Subject: WTD: Info/Recordings of Fielden Farrington
I have two famous OTR great uncles: Red Skelton and Fielden Farrington.
Fielden started out at WBOW in Terre Haute, IN where Burl Ives got his start.
He joined CBS in the 1930's and is best known, perhaps, for his announcing of
the "Romance of Helen Trent" and (reportedly) "The Green Hornet." My mother
thinks that perhaps he announced "Our Gal Sunday" for a time, but I have not
found proof of that.
Fielden was a productive writer for CBS radio and television, noteably "CBS
Radio Mystery Theatre" and "General Hospital." He authored several books -
two of which were made into made-for-television movies: "A Little Game" and
"Apartment 7A".
I understand, too, that Fielden did some WW2 news coverage that was recorded,
but I have not found any copies. If anybody has any audio of Fielden in
"Helen Trent", "The Green Hornet" or "Our Gal Sunday", as well, I'd
appreciate the opportunity to chat about procuring [removed]
I have Fielden's yearbooks, first editions, all his CBSRMT episodes, an
unpublished manuscript ("The Back House") and a lot of other info if anybody
is doing related research.
Thanks!

Subject: illicitly-recorded broadcasts
Ironically, several times later that month they
unknowingly aired recordings during "Empire's Homage" at the end of the
Coronation of King George VI, and several of Lowell Thomas' programs from
Europe. They were furious when they found out about Thomas' programs, but
I have never found any evidence that either they nor CBS ever found out
about the coronation ceremony recordings.
I suppose I'm prejudiced by current technology, but wouldn't someone at the
network have been able to tell that these were recordings? I know that
tape recordings can't be detected by listeners--at least I can't--and that
good disk recordings were better than modern listeners have been led to
believe.
But I also read, probably in an article based on rumor-fed research and
urban legends, that Allied soldiers during WWII thought that German
tape-recorded broadcasts were live, because the conventional disk recordings
of the day couldn't sound that good.
Maybe the background noise inherent in short-wave broadcasts swamped out the
background noise inherent in disk recordings, so nobody could tell. But
still--these were experienced people. I'd be surprised if nobody noticed
the difference.

Laura, I don't remember the name of the motel, but it was one of the
first you hit when you enter the Waukegan city limits coming from the
south on the main highway, and it was on the right (east) side of the
highway. I stopped there to ask directions.

Subject: Hedda on "Lucy"
I recently said that I'd seen a gossip
columnist on one of the "I Love Lucy" episodes
where they were in California, where Ricky was
making a movie. The particular columnist I
was referring to was Hedda Hopper. I believe
her one line reply was "And they say I wear
crazy hats!" I've heard that she had an obsession
for collecting crazy hats. Sort of the Imelda
Marcos of her time, only with hats.
Is this true or just a rumor which has
been bandied about through the years and accepted
as truth? Did Hedda ever make an appearance on
any other OTR programs? Her wealth of knowledge
would have served her well on one of the quiz
programs. What newspapers carried the columns of
both Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons? Was their
reported feud really as vehement as was reported?
Another OTR fan,
Kenneth Clarke

Anthony Tollin's interesting comments on the history of the 'Shadow'
broadcasts has inspired me to note a recent 'Shadow' find. Dave Goldin
recently
acquired an October 20, 1933, recording of Fred Allen's 'Salad Bowl Review'
featuring an appearance by 'The Shadow'. Obviously this was at a time when
'The Shadow' functioned as narrator, not crime solver. Could this be the
mythic figure's earliest surviving broadcast appearance?

Sean Dougherty writes:
I believe it was a 1922 but I'm sure Laura and our
other scholars will confirm that the actual model year of the car was not
consistent throughout the series.
That's correct. For example, on the 10/8/39 show, it's indicated as a 1920
Maxwell. On 1/28/40, it's said to be a 1923 Maxwell. On 10/20/40, they call
it a 1921 Maxwell.
The one truly authentic Maxwell I've found that was used for multiple Benny
publicity shots is a 1922 model. Here's a photo of Jack and Roch with the
Maxwell I know: [removed]
However, I've also seen publicity photos with Jack riding in a Maxwell
2-seater that looks much more like a circa 1914 model.
Here's a page that has many excellent links to Maxwell photos:

regarding a character named Millicent Upington. I believe the character's

Hopefully, this will help with your search.
Abigail Uppington (forever known to Fibber as "Uppie") was the show's
resident matron character into the early days of the war; for whatever
reasons, by the end of the war, that character had been replaced by a nearly
identical one known as Millicent =Carstairs=, which might explain some of the
confusion.

When the last of the old time rado shows were cancelled (late 1950s), were any
of the shows put into "syndication", sort of like what they do with television
shows of today and then aired as reruns? I'm just curious, when the original
OTR shows stopped, how long did it take for these shows to be played over the
air again? If they were, what stations/shows were they? Or was it not until
much later (ie, 1970's) until these shows were broadcast again over various
stations that had an "odl time radio" show. I'm not referring to CBSRMT or
the like, but the original shows (ie: Suspense, Johnny Dollar, Jack Benny,

Subject: The Maxwell
So I did a Google search on Mr Benny's automobile. It was typical of most
pre-Ford autos: not so reliable, underpowered, and a general adventure to
deal with. It wasn't, however, a bad car. The Maxwell factory (Detroit and
Indiana) raced their cars with some success and set an early endurance
record across the US.
What happened was a common story: the company got a pile of government
contracts for World War I, couldn't expand quickly enough to fulfill them,
and went bust. The name and the factory were acquired by one Walter P
Chrysler, who continued to build the car under the Maxwell marque. By 1925
or so, the name was wearing thin, and while Chrysler continued manufacture
and made continual improvements on the Maxwell, the car's name was changed
to Plymouth.
The pictures in the 'related links' of this website are worth looking at:
the Maxwell wasn't a bad-looking vehicle:

the two NBC networks heard this recorded segment at two separate

minus WJZ plus WEAF got it at 4:30-4:45 PM Eastern. <snip> we can only
assume that they may have been coast-to-coast. It may not have been
simultaneous
As far as the 4:30 pm EASTERN TIME broadcast is concerned I would assume it
was a simultaneous coast to coast feed. At 4:30 NBC red network usually
broadcast a serial drama called 'Follow the Moon ' for 15 minutes and the
blue
network had the hour long "club Matinee'.
Both shows were heard on west coast stations at 12:30 pm during the month of
May 1937.
During this era the west coast did not observe daylight savings time so there
was a four hour time difference.
One would assume that if the network was pre-empting either one of the above
listed shows that the pre-empting feed would follow the same feed pattern .
Therefore, my bet would be that the west coast heard the recorded broadcast
at
12:30 pm.

He was, but only after about March 1955. The setting of the show moved to Doodyville in
June 1952. The following year, there was an election for mayor of Doodyville between
Bluster and Dilly Dally. Somehow, both candidates were disqualified, leaving Howdy the
default mayor in his capacity as President of the Kids. Howdy turned it over to Dilly Dally.
In March 1955, Dilly resigned as mayor. In the ensuing election, Bluster ran again against
Tizzy the Dinosaur. When Tizzy was going in to vote, she refused to give her age. It was
the law in Doodyville that if you didn't give your age, you couldn't vote and couldn't be mayor.
Tizzy was adamant, and Bluster was declared mayor.
