A delightful lady she was too. I spent some time with her over the
years and send her my best if she's reading this.
Perhaps she recalls the time, shortly after the success of the Exorcist,
when she and I were seat mates on a flight from Los Angeles to New York.
We began to talk after both our books were put away and the flight had
settle into its usual boredom.
I asked her if that was her voice in the movie. At that time it was not
generally known.
Yes, she said, rather amazed that I had recognized her.
I told her I had a few copies of Inner Sanctum on tape and that I also
recognized her there too.
When she discovered I was an actor, she settled in for a long series of
anecdotes very common to actors sitting around the set waiting to be called
to a scene.
I recall some very nice recollections of working with James Dean in
Giant. We also discovered we had worked with a lot of the same people and by
dinner I was enchanted with her.
I was also delighted to hear how the voice for the "Demon" came about.
Whilst recording the dialogue with the director, Billy Friedkin, she
began having an asthma attack in the recording booth and was about to ask if
she could go home or at least take a break.
When Billy heard the wheezing, he knew that was the sound he wanted. He
asked her to stay and they worked through it.
We have all heard 'it'... and been chilled to the bone.
A great lady, a great soul.
My best to you my dear.

Subject: Aw . . . Relax Archie!
I recently finished an article reviewing Hal Stone's book AW . . . RELAX,
ARCHIE! RE-LAXX! for "Radio World." Let me add my voice to those who have
already praised Hal for writing such an entertaining account of his years as
a child actor in radio. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to
purchase your own copy. Not only will you be richly entertained, you will
help to encourage Hal and others to continue sharing their OTR experiences
through similar writings.
Let's face it folks, we are losing our remaining "links" to OTR at an
alarming rate. So let's encourage those who remain to continue to share
their insights with those of us who value OTR so much. Hal's book may be

Someone posted on the list previous to my response asking for questions to
ask of OTR performers at a convention. I intended to respond off-list, but
you know how that can happen. Those generic questions were intended to be
used to provoke a discussion amongst OTR performers, help them remember the

Subject: "The Chicken Heart"
Recently a poster inquired about "The Chicken Heart," written and
produced by Arch Oboler for "Lights Out, Everybody!"
I came across an interesting interview with character actor Bill Phipps
who participated in "The Chicken Heart" when it became part of a record
album entitled "Drop Dead" [the original radio version is apparently lost].
He was contemptuous of his own work in this album, as he was about Arch
Oboler in general and the scripts Oboler wrote for his landmark radio
show. "I just didn't think they were any good," Phipps says.
He goes on, "When It comes to Oboler and this genius bit, I don't see it.
Never did. I don't think he was a genius at all. Not by any stretch of the
imagination. When Oboler directed, he didn't so much watch as he listened
-- he was a radio man. He always had the earphones on. Sometimes a scene
would end, you'd look over at him and see that he wasn't even watching." [
Phipps appeared in Oboler's well regarded 1951 film, FIVE].
Quite logically, Oboler would have worn earphones, and it seems to me more
a compliment that he was "a radio man" than a criticism. Phipps contends
that he himself was never a radio actor and because of his association
with Oboler in FIVE, many writers just naturally assumed it. Of course the
interview is quite extensive, and Phipps has additional and informative
anecdotes about Oboler and other notable personalities, including Leonard
Nimoy, Victor Jory, and Marie Windsor. This is the first time, however, I
have seen Oboler, one of my favorite writers, in anything other than a
positive context.
The entire interview (pages 250-266) is found in ATTACK OF THE MONSTER
MOVIE MAKERS: INTERVIEWS WITH TWENTY GENRE GIANTS [McFarland, 1994] by Tom
Weaver. Many of our favorite radio actors are mentioned among the
interviews. It's a good read.

In 1918, the Boy was killed in battle. The Doctor tried to play God. The
Captain gave an order that sent his brother to his death. Twenty years later
they are all still marching, in the Legion of the Dead.
Join us on Sunday as the Gotham Radio Players recreate a timely drama that
has not been heard since its original broadcast in 1938. It's a moving story
of war and the soldiers who died, a lost episode from the classic horror
series LIGHTS OUT. Tune in and hear us this Sunday, March 30th, at 7:00pm

at [removed].
The Gotham Radio Players were formed in 1991 by a group of enthusiasts for
the heyday of radio drama. Our mission is to bring new productions of
classic radio programs of the 30's, 40's, and 50's to the airwaves of the new
millennium, as well as showcase original scripts written by the emerging
audio dramatists of today. Now under the leadership of producer Max Schmid
and director Steven Lewis, the Gotham Radio Players are featured regularly in
live performances on WBAI-FM, at the annual "Friends of Old-Time Radio"
Convention, and at other personal appearances in the New York City
metropolitan area.

