The books I have purchased haven't been very helpful.

I don't know where Bill's been looking, but when you Google "Radio
Sound Effects" the first entry that usually pops up is my detailed
article on that topic, written in 1997, and posted on Lou Genco's OTR
site:

As for the Shadow's "different" voice, it was simple. The actor playing
him (and Lamont Cranston) merely moved to a special filter microphone.
This was the same one used for all incoming phone calls on radio shows.
That leads to an improbable joke about Weston getting a phone call
from Cranston and saying, "Lamont, you sound just like the Shadow."

Regarding books on sound effects, your local library can probably
obtain for you either of below, which will tell you everything you need.

Subject: Sandy Becker

Someone asked about Sandy Becker.

Sanford George Becker was born Feb. 19, 1922 in New York
City. While still in his teens he was on the air at CBS's
then-owned 50,000-watt WBT in Charlotte. He left it in 1942
when summoned to the Navy. While he didn't receive his
discharge until 1948, he got back into radio about 1946 in
New York. His most memorable series was the namesake role
in Young Doctor Malone, already mentioned here, which he
carried from 1947 until "the day radio died" when so much of
it came to an inglorious end, Nov. 25, 1960. His was one of
four open-ended serials that vanished that day, and he spoke
a few personal words to the listeners at the conclusion of
the narrative's long run (dating back to Nov. 20, 1939).

Becker had also been prominent elsewhere on the dial. At
varying times he introduced Backstage Wife, The Columbia
Workshop, Hilltop House, The Shadow, Stepping Out and Take
It or Leave It. He became an audio thespian, too, appearing
in Life Can Be Beautiful, Now Hear This and Treasury Agent.

When radio ended he had already been hosting local daily
series on New York TV since the mid 1950s (WABD and WNEW)
and remained a popular figure with the small fry thoughout
the 1960s. He found yet another career to his liking: from
1960-69 he provided voiceovers for a trio of juvenile
cartoons on TV including King Leonardo and His Short
Subjects, The Underdog Show and Go Go Gophers. Becker died
at Calverton, Long Island on April 9, 1996.

Subject: Re: Grits

I am a D***** Yankee. My introduction to grits came after I joined the Air
Force, and was sent to a base in one of the Southern states. I remember my
first breakfast at a local beanery downtown where I ordered scrambled eggs,
bacon, and toast. When my plate arrived at my table, there was this white
substance on it, and I had no idea what it was. I asked what it was, and the
nice
lady said, grits. Come to find out, it was almost exactly like the corn meal
mush I used to sometimes get for breakfast at home when I was a kid. The
difference was, my mush was always made from yellow corn meal, and grits are
generally white. Other than that, with a little butter and sugar, there is no
difference in the taste. I was informed that a true Southerner always ate
their
grits with salt and pepper. I never could quite do that.

Subject: New York Station

I'm looking for a copy of WNIA radio station now WECK. Back in the 60's in
Buffalo New York, that station would sign off the air with the song Midnight
Mood by Richard Maltby. What I need is the station identifying itself and
playing Midnight Mood please let me know if you can get this or where I can
find this. The following is an e-mall I got from Tom Shannon a radio Buffalo
personality.

Thank you,

Tony Moretta

_Apm201@[removed]_ (mailto:Apm201@[removed])

Tony:
That's a question that a lot of folks ask and I can answer it rather
easily. It's called MIDNIGHT MOOD and it's by RICHARD MALTBY ON THE VIK
LABEL (subsidiary of RCA) in its original form.
Unless you can find a collector who has this and can make a copy for you
or via the internet go to;[removed] and search for either
the title or the orchestra of Richard Maltby, these people have an amazing
collection of things that have long since gone out of print. It may be in a
compilation album!

Good Luck!
Tom Shannon
PS-the station was WNIA (now weck)

ChezSandy asks,

When I was a kid I sent to Captain Midnight for a "Shake Up Mug. I
understand Little Orphan Annie offered this. I sent in 1943 or 44. Was
Orphan Annie's earlier or when.

Ovaltine had a whole series of Shake-Up Mugs. The first Orphan Annie
Shake-Up Mug was offered in 1931. Another Orphan Annie was offered in
1934. Yet another appeared in 1937, with a color variant in 1938. The
Captain Midnight radio show had but one: in 1948. But after the OTR
period, the Captain Midnight television show had one. Also, the Howdy
Doody TV show had one, too.

I think it was Jim Harmon who identified the Shake-Up Mug as the most
insidious of radio premiums. You drank Ovaltine to get one, and it was
used just to mix up more Ovaltine to drink.

Subject: "Great Caesar's Ghost!"

Anyway, since it has often been discussed here that many of the
Superman conventions & situations had originated on the radio, I'd
like to know if, indeed, the phrase "Great Caesar's Ghost!" had its
origins on radio or in the comic books.

I don't know if he ever said that on radio -- I don't remember it in
the few radio episodes I've heard -- but he said it on television
often, and only rarely in the comics. I remember thinking as a kid
that this expression originated on the TV show and migrated to the
comics, in the story of that name. I think, likewise, that Perry
White's insistence on not being called "Chief" came from the TV show
and appeared only rarely in the comics.

The comic book story "Great Caesar's Ghost" preceded the TV story and
was rather different from it. In the comic book, Clark and Lois
inadvertently hear the publishers meeting on the intercom talking
about firing Perry. The appearance of Great Caesar's Ghost to Perry
is an illusion created by Superman to get Perry to go back out and
collect some good stories, so as to impress the publishers.

On the more recent "Lois and Clark" TV show, Perry White says "Great
Shades of Elvis!"

Subject: Re: CD catalog

For a number of years, we have been giving away our CD catalogs at
the different conventions we attend. I'm wondering how many people
who get one actually put it in their computer. The reason I'm
pondering this is because on each disc is both a radio show and a TV
show or a short movie.

The radio show had been in WAV format and is now in mp3 format. The
video is in mpeg1 format. Both play in just about any PC computer.

In all the years that we have been giving away the free shows (each
time we issue an update to the catalog, there are new audio and video
files), I don't recall anyone ever saying anything about the files.

You have to go to the second page of the on screen layout to get to
the buttons. All they say is BONUS 1 and BONUS 2. My guess is that
most people don't even realize that they have these free shows.

The next upgrade to the catalog will have even more special features.
I may not have it ready for Cincinnati, but it will definitely be
ready for Cinevent in Columbus, Ohio in May. And then it will be
available throughout the year.

We always give them away free of charge to anyone who buys something
from our table and even to those who just stop by to say hello. I
hope to see many of you in a few weeks in Cincinnati.
