Subject: Help dating a Bob & Ray bit
I'm hoping a Bob & Ray fan or interested other can help me date one of
their bits I heard on a cassette compilation recently.
It involves trying to find out where/how the US presidents got/get their
laundry
done.
I'd like to share this with someone from the Manuscripts Division of the
Library of Congress which houses some original receipts from Washington's
wash woman.

Subject: A Lost Prophecy
Here's another happening of mine wherein I missed the proverbial boat re a
bit of my being the prophet.
After being commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the USAF, I was assigned to attend
Gunnery school at Nellis AFB, Las
Vegas. We'd fly during the day and then visit the city at night. One night
at a blackjack table in the Sands Hotel
and casino I noticed one of the security guards standing watch over the
tables nearby. He was broad shouldered
and had fine chisled handsome features, true leading man qualities.
After noticing him I told myself I should go up to the fellow and suggest to
him he should engage an agent to represent
him for a career in the motion picture industry, but the action of my play at
the black jack table seemed more important
given I was attempting to win my week's meal money due at the Officer's mess
club. I'd play black jack or usually the
roulette wheel until I'd win the $[removed] necessary for my food bill at the
mess.
(Some times I'd be betting some two hundred bucks to win back my losses plus
that twenty five dollars.)
It turned out that the security guard was ultimately Clint Walker who two
years later would star as Cheyenne Bodie in the TV drama,
Cheyenne.
At any rate I didn't approach Clint, somebody else did, and he made his fame
and fortune anyway without my help. What really
was an irony was after I retired from the Air Force, I saw Clint Walker again
at Dodger Stadium. We were both looking at recreational
vehicles. Just think of the satisfaction I could have had for myself going
up to him and saying, "Remember me, and didn't I tell you so?"
But I didn't go up to him then either.

Subject: Conrad on Six Shooter
In digest 153, George Keppel said:
I was amused to hear a recording of a *snip* Crisis At Easter Creek
from The Six Shooter. Conrad's voice is unmistakable as an outlaw
called Red Eye Kirk. At the end of the episode, the announcer says,
"Others in the cast were Virginia Gregg, Marvin Miller, Ted de
Corsia, Robert Griffin, [removed](pause)...Red Eye Kirk." I suppose this
was for contractual reasons and I'm guessing the pause was sort of
a wink to the audience because fans of radio westerns in 1954
would recognize Conrad's voice.
I was going to mention this episode as well, but I see I was beaten to the
punch. I've always wondered about the reason for this incident. Like
George, I expect that the most likely explanation was just a contract thing,
since he was on an NBC show. But the delivery is a [removed] weird. Because
of that pause, I've often wondered if there was more to it. Almost like
it's an inside joke among the cast or something. Though, George's
speculation that it's a wink at the audience is reasonable as well.

Subject: Inner Sanctum's Mr. Macabre
Andrew Steinberg asked the following Inner Sanctum question:
Does anyone know what the "Mister Macabre" episode that purports to be an episode of Inner Sanctum is from? Re-creation, other
country? The sound quality is terrible to the point of mostly being unlistenable.
The short answer to that question: It purports to be an episode of Inner Sanctum because it genuinely IS an episode of Inner Sanctum. The real title of the story is "No Rest for the Dead" and it was scripted by one of the show's regular writers, Robert Sloane. It was first broadcast on November 25, 1946. A repeat performance on August 24, 1952 is the version that survives, with a cast that includes Barbara Weeks, Everett Sloane, and Leon Janney as "Mr. Macabre." It's one of my favorite Sanctum episodes, creepy as all get out (Mr. Macabre is a medical school cadaver who refuses to stay in one spot), and I recommend it to fans who have never heard it before. Listen to the copy at the Internet Archives Audio files (under "The Inner Sanctum 1950 Thru 1952"); the sound is very good and very listenable.
