Subject: RIP Irving Brecher

Regret to report I just received a call that Irving Brecher has left
us at 94. In addition to "The Life of Riley," which he created,
Brecher scripted such shows as "Gillette Community Sing" for Milton
Berle, "Jack Benny" (briefly) and MGM's "Good News of 1938." (He
talks about his radio work in some detail in my book, "The Laugh
Crafters.")

His memoir, "The Wicked Wit of the West," is now slated for January
publication. I had nothing to do with it, but I've read an advance
copy and it's hilarious. For info:

Back many years ago in the early 1940's I remember a program called
"Easy Money" the moral of show was there in no easy money. The program
had case history's of various ploys to cheat in business or dishonest
com artist to get easy money.
I don't remember if it was a network show or if it local in Chicago. It was
an evening program. I'm not sure if it was a 15 minute or a half hour.
My
father use to listen with me and pointed out there were good lessons.
Well as result no one has ever cheated out of money, because I never
had any.

Anyone know any about "Easy Money"?

Frank McGurn

If there's anyone out there who knows where I can find some more tapes
or CD's (not MP3) of "The Story of Dr. Kildare" with Lew Ayres and Lionel
Barrymore, please let me know off line. I started listening to them
recently,
and really liked the writing and the performances connected with the program.
It's just intense enough, but the occasional rantings of the Dr. Gillespie
character with his nurse, as well as the interaction with the hospital
administrator,
break up the intensity of the episodes.

I've also been looking for the program "The Lady in Blue". I'm not
sure
whether any can be found, but if there are some surviving episodes of it,
please let me know offline.

Now a question: Who was known as "Miss Pinkerton"? In "Private
Eyelashes"
by Jack French, two women's names are listed. One is Mary Vance, the other
is Hilda Adams. Which one was character on the OTR program? Maybe both
characters had this distinction, but in different versions of this program.

An OTR Fan,

Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Cliff Carpenter - Movie Star

I just saw the film Synedoce and while I can't recommend the picture in its
entirety, it was exciting to see radio actor Cliff Carpenter featured in a
cameo with a speaking line, working with Oscar winner Phillip Seymour
Hoffman.

In the credits, Cliff is referred to as "Old Man," which at 93 amounts to
type casting.

Why he didn't bring a clip to Friends of Old Time Radio this year to drum up
interest remains a mystery.

Roger, I really appreciate the information
you gave about radio serials. I would really
appreciate it if you could tell me where I
can get: Jungle Jim, Moon Over Africa, and
Flash Gordon.

Also, a question. I listened to Moon Over
Africa a couple of years ago, maybe more,
and my recollection is that this program was
something done recently, meaning not an
OTR show. Is my memory correct about that?

Again, thanks in advance for any help you
can give me with my questions.

Academically inclined OTR Digest suscribers may be
interested in getting hold of this old issue of the
American Quarterly [with] Elena Razlogova['s article]
True Crime Radio and Listener Disenchantment with
Network Broadcasting, 1935-1946

Very interesting article (and easy to read, unlike some academic stuff). It's
online at:

I imagine it'll be included in the author's book _ The Voice of the Listener:
Americans and the Radio Industry, 1920-1950_, which is scheduled to come out
this year or the next, according to her website:
