Manhattan Tower Ultimate Oldies Radio
You will need Media Player 9 This program is a little unusual when
compared with the rest of the shows we offer here at Ultimate Oldies
Radio. We think you'll find it stimulating. Host Sandy Singer sets the
scene for 'Manhattan Tower'. This piece, a love story to New York, was
written in 1945, by Gordon Jenkins! When you listen to this performance
in light of 9/11/01, it takes on a great deal of added poignancy.

I am going to take advantage of the good nature of OTR buffs by using this
newsletter to promote my western novel, BOYD MATHESON by James Clay.
There is a legitimate OTR connection here. The authorbs biography on the
back flap of the cover reads: "As a preschooler, James Clay idolized Hopalong
Cassidy. According to him, that fact represents one of the few wise decisions
he
made during the first thirty years of his life." The bio. concludes by noting:
"Jamesb hobby is collecting old-time radio programs. Not surprisingly, his
favorite is HOPALONG CASSIDY."
There is another, obvious OTR connection. The first name of the title
character was borrowed from William Boyd.
I donbt want to give a wrong impression. Except for the name of the main
character, there are no subtle tributes to Hoppy in the plot. The novel stands
or
falls on its own merits. I have tried to write a wholesome, exciting novel
that will appeal to fans of the traditional western
And here comes the best part, readers can enjoy the novel for free! My
publisher, Avalon, does a great job of distributing its wares to public
libraries
across the country. So, if sagebrush sagas are among your favorite OTR
programs
you may want to ask for BOYD MATHESON by James Clay on your next trip to the
local library.
Thanks for your patience, pardners. I give my word as a straight shooter not
to do any more hoorawing about my book in this space.

That's an interesting idea. I think, however, that radio has less
attraction to the general populace than movies, but there is probably enough
of an audience to at least get some visitors.
There are some great logs on various sites, but not really a central
repository that people can work with and stuff.
I'll volunteer to set up a site. I have a little experience with database
driven sites (smaller ones, though). I've registered [removed] for this

I'll post a mail to the group when I have something up there and people can
submit ideas and things for what they would like to see. We can make this
something cool!

I'm completing a catalog page for SPERDVAC's next Archives Library
addition and am stuck on one point. We're including two Quiz Kids shows and I
thought it would be nice to list the kids on the shows. Problem is I'm not
sure
I've correctly spelled everyone's name. If you've got a correction, an
off-Digest e-mail will be greatly appreciated.
Also, I'm certain someone will notice a conflict between the date of
the final broadcast and what's been listed for years in several reference
books. When I obtained transcriptions of the final broadcast I asked resident
expert Jay Hickerson to look into it and he responded that upon further
investigation he discovered the series did not end on 7-5-1953 as had been
believed.
After a summer hiatus, the series aired 9-13-1953 to 1-3-1954, a CBS
sustainer.
(And a public thank you to Jay for doing the research!)
QUIZ KIDS
(A) First question: "What husband gave his wife the only name she ever had?"
3-24-1946 (ABC). Panelists are Joel Kupperman, Maureen Patrice Buckley,
Harve Fischmann, Judy Graham and Richard Likster. Joe Kelley hosts. Bob
Murphy
announces.
(B) First question: "Who first said this famous quote?" 1-3-1954 (CBS).
Final broadcast of the series. Panelists are Naomi Cook, Sally Ann Wilhelm,
Frankie Vandergood, Janet Alhelm and Richard Allman. Joe Kelley hosts. Jack
Taylor announces.
And another mystery: that final show definately was broadcast on CBS,
but the transcriptions have NBC labels. (But then again, when Challenge of
the
Yukon moved from ABC to Mutual in 1951, the transcriptions were still recorded
at ABC and have ABC labels.)

Subject: ILAM book again
Hi all,
Well I should have made myself a bit clearer what I was talking about,
although I'd love to read the ILAM book by Martin Grams JR.
I was speaking about a bookthat a publisher of Comic books was putting out?
Did I dream the whole thing?
It was, I thought, ILAM stories.

