Jim Widner commented:
The agreement with those two magazines was strictly a scratch-my-back
approach - an ad in the magazine for the radio series with a mention for
publications on the radio show. That was it. They did provide stories from
the publications for the staff at NBC to find potential stories to adapt as
part of that exchange.
Jim is absolutely 100 percent correct. Almost every radio program I ever
researched that involved adaptations of short stories from magazines had the
same case scenario. The advertising potential of the magazine name being
promoted every week was valueable. Whether the authors of the stories were
paid extra or not was a case by case scenario, contracted between the
publisher and the author. Some sponsors paid as much as $10,000 a week to
have their product pitched on a radio show. And sales of the magazine as a
result of the "scratch-my-back" arrangement was certainly worth more than a
weekly fee.
As for The Digital Deli, I agree with Jim. They, like some people who have
extensive web-sites, are trying to make an effort to document old time radio
and clean up the errors and myths -- but they have generated tons of
mistakes. This is the result of two problems. One, many mysteries remain
unsolved and their "theories" and "assumptions" keep getting mistaken as fact
and carried over into other periodicals and web-sites (including Wikipedia).
Second, The Digital Deli has made lots of errors by consulting the wrong
sources (as Jim pointed out) and rather than consult good sources, they turn
a blind cheek towards the past efforts of others, and speak negative about
prior works. Heck, according to them, I'm probably the worst researcher out
there.
Case in point: They document a radio show called CASE DISMISSED and claim
(and I'm quoting them from their site) that I "fabricated every title for his
CASE DISMISSED article and log from whole [removed] we've seen this before in
the vast majority of Grams' logs and articles." They could have saved
themselves the embarrassment by contacting me before posting such a "rude"
comment by asking what my source of information was, rather than state I made
up the titles. I have two bound volumes of original radio scripts and I took
the dates and titles from the front page of each script. I just dug up those
scripts for a person in Canada who e-mailed me, asking why The Digital Deli
was being rude. They were apparently researching the show because they had
two recordings of the show that don't have the same titles and dates listed
on The Digital Deli, but two of them had titles in my log. I copied the front
page of each radio script for them to help assist them with their project and
that's how I learned (from the person in Canada) that there were apparently
two runs or batches of episodes.
Just the other week, a friend of mine named Dan e-mailed and said he was
doing a project about STAY TUNED FOR TERROR. He said he found The Digital
Deli's web-site and read where they questioned the validity of the log I had
in RADIO DRAMA (McFarland Publishers). He asked me where my source came from
and I told him the scripts at the Library of Congress, which were registered
for copyright. Dan agreed the info I consulted was better than The Digital
Deli's "assumptions" (Deli consults newspaper listings and Radio Yesteryear's
site and on the Digest a couple years ago we've already debunked why it's not
smart to consult those venues when researching OTR) and Dan thanked me for
taking a few minutes to answer his question. Kudos to Dan for consulting the
source, and not a site that questions other people's published efforts.
Everyone's efforts, no matter how small or large, are major contributions to
the hobby. (Twice in the past two years at FOTR, on stage, I debunked a
number of OTR myths in front of a crowd of people and not once did I ever
state the names who started those myths and mistakes. I didn't see any point
in that. But in debunking the myths, I did a slide show presentation with
scans of proof and did not make "assumptions.")
As for the "audition" recording for X MINUS ONE, I am surprised people are
still commenting when I posted the answer some time ago on the Digest. In
short, most auditions were NOT aired. Why some people keep posting the
suggestion that audition recordings all have airdates is unknown to me. It is
the recording dates which might keep getting mistaken for airdates. (Every
time I listed the date of an audition recording, I consulted the vendor or
dealer who had the original studio master and verified the recording date.)
Audition recordings like the X MINUS ONE recording, never aired prior to the
series premiere, but it was used as part of the series later. After all, if
you were a producer and spent money on an audition, wouldn't you want to save
money by using it even if it's not the first episode of the series?

Subject: Rogue's Gallery
Kenneth Clarke asked: What can anyone tell me about an OTR series called
"Rogues Gallery"?
I've only just heard about it. It sounds like it might be a detective
series. Who
starred in it and was it very popular? General information, specific facts,
anything
at all would be helpful.
Yes, it was a detective program. In his best-known incarnation, Richard Rogue
trailed lovely blondes and protected witnesses in the new tough-guy persona
of Dick Powell. This was the transition series for Powell in his quest to be
recognized as an actor rather than a singer. It had some of the same cute
elements that would make RICHARD DIAMOND a high spot four years later. The
gimmick on ROGUE'S GALLERY was the presence of an alter ego, "Eugor," (Rogue
spelled backward), who arrived in the middle of the story to goad Rogue on
his final deduction.
The answer I typed above originates from John Dunning's ON THE AIR, which has
been recommended by everyone Universally (and in past postings) as the one
book any OTR fan should have. It's not anything definitive, but it's a great
starting point for OTR in general.

Subject: Shadow sculpture
Ruben Procopio just sent me a link to his blog, featuring digital photos of a
new Shadow sculpture. Ruben was responsible for the Green Hornet and Kato
sculpture that came out a couple years ago (and which I have standing proudly
on the bookshelf in the spare bedroom). Looks like another winner. Anyone who
wants to see the sculpture from beginnings to the final production, check out
the link.

From Those Were The Days
11/28
1932 Groucho Marx performed on radio for the first time.
11/29
1950 "I Fly Anything", starring singer Dick Haymes in the role of
cargo pilot Dockery Crane, premiered on ABC. With a title like that, is
it any wonder the show only lasted one season? Haymes went back to
singing and did very well, thank you.
11/30
1940 Lucille Ball and Cuban musician Desi Arnaz were married.
12/2
1932 The Adventures of Charlie Chan was first heard on the NBC Blue
network.
12/4
1932 "Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. North and South America and all the
ships at sea. Let's go to press!" The Jergens Journal aka The Walter
Winchell Show and later, Kaiser Frazer News was first heard on the NBC
Blue network. Winchell kept that gossip show going on the radio for 23
years. It was sponsored at first by Jergens lotion and, later, by Dryad
deodorant, Kaiser Frazer cars and Richard Hudnut shampoo.
1933 One of America's great radio shows made the leap to the big time.
Ma Perkins moved from WLW in Cincinnati, OH to the NBC Red network. The
show proved to be so popular that it was later carried on both CBS and NBC.
