A while ago I was able to review, thanks to the internet, Donald O' Conner's
dance number "Make 'em Laugh"
as featured in the 1952 MGM film "Singing in the
Rain." The reason I'm telling you Digest readers this is because
of an
oversight or a downright failure of mine.
Some years back, at least prior
to 2003, the year of Mr. O'Conner's passing, I attended a luncheon meeting of
the
Pacific Pioneers, Radio Broadcasters
[removed]
being held
at the Sportmen's Lodge banquet facilities in the San Fernando Valley,
California.
I was pleasantly surprised discovering that two of my luncheon
table companions were
Gene Autry, and Donald O'Conner.
For some obscure
reason reason I posed a question to Mr. Autry about whether or not he used
a
capo when he played his guitar while accompanying his singing. I guess it was
to assuage my
curiousity at never having seen one attached to any guitars he
used in his films. His answer was
in the affirmity. But of course the songs
he sang in his films were dubbed and as such he didn't even
need strings on
the guitars he used in them.
But here is my regret re Donald O'Conner. I
had seen his "Make 'em Laugh" performance, enjoyed it immensely,
and here I
had a chance to tell him so in person, but I never did !
If you study all
the moves, the singing, facial expressions, and comic choreography of the
dance, he did it all brilliantly.
Every time I think about my lack of
acknowledgement of his contribution to my viewing enjoyment I renew my chagrin
about myself.
I trust this revelation of mine encourages folks to remember
and give praise to those who contribute to their well being.
Kent Smith, the
actor, told me it's always nice to hear complements about one's work.
Regards,
Conrad Binyon
