Subject: Mike Wallace and Casey Kasem
Joe Salerno asked:
Martin Grams, Jr. informs us that Mike Wallace was among the cast of THE
LONE RANGER radio broadcasts. Do we know what eps and do those circulate?
Summer and fall of 1941, and he played various roles from henchmen to town citizens.
Regarding the mention that Casey Kasem was Kato on THE GREEN HORNET, to date, nothing conclusive
has been found to verify he was Kato at any time on the series. I asked Casey Kasem personally
about two years ago and he said he worked for a radio station in Detroit beginning in the
mid-fifties and since THE GREEN HORNET went off in 1952, and the last 26 original episodes were
clearly not Kasem, I'd LOVE to know where that rumor started because I've seen it posted twice
now in the past month on the Digest.

Subject: Lone Ranger
In his latest post, Derek Tague signs off with "Hi-ho, Silver!",
which is what I thought I was hearing as I played beside the big
speaker on the Silvertone console when I was a kid. But maybe I
wasn't paying close attention or there was just too much static
on the AM band, because when I got my first Lone Ranger comic
book I was shocked to see the masked man waving goodbye and
shouting, "Hi-yo, Silver, away!" So, to those who have seen the
original scripts, yo-bro, what were Fran Striker's actual words?

Subject: Mike Wallace on the Lone Ranger
I'm afraid I have to correct my friend Derek (news from the ether) Tague
about Mike Wallace playing a bad guy on the Lone Ranger. Mike did indeed
appear on the program once, but as the announcer. He was pretty good too.
The episode is No. 451, "The Deputy Faces Trouble", from December 16, 1940.
One presumes the regular announcer had some last minute Christmas shopping
to do and Mike filled in.
Happy New Year everyone.

At the risk of repeating someone, Anne Francis has died of cancer
in Santa Barbara, California. From the Los Angeles Times:
<<She was born Sept. 16, 1930, in Ossining, [removed] At the age of 7,
after her family moved to New York City, she was signed by the
John Robert Powers modeling agency.
Her career as a child model led to acting roles on the children's
radio shows "Let's Pretend" and "Coast-to-Coast on a Bus," and
she then moved on to radio soap operas. In 1941, she also
appeared on Broadway, playing Gertrude Lawrence as a child in
"Lady in the Dark.">>

Subject: [removed] Margot Stevenson, 1918-2011
Margot Stevenson passed away January 2nd. She would have been 99 on February
8th.
A major leading lady on Broadway, Margot Stevenson starred as Alice Sycamore
in the original Broadway cast of the Pulitzer-winning YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH
YOU, and also appeared in 17 other Broadway productions including STAGE DOOR
and THE BARRETTS OF WIMPOLE STREET. She also starred in a number of Warner
Bros. films including CASTLE ON THE HUDSON, INVISIBLE STRIPES (alongside
Bogart and Raft), SMASHING THE MONEY RING (sharing top billing with Ronald
Reagan) and CALLING PHILO VANCE. She also did a lot of early television
work.
Margot of course was the inspiration and namesake for "the lovely Margot
Lane" on THE SHADOW, and played the role opposite Orson Welles in the 1938
Goodrich summer season (the only season that survives in its entirety).
Margot was a fixture for many years in my FOTR recreations, and I always
considered her the most versatile (and finest) actress in our company.
Margot was also one of the nicest, warmest human beings and a great guest.
She first recreated her famous radio role at the 1983 FOTR convention (with
Rosa Rio at the Hammond organ), starred in "Sorry, Wrong Number" at the 1985
convention and delivered her final FOTR performance at the 2005 convention.

Remember the numerous times someone posted on the Digest of an error in
today's newspapers that got information wrong about an old radio show or
character? Try this one.
I received an e-mail a week ago from someone representing the Washington
Post, explaining that they are doing a write-up about THE GREEN HORNET for
the upcoming motion picture. They said their write-up was to focus on the
inspiration for the movie, namely, the 1966 TV series. They also made
reference that the character of THE GREEN HORNET and KATO began as a TV
series, a spin-off from the popular BATMAN series. They asked if they could
have my phone number and call me and ask questions.
I sent a reply, stating yes, they can call me. I gave them my number. And I
also pointed out that THE GREEN HORNET began as a radio program in 1936 (not
as a TV feature in 1966). Yes, the movie is based on the TV version, but it
began as a radio show, not as a TV show.
His only reply to me via e-mail was that he was informed that THE GREEN
HORNET began as a TV series and that I "must be mistaken."
It's been a week and I never got that phone call. I can only imagine how that
article is going to turn [removed]
