Subject: Heavenly Days

I read the threads on the Fibber, and Molly book, Heavenly Days, and it
jogged my memory, so, I went on a hunt in the house for my copy. I knew I had
one, but had lost track of it. I finally found it, and found I had paid
$[removed] for my copy, whenever it was I bought it. I honestly cannot recall
where I bought it, but I think it was at an antique store, or possibly a
rummage sale. Any way. I am impressed with the photo's, and the history of
the
couple.

One thing I am puzzled about though. When it talks of Molly's illness, it
does not really explain what actually was wrong with her. Was it physical,
or, mental? I have heard stories that it was a problem with alcohol, and if
that's true, I can understand why it was not disclosed that that is what
her problem was. Back then, any substance abuse was kept at home. It carried
a social stigmatism at that time, unlike today where the great, and the
elite, check themselves in and out of rehab centers, and it seems to carry
some sort of badge of respectability. It seems to further enhance their
popularity. They seem proud of the fact that they cannot control their
lives. I
can tell you from first hand experience, having one of my best friends
father being an alcoholic. It was certainly not something he went around
bragging about, and to be honest, his friends never knew about it. Today it
seems,
if we air our dirty laundry, it serves to raise our popularity because of
the ink time we get as a result. We love the "Bad Boy/Bad Girl" image.
Well. Some people do at any rate.

Being the time period when Molly was "ill," if it was indeed a problem with
alcohol, drugs, or a mental problem, it would have been kept very quiet
out of respect for the family. Times are very different now.

Any way. It's a great book. Glad I found it again.

Subject: re: 1937 Radio Question

Martin Grams, Jr. <mmargrajr@[removed]; wondered whether wire taps were
legal in 1937. I confess I don't know the answer (might even have varied from
state to state, or for Federal versus local authorities?). But he identifies
this action as being done by a "crime fighter." Martin, was this a police
officer, a licensed private eye, or an amateur detective? What show was it
from?

It wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't a legal action, at least not as depicted
in the show. If you pay attention you'll find laws being flouted right and
left on detective series. Breaking and entering is probably the most common.
Also obstruction of evidence and withholding evidence. (How many times have
you heard an amateur detective or private eye tamper with a crime scene
before the police arrive?) Sometimes you'll hear people impersonating a
police officer--also a serious offense, I believe.

Every so often you'll hear a PI refuse to do something like that because it's
illegal, or would put him in bad with the authorities, but that's rare. On
radio crime dramas, the ends definitely justified the means, and laws were
frequently bent and broken.

Subject: Rhine ESP Zenith radio show

I just found an interesting auction on that site that shall remain unnamed.

It's a set of Zener ESP cards from Duke University's Rhine Research Center.

What makes these unusual is that they're marked "Compliments of Your
Zenith Dealer" and include the Duke University and Zenith logos on the
back.

Rhine, if you don't know, was the first scholar to make headlines by doing
research on ESP and parapsychology. He developed a set of cards that
became a standard for ESP testing (you may have seen them - they have wavy
lines, a star, a square, etc on them). The reactions to Rhine's research
was, shall we say, mixed in the academic community. The Center still
exists, but is no longer affiliated with Duke.

Now, back to the cards in question.

I did some digging and found in a dissertation from the University of
Texas at Austin that Rhine first published a book about his research in
1937 and there were articles about him in "Life" magazine. That Fall,
Zenith sponsored a radio series about Rhine's work that included giveaways
of the ESP testing card deck and experiments in ESP via radio.

Anyone run into this show? What's the proper name? Any episodes survive?

The dissertation, btw, is "Wonder Shows: Science, Religion and Magic on
the American Stage, 1845-2001" by Fred Robert Nadis. According to Nadis,
Dunninger the Mentalist looked at Rhine as a "showbiz competitor" and
Rhine's series paved the way for Dunninger's own radio show in the early
40s.

As an interesting sidenote, Dunning mentions that "Dunninger The
Mentalist" was a summer replacement for "Amos N' Andy" sponsored by Rinso
at one point. Seems like an odd choice to replace "Amos N' Andy" during

Subject: RS Hornet

Kermyt Anderson asked about the quality of the new Radio Spirits Green Hornet
collection.

I received it yesterday (the new Shadow set is backordered).

All episodes are from 1944 and I only recognized 3 of the 20 shows as being
in my collection, with maybe two more as possible dupes. The rest are unknown
to me, at least by title.

I didn't have much time to mess with it, but I did load discs 10, 9, and 8
into my iPod, and did listen to one episode, the Flames of Wrath, last night.
The show was complete with wartime PSAs, and the sound was loud and clear,
with no background or disc noise.

My wife, who has occasionally suffered through many darned near unusable
radio shows over the past 25 years, commented how clear the show was.

List contributor Martin Grams wrote an intro booklet that answered, for me,
why Mike Axford was remarked as not being in town in some episodes, then his
return to the show.

Even more exciting was the notation that Grams has a 700-page history of the
Hornet in all formats (radio, TV, movies, print) coming out in 2010. I'm
guessing as a tie-in with the upcoming Hornet movie.

Mr. Grams, my credit card is standing by!

I won't be posting an episode by episode critique, but give me a few more
days to listen and I'd be glad to answer any personal e-mails.

Regards,

Bob Keller

Subject: Re: 16in-or reel decks

hi;
to all that respnded, and thanks, there were many, one person took all,
about 50 or 60.
here is another deal just in case, i have 2 reel decks
1 teac, i akai for pkg and shipping only, but as someone said, sometimes
there is a fly in the ointment.
and that is, they may need tune ups, i haven't used them
in a number of years, as i don't have reels anymore, i gave them away. but
if you or someone you know is knowledgeable about decks, you have a good
deal. going
