This Week's Classics & Curios Show:
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 125
"COCOANUT GROVE AMBASSADORS" WITH JIMMIE GRIER & TED FIO RITO
Once again by way of the magic of the original radio (Transco)
transcription we're at the lush Cocoanut Grove of the Ambassador Hotel
in Los Angeles.
According to Wikipedia, "Everything at the Grove was big, both in size
and design. Formally attired guests were led down a grand staircase into
a garish adult wonderland. Mechanical monkeys with glowing eyes hung
from full size papier mache palm trees that had been used in Rudolph
Valentino's hit movie "The Sheik." The high ceiling was lit with stars
and a real waterfall cascaded down the back wall. It is said the
Barrymore brothers would occasionally let their pet monkeys loose on the
floor, and the creatures would scurry up the rocks and into the trees.
"From the start, the best jazz bands, big bands, swing orchestras and
crooners like Bing Crosby played the Grove; The in-house musical
director Freddy Martin, aka "Mr. Cocoanut Grove," made the room world
famous with his radio show that broadcast live and featured a very young
vocalist by the name of Merv Griffin. From the '20s to the '60s everyone
who was anyone played the Grove. Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank
Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, The Supremes, Nat King Cole, Sonny and Cher.
"The Grove was also the site of several Academy Awards ceremonies
including the banner 1940 show that was swept by "Gone with the Wind."
But, the slow decline of the Ambassador accelerated after the death of
RFK. The Grove tried to revamp its image, bringing Sammy Davis Jr. in as
musical director and re-decorating the club in the style of the
industrial, sleek Vegas clubs that it had originally inspired. The hotel
and the Grove were finally closed in 1989. Until its demolition in 2006
many said you could still hear the echo of music and mirth coming from
the once filled ballroom off Wilshire Boulevard."
Jimmie Grier starts off this "Grove Ambassadors" episode from 1932 with
three more shows among the "swaying palms." Jimmie and his "greater
all-star Cocoanut Grove orchestra bring tunes like "After All Is Said
and Done," "A Secret Love," "Kiss by Kiss," "Say That You Are Teasing
Me," "Bon Voyage to Your Ship of Dreams," "Dinah," "Two Loves Have I,"
and "Tell Me While We're Dancing." We also hear a medley of "Moonlight
on the Ganges," "The Sheik of Araby," and "On the Road to Mandalay."
Vocalists include Kenny Allen, Donald Novis, Gogo de Lys, and the Three
Cheers (reminiscent of the Rhythm Boys).
The Fio Rito band follows Grier at the Grove in 1933 and performs "Lady,
Play Your Mandolin," "Someday I'll Find You," "Too Beautiful for Words,"
and "Be Still My Heart." Because of a Transco recording contract Fio
Rito performed under the name Valsanti, and for the same reason, Muzzy
Marcellino became Jack Howard; Howard Phillips became Bill Thomas; and
the Three Debutantes became the Three Blue Keys.
At various times famous entertainers had connections with the
Valsanti/Fio Rito band such as Betty Grable, Dick Powell, Frances
Langford, David Rose, Russ Morgan, Lucille Ball, Doc Severinson, June
Haver, Ted Lewis, and Candi Candido. Fio Rito also composed successful
songs like "Toot, Toot, Tootsie, Goodbye," made famous by Al Jolson, on
whose radio show Fio Rito's band also appeared.
An interesting side note is that Fio Rito's name was mentioned, along
with bandleaders Isham Jones, Little Jack Little, and others in an
episode of Jackie Gleason's "Honeymooners" called "Young at Heart," as
Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton recalled big bands of their youth. Gleason,
of course, loved the big bands and featured the Dorseys in various shows
at various times beginning in1953.
Gleason, of course, was a big Dorsey fan and years earlier he had likely
been impressed with Fio Rito at the Grove. "Musically, the orchestra
that Fio Rito brought to the Grove was sweet, smooth and clever, playing
highly danceable music ... and even an occasional solo on the Hammond
organ by its talented leader." (Wikipedia)
Fio Rito's theme song "Rio Rita" began and ended his appearances, as it
does in this, the last of this episode's programs from the Cocoanut
Grove. Though his name may not be as famous as Dorsey, Miller, Goodman,
or Shaw, Fio Rito ranks among the finest bandleaders through his
impressive contributions in musicianship and composition, on recordings
and radio, in movies, and even on television. As with Arnheim, Grier,
and other great big bandleaders, there are entertaining You-Tube
performances of Fio Rito online 24/7.
In the next few moments as we enjoy the magical big band musical
pleasures of yesterday, consider this timeless thought: "The past, the
present, and the future are really one: they are today." -- Harriet
Beecher Stowe

This is the first of some short postings I will do from interviews I did some
years ago for my OTR book, WORDS AT WAR.
#1.
Jeff Corey did a Lux Radio Theatre show just before he went into the Navy
during World War II. The day before he was sworn into the Navy, some officers
wanted him to stay for some publicity pictures.
"For God's sake," Corey said, "I've got to leave to do my last show."
The officer gave him a hard time, but just in time he got to the theatre
where the show was done. Someone else had stood in for him during the dress
rehearsal.
After the performance, Cecil B. DeMille who was nominally the show's director
came over to him and took Corey's hand in his two hands. "Son, I envy
you,"DeMille said.
And Corey had a feeling that the hugely egoed DeMille meant he wished he
could direct World War II.
