Subject: DRAMA HOUR returns!
Two KSURFAM radio stations in Los Angeles have begun broadcasting the OTR
'Drama Hour', recently abandoned by (conglomerate-owned) KNX. The stations'
signals are relatively weak, so most of us can't hear the real-time
broadcasts. However, some of the programs are available for listening on
the Web the next day at this site:

As I write this I am listening to "The Saint" starring Vincent Price; an
episode of "Inner Sanctum" will follow.
I am happy.

Subject: OTR Vender question
To All:
I am relatively new to the world of OTR, and especially to the OTR Digest.
I grew up in the waning days of radio, but very early on came under the
influence of the evil glowing eye in the living room. It is only now in my
more "mature" years I have come to appreciate and to collect OTR programs,
and one program in particular. I am now working on gathering together a
complete collection of my favorite program, "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar".
It is my quest which is the cause of this inquiry.
Back in late June of 2003, I corresponded with a well-known vendor, and
requested 28 YTJD programs which I can find listed nowhere else. The charge
was higher than most sites, but I was told the quality was worth it, and I
am more than willing to pay the asking price. The vendor, who shall remain
anonymous for the moment, promised a 4 to 6 week turn-around time, which
should have given me the requested materials in late August. Now, in
February of 2004, the vendor will not acknowledge e-mails, has not responded
to a registered certified letter asking for a status of the order, and
basically is most unresponsive to my inquiries. He never even acknowledged
a request from me to buy additional programs.
So my question to the list is this. How do I go about getting a
recalcitrant vendor to "stand and deliver"? I can think of a number of
painful and draconian measures, but that is not the way I would like to deal
with this situation because it does not work. I am sure that others may
have been in a similar situation, so I am eliciting any advice you might
offer.
I have dealt with several OTR vendors, and have gotten nothing but stellar
cooperation. I would like this problem to resolve itself likewise.
Thanks in advice for your advice. Or as my alter-ego would have said,
"Yours Truly",
John Abbott

The White Network was one of the NBC west coast networks and operated
in the late 1920's and early 1930's and went away when NBC went
coast-to-coast. It was also called the Watchtower Network and the
program content was mainly religious. There were also Gold and Orange
west coast networks.
There were actually two "White" networks -- the Watchtower network was
the first, administered by the Watchtower Bible And Tract Society, aka
the People's Pulpit Association of New York (this is the corporation that
administers the Jehovah's Witnesses religious group.) The key station was
WBBR, Brooklyn/Rossville NY, and it operated only once a week, on Sunday
mornings, for an hour-long program of religious music and Bible lectures
by the sect's president J. F. Rutherford.
This White network didn't have anything to do with NBC that I'm aware of
-- the Watchtower organization had used NBC for one program in 1927, and
ended up banned from any further use of the company's facilities after
Rutherford used his hour to denounce in rather fiery terms all organized
religion, political entitites, and Big Business as agents of Satan. This
broadcast was not especially well received by NBC executives, who set up
their "no paid religious programming" policy as a direct response to the
controversy it caused.
The "white" name came from the same source as NBC's use of colors, though
-- it was the color on which AT&T engineers traced the routes on Long
Lines maps. This Watchtower-White network operated from 1928 to 1930,
after which the Watchtower organization switched to the use of
transcriptions for its weekly programs.
The second "White" network was NBC's International Division -- the
network of stateside shortwave outlets that broadcast specially-produced
programming to international audiences beginning in the mid-1930s. Most
of its programming prior to the war was directed to Latin America, and
was in Spanish.

Subject: William Tell Theme
A question was posed as to whether George Trendle may have chosen the Finale
from Rossini's Overture to William Tell as the Lone Ranger introductory
theme as a result of seeing "The Devil Horse", a movie that apparently
pre-dated the radio program by a year or so. I personally have not read
anything in any contemporary accounts of how the theme was chosen to support
this. The overture was then and still is a staple of bands and orchestras
the world around. Several accounts of what took place in planning meetings
during the weeks before the Ranger was first broadcast indicate that Von
Suppe's Light Cavalry Overture was also a contender. Both pieces use a
tempo suggestive of hoofbeats, but the Rossini work is far superior, and
this was the conclusion of the WXYZ staff and Jim Jewell, who was to direct
the program, as well.

Dear Mike,
You're right. The name of the episode was "Death From The
Deep". It dealt with some prisoners who escaped on the condition
that they build a submarine for the person who help them to escape.
Needless to say, the Shadow discovered the plot and brought an
end to the plot. It was quite good. The date of the episode was
10/07/1937 (at least that's the date on my tape).
As always,

Not only the Okeh, which was sent to me, but Jim Backus "Delicious" from

Now that we've determined that Harpo Marx could really speak (and

Is there a recording anywhere of Chico Marx without the Italian accent?
Might he have spoken in standard American on a broadcast during the

Julie did not edit Superman during WW2. From 1944 until 1948, Julie was
editing for the All-American branch of DC Comics, which did not include
Superman. The two branches of DC weren't even in the same building until
1948.
I was going by Sam Moskowitz's biography of Mort Weisinger in his book "Seekers of
Tomorrow." I've since consulted a three-part article about Julie Schwartz in "Comic Book
Marketplace" in 1997, which says that Jack Schiff edited Superman during WWII. While the
Moskowitz article was written about 30 years closer to the events, Moskowitz has been
known to get things wrong.
