Subject: First Radio/TV crossover

Several people replied to my request for contenders
for the first actor to play the same role on both
radio and television. All of the names suggested were
from the late 40s or early 50s. I've got a candidate
in mind who beat them all by more than a decade! Luis
Hector played Sherlock Holmes on the radio from
11/11/34 through 5/26/35. (He later returned to the
series during the Rathbone years, playing Professor
Moriarty.) After leaving the series, Hector played the
great detective on what is apparently Holmes' first
television appearance, an adaptation of the Conan
Doyle story "The Three Garridebs" which aired on NBC
TV on November 27, 1937 (and which was favorably
reviewed by the NY Times on November 28, 1937). I've
got a copy of the script for this early TV broadcast;
it was reprinted a few years ago in "The Mammoth Book
of Movie Detectives and Screen Crimes." A brief recap
of this history can be found on the following site:

[removed]

I imagine there are probably other contenders for the
first radio/TV crossover during television's early
pre-war days. (I presume no footage exists from this
era?) In Chuck Schaden's excellent "Speaking of
Radio," for example, Alan Reed mentions that he met
his wife while doing an early TV broadcast in NY in
the 30s. I imagine a lot of the early actors on TV in
NYC were also radio actors--so it seems quite likely
that some of them might have done the same role on
both medium. I suppose it'd be very difficult, if not
impossible, to track down anything specific. How many
scripts or even logs exist from that era of TV? How
much of what went out on the air was simply
improvised? We may never have a definitive answer. But
Luis Hector, if not the first, at least was pretty
early!

Cheers,
Kermyt

Subject: Thurber on radio

I've started reading The Thurber Carnival, a
collection of James Thurber's stories and cartoons
published in the 40s. The editorial comments at the
back of the book mention that Thurber's work was
adapted to radio, stage, television, and film. (Most
famously, I suppose, is the Danny Kaye version of The
Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which Thurber apparently
abhored.) The book gives no details about radio
adaptations, however. I've got the following four
shows in my collection. Anybody know of any other
broadcasts based on his work--or featuring Thurber
himself? (Maybe he was on Information, Please?)

CBS Radio Workshop 07/07/57 You Could Look It Up
Suspense 08/03/43 A Friend To Alexander
Suspense 06/15/44 A Friend To Alexander
Suspense 08/15/56 A Friend To Alexander

Thurber, or an apparence by Thurber himself. These

Subject: To Mr. Stone: about your Radio voice

I was listening to an 2 Archie shows and heard what may be you, shows
cut short and no actors or dates mentioned. However, how much higher
was the character voice vs. you real voice at the time you played the
character? (I know that you changed over time so this is a moving
target) Was it difficult to keep the voice correct and constant
during the broadcast, especially when you where older?

Thanks
