CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 36
Jerry Gray & His Band of Today from the Meadowbrook
Time to dial in the Mutual Network for a 1950 big band remote starring
Jerry Gray & His Band of Today from the Meadowbrook Ballroom in Cedar
Grove, New Jersey. In 1949 Decca hired Jerry to do "Milleresque"
recordings giving his orchestra the "Band of Today" description. Jerry,
of course, had arranged great tunes for Artie Shaw like "Begin the
Beguine" and later for several of Glenn Miller's biggest hits such as
"Moonlight Cocktail," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," and "Elmer's Tune." Many
of Jerry's up-beat arrangements reveal the style that would become his
trademark: a melody broken into two-to-four-measure phrases, usually
carried by the brass section, repeated with increasing intensity until
the climax. It was in this style that Jerry composed and arranged
"String of Pearls" which Miller made famous, and it's that great song
that kicks off this set. Other great danceable tunes in this remote
include "Wonderful You," "Adios," "All My Love," "Nevertheless," and
"All the Things You Are." Interestingly, it was Jerry who conducted the
Miller band in Paris following Miller's disappearance over the English
Channel, and Jerry remained as conductor into 1945 when the Miller
Estate chose the more charismatic Tex Beneke from Fort Worth. Jerry
later helped with "The Glenn Miller Story" film in 1953 and also did
arrangements for singers such as Vic Damone. Finally, Jerry's band's
last "gig" came in the 1960's as the house band at the Fairmont Hotel
down the road not far away in Dallas. So now I invite you to join me, my
wife, and the dancers at the Meadowbrook and do some slow dancing. This
dance is special since my wife and I are about to celebrate our 50th
wedding anniversary. Our song was and is "All the Things You Are." And
remember, as Robert Browning wrote, and as the spirit of ballroom
dancers proclaims as one voice, "Grow old with me! The best is yet to
be," whether on earth's or on heaven's dance floor.
Eddie Hubbard & The Browsers: "That Old Gang of Mine" "And The Angels Sing"
Back to Eddie Hubbard and the Browsers we go once more for a show
(undated but probably from 1992) with great recordings and fun big band
trivia, all free of commercials. Some of the performers showcased this
time include Dorothy Shay, the Park Avenue Hillbilly, along with Count
Basie, Avino Ray, Gene Krupa, Perry Como, Xavier Cugat, and Tommy
Dorsey. To test your big band trivia knowledge Browsers ask questions
like "Can you name songs with the names of instruments in the title?" Or
how about "What was the tune that was stolen for 'Who's Afraid of Elliot
Ness?'" Also, maybe you can name songs with "Lost" in the title and
movies that Tommy Dorsey was in. And here's a good one: "How many times,
when, and by whom was the song 'That Old Gang of Mine' made popular?"
Special favorite recordings for me include Eddie's Extras (in place of
commercials) "Extraordinary Gal," "Dixie Lee," and "Bolero at the
Savoy." Among Browsers' featured recordings are "And the Angels Sing,"
"Nighty Night," "Talk of the Town," "Let's Get Lost," "Perfidia," and
"Pussy Willow." Near the end of the show a "Phooler" and a jazz version
of "I Won't Dance," take things to fadeout.
Special thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting the original
studio tapes for high quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time
Episode 2
This episode of It's Makebelieve Ballroom Time features two programs
from The All Star Parade of Bands,
the 52-11-16 broadcast of the Ray Anthony Orchestra from the Hollywood
Palladum and the 54-01-04 show of Sammy Kaye's Swing and Sway Band from
the Last Frontier Hotel in Las Vagas, Nevada. Lots of great music from
two entirely different groups plus all the swell data from
[removed] about what happened in the years 1952 and 1954.
