Subject: Radio for the Memorial Day [removed]
Just a reminder that this Saturday, "Those Were the Days" (now in its 43rd
year)
will focus on rare recordings of big bands as heard by servicemen and woman
over
the Armed Forces Radio Service. We'll be joined by big band historian Karl
Pearson as we tune in to Woody Herman on a 1943 "Downbeat" program, Art Kassel
and His "Kassels in the Air" on "Music From Your Hometown," Charlie Barnet and
his orchestra on a 1946 "Magic Carpet" program, two "One Night Stand" remotes
(featuring the orchestras of Johnny Long and Count Basie), and much more! The
fun begins at 1:00 pm CST on WDCB ([removed])-and if you miss it, it'll be
archived for the next week at [removed]!
Then on Sunday, "Radio's Golden Age" will feature a rare broadcast from the
"Doctors at War" series, in addition to a military-themed episode of "Fibber
McGee and Molly"...and, for good measure, a post-war episode of "The
Whistler."
Our Sunday show airs from noon to 2 pm CST at [removed] Full details
can
be found in the Spring issue of Nostalgia Digest.
Our best wishes to you for this Memorial Day holiday.

Subject: Hal Jackson, RIP
Harold Baron Jackson, whose professional name was Hal Jackson, died May 23,
2012 in New York City; he was 96 years old. Jackson was one of the first
African-Americans to appear on radio in the 1930s and was the first of his
race to host a national network broadcast in the 1950s.
In the 1930s, he was unable to broadcast the baseball games of the Homestead
Grays of the Negro League when they played in Griffith Stadium in Washington,
DC since blacks were not permitted in the broadcast booth. Through a ruse,
Jackson got on the air at WINX in DC in 1939 by funneling sponsorship dollars
through a white-owned advertising agency to buy himself a 15 minute show
slot, which he termed "The Bronze Review." The white station management did
not know that "bronze" was an upscale term for African-Americans in the local
Washington community.
On his debut night, Jackson's first guest was Mary McLeod Bethune, FDR's
Director of Negro Affairs. His later guests on the program included Lena
Horne, first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and a young Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. By
the time the station management realized a black man was hosting the show, it
was too popular to be taken off the air.
Jackson spent the rest of his life on the radio, in Washington, DC and New
York City, broadcasting sports, variety shows, and spinning records. In the
1970's he became a station owner, buying WLIB in Manhattan and later adding
an FM station which became one of New York's most popular. His company
eventually owned stations in five different cities. For the past two decades,
he hosted an R & B classics music show on WBLS. He was active in radio until
his death.
Survivors include his fourth wife, his two children by his second wife, and
nine grandchildren.
Jackson's career is highlighted in Ryan Ellett's recent book, "Encyclopedia
of Black Radio in the United States, 1921-1955" (McFarland, 2012.)
