Where is the KIRO-CBS Collection? It was held by the University of
Washington but I read it was transferred to, I think, the National Archives.
I'd like to find a copy or The World Today from 7-6-1944, listed in the
Collection at 3099a. The lead story seems to be the fire at the Ringling
Brothers-Barnum & Bailey Circus at Hartford CT.
Last item - is anyone aware of other newscasts, network or local, from that
date? I have the WTIC news from that evening, the only local coverage known
to exist. There is a short clip on a 5-cassette set I bought a few years ago.
It sounds like it's from a network newscast but the announcer's voice isn't
familiar to me.
Happy holidays or, to be politically correct - [removed]

The label identifies it as "Mystery Castle - Ep 9", but I
think that's the name of the episode, not the series.
A quick search on [removed] turned up the listings for WKBN
(Youngstown's CBS station) in the Massillon Evening Independent. The series
was indeed titled "Mystery Castle" and it aired weekdays at 5:15 pm during
December 1947, opposite the more mainstream children's fare over ABC and the
Mutual.
Sadly, I could find no other details, such as a publicity article or review.
Hopefully a Digester or two will have more personal information.

Subject: radio morals in the late 30s
This week, I happened across a January 1938 New Yorker that published a
commentary on the Mae West Adam & Eve skit on the Chase & Sanborn Hour that
resulted in her being banned from radio for years.
Regarding 'radio morals,' the New Yorker wrote: ". . . we inquired at a
couple of the big stations to see just what the radio folk considered
inadvisable for broadcasting. There are, we discovered, certain fundamental
taboos. You mayn't say "Damn," "Hell," or "My God" except in serious dramatic
scripts. All racial epithets like "wop" and "Jap" are out. Flouting of
parental authority is forbidden in children's programs, though in evening
broadcasts it's presumably all right to represent adults as flouting their
parents. The rules of the two big chains are not uniform. MNC told us that
they would now permit the use of the word "nuts" but CBS won't permit it, and
furthermore they refuse to broadcast dance arrangements of "Ave Maria", and
so it goes. . ."
Another world, almost another planet, it seems. And not so bad, considering
the level of discourse today in print and broadcast and on the web.
