Sometimes I come across radio episodes with different dates that are exact
duplicates and the second one is labeled repeat. I don't mean repeated
scripts, I mean the exact same recording. I suspect that usually one of the
episodes is just mislabeled. Did national shows broadcast repeat shows
without announcing that it was a repeat? If so, when did this practice begin?

I have some audio clips of Will Rogers that are 5 - 10 minutes long, that I
think are from 1935. In one, he starts off by saying "Everyone Has a Plan."
In the other, he talks about Pilgrims and Indians. I have a third clip when
he starts off talking about the Rogers Plan. This is a different clip from
the other Plan clip. I have seen a date for for the Rogers Plan clip of
35-05-05. Does anyone know the correct dates for these clips and what shows
they are from?

A new feature has been added to [removed]
Mikeline, with Floyd Richards and Bob Ellsworth - November 22, 1963.
Mikeline was a two-hour daily call-in program, hosted by whatever announcers
were on duty at the time. Unlike today's controversial telephone talk shows,
Mikeline featured such issues as recipes and how to remove stains. But on
this day, a news bulletin interrupted the program and changed the world.
President John F. Kennedy had been assasinated in Dallas.
The edited program excerpt is followed by NBC News, and an Americana program
with Dick Bertel, featuring music and more information on the assasination
from the newsroom and NBC. Much of this material is from live NBC Radio
coverage which in all likelihood has been lost, along with NBC Radio.

One man who should definitely be in the OTR Hobbyist's Hall of Fame is
Ted Davenport. He was honest, generous to a fault and was always
finding new material and his material was always of high quality. There
are more accolades I am sure others can think of for Ted. It is a shame
he is no longer in business. His friends and customers miss him.

Subject: ILAM HERMIT
JIM HARMON: I know something about the I Love a Mystery: Hermit of San
Filipe Adabopo. I was the first person to introduce it into radio collectors
circles. When I first moved to the Los Angeles area from Mount Carmel, IL. I
was active in the local science fiction club, the [removed] Science Fantasy
Society. There I met another young man named Jerry Stier. We talked of our
interest in both SF and old radio drama. At that time, there was virtually
NO RECORDINGS of any old radio shows available commercially or privately. It
was 1960. The only thing I can think of was an LP of Welles' War of the
Worlds, and some abbreviated Lone Rager dramas on children's records. Jerry
told me he had a few programs he had saved on tape. He must have been one
of the first private citizens to have a tape recorder in the country. He
even had some recordings of my favorite program, I Love a Mystery. I went
over to his house and he let me listen to some of the episodes, but not all
of them. Even though I did not yet have a recorder, I asked for copies. He
said "no'. They were his personal property. Later we went up to visit
Carlton E. Morse together, and Carlton made a point of loaning some ILAM
transciption discs specifically to me and have me sign for their return, and
return them I did.
After this trip, I asked again for Jerry's tapes, and was again refused. We
got into a personal disagreement. I don't want to say something I should
not say about this disagreement, but I had to explain I was legally obligated
to return Carlton's discs.
I was not on Jerry's list of favorite people after this. After a few years,
I recruited well-known fan, Skp Craig, to contact Jerry again about those
tapes. Skip is very friendly and personable and he persauded Jerry to let him
borrow his tapes. A number of good-sounding ILAM episodes were in
circulation by this time, but Jerry had most of the sequel to the highly
sought "Stairway to the Sun" and I thought as imperfect as the Stier tapes
were, they were worth having.
The Stier tapes were at 1 7/8 and I copied them to [removed] speed. Over the
years, I and others including Dave Amaral and the late Dick Gulla have tried
to equalize and filter the originals and believe it or not, we have made some
improvements.
So many technical improvements are constantly being made, the time may come
when the Hermit can be restored even more, but even as they are, I still like
to hear them about once a year, faults and all. -- JH

Subject: The Coffin in Studio B
I just listened to The Coffin in Studio B, from the 1946 revival of
Lights Out using scripts by Arch Oboler. I would swear one of the leads
is Ernest Chappell, but he's not mentioned in the cast listing at the
end. Instead, I think "Bob Murphy" is named for that character. Could
this have been a pseudonym, for some reason? Can anybody verify whether
or not that actually is Chappell in the part? If it's not him it must
be his brother!

Subject: A Shadow Question
I have a Shadow question: Does anyone remember the episode where the
Shadow comes into the prison cell to interrogate a prisoner and
drives him to insanity and suicide in the process? I cannot even
remember which
actor played the Shadow in this episode. If anyone can remember this
or a similar episode,
I'd be most grateful for the information.
Thanks.