Hey gang, I made a very significant and mindblowing discovery just today. I
had a $[removed] bill in my hand (a very rare ocassion to say the least),
looked at the picture on Ben Franklin on the bill, looked even closer, and
started noticing that good old Ben resembled someone familiar other than
himself. As I studied it even harder, I decided to see what Ben would look
like with a haircut, and proceeded to cover up the long hair on his sides,
and almost keeled over when I recognized JACK BENNY!!!! Yes, you all heard
me correctly, J A C K B E N N Y !!!! If you don't beleive me, go out and
find a $[removed] bill and try it. I think that's a far more important
discovery than folding a $[removed] bill just right and discover all this time
that George Washington is actually a [removed] old time radio community,
I think I'm on to something really here, don't you think? :)

Hello, All!
I am an unabashed fan of all things HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL and of MR. Richard
Boone. I am hoping to complete my collection of the TV episodes within this
year and I was wondering if anyone might have the shows on DVD or VHS for me
to purchase? I am about 80 shows short of owning the entire collection.(I have
picked up all of the J. Dehner OTR shows already) Can anyone steer me in the
right direction, other than Columbia House video/ DVD?
I am also trying to find any OTR show(s) in which Boone appeared. How about
that? Any help in this regard? I am willing to buy or trade for these
items(within [removed] am, as I have so often pointed out, only a poor public

Thanks for any help!

Bhob,
This has always been a dream that I was interested in too. As you imply it
is a tremendous undertaking requiring help from many individuals. It seems
to me that something somewhat primitive could begin such a project and
hopefully, it could bloom from there. But it would require tremendouse
research or lots of effort from various sources to begin to list items by
Radio Play or Radio Series, by actors, etc. Sources such as the book on
Radio Stars, log material, etc., all of which is available. However, there
would also be copyright considerations unless one duplicates research such
as the Radio Stars book, etc.
I fully agree with you that it would be a tremendous resource. However,
imdb has grown with the help of the film industry and other type sponsors
that fund such a project. Where would funding come into a radio
database? Perhaps a subscription base for more detailed info? Would it
bring in sufficient subscribers, etc.
For one to undertake all of this, you can begin to see the scope of such a
project.
However, all that said, one could certainly start a community database with
input allowed by the old time radio community. Data would have to be
checked as best as possible, but perhaps it would be self correcting. I am
not sure how the imdb verifies entries from others. I added material to
their site once for a distant relative who was a film director in the late
20's. I had death info among others and by giving my source, which was
information I had from the daughter of the director, they accepted it.
So how would such a radio database be corrected? All in all, it certainly
seems a worthwhile idea to begin.

I recently picked up some early TV episodes of the television version
of The Lone Ranger. At the end of the shows, in the credits, it notes,
"Adapted from the radio program. Edited by Fran Stryker."
Interesting that some of the stories seem to have been recycled.
Well, the origin story, which was told in a three-part series premier for television, was
certainly adapted from radio version. I don't know of any other specific radio episodes that
were adapted for television, but, of course, the entire format, characters, theme music, etc.
were all adapted from radio.
But I do remember seeing some stories in the Lone Ranger Sunday comic strip that I had
previously heard on the radio.

Subject: Australian Fibber McGee
Hello, I've got an Australian episode of the Fibber McGee and Molly show,
and I'm wondering about it. I only have one, so was this an ongoing series
in Australia just like we had in the States, or was this just a test? The
only person who even sounded Australian was the announcer, who called
himself Reg Wilcox. The actor who played Fibber sounded like someone
changing his voice to sound younger, and the actress who played Molly
sounded much older than our Molly. Any thoughts on this episode or any other
shows in that series? Also, did they even have Johnson's Wax over there in
Australia?
Thanks a lot.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that John Brown, who played Digger
and many other wonderful radio characters, was one of those who had his
career ruind by the blacklisting of the early fifties. If so, it would make
sense that he appeared in the earlier 'Riley' with Jackie Gleason, but not
in the later series with Bendix. I remember seeing him on the Gleason
series, but I didn't remember noticing that he wasn't on the later series. A
sad loss.

I just received my latest CDs from the "World's Greatest Old Time Radio"
company and one of the discs was episodes from the "Archie" series. On the
back of the cover envelope was a picture of the cast at a party of some sort.
Of course or old buddy Hal Stone was prominently featured. My question for
Hal and any others is this, how often were the actors asked or told to make
themselves available for PR shots during the course of a season?
