Subject: re: Bob and Ray

Peter Boe wrote that he is looking for more Bob and Ray material. The ASIFA Hollywood Animation Archive has just released a bunch of Piels Brother cartoon ads from the 60s, which were voiced by Bob and Ray. Here's the link:

I haven't had a chance to watch this yet but I'm sure looking forward to it!

He also mentions that many GI's complained that they missed the
commercials and wanted programs just as they heard them back home but
obviously the military prevailed because the commercials were deleted.

That reminds me: wasn't there a feature on the made-for-AFRS program
"Command Performance" where troops could request sound effects of things from home?
Say, a milk wagon rumbling through a neighborhood, a screen door slamming
shut, a hot dog vendor yelling in a ball park. Wonder if anyone ever
requested, say, the Pepsi jingle, the Bromo-Seltzer train or the Lifebuoy foghorn?

Subject: A New Book By Jim Cox

Just when we thought that Jim Cox, a frequent contributor to the Old Time
Radio Digest, could not come up with a new format or a new subject matter for
his scholarly writings about our hobby, enter THIS DAY IN NETWORK RADIO.
Anyone familiar with Jim's seven or so other writings can expect the same
accuracy and focus on interest-level for those of us in the hobby. But this
format is quite unusual. It is a "daily calendar of births, deaths, debuts,
cancellations and other events in broadcasting history."

All of the entries have been arranged for each day of the 366-day Gregorian
calendar; in other words, from January 1st to December 31st. In addition to
significant births and deaths, which we also have been learning from Ron
Sayles in this Digest, Jim Cox includes important moments in radio
broadcasting, as well as when a show debuted and was canceled.

A historiographer can thoroughly use this work when desiring very accurate
reference material; or just someone like me, who will never write a book, can
just scan through the dates at random, or glance through the index until
someone or something very interesting draws my attention.

I have only one criticism of this book, and it certainly is not the fault of
the author: My birthdate was not a very significant day in radio history!

Subject: AFRS commercials

hi all --

In the ongoing discussion about the deletion of commercials from AFRS
rebroadcasts, Jim Arva shared the remembrances of his wife's uncle, who
said the deletion of commercials was done because the military did not
want to be seen as endorsing certain products. When Jim shared what he
did, it rang a bell with me.

Something similar happened in 1969 when the Army took part in providing
live television coverage of the Apollo 11 mission to viewers in Alaska.
Viewers there had been dependent on videotaped or filmed programming
to that point, but at the request of Alaska's two [removed] Senators, the
Army sent a mobile television ground station to Anchorage. The CBS
coverage was chosen by lot and would be shown on all three stations in
Anchorage.

According to the CBS News-produced book "10:56:20 PM EDT 7/20/69," "The
signal sent to Alaska was that of WCBS-TV in New York, transmitted from
Fort Monmouth in New Jersey via a satellite to the receiver in
Anchorage. The only parts of the broadcast the Army would not send were
the commercials, which were deleted at Fort Monmouth."

Subject: Jack Benny's Granddaughter Hits it [removed]

This article from the financial times highlights the success of Joanna Meiseles at launching a chain of children's hair salons. She is a multi-millionaire in her own right, as well as being Jack Benny's granddaughter.

I always find this stuff interesting because when you think about it, it is uniquely American that you can have a first generation immigrant be a small-town tailor, the second generation be one of the most beloved entertainers of a generation and the third and fourth generations produce a top neurosurgeon (who must be her brother as Jack and Mary only had one child, Joan) and a successful entrepreneur.

Subject: eat your serial, kids

Jody Davis writes (in part):

One more thing. Speed Gibson of the Int'l
Secret Police always cracked me up for some reason. It's a juvenile
series and contains more corn than a square mile of Nebraska real
estate. But I bet it'll crack you up, too.

I'll have to give Speed Gibson a try! Personally, I have enjoyed the few
episodes I've heard of Dantro the Planet Man (hope I'm remembering the
title correctly) for exactly the same reason -- corny as all get out!
It's on my list to listen to with my son.
