...It's not uncommon to hear a good cigar mentioned or smoked or smoking
used for comedy (Fibber McGee trying to stop smoking cigars in a late 40s
episode; Bob Hope mentioning "Mexican cigarettes" in a passing joke in a
late 1930s show in his series)....

the funniest otr program i ever hear regarding smoking was when rush's high
school principal - mr. chinbunny wanted vic to teach him to smoke cigars.

Subject: Sherlock Holmes

Hello again --

I can give some help to the OTRer who wrote the following on 1/29/09:

If so, please help! I've been trying to find episode
dates for a case that was sent to me named "The Yastley Case".

The actual name, as appearing in the Soundelux edition with Sir John Gielgud
as Holmes, was called The Yoxley Case. Doyle's original title, however, was
The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez, which involved a setting called
Yoxley Old Place.
My cassettes are dated 1983, but I know the Gielgud recordings were made
much earlier, as I heard them on WGMS in the early sixties, when I was in
the U. S. Army Band in Washington [removed] And they were probably old then,
broadcast originally on the BBC.

Hope this helps.

Subject: "Quiet Please" query

In response to Pamela Gitta's question, regarding the title of a
specific QP episode, I forwarded her request to OTR researcher and
former dealer, Ron Barnett, now retired in Vegas. He has an audio
copy of every show in this series and it is one of his favorites.
Here is his reply:

+++++++++++++++++

Based upon her recollection of the plot, I'd say it was likely one of
these five, listed in order of probability:

6-15-47 "I Have Been Looking for You" (Obsession for beautiful woman)
10-17-48 "And Jeanie Dreams of Me" (Man dreams vision of perfect woman)
5-10-48 "There are Shadows Here" (The shadow of a woman haunts a man)
5-3-48 "How Beautiful Upon the Mountain" (Vision of woman appears
on high mountain)
2-13-49 "Valentine" (A young Abe Lincoln's love for his wife)

Hope this [removed]

From: Frank McGurn <[removed]@[removed];

FDR became president in 1932 during the depression and he used radio
to keep the public informed of the conditions of the economy. Radio
was still in its infancy and he took full advantage to communicate
with the nation. FDR had a wonderful radio voice and was an excellent
speaker. My father told me he felt that FDR was talking just to [removed]
I don't think his fire Side Chats had a schedule.

FDR apparently had a talent at using the communications media of his
day. I've read the text of some of his Fireside Chats, and they read
very well. I've never heard any recordings of them, but they must
have been even more effective on radio.

Jimmy Carter tried something like a Fireside Chat early in his
presidency, sitting in an informal setting and wearing a sweater. He
also did a nationwide televised call-in show, with Walter Cronkite
hosting (parodied very well by Saturday Night Live). For some
reason, he didn't continue doing that.

But that brings to mind a question. I remember, starting with
Eisenhower, and going up to at least Reagan, when Presidents used to
address the nation from the Oval Office, and three television
networks and all four radio networks would carry the speech.
Nowadays, there are so many channels that it's hard for a
Presidential address to the nation to get that kind of attention any
more.

So my question is, in the otr days, how many stations carried
Presidential addresses? To what extent did stations run regular
programming opposite the President?
