Folks;
PLEASE disregard the final message in the most recent issue; I _thought_ I
removed it, but there have been some minor computer issues I've been dealing
with over the last few days and clearly the message wasn't pulled from the
Digest in time. It was from a "hit-and-runner" (someone who subscribes to the
mailing list, spams it with sales info, and then immediately unsubscribes)
who has no interest in OTR or the Digest, only in trying to sell a common
record for much more than it's worth.
My apologies.
Charlie

Subject: Fibber & Molly and the war
Some time back I also observed the idea that many Fibber shows during the
war dealt with show themes. In fact, I looked at a log of all the shows
they did between 12/7/41 and 8/14/45 and I think I figured that about 20%
directly related to homefront war efforts. The covered scrap drives,
housing for war workers (where the McGee's took in Alice Darling,) rationing
of various types, scrap drives, war bond sales and so on and so on.
Lots of shows had public service announcements before or after each
broadcast in support of these efforts. Many shows had all-servicemen
audiences. There were broadcasts from various bases and hospitals. But I
think it would be difficult to find a show that had so many actual plot
lines on those subjects.
Makes one wonder just who was behind it? How much input did Jim and Marion
Jordan have in story development? Was this all Don Qui9nn's idea?
Johnson's Wax? This could make a book all by itself.
One of the lines I remember occurred on Tuesday, December 9, 1941--two days
after Pearl Harbor. This is the episode known as "I Can Get it for You
Wholesale." The mayor wanted a new globe for his office. Molly asked him
if he wanted one with Japan on it. "Of course," replied his honor. Molly's
comeback was, "Then you'd better hurry!"
Such was the sentiment on that day!

Subject: Lum and Abner during the war
Can anyone name other shows that had many WWII related plots on an ongoing
basis? Maybe it was more common than I know?
Lum and Abner seemed to plug War Bonds an awful lot. I'm listening to a
storyline right now that takes place after the war where they've hired a
former WAC to be the general manager of their store, and managed to get in a
plug for Victory Bonds, too!
One episode dealt with the death of Robert Blevins (a Pine Ridge boy) in the
war, and the community's resolve to give even more to the War Loan Drive.
Also, Abner's daughter, Pearl, joined the military as a nurse, and ration
stamps and black market goods were discussed (imagine that, for a show set
in a grocery store!).
Miles Laboratories often gave up its commercial time for war-themed PSAs, as

I imagine many other shows acted similarly.

Jim Cox Says,
I don't know that anybody has ever mentioned it on this forum but I'm
continually amazed every time I hear it, how many radio sleuths are
suggested in the lyrics.
Don't stop there, Jim.
The Coasters also had a B side called The Shadow Knows.
One of my favorite lines is " You better mind your P's and Q's, and your M's
and N's and O's because the,
Shadow knows. The, Shadow knooows"
There's even a laugh at the end of the tune.
I love the Coasters. Both tunes were penned by Leber and Stoler.
