Subject: First movie to include radio in the stroyline??

Hi. Forgive me, but I forget if I asked this question before, about two
years ago. I learned about a 1925 Our Gang film called "Mary, Queen of
Tots" which featured a short scene showing Uncle John Daggett of KHJ radio
in Los Angeles, with the radio station as part of the plot of the movie,
after the kids turn on a radio. in somebody's home.

I'm wondering if this may have been the first Hollywood movie to feature
radio or radio broadcasting as part of the storyline. Anybody know the
answer?

The reason you see "714" on Sgt. Friday's badge is that, from what I
gathered, Jack Webb liked Babe Ruth and that of course was Ruth's home run

To the best of my knowledge his badge number was not used in the Dragnet
radio series. Hpwever, when the black and white tv shows were first
syndicated the show was titled "Badge 714". Some of these programs are
circulating among collectors.

Subject: Bing and Bowie

For the curious about Bing and Bowie's colaboration, it was indeed issued on
Vinyl in the late 70's or early
80's. At least I think that's when it came out. It was certainly after
Bing's death.
It's also been released on CD on at least one Christmas Comp.
The vinyl version has the Bing and Bowie monolog before the song itself. I
don't think the CD version has the
monolog though.
If you are interested write me offlist and I can get you a copy of the full
vinyl version.
It came out as a 12-inch single.

Subject: Benny's theme

We all know (I presume) that Jack Benny's theme song was "Love in Bloom."
But listening to several shows recently, I have concluded that there are
actually two theme songs. If you listen carefully, the music starts out
with one or two bars of George M. Cohan's "I'm A Yankee Doodle Dandy" and
then neatly segues into "Love in Bloom." Is this correct? Does anyone know
why this was done?

George Tirebiter mentioned that he didn't think that Bing and Bowie's duet of
"The Little Drummer Boy" was issued as a record. Boy was it ever! In 1982
1t came out as a regular single and a special 12-inch single with a
super-large label with a picture of the two of them as they appeared during
the program. It was a major collectors item because the program had been
taped on Sept 11, 1977, one month before Bing's death, and was shown only
after his death, of course.

Subject: Young [removed]

Tom Turbyfill of Ardmore, AL recently contacted the Metro Washington
OTR Club for help in determining the significance of some soap opera
promotional materials he had just acquired. It consisted of a
sponsor's 1938 letter to a fan of "Young Widder Jones" together with
a photo of the cast.

Few Digesters, 'cept Jim Cox of course, know that "Young Widder
Brown," which was on NBC from September 1938 to June 1956, actually
began on Mutual under a different title. In his book, THE GREAT RADIO
SOAP OPERAS (McFarland, 1999) Jim points out that "Young Widder
Jones" aired on Mutual from June 6 to September 23, 1938. When
Sterling Drugs acquired it and moved it to NBC, Frank and Anne
Hummert, the producers, did not want listeners thinking there might
be a family connection to "Lorenzo Jones" who occupied a neighboring
time slot and was sponsored by the same company. So Ellen Jones got
her name changed to Ellen Brown and thus began the nearly two decade
run of "Young Widder Brown."

The cast photo Turbyfill discovered contains approximately the same
cast as was featured in the NBC version, including Florence Freeman,
House Jameson, and kiddies Tommy Donnelly and Marilyn Erskine. The
sponsor. located in Wheeling WV, was a children's laxative with the
long name of "California Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna." In the
sponsor's letter, signed by Ellen (Young Widder) Jones, listeners
were reminded that she could not send out all these wonderful
photographs without the help of her sponsor. She encouraged listeners
to buy this laxative which "your druggist will have in the big family
sized bottles that only cost you a small sum."

Subject: Billie the Brownie

We're back again. This Christmas Eve, members of the Milwaukee Area Radio
Enthusiasts will again be doing a live recreation of a Billie the Brownie
script from 1949 on WTKM. Billie was a part of the Milwaukee's Christmas
tradition for 25 years, from 1931 until 1955.
This year we have a special treat. The lady who played Mrs. Santa on
the original shows, Maddy Coogan Pritchard, has agreed to recreate her
role, and on the 24th, will perform with us in a script that she originally
performed on November 14, 1949. She's a charming lady, and we've had great
fun getting ready for this year's performance.
Be sure to listen on December 24, between 9:45 [removed] and Noon, to Ron
Krause's show on WTKM radio ([removed] FM and 1540 AM, or on the internet at
[removed]). The show is a call-in program, so you'll be able to be a part
if you have recollections of Christmas past, or if you have any questions
for Maddy - she truly was a part of OTR in it's heyday.

Merry Christmas,
Mark Higgins
