Subject: Vic Hardy and Jack Armstrong
Ken Piletic speaks of Vic Hardy on the Jack Armstrong shows, noting,
Vic repented, and turned into a hero in the series.
He formed the "Scientific Bureau of Investigation"
and after that the Jack Armstrong program became
known as "Armstrong of the SBI".
Am I the only one who remembers this?
Hopefully someone else remembers the
series and perhaps the "older kids" can fill
in some of the blanks for the rest of us.
As far as I know, there exists in circulation one episode of "Armstrong
of the SBI." As I recall, its title was "Clear the Tracks," where Jack
was on a train that was transporting a new jet aircraft engine. Jack
manages to set things right after the train becomes a runaway.
I do know that Vic Hardy started appearing in the Jack Armstrong series
by 1947, as that's when the Columbia movie serial on Jack Armstrong was
released, and Vic Hardy was in it.
It was in the late 1940s when some of the 15-minute serials on radio
started shifting to half-hour complete stories. Jack Armstrong did it,
as did Sky King, Tom Mix, and (sad so say) Captain Midnight. IMHO, none
of the half-hour adventures were as good as the serials, possibly
excepting Sky King.
