I just wanted to mention that this coming August 11th will mark the 15th
anniversary of the passing of the great Phil Harris.
Sheesh! Fifteen years already? I remember seeing it in the newspaper
and telling my mother about it. It was mentioned that he died at age
91. when I mentioned that to my mother, she was surprised he had lived
so long because he "was a boozer." I had to remind her that Jack Benny
wasn't a cheapskate, either.

Hi Folks.
For those of you who collect vintage wireless sets, you might be interested in
a documentary coming up on the BBC World Service on Friday 20th August. Its
called 'The Wireless World of Gerry Wells' and features the British collector
who has over 1200 old sets in his house. UK times that it is on are 0905,
1205, 1505 + 2005. To find out US equivalents the best way is probably just to
check out the BBC World Service website where there are details available on
the programme.
Cheers ! Graeme ( ORCA / UK )

Hi, I'm trying to find documentation (papers, archival documents) on Scott
Bishop the writer of NBC's "Dark Fantasy." I've seen logs listing him as
likewise writing of "Mysterious Traveler," and "Strange Dr. Karnac." I'm also
interested in any information about his alleged pulp writing. Thanks, Matthew

Ken asked about some proof that Jack Benny really played the violin. I
recall seeing him play with Isaac Stern. It was a video, probably from his
TV show. They played Bach's Double Violin Concerto, and Jack did a good
job. No goofs, no comedy, just good music!

Subject: Earliest canned laugh-track?
I recently had someone donate a disc to my collection containing "Guest
Start" episodes number 11 and 12, dating from 1947.
Number 12 in the series, featuring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, really
surprised me - they obviously recorded their segment separately from the
Guest Star announcer and orchestra segments. Also, it contained a very
badly done canned laugh-track.
That got me wondering what the earliest instance of canned laughs in a
radio show might be.
According to the Paley Center's blog, the first one they know of was done
on a filmed 1948 local television series in Los Angeles and filmed shows
were including pre-recorded guffaws in the early fifties:
[removed]
The "Guest Star" show's canned laughter was probably done with disc
dubbing techniques, so it's rather primitive and doesn't come off very
well. Did AFRS ever try this during the War or early post-War period?
Any syndicated shows from the 30s or 40s you can think of that tried this
technique?
