Not exactly OTR, but this week a friend brought be an old 78 he'd found in a
relatives attic. It was recorded May, 1943 at an Army boot Camp in Texas by
a young medic just before he left for Europe where he was killed. It was a
very touching recording for his parents. He talked about his buddies,
getting drunk, life in boot camp and the food "Pork and Beans, no meat!" all
in the space of about 30 secs per side. I wonder if there are many of these
"USO LIving Records" floating around? He said there was a long line of men
waiting behind him to make their own records.

I'm a big fan of the "Bold Venture" series of OTR programs. Was this
ever a movie? Contact me offline with the answer.

If it wasn't, in my opinion, it should have been!

Subject: DRAGNET: "The Big Cop"

At the time I wrote MY NAME'S FRIDAY, "The Big Cop" - where Friday verbally
lashes the "bad cop" of the title - was a lost radio show. A year or so ago,
I saw that it was now available on some collections, but I'd already gotten
an armful of CD's and didn't want to reorder a set just for the one show.

Today, I googled the episode and found two podcast/streaming audio
presentations - but in both cases, the episode was actually "The Big Set-Up"
(stolen furs and jewels masterminded by a hat-check girl) - not "The Big
Cop." So now I wonder if the show has been "found" after all.

To anyone who collects the radio DRAGNET - is "The Big Cop" truly
available? And if it is, can someone please email an .mp3 of it to me?

I'll send a signed brand new copy of MY NAME'S FRIDAY to the first person who
can get it to me. I'd like to have it for a future presentation.

Thank you,
Michael

Bob Ruble asked about a song that has "Say hello to your Uncle Max". It uses
several Irish family names. Can anyone help?"

I am sitting here with that song going through my head but can't come up with the
title, I think it is 'Dear Old Donegal'. Shake hands with your Uncle Mike, me boy,
shake hands with your sister Kate. And this is the girl you used to swing down on
the garden gate. Shake hands with all the neighbors and kiss the colleens all, yer
welcome as the flowers of spring in dear old Donegal.

Now the stupid song is stuck in my [removed] and over and I'm not even sure of
the name of it.

Great article on Art Linkletter. My 87 year old dad met him 2 years ago and they

Instead of saying he is a right-wing political activist, I would say he is a man

Looking forward to the new hotel!

Anyone editing an OTR newsletter might want to update their readers, and if
you know of anyone attending who isn't on the internet, might want to spread
the word. Reason, I know a couple people who are not on the internet and not
part of any OTR club and they won't know about it till they arrive at the
hotel.

That certainly looks like Bob Bailey in the reporter's role. The fact that
the voice doesn't sound like him is probably because the scene may have been
filmed "MOS", as they say, in other words, without sound and the dialogue
later dubbed. This was often used when filming a scene under conditions
where wild sound cannot be controlled, and a waterfront would certainly
qualify.

Hello again --

I believe the Allan Sherman "Shake Hands with your Uncle Max" was a satire on
"MacNamara's Band," sung by Bing Crosby (with a couple of additions by Danny
Kaye). Several of the Irish musicians are named in this song, and Sherman
expanded the "name-calling" to include a veritable phone book of Jewish names
he was no doubt familiar with during his youth. There's a hilarious Spike
Jones take-off of MacNamara's Band, in which the musicians are described
playing the instruments in Spike's band: the washboard, the whistle, the tin
cans, gunshots, etc. etc.

Just off the top of my head I know that Fred MacMurry had his own show for a

well acted and an enjoyable program to listen to.

Subject: Bob Bailey's "dubbed" voice.

Since the scene with Bob Bailey is an outdoor scene in BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ,
it is more than likely his voice was dubbed.
When that film was shot, portability in shooting a major motion picture was
minimal. Enormous amounts of equipment had to be moved from the studio to an
outdoor location in order to shoot on 35mm film. Many times it was easier to
not shoot with sound, or to shoot with minimal sound equipment and use the
sound track as a "scratch" track (or reference) track. Back at the studio the
footage would be looped and actors would say their words into a mike to match
the visual scene. It is likely, though I have no proof, that Bob Bailey was
not available to dub his own voice and someone else was used. This was common
practice back then and is still being used today, though it is practiced far
more in Europe than in the USA.

Does anyone know a source for photos
of radio performers? I have been listening
to recordings of the CBS Radio Mystery
Theater for some time now and have wondered
what the many actors/actresses look like. Is
it possible to ever discover the faces of those
persons?

 Journal

Sean Dougherty asked about Art Linkletter "Who knew he has become a
right-wing political activist in his old age?" Anybody who has heard him
speak in the past 20 years, that's who. Actually it dates back further, back
to the 1969 tragedy of his daughter's alleged suicide which was claimed to be
due to drugs. He became an outspoken anti-drug zealot and made some
broadcast appearances and a record "We Love You, Call Collect" on the
subject. It seemed that from that point on he faded from the "light
entertainment" scene. I think that such frivolous things didn't seem
important to him anymore. In his old age he remains a riveting speaker even
if we disagree with his politics and his logic.
