Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Nostalgia / OTR Convention
Just a reminder that one week from now is the first-annual Mid-Atlantic
Nostalgia Convention in Aberdeen, Maryland. Old-Time Radio events, panels
and presentations will be featured, OTR-themed movies playing in the movie
room, and recreations such as Charlie's X-MINUS ONE drama with much of the
weekend guests playing the roles.
I haven't posted a ton of postings or beaten the subject to death cause i
figured anyone within driving distance of the convention will obviously have
already made their plans. In case someone very new to the Digest within the
last few weeks subscribed, the web-site is

If you have been contemplating coming and have not yet made your decision,
why not try as a one-day attendee? That way you can meet the actors, get
their autographs, watch some rare films, check out what the dealers have,
and learn something of value from a few of the panels and talks going on
almost all day? Saturday is going to be crowded a little so if you like
excitement, Saturday is the day for you. If you prefer breathing space, try
Friday.
Lastly, the dinner tickets is almost sold out. If you want to attend the
dinner on Sunday night, let me know now. I cannot guarentee that dinner
tickets will be available for sale during the weekend.

Subject: Mother Malone and Michael Shayne
In response to Devon's question about the identity of Young Dr. Malone's
mother, I believe that the actresses who played Mother Malone were Evelyn
Varden and Vera Allen. Not sure which one of them would have been playing
the character during the car accident story line.
Also, Graeme Stevenson asked when the Michael Shayne series aired. This
series was originally broadcast from 10/16/44 - 11/14/47, although I believe
that it had a later life as The New Adventures of Michael Shayne some time
after that.

All of this leads to my question. <snip>
But when did he become a god? He didn't
[ADMINISTRIVIA: Unless _directly_ related to the OTR Superman, please respond
to the poster directly. --cfs3]
As relates to the OTR Superman; He never really attained godlike status and often met radio
enemies who put his powers to the test, temporarily creating great suspense. Kryptonite
was first concieved for and appeared on radio (I'm pretty sure, Anthony T. might correct me
if I am in error) and was picked up by the comics.
One of the most famous radio Superman series was his encounter with a radioactive isotope
weilding "Atom Man". "Superman vs Atom Man" was so popular it spawned a movie starring Kirk Ayln
in the title role. The Radio Superman spent a good deal of that series lying weak and helpless.
I have a more extensive answer concerning areas beyond OTR that I will send Harry privately.
If anyone else is interested please contact me off-list.

Subject: Superman on History Detectives
I caught the PBS show referenced above yesterday morning. They had a
brief discussion about Superman's history and did reference the KKK
shows on radio from 1947. What they said briefly, was that a reporter
that had infiltrated the Klan shared info about secret words that added
some authenticity to the show.
I wouldn't necessarily vouch for the correctness of all the details on
HD, but I did enjoy the piece anyway.

Most of the articles carry a fee of some kind, but some don't, like this 1940
