Subject: JAY HICKERSON'S BIRTHDAY

May I shout a very Happy Birthday wish to Jay Hickerson on this day and
from this pulpit?
I usually see him in my Buddy List when he is on line and the fact that I
have not seen him lately must mean he is still undergoing therapy after
that nasty fall so here's wishing him and his lovely wife a hopeful and
uplifting Happy Birthday!
On this day after Thanksgiving I realize that Gina and I have so much to
thank him for over the many years that he has been kind enough to include
us
in the invites and myself in the marvelous reenactments at FOTR in Newark.
Thanks Jay and have a great Day pal.
Onwards all.
Can next year be far behind?

Subject: TV to Radio

Doctor Joe Webb posts that he can only remember two shows going from
TV to radio: Tales of Tomorrow and Have Gun, Will Travel.

This topic has been re-visited several times on the Digest, but I
guess one more time won't hurt.

Disregarding the fudge factor of those shows that were simulcast on
both venues (Two For the Money, George Gobel Show, etc.) there still
were a number of TV programs that spawned a true radio version. I
even conducted a presentation on this very topic at a long-ago FOTR.

Other than the ones Dr. Webb mentions, the others were: Hopalong
Cassidy, My Little Margie, Howdy-Doody, What's My Line ?, Wild Bill
Hickok, and Space Cadet. Regarding Howdy Doody, Bob Smith did a
radio show, "Triple B Ranch" which had a character named "Elmer"
whose expression was "Well, Howdy Doody." Eventually Smith got his TV
show and had Howdy Doody created as a puppet in 1948 and that TV show
spun off a radio version in 1951.

To really split hairs, Ray Milland's TV show "Meet Mr. McNutley"
debuted on 9-17-53, the same day as a radio version of that show did.
However since CBS ran the TV show one hour earlier, technically we
could say the show was on TV before it was on radio. (That TV show
also ran a year longer than the radio version, Sept 55 vrs. June 54.)

And, as Greg Oppenheimer has pointed out, "I Love Lucy" came close to
spinning off a radio version, but it was never got off the ground. It
came about when Hal Hudson, a CBS executive, was watching "I Love
Lucy" in February 1952 when they lost the picture but followed the
episode with just the sound. Next day, Hudson phoned Jess Oppenheimer
and told him to make a radio show from the TV soundtrack. One episode
was recorded a few weeks later, with Desi adding some necessary
narration. But this show was never broadcast and the idea was put
aside permanently.

I have been listening to some "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" episodes from
early 1960 and the "Be Sociable" Pepsi jingle is sung by someone who is
only referred to as "Kay". Does anyone know if this is Kay Thompson, Kay
Starr
or some other Kay? Even John Abbott's amazing volumes on YTJD do not
provide the answer to this and a "google" search has not revealed the lady's
identity.

 December

 From Those Were The Days

11/27

1930 Broadcasting from "...the little theatre off Times Square,"
according to the show's introduction, The First Nighter was first heard.
The program, which actually originated from Chicago, then from
Hollywood, aired for 23 years and featured dramas and comedies.

11/28

1932 Groucho Marx performed on radio for the first time.

11/29

1950 "I Fly Anything", starring singer Dick Haymes in the role of
cargo pilot Dockery Crane, premiered on ABC. With a title like that, is
it any wonder the show only lasted one season? Haymes went back to
singing and did very well, thank you.

11/30

1940 Lucille Ball and Cuban musician Desi Arnaz were married.

12/2

1932 The Adventures of Charlie Chan was first heard on the NBC Blue
network.

12/3

1928 The first broadcast of The Voice of Firestone was heard. The
program aired each Monday evening at 8. The Voice of Firestone became a
hallmark in radio broadcasting. It kept its same night, time (in 1931
the start time changed to 8:30) and sponsor for its entire run.
Beginning on September 5, 1949, the program of classical and
semiclassical music was also seen on television.

GEORGE BURNS AND GRACIE ALLEN stopped doing the half-hour radio program when
they made the transition to television in 1950, but they did continue
producing five-minute radio shorts up to 1959 for CBS, so they were on both
mediums at the same time.

Not quite. By that time, they had been concluding each TV show by
coming back on to do one of their vaudeville routines for about five
minutes. Those routines from the TV show were used on radio in the
early evening, in a block that followed the Amos & Andy Music Hall and
also included an Andy Griffith routine and the Bob & Ray Show. So
George and Gracie were on both media at the same time, but the radio one
was a rerun of part of the television show.
