Lulubelle Wiseman (of Lulubelle & Skyland Scotty, on the WLS National Barn

Subject: Of pizza rolls and Reagan

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned this recording during these past
two weeks. Tying together three recent threads: comic strip characters on
OTR (Batman), the Lone Ranger pizza rolls TV commercial (Stan Freberg), and
future politicians on OTR (Ronald Reagan)--please don't forget the
wonderfully insightful recording that was included on Stan Freberg's album
"Underground Radio Show No. 1" Capitol T/ST 2551 "Shaft Theater: The
Flackman and Reagan."

While I am here, someone questioned whether there really was a Lark
Cigarettes commercial that had used the William Tell Overture finale. Yes,
and it even had "lyrics." "Have a Lark, have a Lark, have a Lark today . .
." etc. The Jeno's ad "Show us your pizza rolls pack" was a take-off on
the Lark ad that had people driving thru town with large signs "Show Us
Your Lark Pack." This ad was notable at its time for having gone
COMPLETELY over the head of all of the censors on the different networks
and stations who somehow had never heard the expression about
exhibitionists showing their lark. That is the reason why the signs in the
ads (which were also featured in print ads and billboards) asked to show us
your Lark PACK. (By the way, no beads were harmed during the filming of
the commercials.)

Oh, and to tie these two threads together, just as cigarette ads are now
banned from American broadcasting, so was "The Flackman and Reagan" banned
from California broadcasting during the 1966 governor campaign. It was
because it would have triggered Section 315 equal opportunity issues for
any station that aired it. There wasn't any legislative action
specifically against it, it was just known that the Reagan campaign would
have asked for equal opportunity on any station heard in California which
aired it.

Subject: MLT cookbooks

I have some, acquired inexpensively on eBay. I collect cookbooks, and
am a great FM&M fan also. The back side of the cookbook usually
advertises the FM&M program and/or other programs as well. Pretty cool.

As you can imagine, the recipes--Pet Milk plays an important role,
naturally--are very 50's-ish: Macaroni Loaf with Creamed Tuna, Prune
Whip, Rarebit Rice Ring, Fruit Tapioca, Frankfurter Dinner, Mock
Chicken Patties. On the other hand, there are some surprisingly
modern-sounding recipes that I might even like to try sometime.

I would also like to know if there are any MLT programs in circulation.
According to the ad on the back of the cookbook, "Radio's Favorite Food
Expert," Mary Lee Taylor, could be heard every Saturday morning on NBC;
see your local newspaper for station and time. I wonder if it was an
actual half-hour show, or a shorter filler-type thing. There was a
"Recipe of the Week" and a "Story of the Week." From the little promos
at the end of some FM&M shows, I gather that the "Story of the Week"
was usually a soap-opera sort of thing geared toward the audience of
housewives.

First of all .. thanks to Dan Hughes for leaving a note on May
17th concerning Lone Ranger Radio Days hosted by Mt. Carmel, IL
on May 15th. It was a pleasure to meet and visit with Dan. As
you know, Mt. Carmel is the birthplace of Brace Beemer. We had a
good turn out with people coming from New York, Florida, North
Carolina, Georgia and Maine just to name a few. I'm sure I
didn't get to meet all the "out of towners" who attended and I'm
sorry I didn't. I just received my June copy of The Silver
Bullet and those of you who do not subscribe to that publication
have missed a beautiful color issue containing an excellent
report on the event including pictures. Joe Southern has gone
above and beyond with his latest issue of The Silver Bullet. A
hearty Hy .. Yo .. Silver to Joe.

Subject: Wendell Corey

I am enjoying the thread of performers entering politics. My contribution
is Wendell Corey, who won a seat on the Santa Monica City Council in 1965.
He later ran for the Republican nomination for Congress from his district.

Corey had an unusual radio show, which I have never heard, entitled
"McGarry and His Mouse." Jack French writes an amusing, detailed discussion
of this obscure program in his new book, PRIVATE EYELASHES [BearManor
Media, 2004]. This quotation from the book says it all, "Mercifully, only
three programs have survived from this abysmal series so that future
generations will not have to waste much time on it." (p. 173) That was
actually the kindest thing the author said about the program. Has anybody
on this list, other than Jack, actually listened to this NBC entry (also on
Mutual)? French notes that it was actually fairly popular in its day.

Subject: Jiminy Cricket - Encyclopedia song

Forgive me for an off-topic post. I'm looking for a recording of
"Encyclopedia," a song performed on TV as early as 1955 by Disney's
Jiminy Cricket character. It may have been on the old Mickey Mouse Club
show or possibly the evening Disney show, or perhaps some special. In
it, Jiminy Cricket spells out the title, E-N-C-Y-C-L-O-P-E-D-I-A. I
believe the song was written by then-head Mousketeer Jimmie Dodd.

