Hi Folks.
Just wondering if anyone can let me know how many OTR broadcasts of Hawaiian
music are known to survive in OTR circles. I see that OTRCAT sells Royal
Hawaiian Hotel, Jerry Haendiges has some Hawaii Calls disc labels on his
website, and Dave Goldin's website also lists Hawaii Calls + Hawaiian

So, anything else available that you know of ... ... ?
Thanks for your help.

Subject: Old Time Radio Reasearchers Group in comic strip

I have started adding a "Sponsor of the Week" announcement on each audio
version of the "Lum and Abner" comic strip. I begin this weekend (Sunday,
September 2) with The OTRR Group! I've also been doing this on Facebook.

I realized our blind friends may not have been aware of the many fine folks
who make this comic strip project possible, so this will give more
recognition and show our appreciation.

Please visit, read, and listen to "Lum and Abner" which is beginning a new
series: "LET'S 'LECT LUM!" Yes, Lum is running for President of the United
States!

EDDIE HUBBARD SPECIAL: SONGS OF PERSONALITY TRAITS

In 1946 Johnny Mercer, Jo Stafford, and the Pied Pipers recorded a
terrific tune composed by Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen called
"Personality." This song, one of my all time favorites, could have been
an appropriate theme song for this show done by DJ Eddie Hubbard forty
four years later in 1990. On this show Eddie featured recordings that
showcased personality traits on one of his "Special" broadcasts on ABC
Radio. He played songs that described persons who were stupid,
scatterbrained, irresponsible, crazy, mean, lazy, shy, deceptive,
foolish, indecisive, apologetic, and slow. Well in spite of all the
negative characteristics the songs seemed pretty pleasant to hear if
only because of the upbeat renditions. One song even sang about the
trait of gentleness. All of them ended up being fun songs for the most
part, and now somehow after the songs are over they leave us most of the
time feeling that the singers have had or perhaps may still have a
positive relationship. Or perhaps things were not too serious after all
or at least the singers have learned a lesson in love. Among the artists
are Dinah Shore and Tony Martin, who do one of their many fine duet
recordings. Also performing are Frank Sinatra and daughter Nancy, the
Mills Brothers, Vic Damone, Patsy Cline, Billy Eckstein, and Glen
Campbell. Brenda Lee does "I'm Sorry," the recording hit that she had in
1960 at the age of 15. Kay Starr reminds us of her early jazz style as
she performs "Lazy Bones," the classic Hoagy Carmichael-Johnny Mercer
tune, which they wrote after Johnny once found Hoagy snoozing on the
couch. The story goes that Hoagy easily came up with the melody after a
first line lyric by Johnny, and they had a ready made hit in about
twenty minutes. Also, Frankie Laine covered Joni James number 2
Billboard hit "Your Cheatin' Heart" and sings it for us just as it
reached number 18 back in 1953 with Paul Weston's orchestra. Frankie
Masters and his band do Masters' theme song "Scatterbrain," a number 1
hit on Vocation Records in 1939. Incidentally, Masters also did a radio
show called "It Can Be Done," a show featuring stories about people who
had achieved success through adversity, with weekly appearances by
popular poet-journalist Edgar Guest. Band leader Pee Wee King and his
"Golden West Cowboys" band play "Slowpoke" which peaked at number 3 on
Billboard and number 1 on country charts in 1951. There is one fairly
brief interruption after about 10 minutes for commercials. Near the
close of Eddie's show a news break abruptly interrupts the end of the
song by Brenda Lee. The news in part tells of an oil spill off Galveston
Island which places the date for this show in the year 1990. Too bad
there wasn't time for another favorite tune of mine to close the show
with some good positive advice to counteract the focus on negative
personality traits: The great classic song by Mercer-Arlen "Accentuate
the Positive." Happy listening now and, as Johnny Mercer and the Pied
Pipers first sang these lyrics back in 1944-45, "eliminate the negative,
latch on to the affirmative, and don't mess with Mr. In-Between!"

Again, many thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting the
original Eddie Hubbard studio tape for rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time

Episode 5

In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"
