Subject: Mysterious Badge

 wrote,

A friend showed me an old badge that I can't identify, but someone out
there in old-time radioland will surely recognize it.

The badge, from the description is a Radio Orphan Annie Secret Society
Secret Compartment Decoder Pin. A year or so previously, the Ovaltine
folk formed the Radio Orphan Annie Secret Society, and in the first
handbook, they had a "secret code" (a simple-substitution cipher) where
every letter of the alphabet was valued at twice its positional value
([removed], A=2, B=4, C=6, ... Y=50, Z=52, and &=54.). The next year started
the Decoder Pin premiums.
Someone at Ovaltine was take with amateur cryptography, and the "decoder
pins" in the /Little Orphan Annie/ serial were carried on as the
Code-O-Graphs in the /Captain Midnight? serial.

Subject: An Ivan Cury story

Here's a great story from Ivan Cury, who was one of the guests at this past
weekend's Cincinnati Nostalgia Convention (and incidentally one of the nicest
people around).

Ivan played Bobby Benson as a child (on The B-Bar-B Rangers). He told me he
knew at age 4 what he wanted to be - an actor.

And he started acting professionally on the air at age 10. (And he wasn't
pushed by his parents, by the way - in fact, they weren't so excited about
the whole thing.)

Anyway, Ivan said, "People tell me they feel sorry for me because I missed my
childhood.

And I say, "Missed my childhood? Hey! I knew the SHADOW!"

Just a reminder,

Stan Freberg and Bob and Don Hastings are among the guests at the REPS
SHOWCASE Old Time Radio Convention June 21-23rd.
That's just a little over two weeks away.

The weather has been beautiful in Seattle so we hope you consider making the
trip.

You'll have a great time!

We have posted online, interviews with most of the guests who will be
appearing. Enjoy listening.

The enclosed link is for a fund raiser to help preserve thousands of
scripts sitting in a private collection, private collector hands. Among the
scripts already saved are the 1933 radio serial for KING KONG (of which a
magazine article will be written documenting this later in the year) and a
complete run of FRED ALLEN's radio scripts from his personal collection of
bound volumes. If anyone is interested, please take a minute and check it
out.
Thanks!

	Martin
