Subject: Saving on royalties?

Jim Cox has just posted about the frugality of the Hummerts' in using
theme songs which were in public domain. While the classics and the
folk tunes they used were in public domain at the time, not all of
their themes were, including the one Jim mentions for Mr. Keen,
"Someday I'll Find You."

This song was composed by Noel Coward for his 1930 play, "Private
Lives," and was certainly still under copyright when Mr. Keen took to
the network in 1937. However the Hummerts probably felt safe
stealing Coward's song since [removed] and European copyright law at that
time provided protection only in the country of the originator. So
[removed] radio stations and producers felt no guilt or fear in theft of
music from Europeans. WXYZ was notorious in this regard.

Subject: Those elusive OTR books

Frank McGurn in downtown McHenry, IL laments on the Digest that he
cannot read the newer OTR books because they are too expensive for
him to purchase and he can't find them in his local library. He
further inquires why his library doesn't have copies.

There are a couple of solutions to his problem. As to why his local
library doesn't acquire these OTR reference books, I will leave a
more detailed answer to regular Digester (and professional librarian)
Melanie Aultman who can explain how to exert pressure on local
libraries for specific purchases. (And we authors would appreciate
that also.)

As for most OTR books, including mine "Private Eyelashes: Radio's
Lady Detectives," they can be accessed through the Inter-Library
System in which virtually all libraries participate. I would suggest
Frank check with his local library on this method of him reading
books held by other libraries anywhere in the US.

Secondly, most OTR clubs have large libraries specializing in these
types of books which are accessible to their members for a very
modest rental. My own local club, Metro Washington OTR Club, has over
300 volumes, magazines and scripts which can be rented for two bucks
for a month. Membership for MWOTRC is less than $20 bucks a year for
most folks in the hitherland so assuming Frank is a fast reader, he
could peruse 24 books a year through his membership. Details at our
website.

Finally, as has been pointed out in a recent Digest posting, the
shelf life on these OTR books is not lengthy so many end up in the
"remainder bin" of internet book companies, including Edward R.
Hamilton firm in CT. It currently has several Bear Manor Media titles
(including books by Martin Grams, Jr. and yours truly) for bargain
basement prices that Frank can easily afford.

Was Fred Foy related to the famous performer Eddie Foy or was this
just a coincidence that the last names were similar?

On 3/27/2009 Frank McGurn wrote:
I read the OTR Digest about books written by many of the experts who
contribute their knowledge to digest and refer to books they have had
published. I would love to read these books, but the library in my area
don't have any of the titles I read about.

Most of those books are available on loan from other libraries, even
those not within your library's local inter-library loan area. I
frequently get books from our small library that they find and order
from university libraries around the country. In the past three weeks
I have received two McFarland published books on Andy Griffith and
Mayberry RFD and am currently reading an obscure technical book on
WW-2 radar history, all came from college libraries. You just have to
ask for them to try finding a book outside their normal lending system.

Frank McGurn lamented that he cannot find OTR books at his library. I suggest
he create a list of four or five titles and authors that he would like and
hand it to one of the librarians. He should write his name clearly. And make
sure you have a current library card. The libraries take these suggestions
seriously and I bet that at least some of the selections will be ordered and
added to the libraries collection. Follow up with another list in a few
months.

Also, most libraries belong to an organization of lending libraries and you
can use your library card to search the computer for books you desire that are
available at the organizations member libraries.

I work at my local library(Peru Public Library, Peru,IL) and frequently see
such requests.

Good Luck,

Ron Reeland

Does anyone know if there are any broadcasts of Doris Day and Bing Crosby
singing together. As she spent some time as the girl singer on the Bob Hope
show and he was a frequent guest, I would think at some point they sang
together although I am unable to find any record of this.
