Bob was indeed Bings brother and enjoyed success as a band leader and singer
before and after the Benny show. I thought everyrone of those times could see
the resemblance and certainly could hear the very strong similarity of their
speaking and singing voices. The book 2am Eastern Wartime is on sale at
Waldons Bookstore in Colonial Heights , Va. for $[removed] as of yesterday.

Estimating the size of the OTR population will be hard to figure out, but I
know that Yesterday USA on some days are getting around 48,000 hits a day on
its web site, but that number would not include the total numbers of
listeners. I know when I had Jo Stafford on the show on 12-17-00 the
listening numbers for that day was off the charts, and after we let Jo go,
the station receive a telephone call from Brazil. We had a different
tracking system to count hits on the web page back then, than we do now. So
I would say OTR is very much a live on the internet consider that Yahoo rank
the station the third most popular broadcasting site on the internet in the
world behind the BBC, and CNN.

Take care,

Sean Dougherty wrote,
The only main character on the Jack Benny program who was named for the show
was Eddie Anderson's Rochester Van Jones, who was introduced after a guest
shot playing a porter on a train. Legend has it that Benny loved his comic
timing so much he demanded Anderson be written into the show as a regular
character, and it's a pretty plausible legend.

Not knowing the facts of the case, I'd suggest that Jack's
desire to add Eddie to the cast also came about because he
listened to the audience. You can hear that particular show,
and it's obvious that the audience found Eddie hilarious -
though he has relatively few lines, he basically steals the
show with his delivery of them. Great stuff.

Various other characters had character names on the show like Artie
Auerbach's Mr. [removed]

I don't know the full history of Mr. Kitzel, but I do believe that
he came to the Benny show only _after_ he'd done a stint on
Abbott & Costello, & it was while with A&C that he had his
"Pickle in the Middle" hit record.

does anyone know if Bob Crosby was really Bing Crosby's brother,
or was that just a put-on?

Oh, they were brothers, alright. In fact, if you listen closely you can hear
the "Crosby quality" in Bob's voice.

Ian Grieve (From across the "Pond"), just posted

I have a request. Could everybody stop asking Hal Stone, questions. He is
not a young man anymore and we need to allow him to finish his book.

Thanks, awfully, old chap. Your solicitous concern for my advancing years,
and concern for the time it takes for my decrepit fingers to answer Digest
questions, touches my heart, dontcha know! But would you deprive an "Old
Man" his only source of fun? ...(Alas, They refuse to refill my Viagra
prescription).

I suppose Charlie could always ban him, but then Charlie will lose the
opportunity to win free drinks.

You can bet your "bleeding" life on that.

I thought the request had better come from me as I live further away than
most of you and he is less likely to 'rock' my roof, plus we don't have
Maceys :)

What in heavens name do you think they make intercontinental missiles for,
you "Fish and Chips" junkie?

By the way, speaking of Viagra, I have a fun (but totally true) story about
the drug, and it concerns a countryman of yours, Ian.

My closest friend who lives in Florida has a Cousin who is a British
citizen. They are quite close, and are in contact with each other often.
It seems that the drug in question is even more expensive in Jolly Olde
England, and my friends Cousin asked if he could send him a few pills by
mail over there so he could try it.

My friend, being somewhat of a practical joker, sent some innocuous and
harmless capsules to his cousin. A few weeks later, He received a frantic
phone call from England. The British Cousin was beside himself with glee,
and wanted my Buddy to smuggle a years supply over to him.

Ta Ta, and all that Rot! And as they say in your Country; "Keep a stiff

Subject: Did they or didn't they?

In speaking about a film shown called "Chasing Amy" Michael quotes;

The Lexington Herald Leader published this capsule review:
"Romantic comedy about people who write comic books for a living and
whose most passionate conversations can center on the sex lives of
Archie and Jughead."

How about it, Hal? Do you and/or Bob Hastings have any secrets to tell
us? Hi'ya Archikins! What's the REAL inside info on Betty and
Veronica.

Do "gentlemen" really discuss these things? (Of course they do, if they want
to sell books). You'll just have to be patient.

But as for any hanky panky going on between cast members of the Archie Show,
the answer is a resounding NO! For one thing, I was about 3 or 4 years
younger than the "Girls", and although we were fond of each other, I was
definitely too young for them to be considered "date-Bait". And Bobby had a
long time lovely girlfriend (Joan) who he married during the run of the
program, and would often bring his child in for visits with the cast.

But the niece of one of the Shows Director's was another story. As was many
of the teenage fans that came to see the show. And when I got much older,
Even Divorced "Mom's" that would bring their kids in to see the program
presented some interesting educational diversions.

"Betty" and "Veronica" had a "social life" outside the studio. (And frankly,
it's none of your business, you obvious sex maniac!) :)

Hang in there Michael. My book will be a tell all that will hopefully
satisfy your prurient interests. :)

Some friends of mine and I were discussing Irish tenors (and Irish
vocalists in general) on oldtime radio, and the name of Morton Downey Sr.
came up. I was curious as to what the general perception of him was-- I
mean, we today know his controversial talk show host son (who recently
died); but I was wondering, out of the many Irish singers on radio during
the Golden Age of radio, was he one of the most popular? Also, in
Dunning's book, it lists the shows Downey did on the network, but there is
a gap from about 1940 to 1943. I know he made some movies around that
time, but did he stop performing on radio for a couple of years?

