Subject: Arnold Stang as Top Cat

In reference to a recent post about Arnold Stang playing the part of Top
[removed]

His voice sticks in my mind, however, as that
of "Top Cat" in the 60's.

Yes, the one that sounded so smooth and urbane:
"Exit . . . stage right, ee-vun."

I don't want to be picky, but just want to set the record [removed]

Arnold did do the voice characterization for Top Cat, who was a cartoon
version of Sgt. Bilko. But the line "exit stage right." was not Top Cat's
line.

That line was used by another Hanna Barbera creation, Snagglepuss. A lion
that started on Quick Draw McGraw, but proved so popular he got his own
segment on the Yogi Bear Show.

"Exit stage left" and "Heavens to Murgatroid" were his lines in a voice that
was a characterization ( [removed] imitation) of Bert Lahr, the Cowardly
Lion.

Just want to set the record straight.

Subject: Top of the Hour Newscasts

bcockrum wrote:

Would the affiliates carry them? In Dallas-Fort Worth, the CBS
affiliate cuts off the hourly news after only a couple of minutes, not
five.

This drives me nuts. I'd like a 10 minute top of the hour news to listen to
while at work - 5 minutes network/ 5 minutes local. I can get the CBS houly
newscast on 2 stations. One carries the full 5 minutes, but for most of the
day follows it up with only a local weather forecast. The other station
cuts it off after the first 2 minutes and then does 2 minutes local news.
So you can't listen to both the full 5 minutes of network news and get any
local news.

Subject: underrated series

One of my favorites has always been the Magnificent Montague. it plays as
well for me now as it was when it was new.

if I had to pick the most underappreciated series I would point to the
series of operas broadcast from the Met, and to bell telephone hour. No
matter what direction popular music has taken in the last 50+ years these
featured classic talent at the peak of their career. For sheer quality of
performance these were arguably "the best of the best' IMHO anyway

Where is Jussi Bjorling now when snoop dog has taken over the airways.

Subject: Lum and Abner & Charles Lane on TCM

OTR favorites Lum and Abner can be seen this week on Turner Classic
Movies, starring in "SO THIS IS WASHINGTON" (1943). Thursday 2/17, 6
am PST; 9 am EST.

Our centennial birthday boy Charles Lane can be seen on TCM all the
time, of course, but is on view in one of his signature roles as a
no-nonsense investigator from the IRS in "YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH
YOU." Monday 2/21, 11 pm PST; 2/22, 2 am EST.

And yes, for those who asked, my book REEL CHARACTERS: GREAT MOVIE
CHARACTER ACTORS --which includes lengthy interview/profiles of Lane
and 11 other beloved supporting players -- is still available. Email
me off list for details if interested.

Subject: OTR in the classroom

I know from past digests that there are many teachers
here who have used old-time radio in some capacity in
their classrooms. I am putting together an article for
educators on the uses of OTR in the K-12 classroom
environment. If you would be willing to share your
experiences (both good and bad) using OTR in your
curriculum, please contact me off-list.
Thanks,
Ryan

Subject: NBC v. CBS broadcast history

One of the odd things about the predominance of CBS oriented histories of
broadcasting is that the NBC archives still exist--whereas the CBS
collection has gone missing. However, there is a theory that when the WMDs
are found, the CBS archives will be in the next room, the right across from
Judge Crater's room.

Subject: bob c and the problem of cbs

when cbs had its golden, silver, and even grey years it was an
independent network. now it is owned by others. the solution is for a
dreamer to buy cbs and what william s paley and frank stanton did. their
may be people like them (could be?) at cbs now, but their voices won*t
be heard until the revolution and cbs wins its freedom.

cbs is worth so little now, one beautiful dreamer might be it at
auction. i bet the current management has destroyed anything and
everything of value.

Subject: Re: Herman & Katnip

"Herman & Katnip" were Harveytoons, same studio as Casper the Ghost,
and boy were they *ever* violent. At least once a show, Katnip's tail
was stuck in a light socket or a wall outlet. His tag line was "I hate
meeses to pieces!"

The catchphrase that you speak of is being confused with the Hanna-Barbera
creation 'Pixie and Dixie'. The cat in those cartoons was named Mr. Jinx.

To continue, yes, they were extremely violent, and lacked the occasional
heart that Tom & Jerry had. They also lacked the creativity of the cat and
mouse that they openly mimicked. These cartoons were produced by the
Famous Studios over at Paramount (it wasn't until they were sold for TV
viewing around 1956 that they became Harveytoons) where it wasn't uncommon
to rehash the same plots over and over and over again, especially in the
1950's when any shred of creativity the studio had was gone by the wayside.
Other creations were Little Audrey who was always dreaming, Casper who was
always trying to find a friend, and Popeye who was largely trapped in
shoddy remakes of wonderful Fleischer shorts. The Herman cartoons
generally centered around some of his friends or cousins who were being
harrassed by Katnip. Herman would invariably show up for a visit and do
battle with Katnip for 6 minutes.

If it sounds like I'm being too harsh on the studio, it should be pointed
out that the animation was generally smooth and handsome (if a bit
workmanlike) and the cartoons were fairly popular among the kids (unlike
the Warner Bros and MGM cartoons that appealed to kids AND adults).

You can see Herman & Katnip cartoons today (and hear Arnold Stang) on
Boomerang every night at 10:30pm (EST) on the Casper & Friends show.
