Ray was a gentleman and a gentle man. His wit and energy was always at full
tilt whenever he came to a REPS function. His dedication to his craft was
evident as I watched him work his magic at Showcase recreations. We at
Imagination Theatre had the good fortune to have Ray's skills shine on
several of our broadcasts and we shall cherish that fact with pride and
thankfulness forever. Those of us who got to share time with him should feel
blessed for the memories he gave us and his time on this Earth. He was one of
a kind.
May he rest in the full joy of God's love.

When I was growing up in the 40's & 50's, Coke was sold in 8 ounce bottles (
1 cup ) so we bought Pepsi since it was 12 ounce ( 50% more for the same
price). Then along came RC Cola in 16 ounce bottles & we switched again. Now
Coke & Pepsi are the same price but Pepsi tastes watered down so back to Coke
again. However, I like the old Pepsi jingle better than the old Coke ads, but
on the newer side, I like I'd Like To Teach The World etc. best. Dick Olday

Subject: Ray Erlenborn

Over the years in which I attended the FOTR convention(and one Spervac
convention), I met a great many OTR actors and other retired OTR
professionals. Most of them were interesting people. A few were well known in
the OTR era, some much less so. Some tried to capitalize on their previous
careers - [removed] selling autographed photos of themselves in their prime----.
And others just came to the OTR conventions because they liked what they had
done and wanted another taste.

Sound effects men Bob Mott and the late Ray Erlenborn are/were in the latter
group -- Two very different -- but equally fascinating men. I met and talked
to Ray twice and did one phone interview. He had a sort of cherubic
appearance and if my memory serves me write -- perhaps the word applies too
to his personality. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to him and something about
him sort of burrowed into my psyche. I remember Ray telling me that during
WWII, he served in an army unit that was based in the LA area. His adjutant
was a guy named Ronald Reagan. (In later years, Reagan referred to his
military service overseas - a total figment of his imagination - he made
training films stateside)

I was saddened to hear of Ray's passing. He was a skilled soundman- an
original and he was a charming human being.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I think I've enjoyed this string more than any other I've seen on the
Digest! Amazing to read the different paths we've [removed]

Born in 1955 and growing up in a small town in Kansas, I didn't discover OTR
until 1970 when the planets aligned in three distinct ways.

First: My family bought a cassette tape player through an offer sponsored by
the Longines Symphonette. It was accompanied by LP records of "The War of
the Worlds" and "Great Moments in Radio" hosted by Jack
Benny. The Benny/Fred Allen "King for a Day" segment and the INCREDIBLE
long excerpt from "Death Stalks the Shadow" opened an entire new world to
me. Anyone who listened to that record knows how frustrating that Shadow
cliffhanger [removed] took me YEARS to hear the end of the show!

Second: I saw an ad for Radio Yesteryear (in an Antique Trader magazine, I
assume) and ordered two Amos 'n' Andy cassettes as a gift for my dad, who had
mentioned they were his childhood favorites. I'll never forget his laughing
as we listened together to Calhoun attempting to cross-examine Madame Queen
and taking a call from a client in Sing-Sing. Whereas most teenagers were
drifting away from their parents, those tapes created a special bond with my
Dad that continues to this day (he's 82). While dementia has taken away his
independence, any request for his advice today causes his face to light up
as he says, "Whatever you do, [removed]'T SIT DOWN!"

Third: Dad and I read about a nostalgia convention to be held that summer in
Oklahoma City. We went, and were introduced into a wonderful world. We
became collectors of all sorts of "kid stuff" from the depression era,
including comic books, movie posters, toys, sports and of course radio.
Through an endless array of garage sales, farm auctions, antique shops, flea
markets, mail order and conventions, we shared many discoveries that kept us
together. We met many of our heroes in [removed] and Abner, Bret
Morrison, John Archer, Fred Foy, Buster Crabbe, Johnny Weismuller, Roy Rogers,
Clayton Moore, Spanky [removed] living so far from the coasts.
I'll never grow up!

For 37 years, I've loved an art form that was gone before I knew it existed.
I trust that future generations can do the same, if we keep it alive by
continuing to share our experiences as well as our recordings. This digest
serves that effort very well. Thanks to all of you who inspire me daily.

Subject: RE: How I got interested in OTR

Just thought that I would get in on the "How I found OTR" tread, if I'm not
to late

I was born in 1959, so if I heard OTR in the last few days of its life, I
don't recall. I do remember my parents and grandparents talking about
listening to such shows as Murder at Midnight, The Lone Ranger, The Shadow
and The Grand Old Opry.

In the late 60's and early 70's, I discovered Famous Monsters and the
Warren Group of magazines (Creepy, Eerie, and the rest). These books had the
coolest advertisments, in fact a catalog, in the back from "Captain
Company". One of the things that caught my eye as a young teen was the page
of LP's featuring Old Radio Shows. They had "The Shadow"," The Lone Ranger"
and "Superman" all for about $[removed] Interested, I sent for a couple. I got
the "Superman" and "The Shadow",and really enjoyed them. The Superman
featured the origin and the battle with Keno, The Shadow had two Orsen
Welles shows. I still have the Superman but The Shadow disk disappeared over
the years.

Around this time one of our local radio stations began playing OTR every
Saturday night from 11:30pm to 12:30am, I got to hear such shows as Jack
Benny, Fibber McGee and Molly, Amos and Andy, Escape (They played "Three
Skelton Quay" with Vincent Price---it gave me shivers then and now), The
Green Hornet and others. They started this in October, so after I watched
Hockey Night in Canada, I jumped in bed and tuned my radio to this station.
This only lasted for about four months and the station changed format. The
CBC did have radio drama around this time, but I only caught a few shows.

In the late 70's and early 80's, discoverd dealers in OTR. People like Jim
Harmon (I got the complete "I Love Adventure" from him on cassette), Radio
Spirits, Adventures in Cassettes and others. Since I was working steady
then, I had more income to spend on things like this. I started collecting
seriously around 1986 and continued until 1994. I stopped then due to some
major health and employment problems. It was in 2004 that I started to get
back in to collecting OTR again. I have since converted what cassettes I
have to MP3's for storage reasons, and have gotten more shows in that
format.

I currently have about 20,000 shows in mostly MP3 format. I still want
more. I need some Johnny Dollar's, I only have about 12 and like everyone I
would love more I Love a Mystery episodes.

I have recently been doing some MP3 cd's for some friends who are of the
age to have heard these shows on the radio and have begun to introduce
younger people to OTR. Last Christmas I played "The Cinnamon Bear" at the
local day care centre. I played two episodes a day, starting on Dec. 6 and
ending on the 22nd. It went over so well that I have been asked to do it
again this year. I am going to get "Christmas on the Moon" as well.

What have everyone else been doing to interest other people in OTR?

 Keep Listening
