Redundant)
Ditto to Charlie's remarks about how wonderful Arthur
Anderson and his wife are. (I regret that I forgot
her name, but I never called her by her first name,
anyway.) I had first met Arthur at SPERDVAC a few
years back and had a great conversation with him and
others at the coffee shop. He is so forthcoming on
any information that he can share. I have been to
FOTR only twice (2005 and 2007), and both times not
only did Arthur remember me, but he and his wife are
just so friendly and so willing to participate in
activities which make for better conventions. We are
so fortunate in this hobby to still have both of them,
and I hope, for many years to come.

Subject: Don MacLaughlin
Perhaps someone who is versed on early TV and late OTR
can help me in this dilemma: I just read that the
last year of "Road Of Life" was 1959, and I know that
"As the World Turns" debuted on TV in 1956. Was Don
MacLaughlin on radio during the first three years of
"As the World Turns", while he was doing TV? During
that "overlap" period, was it common practice for
radio actors---I don't mean stars, like Milty and
Benny---to cross over and do some TV?
Thanks! I know I can always get answers here on the
Digest. Happy New Year to all of you!

Subject: Benny birthplace
Ron Sayles sez:
Why do so many references say that Jack Benny was born in Waukegan
when he was actually born in Chicago? I just watched a Jack Benny
special on PBS and ever Tom Smothers said he was born in Waukegan.
NOT SO! He was born in Chicago.
True, and at Mercy Hospital in Chicago to be specific. I've heard a few
theories on why this was so. One is that Jack's mother supposedly felt it
was "an honor to be born in a big city" (understandable since the family
came from the shetls of Lithuania). Another is that Naomi (aka Emma, Jack's
mother) wanted to be nearer to her family. Another is that the more
advanced medical treatment of a big city hospital assured a higher chance of
survival for both mother and baby. In any event, Chicago air provided
Jack's first breaths (which may or may not have been a good [removed]
Upton Sinclair).
But the family did live in Waukegan at the time, and certainly Waukegan air
provided Jack's breaths very soon thereafter, likely even for Jack's
circumcision 8 days later which I'd wager Mayer would have wanted done in
his newly co-founded synagogue of Am Echod (although that's pure theory on
my part). I doubt that Jack absorbed a whole lot of culture during his
Chicago birth, but his Waukegan raising certainly made an impact. So
Chicago becomes a footnote.

Subject: The Affairs of Peter Salem revisited
Back in early November, the intrepid researcher and editor of the Metro
Washington Old Time Radio Club, Jack French, reported that a fifteen
minute episode of the Affairs of Peter Salem, a radio detective series
starring Santos Ortega from 1949 through 1953 was unearthed. Discovered
by radio producer and host of a classic radio show at WRVO-FM in upstate
New York, Mark Lavonier, the recording was a first half of an episode
called "The Affair of the Horrible Hitch" from December 14th, 1949.
Mark has generously shared that clip now with the old time radio
community via my web page on The Affairs of Peter Salem at
[removed]. Besides the original 5 minute episode
piece which I have had posted there since 2003, this new clip is
available for download in mp3 format. Mark also contributed information
on how he came across the clip.
This is one of the rare detective series that until 2003 had never been
heard since its original broadcast and now a total of 20 minutes have
been unearthed over the last few years.
