1933 WLW in Cincinnati, OH premiered Ma Perkins. Just four months
later, Ma moved to WMAQ in Chicago and was heard over the entire NBC
network. Virginia Payne was 23 years old when she started in the title
role. Ma Perkins operated a lumberyard in Rushville Center. Her children
were Evey, Fay and John (who was killed in the war). One of the other
characters in the show was Shuffle Shober. Virginia Payne played Ma
Perkins for 27 years and 7,065 episodes.
1942 Garry Moore hosted a new program on NBC. The Show Without a Name
was an effort to crack the morning show dominance of Arthur Godfrey
(CBS) and Don McNeil's Breakfast Club (ABC). A prize of $500 ($7,346 in
2015 dollars) was offered to name the show and Someone came up with the
title, Everything Goes.
1945 CBS began the series, Columbia Presents Corwin. Orson Welles did
a special reading about the fall of Japan, titled, Fourteen August.
8/15
1911 Procter & Gamble Company of Cincinnati, OH introduced Crisco
hydrogenated shortening. (Where would all those shows have been with
Crisco as a sponsor? And remember, its digestible! ed)
8/16
1922 WEAF began broadcasting from new studios atop the Western
Electric Building in New York City.
1939 Lights Out, radio's "ultimate horror show," was heard for the
last time on NBC. In 1942, Arch Obler brought the show back to life on
CBS. The show's most familiar trademark, guaranteed to put you under the
covers on a dark night was, "Lights out, everybody!", followed by 12
chimes of a clock. (On campus there is a clock that strikes the hours
and I will catch myself saying "It-is-later-than-you-think.
Lights-out-every-body" quite often at noon. -ed)
8/19
In 1929, Amos and Andy, starring Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll,
made its network debut on NBC.

This Week's Classics & Curios Show:
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 220
AN EDDIE HUBBARD SPECIAL: SONGS OF ROMANCE ON THE WATERWAYS
On this Eddie Hubbard Special of March 3, 1990, the focus is on
waterways and romance, highlighted by "Galway Bay" by Bing Crosby.
There are many more great H2O tunes like "Ebb Tide" by Frank Chacksfield
and Roy Hamilton, "Paddlin' Madelin Home" by Johnny Mercer and Bobby
Darin, "When My Dreamboat Comes Home" by the King Sisters, "Beyond the
Sea" by Bobby Darin, "Red Sails in the Sunset" by the Platters, "Harbor
Lights" by Ray Anthony and Ronnie Deauville, "I Threw a Kiss in the
Ocean" by Peggy Lee, and "A Sailboat in the Moonlight" by Guy and Carmen
Lombardo, a song composed by Carmen, along with other songs like "Boo
Hoo," "Seems Like Old Times," and "Powder Your Face with Sunshine."
Eddie also plays some first-class instrumentals like "(I'd Like to Get
You) On a Slow Boat to China" by Eddie Howard, "Up a Lazy River" by Al
Hirt. and "Down By the Riverside" by Ronnie Kole. A waterway special is
"Old Man River" by William Warfield.
Eddie fills up the hour with recordings by the Crewcuts, Judy Collins,
and Kai Winding who performs a fitting "More," which expresses our wish
for more romantic songs relating to waterways. And, of course, there are
many such songs to choose from, such as "Sleepy Lagoon," " Across the
Sea," "Love Letters in the Sand," "Down by the Seashore," "How Deep is
the Ocean," "Isle of Capri," "On Treasure Island," "Red River Valley,"
"`Cross the Wide Missouri," "Stranger on the Shore," and "Surfin' USA."
And, of course, there are countless romantic rain songs (like "Singing
in the Rain" and "Listen to the Rhythm of the Falling Rain") but these
should be in a special category of their own, and Eddie plays some of
them on a later show. Can't say the same for songs like "Splish Splash."
"There's nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop
kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it's sent away." --
Sarah Kay
Special appreciation goes to Jerry Haendiges Productions for restoring
the original Eddie Hubbard studio tape for rebroadcast.

Subject: Old Time Radio Related Books
Hello, I recently stumbled upon two OTR related books online, "Radio Girls"
and "Listener In The Dark". They are both mysteries with the first book set
during the early days of BBC radio and the second book about an OTR fan and
lost ILAM transciption disks. Has anyone on the list read either of these
books and if so would you recommend?
