Subject: Stephen J. McCormick, RIP

A former White House correspondent from the 30s who became an
announcer for Mutual radio and NBC-TV, died at the age of 97 at a
medical facility in Bar Harbor, ME. Stephen J. McCormick had worked
most of FDR's 'fireside chats" for the Mutual Broadcasting Company.
He would go on to cover three other Presidents, including JFK, before
becoming an executive at Mutual.

He was born 5-4-14 in Taunton, MA and attended Boston University
before moving to Washington, DC where his broadcasting career
blossomed. He enlisted in the US Army in World War II and saw action
in the Pacific, including the Battle of Saipan. McCormick returned
from service with a Bronze Star for valor. Although he returned to
broadcasting, he remained in the Army Reserve, eventually reaching
the rank of Lt. Col.

In the 50s he was the host of two NBC-TV programs, "The American
Forum" and "Youth Wants To Know." He was so well-known that he got
to play himself in the 1959 motion picture, "It Happened to Jane"
which starred Doris Day and Jack Lemmon. By 1960 he had returned to
Mutual and appeared on the air with news reports and interviews
through the 70s; he directed the network's coverage of the manned
flights of Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo.

About five years ago, he and his family left the Washington, DC area
where they had lived in Alexandria, VA and Potomac, MD for many
years. They settled in Swan's Lake, ME. He was survived by Theo
McCormick, his wife of 66 years, one daughter, Teddi, and five
grandchildren.

After Ryan Ellett mentioned the passing of Jim Seaver and his show, "Opera Is
My
Hobby", I tried to think of some of the long-running public radio shows. And
the
one that came to mind is that of folksinger Oscar Brand. According to his
website ([removed]), Oscar Brand's "Folksong Festival" has
been
airing on WNYC-AM in New York City since 1945. Oscar himself turns 91 next
month. The show's webpage is at [removed].

SAME TIME, SAME STATION

In late December, we lost a fine actor and friend in Robert Easton. He
was 81. He appeared at SPERDVAC on many occasions and had a fine radio
career. But he was best known as the dialect coach to the stars.

He taught thousands of actors and actresses dialects for future roles
in pictures, voice-overs and television.

This week, we feature his radio work, although the examples we have
are mostly from the 50's in which he plays characters with Texas dialects.
