Subject: CHARLIE CHAN OTR MOVIE

06-14-08

On Digest #148, Melanie asked for the title of a Charlie Chan movie
involving old-time-radio which she caught the tail end of.

One might be "Charlie Chan at the Wax Museum", where a radio broadcast
takes place live from a wax museum.

The one she saw was probably, "The Scarlet Clue", where murders are
taking place in the studios of a radio station, where government weapons
research is being done on the upper floors and spies are seeking to
interfere.

If she is interested in Charlie Chan movies, I would recommend, "Charlie
Chan at the Movies", by Ken Hanke -- McFarland ISBN 0-89950-427-2.

Best regards,

Jim

From Those Were The Days --

6/17

1942 - Suspense, known as radio's outstanding theatre of thrills,
debuted on CBS. The program kept millions of loyal listeners in suspense
for the next 20 years (and three months, for the purists <g> -ed)

6/18

1939 - CBS aired The Adventures of Ellery Queen for the first time. An
interesting twist came near the end of the program when the show was
stopped to allow a panel of experts to guess the solution of the night's
mystery.

1961 - Gunsmoke was broadcast for the last time on CBS. The show had
been on for nine years. It was called the first adult Western. The star
of Gunsmoke was William Conrad.

6/19

1934 - The [removed] Congress established the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC). The task of the commission was to regulate radio
broadcasting.

Actually Lady Macbeth was the one who was "mad" . She "couldn't resist"
killing Duncan either. And it is safe to say she was "sorry", particularly
about "The Thane if Fife" - Lady Macduff.

Now if that doesn't get ya'all back to reading the play nuthin will.

Subject: Alfred Hitchcock / Banquo's Chair

Kenneth Clarke asked:

Didn't Alfred Hitchcock have an episode with this title? Sounds like a title
he might have considered.

Yes, Hitchcock featured an adaptation of the same short story the SUSPENSE episode was
based on. In fact, it was one of 16 or 17 episodes of the 430+ episodes made that was
directed by Hitchcock himself.

Subject: FOTR flier

I just finished designing a single page flier promoting the Friends of
Old-Time Radio Convention. It features a simple photograph for attraction,
the name of the convention, the dates, hotel, directions, and all the usual
required information. Every year FOTR sends out a promotional flier of about
2 or 3 pages thick to the mailing list, but these never get copied and
distributed at other conventions or vendor mailings. So I took the liberty to
make one up myself. I usually do this every year, as Terry Salomonson and
Derek Tague can verify, and send out a mailing every year. Expenses and time
plays a factor this year, so I made up the flier to make copies and
distribute to at conventions. If anyone wants any copies, let me know
(include your mailing address) and I will ship you as many as you need. I can
also e-mail it as an attatchment, but it's not in pdf so I cannot guarantee
it'll come through a-okay, depending on what software you have.

Subject: Lock up

Travis writes that he is having lockup problems with some of the older tapes:

Has anyone had any problems with the old-style 631 locking up? It's the
older style light reddish-brown tape in the type of reel hub that 291 comes
in, not the newer style one from the 80s.

Ampex tapes seem to be the tapes that have had the most problems where the
tape simply slows down or stops traveling through the guides and over the
tape heads. The problem is not the "sticky" problem that open reel tapes have
had, but it is a problem of beginning or end cut of the tape: Huge rolls of
tape, much like the huge rolls of newspaper that are printed, are cut into
thousands of 1/4 inch tape. At the beginning of the roll, when the cutting
machine starts, it moves slowly. Within seconds the cutting machine gets up
to speed. As the tape roll nears the end, the cutting machine slows down to
prevent loose end "slap" and to put on a new roll of tape for cutting.
The problem comes at the beginning and end of the cutting of the tape.
Because the cutting machine is not up to speed at these two times, cutting of
the tape becomes inaccurate. This causes the width of the tape (not the
length) to vary. Thus a tape that should be exactly 1/4 inch wide may be
slightly wider. The tape guides (on open reel recorders) are rigid, made of
steel or aluminum and do not give. You have a tape with a width greater than
1/4 inch across go through those guides, the least they will do is slow the
tape down and, usually, lock up.
Ampex was notorious for taking those beginning and end rolls and selling them
on 7 inch reels with a different code number such as 641, 631, 241 and more.
These were their worst tapes and were sold at a reduced price. But, Ampex
even sold their premium tape (406 and Grand Master 456) with bad widths. All
to make more money.
A lot of tapes were returned. The interesting part is that rarely were there
any problems with their 10 1/2 inch reels because purchasing a 10 1/2 inch
reel of tape was done by the professional engineers and recordists, and Ampex
did not want to create lockup in the professional arena. They still had major
"sticky" tape problems with all their tapes back in the 70s and into the 80s.
Today, it doesn't matter since open reel tape and tape machines are mostly a
thing of the past to most people.
Only people such as Travis, myself, and a number of dedicated OTR people take
the time to use open reel tapes and machines to dub and save radio shows to
CD.
