Subject: William Bendix

Andrew Godfrey wrote some very nice thoughts about William Bendix. I have a
true story that reinforces what he says.

In the early 1960s I was working in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota on a cold
winter's day. When I got off work I was hungry and searched out a eating
spot. I went into the first decent looking restaurant I found. Although it
was a little pricier than I was hoping for, it was warm and I didn't have to
walk any further in the bitter wind. It was also packed and had a waiting
list for a table.

As I gave the hostess my name, she said that there was another gentleman who
was dining alone at a table for two and he made it known to her that if
another lone individual came in, he would be happy to share his table. I
said fine.

Yes, you guessed it--I had a pleasant dinner with William Bendix. He was
in town doing some industrial film.

I couldn't tell you now what all we chatted about. I just know it was a
very delightful conversation.

And I didn't even think to get his autograph!

My information about "Molly" - Marion Jordan - came not from a TV show but
from a person who knew both Jim and Marion for a number of years. She may
have had psychiatric problems but I do not believe she just pretended to
have had rheumatic fever for fifteen years by sitting at a microphone during
performances, because she could not stand for half an hour or more. - JIM

Subject: There's not a greasy spot left

1911 - Procter & Gamble Company of Cincinnati, OH introduced Crisco
hydrogenated shortening. (Where would all those shows have been with
Crisco as a sponsor? And remember, its digestable! -ed)

Remember this little ditty done to a Dixieland jazz beat?

"They're cookin' with Crisco, from New York to 'Frisco
Pies are so flaky, cakes are so [removed]
Fried foods digestible, with Crisco they're right
So-o-o-o keep on cookin' with Cris-co! C-R-I-S-C-O!"

Procter & Gamble took over sponsorship of five weekday visits with Young Dr.
Malone "and all the other Three Oaks people" between 1940-55 on NBC and then
CBS. Sandy Becker was the physician for most of that epoch while Ron
Rawson, one of P&G's most durable spokesmen, delivered the Crisco
commercials.

I recently picked up a bottle of Crisco (we always bought it in a can back
then) and noticed that Smuckers (as Mason Adams reminded, "With a name like
Smuckers, it has to be good") located just down the road from Cincinnati has
acquired the Crisco label. We've discussed before that P&G is casting off
many of the brands that made it the powerhouse it is (Oxydol, Lava, et al.).

[removed] wonder if Bess Pringle and her son-in-law Tom Baugh are rolling
around in their graves now that P&G is no longer extolling the virtues of
"light, all-digestible Crisco." In their little vignettes, they couldn't
say enough good words about the commodity. While Aunt Jenny's announcer Dan
Seymour was consuming delicacies by the millions coated in Spry over in
Littleton ("For all you bake or fry, rely on Spry!"), Tom Baugh was gorging
himself on stuff done in Crisco in Three Oaks.

Could it have been all those fried foods that finally polished them all off?
There's hardly a greasy spot left on radio any more (or apparently at P&G
either).

Subject: [removed] Convention

To add to Ken's posting about the convention in Aberdeen, [removed]

There have been some new events added to the schedule during the last two
months.

Mark Bialek, president of the Drive-In Theatre Owners Association (UDITOA)
will host the film "Drive-In Movie Memories," a documentary by Don and Susan
Sanders. It is a drive-in theater retrospective so anyone wanting a deeper
understanding of how the drive-in theaters operated, and their cultural
significance (not to mention the origin of drive-in theaters), will enjoy
this Saturday evening escapade.

On Sunday morning, Richard Herd will chat about his career in films, TV,
radio, the Theatre, with Derek Tague, and his triumph as Cecil B. DeMille in
his one man show with film clips of his performance and clips from DeMille's
THE CHEAT AND THE SQUAW MAN, his first silent feature.

Just a reminder that the following Old-Time Radio related subjects will be
featured in the event room:

THE HISTORY OF THE GREEN HORNET
Terry Salomonson, an authority on THE GREEN HORNET will be
emcee for an hour-long panel about the history and trivia of one
of radio and TV's great crime fighters!

BASEBALL BROADCASTS OF THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO
Ken Stockinger, a fan and expert on baseball broadcasts of the
1930s, 40s, and 50s will be discussing the fascination for
preserving these old-time recordings, and offering a sample of
          some of the great homers!

PRIVATE EYELASHES: FEMALE DETECTIVES ON RADIO
Jack French, author of the book of the same name, will be
discussing the subject in length and probably playing a few
recordings too! Jack will also be autographing copies of his book
          afterwards!

COCA COLA SPOTLIGHT BANDS ON RADIO
Dan Riedstra has been researching this rarely-documented radio
program and presenting his findings for everyone.

HISTORY OF THE GRAND OLE' OPRY
          Presented by Michael Hayde
A national music institution that began as a popular radio program
in 1927, and later expanded into a TV program and whose weekly
broadcasts continue to this day. Learn the fascinating story
behind
this phenomenon and enjoy samples of classic folk music.

AUTHOR PANEL
Researchers and authors discuss the pros and cons, the
difficulties
and rewards for the books they write about nostalgic shows.
Includes authors Jim Cox, Michael Hayde, and others.

