Subject: War of the Worlds

Amazing how this one single radio broadcast still stirs up discussion and
debate after more than 70 years. It's also amazing how references to War of
the Worlds pop up all over the place, if you keep your eyes open. For
example, I just read Action Comics #442 (1974), which features a six page
backup story starring the Atom. In the story, the Atom is thrown back in time
to Grover's Milly, New Jersey, on Oct 30 1938, where he emerges in the midst
of the panic and is even mistaken for a Martian invader! Only later does he
realize that this is "the night Orson Welles' historic 'War of the Worlds'
radio-broadcast panicked half the country!"

Also, just today I listened to a BBC radio broadcast from a couple of weeks
back, "Mitch Benn's Wondrous Stories", which is about classic symphonic
progressive rock concept albums in the 1970s. The programme culminates in a
discussion of "The War of the Worlds", narrated by Richard Burton, with a
passing reference made to the Orson Welles broadcast.

Subject: lost Lone Ranger episodes

Continuing from last month, here is the remaining list of unaccounted LONE
RANGER recordings. If anyone has any of these, please let me know. Last month
three people sent me recordings and with the exception of two, the rest were
pre-existing shows with incorrect titles and dates. For this reason, anyone
who has any recordings on the list, I will need to have them verified with
the original RANGER scripts, which is what was done for the previous
submissions.

Of the 8 episodes submitted last, only two were truly "lost" or
"unaccounted," but that's at least two more we can scratch off the list.

Subject: Donald Bashor interview

The February 27, 1958 broadcast of television's PLAYHOUSE 90 offered a unique
perspective of the actual story of Donald Bashor, a compulsive killer who
died by the cyanide pellet. The Leslie Stevens teleplay was based on recorded
interviews with Bashor, which was apparently broadcast over CBS radio. While
in the death house at San Quentin, Bashor gave out an interview which was
taped for broadcast over the CBS radio network. It occasioned considerable
comment and was repeated again. Before watching the TV episode, I would like
to review the recoding. Does anyone know where I can acquire a copy of that
radio broadcast or taped interview?

Subject: Bing Crosby Kraft Music Hall

The Bing Crosby "Kraft Music Hall" episode that XM satellite played
this week, which was from April 5, 1945, was particularly good. I was
in my car when I first heard it on Sunday night, and made a point to
listen to the rebroadcast tonight, but -- unfortunately -- I tuned in
too late to hear all of it. I was wondering if any OTR fan might have
this episode that I could acquire? (It also featured Nat Cole as
guest star). A song in particular I am trying to get is Bing's live
version of "You Belong To My Heart." Please email me at
midtod@[removed] if you can help. Thanks!

From: LBiel <[removed]@[removed];

It did happen that NBC lost Bing Crosby to ABC because ABC was
willing to let him pre-record AND EDIT his program in 1946.

And Groucho Marx was the beneficiary of Bing's deal with ABC, as
described in director Robert Dwan's recent book, "As Long As They're
Laughing." As soon as You Bet Your Life's debut on ABC was a done
deal, its producer, John Guidel, began talking with ABC about re-
recording the program. Guidel wanted to run long and edit to make a
more interesting program -- as had been done with the pilot
transcription. According to his son Arthur, Groucho preferred a pre-
recorded program so that he could feel free to ad lib without having
to worry about whether what he said was fit for broadcast.

When Ampex brought out magnetic tape, Bing Crosby told ABC they
should buy tape equipment. When ABC expressed concern about the
financial stability of Ampex, Crosby wrote a check for $50,000 to
Ampex (I assume he bought stock or something). ABC got tape
equipment for Crosby and, at the same time, got it for You Bet Your
Life.

Subject: Looking for Meet the Press

Hi all,

I am looking for a few sample episodes of the radio version of Meet the
Press from the 1940s to the 1960s. I found a podcast of the latest episode
and links to Goldin and others who have them, but no audio of any early
shows. I have an opportunity to get an almost complete run of them through
the middle 1960s and I am trying to decide if it's a series that I'm
interested in or not. I would prefer mp3 if anyone has a few shows from the
early years that they would be willing to share. I am not interested in the
TV version, only the audio or an audio aircheck. I can provide an ftp
upload account or I can get it from the web. If you have anything, please
contact me. Thanks very much.
