Subject: The Raggedy Man
Martin Grams asks whether his copy of the 78 of James Whitcomb Riley reading
The Raggedy Man and Little Orphant Annie could be as old as the 1912
recording date. Since you seem to be indicating that this is a 2-sided
disc, your copy is indeed a reissue since they were first issued as two
separate single sided discs, Victor 60075 and 60076. These purple label
discs were coupled onto blue label double-sided discs around 1922, yours
being Victor 45190. Sally Hamlin did electrically recorded versions around
1927 on the regular Victor black label series, and the Riley originals were
probably deleted soon thereafter. Early purple label copies would have Grand
Prize labels, later ones would have Bat Wing labels. Early blue label
copies would have Bat Wing labels, and later ones might have Scroll labels.
They sold fairly well and are relatively common.

Subject: Harper Green who?
I found some paperwork that said lunches were provided and served to the
actors and actresses for a program by Harper Green. Can anyone tell me who
or what Harper Green was in California? Was it a company like Dunkin Donuts
or Starbucks?

RR King averred:
not only did Conan Doyle pointedly include his most notorious
fictional character in the short story but Welles cleverly sneaked
his own most notorious fictional creation into the radio version. In
fact, at one point, it sounds like Welles nearly speaks the character's
name.
And Randy from Mebane NC added:
I wondered if anyone else would notice that. If you listen
closely, he definitely says the first and middle names.
Okay, I hate to admit to being dull, but what character would that
be? The only Welles character I can think of whose middle name might
be remembered is John Foster Kane. If that was, indeed, the inside
joke in question, you both showed, I think, remarkable perspicacity.
Here's another little bit of coincidence; the name of the actress who
played the part of the heroine in the 1917 silent film serial version
of the story [removed] Holmes.

Joe Webb asked:
Many of the recordings in the late 50s and 60s of CBS shows and sports
events(like baseball games) seem to exist only because a lone radio
enthusiast
inthe Albany, NY took the time and spent the money on recording tape
topreserve the shows. Does anyone know who this collector was? Without the
effort of this person, many Johnny Dollar and Suspense shows would have been
forever lost tocollectors.
The probable answer is Radio Yesteryear was partially responsible. They
purchased recordings from collectors, and tried their best to buy original
masters, including transcription discs. If someone within Albany picked up the
broadcasts and recorded them, there is a chance that they are no longer
around. I say a chance, but if you get four differnet people claiming to be
the originator, take heed. Might want to contact Dave Goldin and ask him in
the form of a letter and see what reply you get. He has a pretty good memory
for such things.

I received a Philo Vance dated 4/29/43, sponsored by Raleigh and starring
John Emery. I looked on James Jones' newspaper logs and couldn't find it.
I
don't have Philo Vance listed in 1943 at all in my Ultimate History. Any
help? The episode title is "The Case of the Cellini Cup." Jay