DRAGNET SPOOFS
by Michael Hayde and Derek Tague
Thought Rocky and Bullwinkle, Stan Freeburg and Johnny Carson
were the only people who spoofed this classic cop program?
Michael and Derek will show you just how many there were!

JFK ASSASSINATION RECORDINGS
A fascinating discussion of how the radio news reports of that
fateful
November day kept Americans in touch of the latest developments.
Hosted by Neal Ellis, who will be playing never-before-seen and
highly
treasured recordings from his personal collection.

OLD TIME RADIO PREMIUMS
Bill McMahon will characterize radio premiums and explain why they
were
offered to listeners. Typical radio premium offers will be
analyzed, and some
common radio premium myths will be discussed.

Not to mention the numerous OTR-related films playing in the movie room such
as two Lum and Abner TV broadcasts from 1949, a Command Performance from
1944, the 1933 movie of LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE, Charlie McCarthy, Detective
(1939), Meet Boston Blackie (1941), The Gracie Allen Murder Case (1941),
Henry Aldrich, Editor (1941), Bulldog Drummond (1929), The Life of Riley
(1948), and two episodes of the CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT television show to name a
few.

Two Radio recreations on stage and a vaudeville performance on stage will be
a highlight, no doubt.

Enough of the details, though, as you can find all of the info you need as
ken mentioned, at [removed]

Subject: Hotel and Dinner details

Almost forgot - to add to the posting I just sent about [removed] . . .

Three very important things.

One, regarding the evening dinner, the same dinner Charlie Summers is
directing the X-MINUS ONE recreation with most of the Hollywood stars that
are attending . . . the dinner banquet is limited to a number of seats by
contract with the hotel and I am running low on open seats (which I did not
think was going to happen). If you plan to pay at the door when you get
there, it's fine by me but at least e-mail me and let me know you intend to
because at the rate it has been going, I will have all of the dinner tickets
sold out by the day of the convention EASILY. If you have not made bookings
or transportation arrangements and this has kept you from booking a place at
the dinner on Sunday night, let me know so I am aware of this.

Two, a complete list of all the hotels and motels within sight (and walking)
distance of the convention hotel is on the web-site but at least two motels
are sold out completely.

This was confirmed by two people during the past few weeks who called to
tell me this, as they themselves almost had difficulty booking rooms. The
prices vary and the Red Roof Inn next to the Clarion has some computer
program that automatically adjusts the rates as rooms get scarce. Use AAA
if it helps.

Anyone coming by themselves who want to split the cost of a hotel room in
half and are looking for someone to share a room that has two beds, let me
know and I can connect you with someone. A lot of people do this - it's a
common thing at every convention I go to - so the cost factor is NOT as
expensive as you might think. (Heck, Sonny, one of the dealers, lives three
hours away and he's splitting a room and it's costing him something like
$[removed] a night!)

THE CLARION HOTEL (where the convention is being held) 410-273-6300
RED ROOF INN (next door to the Sheraton, adjoining parking lot)
410-273-7800

All other hotels and motels are across the street . . . call around for best
rate!
SUPER 8 MOTEL 410-272-5420
DAYS INN 410-272-8500
TRAVELODGE HOTEL 410-272-5500
QUALITY INN 410-272-6000
HOLIDAY INN (the most expensive of the bunch) 410-272-8100

Third and lastly, there may be parking issues. The hotel has a large
parking lot but judging by the number of parking spaces to the number of
pre-paid attendance, it may be necessary to park at Red Roof Inn or Japan
House next door. I have gotten permission from both places to have parking
there in the event (Saturday being very likely) so if the parking lot looks
full when you get there, do park at the Japan House or the Red Roof Inn.

If coming by Amtrak, get off at the Aberdeen station and do let us know in
advance so we know what time to pick you up so you don't have to walk 2
miles to the hotel.

Subject: RE:Mike Douglas

In his discussion of TV talkshow hosts Mike Douglas, Dinah Shore, and Merv
Griffin who sang on their shows, my pal Derek Tague challenged Jerry
Springer or Oprah Winfrey to do likewise. I don't know about Oprah, but
over the years Jerry Springer occasionally recorded some songs, released an
album, and every once in a while (as recently as this past week) plays some
of them on his Air America radio talk show going into or coming out of
commercial breaks if the topic of the song fits the discussion. He usually
follows the record with an apology for playing it and a promise to never do
it again. And of course, his TV talk show -- totally unrelated to his radio
talk show -- has been turned into an OPERA! I'm not kidding, "Jerry
Springer: The Opera" has been a big hit in London and England for 5 years.

(expletives deleted, of course.)

-Craig"

I don't remember said re-creation in _Pinky and the
Brain_, but that incident served as Maurice LaMarche's
inspiriation for the voice of the Brain. According to
comments made at the 2002 San Diego Comic Con
(recorded as an extra on Mark Hamill's _Comic Book The
Movie_ mockumentary DVD), LaMarche would recite
Welles' diatribe to help get into character. He
performed said diatribe at the convention (and on the
aforementioned DVD). He also performs a G-rated
version on the _Pinky and the Brain_ DVD extra, "Are
You Pondering What I'm Pondering," which also includes
Rob Paulsen (Pinky) and voice director Andrea Romano.

Speaking of Welles, one of my favorite _Pinky and the
Brain_ episodes is "The Third Mouse."
