Subject: Record Sales/White Christmas

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the organization that
certifies "gold" and "platinum" record sales, has only kept track of such
things since 1958, well past the prime of Bing Crosby's recording years. So
whether "White Christmas" or "Candle in the Wind" is the biggest selling
single of all-time will forever be dispute. (Princesses may come and go but
Christmas is [removed])

Popularity in a changing world can be measured in funny ways. The percentage
of the population that purchased a copy of the recordings has never been
figured. That would be like adjusting box-office sales to inflation. That
might be interesting but hardly settles anything.

As to a few of the other points "advanced" during this discussion on "White
Christmas," Dennis Crosby committed suicide in May of 1991, Lindsey in
December of 1989. I would suggest "Bing in Perspective" by our good friend
Steven Lewis. ([removed]~[removed])

Subject: Re: Radio Spirits Singles (Radio Yesteryear)

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if Radio Yesteryear still around? And if so, where could
I get a catalog?

I was also wondering if anyone knows of other OTR companys that have
catalogs similar to Radio Spirits?

Thanks for your help!

Subject: Re: The little old tile layer

My buddy "Lois Culver" made a very astute observation about the
" work-a-day attitude of many OTR talent".

If your profession was a tile-layer, you got a call for a job, you did the
job and got paid for [removed] waited for the next job. You did not
afterwards think about the impact your tile job may have had on everyone
walking on that tile in the future.

If you were an [removed] thing!

Actually, Elizabeth, I just laid a new tile floor in our kitchen for my
lovely wife Dorothy. I had learned many crafts from my Dad who was in the
home alteration business. (He made me work for him on the off days when I
didn't have an radio acting assignment). He didn't think it was right for a
young man laying around the house while he had to work for a living. :)

I can only tell you I get more impact and pleasure looking at my beautiful
new tile floor every time I walk on it, and more self satisfaction at my
tile laying prowess, than I ever did following my performance on a radio
show.

Go figure.

Subject: Kids of OTR actors

Accidentally I ran across another child of an OTR actor who is in the
business. It's an interesting story.

The OTR actress is Charlotte Holland who worked on Inner Sanctum, Suspense,
Eternal Light, Mysterious Traveler and for 3 years on Guiding Light as Trudy
Bauer. She married the actor Sam Wanamaker (who also did some radio work)
and in 1952 when they were in London where Sam was working on a film it
became apparent that Sam was going to be blacklisted back in the states so
he stayed on and the family lived and worked there from then on.

Their middle daughter, Zoe Wanamaker is a very accomplished and acclaimed
actress. She was born in NY and was three years old when her family moved
to London. She won a Tony for her performance as 'Electra' a few years
ago, just one of many awards she has received. She became a popular
celebrity when she starred in a BBC Series called 'Love Hurts' which is
currently showing on BBC America.

Sam Wanaker who died about 9 years ago spent more then 20 years on his
project to build an historical replica of the original Globe Theatre in
London at the place where it originally existed. It seemed like an
impossible dream but it is now a reality. Sadly he died while it was
still under construction. Charlotte Holland died a few years later.

Subject: _The Unsuspected_: on TCM tonight

Officially, make the airdate:

Subject: Raymond Edward Johnson

When Raymond died he left everything including his house to his caretakers.
Many of you may remember them, including Teresa, because they brought Raymond
to our convention every year. All of Raymond's personal and radio material
is still there. Teresa wants to sell it. She can't afford to give it away.
If any of you have a thought please email me or call me (203) 248-2887. I
will be away this weekend. i told Teresa that if anybody or group was
interested, I would let her know. Jay Hickerson

Subject: [removed] ONE??

Beware Jay, there were TWO songs called "Yesterday" and the biggest hit
before the 1964 Beatles tune, was the one written in the 30's or 40's and was
made huge by Billie Holiday as well as others.
Could be the numbers have been combined to create a monster.
I prefer the Billie Holiday one myself, better lyrics and musical changes
as well as a very moving interpretation.