A friend is writing a book on Bebe Daniels and I have been trying to help

Timothy and Penny. Richard will be around 66 years old and after his radio

an antique shop in London.

If anyone has any help or advice to offer, I'd be grateful. My friend is in

On Mon, 23 Jul 2001 Ian Grieve responded to Jack Harris' message re missing
episodes of MAGIC ISLAND:

I found what I believe to be the two missing ones using this method and
Jerry H has offered his assistance to help me by supplying me with the two
that I think are the culprits.

What caused this to happen? Well my theory and it is just a theory, is
that somewhere along the line, when somebody has put up to 5 episodes
together for some reason into a single .mp3 file, these can be found all
over ftp sites and in the usual places, they have made a mistake and this
has simply carried forward.

I, too, have 128 episodes. I acquired mine long before mp3's began. I've had
them for at least 18 years so the problem already existed back then. After
reading your post, I dug out my notes. I had listened to the entire series
as I put it in my collection. I have a note to myself that there was
something missing between episodes 11 and 12. You didn't mention where you
thought the problem was. Is that where you noticed it, too?

I might as well put in my two cents on this issue. I agree, that
there were several heroes on OTR. Every crime and mystery
show had one. Under the broadest interpretation of the term,
you could say that "The Shadow", "Superman", "Batman", "Green
Hornet", "Lone Ranger", "The Saint", "Jack Armstrong, the All-
American Boy", "Chandu, the Magician", and others would fit the
bill. Each was willing to place himself in danger in order to help
someone else. This, IMHO, would qualify anyone as a hero.

As far super heroes go (those with special powers), the only ones
which automatically spring to mind are "The Shadow" (invisibility)
"Superman" (super strength, among others), "Chandu" (didn't he
use a magic crystal somehow?), among others. I'm surprised
that no one has thought to mention "Blackstone, the Magic Detective"
in their lists. I believe he was a magician who became a detective.
He used his ability as a magician to capture criminals. Magic, in and
of itself, is a special power. Right? Wouldn't this qualify him, using
the
'special powers' paradigm, as a super hero?

One challenge to everyone out there. Who, in your humble opinions,
was the best detective? Don't forget those female detectives. We
have to be PC (politically correct). Some of mine include: Ellery Queen,

Jack Packard et al ("I Love A Mystery"), "Candy Matson", Joe Friday
("Dragnet"), Nick Carter, Chick Carter, Frank Merriwell, Nero Wolfe,
Philip Marlowe, and Sam Spade. This is just of the top of my head. Can
anyone provide me with their favorites?

"Blue coal" is anthracite sprayed with a supension of finely divided

This is a reference to one of the most bizarre incidents in American
political history -- the so-called "Three Governors Affair" of 1946-47,
in which three men all claimed to be Governor of Georgia at the same
time, and the state was thrown into comic-opera political turmoil.

This is a fascinating story. Thank you for telling it. I've been
wondering about that reference for years.

I would have thought that if the governor elect died, the lieutenant
governor elect would take over. The U. S. Constitution contains such a
provision in the case of a President elect dying before inauguration day.

I have a video of Ellis Arnall appearing as a contestant on "You Bet Your
Life." I believe he also ran for governor again, as an independent, in
1966. That was when segregationist Lester Maddox was the Democratic
candidate, and the more liberal Republican candidate, Bo Calloway, got the
most votes. But with Arnall in the race, no candidate got a majority.
Under the Georgia constitution, that meant that the Legislature was to
elect a governor, and the Democratic-controlled legislature elected
Maddox. Since the Georgia constitution prevented a governor from serving
more than one term in succession, Maddox couldn't run again in 1970. He
ran instead for lieutenant governor and was succeeded as governor by Jimmy
Carter.

My favorite piece of trivia regarding Harry Bartell's TV career is that he
was the very first victim of Dr. Miguelito Loveless in the "Wild Wild West"
episode, "The Night the Wizard Shook the Earth," the diminutive villain's
initial appearance.

As to Bob Crosby, he was indeed Bing's brother. And in the episode in which
he is solicited by Jack to replace Phil Harris, his young daughter Mary is
heard. Of course, Mary grew up to shoot [removed] Ewing!!!

[ADMINISTRIVIA: Although I haven't finished putting together the "Radio Stars
on TV" section of The Nostalgia Pages, I can point you to a few pics of Mr.
Bartell on "The Wild Wild West," including one of the last photos of
Professor Neilsen before his demise at the hands of Dr. Loveless. See:

Now, any of you are asking, "Ryan, do we care about such things?" Possibly
not, but this is the only place I can write about such things and hope to
have some kind of audience. My friends sure don't care.

Ryan, thanks for the analysis. I have most of the shows you refer to.
I'll be paying a little closer attention to the writing styles. It's
always interesting to observe how different people perceive and
recreate a character while still retaining his or her basic identity.

... and BTW, I'll bet many of us identify with you regarding friends'
attitudes toward our slightly goofy interest.
