Dear Reader:

Hi, everybody! I hope by now you have established a schedule for playing
episodes of "The Cinnamon Bear." Remember, there are 26 installments
(available everywhere, including your local Borders). They should be
programmed between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Research by First
Generation Radio Archives has determined that the very first episode was
broadcast in the USA on Friday, November 26, 1937, so you will be carrying
on a tradition lasting over seventy years!

Your family will thrill to the adventures of Paddy, Jimmy and Judy Barton,
and the Crazy Quilt Dragon, as they search Maybeland for the missing silver
star that goes atop the Barton family Christmas tree. If you don't have the
program tapes, all the clubs and dealers have them, most of whom write to
this list. YES, It is time once again to celebrate THE CINNAMON BEAR, first
heard in 1937.

Charlie helped me make the Maybeland map and the eleven songs in the serial
more accessible to you this year. Just go to:

[removed]

You can print them off and use them as you listen with your kids to the
program. You'll have so much fun.

It is golden age radio at its best, with the actors who are so familiar to
you---Joseph Kearns, Elvia Allman, Gale Gordon, Frank Nelson, Martha
Wentworth, Barbara Jean Wong, Verna Felton, Hanley Stafford, Elliott Lewis,
Lou Merrill, Howard McNear, and the list goes on and on and on.

As Paddy himself says, "I'd be much obliged to you!"

Sincerely,

Dennis Crow

(via Charlie Summers, who reminds you the best-sounding copies of these
programs are available from the First Generation Radio Archives - see:

[removed]

...for more details. Also, there is an iCalendar schedule for import into
any modern calendar application attached to the blog post at:

[removed]

The first episode, assuming you listen to one episode every day, should
be heard Sunday, November 29th, so the story will end on Christmas
eve. --cfs3)

My brother, Joe, is still looking for a Fred Allen early recording,
possibly on Town Hall Tonight, when Fred tells the story "The Bricks" aka
"The Sick
Note" aka "Why Paddy's not at Work Today." It was included in a book of
Fred Allen Sketches as a letter to an insurance company dated about 1932.
If you can help, please respond to me and I will forward to my brother. Jay

"Kumbayah" (Come by Here) on The Breakfast Club with Don McNeill, possible in
the
1940's. He would like to know specifically what show(s) on which the song
was sung. Again, please send info to me. Jay

Subject: The Brown Hornet

David Fairweather commented:

Today I was listening to a vintage 1970 broadcast of San Francisco radio
station KYA. Apparently they had a daily feature of "Bill Cosby presents
'The Brown Hornet & Leroy'" It was a serialized send up of the "Green
Hornet" with Cosby doing all the voices. It had corny sound fx and
melodrama. It was cool to hear Cosby doing another OTR tribute besides his
well known tribute to Lights Out "Chicken Heart".

To add another note, on the animated TV series FAT ALBERT AND THE COSBY KIDS,
Fat Albert and his friends would often rush home to watch "The Brown Hornet"
on television, depicted with an animated cartoon character of Bill Cosby in
the role of The Brown Hornet, who flew across space in his Hornet shaped
space ship. An adventure of The Brown Hornet only lasted a few minutes, but
was a recurring scene on the series.

Subject: A poignant moment

The morning after Thanksgiving, while millions were combing the department
stores, I stopped by my grocery to pick up a few things. As I suspected at
8:30 [removed] the day after turkey there weren't many shoppers in that store
that is the size of a triple football stadium. But something they played on
the public address system in the quietness of that experience caught my
attention: it was Gene Autry and the Melody Ranch Boys singing "Here Comes
Santa Claus."

It carried me back to what seems like a thousand Saturday nights when I
listened to him sing that song and so many more aired from "Melody Ranch."
And it did something else for me, too: it carried me forward, and started
my Christmas right then.

Do any of you remember or know who (besides Penner) regularly said "To be
sure, to be sure" in 1940s radio?

 And Kathy answered,

victor rodney gook of vic and sade used this phrase occasionally.

I've heard a ton of V&S episodes - probably most of those in circulation
- and I've never heard Vic say that. Certainly not as a catch phrase.

broadcast over the blue network (ABC later) and sponsored by Esso
