Subject: This week in radio history 19-25 December
From The Today in History, NY Times
12/19
1932 the British Broadcasting Corporation began transmitting overseas
with its Empire Service to Australia.
12/22
1920 WEAF, in New York City, aired the first broadcast of a prize
fight from ringside. The fight was broadcast from Madison Square Garden
where Joe Lynch defeated Peter Herman to retain the bantamweight title.
Bantamweights top the scales at 118 pounds. Just think, either of those
boxers could have been mistaken for the microphone stand.
1922 WEAF once again proved to be the pillar of radio promotion. This
time they broadcast radio's first double wedding ceremony. Four thousand
spectators watched as the two couples exchanged vows at Grand Central
Palace. The broadcast was made in conjunction with the American Radio
Exposition. The couples each got $100; a hefty sum in 1922 ($1268 in
2009 dollars).
12/23
In 1928, the National Broadcasting Company set up a permanent, coast to
coast network.
From Today=s Almanac --
In 1947, the transistor was invented, leading to a revolution in
communications and electronics.
12/24
1906 Professor Reginald A. Fessenden sent his first radio broadcast
from Brant Rock, MA. The program included a little verse, some violin
and a speech. (This is a disputed event according to some sources -ed).
1928 The first broadcast of The Voice of Firestone was heard. The
program aired each Monday evening at 8. The Voice of Firestone became a
hallmark in radio broadcasting. It kept its same night, time (in 1931
the start time changed to 8:30) and sponsor for its entire run.
Beginning on September 5, 1949, the program of classical and
semiclassical music was also seen on television.
1944 The Andrews Sisters starred in the debut of The Andrews Sisters'
Eight to the Bar Ranch on ABC. Patty, Maxene and LaVerne ran a fictional
dude ranch. George 'Gabby' Hayes was a regular guest along with Vic
Schoen's orchestra. The ranch stayed in operation until 1946.
12/25
1931 Lawrence Tibbett was the featured vocalist as radio came to the
Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. The first opera was Hansel
und Gretel, heard on the NBC network of stations. In between acts of the
opera, moderator Olin Downes would conduct an opera quiz, asking
celebrity guests opera related questions. The program's host and
announcer was Milton Cross. He worked out of the Met's Box 44.
1937 Arturo Toscanini conducted the first broadcast of Symphony of the
Air over NBC.
1939 The Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, was read by
Lionel Barrymore on The Campbell Playhouse on CBS. The reading of the
tale was an annual radio event for years, before and after.
1942 The longest, sponsored program in the history of broadcasting was
heard on NBC Blue network. The daylong Victory Parade's Christmas Party
of Spotlight Bands was heard over 142 radio stations. The marathon
broadcast was sponsored by Coca Cola.

Subject: RIP Adrienne Roy (Tollin)
Pop culture blogger Mark Evanier has a nice tribute to Adrieene Roy, former
wife
of OTR historian/author/re-creationist Anthony Tollin. Ms. Roy died on Tuesday
(14th), after a year-long bout with cancer.
[removed]
Evanier's piece recounts Adrienne's prolific career as a comic-book
colorist for DC Comics throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
She also attended many FOTR conventions, assisted on her husband Anthony's
re-creations, handled Anthony's dealer's tables while he was occupied in
rehearsals, and provided voices for the audio-CD documentary "Too Hot for
Radio," which Anthony produced for Great American Audio in the 1990s.

Subject: Adrienne Roy, 1953-2010, prolific Batman and DC
Comics colorist, FOTR
Adrienne Roy lost a year-long battle with ovarian cancer Tuesday in her
Austin, TX home. Her colorful storytelling was a fixture for more than two
decades in DC Comic's top-selling titles. Adrienne is best remembered for
her 189-issue run on BATMAN, her 16-year, 202-issue reign on DETECTIVE
COMICS and her 14-year run on Marv Wolfman and George Perez's NEW TEEN
TITANS, though she also had substantial runs on SUPERMAN and most of DC's
best-selling titles. She exemplified the story-based coloring of that era of
DC Comics, and always tried to tell the story with color, focusing attention
where it should be and building the mood and drama of the story through her
color choices, and she lovingly produced more than 50,000 pages of color art
during her amazing career. She attended at least 20 FOTR conventions, often
helped me manage things when I directed recreations at FOTR and SPERDVAC,
and was friends with many FOTR guests and radio professionals. It was the
great joy of my life to spend a quarter century in partnership with
Adrienne, as marriage partners, co-parents of our wonderful daughter
Katrina, and artistic collaborators. My full obituary press release of one
of comicdom's great talents can be read at:

Subject: Wi-Fi Radio / Squeezebox
My brother surprised me with a WiFi radio, called LG Squeezebox. Charles
mentioned that he just bought one. There are 6 presets. I loaded 4
classical music stations and 2 old time radio stations. That radio has been
playing almost continuously since I got it two days ago! (I wonder if there
is some way to add more presets?)
The only OTR I really enjoyed was "Mr. President" -- starring Martin Van
Buren. There are surely more than 2 OTR stations. I intend to check out
the BBC and CBC, too. It is neat to listen to ABC: Australian Broadcasting
Company; WQXR, NYC & Newark; some baroque music channel, etc. I will be
visiting my children and grandchildren over Christmas, but they do not have
a router. So, I might as well leave the Squeezebox home. Or I could buy
them a [removed]!
What a neat present! My brother and I haven't exchanged gifts since about
1970 or [removed] I will be sending him some of my favorite OTR programs on
CDs.

Subject: Blake Edwards
Andrew asked:
Recently obituaries of Blake Edwards say he helped write the 1938 radio
script for the Mercury Theatre broadcast of The War of the Worlds. I am
skeptical of this. Can anyone provide any information confirming or denying
this claim?
Full denial. While Blake Edwards was "da bomb" and "da man" when it came
to creating such radio shows as RICHARD DIAMOND and TV classics like
MR. LUCKY and the "hip" PETER GUNN, he had nothing to do with scripting the
War of the Worlds script. That was primarily a Howard Koch claim to fame.
You have no idea how many times I've seen obituaries that provide incorrect
information. Where the information originates (often) is from the family
relatives or a representative who issues a press release, and newspapers
reprint what they choose from the release. However, in this case, I
would think it's safe to say the Edwards family never put that to print,
and was a mistake caused by the same journalist who thinks Superman was
created
in the 1950s by George Reeves, also known as that guy in the Rocky Horror
Picture Show.
