We were a family of an Episcopal minister (priest). My brother, sister, and
I could be heard saying, "darn", "heck", and "shoot." No one ever corrected
our mild swearing, but when I got into high school, my classmates commonly
used "damn" and "hell" and "shit." Of course, none of those terrible words
ever came from our radio. I think our classmates purposely did a lot of
swearing just to see if they could provoke us.

Speaking of "Can you top this?" and "It pays to be ignorant", I recall
hearing one of those shows in my collection. During the broadcast,
listeners were invited to send in jokes. Those used got some small amount
of cash -- and -- a recording of their joke as it went out over the network!
There were a few other programs that offered discs/airchecks of the shows
they contributed to. Seems like one was a quiz show, and possibly the other
was "Dr. Christian." That latter program was written by listeners, so there
was an especially good reason for offering recordings of the programs.

he was Don Rickles the comedian. He would laugh about it, but it did bother
him a bit.

I got to meet the TV version of Sgt. Preston in Knoxville a few years
back. Sgt. Preston was perhaps my favorite radio hero; we had no TV.
But the images we saw in comics, games and on cereal boxes was the TV
version, so when we heard the show, at least near the end of its run,
it was the TV version we pictured in our minds. He was as rugged as
the character he played. He had been a real backwoods man, bush pilot
and bronco buster when he was discovered. You can imagine how he felt
about the exercise guru Richard Simmons purloining his name.

I am very much interested in Al Girard's project of converting old radio
magazines to digital format and posting them on the internet. However, I did
not see any kind of link to these pages. Can Al or someone else please
provide
a link to whatever has been completed and posted thus far?

No, I'm not 100 pct. sure that it's THE Don Rickles. I heard that he was a
radio announcer for a period, but that might be wrong.

I assume that there must not be any scripts available for the period
1955-57? I wish there were a log for that period.

Also, have any other episodes of Rock n Roll Dance Party turned up among
collectors? Shame mine was only a half [removed]

Some discussion centered around "It pays to be ignorant"
recently. Roger Bower was a guest on "The Golden Age

Bertel and Ed Corcoran. Mr. Bower was a network
announcer, and the producer of "It pays to be ignorant."

Subject: Just call me Joe?

Kudos to Irene Heinstein for uncovering the real date and place of
birth for Joe Laurie, Jr as February 24, 1892 in Moscow, thus
negating his lifelong claim he was born in Manhattan.

Now if only we'll be able to determine his true birth name.
Obviously, no Russian father in the 19th century would look into the
crib and say to his wife, "Ah, Sasha, such a wonderful [removed] shall
name him Joe Laurie, Jr."

In all probability, the family modified their names when they came to
America and were naturalized. So what's your guess on the actual name
on Joe Laurie Jr's birth (or baptism) certificate stashed away in
some forgotten Moscow archive?

My nomination: "Jozef Mikhail Lorislavich"

I have two Lone Rangershows that must come from records because of their short length. I believe the dates are bogus, but does anyone know anything about these?

35xxxx Medicine Rock (8 min, 5 seconds) "This is the story that tells how Tonto once saved the Lone Ranger"

360410 (0499) Finding Silver (6 min, 34 seconds) "This the legend of a man and a horse and how they met."

I'm hoping someone can explain the connection to OTR of this quip. It comes
from a cartoon released in 1944 "Donald Duck and the Gorilla" where a radio
announcer gives updates on an escaped gorilla, but ends each
announcement with "That is all. Breckenridge." I'm guessing this is a takeoff
from some radio personality or show of the 30s or 40s. Anyone familiar with
this line?
