Folks;
Received this question on the website; please note I took the liberty of
editing it somewhat, so any mistakes are mine, not the original authors.
Also, please copy the list on any responses, as it may be of interest to some
of us here, as well.

Subject: Family Guy?
In Digest #103, Derek Tague asks:
and 2) the last five notes of the TV cartoon "Family Guy"
("he's a fam-lee guy") sounds like the first five notes
of the Jell-O radio jingle ("J-E-L-L-O")?
This might not be completely crazy. The very first few episodes of the
show's first season had titles like "Death Has a Shadow" and "Mind over
Murder," with the intention of having them resemble OTR show titles
(these titles were unrelated to the plot of the show). If I remember
the DVD commentary correctly, I believe show creator Seth MacFarlane
mentioned Suspense specifically. This practice was dropped after a few
episodes since they started confusing which title went with which show.
Obviously, MacFarlane has at least a casual familiarity with some OTR.
However, the bulk of the cultural references in Family Guy appear to be
to movies and TV from Seth's own childhood.

Subject: She wasn't a bottle babe
Charlie North brings up the health issues affecting Marian Jordan, a matter
of record on this forum many times over the years.
In researching "The Great Radio Sitcoms"
([removed]), a book that
was more fun to write than maybe any other I have done, I ran across this:
"The Jordans' daughter, Kathryn, age 17 in 1937 when this occurred, spoke on
a British Broadcasting Corporation series ... about her mother and father's
career. She confirmed to the public for perhaps the first time that Marian
Jordan had suffered a severe nervous breakdown. Placed in a psychiatric
facility for therapy and care, at the peak of her illness she was suicidal.
When Marian was able to return home, she continued therapy until she was
able to return to the show. It didn't happen overnight. It had been
announced that she would rejoin the cast when the show resumed following a
summer break in the fall of 1938. But Marian wasn't up to it. Not until
the broadcast of April 18, 1939, in fact, did she permanently reappear, her
absence lasting about 18 months."
There is a little more discussion in regard to Marian's absence and return
to the program in my book. Speculation about her sudden disappearance
ranged from fatigue, rheumatic fever, alcoholism and a host of presumptive
causes. Think how the cable networks would have handled this had they been
in business then.

Subject: More OTR on the Net
One of the newer OTR shows, "The Old Parlour Radio" is broadcast on several
Canadian radio stations and also on the Internet. The host, Loran Fevens,
usually presents two programs per hour-long show and gives a little history
of the programs as well. The easiest way to listen is to go to [removed]
and click on "CJLS Audio Vault" at the right center of the page. A pop-up
window will then give you the last four shows. While there, you might also
want to stream Fevens' "Sentimental Journey" show, which presents really good
music from the 1930s, '40s and '50s.

Subject: THE NANA PUZZLE
I am trying to learn as much as I can about a company identified
as: NANA that syndicated radio programs.
Any information that subscribers might be able to provide regarding
the company: ownership, how and with whom it did business, programs
(Big Sister and others) that may have been produced and distributed
by them, would be most helpful.

Subject: Irna's kin dies
One of drama mama Irna Phillips' two adopted children has died. Variety
reports that Katherine Phillips Hughes, who penned "A World Apart," a
daytime serial carried by ABC-TV from March 30, 1970 through June 25, 1971,
died May 12 at Brentwood, Calif.
Her TV narrative mirrored the life story of Katherine's famous mother who
was hired as story editor for it upon leaving "As the World Turns" after 14
years following a dispute with Procter & Gamble. Some speculated that
helping Katherine secure a place in the industry was her mom's real reason
for departing her favorite serial.
Katherine, 65, is survived by her brother.

Subject: OTR-Family Guy
Derek mentioned the Jell-O radio jingle/Family Guy theme similarity.
There's other connections to OTR in Family Guy (not a place one would
expect
them, but creator Seth McFarlen seems to be heavily into all types of
popular
culture). The first episode of the series is title "Death Has a Shadow,"
though the title has nothing to do with death or shadows. When the
series
was beginning, he named the episodes, randomly, using titles from the
series Suspense. Watch carefully, there are plenty of other examples out
there.
