REPS CONVENTION b" JUNE 26 and 27 2009
Hello fans of the golden age of radio. If you are planning your vacation
for 2009 we would like you to consider making the trip to Seattle for the
REPS
2009 Convention - Celebrating the Golden Days of Radio. The event will be
Friday June 26th and Saturday June 27 at the Coast Hotel in Bellevue
Washington (a suburb of Seattle). Fan favorite Eddie Carroll will be with us
for the
entire weekend. Eddie is best known for his amazing portrayal of Jack
Benny. He mesmerized the REPS audience when he was last in Seattle in 2007.
We
all succumbed to the illusion that we just spent the entire weekend with Jack
Benny. Eddie was Jack in a recreation of the Fred Allen show "King for a
Day"
and was stripped down to his boxer shorts revealing the large letters LSMFT
imprinted on the rear. The show ended with the audience in stitches and the
boxer shorts were quickly auctioned off! There was also a recreation of the
Jack Benny show with Kathryn Crosby as Mary Livingston. The show was a
challenge to the sound men tasked with recreating a visit to Benny's vault .
They
handled it well and received our admiration. We quickly found out that Eddie
Carroll's talents do not end with Benny. When REPS did a radio recreation of
the Lux Radio Theater's version of Pinnochio, Eddie was the voice of Jiminy
Cricket. All we could say was wow? With Donald Buka as Gapetto, Elizabeth
Ripley as the Blue Fairy ( songs and all) and Ginny Tyler as Pinnochio, this
was truly an outstanding recreation. And it sounded like the real thing! We
were thrilled and the performers were so pleased that all the work was well
worth the effort. And it was an effort! Getting the music, singing and sound
effects together was a monumental task in the hands of Gregg Oppenheimer who
had just a few hours to bring it all into one cohesive show. "We want to
put
on a great show" says Elizabeth Ripley. "Radio is great fun and we want to
bring the magic of the medium to those who come to see the shows." Elizabeth
believes that each show should not only delight the radio fan ( who can be
very forgiving) but also be entertaining to others as well. When the
performance and stories are done well enough, they can entertain everyone.
That's the
magic. When we can do these shows for people who may not know radio, who
might
walk away and say " Hey, that was fun maybe I want to find out more about
those Golden Days of Radio".
In 2008 we brought you "Lights Out- Chicken Heart", " Phil Harris and Alice
Faye and Charlie McCarthy" via the talents of Chuck McCann" , "The Great
Gildersleeve", "Sam Spade", "George Burns and Gracie Allen" , "Corliss
Archer",
"Fibber McGee and Molly" and more.
It is still too early to be able to announce which shows will be presented
for 2009 and all the old time radio performers who will appear. Each show is
customized for a certain cast based on who is available. However, we will be
looking at recreating a wide range of the best from radio. From Comedies and
Dramas, Thrillers and Adventure shows , Musical shows and Sketches.
The wonderful shows will be complimented by presentations and panels taking
us behind the scenes of that fabulous medium really not that long ago. The
personal stories, the enecdotes, the legends and facts of old time radio.
It's
a fun weekend and our friend Joe Klein from New Jersey wanted us to tell
everyone that he truly recommends the REPS experience. Say's Joe: " I love
Old
Time Radio. Being in Brooklyn, I regularly attend the FOTR Convention in
Jersey. In 2007 I wanted to go to out to Seattle because I heard of some
really
fun things that were planned for the convention. But you know Seattle is a
long way from Jersey and I almost missed it. It was only at the last minute
that I decided to go when I saw a last minute promotional flyer that looked
promising. What can I say? The convention was great and the people were the
nicest. They made me feel very welcome. And to think I almost missed it. I
so enjoyed the experience that I was one of the first people to register for
the 2008 convention.
Again another great convention - worth the trip from New York!
REPS would like to invite everyone to join us for the weekend. Currently
the cost of admission for the full Showcase is $ [removed] This includes the
Saturday night banquet.
With rising costs we may have to raise the price of admission this year but
we will offer the 2007 and 2008 admission prices certainly through February.
Please email _repsclub@[removed]_ (mailto:repsclub@[removed]) if you have any
questions or would like to receive the Showcase email newsletter alerts
with
the latest convention information.
THANK YOU and HAPPY NEW YEAR.

