Subject: Virtual Oldtime Radio Convention
Hi,
Recently Bob Acosta asked John and me to interview Jack French for this
convention. We did the interview last Sunday and it will air on the
internet as you have already red.
A recent Business trip took me to Maryland where I hoped to catch up with
Jack, but work prevailed and we didn't get together. So I was delighted to
have the opportunity along with John to chat for 30 minutes with him about
his book, his career with the FBI, and OTR collecting.
I hope you will listen to all events regarding this convention.
Also, Walden Hughes and I got together last Saturday in an attempt to just
chat about radio in general.
I understand that Walden will be airing that conversation this evening, June 4.
We plan monthly future chats, all to be heard on Yesterday USA.

Subject: Brothers Conway and Sanders, detectives
extraordinaire
06-04-05
Ron Sayles writes:
I just read with interest an article in the April 2005 issue of the
REPS newsletter. It is about "The Adventures of Frank Race" and in
the article the author, who shall remain anonymous, stated that Tom
Collins was the brother to George Sanders. Wasn't that Tom Conway?
Yes, this is true. George Sanders was famous for his role as "The
Falcon" in the movie series. He was so famous, as a matter of fact, that
he was afraid of becoming type-cast and decided to leave the series. His
real-life brother, Tom Conway, took over for George Sanders.
In "The Falcon's Brother", 1942, the Falcon is killed, in the personage
of George Sanders. Tom Conway (his real-life brother) plays the role of
his brother, who takes over for him in his glibly suave fight against
crime.
Fast-forward 4 years. Basil Rathbone is so famous as Sherlock Holmes
that he fears he's becoming type-cast ... and leaves the series. Sound
familiar? That was all Petri wine needed. They dropped the show. Kreml
Hair Tonic picked it up in the fall, and guess who took over for the
type-cast Basil Rathbone. Yassir -- Tom Conway.
He seems to have made part of a career at taking over for type-cast
detectives.
Best regards,
Jim Arva

I have XM and love it too!. There are two alternative ways. I use the
tiny $99 Roady that my son bought for me. It can also be used in the
house with a home kit which consists of an antenna (with, I think a 25
foot lead) and an AC power cube. I think I paid $39 for it, so I use it
in the house attached to some powered computer speakers.
The second way is to get XM--or at least some channels--is over the
internet, which is free with the other service. Works like a charm.
Paul Gough
Unfortunately, XM's OTR channel is not available on-line. One has to pay the
folks at When Radio Was for that service.
However, I have a third way to listen to XM out of the car. I have recently
purchased the XM MyFi MP3 player. I paid $199 for it new, and if one orders it
before July 1st, XM thorws in a free Roady2 player as well (2 radios for the
price of one!). The MyFi is SUPPOSED to work like an I-Pod kind of satellite
[removed] up to 5 hours recording time. Since I haven't received
either the MyFi or the Roady2 yet, I can't speak to it's quality. I'll let
you
know what I find out!
I have been using the original XM Delphi for years and love it. It moves
pretty effortlessly between the car and my house, and I have it plugged into
my
home stereo when I'm at home. The only problem I've had with it is some parts
of the house (like my study) do not have an adequate sky for the receiver to
work, but I hooked up an FM transmitter to my stereo (it plugs into the
headphone jack) and just broadcast that throughout the house to pick it up.

My new novel, Martyr's Cry: a mystery for hopeless romantics, is available

[ADMINISTRIVIA: If you already have a Roady2, you can get a walkman-like
battery-powered case for it:

...ok, ok, so it costs more than the Roady2 does; but if you already _have_
the Roady2, it's cheaper than a MyFi and second-radio [removed] --cfs3]
