Recently obituaries of Blake Edwards say he helped write the 1938 radio
script for the Mercury Theatre broadcast of The War of the Worlds. I am
skeptical of this. Can anyone provide any information confirming or denying
this claim?
Richard Corliss wrote in TIME magazine: "At 16, if you believe the legend (I
don't), he was befriended in New York by the 23-year-old theater prodigy Orson
Welles, who allowed the boy to drop a few lines into Howard Koch's script for
the notorious War of the Worlds radio broadcast."
Wait a minute, what is this? ME AND ORSON WELLES, Part 2?
In the first place he was, after all, only 16. In the second place, his family
lived in Los Angeles, and the "War of the Worlds" broadcast originated from
New York. In the third place, Corliss, in mentioning the "legend," states that
he himself does not believe it. In the fourth place, everyone knows that it
was really a young J. D. Salinger who helped Howard Koch with the Martian
script. :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

When I was a toddler, in the late '60s, he was a big part of my nascent
love for rock, and I wrote the following, for one of the Broadway web
sites.
Cole also spent time in radio, and someone reminded me later this

Clay Who?
It's amazing how transitory fame can be, even when it's for over almost
a decade.
>From 1959 to 1968, Clay Cole was kind of like New York's Dick Clark,
with a terrific rock, and dance show, on, I believe, WPIX.
It was the place where the Rolling Stones, and others debuted--Clay
always seemed to be a bit ahead of the curve.
And he just had this entirely pleasant, and endearing, demeanor.
He also hosted a whole bunch of those long ago, wonderful, LIVE rock and
roll shows, back when they still had the benefit of innocence, at places
like the equally legendary Palisades Amusement Park.
But what does all this have to do with Broadway?
The '60s, of course, was when Broadway songs still charted.
And there was crossover with dance programs--even, in some cases, some
of the singing stars, making personal appearances.
For folks of my, my gene-ra-tion who grew up in this area THE CLAY COLE
SHOW had more of an immediacy than the national shows. It was, of
course, of our neighborhoods, and the first place we encountered many
stars of rock, and the Rialto.
The last time I saw Cole was when he was one of the early hosts of AM
NEW YORK, on ABC in the early 1970s, the program that a decade later
would ultimately metamorphose into LIVE WITH REGIS [removed]
The past year must have been a good one for Cole, as he published his
autobiography, SH-BOOM THE EXPLOSION OF ROCK AND ROLL, and he got to
encounter many of his long time fans.
His legacy can also be caught in at least one rock feature film from the
era.

Subject: Mary Livingston
Since my wife and I have been hibernating (we old people don't go out much in
-50
weather) we have been re-listening to Jack Benny's Christmas and New Year's
programs. On a few of these programs Mary will sing, sometimes by herself,
sometimes with Phil Harris. I think she has a terrific singing voice and
delivery.
Does any one know if she ever did any recording or made any records? If so,
how
could I get copies, or tapes, of them? I guess Joyce and I have way too much
time
on our hands this time of year.
Thanks in advance;
