Subject: re: Don McNeill's "Breakfast Club"

Regarding Don McNeill, Larry Jordan wrote:

His program ran 35
years, meaning Mr. McNeill had the longest tenure of any emcee of a
network entertainment program, surpassing Johnny Carson (29-1/2
years), and Bob Barker (34-1/2 years on "The Price Is Right").

Larry might want to amend that statement to "American network entertainment
program" -- assuming he allows that the BBC is a network. At least two BBC
panel game shows had emcees with longer running tenures. Humphrey Lyttleton
was chair of "I'm Sorry, I Haven't a Clue" from April 1972 until December
2007 (35 1/2 years). Humph was also host of the BBC's "Best of Jazz"
programme from 1968 - 2008. Meanwhile, Nicholas Parsons has been chair of
"Just a Minute" since December 1967 and running. (They are recording a new
season even as I type this, and had a gala celebration last year for their
40th anniversary.) There are probably other examples from across the pond,
but those ones come to mind first.

Subject: Earplay

I have recently heard of a Drama show from NPR that had a long run
called Earplay. Does anyone have any info on this show or know where I
could listen to some episodes. Any help is appreciated.

Earplay ran through the 1970s and 80s -- originally as plays of various
lengths. When I was a high school student, working at our ten-watt radio
station in Park Forest, Illinois, we received copies of the early shows,
unsolicited, and broadcast some of them. These early shows may be have been
distributed separately from NPR, but the later shows were definitely on NPR.

I remember that Earplay featured original dramas, and they tended to be on
the intellectual/literary side. To me it seemed that many of the writers had
little experience in radio, and no real concept about how to create a
physical space or movement with sound.

I remember three specific programs. One was Arthur Kobit's "Wings", told from
the point of view of a woman suffering a stroke --- the title refers in part
to her days as a stunt wingwalker on airplanes in the 1920s or 30s. This
program stood out for me because it worked as pure radio --- I could not
imagine that the subjective experiences of a stroke victim could be
dramatized easily with visuals. "Wings" later became a successful stage play,
and when I read the script, I was surprised to see that it had not changed
much in the transition.

Another Earplay program was done by the Firesign Theatre, who certainly know
how to work with the techniques of radio. It was a William Shakespeare parody
called "Anythynge You Want To" --- atleast that's the name used when released
as an album years later. The Firesign Theatre had parodied Shakespeare in an
earlier record album, but this was a mostly different work.

I don't remember the title or author of the third Earplay show in my memory,
but I remember it was funny, unlike most of the others. It was about a man
who's at a crisis point because his psychiatrist has died, and who finally
achieves closure by summoning him through a medium. During a seance, we hear
a ghostly voice giving a psychiatrist's cliche' promptings ---- "Go On", "Um
hmmm", "And how did that make you feel?".

I remember these three shows because they were not typical of the Earplay
series, which seemed rather dry to me. As for finding copies of the series, I
should note that at least the early seasons of the series were distributed to
stations on LP's, which gives them a better chance of preservation in the
wild, so to speak, than when they were transmitted by satellite for taping
(and later erasure) by stations.
