Subject: Great Gildersleeve

Steve Salaba commented that he saw Harold Peary as a guest on THE ADDAMS
FAMILY, but was not doing his Gildy voice.

Small bit of trivia: After Willard Waterman took over the role for the radio
series, AND after Waterman was doing the role on the short-run syndicated
television series, Peary was instructed (on a legal basis) not to play any
characters or display any characterization that might resemble the character
of Gildersleeve. This is why in early films like ROAD TO VICTORY, Peary does
the Gildy laugh even though he's not Gildy, and in episodes of THE ADDAMS
FAMILY and FIBBER McGEE AND MOLLY, he isn't playing anything remotely similar
to the character of Gildersleeve.

Subject: Did Shari Lewis Ever Do Radio?

A couple of we radio buffs were actually talking about this, this
afternoon--

And, kind of a nice piece by me, I think (scroll down), on the current
whereabouts of Lambchop, over at Mark Evanier's nifty website:

[removed]

(Incidentally, for years, later, Lewis did a show in Vegas, and
conducted symphony [removed] She was more than multi-talkented, so,
in this case, asking if a ventriloquist did radio, is not a silly
question!)

<And, no, that is not a photo, of [removed];

;-)

Subject: Dr. Sam Hawthorne

I, Jim Harmon, played the Watsonian sidekick, Sheriff Lens, of Dr. Sam
Hawthorne in all the new radio dramas done of the medical sleuth produced by
Dave Amaral, about 1976 to 1978. The good doctor was portrayed by the late
Richard Gulla, who had been in the last few years of radio drama coming out
of Chicago. Dave Ameral did some of the show in the Los Angeles area and some
up in the San Francisco area at the NBC radio station where he worked. He
would then edit scenes together to form a whole presentation. Sometimes two
characters in one scene would never meet in real life, but would be edited
together on tape.

I know Dave used professional talent from both areas, plus some dedicated
amateurs. Many of these people I did not know personally, and I can't recall
their names after thirty years. One pro from the Bay Area was Dianne Smythem.
(I hope I am spelling her name correctly.) She did a number of prominent
female characters. My wife, Barbara Harmon, played several smaller roles.
Dave's good friend, Lloyd Nesbitt, provided technical support and played some
characters. The whole thing was picked up here and there, and Dave's goal was
to produce a whole series of 13 half-hour episodes. He succeeded in that.
All were based on Edward D. Hoch's stories of Dr. Sam in Ellery Queen's
Mystery Magazine, with the permission of the author. I believe Dave Amaral
did all the adaptations. I know I did no scripting myself. I believe the
series was broadcast over the Hospital Network for the benefit of patients,
especially sightless ones. I always hoped Dave might be able to sell the show
somewhere. The commercials in the show were placed there just to give it the
impression of a commercial network show. Of course, I would have liked to be
paid, but it was such a worthy effort I would have liked to have had it have
a wider audience. As it is, the show lives on in the collections of many
fans. -- JIM HARMON

Subject: MP3 old-time radio player

Because I am a member of some Best Buy Rewards program, I just received a
coupon for $15 off any Samsung MP3 player. Since I don't need any additional
MP3 player in my house, and it's not a $5 or $10 coupon ($15 bucks is $15),
if anyone has a use for the coupon, let me know and I'll mail it to them. I
use my laptop and my DVD player to play MP3s, so I don't need any stand-alone
MP3 player but someone on this digest may.
