The other night I was watching a rerun of the television show Matlock.
Imagine my surprise when I saw Sheldon Leonard do his Jack Benny tout
routine with Andy Griffith. Jack's influence is everywhere.

Thanks to Martin Grams for noting Ed Walker's nomination to the Radio Hall of
Fame. I think those in the OTR community will also be especially interested
in the "National - Pioneer" category, where the nominees are "Suspense," "The
WLS Barn Dance," "The Dr. Demento Show," and Chickenman creator Dick Orkin. I
know where my own sympathies lie but I reckon anyone who wins in this
category will deserve it. I urge everyone to vote before the August 1
deadline by going to:

Dear Jim-
From: Jim Hilliker <jimhilliker@[removed];
The H. B. Warner who was one of the judges on the Gateway to Hollywood
radio program was obviously Harry Warner of the Warner Brothers movie
studio.
Not so obvious from here, as his (anglicized) name was Harry MORRIS Warner?
So, while Jack Warner was head of the studio, Harry Warner was still part
of the Warner Bros. executive team, and went by [removed] Warner.
Again, [removed] Warner was a wonderful character actor of the era.
Best,
-Craig W.

I tend to think "[removed] Warner" referred to the eminent character actor of that
name. He appeared in scores of movies, played Jesus Christ in DeMille's KING
OF KINGS, and was often used by Frank Capra (nominated for an Oscar for his
work in LOST HORIZON). He also turns up as one of the bridge-playing
"ghosts", I believe, in SUNSET BOULEVARD. First name, Henry.

Subject: More on H B Warner
Jim Hilliker wrote that "The H. B. Warner who was one of the judges on the
Gateway to Hollywood radio
program was obviously Harry Warner of the Warner Brothers movie studio."
Perhaps, but HB Warner was also the credited name of an actor whose career
spanned from the silent era to the 1950s. HB Warner's roles included Jesus in
the DeMille's silent "King of Kings", and gave his penultimate performance in
1958 with a part in DeMille's talkie "The Ten Commandments". Warner also
played Colonel Nielsen in the Bulldog Drummond Movies, and filmed several
performances for Frank Capra, including Old Man Gower the druggist in "It's a
Wonderful Life". The Internet Movie Database reports that this Warner was
English-born and the son and grandson of English actors, and appeared on
Broadway before making his way to Hollywood.

Subject: June Foray's autobiography!!
Yes, it's FINALLY coming. I'd been after her since I interviewed her for my
Paul Frees book 6 years ago to get Her book written. She held back some
things about Frees and Walter Tetley at the time, wanting to save it for her
own book. In fact, she's written a little about Tetley and a LOT about Frees
in this book. Well, it took a Lot of coaxing, and a lot of help from Mark
Evanier to get it down, but it's Finally ready. It's uploaded to the printer
now and books should be in people's hands in about 2 weeks!

Subject: Jack Benny radio on tv
Recently I ran across some Jack Benny tv shows on [removed] One I
thought everyone here would be interested in. Its from 560101 where
Jack re-creates his radio new years drama "The New Tenant", as he did it
on radio: actors standing around a couple of mics, Gene Twomby (sp)
doing the sound effects and so forth. (The kid playing the new year
either had a great memory or he was actually reading the script. He
couldn't be more than three or four years old and had a large role).
