I suspect I know the answer to this, but I'm looking for the famous Fred Allen
episode of April 20, 1947 in which he is cut off the air for about 30 seconds
for saying something derogatory about NBC. RadioGoldindex lists an excerpt for
that date of about 6 minutes that is a bit with Pat Henning. Neither
[removed] nor Jerry Haendiges have the show. Radio Spirits hardly has any
Fred Allen at all at the moment. I don't see it in the RHAC catalog. Maybe one
of the other club catalogs?
I do have the Jack Benny Program in which FA talks about it ("NBC, that big
hearted organization, gave me those 25 seconds as a vacation ..."). Can
someone either point me toward a source or at least confirm that, as far as
you know, the show does not exist? At least then I can stop looking.
Thanks,Alan

I've been listening to some of my recordings of "Information Please"
and noticed that every time after the advertisements are given, Clifton
Fadiman will tell him how long it took him to do it and sometimes commend
him on his brevity. Was this his idea, or was it something he was told to
do by the sponsor? Maybe it was a way to make sure the program didn't
'run over' the allotted time? Seems rather ridiculous to me now.
Does anyone know?
As always,
Kenneth Clarke

Miss Case was played my Lee Allman, [removed] Leonore Jewell Allman, the sister
of original LONE RANGER director James Jewell. Lee was a regular attendee of
FOTR conventions for many years during the 1970s and early [removed]
Other WXYZ actresses included Elaine Alpert, Ruth Dean Rickaby, Liz Weiss
and Elaine Hyman (in juvenile roles).

I doubt if the actresses had much contact with Trendle. They'd actually be
hired (and cast) by the programs' producer/director ... Jim Jewell, Charles
D. Livingston or Fred Flowerday. As the businessman/owner, Trendle would be
much more involved with the big picture and contracts with the series
primary stars and announcers (of key importance since the announcers
presented the sponsors' commercial messages).

Subject: Lone Ranger Promo Card Online
A collector of post cards, Stewart Lassen of Battle Creek, has turned his
collection over to Willard Library in Battle Creek, and they are digitizing
them.
This was a promo for "The Lone Ranger" on WELL & their stations and
Silvercup Bread. It is quite a photo, but who is behind the mask? Just
as interesting is the station lineup on the back. The famous WGN solo show
is listed as being at 7:30 (CST) on Monday & Friday, but 7:00pm on
Wednesday. That gave the engineers 30 seconds to reset between shows. Talk
about high stress jobs.

Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Jack Benny and his violin
In the 1960's I lived in Miami and one evening I had tickets to see Jack
Benny perform on stage with an orchestra, playing his violin. It was a long
time ago, but I think it was at the Dade County Auditorium. He play as good
as any performer I've ever scene.
