This Week's Classics & Curios Show:
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 145
"CHUCK-WAGON JAMBOREE" WITH KEN "FESTUS" CURTIS (CONTINUING)
Three more "Chuck-Wagon Jamboree" shows are featured on this episode:
"Wait for the Light to Shine," "Keep on the Sunny Side," and "Happy
Roving Cowboy," from 07-29,50, 03-25-50, and 07-08-50, respectively. You
may like to check out more on Ken Curtis and the "Jamboree" in our
archive episode for the week of 10-26-14.
Each "Jamboree" bill usually includes mountain and folk music, a musical
medley, a ballad, a fiddle breakdown, a barbershop quartette tune, a
popular song, a solo by Ken Curtis, and a hymn of praise. There are
brief pauses during each show to allow local stations to insert commercials.
On these three shows we'll hear songs like "Time Changes Everything,"
"The Sleepy Rio Grande," ""Beautiful Dreamer," "Mexicali Rose," "Keep on
the Sunny Side," "Happy Rovin' Cowboy," and "The Last Roundup." The
Novelty Aces do a novelty cowboy version of "Chattanooga Choo Choo," and
Ken performs two songs that are dear to my heart: "You Are My Sunshine"
and "Ridin' Down the Canyon."
The "Canyon" tune was composed by good old movie cowboy sidekick Smiley
Burnett, and "Sunshine" by Governor Jimmie Davis. My wife and I were
privileged to meet Jimmie and to hear him perform his "Sunshine" song at
a festival in Texas when he was in his 90's. Jimmie asked the crowd to
join in singing with him while his video camera recorded it all so he
could play it later when he might be confined to his bed at home in
Louisiana. And later on Jimmie took a severe fall and was indeed unable
to perform again.
Hymns of praise include "In the Garden," "Throw Out the Lifeline," and
"O, Worship the King." Such praise songs fulfill the exhortation of
Psalm 95:1: "O, come, let us sing for joy to the Lord. Let us shout
joyfully to the rock of our salvation."
There are several more "down home" songs so saddle up and join Ken to
"sing a song as we roll along to the Chuck-Wagon Jamboree."
