Subject: Network Backup

Recently someone posted that the networks used shortwave broadcasting as
backups for the telco network. Not so! [removed];T. handled the transmission
of network programs and had plenty of spare lines for backup purposes.

When I first joined the technical staff of CBS-NY in December of 1944, I
was assigned to the shortwave studios. We had two transmitter sites. One
at Brentwood (?), Long Island (probably the former listening post) and
another at Wayne, N. J. (the former site of the AM station, WABC,(later
WCBS) which had moved to Pea Island in Long Island Sound. There were five
transmitters, two at one site, and three at the other.

We had two missions. One was broadcasting news in various foreign
languages beamed to Europe. We had an excellent staff of foreign language
announcers. (the big problem was that we kept losing them because the FBI
was picking them up as spies).

The other mission was that CBS formed a PanAmerican network, feeding
entertainment in Spanish and Portuguese to South Americaan stations. A
very distinguished gentleman, John Hundley, was the brain of that
venture. We had a fine musical staff. Alfredo Antonini was our
conductor. Nester Mester Charis and Elsa Miranda (Chaquita Banana) were
vocalists. Also Los Panchos, a trio. We also inserted Spanish and
Portuguese announcements into recorded network shows such as "Luck Strike
Hit Parade".

There was also a short wave installation in San Francisco which beamed to
the West and Asia. I do not have knowledge of that operation. All our
European feeds went through the [removed] master control in New York and
back to us.

It was an interesting era!

Subject: Longest Running Role on Radio

Bob Hastings is a wonderful actor that spent considerable time in roles on
both radio and that other medium. Bob is also a friend to most of us that
have attended the OTR conventions where he has worked his magic. However,
he has often pointed out that it's his brother Don, also an actor, that has
received a steady paycheck all these years. To emphasize that point, a
recent newspaper item advised that Helen Wagoner, 82, holds the record for
the longest-running role on TV. She has been Nancy on "As The World Turns"
since its debut 45 years ago. Bob's brother Don Hastings and co-star Eileen
Fulton were next with 41 years each on the same soap as Bob and Lisa. Now
that's steady work.

With that said, what about are favorite form of entertainment? Who has had
the longest-running roles in radio? Lets say the first five or, for the
astute, maybe the first ten? I suspect that Father and Mother Barbour on
"One Man's Family", plus Virginia "Ma Perkins" Payne are all right up there.
What do you think??? Happy Listening, Fritz

Subject: OTR on Vinyl

Hi, Folks.

In my basement right now, I've got nearly 250 vinyl LP's of old time radio
programs. Unfortunately, many of them are doing me little good, since I don't
know what's on them. In the mid 1970's, with the OTR "revival," several
record labels were formed to re-issue OTR shows on 12" vinyl LP's for home
use: Memorabilia, Radiola, Mark 56, Nostalgia Lane, and Golden Age come to
mind first. Thousands of records were produced, but unfortunately, except
for Radiola, most rarely printed anything but the series title on their LP's.
So I've got several stacks of *good* OTR, but I hardly know what's there,
other than series titles.

Some of the time, these LP's offer the highest-fidelity recordings available
of OTR shows (I've got a couple of "The Shadow" broadcasts on LP with
stunningly clean sound quality) and so may be of some use yet, even with the
takeover of cassettes and MP3.

I'm wondering if there are any others on this list who have OTR LP's who
would be interested in helping me start a web page cataloging and dating
these LP's. I've gone through some of my LP's and spent time listening and
looking up in OTR logs to determine broadcast dates, episode titles, etc. Has
any one else done this? Got any info to swap? I'd like to start some sort of
online OTR LP "discography," and I can do all the web work, I just need some
help compiling the info.

I'd like to set it up as follows (or something like this):
Record label
Record number
Series
Episode Title
Broadcast Date
Complete? Yes / No (were commercials omitted?)

Please contact me directly if you can help---even if you only have
information to one LP! Every little bit counts. Or perhaps such a discography
already exists [removed]

Subject: CBS Correspondent - Cecil Brown

Was wandering the shelves of a Half-Priced book store the other day and
found a journal written by Cecil Brown, one of Ed Morrow's Boys at CBS radio
during WWII. The booked called, "Suez to Singapore" was published in 1943
after Mr. Brown traveled from Italy through the middle east and on through
India and Singapore just after Pearl Harbor. One of the key gripes the
correspondents had in N. Africa was the very restrictive censorship the
British imposed on them. Have not finished it yet, but extremely interesting
for an old history buff. Got the hard cover book for $[removed] His name
appeared as listed in your web site and now I wonder if you might have an
old recording of him from one of his overseas broadcasts. Found otherwise
that he lived from 1917 till 1987/8 on the web.

My Dad was in the Navy in Pacific from 42-45 and after the war while going
to school at TCU in Ft. Worth became a news broadcaster reporter on a couple
of small local radio stations, one called KFJZ. Upon a visit over there last
year for a convention accidently went by the original old station that is
still in use. Later he graduated as a school teacher and retired 30 years
later as a high school principal. All interesting connections. We lost him
about 1 1/2 years ago - one of the greatest generation.

A few digests back, someone wondered why re-creation groups would do all the

The answer is simple: The old standards are what audiences want! And they
are paying the bills for the shows we do.

We enjoy reading other scripts within the group, but they just don't sell

Ryan Osentowski wrote:

"am I the only person who feels the program is a bit overrated?"

Surely not the ONLY person, but I'll bet you're in the minority. Suspense
is probably my favorite dramatic series. I agree that The Whistler is a
great show, with interesting twists and turns, but I have to disagree with
Ivan, who wrote that The Whistler was superior, and that Suspense sometimes
seemed gimmicky. If anything, it's The Whistler's surprise endings that
seem formulaic to me.

Suspense clearly had its periods of strengths and weaknesses. Many people
love the "true" adaptations of the early 50s, when Elliot Lewis was
producing, but I dislike those intensely. I tend to prefer the star vehicles
of the 40's, but then again I'm predisposed to like classic Hollywood movies
as well, so maybe that accounts for a difference. So put me in the
Suspense-yes! column, please.

**Just to show that not everything suits everybody, I have an affection, but
not a PASSION, for I Love a Mystery, which seems to be a universal favorite
among OTR fans. I love the excitement, the characters, the mood, the
atmosphere ... but the stories seem dialogue-heavy and repetitive (and I'm
not talking about the "edited" versions floating around, either).
