 From Those Were The Days

7/30

1937 The American Federation of Radio Artists (AFRA) was organized. It
was part of the American Federation of Labor. The union was for all
radio performers except musicians. The union later became The American
Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) to include TV folk,
as well.

1942 Stage Door Canteen was first heard on CBS. The show was broadcast
from New York City and 500 servicemen were entertained each week by
celebrities who freely donated their time for the war effort.

7/31

1933 Listeners turned up the radio on this day to hear the announcer
introduce "Jack Armstrong, the All American Boy!" The show was one of
the longest running adventure programs on radio, continuing until 1951.

This Week's Classics & Curios Show:

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 130

BOB & RAY, FAST MOVING AND SIDE STEPPING

This episode starts off with two rare recordings of duets by Bob Hope
and Margaret Whiting: "Ain't We God Fun" and "Lucky Us." I play them,
first, because they are delightful and, second, because they set the
mood and the stage leading up to four Bob & Ray shows. The connection to
Bob & Ray is the fun and laughter Bob & Ray blessed us with through
their unique and very special "off the wall" sense of humor.

Well, if you know OTR you certainly recall Wally Ballou played by Bob of
Bob and Ray. "Reporter" Wally started his on the scene reports with "...ly
Ballou speaking." That, of course, made fun of the way that technical
gaffs sometimes occurred on cuts to remote reporters on radio by
creating an "upcut" elision of the reporter's first word. Bob and Ray
did indeed love to make fun of the medium of radio, especially silly
interviews by stilted newsmen who treated subjects seriously. And they
both enjoyed magnifying the insignificant and the unexpected or
illogical. As Bob once said, "I guess it's the hilarity of [spoofing]
pomposity that hasn't gone out of fashion."

As fans of Bob and Ray also know, they feasted on funny or curious names
of people like Buddy Blodgett and odd place names like the Polygon
Ballroom. Most of all, as Bob once said in a real interview, "We spend
most of our time entertaining each other." "It was a sad day when we
didn't crack each other up," added Ray. In words that described TV
sitcoms back in the 1980's [and are even truer today], Ray noted, "Only
the laugh machines have a good time. The decisions about television and
radio programming are in the hands of the bookkeepers, and they're not
noted for their humor." As for most of today's TV sitcoms writers, they
might have added the words "sophomoric," "vulgar," and "rarely if ever
subtle."

Characters created by Bob and Ray have delightful names like Natalie
Attired, Artie Schermerhorn, Webley Webster, Mary Backstayge [Noble
Wife], Larry Lovebreath, Oliver Leo Laatee [or O. Leo Laatee], Mister
Science, and Jack Headstrong "All American American."

On our episode today Bob and Ray allow us briefly to enter their comic
universe on four shows as they offer listeners such comedy bits as an
interview with the mayor of Lake Chipmonk, who, while explaining the
niceness and the newly mosquito-free status of the area, swats mosquitos
which listeners can hear buzzing around in the telephone booth. Then
there is the gentleman looking for employers seeking employees whose
specialty is not being responsible.

Among other offerings of the duo, they feature a handy burglar kit,
illustrate instructions in the Bob & Ray Radio Script Writing School,
audition a country western DJ, present a Mary McGoon show, and as a
public service explain how the radio audience can obtain Bob and Ray
Diplomas, including a [removed] -- without having to send money ... or vegetables!

Bob and Ray even treat us to a tune or two, such as the song "Taboo" and
their theme song "Mention My Name in Sheboygan." That vintage vaudeville
song seems pretty appropriate, of course, because it has the line that
proclaims, "Mention my name in Sheboygan, but please don't tell them
where I am." All in all, as Bob and Ray point out at the end of each
show, their programs are "fast moving and side-stepping." In our
household Bob and Ray remain unique and side-splitting comic geniuses
who reflect the best of Old Time Radio.

So, listening to Bob & Ray, the lyrics sung by Hope and Whiting indeed
ring true: ""Ain't We Got Fun" and "Lucky Us."

Subject: OTR Speech in Wisconsin's Northwoods
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I've accepted an invitation to be the keynote speaker at the Merrill History &
Culture Center, 100 E. Third Street, Merrill, Wisconsin 54452. This event
will take place on Sunday, August 24, at 7:00 pm. My presentation will cover
the history of radio broadcasting in the [removed], discussing its strengths and
weaknesses over the years, and playing excerpts from network programming of
that era. The speech will detail the power the advertising agencies had in
determining program schedules, show content, and even choice of cast members.
Admission for the public is $ 5; members of the Merrill History & Culture
Center pay $ 4.

Autographed copies of my book, "Private Eyelashes: Radio's Lady Detectives"
will be available for purchase after my speech. This book won the Agatha
Award for Best Non-Fiction.

This will be a sentimental return to the northwoods of Wisconsin for me. I
grew up in the nearby city of Rhinelander in the 40s and graduated from high
school there in 1954. While I've usually returned to Rhinelander every five
years for my high school reunion, this will be my first visit to Merrill in
over 50 years. I look forward to meeting any Digesters in the region.
