SAME TIME, SAME STATION

We continue this week with a program dedicated to Both Frank Bresee and
Jackson Beck. We'll hear Mr. Beck in
WORDS AT WAR
from 03/28/44 Episode (42) A Bell For Adano.

Frank Bresee will be 83 on 08/20/2012. His work in radio is very
important to those of us who grew up in later years and wanted to get a
sense of those who took part in this glorious age. He has done so much
to preserve the shows and the memories of the many who worked in this
wonderful medium. Thanks to David Schwartz who suggested we do this
tribute to our friend.

First we hear "THE GOLDEN DAYS OF RADIO" from October 1975. Frank Bresee
Norman Corwin, Ray Bradbury, and from KFAC Radio Los Angeles, Steve
Marcum. This interview was over 2 hours in length before Frank cut it
down to air within the structure of his Golden Days of Radio program. He
centers primarily on Norman Corwin as his guest.

Next from the mid 60's we hear a brief excerpt with Frank Bresee and
brilliant comedy writer Snag Werris. In this brief excerpt Snag Werris
tells Frank the story of his name.

Frank Bresee worked with Ralph Edwards for many years. We'll hear two
shows with Ralph Edwards and Charlie McCarthy as they salute Charlie on
the radio version of
THIS IS YOUR LIFE
from March 1 and March 8 1950.

CLASSICS & CURIOS

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 41

EDDIE HUBBARD: "EDDIE PLAYS WEDDING SONGS"

In celebration of the 54th wedding anniversary for Jerry and Elaine and
the 50th for Duane and Glenda this month we feature Eddie Hubbard and
some timeless wedding songs. As you can see in the photos to the left,
amazingly the gals still look like young chicks, and the guys clearly
have become vintage golden age geezers, but, praise the Lord, the gals
still love us. This was Eddie's first show after his own marriage to his
dear Lil. So in celebration, of over a century of blessed marriages
we'll hear Eddie play wonderful wedding songs like "Wedding Bells Are
Breaking Up That Old Gang of Mine," "Always," "Forever Together,"
"Someone to Watch Over Me," "Love and Marriage," "I'll Dance at Your
Wedding," "My Funny Valentine," "I'll Be Loving You Eternally," "There
Is Love," and "When Your Old Wedding Ring Was New." Among performers
we'll hear the Four Aces, Dick Haymes, Buddy Clark and Anita Gordon,
Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mercer and the Pied Pipers, Lena
Horne, Steve and Eydie, and Jimmy Roselli. A special note about Irving
Berlin's song "Always:" Berlin wrote the song in 1925 as a wedding gift
for his 1926 bride Ellin. Also, "Always" was the theme music for the
1942 movie "The Pride of the Yankees," and has been recorded by a
multitude of artists including Sammy Kaye who did it twice, first in
1945, and again in 1949. Of course, with its touching lyrics it has been
sung during countless weddings for generations. Eddie probably ran out
of time to play perhaps the most famous wedding song to close the show:
Al Jolson's 1947 hit "The Anniversary Song." This classic song sang of
stars in the skies and stars in our brides' eyes. And, as the lyrics
proclaimed, when we reach our golden years "could we recall that [first]
sweet moment sublime, we'd find that our love is unaltered by time." So
I'm sure Eddie and Lil would join Jerry, Elaine, Glenda, and me to
invite you to celebrate musically the glorious blessings of marriage
dedicated to the Lord: A wonderful lifelong mutual journey of ever
deepening love, commitment, faith and faithfulness, unselfish sacrifice,
kindness, respect, self-control, patience, gentleness, sense of humor,
and eternal joy.

Again, thanks go to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting Eddie's
original studio tape for highest quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time

Episode 5

In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"

Subject: WOR Feature Record

yesterday I found a 10" 78 Record with a label "WOR Feature" (with a 44
microphone on each side of WOR) it's a recording of:

"People will say We're in Love"
>From the Musical Comedy
"Oklahoma"
Oscar Hammerstein II - Richard Rodgers
Jan Garber and his Orchestra
Vocal by Gwen Davies
1002-B
M-4
(matrix number "WOR 4-1)
around the outside edge of the label is ways "Radio" 19 times, and WOR
Recording Studio - New York, [removed]

I don't think I've heard whether WOR did recording for commercial releases,
is this the case? if so did they do this a lot? or could this be a recording
from of the air? and is this the same Gwen Davies that was on Let's Pretend?

on the other side:

Long Ago
(and far away)
>From the Columbia Musical Picture
"Cover Girl"
Ira Gershwin - Jerome Kern
Jan Garber and his Orchestra
Vocal by Bob Davis
1002-A
M-1
(matrix number "WOR 1)

Any information on this recording would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Subject: Old Time Radio app

I just received a Kindle Fire for my birthday (my 80th) & was going through
the apps that are available for it & saw "Old Time Radio Player". It's a
free app so I downloaded it and installed it. It's great. Hundreds of free
radio shows. As the Kindle takes Android apps it may be available for other
units that take Android apps. Happy listening!
