Subject: NBC clock chimes

I have a copy of an NBC memo stating that special equipment was
installed for the clock on the International Building overlooking
Rockefeller Plaza to sound the NBC chimes. The chimes commenced
operation on August 15, 1938. The chimes were also inaugurated on
the Gillette Razor clock at 47th and Broadway on April 27, 1940,
and on July 1, 1940, on top of the Merchandise Mart in Chicago,
also on August 15, 1940 the chimes were installed on a temporary
basis in the main waiting room of Grand Central Station.

Just curious if there is anyone on the list who remembers hearing
these NBC clock chimes. Bill Murtough maybe?

Wishing everyone a Happy and Peaceful New Year!!

Bill Harris

Subject: TV From Yesterday

I received an unusual gift from my daughter for
Christmas. She found a set of DVD's at Suncoast Inc.
done by our old 'friends' at MediaBay which I am
enjoying anyway. The collection is called "TV from
Yesterday" and each DVD has 3 old radio programs and 3
of the same programs as they transitioned to
television. As you might guess some benefited but most
lost something in the transition. The Fibber McGee &
Molly, while it could have been acceptable had it been
original merely paled in comparison to the remarkable
radio cast. I enjoy the postings that tell of new finds
like the one a few weeks ago about the "Christmas
Carol" Lionel Barrymore CD even though I was not able
to find it so I though others might like to hear about
this new (?) product. Dave Palmer [removed]@[removed]

Subject: ANNOUNCERS/FOY/BECK,ETC.

Hello Mates, from the Uk! This is a most interesting Digest for the OTR fan.
And this is my first posting in answer to Mr. Tollins post on announcers.
How can you mention the great annoub=ncers from "The Detroit Gang" without
mentioning Jay Michaels. who announced/narrated the Challenge Of The Yukon,
and on one or two show, I believe actually played the lread role of Sgt. John
Preston, RCMP. His voice was very similar to Foys, and was sometimes mistaken
for Foy.
Til next Digest,

Cheerio,
GrayGhost

From Those Were The Days --

1923 - The very first radio broadcast of the Rose Bowl was beamed in Los
Angeles over KHJ.

1925 - Lucrezia Bori and John McCormack of the famous Metropolitan Opera
in New York City made their singing debuts on radio this day. The
broadcast over what was WEAF Radio (now WABC) encouraged others to sing
on radio.

1927 - The very first coast-to-coast network radio broadcast of the Rose
Bowl was made. Graham McNamee provided the play-by-play on NBC.

1930 - One of radio’s first comedy programs, The Cuckoo Hour, was heard
for the first time on the NBC Blue network, which later became ABC
Radio.

From a long time subscriber --

January 1, 1934 - Lights Out! The long running cult horror radio series
premeired over WENR in Chicago, written, produced and directed by Wyllis
Cooper.

January 1, 1934 - The Court of Human Relations premieres over NBC.

Subject: Andrew "H" Brown

I want to thank Elizabeth for setting me straight on Andrew H. Brown's middle
name. I have a pet project and that is matching all Old Time Radio characters
to the performers who played them. I get the information from various sources
and whenever I read anything about Old Time Radio I have a pencil and paper
handy in case I come up with a new name. The list is up to about 5,700 names.
I want it to be as accurate as possible and with Elizabeth's knowledge I will
change Andrew H. Brown's middle name from Halt to H. Thanks again Elizabeth.

  Ooops, missed one --

>From a long time subscriber --

January 1, 1953 - Elliott and Cathy Lewis' popular radio anthology
series, On Stage, premieres over CBS. One of the best and most creative
radio programs to come along, perhaps since Columbia Workshop.
