I sometimes suspected
that the producer piggybacked on the popularity of the radio program of the
past and was thus able to get such luminaries on the program -- sort of an
offer to revisit the by-gone era.
I specifically remember an episode of that TV series all about a radio
actress murdered on the air. She was played by Eve Arden, in fact many of
that episode's guest stars (including Betty White) were advertised as having
ties to OTR, apparently a bit of stunt casting.
I always remembered the TV "Ellery Queen" for being the first dramatic show
I ever saw in which someone (Jim Hutton, as Ellery Queen) broke the fourth
wall. As soon as he found the clue that solved the case, he would look
into the camera and address the audience directly, asking if they were smart
enough to find it. I later figured that too was a nod to the radio
version.

Subject: Not Kay Starr
A couple of weeks ago I wrote asking if anyone knew anything about a Pepsi
commercial "Be Sociable ..." and, specifically, who the female vocalist was.
One reply stated they thought it would be Kay Starr. And the male
personality may have been Charlie Barnet.
I was able to find some Kay Starr videos on YouTube and after listening to
the voice, my ears do not believe Kay Starr is the voice on the Pepsi
commercial.
Same question ... does anyone know who the female singer in the Pepsi "Be
Sociable ..." commercial heard on Johnny Dollar, Have Gun, Will Travel, and
other OTR programs may be?
Oh, try your ears ... see if you agree.

Martin, I have listened to many shows from NBC on which Robert Armbruster's
stock music was used. I have also heard every one of the available episodes
from the five-part Bob Bailey series of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. I am
dead certain that some of the background music from the latter was also used
on NBC. I don't consider myself to be a musician, but I have a good musical
ear and I am 100 percent certain that the music from YTJD is the exact same
music used on TTR and other NBC shows.
Incidentally, is any of the music library from NBC or CBS available for
listening?

Subject: Marsha Hunt and "Old"-time radio
I just wanted to remind everyone that this Saturday's "Those Were the Days"
puts the spotlight on actress Marsha Hunt, as we share our in-depth
conversation with Ms. Hunt about her radio, movie, and television careers and
feature her on "Suspense," "The Charlie McCarthy Show," and "Command
Performance." You can hear it live from 1 to 5 pm CST at WDCB-FM ([removed] in
Chicago; [removed] around the world). If you miss the live broadcast,
we'll archive it for one week at [removed]
Concerning the discussion about the longest-running radio show, I know that
The Grand Ole Opry has been around in one form or another since 1925,
although its network affiliation didn't begin until the 1930s.
