Subject: [removed] Kaltenborn Comment/Question Responses

Hi - thanks to everyone who responded to my questions, both on the digest
and to me directly. I appreciate all the information I got, and, as always,
appreciate everyone's knowledge and helpfulness on this digest.

I showed the director the comments from all of you, and he said "Well, we
just won't use his name. We'll just call him the radio announcer". Oh
well, at least we tried!

Thanks again,

Ron

Subject: Wild Bill Hickok

1956- Wild Bill Hickok (and Jingles) rode off into the sunset on Mutual
for the last time, having been on radio since 27 May 1951.

Does anyone know whether this was one of the handful of programs that
began on TV and then expanded to radio? I know that Wild Bill and
Jingles (Guy Madison and Andy Devine) were on TV around the same time,
sponsored by Kellogg's Sugar Corn Pops.

Interesting sidelight to this: In Jack Benny's Shower of Stars special
in February 1958, in which he finally celebrated his 40th birthday,
Rochester (Eddie Anderson) had just suffered a heart attack, so Andy
Devine, who apparently was already slated to be on the show later as
himself, substituted for Rochester as Jack's substitute Butler, Andy.
The similarity of his voice to that of Rochester was noted. At one
point in the sketch, Jack called, "Oh Jingles!" and Andy replied, "Yes,
Wild Bill!"
