Don't be confused that the page says the program is about Jamestown. Bob
comes in at about 29 minutes and is on for 10 minutes until the end of the
program.

Subject: Re: songs about the Hindenburg crash and more

I saw a reference on an airship website sometime back that famous folk
singer Huddie Ledbetter (known as Leadbelly) actually wrote a song shortly
after
the Hindenburg crashed. Has anybody ever heard this song? Does it really
exist or is this just another contemporary folk-music urban legend?

Radio Classics Live in Brockton, Mass was held at Massasoit Community
College this past weekend. There was a sold out crowd on Saturday night.
Friday featured a lively audience, but it was not sold out that evening.
There
were a mix of TV personalities along with OTRadio people and the usual cast
of
talented amateurs and singers. The sound effects this year were exceptional
The piano accompaniment was excellent but I miss having a live band, even a
three piece combo. There was a wide variety of program recreations along
with skits and excerpts from other shows. My eyes sort of glazed over during
the inductions into the Mass Broadcaster Hall of Fame
ceremonies---dedications/presentations and suchlike are of no interest to me
at all, but the rest of
the show was lots of fun. People living in the New England/New York area
should definitely think about attending next year's event.

Jim Cox otrbuff@[removed] reminded us that he still has a couple
more copies of "Radio Speakers" at $49 including shipping (instead of the
regular $59) and again I recommend that you take him up on this. I just got
back from the Association for Recorded Sound Collections Conference where a
copy was in the silent auction and went for $77. That several people were
willing to bid it up to way above the list price shows how good the book is.

Subject: hot bands vs. sweet bands

I've really been into big band remotes lately - perhaps a big band expert
could make some recommendations for the "hot" bands. Some of the sweet
bands are ok, but I didn't like Charlie Spivak, Leo Reisman, Orrin Tucker,
or Joe Reichman that much. I liked Erskine Hawkins, Cab Calloway, Randy
Brooks, Bunny Beregan, Cootie Williams, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, Tommy
Dorsey, Bob Crosby, Benny Goodman, and Blue Barron (although he wasn't
exactly a hot band). ANd I also like shuffle with Henry Busse and Swing n
Sway with Sammy Kaye. I also really like Harry the Hipster, though I
haven't found any remotes with him.

Subject: Consumer Reports article: Media conversion

I don't know if this is off-topic, but I just got the June, 2007
issue of 'Consumer Reports' magazine. It contains an article titled
"Go Digital - Turn LPs, tapes, photos, and home movies into CDs,
DVDs, or computer files".
Looks like it could be helpful, as it describes various ways to
transfer media content to different media, with recommendations as to
cost, convenience, etc.
Sorry, I can't quote a "newsstand price"; it's not printed on my
"subscriber's" copy.

Subject: Hollywood Walk of Fame sites

Recently the subject of the Hollywood Walk of Fame was mentioned, and
the question of whose stars' names referred to OTR actors.

This is the "official" Hollywood site:
[removed]

"There are 2 ways to search:
     * by clicking on a Category or
     * by typing in the name of the star
Categories
Television, Radio, Live Theatre/performance, Motion Pictures, Recording"

When I clicked on "Radio" the first three entries (for example) are:
	Hildegarde
6141 Hollywood Blvd.
   	Parkyakarkus
1708 Vine Street
   	Rochester
6513 Hollywood Blvd.

After these three, the list goes alphabetically, and ends with:
	Wendell Niles
1725 Vine Street
	Willard Waterman
1601 Vine Street
	William Bendix
1638 Vine Street

Next to each name is a space for "Description" but those spaces are
blank; maybe it's a "work in progress"?
Hope this gives you a flavor of the site.

Another site, Wikipedia, has its own list, whose format might be easier to use:

I've got an episode of "Crossword Quiz" where the host asked Bob Hope
'what has 10 letters and drives men wild?" Bob's answer: LANA TURNER.
Bob was widely known as a comedian who could respond to practically
any joke from any comedian at a moment's notice. (Probably from his days
in vaudeville.) While this was an asset during those days, it left little
time
to edit some of his remarks which he made on his radio. I daresay that he
wasn't the only comedian with roots in vaudeville comedy who had to adjust
their routines for radio audiences. I'm sure other comedians like George
Burns
and Gracie Allen, Eddie Cantor, WC Fields, and others had their particular
'moments'. One of the most memorable ones which comes to my mind is the
"Adam and Eve" skit performed by Don Ameche and Mae West on the
"Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy Show" which got her banned from radio
altogether. I also heard that comedians were not to even mention her name on
the air, or else.

Surely, Bob Hope wasn't the only comedian who did this.

As always,

Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Whatever Happened [removed] Isa Ashdown?

Over on a "Superman" discussion board, it was
mentioned that - based on production order - child
actress Isa Ashdown was the first to "fly" with George
Reeves on TV's ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN. That led me to
[removed], where I saw about a dozen TV credits from
1952-55. Then I did a Google search, and found that,
in J. David Goldin's artist index, she has 27 radio
credits between 1951-60. Mostly LUX RADIO THEATRE,
but a few other West Coast shows.

Anyway, is Isa still with us; have any of our friends
from SPERDVAC or REPS been in contact with her? This
is someone who (hopefully) would have some marvelous
memories to share.
