Subject: Roma Wine history
Here is a link to an oral history transcript by a man who was connected with
Roma Wines, under its various owners, for many years.
For "the rest of the story" after he retired, we'll have to look elsewhere.
Scroll down to the Index at the end of the transcript for specific pages related
to Roma.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Charles Stark
Joe Martelle's query about Charles Stark (no, I don't have an answer to his
Gene Autry question) reminded me of an odd fact about the man's career which
I had come across in my research.
Shortly before Stark had moved (professionally) from Philadelphia to New York
in the late Thirites, he hosted a brief--extremely brief--horror series on a
Philly station. The title of the show was (I kid you not) STARK [removed] I
recall, it only lasted three episodes.

Subject: Bravo, Don Hastings!
All right, I admit I've never watched "As the World Turns" and thus did not
know
the plot-lines that were tied up when I did tune in to watch the last
programme
yesterday (17th). But it was good to see that long-time AWTW veteran and OTR
actor Don Hastings' character Dr. Robert Hughes was given the privilege of
delivering the show's final line after it's remarkable 54-year run of almost
14,000 episodes. The framing device for the final episode had Dr.
Hughes retiring his practice and reminiscing about his half-century of
dealings
with the residents of Oakdale, Illinois. At the end, he packed up a few
belongings and as he approached his office's door, he turned and said "Good
night" to both his office and, by extension, the viewing audience. Upon
Hastings' leaving, the lighted globe in the center of the room began spinning
and since we, the audience, didn't get to see it stop, it's safe to assume
it's
still turning like the planet it represents.
And thus another connection to OTR has been swept away. Soap factory
powerhouse
Irna Phillips created ATWT in 1956 and now it seems another link to the
serials
of the OTR era has passed, to borrow a turn of phrase from another recently
departed daytime drama, "like sands through the hourglass."
Rest assured, everybody, that though I've never known life without "As the
World
Turns" being on the air, things are going to be OK.
Yours always in the ether,
Derek Tague
[ADMINISTRIVIA: Two comments from someone who watched ATWT in the late
50s/early 60s because his mother watched ATWT religiously (I even remember
Santos Ortega as Grandpa); Bob Hughes' final line was a bookend to his
mother's opening line. The first line spoken on the show, by the late great
Helen Wagner as Nancy Hughes, was "Good Morning, Dear." And it should be
mentioned that Don Hastings is the brother of Bob Hastings, best known around
this hobby as Archie Andrews and frequent guest to the various OTR
conventions around the country.
The final episode of this washday opus is available for viewing, legally or
not I couldn't say, on YouTube. It's also on the CBS website, although it's
unlikely to last long there. --cfs3]

From Those Were The Days
9/19
It was just an average day this day in 1932, when Just Plain Bill was
first heard on CBS. It was "The real life story of people just like
people we all know." The 15 minute show (Monday through Friday at 7:15
[removed]) was all about (just plain) Bill Davidson and his daughter, Nancy,
who lived in (just plain) Hartville. Since Bill was the town barber,
everybody came to him with their problems and Bill helped them
straighten things out.
Instead of playing the usual organ, as a first, Hal Brown played
harmonica and whistled the Just Plain Bill introduction music (Darling
Nellie Gray). Hal also handled the closing theme (Polly Wolly Doodle) in
the same manner.
The show, created by Frank and Anne Hummert, who also came up with Mr.
Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons, Little Orphan Annie, Amanda of Honeymoon
Hill, Front Page Farrell, John's Other Wife, Mr. Chameleon, Our Gal
Sunday and many other radio dramas, later moved to NBC. Just Plain Bill
chalked up 23 years on the air, until 30 September, 1955. A few of the
Just Plain Bill sponsors over the years were Kolynos toothpaste and
Clapp's baby [removed]

1921 KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania started one of the first daily
radio newscasts in the country. The broadcast came from the city desk of
The Pittsburgh Post.
1953 Jimmy Stewart debuted in The Six Shooter on NBC. He played Britt
Ponset on the Western.
9/21
1946 After being tested on a regional basis, The Second Mrs. Burton
was heard for the first time on the entire CBS network. The Second Mrs.
Burton fared very well, having a relationship with the network for 14 years.
1948 The serial Life With Luigi debuted on CBS. Luigi Basko was played
by J. Carroll Naish. Naish, an Irish American, became typecast as an
Italian immigrant, and went on to play the same role in the TV version
in 1952.
9/22
1943 Singer Kate Smith finished her War Bond radio appeal. For 13
continuous hours Smith had stayed on the air, collecting a whopping $39
million dollars in bond pledges.
1957 The CBS Radio Workshop was silenced after 18 months of what the
critics said was "ingenious radio programming."

Folks;
The previously-postponed conversation between Bob Edwards and Arthur
Anderson, alum of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre, long-time castmember of Let's
Pretend, and one of the greatest Friends of Old-Time Radio has been
re-scheduled for Thursday, September 23rd on XM Satellite Radio.
As mentioned, if you aren't a subscriber to XM Satellite Radio or Sirius
Satellite Radio with the "Best of XM Package," you can listen on-line by

Roma was owned at lest as far back as 1940 by Schenley, Inc. Shenley was
acquired by Guild Wineries and Distilleries of Lodi in 1972. The "Guild"
grew to about 500 member-producers after the acquisition of Roma and
produced a number of nameless and named wines including Roma for a
while. Over time the many names of the original small producers making
up the membership were pared down to a salable few. Canandaigua Wine Co.
of New York bought Guild in 1991.

Subject: Rip, soap operas
I heard on a npr news segment today that one of the long running soaps had
ended friday. I don't recall the name but it was said to have been around
since radio days.
I know that soaps were some of those kinds of shows which moved to tv
painlessly and continued without missing a beat. Did some not make the
transition? Something like ma perkins, did it have a tv version?
In any case, what is the cause for the recent dying off of this long
lasting since radio format? Are fewer people around during the day to see
them? Are reality shows the new version of the soaps. Have people shifted
their attention to the soap like night time continuing storyline shows?
For the latter, it seems to me there were few such radio shows to compete
withe the daytime soaps. Or would something like lum and abner fit that
bill? Can anyone think of a radio reality tv like show, maybe ozzie and
harriet or others that were based on "real" people?
Or perhaps it should be asked backwards, why did this format survive when
so many of the born in radio formats went extinct long ago in tv? In fact,
except for news and maybe some of the recent talent shows and the few
remaining quiz shows, what is left of those formats that were from the
radio era? It seems to me that police/detective type shows became soap
operas in tv. Perhaps the more forensic type "get the bad guy" shows are
what is left of them?
