Wikipedia states"He (Jacob Cohen) took the name Rodney Dangerfield, which had
been used as the comical name of a faux cowboy star by Jack Benny on his
radio program at least as early as the December 12, 1941 broadcast and later
as a pseudonym by Ricky Nelson on the TV program The Adventures of Ozzie and
Harriet."
There are also gay comedy albums by a "Rodney Dangerfield" from the early
sixties that are NOT the same guy. It's my understanding that the name was a
show business pseudonym along the lines of "George Spelvin" for an actor who
wants to remain anonymous or "Alan Smithee" for a director who didn't want to
be associated with a project.

Subject: Nary a drop to drink
My question is: Did characters in OTR soap operas seem to have bars
in all their houses, and did they imbibe, while smoking, like I remember
from early TV soaps?
Answer: No. An occasional sot on Stella Dallas, whom the audience
immediately deduced was a rapscallion with evil intents. You also wondered
if Skip Nelson, rebellious teenage son of Carolyn Nelson (The Right to
Happiness) might not be into the joy juice, but it was never spelled out as
such. Little evidence of social drinking or overimbibing in the daytime
dramas; the puritanical dictates kept it out of "polite" society. Can you,
for instance, see Ma Perkins dispensing her wise counsel to a troubled
Rushville Center with a glass of white zinfadel in her hand? Hardly. She
would have been turned off in millions of homes and Oxydol's market share
would have hit the floor.
