The memorable opening of the show had the creeking door wich also was the
opening of Inner Santum Mysteries. Was that idea stolen from ISM?
EG Marshall has passed away. Himan Brown created both ISM and CBSRMT
so the door was his own creation for both series.

Subject: E. G. Marshall
Allen Wilcox inquires of CBS RMT:
E. G. Marshall was the host for the longest time. Is he still with us?
MARSHALL, E. G. (born Everett Eugene Grunz). b. June 18, 1914, Owatonna,
Minn.; d. Aug. 24, 1998, Bedford, N. Y. Emcee. Series: The CBS Radio
Mystery Theater (host, 1974-1981).
E. G. Marshall presided over network radio's most ambitious
comeback when CBS instituted a series of live-on-tape mystery dramas seven
nights a week in 1974. Most chain radio offerings had been absent long
enough for its reappearance to intrigue, even enthrall, legions including
the many who were hearing web-based radio again. For eight years a
somber-voiced Marshall introduced the grim dramas of the macabre and
corralled a loyal following eager to hear the squeaking door slam shut
again; it was a prop that producer-director Himan Brown had borrowed from
Inner Sanctum Mysteries two decades earlier. The resurgence was exciting
and, for as long as it lasted, held a core segment of listeners at rapt
attention.
Marshall, an alumnus of the University of Minnesota, was an
inexhaustible stage, film and television actor. He performed in no fewer
than 92 films on TV and in cinema houses (1945-1998) while making 138 guest
appearances in televised dramatic series (1949-1995). His first continuing
role was in the CBS-TV courtroom drama The Defenders (1961-1965) in which he
played a defense attorney. He returned to recurring acting as a physician
in NBC's The Bold Ones (1969-1973).
The above graphs are excerpted from my forthcoming book "Radio Speakers" to
be released shortly by McFarland & Co. It covers a goodly number of the
actors who appeared on this legendary series, many of whom -- to answer
another of Allen's questions -- are still with us. There are nearly 1,200
performers referenced in the 350-page hardback.
This encyclopedic volume, incidentally, may be pre-ordered now for shipment
when it's off the press at 1-800-253-2187 or [removed]

Subject: Barrymore Christmas Carol
Hi Everybody,
thank to Elizabeth we have the run down of Barrymore Christmas Carol of the
1930s. Could any one come up with a list of the Barrymore Christmas Carol
starting in 1940 until his death? I believe that at least three of them do
survive. One is from Mayor of the Town. I do not have a date for it.
Another is from 1949, and another is part of a two hour Christmas variety
program that Gene Autrey and Bing Crosby hosted. Does any one know any
others? Take care,
Walden Hughes

I just finished watching the Simpsons Halloween special - LOVED the War Of
The Worlds spoof they did "The Day The Earth Was Stupid": many OTR jokes in
there, and also a superb Orson Welles impersonation by that guy who did "The
Brain" on Pinky and the [removed] very funny ROSEBUD pun slipped in, too!
Urgh! If I had a Brain in my head, I'd have hit "record". I think that an
audio-only version of this would play just about as well as the television
[removed] anyone out there happen to record it?
Also, how many of us OTR fans who watch the Simpsons noticed that Halloween
ending years ago, where they opened a door, and THE DARK sort [removed]
[removed] then TURNED THEM INSIDE OUT (then they did a song and dance
routine)? Of course, a reference to the famous "Lights Out" show "The Dark",
SERIOUSLY wasted on the general public, but just another example of the
layers of humor in the Simpsons. I'm sure that there has been tons of OTR
stuff in the Halloween [removed]
Now, seriously, if anyone recorded "The Day The Earth Was Stupid" tonight,
could you maybe post the audio?
Thanks Homer!

Elizabeth,
In your rundowns on Lionel Barrymore's Christmas Carol presentations you
may wish to include Mr. Barrymore's Chistmas Carol perfomances on his "Mayor
of the Town" show. It usually was performed on the show's time slot just
prior to Christmas Day. Agnes Moorehead, who played "Marilly," the Mayor's
housekeeper, usually took the role of Mrs Bob Cratchet and I was the boy
Scrooge sent out to get the Christmas Goose for the Cratchet's Christmas
Dinner. During every year I did my "Butch" character on the show Mr.
Barrymore always reprised his Scrooge role in just one-half hour.

Subject: "The Simpsons" WOTW
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I'm sure many folks'll weigh in on the "War of the Worlds" parody segment
which aired as a segment on "The Simpsons" annual post-Halloween "Treehouse of
Horrors XVII" last night (5th) on FOX. After many years as an iconoclastic
cultural touchstone, "The Simpsons" has finally done an all-out parody of OTR
after many a passing reference to it. It was a sheer stroke of casting genius
for the powers-that-be to engage cartoon voiceman Maurice LaMarche to perform
the voice of Orson Welles (LaMarche had provided the voice for OW in the Tim
Burtonfilm "Ed Wood' and called upon it when he voiced the Welles-like "Brain"
in the cartoon series "Pinky and the Brain").
However, I myself am going to invoke the recent "You know you're an OTR fan
when,,," thread by filling in "...you take latter-day OTR parodies to task
for 'not getting it right.'" At one point, "Welles' makes reference to his
WOTW being something to give the listening public while they're waiting for
"Amos 'n' Andy." Notwithstanding the fact that "Mercury" and "AnA" were on
different networks, "Mercury"/WOTW was on a Sunday, and AnA was broadcast
during the week.
Also, one of my favourite characters Chief Wiggum exclaimed words to the
effect of "In the name of the Great Gildersleeve!" Gildy was probably a
character on "Fibber McGee and Mo;;y" by October 1938, but I don't remember
ever hearing him referred to as "Great" until he got his own spin-off in the
early 1940s.
In spite of some allegory about the current global situation which might not
sit well with everybody, The Simpsons did manage to give us a quite enjoyable
WOTW [removed] a great gag about a sounds-effects man who told the
Welles character off.
We take you now [removed]

Subject: Getting incorrect information about
"Challenge Of The Yukon."
First, the information about the theme music being the overture to Donna
Diana is correct.
I'm relating this incident that happened to me back when I was listening
to the program on the radio.
I really loved the theme music, so I wrote a letter to the program
asking them what the title and composer of the music was.
A short time later, I received a reply from Trendle - Campbell
Enterprises thanking me for my inquiry, and stating that the theme music
for "Challenge Of The Yukon" was "Specially Written" for the program!!
This, of course, was entirely incorrect. I grew up in Gary, Indiana,
and listened to the program from Chicago. Anyway, the Music Librarian
at the Gary Public Library set me straight on the correct title and
composer of the music.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had any similar experience? By this I
mean writing to get information about a program, receiving a reply, and
then finding out that the received information was not correct?
Bob Coppedge.
