performed at the Chicago Auditorium.
From Today in History at the NY Times -

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 53
SONGS FROM AMERICA'S COWBOY/COUNTRY HERITAGE: FROM THE CARTERS TO BOB
WILLS AND BING
Bob Wills popularized Western Swing and that's just part of America's
musical heritage of diversified music styles on this Classics & Curios
show. We'll enjoy songs sung by Bob's vocalists Tommy Duncan and Leon
Rausch. Also, along with Bob's great 1940 recording "New San Antonio
Rose" we'll hear "Sioux City Sioux" by Bing Crosby, "I've Got Spurs That
Jingle Jangle Jingle" by Tex Ritter, "I'm An Old Cowhand from the Rio
Grande" by Patsy Montana," "Sparkling Brown Eyes" by the Wilburns & Webb
Pierce, "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes" by the Carter family from
1929, and one of the most beloved cowboy tunes "Red River Valley" by
Little Roy Lewis. Leon Rausch gets us started with "I'm a Music Man"
with Tommy Allsup, once part of Buddy Holly's group the Crickets.
The Carter family is an integral part of America's music heritage as
they pioneered a folk and country style that was embraced by some of
country's most famous and beloved singers, such as Jimmie Rodgers and
later by Cowpokes like Gene Autry, Patsy Montana, and Tex Ritter. In
1935 Patsy became the first woman in country music to have a million
selling single with "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart." The Carters'
recordings spanned the years 1927 to 1956 and influenced not only folk
and country but also bluegrass, Southern Gospel, pop (and even rock
musicians like Bob Dylan). Sara Carter sang lead vocals, and Maybelle's
harmonizing and outstanding guitar accompaniment gave the group its
distinctive style.
Even Cole Porter joined the cowboy/country trend with a tune like "Don't
Fence Me In" (coming in a later show and made famous in 1944 by Bing and
the Andrews Sisters, staying on the charts at number 1 for 8 weeks ).
"Dude" Johnny Mercer added "I'm An Old Cowhand from the Rio Grande,"
which he was inspired to write while riding in a train in Texas. It was
a huge hit in 1936 with Jimmy Dorsey's band, sung by Bing in the film
"Rhythm on the Range."
The Wilburn Brothers, members of the Grand Ole Opry, had a TV show for
12 years and introduced the world to singers like Loretta Lynn and gave
exposure to entertainers like the Oak Ridge Boys, Bill Monroe, and Tex
Ritter. The Wilburns' first hit, with Webb Pierce, was called "Sparkling
Brown Eyes." In1954 it was on the charts for 18 weeks, 4 at number 1. In
all they had 30 songs on the country charts.
Little Roy of the pioneering Gospel group the Lewis Family demonstrates
the great musicianship of many cowboy/country entertainers and still
performs today with his foster daughter Lizzie Long in their "Little Roy
and Lizzie" show.
Finally, our show closes to fadeout with the great Harry James
performing a portion of 1939's "I've Heard That Song Before." I hope the
songs on this show reflect some of the delightful diversity and the
wonderful heritage of our great American music styles and performers.
Well, it's said that "music washes away from the soul the dust of
everyday life," (Red Auerbach paraphrasing Oliver Wendell Holmes) So
enjoy a gentle "shower" of early American music!

Make Believe Ballroom Time
Episode 5
In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"
