Subject: Re: Transitions to TV from radio

Like Kermit Anderson, I am mystified by Kenneth Clarke's posting last
week about programs he somehow feels did better on radio than TV.
"What's My Line" is only known to some people as having ever been on
radio because that was mentioned on the close of the TV program for the
short time the radio version existed. (Note that the few AFRS versions
in circulation are all TV soundtracks from several years after the short
radio run. There are rumors that ONE legit radio episode exists, but
that seems to still be just a rumor.) What evidence do you have that
there ever was a radio version of "To Tell The Truth"??? And what
careers did "What's My Line", "The Quiz Kids" and "Information Please"
"act as springboards" for?? Celebrity panelists are usually
celebrities BEFORE being chosen to be on a celebrity panel.

"The Goldbergs" had a twenty year history before they hit television,
and soon ran into difficulty when one of the lead actors was
blacklisted. The program never recovered. "People Are Funny" also had
a decade of radio before it went on TV, and like "You Bet Your Life",
continued on radio mainly as a space-filler on NBC Radio's 1950's
desperation prime-time schedule for an ever shrinking radio audience.
Once TV came to their city and their living room, these radio versions
were rarely ever listened to again. I would put them into the category
of radio programs which transferred very well over to TV, and I am
mystified why Kenneth Clarke thinks otherwise. "I Love Lucy" was more
popular on TV than on radio because it never was on radio, unless you
are comparing it with "My Favorite Husband." I never listened to "The
Thin Man" on radio but did watch it on TV. When was it on?

What kind of source material was researched for this posting? It
doesn't seem to make much sense.

[ADMINISTRIVIA: [removed] material does not need to be researched before
making a post to the OTR Digest. We're all here to talk about the programming
and the times, and certainly to learn much about it. But it's assumed that
any failures of memory we might have will be gently corrected by others
[removed] way, we all can gain the knowledge we seek without
pre-researching our posts. --cfs3]

Subject: Firebugs in OTR
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Marty asks about OTR arsonists, and that brought up a memory for me.

When I started as a commercial radio DJ (about 1970), I bought a reel of Wild
Tracks - short snippets culled from myriad sources. You used them as part of
your schtick. Cartoon characters shouting "Look out below!", a crook saying
"Get those hands up NOW!", and a lot of other such stuff.

One of the lines was, "Right now he's planning a slum fire that'll kill
thousands!"

Fast-forward a quarter of a century. I was listening to a Shadow episode, and
that exact same line jumped right out at me. After 25 years, I identified the
source of one of those Wild Tracks.

So, back to the subject at hand, there is at least one Shadow episode about a
mad arsonist.

I'm at a loss as to how to spell Joan Lorring in my next book, as I am
finishing the manuscript. Radio scripts spell it both Loring and Lorring.
Anyone know the accurate spelling (from an obit or family relative who can
