Subject: Dec issue of "Radio Recall"
The December issue of "Radio Recall" is back from the printer and will
soon be swimming upstream in the annual Christmas Card River enroute to
our subscribers.
Articles in this issue include one by Cort Vitty on the history of Jane
Froman (the 100th anniversary of her birth will be celebrated in
Missouri next year), an 2006 update on "The Cinnamon Bear" by frequent
Digester, Dennis Crow, and a column about "Ralphie's Secret Decoder" by
Stephen A. Kallis, Jr, commenting upon the Jean Shepherd film we'll all
be watching this holiday season.
This issue also contains part one of a three part series on "The
Mosquito Network" by Australian researcher, Martin Hadlow, who recounts
the origin of the Armed Forces Radio Network in the Pacific Islands of
WW II. There is a biography of OTR webmaster, Robert "Bob" Bybee, who
among other sites, manages those of Metro Washington OTR Club as well
as "The Joy Boys." In addition, there is a summary of the newest book
by newly-weds, David and Susan Siegel, entitled "Radio Scripts in
Print," a fine reference volume.

Subject: Things past, fondly remembered
For my radio re-ecreation group we were building a wind machine. We needed
a few parts from the local hardware store. In trying to describe what we
were doing, I mentioned to the clerk (who was not ALL that young) that the
device looked and worked kinda like a mimeograph machine.
Blank.
The clerk had no idea what I was talking about.

Jim Cox comments:> To: <[removed]@[removed];
All I have ever read on the subject --
most likely including literally hundreds of documented sources -- affirms
that this inaugural extravaganza was broadcast from the Waldorf for four
hours on the evening of Friday, November 15, 1926 and not in January 1927
as the biographer intimates.
Even NBC's own publications such as the 10th anniversary edition of the
magazine "NBC TRANSMITTER", November 15, 1936 confirms the date. There was
even a medallion issued for the 10th anniversary. See:

For a biographer, getting it right leaves little wiggle room
when it comes to dates as historically profound as this one.
How true. Often makes one wonder just how trustworthy some history texts
really are.

Subject: With the advance of years
I thought that I would keep out of the mp3 discussion this time as much of
the arguments on either side I have heard before. So hopefully the dust has
settled for another 6 months. However, it has raised an interesting side
point which I would like to ask others here on the digest:
Is anyone else going a little bit deaf?
I think it was all of that talk about lossless formats etc. I am only in my
mid 40s but I am afraid that I can feel my ears moving from WAV to mp3 (as
it were). Part of me thinks that it is listening to all of my radio shows
with headphones, but there is another part of me that knows it is just the
march of time.
I must say that my ears are less forgiving of older shows (when I listen
with my headphones) than the clearer more recent shows I get from BBC 7.
In the meantime I will still continue to load up my mp3 player with my radio
shows before I go out for my evening walk.
See you all in the old folks home.
Love as always, David Rogers

God Bless you, Jim Cox. The CBS Chirp and Bong should start in 50 minutes at
midnight Dec 1st, 2006. Your ten year CBS Radio exile is over. You have
arrived into the Promised Land of America's second oldest radio network. Now I
have to work to get CBS into Cleveland, Dayton, Columbus, Norfolk, Lexington.
It is so sad that the Columbia network affiliate lineup was better in 1939
than it is today. [removed] Mike Paraniuk

This comedy bit was recorded by Jim (Mr. Magoo) Backus and Phylis Diller in
1958 and made it into the top 40 charts. I don't have information on what
label the recording was made.

Subject: John Lair Book
I've just finished reading Michael Ann Williams' "Staging Tradition: John
Lair and Sarah Gertrude Knott."
It covers the parallel careers of Ms Knott, founder and spirit behind the
long-running National Folk Festival, and John Lair, pioneer WLS broadcaster
and originator, emcee and inspiration of radio's "Renfro Valley Barn Dance"
(CBS, WLW, WHAS) and the CBS "Renfro Valley Gatherin," still being
syndicated.
This is the first account of John Lair's career; warts, failures, successes
and all. Really fascinating. Lair was the first to come with the obvious
idea to originate a radio barndance from a rural area where country music
comes from, rather than some auditorium in Chicago, Cincinnati or Nashville.
Although I bought the book for the Lair information, I was equally
interested in the steadfast accomplishments of Sara G. Knott. A real eye
opener.
The book is published by the University Of Chicago Press and is a must for
any historian interested in what used to be called "Rural Radio."
