Subject: Hopalong Cassidy book revival
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Passing on the [removed] there have recently been two new books about HOPALONG
CASSIDY recently published that are considered "small press" and therefore can
be easily overlooked.
The first is HOPALONG CASSIDY: ON THE PAGE, ONE THE SCREEN by Francis M.
Nevins. A little more than 500 pages, hardcover (there is no paperback
edition), and documents HOPALONG in the novels and short stories, how the
rights were purchased for the movies, documentation and behind-the-scenes
stories about the movies, and the radio and TV series. Although Bear Manor
Media's book on HOPALONG CASSIDY ON RADIO covers more in-depth coverage on the
radio program (including collectibles) than the Nevins book, the detail level
is impressive. (Shameless plug: I happen to have a copy of EVERYTHING from
William Boyd's collection in my basement in big blue plastic bins so I might
be one of the only people who can truly say "there is more to be documented"
and I am hesitating saying it's not the ultimate, final word on the
[removed]) However, this is perhaps the best book on the subject available
and unless you cared for music cues and budgetary figures, this is as good as
it gets. Available from [removed]
I list the address above because it's not a book you can rush out into the
stores and buy, and as of a few months ago it wasn't available on [removed]
Mike Nevins, by the way, attends the Cincinnati OTR Convention. He usually has
a few books on my table during the weekend. Not sure if he's going to have
some Hoppy books, but if you want a copy and want it autographed, it wouldn't
hurt to order a copy and bring it to the convention. Mike was also a recent
guest on Neal's RADIO ONCE MORE program.
The other book is FOLLOW YOUR STARS by Susie Coffman. Her book is different.
It's a collection of short stories and to my knowledge, the only time someone
other than Clarence E. Mulford to write stories featuring the character of
HOPALONG. At least, licensed and authorized stories from his estate. I had the
pleasure of meeting her this past weekend at Syracuse and she was a very nice
lady. I already read one of the stories and discovered she added a few new
sidekicks that certainly mimic Lucky, Windy and California. Her book is
available on [removed] but it's very difficult to find as her name isn't
listed as an author. So I am including a direct link to that page for folks
who are interested. The retail (also hardcover) is $30 but someone had one up
for $75 which is ridiculous. After seeing that at the convention, I bought two
copies from her at a five dollar discount and just listed them on [removed]
for $30 (the five dollar discount will cover the fees Amazon will charge me).
She won't sell on Amazon, so this was the only way I could think of at the
time to make her book available but I only have two copies so once sold,
you'll have to track her down and lasso the woman, or pay the $75 someone is
offering. Also independently published and difficult to find otherwise.

With these two books, and Bear Manor Media's book on HOPALONG CASSIDY ON
RADIO, you have everything you need for both reference and recreation
regarding HOPALONG CASSIDY for your book shelf.

Subject: building a new Maxwell
The NY Times has the following story about one man's quest to build a Maxwell
from scratch, using existing parts, and drive it across the country.
Unfortunately the article makes no mention of the most famous Maxwell ever,
the one belonging to Jack Benny, voiced so memorably by Mel Blanc!

Subject: Mel Blanc or Spike Jones ?
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Hi Gang -
Both Mel Blanc and Spike Jones either used the phrase or recorded the song:
"UGGA UGGA BOO UGGA BOO BOO UGGA".
I investigated a little and found that Spike Jones recorded the song on
February 11, 1947. Mel Blanc had his radio show from September 3, 1946
to June 24, 1947. So [removed] was around at the same time for both Spike
and Mel.
I'm wondering who came up with the phrase first, or was it someone else who
coined
[removed] for both Mel and Spike. Does anybody know?
Thanks. Happy Taping. Ken Piletic - Streamwood, Illinois & Alma,

Subject: June Havoc
June Havoc, a veteran of vaudeville, theater, radio, motion pictures
and television died Sunday (March 28) at age 97 in Stamford Conn. Born
to vaudeville performers John and Rose Thompson Hovick, June first
appeared on stage at age 2 billed as Baby June (later Dainty June).
Her early years were anything but easy ones and read like an old
fashioned dime novel until she finally became better established as an
actress in the 1930's. Even then she was overshadowed by her sister
Gypsy Rose Lee. She was the widow of radio's William Spier. The
following link from the New York Times provides an intimate glimpse
into her life. [removed].
