Subject: The Whisperer
hello all. i was recently listening to a cd of the Whistler and
there were two episodes on there of a show called the Whisperer. It
wasn't what i would call great, kind of a Shadow type show and a bit
hard to understand the whispering part. i wondered how long lived
this show was ? it didnt seem like the kind of show that would be a
hit, especially with competition from the Shadow.

Subject: REPS Showcase a Delight!
I've just returned from a delightful weekend of radio entertainment, thanks
to the wonderful folks of the Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound. I've always
enjoyed their yearly Showcase event at the Seattle Center, but this year was
exceptionally good. Highlights included Rosemary Rice reprising her original
role on "I Remember Mama" in a very touching story, "Adventures in Odyssey"
stars Paul Herlinger and Walker Edmiston delighting a huge audience of kids,
and a truly hysterical "table read" of a Buck Rogers show from 1939 in which
poor Tommy Cook tried in vain to direct Ms. Rice, Mr. Edmiston, Frank
Bresee, Dick Beels, and the hilarious Donald Buka as a hypnotized Buck. I've
never laughed so much at a convention event in my life!
Frank Bresee brought along some fascinating and rare radio footage, there
was an excellent video presentation featuring clips from 1950s kids shows,
and Frank Buxton's group The Edge improvised during a comedy session that I
never wanted to end. Plus, the image of Hal Stone cuing his nearly
seven-foot-tall "Superman" announcer John Jensen by standing on a chair and
pointing aggressively is one that will stick me for quite awhile.
As always, it was great to reconnect with many of my favorite people and
chat with new friends as well - particularly to finally meet Dennis Crow,
the "Cinnamon Bear" expert par excellance, who hosted two very well done
recreations from the series. Larry Albert was his usual gregarious self -
and, thanks to the "Duffy's Tavern" show, we even got to hear his singing
voice. (Who knew Dr. Watson was a boogie-woogie blues man?) Terry Campbell
did her usual impressive job coming up with rare goodies for the silent
auction, too, including a few raffle items that most of you reading this
would have loved to buy a chance to win.
You can be sure I'll be back to attend Showcase 2007. For those of you who
missed [removed], all I can say is be sure to plan now for next year. If
it's half as entertaining as this past weekend was, you'll be very glad that
you did!

I got to pondering this the other day: If Ezra and Hal had
been destined to become cohorts on the same series, what
director would have cast the first Stone?

Hi - one of our local Chevy dealers, Polar Chevrolet Mazda, has a
"spokesbear" named Pauly Bear. I'm thinking someone in their marketing
department may remember Parley Baer. A link to their latest ad is
below.

My question is, does anyone else know of any other current advertising
that may have an OTR link, however weak?

Subject: Naomi (Nan Warren) Zaslow
There is an article on page R1 of today's Wall Street Journal on seniors
writing their memoirs. One of the seniors profiled is Naomi (Nan Warren)
Zaslow, who will be a guest at this year's Friends of Old Time Radio
Convention (October 19 - 22, Newark, [removed]).
I'm not sure this link will work for non-subscribers but if it does, you can

Ms. Warren, in addition to being a Let's Pretender, also appeared with Eddie
Cantor and Ethel Merman and later as a television writer shared a workspace
with Ernie Kovacs, so she'll have some great stories to tell.

Nazi Old Time Radio
When I first started working on Words at War (Scarecrow Press, 2002), my book
about World War II radio, for a while I considered discussing WWII related
German, Soviet and British radio as well as US radio. Some other time I will
comment about British radio (radio drama) during the war.
The other day some notes popped up from a file with the titles of radio plays
that Goebbels' Ministry of Propaganda put out over the airwaves. Some of you
may interested in the subjects of the following half dozen plays:
1. A Radio Play for November 9th (commem0oating the Beer Hall Putsch)
2. German Passion 1933 - the conflict between Good and Evil in the light of
Germany's "dilemma" following the end of World War I
3. The Deutsche Reichmarine (2 Aug. 1933) re rearmament
4. A People in a Foreign Land - pan Germanism's concern for German speaking
minorities in foreign countries
5. Saboteur - the fate of individuals caught spying against the Reich
6. The Flight Home - - "Persecuted" Nazis flee from Austria to Germany
I have neither the texts of any of these nor any specific information about
their location. But I thought their titles (and themes) might be of interest
to some people. I do have the complete text of one esoteric Nazi era radio
play that a deceased friend of mine translated into English. Her work is
copyright protected so I do not feel free to lend it to anyone just to
satisfy his [removed] might lend it for scholarly purposes

I was told, when I was very little, never to bring home Crisco instead of
Spry. They both looked exactly like each other, but for pie crusts, only Spry
would do. The person who told me that was My Mother, and she should know.
Thanx,