If anyone has a copy or an idea where I might find it in the next couple
of days, please contact me off-list.

Thank you!

Here are a few other actors that went into politics:

Sheila Kuehl who played Zelda on the TV series The Many Loves of Dobie
Gillis, became a California State Senator.

Fred Grandy left the TV series Love Boat and became a US Congressman, from I
believe, Iowa.

Clint Eastwood became mayor of Carmel, California.

Ben Jones, who played the character Cooter on the TV series The Dukes of
Hazzard, was elected from the state of Georgia to the US Congress and served
from 1988 to 1992.

Subject: "Orphaned" works

I know that there are people on the OTR mailing list who write books and
articles about OTR and who produce and sell copies of OTR programs. There is
currently a lawsuit called Kahle v. Ashcroft that challenges changes to [removed]
copyright law that have created a large class of 'orphan works' -- creative
works which are out of print and no longer commercially available, but which
are still regulated by copyright. It seems to me that a lot of OTR programs
would fall into that category. To help make their case the litigators are
collecting personal experiences of people who have had problems using such
older works because of copyright restrictions. I'm not here to beat a drum
about copyright law, but if you would like to contribute a story of your own
experience, here's the website: [removed]

I have to wonder how many politicians made entertainment-related appearances
on OTR. I know the mayor of Cleveland appeared on "The Bob Hope Show" when
Hope did his Pepsodent show from that city, and surely there had to be others.
I'm guessing Hoover, Roosevelt, or Truman never made any such comical
appearances on radio? Truman, I know, appeared on Jack Benny's half hour TV

once.

Will it resume? When you turn it off will it restart where you left off?

Recently I mentioned that it does that in a sort-of way. Today I have to
amend that statement.

There is a stop button and a play/pause button. There is also a power
switch that selects radio/off/CD player. If you push the stop button or
turn it off, it forgets everything. If you press pause, it will remember
where it was and resume playing from that point.

The amendment is that you need to ensure the disc is stopped when you press
the pause button. This morning I heard some noise coming from the direction
of the player and when I looked closely, it was doing a continuous seek of
the disc. It had been in that mode for about four hours. The player has a
memory function similar to the anti-shock memory in small portables. As
long as the disc is stopped, it seems to remember where to resume the
program. If the disc is not stopped, it seems it will continuously thrash.

This player is not the be-all to end-all of MP3 players. But it is cheap
and the Walmart return policy permits you to return it within 90 days if it
does not satisfy your needs. In my situation, it provides me with what I
want while I try finding a replacement motor for the Rio-Volt.

In trying to get rid of some of the stuff that's been collecting for years &
I just don't need anymore I've run accross some back issues of several
Oldtime Radio club news magazines that I would like to get rid of:
Nara News, 24 issues - 1990 #1 thru 1998 #2. I think there are a couple of
issues missing but I'm not sure because they went through a period when they
missed a few issues.
Old Time Radio Digest - 1991 thru 1998, 43 thru 86, with issue 76 missing.
Past Times, 11 issues, 20 thru 32.
Sperdvac Radiogram, 7 issues from 1995 thru 1997.

The first person I hear from can have them for free, all I would want is the
cost of postage. They weight about 10 pounds. I figure it would probably
cost about 6 or 7 dollars to ship by mail.
You can contact me off line.

All this discussion of radio coverage of big events reminded me of something.
I've always wished that there were recordings of WGN's coverage of the Scopes

transcription disk would have been the only option, and I don't think they

Subject: Sky Captain and the World of OTR

I've started reading the Kevin Anderson novelization of the upcoming
movie "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" and ran across the
following passage:

"It's coming into sight now above the Palisades! They'[removed] they're
huge! They're crossing Sixth Avenue. Fifth Avenue. A [removed] a
hundred yards away."

Boy, did that ever resonate with me. Yes, it's not quite word-for-word
from Orson Welles' infamous 1938 "War of the Worlds" broadcast! I even
ran and checked my radio script (in Howard Koch's "The Panic Broadcast"
paperback) just to make sure.

Even though I'm only a fourth of the way through the novel, I've already
noticed various OTR references. Including the above homage to the old
Mercury Theater broadcast. Of course in the movie novelization, the
passage refers not to Martian machines, but to Dr. Totenkopf's deadly
giant robots.

If anyone else is reading this new paperback novel, perhaps you can add
some other OTR references that I've overlooked. I'm sure there must be
some.
