Subject: Re: Old Song Question
Ron Vickery writes:
One show I recorded (I've since lost the tape) had a song on it from "a
long time ago" (according to the good Dr.) entitled "I've Got A Cold In My
Nose". The only reference I can find on the internet sent me to two sites
(IMDB and the Big Cartoon Database) listing it as being sung by Betty Boop
(Mae Questel) in a cartoon called Betty Boop's Ker-Choo from 1933. According
to these sites, it was written by Scott Bradley, with lyrics by Joseph
Hanna. However, the version I remember didn't sound like Betty Boop to me
(however, my memory may be wrong).
This song was, I believe, first introduced on stage by Fanny Brice and may
well have been recorded by her as well. (Dr. Demento's collection of 78s has
always been impressive, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if this was the
version he played.) The song was also performed by Barbra Streisand in the
Brice bio-pic "Funny Lady" (1975), which was a sequel to "Funny Girl"
(1968). Her performance is on the soundtrack album for the film, which
should make it fairly easy to find.

On the subject of what we "see" while we're listening to a radio drama -- I
was startled once when listening to an old Australian serial in which the
hero was a dashing man about town, and a policeman in the story described
him to a third party as wearing "a blue pin-strip suit and brown suede
shoes". Not my image of the hero at all!

Subject: Crisco For Spry
Melanie Aultman wrote
Today someone asked me ( in the context of cookbooks) if I knew what Spry
was. I said I did (thanks to OTR). Turns out she had an old cookbook and
didn't think she could complete the recipe because she wasn't familiar
with
Spry. I have printed a page from the internet about Spry's sponsorship of
Aunt Jenny for her.
I assume that if the old recipe says Spry, you can simple substitute Crisco,
which is still available. I don't think Spry is around anymore. Or is it?
Anyway, who wants to live so nutritionally dangerously as to want all that
hydrogenated fat?

Subject: Independence Day Programs
Hi,
I was told that someone wanted to know what programs had
Independence Day themes. I have included below a list taken from our
database that I have verified carry that theme. I'm sure there are probably
many more, but these are all that I have been able to verify. If any of you
know of any others, please let me know so I may tag those programs in our
database.
Take care,

TWO CENTS PLAIN:
Kermyt Anderson recently wrote about the "Stan [removed]" sketch in
which :
Queen Isabella, extolling the virtues of the New World,
when she uses the phrase "with purple mountain majesties above the two
cents plain". <snip>
I had never known what the phrase "two cents plain" meant. It took me
nearly 30 years to get the joke!
There's the Spike Jones version of the old favourite "Yes, We Have No
Bananas"
in which various members of Jones's City Slickers render the song via comic
dialects including Italian, upper-class British, and Yiddish. In the latter
verse,
the Jewish store proprietor singing about not having bananans does offer
"We have delicious knishes and kosher champagne//the kosher champagne is
'two cents plain.'" I'm not sure which Slicker sang this. My guess would be
Joel Grey's father Mickey Katz, but I'd probably be wrong. Maybe there's a
"young" Spike Jones expert here in the ether who might shed some light
hereupon.
YOU KNOW YOU'RE TOO IMMERSED IN THE OTR HOBBY [removed]
...you mishear things in an OTR vein.
When Martin Grams was in town ([removed], NYC) a couple of weeks ago, he & I were
talking,
at one point, about a portable DVD player he owned, in which he referred to
the
"jacks in back" of said device. I said, "Oh, 'jacks in the back.' For a
moment, I thought
you said 'Jackson Beck.'"
SPEAKING, somewhat, OF "SUPERMAN"...
I saw a review of the new "Superman Returns" movie in the current issue (June
19-25, 2006)
of "Variety," and fans of the old 1950s TV version will be pleased to know
that both
Jack "Jimmy Olsen" Larson and Noel "Lois Lane" Neill have small parts in which
they
play, respectively, "Bo the Bartender" and "Gertrude Vanderworth." Honestly,
when I had
heard last year about Frank Langella playing Perry White, I was a bit
skeptical --until I saw
him play CBS prez William Paley in the Murrow film. Other veterans in the cast
include James
Karen (the guy who used to do the Pathmark supermarket TV ads a lifetime ago
here in NYC),
Eva Marie Saint as Martha/Ma Kent, and leftover footage from the first two
1970s Superman
movies of Marlon Brando as Jor-El. How do you like that? Mr. Brando and Ms.
Saint from "On
the Waterfront" are finally in another movie [removed] Brando's been dead
for two years!
That's about the size of it--

Subject: Soap opera queen dies
Another of our last living links with radio soap opera, one
of the legends of the form, has died. Vivian Smolen, the
heroine of CBS's Our Gal Sunday in its last 13 years on the
air (1946-59), and the equally beleaguered Laurel "Lolly
Baby" Grosvenor, daughter of NBC's Stella Dallas (ca. mid
1940s-1955), passed at 90 on June 11 in Lake Worth, Fla. I
am indebted to Irene Heinstein for sharing this with me.
Vivian was born to a couple of immigrants in New York City
in early 1916. Her mom hailed from Austria, her dad from
Russia. He was a musician but -- by the time she was making
a serious living in radio -- she, their only child, had
become the primary caregiver to her aging parents and still
lived with them. Meanwhile, after getting a start on the
Children's Hour on WJZ as a youngster, Vivian grew up with
radio. By 1939 she landed a part on CBS's Doc Barclay's
Daughters. She was a regular at the same web's Stage Door
Canteen (1942-45). In addition to the other soap opera work
she won, she gained a spot on NBC's Front Page Farrell
and -- for much of the run of Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost
Persons -- between 1946-55 she turned up frequently as a
victim, suspect or murderer in those weekly installments.
Less than a month before her last series (Our Gal Sunday)
was canceled on Jan. 2, 1959, at 42 Vivian found personal
happiness as she wed Harold Klein, a film executive at ABC,
later with Plitt Theaters. They lived in Chicago for a
while before retiring in the Palm Beach area in the 1980s.
She revealed a good bit of information to me about life as a
soap opera queen, with some important insights about her
time in the Hummert organization that I never would have
gotten anywhere else. She was a modest woman and never
played up her own accomplishments.
Regrettably, Vivian was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in the
late 1990s. It was a slow, insidious disease that seemed to
leave her memory clear from many years ago, yet had a
devastating effect on short-term power. After Harold died
in May 2001 her world literally collapsed. Having no
children, no parents and no siblings, and only some distant
relatives of Harold, she felt exceedingly alone. She told
me that he had made "provisions" so she would be adequately
cared for the rest of her life -- there was a paid person to
fix her meals at their condo, make purchases, do the
cleaning, pay her bills, keep her checkbook balanced,
etc. -- but she felt very alone and sad. The last time we
talked, she cried throughout the hour we were on the phone.
A couple or three years ago I asked readers of the digest
who cared to communicate with her. A few thanked me and
said they were doing that. I felt it was important that
somebody let her know her radio contributions were still
meaningful to some of us.
Apparently there were few who knew of her passing, or even
knew who she was, when she died last week. Without checking
I believe that there may now be just one such legend still
living -- a soap opera queen of a major radio series who was
the sole heroine for a durable period of time (not shows
where several women played major roles simultaneously).
That would be Teri Keane, The Second Mrs. Burton. While I
can't say that unequivocally, I think that may be right.
Teri, now 80, could be with us for a while, I am hopeful.
She often appears at the Newark events. Ironically, she
presided over the very last daytime serial chronologically
to leave the air on the fateful day it all died, Nov. 25,
1960.
