wasn't Howard McNear
the same guy that played Floyd on the old 'Andy Griffith Show'
series? I had no idea of his rich radio past.
Yep, one and the same. I always knew he had quite a radio career but had no
idea his roles varied so widely and wildly. What I've heard has been very
impressive, especially his surprisingly large body of work with the "Lux
Radio
Theatre." He's also a surprisingly convincing bad guy. And all of this and
"Cinnamon Bear" too came before his role on "Gunsmoke."

Subject: Two Christmas shows
I think that two of the most unusual OTR Christmas shows are Casey, Crime
Photographer -- "The Santa Claus of Bums Boulevard" 12/15/47, and Grand
Central Station -- "Miracle for Christmas" 8/15/51. While listening to Casey
last night, it occurred to me that both shows have the same twist at the end.
I won't give away the "surprise" but will say that both shows are worth
listening to.

Slim Pickens appeared in films as early as the mid '40s according to
British researchers Leslie Halliwell and David Quinlan. But he would
have just 18 years old at the time of "Cinnamon Bear" in 1937. In any
case, if Larry Gassman's ears tell him it's Howard McNear, that's
good enough for me.
