Subject: MICHAEL HAYDE'S SUPERMAN

Sometime ago, Martin Grams, whose reputation as a researcher and
writer in the world of OTR, I hold a deep regard, posted a book
review on the OTR Digest.,

. I recall Marty's review of Michael Hayde's "Flights of
Fantasy" a book about the radio and television adventures of
Superman, as going the extra mile in terms of praising the author
for his outstanding scholarship and noting how well the book
documented the most complete daily log of Superman programs . Coming
from Marty. whose book about GANGBUSTERS is a classic and should be
in the library of every true OTR fan, I made a mental note to
purchasw Hayde"s book, which by the way is published by Bear Manor publishers.

Falling prey to a habit that affects many of us, I put off
making the purchase until just a few days ago when, with apologies to
my good friend Ben Ohmart whose magic charm permits him to operate
the most successful and friendliest publishing company to serve the
world OTR from far away Japan, I instead made my purchase through Amazon.

Those in the hobby who know me, know also that I am a sucker for
any book dealing with old time radio. In more instances than I care
to admit, books purchased by me receive a quick scanning before being
assigned to a shelf .Only perhaps a few dozen of the close to 2000
volumes dealing with radio in my collection and not being read from
cover to cover

The Supermen book was delivered yesterday and I have yet to
put it down. It is everything and more i to was promised to Graham's
original review. From the very beginning of the Siegel-Schusrter
creation of the Man of Steel with more valuable information about the
radio adventures than has ever appeared elsewhere, this is indeed a
definitive volume, 533 pages which I hope to finish reading by this evening.

Dave Siegel (who by the way, has never met nor spoken to Mr. Hayde)

 From Those Were The Days

10/11

1936 Professor Quiz aired for the first time. It was the first
national quiz show on radio and lasted until 1948. Guests asked
Professor Quiz (Dr. Craig Earl) questions. If they were able to stump
the prof, they collected a $25 prize. Professor Quiz announcers were
Robert Trout and Arthur Godfrey. Sponsors included Kelvinator
refrigerators, Teel Shampoo and Velvet pipe tobacco.

1940 Glenn Miller recorded Make Believe Ballroom Time for Bluebird
Records at the Victor studios in New York City. It would become the
theme song for Make Believe Ballroom on WNEW, New York, with host Martin
Block.

10/12

1937 The longest running detective show debuted. Mr. Keen, Tracer of
Lost Persons lasted until 1955. Three different actors played the title
role, Bennett Kilpack was Mr. Keen the longest, and Arthur Hughes saw
the final show. Phil Clark also played the part. There were many more
than three sponsors Anacin, Kolynos (a toothpaste), BiSoDol antacid
mints, Hill's cold tablets, Heet liniment, Dentyne, Aerowax, RCA Victor
and Chesterfield cigarettes. Some are long gone, some are still around,
some don't advertise on radio anymore, and some are not allowed to.

10/14

1934 Folks had clean hands for 21 years beginning this day. The Lux
Radio Theater was heard on the NBC Blue [removed] and nearly every
famous Hollywood star over the next three decades appeared on the
program. Lux Radio Theater adapted novels, Broadway plays and Hollywood
films into radio's favorite dramatic series.

 From NYT Today in history

In 1943, the Radio Corporation of America completed sale of the NBC Blue
network to businessman Edward J. Noble for $8 million; the network was
renamed the American Broadcasting Company.

10/16

1939 Radio listeners welcomed The Right to Happiness on the NBC Blue
network. The 15 minute drama turned out to be one of the longest running
shows of its kind. It moved over to CBS in 1941, then back to NBC in
1942. Fourteen years later Right to Happiness returned to CBS where it
stayed until its last days in 1960. The show had a theme song, Song of
the Soul, and what seemed like a cast of thousands. It just took a lot
of different actors to play the continuing roles over a 21 year period.

1945 Barry Fitzgerald starred as Judge Barnard Fitz in His Honor, the
Barber, which debuted on NBC.

10/17

1919 The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) was formed.

1938 This was a big day in Tinseltown. NBC moved to the corner of
Sunset and Vine, the 'Crossroads of the World'. The new Hollywood Radio
City drew thousands of visitors ready to fill studio audience seats for
popular radio programs.

1938 Captain Midnight was heard on radio for the first time, on
Mutual. The Captain flew his single engine plane all over the place
fighting crime.

Subject: Cucamonga, Via Anaheim?

Like Glenn Mueller, I too would like Curtis Katz to confirm the existence of
the train line running from downtown Los Angeles, to Anaheim, Azusa, and
finally Cucamonga. I am more interested in Jack Benny than in railroads, but
it would not make geographical sense to go to Cucamonga via Anaheim. My guess
is that the name Cucamonga was an amusingly sounding location for listeners
who had never heard of it.

At the library the other day, I skimmed through the recent, widely-reviewed

It devotes a decent number of pages to the playwright's radio [removed] Bigsby

Cavalcade episode about Sacajawea is actually by Miller, not Robert L.
Richards.

The script was written by Robert L. Richards. Bigsby is mistaken. I have a
copy of the script
(both drafts) and it clearly says Robert L. Richards.

Mr. A. was spoken to by the author, early on.

But as the piece was going to be highly fictionalized, that was the extent
of his involvement.

Subject: Curtis Katz's Train Circle

Southern California old-timer Glenn Mueller inquires about the
research concerning the famous Jack Benny program's loudspeaker
announcement about the train leaving on Track # 5 for "Anaheim,
Azusa, and [removed]!"

As indicated in Oct 2009 issue of RADIO RECALL, railroad historian
Curtis L. Katz determined that the only train making such a trip in
1949 would be the Sante Fe "Daily Motor # 42" which left [removed] Union
Station and went to Azusa and Cucamonga, had a lunch stop in San
Bernadino, changed its number to # 43, and then returned to [removed] via
a different route, via Fullerton, including a stop at Anaheim.
Katz's research resulted in a lengthy article on this topic which was
first published in the Feb/Mar 1999 issue of "Nostalgia Digest &
Radio Guide" and was reprinted in the Winter 2000 issue of "Classic
Trains."

Railroad buff Katz is also a cartoonist for "Rail Fan & Railroad
Magazine" and he illustrated his "Classic Trains" piece with cartoons
of Benny and Frank Nelson.

Subject: The Mercury Theater

A number of years ago, Paul Stewart and Richard Wilson were invited to talk
at one of Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters NOSTALGIA NIGHTS.
We played the War of The World recording of the show, for that is what both
men wanted to talk about most.

Stewart and Wilson talked a great deal about how The Mercury Theater was put
on, through rehearsals up to airtime.
What I found most interesting was when Richard Wilson described the first
rehearsal of WofW, That rehearsal was recorded onto ETs.
Wells was there, directing and acting in the rehearsal. Wilson said that
about half way through the rehearsal Welles dropped his script to his side
and stopped right in his tracks, loudly yelling out "This is the worst script
we've ever done!"

Richard Wilson had that ET recording for years and told us he would have
brought it to PPB for us to hear. But, sad to say, he moved and somehow lost
the recording! He felt terrible about that because it was positive proof that
Welles hated the script and never realized that The War of The Worlds
broadcast would change his entire life and catapult him to instant national
fame, thus clearing the way for him continue in radio with greater personal
control and finally allowing him to enter film making with Citizen Kane.

That Nostalgia night recording has been archived at PPB.
