Subject: Obsolete & Not-So-Obsolete
After another internet look, I found that Ipana Toothpaste is now being
manufactured & sold in national drug stores. Supposedly, it left the
shelves in the 1980's & is back. Bromo Seltzer is still being
manufactured & sold - I can't find that it ever stopped. Richard Hudnut
(long deceased) introduced the DuBarry Line of Cosmetics, which is still
being sold. One ad about Dubarry Cosmetics states, "The conservative
clientele of Alexander Hudnut's drug store were among the world's wealthiest
women". (Maybe "Alexander" was a son??!!) I believe that the only "Hudnut"
items are vintage items sold throughout the antique & collectible world.
(Wish I could afford one). That's my "Penne's" worth & final on this
subject.

In a message dated 1/17/2006 9:40:46 PM Eastern Standard Time,
[removed]@[removed] writes:
Some years ago, Tom Lewis wrote a book called "Empire Of The Air" which
tells the intertwined stories of Armstrong, Lee de Forest, and David
Sarnoff. It's really the story of the beginning of broadcasting, and an
excellent book.
<snip>
I've read the book, seen the video, and heard the radio play, and think
the audio version tells the story best of all. Has anybody
else encountered all three versions? Do you agree with my assessment?
Hey Rich,
Yes, I definitely agree with your assessment. The book was excellent and
told the fascinating story of the birth of broadcasting. The TV version was
good though rather slow moving, more a documentary than a story. But the
audio
version is the most concise and entertaining of all, dramatizing the story
these broadcast pioneers.

Subject: Gotham Radio Players present TOKYO TOURIST
BUREAU
Although not really OTR, I hope you'll indulge this announcement for our
fans that are part of this [removed]
The Gotham Radio Players are proud to present the world premiere of a new
radio play from the pen of award-winning author Darren Callahan. We welcome
you to THE TOKYO TOURIST BUREAU.
"The evidence, shot very poorly, of my wife getting on an airplane. Not
much evidence at all, is it? You see? You see, don't you? The grain of the
eight-millimeter is, admittedly, pretty bad. But it looks like her. Red,
straight hair to the shoulders. And that dress, a little stained. With
flowers,
her favorite. The body, the bosom. I'm fairly certain. But I've been
known to be wrong."
Join us and meet Mr. Aldo, who may be a detective. He is assisting Mr.
Carter, whose wife may be missing. She was last seen entering the Tokyo
Tourist
Bureau, run by the inscrutable Mr. Daquel and his assistant, Hanna, who may
be more involved than they seem.
This 30-minute surrealist comedy, from the talented author who gave us UNCLE
ANT and the Gotham Radio Players' own THE WAVE, will be performed *live*
this coming Sunday as part of WBAI's "The Golden age of Radio".
"The Golden Age of Radio"
Sunday, January 22
7:00 PM (Eastern)
WBAI, [removed] FM in the NYC area
The program can also be heard over the Internet at [removed], and
you will be able to listen to an archive of the broadcast at WBAI's website
for about 2 weeks afterwards.
Please join us for a visit to the TOKYO TOURIST BUREAU. You'll never think
of the zoo in the same way again.
Steve Lewis
director, Gotham Radio Players
The mission of the Gotham Radio Players is to bring new productions of
classic radio programs of the 1930's, 40's and 50's to the airwaves of the
new
millennium, as well as showcase original scripts written by the emerging
audio
dramatists of today. The Gotham Radio Players are featured regularly in live
performances on WBAI-FM, which are rebroadcast on other radio stations across
the country, and can be heard worldwide via the Internet. We also appear
annually at the "Friends of Old Time Radio" Convention, and at other
performances in the NYC metropolitan area.

Subject: Ranger rebroadcasts
In a recent OTR Digest posting, Jim Taylor asks about the Lone Ranger
rebroadcasts that began following the last live broadcast on Sept. 3, 1954.
These were done under the auspices of Special Recordings, Inc headed by Fred
Flowerday. Fred Foy supplied many of the commercials, and Jay Michael did
some as well. The Ranger episodes from 1950 on were preserved on tape as
well as transcription via Chicago. AS near as I can determine, the tapes
were of the live broadcast at 7:30 EST, not the feed to Chicago at 7:00.
Therefore, the versions released by SRI and the complete transcriptions
differ slightly. But more significantly, SRI edited down the episodes to
make room for more commercial time and station promos, so that they do not
contain the complete episode. All of the commercials were new, they are not
the commercials that were broadcast live. I don't know if NBC promoed the
Ranger rebroadcasts. Many of these, which aired 5 days a week, were
previously used by ABC for their rebroadcasts.
For a complete listing, see Terry Salomonson's Lone Ranger log, which is
available from Terry at [removed].

We used Ipana during the war (WWII for you young folks) and I remember the
colors on the tube as having yellow background with radiating red stripes
ala Nipponese
battle flag. I wonder if this adversely affected their sales after 7
December 1941. I looked for a
picture of that packaging and finally found a monochromatic ad from 1940
that showed the Battle Flag
type tube.
Here is a link to a picture of a 1941 Dental Health Achievement Certificate

In regards to many products no longer available that once were a
staple of OTR.
The "Old Country Store" in Vermont has many of the discontinued
products and will search and carry others if requested. I have misplaced the
last
catalog I had from them but go to Google and you will find out thier address,
both snail mail and email.
Growing (68 now)up I listened to many of the programs originating from
Chicago and Detroit. We lived half way between Chicago and St. Paul and with
a tall outside antenna I could receive many of the 50,000 watt clear channel
boomers. Chicago, New Orleans, Denver, Salt Lake and Detroit.
I had and old Phillco that my dad hooked up with earphones so the rest
of the family wouldn't be disturbed late at nightby the Lone Ranger or The
Green Hornet.

Subject: Harry S. Goodman?
Since there have been a number of postings recently supplying information to
the query about the Ziv syndication company, I'm wondering if anybody knows
anything about another distributor of transcription programs, Harry S.
Goodman Productions. I recently came across a review from 1958 about a
Monday through Friday bloc of his series being broadcast on a Philadelphia
station (in a kind of "Mystery Hour" format). The titles included ones that
are familiar to us--LET GEORGE DO IT, PERIL--and others that I didn't
recognize.
What ties in to my own research here was the fact that one of the shows the
Goodman company was offering was ADVENTURE INTO FEAR. Collectors know this
title as the Australian version (ca. 1956) of THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER. But
did Goodman import the Australian recordings into this country and release
them, or is his ADVENTURE INTO FEAR his own production? And, if so, are they
different scripts from the MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER originals?
Anybody know?

Subject: Repeat broadcasts
Just a little observation about repeat broadcasts of OTR episodes.
I have noticed that OTR episode repeats or rebroadcasts tend fall into four
categories. I would like someone to confirm or refute my theory.
The four categories are:
1. A direct repeat of the original transcription disk complete with
original
commercials.
2. A repeat of the original transcription disk with new commercials added.
3. A new version with the same cast. In this case, there are small
changes
in terms of timing and reading of script.
4. A whole new version with a new cast.
I have noticed this with Escape and Suspense, I haven't had a chance to
listen to all the duplicate shows that I have, and before anyone asks, I
don't mean the East and West Coast versions of the episodes. I mean the
various repeats, I think that Sorry, Wrong Number was done at least six
times.
