Robert Everest wrote about Butch Cavendish being the only person the Lone
Ranger ever killed on the radio program. Technically, the ranger didn't even
kill Butch. Butch fell from a cliff overlooking Bryant's Gap while fighting
with the masked man. "It was him or me", the ranger says after helping Butch
over the side as the outlaw lunged at him.
However, in the very first script, before the character was fully developed,
it is mentioned that the ranger had shot several men "between the eyes". This
script was re-created a number of years back by the Friends of Old Time Radio.
A bloodthirsty fellow, that masked man!

Subject: The Aldrich Family
Good friend Andrew commented about an episode of THE ALDRICH FAMILY titled "Coupon Craze"
that has been circulating among collectors with a possible broadcast date of April 23, 1940
and April 24, 1940. He commented, "It is not unusual for new research to discover dates for
previously undated shows. Research on show dates can be done any number of ways such as network
logs, show scripts or newspaper listings."
Andrew is correct. Newspapers only printed what was supplied to them via press release from
the studio or the advertising agency presenting the program. Newspapers, however, printed only
the smallest percentage of the numerous press releases they received. And as Andrew pointed out,
things can change between the time the press release was issued and the actual broadcast.
To find the accurate broadcast date requires comparing more than one source of information,
newspapers being the least reliable and least accurate. The actual radio scripts are one
source that can prove reliable, but personally, I have found that collections of radio
scripts can be first drafts with intended broadcast dates. Press releases can help but the
problem is, they are not easy to come by. The actual transcription discs can help, but I and
anyone who has dealt with transcription discs, knows typos and mistakes can be made on the
disc labels, and in some cases, it's the recording date, not the broadcast date. Comparing
one source and assuming it's reliable is not the way to go. As Andrew suggested, what needs
to be done is to verify ALL of them and then apply common sense. I've met two people over the
years who make "assumptions" and then, not wanting to be proven wrong, are in denial by
claiming their source is accurate and not open to possible revisions.
Regarding THE ALDRICH FAMILY, that show is a mess. The radio scripts have no titles which
means all of the titles assigned to the recordings are made up, mostly from collectors and
vendors. Thankfully, the Library of Congress has been pulling the NBC press releases and
slowly (very slowly) a broadcast log with plots has been in the works. And the scripts,
copyrighted and registered at the Library of Congress are being used for comparison. To my
knowledge, 1940 hasn't been done yet, but in the near future, later this calendar year, that
may become a reality. So unless someone says "I have the transcription disc for that recording
and this is the date that is listed on the disc label," we'll have to wait till later in
the year for the broadcast log. But hope is on the horizon.

Subject: Gunsmoke gone wild
Hello, Gang,
I've been listening to the old Gunsmoke radio shows for years. On the way
to work I listen to the first half of a show and on the way back, the
second. I never tire of these characters and story lines.
The other day I stumbled upon a show I had never heard before called "The
New Hotel."
Everything was going as normal when, after a short music break, there is
a rickety sound effect in the background and Matt growls "Kitty, Get that
goddamn thing out of here."
I thought "Well, that's unusual for an old radio show, isn't it?"
Then all hell breaks loose.
To me it sounds like the crew and the cast are getting progressively drunk
throughout the broadcast. Laughing and cursing up a storm including a few
F-bombs and a musical joke where the, apparently drunken, band starts
playing "I don't want to set the world on fire" after announcing the fire at
the
hotel.
Okay. Maybe the rest of you know all about this recording and you're
shaking your head thinking "Where's this guy been?" But I listen to a LOT of
shows every week and have been doing so for 40 years. I've never heard
anything
like this. My guess is that it's a recording of a rehearsal and the cast
and crew were having a party at the same time.
So, I would love to know the real background story behind this "hotel"
episode. Anyone?

Have you -- or anyone else -- had a chance to listen to that Lights Out
episode? I'd be interested in a plot synopsis, number of characters, and
whether or not there was any first person narration.
