Hi all--
I just read that Bob Carroll Jr. passed away today
after a brief illness. He was 88. While Bob is of
course known best for his work on various Lucy TV
shows from the '50s through the '80s, let's not forget
he, Madelyn Pugh and Jess Oppenheimer wrote the
scripts for most of the My Favorite Husband episodes
(one of my favorite OTR comedies, btw).

Subject: Lone Ranger's first name
On Saturday, January 27, 2007, at 11:33 PM, Joe Mackey wrote:
1936 - The Green Hornet was introduced by its famous theme song, The
Flight of the Bumble Bee. You may remember that the title character
was named Britt Reid. He was, in fact, supposed to be the great nephew
of John Reid, the Lone Ranger.
Despite all evidence to the contrary, the myth about the Lone Ranger's
first name being "John" refuses to go away.
Terry Salomonson, the expert on all WXYZ shows who has the original
disks of every episode of "The Lone Ranger," has advised us many times
(most recently at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in Aberdeen,
MD) that there is no mention in any of the scripts of "John" in
connection with the surviving Reid brother who became the Lone Ranger.

For those who have not seen it, let me recommend a visit to a fantastic
collector-produced website devoted to all things Popeye. Long-time collector
Bruce Shults has assembled the fruits of his 40-year pursuit of Popeye
collectibles into a photo-packed source of knowledge.
The website includes great images and information about the Popeye Wheatena
radio show. Check it all out at [removed]~thimbletheatre/.

Subject: Ghost of Benjamin Sweet
On Saturday, January 27, 2007, at 11:33 PM, Kathy Hammel wrote:
Speaking of lost shows, does anyone know anything about a show called
"The Ghost of Benjamin Sweet"? In a September 1938 "Radio Guide" I
saw an article about it. The lead ghost is played by Karl Swenson,
and Ed Latimer plays one of the side kick ghosts, Theobald Tubbs. If
there are any existing episodes, I'd sure like to hear a show or two,
and would appreciate being pointed in their direction.
Once again we turn to the pages of Jay Hickerson's invaluable "3rd
Revised Ultimate History of Network Radio Programming" where we read on
page 182:
"Ghost of Benjamin Sweet, The (written by Pauline Gibson and Fred
Gilsdorf)
CBS, Fridays, 8 PM, duration March 25, 1938 to August 26, 1938.
CBS, Sundays, 10 PM, duration September 4, 1938 to September 25, 1938.
No known surviving audio copies"
Apparently the article in "Radio Guide" did not create enough audience
interest in the series' second chance on network radio and the show was
yanked before the ink was dry in the magazine.

How about Red Skelton? His radio show was very funny. He made an excellent
transition to television. But you had to see him. What he did on
television, he could not have done on radio -- unless some narrator told you
what he was doing!

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
In the Sunday, January 28 "Highlights" section of TV Guide, there was an
article called "Webb-Master" that said Jack Webb's TV persona "helped set the
tone for man TV cops who followed." It featured a terrific color photo of
him
with one hand up in the air like it was holding something. I'm pretty sure
that this photo originally showed Jack Webb holding a cigarette but it
appears
that TV Guide removed it.
