THE ADVENTURES OF SAM SPADE
"The Picture-Frame Caper"
Live! This Sunday, October 3rd
7:00pm (Eastern)
WBAI, [removed] FM in New York City
Webcast worldwide at [removed]
The Gotham Radio Players and Wildroot Cream Oil (again and again the choice
of men, and women and children, too!) are pleased to bring back to the
airwaves the greatest private detective of them all, Sam Spade, in a
long-lost
adventure that hasn't been heard since it's original broadcast more than 54
years ago.
Sam Spade goes Hollywood, when beautiful screen star Lois Beyrou hires him
to protect her from a stalker. But all is not as it seems. Before this
gruesome caper is over there's plenty of stealing and shooting, not to
mention a
punctured beret. Thrilling adventure! Love-crazed madness! Killer on the
loose! It's an "In-Between" picture, not good enough for movies and too good
for television. So break out that bottle of Missionary's Downfall, and join
us this coming Sunday, as Sam dictates to Effie the case he calls "The
Picture-Frame Caper," or "Hollywood is Cracked Up - to Be What It Is!"
I am also very pleased to announce that the Gotham Radio Players can soon be
seen performing live and in person at this year's Friends of Old-Time Radio
Convention. We will be offering a return engagement of our recent recreation
of Morton Wishengrad's acclaimed 1943 drama, "The Battle of the Warsaw
Ghetto." The 29th annual Friends of Old-Time Radio Convention takes place
October
21-24 at the Holiday Inn North, at Newark Liberty Airport. The performance
by the Gotham Radio Players can be seen that Friday, beginning at 4:45pm.
For further information about the Friends of Old-Time Radio Convention,
please
go to [removed].
The Gotham Radio Players were formed in 1991 by a group of enthusiasts for
the heyday of radio drama. Our mission is to bring new productions of classic
radio programs of the 30's, 40's, and 50's to the airwaves of the new
millennium, as well as showcase original scripts written by the emerging
audio
dramatists of today. Now under the leadership of producer Max Schmid and
director
Steven Lewis, the Gotham Radio Players are featured regularly in live
performances on WBAI-FM, at the annual "Friends of Old-Time Radio"
Convention, and
at other personal appearances in the New York City metropolitan area.

"Spooky", as in all those radio shows we all can name which set the stage
for fright and shock. Could it have something to do with the historical
context, WWII and Korea, which were a real life horror show in real time?
This discussion came up in a horror writers forum, and people suspect the
answer is yes. Currently, written and movie horror is making a slow
resurgence. There are a lot more horror movies being released. With the
current war in Iraq and terrorism, that would follow the theory.
As far as TV of the later period, my opinion is that they were much stricter
about what they would show on screen, so the description of a monster
killing someone on radio would pale in comparison to showing it on screen in
gory detail. After all, the best special effects are in the mind, as we OTR
fans know. :-)

Legendary DJ Scott Muni dead at 74
Personality dominated New York airwaves for decades
Wednesday, September 29, 2004
About a week or two ago, someone reading the list emailed me about one
of my posts back then about the NBC Chimes, emailed me and we had a
brief exchange about radio nostalgia. He noticed that I am in New
Orleans and wondered if I remembered Scott Muni's radio program when
Muni had the overnight program on WSMB-1350 here in New Orleans in the
1950s.
That was before my time, as I was born in 1961. I remember the late
Larry Regan with a music and talk show overnight most nights of the week
on WSMB-1350 in the 1960s/70s/80s, and off-and-on with his overnight
talk show on WWIW-1450 in the 1980s and WTIX-690 in the 1990s.
And Larry Regan, a local personality, passed away in June 1999. He was
well into his 70s at the time; during his local music and talk show in
the overnight hours, he might put on a 15-minute Bickersons skit or some
other old time radio show for 15 to 30 minutes.
Anyhow, I have heard the name Scott Muni, but as I mentioned, his days
here in New Orleans on WSMB-1350 in the overnight hours was in the 1940s
and 50s, before I was born.
However, on Wednesday afternoon (29 September 2004), a current WSMB
talk host, another local perrennial radio legend, Tom Fitzmorris, who
does a "food" talk show, mostly about restaurant dining (not so much in
home cooking and recipes though but also a little of that too), happen
to mention the passing of Scott Muni and that Muni had been on WSMB in
the 1940s and 50s, and had still been doing a local show in New York
City. Also, Tom Fitzmorris (who I also remember doing a "food" and
dining talk show in the 1970s on the old WGSO-1280) is a fan of old time
radio programs but he doesn't play them on his own "Dining Around"
program though.

Someone may have already reported on this, but I received a flier in today's
mail from Oxford University Press--and John Dunning's OTR bible, On the Air:
The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio is currently on sale for $[removed] I don't
ever remember the price of the book being that low, and perhaps it would be
a good opportunity for someone new to the hobby to get a great deal on a
must-have book:
