I just received the latest issue of THE SILVER BULLET, a quarterly newsletter
for fans of THE LONE RANGER. While the issues (half the time) are nothing more
than a catalog of what LONE RANGER t-shirts are available for purchase and Joe
Southern (the newsletter editor) being pictured with some RANGER related event
more often than any other individual, the latest issue offers a good bit more.
There is an article about Sergio Cariello, the artist responsible for the art
work in the recent Dynamite Entertainment comic book issues of THE LONE
RANGER, a LONE RANGER giveaway for the Happy Trails Children's Foundation
being held in December, details about a Merita Bread sign promoting THE LONE
RANGER radio program topping $1,500 on eBay, and recent photos of radio
announcer Fred Foy walking his daughter down the wedding isle and a reminder
that Fred Foy just celebrated his 63rd wedding anniversary on July 6. This has
to be the best issue I have received in the two years I have been a
subscriber.
The newsletter renews annually at $22, for anyone interested.

Subject: Re: 09-30-1962
That Derek wrote:
Not everybody is comfortable with assigning 09-30-1962 as the
"end of an era" being that Arthur Godfrey and "Monitor" were still going;
Plus "Don McNeill's Breakfast Club". I'm not so sure that Monitor is an
appropriate program to include, just because it began withing the OTR time
span and occasionally included segments like Fibber McGee and Molly. If we
were to include it as an OTR holdover, we would have to include EVERY program
that remained on the air which had begun during the OTR era. That would
include Lowell Thomas, Paul Harvey, Fulton Lewis Jr, the CBS World News
Roundup, the Grand Ole Opry, Martin Block's Make Believe Ballroom, Bob and
Ray, Breakfast with Dorothy and Dick, and on and on. (And for those of us
Short Wave Listeners, Eddie Startz's Happy Station.)
therefore, wide acceptance of this theory of OTR yielding itself
to the Carson-era reign of TV is not particularly forthcoming.
Carson's entry was not very notable at the time, and to many he was a step
backwards from Jack Parr.
I wasn't even born yet. Yours/ether,Derek Tague
I was, and your Carson reference is an anachronism grown from your not having
been there. These programs I mentioned were those that I cherished even then
as dwindling . But I would stick to just Godfrey and Breakfast Club because
both of them were the only one which really continued to communicate with
their radio audiences in the same unique intimate fashion that created the
mind's eye image. (Same with Startz, but if we were to consider non-American
programmes we would find that OTR never died in many countries and have to
include My Word/My Music, Beyond Our Ken/Round the Horne, and so on and so
on.)
[ADMINISTRIVIA: However, for the purposes of this list, 9/30/1962
IS the "end of the OTR era." It's certainly arbitrary, but we have
to have _some_ guideline, so I threw a dart and there it is. --cfs3]
Your dart has hit some people deep in their hearts.

Subject: Green Hornet oil painting
I just heard from a very reliable source that Heritage Auctions, which on
rare occasion features old time radio related material, will be putting up an
original [removed] Ward oil painting (one of five or six) for auction. The
painting is for THE GREEN HORNET, completed August 24, 1939. No doubt the
cost will be expensive, but an original doesn't come along every day.

Cleaning out my loft and I found a box of audio cassettes featuring old time

INFORMATION PLEASE among them. It's about 70 cassettes so if anyone wants
them, please let me know off-line. All I ask is reimbursement of postage
