At the end of November, I asked on the Digest if anyone knew the name of a
singer named "Kay". She sang the "Be Sociable" Pepsi jingle that I have
heard many times on "Yours Truly Johnny Dollar" episodes from 1960 where she
is only referred to by her first name. I would guess it was heard on many
other shows and I fully expected that there would be a reply at once on the
Digest giving her name. Although nearly 2 months have passed, no one has
come up with it. Indeed, I have only heard from one person and he is certain
she is not Kay Thompson. There are several other well-known "Kay"s who
could be the singer, such as Kay Starr or Kay Armen, or it could be someone
who never became famous. I am confident someone reading this Digest must know
her name and hope I shall learn her identity soon.

Best wishes from England,

John Gardner

Subject: End of the Cincinnati OTR Convention?
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I hate to see the Cincinnati convention end. It was my
birthday/Christmas/family reunion all rolled into one. I wonder if others feel
the same? I hate thinking that I will never see my Cincinnati friends again.
And I wonder if there is a way to save the convention? I live too far away to
do anything in person, but I do have the internet, and this communication
board, and I can provide help through those. I have not discussed this yet
with Bob Burchett, by the way. Bob wants out, and he mentions that he isn't
getting any younger. I accept that. But I think that someone else could take
over the local running of the show. As for stars, it doesn't matter that much
to me. We could expand the convention to early TV, and that would greatly
expand our roster of possible guest stars. Martin Grams knows a lot of these
people! And even if we had no stars at all, I'd still come. We have a lot of
"regulars" who are as professional as the real professionals, both on stage
and behind the scenes. Don Ramlow's group has been doing a no-star show for
the past few years, and I think it is just as well-attended as the shows with
stars. For me, the stars are great, but not a necessity. The big question is a
financial one: Would the dealers continue coming? The dealer room seems to
fill up fast every year, and if they are making money they will probably be
there. For those of you who attend, what do you think? Would you accept TV
stars rather than radio stars? Would you continue to attend, even if there
were NO celebrities there? We have a lot going on at the convention besides
re-creations. Martin's video shows, Neal's Yesterday USA live webcasts, Ryan
and Doug's OTRRG presentations, my own Trivia Quiz, and all the stuff for sale
in the dealer's room that we will never find anywhere else. I love all this,
but for me the chief draw is the friends I've made over the years. It is
heartbreaking to think I'll never see them again. So what do you think? Is it
possible to keep this thing going? Please join the Cincinnati Old-Time Radio
Message Board at [removed] (or use the
shortcut, [removed]). ---Dan Hughes, danhughes@[removed]

Hi Folks
This British website has over 200 hours of footage available to view.
Go to: [removed] and in their search box put in 'Wartime Radio - the
secret listeners', a 1979 BBC documentary that might be of interest to readers
of the Digest. There is also some footage of the offshore station Radio
Caroline which can be found through the search box.
Readers in the US might
also be interested to see that the website also has some rare colour footage
shot during the war by US bomber crews based in England. Best way to see that
footage is to go to the 'Browse' link on the site and following it to the
section marked 'Wartime'.
Happy hunting !
Cheers ! Graeme ( ORCA / UK )