1939 - The Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, was read by Lionel
Barrymore on The Campbell Playhouse
on CBS. The reading of the tale became an annual radio event for years
to
come.
Barrymore played Scrooge in the December 24, 1939 Campbell Playhouse but
hadn't this not-always-annual event begun in '34?
Indeed it had. Lionel first played our shared squeezing, wrenching,
grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner in 1934. And of course,
the
Mercury Theater - who supported Barrymore in the legendary '39 broadcast -
was
Campbell's "stock company" until after the [removed], in 10/38. In fact, Orson
Welles mentions in his 1939 introduction that it is the actor's fifth time at
mic in the role.
Also, as I clarify every time the post above appears, most CAROLS in the OTR
era - and certainly, none or few of Barrymore's - were "readings," anymore
than Fulton Oursler's "Greatest Story Ever Told" consisted of "bible
readings," or a classic novel done on Lux was a "reading." We are speaking
of all-out,
classic-style audio plays, with dramatized scripts, full casts, and music &
sfx.
At the risk of being long-winded, here's some info I've collated from
several sources over the years (additions/corrections always welcomed):
LIONEL BARRYMORE as EBENEZER SCROOGE:
1934 (CBS)
The first broadcast to feature Lionel Barrymore as Scrooge was aired on
Christmas Day afternoon, as a segment of a special three-hour holiday variety
special sponsored by the Nash Motor Company. (Most likely an hour-long CAROL.)
1935, 1936, 1937 (CBS)
The Barrymore "Christmas Carol" was presented highly condensed form as a
segment of the "Hollywood Hotel" variety program, under Campbell's Soup
sponsorship; first TOM SAWYER, then a 45m. CAROL. Lionel Barrymore was too
ill to
appear in '36 OR '37 (?); his brother John took his place. The '37 show may
have
been [removed] (No recordings exist of any of these performances?)
1938,1939 (CBS)
The Mercury Theater in 60 m. "Campbell Playhouse" presentations. Barrymore
was ill and unable to broadcast in 1938; Orson Welles played Scrooge (12-23).
So, the 12-24-39 Campbell Playhouse was one of only two or three full-hour
broadcasts of the story to feature Lionel Barrymore (?)
12-24-42 Mayor of the Town (CBS) w/Agnes Moorehead
12-25-42 TREASURY STAR PARADE (Synd.) "A MODERN SCROOGE" w/Fredric March
(15m.)
1947 Decca (?) / MGM (?) 78's Records / w/Richard Hale, narr.; Henry
Daniell, "Marley" (?); dr.,Dailey Paskman; Mus., Sammy Timberg; David Rose
Orch. (?)
(24m.)
12-25-49 (?)
12-19-54 HALLMARK HALL OF FAME w/Lynn Bari (30m.)
May we all live in the Past, the Present, and the Future, and not shut out
the lessons that they teach,

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
At the beginning of "Good Morning America" on Christmas morning, the words
"Partially Recorded" appeared on the screen. I thought of the recent
exchanges on the Digest in that regard.
Diane Sawyer explained that the crew really wasn't there then ... that they
were taping the show beforehand. But in each segment, they cut away to the
news delivered by somebody who was new to me and it was obviously live.
Then they returned to the tape.
Well, this method worked for radio, as we've discussed here, and apparently
we've given the johnny-come-latelys yet another idea. (And I do realize
they've been using it for a good while, too.)

James O'Neal has a new article about Reginald Fessenden and his alleged 1906
broadcasts in the December 17, 2008 issue of Radio World. It's online at:

O'Neal doesn't seem to have looked further into F's activities in December
'09 but he has interesting new information on other aspects of the mystery,
including previous failed efforts to confirm F's account. Dan Hughes and I
are mentioned briefly but, alas, the OTR Digest is merely an unidentified
"Internet chat room."

Subject: It's a Wonderful Life radio play on stage
Last year (2007), It's a Wonderful Life radio play on stage seemed to make a major
debut. I was contracted by a professional theatre company in Atlanta to advise and
assist them with the sound effects. Before it was done I had been in touch with at
least 4 or 5 other groups in town and across the country asking many of those same
questions. (How do I [removed])
The script book comes with basic suggestions, and the script calls for a cue or
two that are NOT supported by the script and then one or two other sfx cues are
missing.
The play ran again in Atlanta this year and I expect it to continue for a while.
It seems to be replacing the 1940's Radio Hour which ran here for many years.
It is a great way to introduce an audience to the concept of radio drama.

Subject: "Wonderful Life" stage version
I have a VCR tape of the stage version of the radio version of "It's A
Wonderful Life." It was done on PBS many years ago. Right near the end is
what could have been a terrible gaffe. The actor playing George dropped his
script right into the orchestra pit. But the incident was saved by a quick
thinking member of the cast who stepped up and shared their copy with
George.
Here in the Phoenix area we also had a company doing this version as a
holiday entertainment. I did not get to see it, however.
