For thise who like to figure out the daily syndicated newspaper puzzle
"Cryptoquotes," skip down to the next paparagraph. I've already figured
out today's (28) quote, which is remotely OTR-connected.
"If it weren't for Philo T. Farnsworth, inventor of television, we'd still be
eating frozen radio dinners."--Johnny Carson.

The obit I read for TV-writer Danny Simon, older brother of Broadway
playwright Neil Simon, said that both the Simon brothers got their
starts writing for radio before shifting over to Sid Caesar and "Your
Show of Shows." Said obit did not specify which radio shows.

"A man walks into a talent [removed]" The less said about the new
documentary "The Aristocrats," about the dirtiest joke in the world
which has the punch-line "the aristocrats," the better. Further analysis
and discussion of this joke probably
is way off-topic. I saw the film last night & would like to mention that
three scheduled guests at this autumn's FOTR convention are
featured in this film: Joe Franklin (who doesn't tell the joke), Larry
Storch, and Chuck McCann (who tells a somewhat cleaned-up version
of the joke).

Yours always in the ether,

Derek Tague

I'm new to the list, so hello to all. I hosted an OTR program in
Milwaukee called "The Sounds of Yesterday" from 1974 to 1989. It
was also heard on Wisconsin Public Radio for one year (until I
tried to air Amos n [removed] they didn't like that).

Jed Dolnick

I would like to add, it is great seeing the name Jed Dolnick on the
digest. The Milwaukee Area Radio Enthusiasts is nearing its 30th
year. During the formation of the club it was Jed and his program
that was the inspiration and the catalyst that got us going. True, it
was more than a one person job, but in part because of Jed we have
the Milwaukee Area Radio Enthusiasts today.

Welcome Jed, sometime you should tell the "Amos 'n' Andy" story.

Ralph Edwards revived "This is Your Life" as a series of TV specials about ten
or fifteen years ago. One of his attempted subjects or victims was Angie
Dickinson. She walked out.
"This will make me cry, and I look awful when I cry." They were taping in
advance so another victim was found for a later date. Not inside
information. It was in all the tabloids. Somewhere among about 2,000 video
tapes I have one of those later day productions -- can't remember the subject
-- which also showed filmed highlights from the old series.

I'm really enjoying this thread.
I remember seeing the show when it was on live TV and all this talk
makes me wonder if there are shows that survived and are available for
viewing!
If so please let me know.
I recall only two but they were beauties.
The first was when some wag at the network suggested they get Bette
Davis.
She was 'surprised', as I recall, in a dressing room off stage with the
understanding that she was to meet with some producer regarding a film
project.
When Ralph walked into the room with that tell-tale book under his arm
she knew instantly what was up, scowled wickedly and got up and left the
room!
Ralph's laugh was genuine but he did look rather nervous.
I don' remember if they broke for commercial or whether someone coaxed
her back but she did return and the show went on to be a real lulu as she
would have said.
The other was with the great and very shy Boris Karloff who had been
cajoled to come to the studio and watch what at that time must have been a
very
intriguing event called a 'live' TV broadcast.
He was given a seat near a monitor but still in the gallery with the
audience which must have given some of them quite a turn if they recognized
him.
Ralph began his syrupy opening and the camera found its way to Boris who
was watching the monitor.
"Yes, this is your [removed] Karloff."
In what must be the very first case of disorientation at seeing oneself
on TV and every move you make is the reverse on the screen, we see Boris not
quite grasping that Ralph is talking about him.
The look on his face when he finally gets it is worth the price of
admission as they say.
Like a schoolboy caught doing something he shouldn't, the reluctant
master of horror surrenders to Ralph and the show went on to feature many
people
from his past, not the least of which was Jack Pierce, the man he saw at 4
o'clock every morning for many weeks back in 1930, the man who created the
Frankenstein monster make-up.
I recall the Laurel & Hardy one as well.
Great shows. All dear to my heart.
Someone please tell me at least some of them have survived.
    It would warm my heart.

I have been told that Helen "Boop Boop A Doop" Kane was on "This Is Your
Life."

Sadly, she had to sell the kinescope when she had some cash problems.

Does anybody on the List know of this episode? And where to get it?

