1909 The international distress call, SOS, which replaced CQD (All

appeared on the Rudy Vallee Show on NBC.

1933 WLW in Cincinnati, OH premiered Ma Perkins. Just four months
later, Ma moved to WMAQ in Chicago and was heard over the entire NBC
network. Virginia Payne was 23 years old when she started in the title
role. Ma Perkins operated a lumberyard in Rushville Center. Her children
were Evey, Fay and John (who was killed in the war). One of the other
characters in the show was Shuffle Shober. Virginia Payne played Ma
Perkins for 27 years and 7,065 episodes.

1942 Garry Moore hosted a new program on NBC. The Show Without a Name
was an effort to crack the morning show dominance of Arthur Godfrey
(CBS) and Don McNeil's Breakfast Club (ABC). A prize of $500 ($5,642 in
2013 dollars) was offered to name the show and Someone came up with the
title, Everything Goes.

1945 CBS began the series, Columbia Presents Corwin. Orson Welles did
a special reading about the fall of Japan, titled, Fourteen August.

1911 Procter & Gamble Company of Cincinnati, OH introduced Crisco

Crisco as a sponsor? And remember, its digestible! ed)

1922 WEAF began broadcasting from new studios atop the Western
Electric Building in New York City.

1939 Lights Out, radio's "ultimate horror show," was heard for the
last time on NBC. In 1942, Arch Obler brought the show back to life on
CBS. The show's most familiar trademark, guaranteed to put you under the
covers on a dark night was, "Lights out, everybody!", followed by 12
chimes of a clock. (On campus there is a clock that strikes the hours
and I will catch myself saying "It-is-later-than-you-think.
Lights-out-every-body" quite often. -ed)

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 132

CALL FOR MUSIC: MORE FROM DINAH, JOHNNY, AND HARRY

In Episode 92 back in the archives here on The Olde Tyme Radio Netwok we
featured a "Call for Music" program with Dinah Shore, Johnny Mercer, and
Harry James. It was the first official program in the "Call for Music"
series, and in my description of the show I wrote the following three
edited paragraphs:

Let's go back to 1948 and tune in CBS on Friday, February 13, 10 [removed]
eastern, for the premier of a rather unique new show targeting the 18-25
age group ... Dinah Shore, Johnny Mercer, and Harry James put out their
call for songs and news about current happenings in song writing and big
bands. This was the initial episode of "Call for Music," a show which
had a run of 10 episodes on CBS and 11 on NBC during 1948. The initial
show started well, with smooth fast paced repartee (led admirably by
Dinah), jive talk (led nicely by Johnny), and alternating songs for
Dinah, Johnny, and Harry and his orchestra. It's a weekly show I somehow
missed in my youth but now thankfully can enjoy in my codgerhood ... The
only "downer" on the show for me is to hear once again the Philip
Morriss claim from "recognized" nose and throat "specialists" about how
virtually harmless their cigarettes are, so you may wish to fast forward
during [removed]

The call for music on this episode includes some wonderful songs such as
Peggy Lee's composition "Ma-ana," which Dinah, Johnny, and Harry have
great fun with by adding their own lyrics as they poke fun at singers
who write songs. We hear, according to a survey, that people prefer old
songs, so we travel down memory lane for songs like "I'll Always Be in
Love with You," a top 10 recording for Fred Waring and also for Morton
Downey in 1929 and long a favorite in our household. We are treated to
different older styles of music and singing with a song like "I'm
Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover" from 1927, concluding with a 1948
instrumental version of the song. Mercer and James combine perfectly on
"Sugar Blues," performing even better than Clyde McCoy on his popular
1931 version, and Dinah does an example of a "story song" with "Golden
Earrings." A program highlight is a salute to the 1947 MGM movie "Good
News" starring June Allyson and Peter Lawford. Dinah, Johnny, and Harry
perform "Pass That Peace Pipe," "Just Imagine," and "The Varsity Drag."

Those words described the first official show in the "Call for Music"
series as we heard it in Episode 92. Now on this new episode of
"Classics & Curios Song and Smile Time" we hear, first, the audition
show for the series, which is pretty much the same as the first official
show described above. Following that we'll hear a later upbeat America's
"Call for Music" program which aired June 29, 1948. Delightful songs on
this program include "A Polka for the Bride and Groom," "When It's
Sleepy Time Down South," "Shortnin' Bread," "A Fella with an Umbrella,"
"Once I Was Young, Now I'm Old," and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was."

The "Call for Music" series closes the audition show with one of the
most joyful pop tunes of all time with its simple but meaningful
message: "The Best Things in Life Are Free." -- "The moon and stars, the
flowers in spring, the robins that sing, sunbeams that shine, they're
yours, they're mine, and love can come to anyone, the best things in
life are free." To me that's kind of like the joyful singing of verses
from Scripture which talk of free gifts of God's creation as in Psalm
19: "The heavens declare the glory of God ... giving joy to the heart."
