Subject: Christmas Chimes on NBC
With all the discussion of holiday programming from the great days
of network radio, I'd like to posit a query about one brief moment. It
was on Christmas Eve around 1950 that I was listening to something on
the radio and at the end of the broadcast an announcer came on and said
"This is N-B-C, the Night Before Christmas."
That was followed by the famous bong-BONG-bong-g-g-g. I'm positive
about what the announcer said, but also seem to recall that the three
chimes were mixed with the sound of sleigh bells. If that were so, it
could be the only time that NBC's registered audible trademark was
infiltrated by another sound.
Does anyone else remember this? Are there any recordings extant?
Did NBC do this every year?
Perhaps we can have a network ID this Tuesday night that goes: This
is N-B-C, Now Begins Chanukkah.
Happy Holidays (lots of them) to all.

Subject: Conrad as thug
In response to Dan Hughes's comment on William Conrad playing a bad guy on
an early TV western, I recently saw Conrad on Turner Classic Movies in The
Killers. He very convincingly played the part of a hateful thug who comes
with a partner to a small town to rub out a guy. I watched the movie only
because I saw Conrad's name in the credits. His part is brief but enjoyable
for any fan of his.

The Los Angeles Times Saturday reported the death of Jeanne Bates on
Wednesday, November 28 of breast cancer at the age of 89:

Jeanne was on many shows during the golden age of radio but perhaps is best
remembered as Teddy Barbour, adopted daughter of Paul Barbour on ONE MAN'S
FAMILY. She was a much loved Honorary Member of SPERDVAC and will be missed.

Subject: Dec issue: RADIO RECALL
The full-color edition of RADIO RECALL has been emailed to
subscribers via PDF and the hard-copy, B & W, will follow in 10 days
via USPO. Featured article in December issue is "Superman, Kellogg's
and Robert J. Maxwell" written by Man of Steel expert, Michael Hayde.
This detailed piece reveals the exact causes of Kellogg's dropping
its sponsorship of this popular series, leading to its demise.
Another article outlines the Edgar Allen Poe stories featured on
"Suspense", "The Weird Circle", "Inner Sanctum Mysteries" and other
network shows. Two MWOTRC members' books are reviewed in this issue:
Jim Cox's book, "The Great Radio Sitcoms" and David & Susan Siegel's
volume, "Radio and the Jews." There is also an interesting quiz based
on the TV Radio Mirror Awards of 1958-59, regarding which radio
personality won in each category. Sample OTR question:
Who was the favorite female singer for the 1958-59 season?
a) Dinah Shore
b) Alice Lon
c) Doris Day
This issue, as always, contains details of all upcoming OTR
conventions, events, and festivals. Another page is devoted to
letters to the editor, asking and answering OTR questions.
To view articles from previous issues, or obtain subscriber
information, go to <[removed]> and click on RADIO RECALL.

Subject: Bob Smith on WEAF
Our extended discussion of Howdy Doody (the first thing I ever saw on
television) contained this colloquy:
>> A. Joseph Ross points out, correctly, that the greeting "Howdy Doody"
> >began on Bob Smith's radio show, "Triple B Ranch" from WEAF when the
> >character "Elmer" (voiced by Smith) would use that phrase.
>It was WNBC by the time Bob Smith worked there.
Actually, Bob Smith began as the morning man at WEAF about three months
before 6 November 1946 when it became WNBC.
Picky point, sure, but we all want the OTR Digest to be accurate in all
its detail, right?

Subject: Script For Rare Show
I have a small stack of original scripts from the serial drama "Those We
Love", which ran from 1938 to 1945. There is next to no information on this
series that I can find, other than the listing in Hickerson's Guide, and a
singe paragraph in Jim Cox's "Great Radio Soap Operas".
Hickerson's Guide lists a SINGLE episode extant, I sure would love to hear
it! Does anyone happen to have it? There's no listing for it in the
RadioGoldIndex, I have no idea how tough it will be to track [removed]'s
hoping it's out there!
I'm posting the oldest looking script of the bunch, Episode 16, here:
[removed]
I think it's pretty neat because it has the writer's pencilled-in notes,
adding numerous lines of dialog and some corrections and [removed]
gives some real insight to the creation of a show, being able to view the
actual handwritten notes!
This is an original typewritten script with pencil notes added, on old
yellow-brown paper. My scans have been brightened up to make the pencil
remarks easier to read. What puzzles me is a note on the first page, a
handwritten "1943" in dark blue ballpoint pen. To my eyes, this script is
older than 1943, and there are no other ballpoint notes on it. I'm thinking
that this is Episode 16, placing it somewhere in 1938, and the 1943 notation
was written by someone else, much later - what years did ballpoint pens
become common, the fifties? Maybe it's not ballpoint, but it sure looks like
it to me.
And since there's no opening or closing pages with announcer or sponsor
information, it's extra tough to date this script.
Any help at all would be appreciated - I know that this is the place to ask!
Thanks in advance, and enjoy the script!
Stephen Jansen
