The college students of the 50s were so much broader educated than later
generations. I consider myself well educated but these students knew so much
classical stuff and poetry that I don't think my generation were exposed to.
I was born in 1951.

I think they were educated about different things. Our generation (I
was born in 1945) needed to know more science than they did, and our
education emphasized that, especially after Sputnik. We had to learn
French, Spanish, or Russian, rather than Latin, and we may have gotten
greater exposure to European and international government and politics,
since the US had become a world power. We were exposed to classical
stuff and poetry (or at least I was), but it didn't seem as important.
