Subject: WLS National Barn Dance
Hello, I received notification of a new book being published this week
called "The Hayloft Gang: The Story of the National Barn Dance (Music in
American Life)" edited by Chad Berry. The book can be pre-ordered from
Amazon (you might be able to go through Charlie's web site to help him
out!) It describes itself as:
Drawing on the colorful commentary of performers and former listeners,
these essays analyze the National Barn Dance and its audience, trace the
history of barn dance radio, explore the paradox of country music in a
major urban center, investigate notions of authenticity in the
presentation of country music and entertainment, and delve into other
provocative issues raised by the barn dance phenomenon.
Contributors are Chad Berry, Michael T. Bertrand, Lisa Krissoff Boehm,
Don Cusic, Wayne W. Daniel, Loyal Jones, Kristine M. McCusker, Stephen
Parry, Susan Smulyan, Paul L. Tyler, and Michael Ann Williams.
Published by the University of Illinois Press. Cost will be $[removed]
If anyone gets a copy of the book or reads it, could you let the digest
(or me at least) how it is? I'd be curious about it.
Thanks,
Jim Widner

Subject: The Word Detective
I'm reading a book by Evan Morris, "The Word Detective," (Algonquin
Books, 2000) which promises to "solve the origin mysteries behind
those pesky words and phrases." It derives from an internet column
<[removed]> that Hunter publishes. He had taken over his
father's column (which was syndicated in newspapers for over 30
years, ending in 1990) which was entitled "Words, Wit, and Wisdom."
After taking over the column from his retired father, William Morris,
Evan changed its name to "The Word Detective," which he claims was
the name of a radio show his father had created years prior, based on
the column.
That radio series is a new one to me. The only clue I can find is in
Jay Hickerson's "Ultimate History" in which it lists "The Word
Detective" as a 2 minute syndicated show (no dates known) narrated by
Basil Rathbone. Eight episodes of this series are in trading currency
and floating around somewhere.
Since Rathbone died in 1967, obviously the program was recorded prior
to that year.
Any Digester have anything more to contribute on this subject?

While checking out Youtube yesterday I stumbled across a clip from the
Merv Griffith show. His guest was Don Wilson. What a great clip to
watch and view over and over again.

Subject: Tom Sawyer
Assuming Randy was asking for any radio broadcasts featuring the character of
Tom Sawyer (which includes "The Adventures of Huck Finn") and not just the
Tom Sawyer novel, the following feature Tom Sawyer.
The CBS Radio Mystery Theater, "Tom Sawyer, Detective" 1976
American Novels (two-part presentation) July 18 and 25, 1947
NBC University Theater 6/17/49 and 7/23/50
Good News of 1939 2/2/39
Request Performance 10/14/45
Favorite Story 8/13/46
The Campbell Playhouse 3/17/40 - I haven't heard this one in a LONG while so
I cannot recall if Tom is played by Jackie Cooper or Walter Tetley.
There is an episode of The Cavalcade of America that featured a biography of
Mark Twain. I haven't heard that in years but it's "possible" the character
(or the inspiration for the character) is portrayed in that episode.
According to Hickerson's Guide, all of the above exist in recorded form.
The one listed below is not known to exist in recorded form. I am playing the
bottom one from memory but I am fairly certain I am not making an error here.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938 five-part, one-week mini series scripted
by Arch Oboler, to promote the Selznick movie of the same name)

Subject: NY Old-Time Radio Club offer
While I strongly urge everyone to become a member of all the old-time radio
clubs across the country such as the Metro Washington OTR Club, RHAC and
Sperdvac to name a few, the New York Old-Time Radio Club just made something
available that any serious OTR fan would be crazy not to take them up on.
Offered ONLY to club members (not outsiders) is a compact disc containing in
pdf (Acrobat format) all the old MEMORIES MAGAZINES and THE ILLUSTRATED
PRESS, their monthly newsletter. A committee headed by Bob McDivitt, has been
working on a project to scan all of the Club's previous publications and
offer them on disc. Prepaid cost to members only is $10. Bob McDivitt's
mailing address is 109 Poinciana Pkwy., Cheektowaga, NY 14225.
If you are not the member of the club, don't sweat. Here's the good news. You
can join the club, become a member, and order the disc. Club membership is
$18 per year from January 1 to December 31. Members receive a tape library
listing, reference library listing and the monthly newsletter. If you join
during the months of April to June, the cost is $14 for membership till the
end of the year, when you have to then pay the yearly fee like all the
members do.
In my opinion, the hobby of old-time radio is broken up into four factors.
The recordings, the books, the conventions and the clubs. If the clubs fold
because of lack of memberships, that means a part of the hobby fades away. So
if you have been meaning to join any of the old-time radio clubs, I suggest
you do so and help support the hobby. They are all worth being a member, and
the newsletters are great because they feature lots of informative articles,
book reviews, news of the past month or two, etc. But a disc containing all
of the past issues of THE ILLUSTRATED PRESS (and the lastest issue is #361) .
. . I think it's a wonderful incentive to send in a membership fee. Don't
delay.
