Subject: who knows racetracks?
In connection with some writing I am doing concerning an old-time radio
actor who worked at a racetrack in the 1920s, I would like to hear from
someone, preferably an old timer, who may have knowledge about that topic
in that era
Thanks,
Howard Blue

I have a Fred Allen movie called " It's In The Bag ". Jack Benny makes a brief
appearance but Fred is the main character. I think his best were with Jack
Benny in " Buck Benny Rides Again " and " Love Thy Neighbour " two of my
favourite films, of course I have a pile of favourite movies.

"I'm trying to track down a recording that was made during World War II by
the Mutual Broadcasting System. I realize that my search is like searching
for a "needle in a haystack," but nevertheless, here are the facts.
My father, who was wounded at Mt. Pantano (Italy), was interviewed by John
Thompson (Chicago Tribune war correspondent) from his hospital bed in
Algiers on January 13, 1943. I believe that the recording of the interview
was broadcast on January 18th; his parents living in New York City heard
the interview, probably on the WOR radio station. I have the script from
the radio recording, but it would be great to find the actual recording.
I know this is a long-shot, but do you have any ideas on how I might track
down this recording (if it still exists at all)? Thank you for your time."

Subject: Radio Politics / Propaganda
I'm currently working on a thesis paper for Oakland University in
Michigan. My subject will be the use of radio in the 1930s and 40s as a
Political "weapon" and its use as a propaganda tool in WW2. Any books or
Periodical suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

I am looking for some one who might consider themselves some what
of an expert on Burns and Allen. I am also looking for someone who
is knowledge able on OTR Announcers. I am trying to find more
information on Harry von Zell.
i can probably help you with burns and allen info, though i'm not very
knowledgable about radio announcers in general.
if you're not aware already, i should point out that harry von zell was the
announcer for the burns and allen radio show for only a very brief period,
from january 1945 through the end of the 1945-46 season. i don't know the
circumstances surrounding his brief tenure with the show, but he was subbing
for bill goodwin, who was the announcer with the longest tenure on the radio
show (1941 - 1950). bill goodwin continued as the announcer for the first
season of the burns and allen TV show, then was replaced by harry von zell,
who stayed with the show for the rest of its run (through 1958).
there were many announcers pre-1941, but none of them was with the show for
more than a year or so. i know harry von zell was fred allen's announcer
for several years in the late 1930s (when the show was an hour long and
sponsored by ipana and sal hepatica); he was also the announcer for bird's
eye open house starring dinah shore in the mid-1940s, and was eddie cantor's
announcer for many years in the 1940s as well.
the only other tidbit i can offer about harry von zell, which you've
probably heard already, is that he was responsible for one of the most
famous bloopers in the history of OTR: he was announcing president hoover
and it came out, "ladies and gentlemen, the president of the united states,
mister hoobert heever!"

Subject: best tunes of all
Every once in a while, I come across a show from the mid-1940s that
includes the following: "the best tunes of all move to Carnegie [removed],
the best tunes of all move to Carnegie [removed]" and on and on, just like
the irritating repetitiveness of a Lucky Strike commercial.
That should tell me that the mystery phrase could refer to the switch of
Lucky Strike's Hit Parade program from a studio to Carnegie Hall. Am I
correct, or does this phrase have another meaning?

when he was a character on nbc's puppet playhouse, the radio howdy doody
ran for president in 1948 against mr. x who turned out to be howdy's twin
brother, double doody.
I have a video of the show where this was revealed. Howdy said he hated to deceive people,
but "Alls fair in love, war, and runnin' for President."
In 1952, as a character on the televised howdy doody show, howdy ran
for relection and won.
Once again, his opponent was "Mr. X," but this time, Mr. X turned out to be Inspector John J.
Fedoozle. Oddly enough, Mr. X was the same puppet both times. They felt that the original
"Double Doody," which was made as a spare puppet, didn't look enough like Howdy. So
they made a new Double Doody, which is now on display at the Smithsonian. And they
turned the original Double Doody into Inspector Fedoozle.