OTR: I'm reading mid-30s copies of WLS's "Standby" weekly and have come
across an amazing situation. For a time in 1936-37 the City of Chicago went
to what was called "New York City Time" (EST)! The rest of IL stayed with
CST.

WLS, citing its obligation to its statewide and regional audience, stayed on
CST even though it was transmitting from Chicago. And they weren't happy
about it!

The invaluable BBC7 recently rebroadcast one of those Simon Brett serials.
I believe it was "[removed] Disappearance." I'm sure it'll come round again
before long, though I wouldn't rush to hear it: swell production but not a
very intriguing plot, in my opinion, and shot through with the sort of glum
amorality that contemporary British mysteries seem to feel honor bound to
traffick in.

Anybody else here ever seen the parody of "This is Your Life" that Sid
Caesar did on "Your Show of Shows" where Sid is the honoree and he pretends
to be asleep, then tries to run away and is restrained? . IMHO, it's one
of the funniest TV comedy sketches ever.

The Charles Paris books and radio plays are written by Simon Brett. A list
of his mystery books can be found at:

[removed]

A page devoted to his radio work can be found at:

[removed]

I could not find it on the above page, but Simon Brett also worked on the
BBC radio series "Foul Play" which had two mystery writers trying to guess
who was the killer from a play-lette (if that is the word I want).

I am sure that others can tell you more about Simon Brett, but as you will
find from the above he is both a prolific and very good writer. I don't
know the details but I think that he also used to work for the BBC.

Subject: The Computer Calculates ...

Hello anyone who's interested in Shadow history,

The full name of the show discussed in tyhe 7/28/05 issue of the OLDTIME
RADIO DIGEST was "The Computer Calculates, But The Shadow Knows." It
was produced sometime in the mid-1960's. The show on the other side of the
phonograph record was entitled "The Air Fraight Fracas."

As I remember it, in "The Computer Calculates, ..." Brett Morrison was
Lamont Cranston (The Shadow);; Grace Matthews was Margot Lane; Lawson Zerbe
was Charley, the computer whiz and gang leader; Mandel Cramer was his
sidekick; Ken Roberts was the bank teller and informed them that he was "a
Princeton Man"; and Santos Ortega was Commissioner Weston. If there was
anyone else in the cast, I can't remember who it was.

If I can help in any other way, I'll be glad to.

If it hasn't shut its doors already, APPLAUSE BOOKS on West 71st Street, west
of Broadway,
has announced its closing. Although Applause specialised in theatrical books,
they were also
top-neavy w/ out-of-print Hollywood personality biographies, many of the
performers had put in some
time in OTR. They did have a small "Radio" section. I recently picked up the
two "Vic 'n' Sade"
books there.

On a sadder note, I just happened to pass by FOOTLIGHT RECORDS on East Twelfth
Street
(between 3rd & 4th Avenues) yesterday (27). This store specialised in Broadway
original-cast a
nd movie soundtrrack albums, but also was rich in 1950s & 1960s vocalists.
After about 35 years,
Footlight is shutting down its store in favour of concentrating its sales on
the Internet
([removed]). All vinyl is 75% off; most CDs are 30$ off; there's lots
of $[removed] vinyl
bins to sift through. Ivan "Mr. Radiola" Shreeve, take note: I did see some
Radiola/Mark 56
LP releases [removed]

When I started collecting the spoken-word oeuvre of Senator Everett McKinley
Dirksen in
my early 20s, Footlight was the first place I went.

It's such a shame to see these great storefronts packin' it in. I'm so
distraught, I actually
ended two sentences in this missive with prepositions. Next thing you know,
I'll
be leaving the "U" out of "favorite."

Eyjer!

It's I again.

I very much would like to attend the memorial service for Nana Clute to be
held
on Sunday 08/21 in her hometown of Watkins Glen NY (near Corning & Elmira).
If there's anybody driving up there from the NYC or northen NJ area, I'd like
to
tag along for the ride & help out with gas money. Keyboard virtuoso Ed Clute
and
his recently deceased loving wife Nana were good friends of mine from various
OTR conventions.

Takers? Please contact me off-list at derek@[removed]. Thanks.
