dunning is not the end all, but he doesn't even mention it.
Does
anyone know anything about it?
Dates of broadcast, sponsors, anything.
Thanks;
Roby McHone

Subject: Plug for Cincinnati Convention
I've given a plug to the Cincinnati OTR convention in my latest blog entry.

Due to technical difficulties, one of the photos appears twice.
I've addressed OTR in other entries as well, but this one is very much about the Cincinnati convention in particular.
I also mentioned it on a thread on Peter David's blog, since I know some of the regular visitor there are OTR fans to one degree or another.
