Subject: Re: John Dunning
I wonder if anyone has heard about John Dunning lately? I have bunch of tapes
of interviews he did with lots of radio actors, all deceased now I suspect.
These
are some of the best interviews I've ever heard on any subjects. He asked all
the
questions I would have asked and was curious about.
I picked up one of his novels last week, The Bookman's Wake and that got me
to thinking about him. I was in contact with him some years ago and he told
me that a brain tumor had severely affected his ability to write
and I haven't heard anything since. Besides his OTR books, his novels struck
chords with
me on totally other themes. I am a book collector, Private Investigator,
former ski bum
in Colorado and worked through college at a horse racing track and his novels
touched
on all those themes. I remember one book that had a scene about going over a
Colorado
pass in a snow storm and I remember many hairy incidents like that going from
ski races in
Aspen and Vail to home in Steamboat. I don't ever remember him touching on
Old Radio shows
in his books. Anyway, hope he is OK

1935 A talented twelve year old sang on Wallace Beery's NBC show. Judy
Garland delighted the appreciative audience. The young girl would soon
be in pictures and at the top of stardom. It would be only four years
before Ms. Garland (George Jessel gave her the name, thinking it would
be better than her own, Frances Gumm) captured the hearts of moviegoers
everywhere with her performance as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.

Marconi, Fessenden, and De Forest were the catalysts. However, it was an
engineer for Westinghouse Electric who, in 1916, was broadcasting music
from his garage (in Wilkinsburg, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh) over a
wireless (amateur radio station 8XK) who really got the whole thing
started. A newspaper article about the broadcasts caused such interest
that the head honchos at Westinghouse decided to build a real radio station.
It took until this day in 1920 for the Westinghouse radio station to
receive a license to broadcast. The license for KDKA, Pittsburgh came
from the [removed] Department of Commerce. Although the license was
officially issued on this day, KDKA did not start their broadcast
operations for a week (they had to wait until the license was posted in
the station). On November 2, 1920, the station aired the returns of the
Harding/Cox election ... the first radio programming to reach an
audience of any size ... approximately 1,000 people.
1947 This is Nora Drake premiered on NBC. Nora solved domestic, social
and child raising problems until January 2, 1959.
1947 "The one, the only Groucho" Marx appeared as quizmaster on You
Bet Your Life for the first time on ABC. George Fenneman was Groucho's
eternal straight man. Fenneman stayed with Marx during the program's run
on radio (1948-1959) and TV (1950-1961). By the way,
who is buried in Grant's tomb?

1922 WEAF in New York broadcast the first collegiate football game
heard coast to coast. Princeton played the University of Chicago at
Stagg Field in the Windy City. The broadcast was carried on phone lines
to New York City, where the radio transmission began. (Princeton 21,
Chicago 18.)
1946 Our favorite flying cowboy was heard on ABC for the first time.
Sky King starred Jack Lester, then Earl Nightingale, and finally, Roy
Engel, as Sky. Beryl Vaughn played Sky's niece Penny; Jack Bivens was
Chipper and Cliff Soubier was the foreman. Sky King was sponsored by
Mars candy.

This Week's Classics & Curios Show:
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 142
THE PHILCO SUMMER HOUR WITH PAUL WHITEMAN
This show was from the "Philco Summer Hour," which was the summer
replacement for the "Radio Hall Of Fame." This particular show is the
final show of the summer series from 9-24-44.
The host is Paul Whiteman who reprises some of the most requested songs
from past shows. Among performers of the songs are The Memphis Five, Red
Norvo, Four Chicks and a Chuck, Bob Johnson, Ilene Woods, and the Hall
of Fame Chorus.
Songs include Whiteman's top rated 1926 recording of "Valencia," "I
Dream of You," "Straighten Up and Fly Right," "Time Waits for No One,"
"The Trolley Song," "The Man I Love," and Whiteman's recording of
"Whispering" done, first, in the jazz style of his old group The Tuxedo
Nine and then in the lush style of his full orchestra. The song is
performed here as part of Whiteman's popular "Now and Then" segment.
And, incidentally, Whiteman's "Whispering" recording of 1920 was
inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.
Whiteman had 28 number one recordings during the 1920's and 1930's
during his career. At the height of his popularity, eight out of the top
ten sheet music sales slots were by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra.
Although Eddie Condon and some critics thought that Whiteman sought to
"make a lady" out of jazz, Duke Ellington graciously declared, "Paul
Whiteman was known as the King of Jazz, and no one as yet has come near
carrying that title with more certainty and dignity."
At one point, there is a pause for a sobering news report by George
Hayes who summarizes activities on the war fronts in Europe and in the
Pacific in 1944. Appropriately, the final song on the show is "I Had a
Little Talk with the Lord" sung movingly by Bob Johnson. Here are some
of the poignant lyrics of that 1944 song (music by Vic Mizzy, words by
Mann Curtis):
Dusk was falling on the Pacific,
All was strangely still,
In the silence before the battle,
In a foxhole in Bougainville.
Faces were tense and waiting
Till a boy brought new hope their way
And fearlessly told his buddies
As they knelt to God to pray ...
I Had a Little Talk With The Lord ...
To give me strength to stand up again;
Right there my heart began to smile
and I Had a Little Talk With The Lord ...
And I knew the Lord had blessed [removed]
The final four lines of the song are good advice especially in today's
battle weary terrorist world and remind us, as Tennyson wrote, "More
things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of":
So have a little talk with the Lord, Have faith and you will share his
reward, For I found the strength to fight for my land When I Had a
Little Talk With The Lord.
