There's some up on the [removed] website, which has quite a lot of OTR.
I think the link below will get your California friend right into a place
where he can start listening right away.

If the link doesn't work, just go to [removed], click on the AUDIO link,
and then do a search for "Command Performance" . Check out the other OTR
on the site. The OTRR (Old Time Radio Researchers) group has put quite a

Subject: Two new OTR books just published

A few years ago I put a posting on the OTR Digest asking for feedback on a
book proposal, a book containing a collection of interviews gathered over
the years with various OTR stars. A ton of feedback came in and everyone
seemed to love it but the project fell through because the man who did all
the interviews was legally stuck with an old contract and could not have
the book come to be. Since then, about a year afterwards, Chuck Schaden
came out with a book on interviews and it was very well received. Almost a
year ago Mel Simons told me at FOTR that he was contemplating taking some
of the recorded interviews he saved over the last year decades and putting
them to book form.

I am pleased to say that Mel's book not only got published, but I spent a
good hour today browsing the reading the interviews. Mel is a regular
attendee at FOTR and has been the host of his own radio program for years
over WBZ Radio in Boston, so he has amassed a large collection of
interviews and this book contains Edgar Bergen, Ezra Stone, Dennis Day,
Rudy Vallee, Bret Morrison, Lon Clark, Frank Nelson, Mel Blanc, Don Wilson,
Jackson Beck, Freeman Gosden, Kenny Delmar, Jim Jordan, Harold Peary,
Parker Fennelly, and others. Obviously, such discussions bring out
interesting "in-their-own words" commentary and trivia only the stars could
reveal. Book is recommended.

The other book just published this week is one of my own. (Yep, shameless
plug.) Two years in the works, THE RAILROAD HOUR: A History of the Radio
Series is now available. 245+ pages. Features a biography of Lawrence and
Lee and their radio work, bio on Gordon MacRae and the supporting cast, fun
facts about the Railroad Hour, the connection between the Association of
American Railroads and Musical Appreciation, a history of the series (from
the program's origin and first critical review in a trade paper to the
final broadcast and why the series left the air after six seasons), and
info about the Railroad Horu commercials.

Also lists all the ABC and NBC stations across the country that carried the
program, the local sponsors named during commercials, awards and honors the
program received, and why the series was called "Hour" when it only ran 30
minutes (45 minutes in the first season).

As usual, the book includes a complete episode guide for every episode
broadcast. Gerald Wilson and I went to extremes to get as complete as we
could, and an example of an episode entry is listed below for anyone
curious. (Keep in mind the book, like all of the books I penned, are not
supposed to be the definitive book. Just a book that should fill in a gap
OTR history has been lacking and hopefully, satisfy all the fans of the
program.)

This is also a great opportunity for me to open a discussion (if it grows
into a discussion) and point out the difference between an episode guide
and a broadcast log. A broadcast log is often referred to as a list of
episodes, giving episode numbers, titles, airdates, and sometimes a partial
cast. An episode guide is simply that - a "guide", not a "log." An
episode guide has tons of details like the entry below:

(choosen out of random)
Episode #81 "MADAME SHERRY" Broadcast April 17, 1950
Cast: Marion Bell (Yvonne, [removed] Madame Sherry), Isabel Jewell (the girl
and Catherine), Gordon MacRae (Edward Sherry) and Ted Osborne (Uncle
Theophilus).
Based on the Viennese operetta of the same name, which premiered at the New
Amsterdam Theatre on August 30, 1910.
Music score by Karl Hoschna, with book and lyrics by Otto Harbach.
Adapted for THE RAILROAD HOUR by Jean Holloway.
Story and Histroy: A wealthy uncle and his niece pay a surprise visit to
his sponging nephew, who is supposed to be a family man. The nephew
forewarned, hores a "family" to carry out his deceptin, in the hopes of
wheedling some money out of his wealthy uncle. The New York production of
this musical kept the plot intact from the initial Viennese version, but
America librettist Otto Harbach provided a new book and lyrics with all-new
melodies by Karl Hoschna, so the music and lyrics score included "Every
Little Movement (Has a Meaning All Its Own)."
Songs Inclued: Every Little Movement (sung by MacRae and churos);
Theophilus (MacRae); Uncle Says I Musn't (Bell and chorus); Every Little
Movement (reprise with Bell, MacRae and chorus); The Smile She Means for
You (MacRae and chorus); Birth of Passion (Bell and MacRae); and Every
Little Movement (reprise with entire cast).
Trivia: It took the show two years to get Bell to guest on an episode. She
was in California to do a version of THE CHOCOLATE SOLDIER, hence the
reason they were able to get her to the studio without flying or travelling
to the West Coast state. THE RAILROAD HOUR was the subject of a feature
story in this week's issue of QUICK magazine, which included a full-page
picture of Gordon MacRae.

I have gotten into discussions with people way too many times, much more
than I can remember, regarding the difference between what you can find in
a published book, and what you can find on the internet. There have been a
few exceptions, but for the most part, when trying to learn who was
featured in the cast of a particular episode, or trying to figure out the
exact title and broadcast date of an episode to a recording that is lacking
that info, most published books on the subject can usually answer those
questions much quicker and easier than web-sites that merely list something
like this:

78. "Sunny" (March 27, 1950) Lee Millar
79. "The Song of Norway" (April 3, 1950) Dorothy Coulter
80. "Naughty Marietta" (April 10, 1950) Nadine Conner
81. "Madame Sherry" (April 17, 1950) Marion Bell
82. "The Prince of Pilsen" (April 24, 1950) Hans Conried

So, with obvious statement, Ben Ohmart's BearManor Media company
([removed]) has THE RAILROAD HOUR book available now. Just
got published yesterday and I got my copy today so anyone who has been
waiting for the book to get published, or for someone to write a book about
the series, it's available now from Ben's web-site.

"Film explores tiny Yukon land rush created by Quaker Oats"

Canadian filmmaker David McDonald goes in search of the seven square inches
of land in the Yukon he believes he has held since he was six years old in
the new documentary Cereal Thriller.

The Ottawa-based filmmaker, 60, got a "deed" to the land during the 1950s,
after writing in to a promotion run by the Quaker Oats-sponsored radio
program Sergeant Preston of the Yukon.

In his documentary, scheduled to air on History Television at 8 [removed] ET
Friday, McDonald sets out to track down others who also received the deeds
and to find out what happened to his small patch of the North.

From Those Were The Days --

1933 - The first broadcast of The Romance of Helen Trent was heard. The
show continued on the air for 7,222 episodes and 27 years. Amazingly, Helen
stayed at 35 years of age throughout the entire series. The show used two
Helen Trents over the years. The first Helen was played by
Virginia Clark (for 11 years) and the second by Julie Stevens (for 16 years).

1933 - During his fourth Fireside Chat, [removed] President Franklin D.
Roosevelt showed why the homey, warm, comfortable discussion was, indeed, a
fireside chat. The President stopped the discussion on the air and asked
for a glass of water, which he then sipped. Newsman Robert
Trout is credited with coming up with the name, Fireside Chat, because of
real moments like this.

1943 - Foreign Assignment, was first heard on Mutual. The title role of
Brian Berry was played by Jay Jostyn, who also starred in another popular
radio drama, Mr. District Attorney.

So if someone is looking for a web-site about hula hoops of the 1950s, they can find it on her site if google isn't coming up with perfect hits. She has a page dedicated for old-time radio, so anyone reading this - if you have a web-site of your own, whether it's for reference, fun or business, e-mail her so she can put a link to your site. There is one stipulation: you have to put a link to her site on yours. (It's a VERY simple condition as most people can add a link on their site to hers.)
