Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

I don't know, Stephen. I seem to recall that radio's DICK TRACY spent nearly
as much time eating as fighting crime! Even without checking I can recall at
least three or four examples of Tracy and Patton chowing it down in
restaurants.

Frank & gang-
Well, Mr. Tollin may weigh in here, [removed]
(The info below comes more from Comics mythos than Radio.)
From: Frank McGurn <[removed]@[removed];
Did Kal-El alias Clark Kent alias Superman have to eat?
Physics would say that Energy expended requires Fuel input; I seem to recall
the idea being that, like Sleep, he did need to Eat - but not much.
Remembering that our Yellow Sun, as opposed to the Red of Krypton (or as
Brando said,
"Kriptin") gave him much of his sustenance.
Did he Bathe?
I believe he used to give suit & body a burn-clean, by flying through the
aforementioned Sun.
Another question is never took off the Superman uniform, did he
[removed] than one?
Yes. A closet full, discovered once in the Radio show. (He must have learned
to synthesize the cloth used, as the first one was said to have been made by
Ma Kent from the blankets in his baby rocket.)
When he returned to Clark Kent he appears with his suit shirt & tie with
out a wrinkle, after bing dropped in a phone booth. How did he do that.
They had been Super-Pressed into a little pocket in his cape.
Do anyone know where Clark Kent lived in Metropolis?.
Clinton Street, as I recall?
I stay awake pondering these vital questions.
Rest well!
For Bud and George,

Subject: Information on Radio Star Names
While I am a relative newcomer to the OTR hobby (2 1/2 years), I have
done a lot of reading of books, magazines, etc. However, I have not
seen anything so far about a registry of radio performers. Is there some
organization that keeps such a registry so that actors, directors, etc.
don't use a name that has already been used? Thanks in advance for any
information!

Subject: Who knows when Bill Johnstone started as the
Shadow?
Rick's probably going to get a million responses to this. Orson Welles' final
broadcast as The Shadow was the last episode of the summer series, "Caverns
Of Death" (09/11/38). (I think I've read that the summer series was
syndicated and thus there really aren't true broadcast dates.) Johnstone's
first broadcast was 09/25/38 "Traffic In Death." The day War of the Worlds
was broadcast (10/30/38), Johnstone starred in his sixth broadcast as The
Shadow -- "The Isle Of Fear."
There is thus no truth to the legend that Orson Welles stepped down from the
show due to the notoriety gained from his Martian panic. I don't know how
this rumor got started, or why it's still around. It was repeated recently in
OTTER's March 2007 issue of The Old Radio Times. I've even seen this printed
in Welles' biographies--I remember one stating that the sponsor was annoyed
because their anonymous star was no longer anonymous. Well, Orson and Agnes
Moorehead both introduced themselves by name at the end of the first season,
the 03/20/38 episode "The White Legion." So the actor's identity was hardly a
secret.
Here's another false and debunked OTR legend we really should bury for good.

Subject: Superman Dines Redux
On the subject of Superman eating, Frank McGurn isn't sure whether he did
or not, but he asks, among other things,
Another question is never took off the Superman
uniform, did he [removed] than one? It must have
gotten soiled during life saving efforts.
There I suspect we can believe that since the costume was made of super
material (bulletproof, etc.) dirt possibly bounced off it as bullets did.
That is, it never got soiled.
Another comic derived OTR character, Don Winslow, always was portrayed in
his Dress White uniform, which stayed spotless no matter what action he
was involved in. When I was in the Navy, I often longed for such a
uniform.

Rick,
Yes, Orson Welles left The Shadow to pursue his other interests, particularly
his Mercury Theatre on the Air before the famous (infamous?) "War of the
Worlds" broadcast. Bill Johnstone won the role over about 45 other hopefuls
and began his tenure as Lamont Cranston/The Shadow on September 25, 1938 in
"Traffic in Death." The date on "Death Stalks the Shadow" is correct.
I, too, have heard or read the story about Orson leaving The Shadow because of
the "War of the Worlds" notoriety, but that is just one of many bits of
misinformation that seem to be floating around about OTR subjects.
Glad you recognized Bill Johnstone's voice! It is very distinctive.

I too, would like to echo Tom's statement, for I also enjoy reading this
digest everyday. I don't remember the OTR Generation at all. I was born in
1978, long after the original Golden Age of Radio went off the air. But for
the past 20 years or so, off and on, I have listened to Old Time Radio, thanks
to my grandpa's cassette tapes. I remember staying over at my grandparents
house as a child, and down the hallway I'd hear Jack Benny or Fibber McGee and
Molly. Sometimes, I'd hear Suspense or The Shadow and I'd get scared,
wondering if the person was going to make it out alive or not. Sometimes, my
grandpa listened to OTR in the car and I enjoyed the episodes as well. He
said often that radio was better than TV because you could imagine
everything. He was right.
In 1996, my grandpa passed away, but we still kept his mountain of OTR tapes.
Throughout college, I did not listen to OTR. I listened to oldies (50s and
60s music and even that was odd for my age). I still listen to that kind of
music, I love it. I studied 20th Century History, the times when these radio
programs aired. I loved studying the Great Depression and WWII eras. I
graduated from college and eventually found a job. Two of my co-workers were
from the Old Time Radio Generation. Oh, I'd talk to them for hours on end
about the "good old days" and the radio programs.
I recently began to listen to OTR again last year after another one of my eye
surgeries. I was born with Retnopathy of Prematurity and last year, I had
cataract surgery that did not go well. I never had any vision in my right
eye, but they were able to save some vision in my left with the help of
silicone oil in the back of my eye to keep the retina in place. Anyway, I
became reacquainted with OTR around this time because for awhile I had no
vision, so I listened to the radio programs and imagined everything. My
grandpa's words came back to me as I sat there listening to the shows and
stories he had loved. I still listen today, everday, in fact. I know my
grandpa is listening with me. I am 30 years old and a fan of OTR. Thank you
for your time.

My Mom had a friend who did this at one time, years ago.
My understanding (which may, or may not, be confused) is that the reason for
using videotape for audio recording is that you can fit 6-8 continuous hours
of recording time onto a videotape, as opposed to (at most) only 2 hours on
a regular audio cassette tape (and that's ONLY if you remember to manually
flip the tape over halfway through the recording!). I also believe that the
audio was all that was recorded -- the video portion of the tape's capacity
simply went unutilized.
Hope this helps.

I don't know if they did it on TV but I'm sure - to

well. However, I watched the "Si-Cy-Sue" routine on

have stacks and rows of OTR shows on CD's on a bookcase nearby. The
neighbour asked "What sort of music do you like? You seem to have a
lot". I replied those were OTR shows I've collected and listen to on a
regular basis. "Old time radio?" he asked. I said, "Yeah, radio shows
from the 30's into the 50s. Comedy, drama, mystery and all". "Oh", he
replied, "that's interesting", the way someone would comment to a child
