Also, for fans of Eddie Carroll's one man show on Jack Benny, he'll in San
Diego this December. Apparently, the venue just released its schedule for
the whole season, hence the early warning.

This is all about TV and movies, but it references so many actors and movies
that had radio links, I figure it is fair game. Mr. Blandings builds his
dream house, the hucksters, Andy Griffith, Rod Serling and others are
prominent.

I recently found out that Joan Beck, Barney Beck's widow, died Dec 1 of last
year.

Though the tidings are bad, thanks for sharing them, Jay.

She attended our FOTR convention for many years<

She was a faithful fan, until a year or so ago, when her own health did not
allow (Barney's had failed years before.)

And I will always recall her very gracious words about the work of this "new
face" out there.

Sincerely,
-Craig

SERGEANT PRESON'S FIRST NAME

One of the half hour radio shows and a children's record which I still have
called "The Case that Made Preston a Sergeant" has a line: "Constable Bill
Preston hoped this would be the case that made him a [removed]" In my
book, Great Radio Heroes, I made him the more formal Sergeant William
Preston. While I admire the research of Martin Grams Jr. I would been
around so long I just remember a lot of this stuff. I also recall some
publicity for the television series gave Preston the first name of "Frank".
Maybe whoever wrote that handout did not know of the radio show and record or
someone just decided to change the name. Perhaps in full it is Sergeant
William Frank Preston. -- JIM HARMON

I don't know either if Sgt. Preston's first name was ever used in the 30
minute adventures of "Challenge of the Yukon", as Joe Ross asked, but there
is a 15-minute adventure that was issued sometime in the late 1940's or
early 1950's as a special recording (I don't know either if it was on Decca,
as were the Lone Ranger adventures, or some other label), in which actor
Paul Sutton casually introduces himself as "Bill Preston".

Subject: Script Recreations

G'Day folks,

There has been some discussion about script recreations and I would like to
throw a couple of thoughts into the subject.

Several years ago I put up a proposal to the National Film and Sound
Archives in Australia, about including them as sponsors in a National Radio
Script Competition. Our idea was a National competition on three levels:

School
Community
Professional/Semi Professional

We wanted to include local radio stations to sponsor local competitions on
those 3 levels. We also hoped to include retired radio folk to assist teams
in their communities. The radio stations judged the group to represent
their region, then a state representative and culminating in a final in
Canberra at a radio convention, judged by well-known radio personalities
from the OTR era.

The National winners would then be contracted to do recreations of missing
scripts. There have also been suggestions of filming the 'behind the
scenes' and the progression to the finals to assist in financing etc.

Whilst the Archives weren't particularly interested, we have progressed to
getitng permission to using a particular Production House's scripts, as well
as their assistance with lining up the judges. We have had some expressions
of interest from retired radio producers as well as interest from some
repertory theatre members. No interest from the Federal Education Minister
as yet, but it is early days.

Once we have a rough agreement on how it will work, we will then approach
major radio networks and sponsors, particularly the original sponsors of
the same shows we are looking to recreate.

Its one of many larger projects we are involved in planning, but it has the
potential to really make an impact.

Here I am, reading the March 1959 issue of AMAZING SCIENCE FICTION STORIES
and what do I find? A short story by our own Jim Harmon, titled "Measure for
a Loner." And this is a big coincidence cause just last month I came across a
dozen letters exchanged to and from Mr. Harmon and a pioneer of old-time
radio programs from the 1930s. I know Mr. Harmon wrote a number of short
stories bu Jim, fill us in . . . how many short stories did you write during
the 1950s? Any awards? Oh, and drop me a line cause I'd like to mail you a
copy of these letters and a couple burning questions I have to help curb my
curiosity.
