Subject: Audition shows

Someone commented:

If the idea is it was a broadcast audition, then why did it not appear in any
newspaper listing? If it was an audition for sponsors to listen to, then why
does it have a broadcast date? Also, usually auditions are in a different
form than the way the show ends up.

Auditions were not usually broadcast and would not appear in a newspaper listing.
An "audition recording" was created for a number of reasons, trying out actors for
their voices and acting skills but most importantly to convince a network and/or
a sponsor to pick up and buy the series. If they couldn't sell the series, it
became what fans refer to as an "unaired pilot."

While there are a few audition recordings that feature a slightly different cast
(usually because by the time the series was bought, some of the actors were not
able to commit to a full-time schedule for varied reasons), producers were
smart enough to make an audition recording as part of the regular series and
not always the first episode of the series. Hence a producer could create an
audition, it convinces the network to buy a series, they begin producing the
episodes and somewhere along the line they slip the audition into the rotation
of episodes broadcast to save expenses and make use of the recording already
made.

Subject: Old Time Radio Christmas Show

Those of us who are OTR fans feel very fortunate when an otr re-creation is
being planned because, except during conventions, they are few and far
between. I knew Michael Rye, a great talent, and I am sure that his widow
will do an excellent job on Dec. 3 and 4th. It is unfortunate that these
opportunities to enjoy live OTR are limited to large cities; some fans never
get to see these, if they live in smaller towns. The $20 disturbs me,
however, since no mention was given of who the actors are. The great Peggy
Webber, who produces the California Artist Radio Theater and has a
star-studded cast of former radio actors as well as stage actors, charges
only $10 for seniors, and $15 for others. I would suggest that Jerry
Williams list the cast members. I will have to see that before I part with my
$20.