I was asked about how best to introduce OTR to someone who's never heard any.
Not audio drama, mind you, but specifically OTR. Now, I know this topic's
been covered here before, but I have another [removed]'t suggest any
shows or give any. Instead, give a copy of It's That Time Again: The New
Stories of Old Time Radio, edited by Ben Ohmart and available from BearManor
Media. In it are twenty stories based on great OTR shows. Let the newcomer
read it, and then select a show he or she would want to hear. I've done it
and it worked.
The usual disclaimers only sort of apply here, as I do have a story in the

Martin Grams wrote:
The actual title of the program was INNER SANCTUM [removed] All of >the

MYSTERY - not INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES.
The issue that Martin has raised concerning the correct complete title of
the INNER SANCTUM program--that is to say, whether it was MYSTERY or
MYSTERIES--is perhaps, on one level, a negligible point, since the public at
large (including Bugs Bunny) typically referred to the show as just plain
INNER SANCTUM--and so did the reviewers after the series switched to CBS in
September of 1943. I'm of the opinion that neither the publicity department
at NBC nor Himan Brown himself really gave a hoot as to whether it was
called MYSTERY or MYSTERIES, since both issued announcements and
pronouncements that alternately had it one way, then the other. It was never
as consistently on the "MYSTERY" side of things as Martin indicated that it
was.
Taking a cursory glance through my files for the first few years of the
series, I found the following usages of "MYSTERIES":
January 13, 1941
Notice in the trade journal Broadcasting: "Carter Products on Jan. 7 started
a series of weekly mystery dramas, titled INNER SANCTUM [removed]"
March 16, 1941
Ad in the New York Herald Tribune: "Boris Karloff will thrill you tonight
WJZ--8:30 INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES."
May 25, 1941
Newspaper ad in the Oregonian: "INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES featuring each week
such Famous Stars of Broadway, Hollywood and Radio as Boris Karloff, Paul
Lukas, Peggy Conklin, Myron McCormick, Anne Seymour, George Coulouris."
August 17, 1941
Newspaper ad in the New York Times: "Paul Lukas will thrill and chill you in
INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES."
January 2, 1942
Newspaper ad in the Winnipeg Tribune: "Coming! INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES
presented by Carter's."
February 11, 1942
Review in Variety: "Lenore Ulric on Sunday (8) did a small role for INNER
SANCTUM [removed]"
March 6, 1942
A letter to a fan from "Raymond." The printed official letterhead clearly
says "INNER SANCTUM [removed] the office of Raymond, your Inner
Sanctum host."
July 18-24, 1942
Item in Movie-Radio Guide: "LIGHTS OUT is off the air, but several of the
actors and actresses who helped make the program the chiller-diller that it
was are still scaring the daylights out of radio audiences on INNER SANCTUM
MYSTERIES."
August 23, 1943
Article in Broadcasting: "Carter Products, New York, is replacing INNER
SANCTUM MYSTERIES with [removed]"
October 1944
Article in Coronet magazine: "12 million Americans seem to like having their
blood curdled because, for almost four years, they have been tuning in on
the wide assortment of shrill screams, death gasps, pistol shots, ghostly
voices and insane chuckles that heavily flavor the INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES
show."

George Aust <austhaus1@[removed]; talked about the Roy Rogers Museum
moving from Victorville, California to Branson, Missouri, and laments that
it won't be in the West anymore.
Some comments:
. Missouri was once the "wild frontier", complete with cowboys & Indians
(as well as "slavers vs. anti-slavers" battles and Civil War cavalry raids).
. The Rogers Museum is more of a personal collection of artifacts relating
to a modern family's history than it is a broad-based "museum".
. Its attendance had been falling for years, as its core audience of people
who remembered the Roy Rogers records, movies, and TV show declined.
. The Rogers heirs had tried unsuccessfully to find local sponsors or
affiliates to help keep the Museum going.
. Branson is a "happenin' town" for "old time" & "family friendly"
attractions, which should provide a built-in audience for the Rogers
memorabilia.
