Subject: WSM Birthday

Bill Knowlton in his post today, noted that WSM in Nashville is observing its
80th year on the air with special programs, etc. Unfortunately, WDOD in
Chattanooga which celebrated its 80th anniversary on the air on April of this
year, not only ignored this important event, but also changed its format from
nostalgic music of the 1940's through 1970's, to a liberal talk show format.
This has not set well with the 60's and older age group, as The Music of Your
Life was the only station in the area that offered the kind of music format
that we all loved. This format change came with no listener survey and very
liitle notice otherwise. In the course of the change, Earl Freudenberg, a
very popular radio personality who had been with the station for almost 40
years was essentially "encouraged" to quit the station. There are a lot of
unhappy folks in Chattanooga!

Charlie Cantor's daughter, Marla, attends every FOTR convention in
Newark. She is working on a book on her father, but seems ready to
share with anyone else interested in her father. She lives in the New
York City area and is a member of the MWOTRC.

If you will contact me off-list, I will tell you how to contact her.

Subject: Why Paul Frees as Doc for one show?

Hello, it is my understanding that the Gunsmoke cast recorded two shows on
Saturday, one rehearsal and broadcast in the morning, with coffee and
doughnuts, and another rehearsal and broadcast recording in the afternoon.
Why then does Paul Frees play Doc for only the one episode? This question
has been bugging me for a while, and so I thought I'd ask it now.
Thanks a lot.

I may have missed this, but I don't think that anybody mentioned that Ronnie
Barker has died. The BBC has his obituary at:

I know that there are a few other Brits subscirbe here. Maybe like me you
grew up listening to The Navy Lark and watching the Two Ronnies, Porrige or
Open All Hours. I got really choked when I read that he had died. I think
that Ronnie Barker was maybe not a great comedian, but he was one of the
greatest comic actors.

Thanks for all of the good times.

Subject: Halloween OTR

Fall is my favorite season of the year. The weather gets cooler, the leaves
change color, there's the occasional faint smell of wood smoke or burning
leave, college football begins (Go Hokies!), cider is pressed, pies are
baked, and best of all my favorite holiday rolls around again. Of course
with Halloween comes all the great old and new horror movies, and all the
scary OTR.

Every year at this time, people on the list ask for and give suggestions of
shows to listen to. Last year, I started making a list of all the shows
suggested and thought I'd post it this year, and early enough for people to
start hunting these shows down. I'd love to hear any other suggestions.

There was a program from 1972-73 called The Stoned Ranger I remember as
a kid. Bobby Andrews (son of Bob Andrews) wrote the following synopsis
of the show.

"Another great comedy spot ran on WDBO (in)72-73 called the "Stoned
Ranger". It featured a hippie cowboy "far out, Indian" and his sidekick
Toronto. The traditional roles were reversed. When entering a country
store, the owner states, "I don't talk to your kind" and the Indian
replies, "That all right, him with me" I have a tape of those 20
something episodes. Comedy use to have a big place in radio and I miss
that."

Does anyone out there have more information on this program? Are there
any copies of the programs available? I have not been able to get a
hold of Mr. Andrews.

If anyone has any information please let me know either on the Digest or
privately at skeitel@[removed].

This past summer I was listening to a Mercury Summer Theater from 1946. The
show was divided into two segments: first an adaptation of a Ring Lardner
short story "The Golden Honeymoon" and then Orson Welles and some actress
doing scenes from "Romeo and Juliet". The show ran short. First, Orson
made an obviously unscripted invitation for listeners to write in and
suggest what they'd like to hear on the show. Then there was the closing
theme and closing commercial. But when the commercial was done there was
still time left and the band played the closing theme again.
