Subject: Godfrey's "Concrete Stars"

Thanks to reader Ken Clark for the addresses of Mr. Godfrey's "Concrete
Stars" in Hollywood. No, that does not refer to Ed Sullivan. Hah.

I don't believe he was ever on the Godfrey shows, although Mr. Godfrey did
appear on several of the Sullivan offerings - at least once as Santa Claus
for a Christmas show. If anyone has copies of any of these, I will be most
grateful to obtain copies.

I did not know the addresses of the Godfrey Stars in the "Walk of Fame" but
knew they existed. One each for Recording, Radio and TV. For some
unfathomable reason the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce - which sponsors the
Walk of Fame - is not very helpful, although they did confirm the existence.

Thanks much to Mr. Clark for the additional information. I am still hoping
someone in the LA area will helpl my researches by going to those 3 addresses
-
6233 and 6616 Hollywood Blvd. and 1549 Vine Street

and take some nice photographs of them so that I may include them in my book
and archives.

Many thanks again you alert OTR-D readers!

Subject: Commercials, Etc.

Kenneth Clarke suggests,

It occurs to me, however, that there are a couple of things which haven't
been given due consideration. If anyone out there is looking for some as
yet undiscovered subjects for upcoming OTR projects, then here are my
suggestions: OTR game shows and (you're not going to believe this)
commercials and PSA's.

Why shouldn't we believe that? Some of the commercials were quite
original; some, amusing. Some of them became the subjects of jokes. One
I recall well was when one of the comics mentioned a relative to his
partner. When the partner asked him what the relative did, the comic
said, "He's the guy who pinches the girl who says,'Oooooh! That Oxydol
sparkle.'" (For newcomers: Oxydol was a dish detergent.)

Some of the commercials still sound rather "modern," such as the "You've
got go power with Cheerios" commercials one can here on some Lone Ranger
recordings.

One recurring commercial I recall was the beginning of Smilin' Ed
McConnell's Buster Brown gang: "I've got shoes, you've got shoes ... why
everyone ought to have [removed]" played and sung to "All of God's Chillun
Got Shoes."

Some commercials were integrated into the programs, like the one-cent
sale at Rexall drug stores on the Phil Harris - Alice Faye Show (Remley
and Phil sold everything in the store for a penny each).

And, of course, was the famous jingle about Pepsi-Cola hitting the spot.

One could do well having a recording of nothing but commercials.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I wasn't planning on adding to the myriad stories of how people discovered
oldtime radio,
especially since all our stories are somewhat similar, but just in case
anyone can identify
  with my story, here goes:

I was introduced to otr by accident one night at the dinner table, when my
dad put on WEEI radio (prior to the station taking over WHDH 850's
frequency). The original WEEI was at 560 or 580. Anyway, they were airing
rebroadcasts of The Shadow and I was only about seven or eight at the time in
the 1960's and I was not immediately hooked but I was intrigued, but nothing
could tear me away from TV.

Years later (1975) WRVR-FM [removed] in New York, owned by the Riverside Church
and looking for some way/any way to make some money, aired lots of stuff in
addition to jazz, including oldtime radio every night from 7-8 (rebroadcasts)
and I taped and listened to those. Then from Stereo Review's and Audio
Magazine's classified I discovered oldtime radio dealers like Rex Bills'
Golden Age Radio; Gary Dudash and AM Treasures, as well as BRC Quality Dubs
and Airwaves. It was from my dealings with Bob Burnham's BRC that I
communicated with and eventually met Jerry Chapman of Airwaves and Joe Webb
(who is an occasional contributor to this online magazine). There were
occasional other influences along the way, such as National Radio Trader,
Nostalgia Radio News as well as News & Review and Airwaves the publication,
which eventually led me to start offering oldtime radio programs and related
items in 1992 as Vintage Broadcasts, which still exists today.

occasional cassette tape collections of commercials sold; I have one such
tape that has (among many other things) these items, which stick in my memory

     * HFC (Household Finance Corporation) -- "Never borrow needlessly

     * Halo shampoo -- "Halo, everybody, Halo!"

     * Northwest Airlines -- "Northwest Orieeeeent! Airliiiines!" (They've

Subject: Lone Ranger episode titles questions

In talking about his introduction to OTR, Rob Chatlin
cited a _Lone Ranger_ album, "featuring "The Army
Mule" and another story involving the adopted son of a
banker and gamblers."

I also have that record, and would like to know the
actual titles of those episodes.

For that matter, were they actually broadcast or were
these adventures ("by special recording") made
directly for records (sort of like a radio version of
the direct-to-DVD market)?

On a related note, I'm also trying to find out the
exact title of two other _Lone Ranger_ adventures
that were also released on a "by special recording"
record. I'm blanking out about the plot of one, but in
the other, Dan Reid is accused of murder. While he's
stopped at a farmhouse to get some water (and possibly
oats) for Victor, someone puts incriminating evidence
(some stolen money, I believe) in his saddle bags.

Again, I'm writing from memory and may be describing a
scene from the other adventure, in which Dan is
accused of a crime other than murder, but Dan's in
trouble in both.

Can anyone tell me the actual names of those
adventures?

Rick

Subject: My introduction to radio

Dear Folks;
Peace.
My introduction to what would become OTR was when our father bought the
family's first radio in the summer of 1950. It was a big console, record
player/radio combination. It was here that I caught the tail end of the
golden age of radio. I listened to a variety of programs, but the only
afternoon radio was the Mutual line-up that included my all-time favorite,
Straight Arrow. The radio only lasted a couple of years ~ one evening smoke
wisped from the back and suddenly no radio. I was listening to a story about
a group traveling into a extinct volcano where at the bottom was a land lost
in time. I do not remember the name of the show, but it was a continuing
series. In my teen years a plastic Philco portable radio brought WLAC out of
Nashville and rhythm n' blues into my ear at night, when most of the local
stations went off the air at sundown (check out
[removed]~jimlowe/[removed]) for more information on
that great radio station.
The Nabisco jingle, the dash to the secret cave, the transformation of Steve
Adams into Straight Arrow and the ride out of the cave on the trail to
justice stayed with me through all the years leading directly to research on
the entire Nabisco promotion and then to the recently published book from
BearManor; Straight Arrow: The Definitive Radio Log and Resource Guide for
that Legendary Indian Figure On the Trail of Justice.
I have a large collection of radio shows and both my younger children (boy,
16 & girl, 18) enjoy.
