Subject: NBC
I'll make this short and sweet. I've heard of
several channels on which OTR programs were broadcast.
Some of them were MBS (Mutual Broadcasting Service), CBS,
AFRS (Armed Forces radio Service) and NBC. I was just
reading a book about OTR which lists NBC Blue and NBC
Red. What's the deal? Why wasn't there an ABC network?
Could someone out there provide an answer?
Another OTR Fan,

Subject: Renewed interest Hal's book
I noticed in recent postings a renewed interest in Hal Stone's book. I too
must join the bandwagon. I have just finished reading the book for the second
time and it was just as fresh as the first time. Hal has a way of transporting
one back to the actual days of Olde Tyme Radio. I have always had this fantasy
of wanting to be in Olde Tyme Radio, Hal's book comes closest to satisfying
that fantasy. He describes in such detail how a studio was set up that you
almost feel as if you are standing at a microphone saying your lines with Hal
next to you saying his. If only. Thanks Hal, thanks for a great book. Those of
you who do not have it yet . . . WHY NOT!!!

Subject: Re: the Jughead voice
(SNIP how much higher was the character voice vs. your real voice at the time
you played the character? (I know that you changed over time so this is a
moving target) Was it difficult to keep the voice correct and constant
during the broadcast, especially when you where older?
For what it's worth David, I believe I was able to keep the same squeaky/
raspy voice over the years. It was due in part to be able to somehow or
tuther use my vocal chords to capture the sound that I originally created
for the character.
When I started playing the part, I was 13, but my voice had already changed,
so I added the squeak, which was not that big a challenge considering my age
at that time. But (to those that know me) I have a reasonably deep voice,
but I can still stretch the vocal chords to get there when we are asked to
do "Archie" recreations at the various OTR Conventions. I think that stems
in great part to my radio training. Radio Actors had to be able to pitch
ones voice to different ranges (very young, old or "ancient") to compete
(audition) for a wide range of parts.
As a matter of fact, I did use two different voices for the Jughead
Character during the shows run. For the first few years, I "played" him
more laconic, sleepy and "dead pan" sounding. That's the way I saw him in
the Comic book. A few Years later, we got a new director assigned to the
program, and he asked me to "Brighten" him up a bit, and that's the way it
remained to this day.
Hope that answers your question.

Subject: Thurber
There was a TV series (critically acclaimed but low
rated) so it was cancelled after about 13 weeks.
William Windom starred as Thurber like character in a
program called "My World, and Welcome To It"...
I remember he used to talk to the camera and it was
unusual because it was different (no actors are
"supposed-to" acknowledge the camera.
It was on in the 1970's.
Andy Blatt
[ADMINISTRIVIA: Actually, it aired on NBC in the 1969-1970 season. It was
later re-run on CBS in 1972, but it's technically a 1960's show. --cfs3]

Is OTR author Robert LaGuardia still with us? I'm anxious to know, and any
details of his life. Anyone that can fill in the blanks for me (even a
little), I'll be grateful to hear from directly. Bob made a valuable
contribution through his 1977 Ballantine treatise From Ma Perkins to Mary
Hartman: The Illustrated History of Soap Operas.

Subject: Tracking Down an Episode
Hi all,
I do hope this forum is appropriate for this request. I am trying to track
down an old radio show I heard as a child. It was in the Suspense/Lights
Out genre. A woman suspected her husband of wanting to kill her, and one
evening as the two are gathered around the organ or piano singing "Work
for the Night is Coming", she turns the tables, kills him, finishes the
song, and that's the end of the episode. At least that's how I remember
the episode from when I was ten or eleven. Does anyone know which
show/episode I'm referring to? Thank you very much for your time.
Bruce
