Certainly the longest running programs of their type - and one of the
longest running broadcasts of any type - The MET. OPERA broadcasts
will be sadly missed. Bob Fells tells us they will be discontinued after the
2003-2004 Season.
The only things that comes to mind is that the corporation won't need
a TEXACO radio program anymore, since it is merging with SHELL
and all the stations (except a very few) will go under the name SHELL.

Paul of pjhgs@[removed] asked if anyone had an audio or video copy of the
old Jack Benny / Mel Blanc "Si, Cy, Sue" routine. Well, I agree - it's
one of the funniest things ever done on the air. I have an audio copy,
but not a video. I do remember it being done on television, as well as
radio. If you want a copy of it, I'll be happy to send it to you, but it
might take a while. It was broadcast on radio, incidentally, on
11-16-53.
Best regards,

Huckleberry Hound was a Hanna-Barbera creation, and he was born around
1954 or 1955. However, the Huckleberry Hound voice, provided by the
amazingly versatile Daws Butler, was a slightly toned-down version of
a "cool hepcat" character voice that had been used in MGM cartoons for
at least a decade, both for Hanna & Barbera and for Tex Avery.
Neither Huck nor the earlier version of the voice sound all that much
like Godfrey, at least not to me. I've only heard Arthur Godfrey in a
low-pitched mellow tone that sounds as though he was sitting 6 inches
away from an RCA 44-BX with the jumper switch set to 'M', and a
matching low-key, unruffled delivery. Huck, while somewhat low-key,
could get excited when he had to.

If any of you want an easy way to watch a color film of Arthur Godfrey, the
Prelinger Archives has the 1953 Eastern Airlines film "Flying With Arthur
Godfrey" available for viewing on the net. Here is the URL for my on-site
search just using the word Godfrey. It might not work because it is a
search URL.

That would give you the listings for both parts, but you can get to part
one directly with this. The second part is probably the same with a b at
the end instead of an a.

I watched the first part. Near the end, after they get the plane in the
air, Godfrey takes out a pack of Chesterfields and tries to get the
co-pilot to smoke one, but he tells Godfrey that he doesn't smoke. Godfrey
anyway tries to sell him on buying them by the carton as he lights one up
himself, puffs, and says, "Boy, this is the life." This is SHAMELESS,
since the main purpose of this promotional film was probably mainly to be
sent out on free loan to schools. Teachers used these things all the time
back then. It's the kind of film to show to kids who say "Hey! I want to
be a pilot when I grow up! And I want to smoke and get lung cancer!"

I've been thinking about your question and it occurs to me that there
indeed, was a cartoon episode of Huckleberry Hound "imitating" Arthur
Godfrey's voice. Perhaps the bear was behind a mic in the cartoon and he
did the "Howya, howya, howya" Godfrey voice imitation in the skit. Just a
guess - is that someone else's recollection too??

Subject: Bernardine Flynn
I was rummaging around an antique store today and came across a pile of
maybe a dozen STAND BY magazines--the weekly publication of WLS Chicago.
Being something of a fan of Vic and Sade, I bought one from October 2, 1937
which features a nice photo of Bernardine Flynn on the cover. There is also
a short article about the birth of her son shortly before publication date.
One wonders where Anthony Doherty (her son) is today.
I have scanned the photo as a .BMP file. If anyone would like it, drop me a
note and I'll e-mail it right back.
Here's the article in its entirety:
BERNARDINE FLYNN, more familiarly known to listeners as Sade of Vic and
Sade--the radio mother of young Rush--is playing another important mother
role these days, one that isn't written in the script. For she has a
real-life son now, tiny Anthony Doherty, born less than a month ago.
Bernardine is the wife of Dr. C. C. Doherty of Chicago.
She began her dramatic career at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, her
home town. It was while she was playing the lead in a campus production that
she got her first real "break." Zona Gale, famous Wisconsin authoress, saw
her and recommended her to Brock Pemberton for a role in "Seven Year Love."
So after her graduation in 1929, Bernardine turned to Broadway.
Back in the Middle West the following Spring for a visit between New York
engagements, she heard that NBC was seeking an actress with a French accent.
Having learned a creditable accent from her mother, who was French,
Bernardine dashed to the studios for an audition and won the job. She made
an immediate hit on the air and since then has appeared in many NBC dramatic
presentations.
She takes her work very seriously and studies her radio material at home in
addition to rehearsing and practicing at the studios. For recreation, she
visits legitimate theaters and movies and reads and does a lot of walking.
Though she and her husband prefer the country, they live in an apartment
near Chicago's loop as a matter of convenience.
Bernardine has dark brown curly hair, weighs 118 pounds and is five feet,
four and one-half inches tall. Her favorite sport is archery and her idea of
the most useless pastime is card playing. Her pet aversions are crowds and
streetcars.
The Dohertys say it's a little early yet to predict whether young Anthony
will be a physician, like his dad, or a radio star, like his mother. But
either profession would please them both.

Mystery, Nemesis, Inc. and The Stonehill Prison Mystery. They definitely
sound like they came from the 30s & possibly Chicago as Nemesis, Inc. takes
place in Chicago. Anybody know anything about these programs. I bought this

To Lee, who asked about Godfrey/Huck Hound: Are you referring to Huckleberry
Hound? I don't know much about it, but Huckleberry Hound was a
Hannah-Barbara cartoon that came out in the late '50s or early '60s. I never
saw any connection between that character and Arthur Godfrey. I'd be very
surprised to learn there is one. I am sure the information you seek is in
one of the many books on the work of Hannah-Barbara.
