Subject: Big Band Remotes from Radio Yesteryear

Does anyone know what happened to the Big Band recordings and other popular music
holdings of Radio Yesteryear?

On that same note, does anyone know where I could find a good source of Big Band
remotes to purchase or study?

Thanks,

Michael Henry

Subject: Re: Ian the Impatient

The awesome Aussie just posted another nudge.

Ian Grieve (still waiting for Hal's book to be finished)

To Ian (and any other friends who care). There has been another slight
delay. All because I'm what is politely referred to as a computer
nincompoop! I screwed up the files when I tried to go back in and make some
major text additions and add more graphics. Our illustrious Digest master
once referred to Pagemaker, (the software I'm using), as "ragemaker". An apt
term for sure. Anyway, to supplement my lack of expertise in other than
simple word processing, I use a local "expert" to come in fix my "Pagemaker"
goofs. Unfortunately, she's out of town for two weeks. Drat!

I was hoping for a completion target date by the end of this month, and
hoped to have it printed by the end of June. So, Ian old buddy, don't hang
by your thumbs while waiting. Let's safely project getting a copy into your
hot little hands by the end of July, and take the pressure off me, [removed]! :)

Subject: Calvin, the Colonel, & Herman Munster

Jell-O Again!:

With all this talk re: "Calvin & the Colonel" & how it has remained
somewhat obscure here in the USA, I was reminded that the only "accessible"
piece of Calvinania today's t--------n viewers might encounter comes via the
still-popular "Munsters."
There was an episode that featured a German scientist creating a
doppelganger version of Herman Munster named "Johan." At one point, Johan
(also played by Fred Gwynne) is seen uproariosly laughing at the TV. What was
on the screen?: a "Calvin and the Colonel" cartoon. Not much of a surprise
considering that both shows were produced by Gosden & Correll's
proteges Connolly & Mosher [as was "Leave It to Beaver" which featured
Correll's son Richard in the recurring role of Richard, one of Beaver's
friends].
I couldn't tell you off-hand the title or the director of this
episode, but if it was directed by "Henry Aldrich" himself--Ezra Stone(who
directed several other episodes), the OTR connection would be further
compounded. I met Mr. Stone several years ago at FOTR/Newark & had him sign
my copy of Stephen Cox's book on "the Munsters."

It's noteworthy to point out that through endless reruns of certain
shows from the 1960s, many non-OTR initiates today have more of a connection
to OTR than they realise. Take, for example, "The Flintstones,"
a show whose four principle characters were voiced by OTR veterans. Let's not
even mention all the OTR references evoked in 1940s Warner Bros. cartoons,
which are still viable today. We'd be here all night.

My profoundest apologies: I'm way "off-subject."

Unless I have my dates mixed up, the Columbia Broadcasting System will
celebrate it's 75th birthday on September 18, 2002. Wonder how Viacom
(present owners) will butcher that one??!! (hey at least CBS Radio exists
in some tangible form)

I downloaded the OTR desktop theme that Richard
Carpenter recommended, but can't find anything at the
site he listed,
[removed] called "Golden
Area." That's where he said an OTR screensaver can be
found. Has anyone else been able to find it?

I heard an excerpt today from a Fred Allen show that is new
to me. Dated 1948 it was called Belmont on the Air.

Elizabeth or anyone else, can you provide some background
on this show?

Thought you all might like to [removed] announced today that they will be
reviving Dragnet in a new series by Dick Wolf (Law and Order
writer/producer) scheduled to hit TV in mid-season 2002-2003. They have not
decided if they are going to stick with the Joe Friday character or not
though.
