Subject: New I Love a Mystery Productions

There have been a good number of requests here on the OTR Digest
asking the status of the New I Love A Mystery productions. In response,
I provide the following.

By way of introduction my name is Tim Knofler. I am the President and
Owner of Audio Cinema Entertainment Inc. (ACE).

Some of you may have heard our "Adventures of Captain Hudson" audio
series ([removed].)

For the past couple of years we have been working with the executor of
the Carlton E. Morse Estate. In May of 2009 ACE entered into an
agreement with Carlton's Estate to create new audio productions of "I
Love a Mystery" from the original scripts. We were also given
permission to produce live re-creations from a couple of chapters of
Carlton's scripts. We received many kind comments about the
recreations that were done at the SPERDVAC convention in May '09 and
the REPS convention in June '09.

At present we are working on the second phase of the production
contract and hope to have it signed off soon. Our goal is to produce a
superior quality product for today's audience. We have already secured
agreements with top, well-recognized voice actors to participate in
the upcoming productions. We are currently exploring several
distribution opportunities for the series but have made no commitments
yet. Distribution may include, but is not limited to, downloads,
retail, as well as broadcasting selected chapters from the series.

We are aware "I Love a Mystery" fans want to know "who is in the show
and when will it be released?" Answers to these questions will be
provided at the earliest possible time. It must, of course, be after
all contract elements are completed. We have reserved
[removed]. The site is under construction and
will be the primary point for all information regarding the show.
I will make sure its launch is posted here on the OTR Digest.
Other updates will be made during
interviews with Frank Bresee & Walden Hughes on their Friday Night
Show on [removed] (dates to be announced).
We appreciate your patience and support of this much beloved Audio
Series. Please know, as much as we would like to get the show to
market as soon as possible, getting it done right, with the best
quality possible, is our first priority. In the meantime, we welcome
your comments and suggestions. More updates will follow.

I would like to thank all of you for your continued interested.

Subject: Superman phone booth

Mr. Ross reminded us that Superman seldom used phone booths to change
into his uniform, and said that he usually went into alleyways or onto
rooftops; sometimes used supply rooms; and sometimes doffed his
civvies in his office or apartment. Mr. Ross also asked why Supe took
off his glasses before changing, and how he was able to select empty
supply rooms or hallways.
I may be wrong, but this is my take on the situation:
He used his X-Ray Vision to scope out any possible empty spaces around
him to make sure nobody would see him change. If there was an
unoccupied alley, or closet, he could see into it through solid doors
or walls. Taking off his Clark Kent glasses just made sure there was
no dust, grime, or glare interfering with his x-ray vision.
In our post-9/11 world, though, it might be harder for him to find
those "safe" changing places, given the proliferation of public and
private and corporate security cameras everywhere you [removed] maybe
not even on rooftops, viewable from roaming TV News and Police
helicopters.
Even in his apartment or a private office, he'd have to make sure that
all computer webcams were turned off, else his "cover" might be blown
to anybody watching on the internet. Wanna bet that the video wouldn't
show up on YouTube "faster than a speeding bullet"?
Maybe he should ask Harry Potter to sell him the "invisibility cloak".

For those in the [removed] area, character actor Marvin Kaplan ("Meet
Millie") is appearing in Arthur Miller's "The Price" at Theatre West
through March 21--and he's wonderful in it (natch). Having often had
the pleasure of seeing Marvin perform in CART productions and steal
the show--including a play I wrote--I can only say, don't miss THIS
opportunity. His comic gem of a performance is a master class in
acting. Call (323) 851-7977 for info.

Subject: Off Speed Recordings

Hi Gang,

I recorded my first radio program off the air in 1948 using an Eicor Tape
Recorder (almost everybody else was using Wire Recorders for home recordings
at that time). When I played the tapes back everything sounded okay, but
of course I was playing the tapes back on the same machine on which they
were recorded.

It was not until 1951 or so that I had the opportunity to play these tapes
on a different machine, a DuKane machine. There was a huge difference in
the pitch (speed) between the two machines. It was then that I discovered
that the old Eicor was running much slower than 7-1/2 inches per second.
It was still unknown whether the DuKane was operating at 7-1/2 either.
Recording and playing on different machines for the next several years
presented
many incorrect speed recordings.

Fast forward fourteen years. When I made copies of these old programs to
share with other collectors in 1965, the only method I had to correct the
speed was to physically wrap several layers of "splicing tape" around the
capstan of the slower machine to make the tape move faster.

Some of these old recordings are still circulating. Fortunately we now
have many ways of correcting the speed. Also, better recordings of many of
these same shows have been discovered. Still, it's nice to hear an old
off-the-air recording of "The Voice of Firestone" complete with static
crashes.

As an aside, I was able to identify "The Walking Man" (Jack Benny) by
playing the tape backwards. No, I didn't enter the contest.

Happy Taping, Ken Piletic - Streamwood, Illinois and Alma, Arkansas

Subject: Re: Off-speed programs

Hello again --

Regarding the discussion of off-speed programs taped or retaped by amateurs
(those not directly involved in air checks or transcription disks), one way
to re-establish the actual speed of any broadcast with identifiable theme
music -- and thus the pacing and quality of the actors' voices -- is to know
the key of the original music. As a professional musician, I am often driven
nuts by theme music that is either slower, faster, higher, or lower than
what I know to be the actual case. For example, the theme song for Vic and
Sade, the chorus of "Chanson Bohemienne," is in D Major (melody begins on
F-sharp). On one of my PD programs the organist plays the theme in a key
closer to E Major, a whole step higher than the original -- and the fact of
this rise in pitch is confirmed by the length of the program, less than
fourteen minutes (and this is one of the programs with all the theme music
and commercials intact). Lowering the pitch to D Major with one of the audio
editing software programs available restores the (nearly) fifteen minute
running time of the original.

Of course, many shows used their own theme music -- Bernard Herrmann's music
for Suspense is one example -- but for those using music written originally
for other purposes, like the "Lone Ranger" (Rossini's William Tell Overture)
or the "Shadow" (Saint-Saens' Omphale's Spinning Wheel) it should be pretty
easy to check the speed of the taped programs in this way. Take a look at
