Subject: Tarzan
Does anyone recall the "Tarzan" series from the
early fifties? I was listening to some eps of it from
1951 last night. Unfortunately, they never mentioned
who the sponsor of the program was at any time during
the program. Does anyone know, or remember, who sponsored
this OTR program?
Another OTR Fan,

Subject: cleaning the heads
As far as the proper solution to clean heads
(head-cleaning solution),
I have heard denatured alcohol is the best (I have
been told this is similar to wood spirits) and this
stuff is highly flammable and needs much ventilation
when using. I have heard isopropyl alcohol is no good
because it dries out the rubber pinch rollers and also
leaves a film on the heads. Teac might sell some
stuff and some may still be available on the open
market, such as eBay. It is called head-cleaning or
something. Several other places offer proper cleaning
liquid, such as Burlington Audio, Kingdom Tapes and
Elecronics and many of the mail order and online
merchants.
The best stuff can also be used on the rubber, without
fear of any side effects.

The acclaimed actress also had a radio career. Goldindex has 16 entries for
her, which include Mercury Theater, Suspense, Studio One and Campbell
Playhouse.
In an obituary in the UK Guardian it says that the Irish-born actress moved
to New York to work with Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater but 'was
quickly signed by Hollywood'
There are numerous obituaries. Just Google Geraldine Fitzgerald then click
the 'news' tab for a broad selection. Here's a link to the one in the

Subject: Art Linkletter at Disneyland's 50th
I too wish I knew why Art Linkletter was not on Larry King Live last Friday
night. He was likely there to talk about his part in helping as one of the
guest speakers on Sunday morning, July 17th at 10 [removed] Pacific time, as
Disneyland in Anaheim, California celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
I was one of the many thousands who were crammed into Walt Disney's original
Magic Kingdom Sunday morning, after my family had planned to be there some
five years ago!! Art looked great and his voice sounded just like it did on
his old radio and TV shows, strong and friendly! And he was also
celebrating his 93rd birthday that day!!
Back on July 17, 1955, Art Linkletter, along with his friends Ronald Reagan
and Bob Cummings helped host the 90-minute live broadcast on ABC-TV of
Disneyland's official opening ceremonies for the press and invited friends
of Mr. Disney. That means Art was 43 at that time, and on giant screen TVs
around Disneyland at 10 [removed], we got to see a few minutes of Art on that
historic telecast 50 years ago. He then walked on stage in front of
Sleeping Beauty's castle to thunderous applause and cheers and spoke about
his part in Disneyland history and his relationship with Walt Disney. It
was fantastic to see this broadcasting legend and
American treasure in person and looking very healthy.

Subject: James Dobson and Parley Baer
Yesterday, our good friend Hal Stone had this to say about James Dobson (not
the actor, but the religious leader).....
"Well, I think it's incredibly ironic. The OTR actor James Dobson who played
"Archie" so briefly was "Gay". This other James Dobson couldn't possibly be
him, much less his son. :)"
Speaking of Irony, This same James Dobson (the religious leader)is the
creator of a new time radio program for the family called Adventures in
Odyesey. Not only that, but Mr. Dobson personaly hired our beloved Parley
Baer to perform in several of the
episodes. Not only did Parley have fond memories of his experance, he was
able to bring other OTR actors into the program to make "guest appearences."
The program is heard is broacast on over 1,000 stations world [removed], the
joy of radio drama.
Best regards,
Mike Ray

Subject: Hollywood Star Playhouse
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
In a message dated 7/19/2005, Andy asked:
A friend of mine is looking for some shows but can
only identify them by title (no date or program name).
Can anyone help?
The answer is: all three are titles of Hollywood Star Playhouse broadcasts.
"Exhbit A" 11-13-1950
"Statement in Full" 1-15-1951
"Calculated Risk" 2-5-1951
These three are a part of a group of 12 broadcasts added to SPERDVAC's
Archives Library. They came from transcriptions lent to SPERDVAC by the
grandson
of the author. I made the digital transfers and really enjoyed the entire
group. They have much of the flavor of Suspense and Escape. If you're a
SPERDVAC member and haven't checked them out from our library yet, give 'em
a try.
I think most radio drama fans will enjoy them.

Subject: You got the scoop
Bob Watson writes:
Oh, and an aside linking both DVD and OTR, Warner Bros has announced
that in Oct. they will release Looney Tunes Vol 3. Besides having the
wonderful voice characterizations of Mel Blanc, the collection is listed as
having, finally, that wonderful cartoon The Mouse that Jack Built, with the
entire cast of the Jack Benny program.
Not at [removed] hadn't mentioned it here, although I did know about it.
Since "Mouse" was basically the first thing in our video library, I wasn't
thinking of it as something new! Thanks for mentioning it.

Folks, didn't the WOR studios at 1440 Broadway,
vacated only this year, go back to the '30s?
From: Hal Stone
In a word, [removed]
Actually, Hal, in a word . . . sorta.
I forget which floors WOR radio inhabited, they might have been the 18th
and 19th. One floor contained the studios, the other contained the
offices. Around 1979 or 1980 they completely refurbished their studios,
but in a rather unusual way. They completely tore apart the office floor
and built their new studios on that floor from scratch. When those were
completed, they moved into the new studios and tore out the old studios and
made that floor over into new offices. So the heritage of their original
studios was lost.
John A. Gambling used to complain that there were no windows in the studio,
so he was cut off from knowing what the weather conditions really were
while he was on the air. To make him happy, when they built the new
studios they built in a little window in his new studio. "Little" being
the operative word. It was something like 4 inches high by 12 inches wide.
The wall was something like 8 or 12 inches thick, so there was not much
that could be seen out that window besides an inkling of whether the sun
was up, whether it was sunny or cloudy, and whether it was raining or
snowing. During that era I occasionally brought a class of my students
from Kentucky to tour NYC broadcasters, and WOR was always on my list. One
year we had seen the old studios, and noted that there still were several
manual typewriters in the newsroom. They had memories of the 1965 power
failure and wanted to make sure they would have some way to type scripts.
The following year we toured the new studios, and although I don't remember
if they still had the manual typewriters, I made a point of asking to see
John Gambling's Window.
The WOR-TV studios were down on the ground floor -- we attended some of Joe
Franklin's shows there -- but I don't know if they ever had been used as
radio studios in the OTR days. The TV station was spun off a while ago
when they were about to have their license revoked, and they built the new
WWOR studio building out in the Jersey swampland, so I don't know if they
had kept the Broadway studios after Joe stopped doing TV.
