Folks;
Just a quick reminder that the book sale, generously sponsored by Martin
Grams, Jr. to benefit the OTR Digest/Nostalgia Pages server fund, will be
ending soon. So if you haven't yet checked out the books Martin has chosen
for this sale, take a quick click over to:
[removed]
...these books will not only give you reading enjoyment and reference
works to consult again and again, but will also financially support the OTR
Digest and The Nostalgia Pages at the same time, as Martin is sending part of
every book sold to the server support fund! And this sale includes Martin's
newest book, "Invitation to Learning," which has just been released!
Make sure when you order, either via PayPal, or BillPoint, or surface
mail with your check or money order, you mention the OTR Digest Book Sale. And
much thanks, Martin, for the generous support!

Just curious. In the 30s and 40s, did other countries produce radio shows as
well and did they have any characters that captured the public's imagination
there like they did here - Jack Benny, Amos 'n Andy, Lone Ranger?

Lee Munsick comments on the shameless exploitation of WOTW by the
newspapers of 1938 and [removed]
Back in 1937 it was unusual. Today it is the norm of how one is to conduct
one's "journalism"
I wouldn't give the 1930's press anywhere near so much credit. Having
spent much of my adult life squinting at 1930s microfilm, as well as
inhaling unhealthy levels of newsprint dust from bound volumes of all
sorts of papers, large and small, I would contend that the overall
standard of newspaper journalism in the 1930s was *extremely* low. One
need only examine press coverage of such events of the era as the 1932
Bonus March or the whole debacle of the Lindbergh kidnapping case from
1932-35 to see how low the press could sink, and how lack of facts never
stood in the way of a good story. (Coverage of the Lindbergh case may in
fact stand as the lowest, sleaziest point in the history of American
journalism.) In this light, the hysterical WOTW coverage seems more
*typical* of 1930s journalism than any sort of aberration.
Hearst papers were especially shoddy -- most Hearst papers of the 1930s
were a mixture of strident red-baiting politics, celebrity gossip, and
crime-and-sex-related "news" that should have been distributed wound on a
paper core with perforations instead of pages --- but there were others
that were equally bad, such as the Patterson-McCormick papers. (New York
Daily News, Chicago Tribune. Not coincidentally, it was the Daily News
that published perhaps the most hysterical coverage of WOTW -- you'll see
a reproduction of its front page and excerpts from its stories on the
cover of the Manheim Fox LP edition of the 1970s.)
If you want to elevate modern journalism to new heights of excellence,
compare the worst modern newspaper you can find with any issue of the
"New York Daily Graphic," the MacFadden tabloid of the 1920s-early 1930s,
possibly the single worst daily newspaper ever published in the United
States. (And that's quite an accomplishment considering the
[removed]) And as the example of WOTW shows, even "respectable"
papers like the New York Times and New York Herald Tribune were not
immune to exaggerated scare headlines, sloppy research, and half-baked
half-truths.

Ronald Staley <mrvintageradio@[removed]; asked:
Does anyone have an mp3 or cassette of the golden palamino children's
story. Or, does anyone have the original bobby benson story about same?
Since I heard that story many times, I'm pretty sure I must have heard it on
_Big Jon and Sparky_, which means it was released as a children's record.
After half a century I still recall from that story that the palomino's name
was Amigo, and that Bobby Benson sang a song with the horse's name in it. In
fact, I still remember the grace notes in the "mi" syllable. Memory's a funny
thing, assuming it's not all something I imagined. BTW, the actor that played
Bobby Benson (assuming the same kid played the part both on radio and record)
was at the one and only OTR convention I have been able to attend, in
Cincinnati; I gather he frequently attends conventons.

Am I the only one who can't seem to find 60 minute cassette tapes
at any department stores suddenly?
Not suddenly. Been that way around here (NYC area) for a couple
years now. Check you local drug stores. My local CVS Drug Store
carries C-60 Memorex, TDK, and others. I also noticed Stapes had
C-60's on the shelf. Best bet is buy from the Internet. I just
recently took the suggestion of someone here on the Digest and
got a case of 100 Sony C-60's for less than fifty cents each.

I'm sure there are many OTR fans who were saddened to hear of Lawrence
Dobkin's death. I was dismayed that the AP obituary that appeared in our
paper never even alluded to Dobkin's radio work. Yes, he had a long and
prestigious list of TV and movie roles, but dozens and dozens of radio
appearances are apparently not important to the AP--or maybe they're not
aware of radio before DJ's and programmed music!
I'm preaching to the choir, of course. Just wondering if any of you read an
obituary that recognized Dobkin's contribution to radio.

Subject: Re: I can't believe it?
To all you kind folks on the Digest who have been asking how to get a copy
of my new [removed] day of atonement has arrived. The Web page with all the
facts and ordering information was finally completed a few hours ago. Simply
log on to the net at this address.
[removed]
To all those who have sent me private e-Mails asking about the book, I will
send you the web address separately, in case you miss this announcement.
To My Awesome Aussie Buddy,(Ian)... e-mail me privately and we'll try and
work out costs of shipping, etc, so you can use PayPal as you requested.
Check out the site and then we'll talk.
Same hold true for Joy at REPS. Check out the volume discount offer. OK?
Just so everyone understands. I held a gun to the printers heads and made
them promise to at least ship me some books so I could make copies available
at the two recent conventions, as well as fulfill the orders from way back
in June when we first announced the book at the REPS convention in Seattle.
Consequently, any reviews about the book that have been posted here in the
digest are the result of having sold some advance copies at the convention,
and from the folks who finally got theirs after waiting patiently since last
June.
I have yet to fill any orders from fellow digesters because I needed the
web-site up and running to be able to furnish you all with the ordering
information. Thanks for your patience.
Now, to other matters. Dorothy and I had a great time at SPERDVAC this past
weekend. We arrived home last night. It was fun seeing the same fans who
attended the NY-NJ Convention and the LA one as well. Now, you have to
admit. These are die-hard OTR fans. And I got to meet fellow digesters at
this one as well. The LA convention organizers didn't work me as hard as the
East Coast guys. (After all, we have to give the West Coast actors a chance
to strut their stuff also). :)
By the way, the review of my book that "Tooth" [removed] posted blew me away.
Honest, no money crossed hands. (I think he's hinting around at becoming my
press agent). :) If anyone ordering the book enjoys it half as much as he
seemed to, then I will feel the task of writing it will be worthwhile. Not
to mention making a buck or two if people buy it based on his
recommendation. Do you suppose he's looking for a commission? :)
One final note. Those of you who may eventually order the book, please let
me know how you liked it. That input may help me decide if it would make
sense to undertake a sequel. :)

Yes, Patrick, that is the recording described at
[removed].
It was later re-released as side one of an LP,
which I am looking at right now,
with "The Adventures of Oliver Twist and Fagin"
(with Rathbone as Fagin) on side two.
Here is the cast, from the liner notes:
Sinbad . . . . . . . . . . Basil Rathbone
Scheherazade. . . . . Peggy Sanford
Mustapah. . . . . . . . Mason Adams
Hindbad. . . . . . . . . Guy Repp
Captain . . . . . . . . . Jack Hartley
King . . . . . . . . . . . Ted DeCorsia
Sinbad's Friend . . . Maurice Gossfield
Giant. . . . . . . . . . . Jack Hartley
While there seem to be several voices, I really feel Rathbone is in here.
His was one voice that was hard to miss.
