Owens Pomeroy asks a question about a Gunsmoke episode called " The
Badge ". I worked on 85 Gunsmoke broadcasts, including the first, and the
actors almost never paid any attention to show titles. Also, the show was
done several weeks ago and my memory [removed] Thanks for the welcome, and
all the kind words. As Andy Griffith so eloquently put it, " Ah 'preciate!

Subject: Texas Rangers
Hi all,
Just a quick note to the gentleman who composed a log of the TTR broadcasts.
The entire series of Tales of the Texas Rangers is in circulation, including
the pilot broadcast that did not star Joel McCrea. I have the entire series
and it is one of the better quality programs out there. I think of it as
the Texas version of DRagnet.

Subject: The FBI in Peace & War
Not long ago I was in the supermarket and found myself in the soap aisle.
There I spied bars of Lava soap, a commodity I hadn't seen in years and
didn't know was still on the grocer's shelves. You know what tune
filtered through my mind, don't you? It was L-A-V-A, L-A-V-A, with that
deep male voice barking the letters before the orchestra rolled into the
March from Love for Three Oranges by Sergei Prokofiev. Is that familiar
to anybody or not?
Alas, when I picked up a package and examined it closely, to my
astonishment printed there was the name of some manufacturer other than
Procter & Gamble -- Armour-Dial, I think. We knew that P&G was selling
off some of its most popular brands for we have discussed this here
previously. Still it seems ironic that the goods that made that firm a
household name, and helped bring billions of dollars each year to it,
aren't in demand any more. Isn't there almost an incongruous similarity
to vintage radio itself?

I was wondering if there is circulating copy of the Lux version of the 1953
movie SHANE in decent sound quality. I have obtained two versions of it in
MP3 which were made from poor quality sources. If anyone knows if decent
quality version is available in either cassette or MP3, this would be most
appreciated. The versions I have listened to have considerable sound
problems in parts of the show that make it almost unlistenable.
Thanks

Subject: Wendy Warren and the News
Joe Ross recalled:
I remember hearing Wendy Warren a couple of times circa 1954. It involved
the adventures of Wendy Warren, a female radio news reporter. At the end
of the show, after a commercial, the announcer would say, "And now, Wendy
Warren and the News!" and "Wendy Warren" would come on and do a real
newscast
Actually, as I recall, Wendy never did a "real" newscast. Douglas Edwards
usually read "real" news, then ended with the "And now Wendy, what's the
news from the ladies point of view" or some such. She would then "read"
some news, which I think was mostly bogus, then break for commercial and
return as Wendy Warren off mike.
It was never an actual newscast except for Doug Edwards - again, as best as
I can recall.

I've been collecting OTR for about seven years now and I'm still looking for
a book which has photos of ALL the old players. I know that "ALL" is
impossible to hope for but I'd love to see the "also in tonight's cast"...
performers included. Every once in a while I come across a picture of a
voice I've heard many times and it is always a kick to put a face to the
voice. One of my favorite OTR actors was John Dehner. I just recently saw
a picture of him and could not believe that he was the same actor I'd seen
in countless movies over the years. I'm sure there are others like him.
Anyone know a source?

Subject: Frank Lovejoy in NORTH BY NORTHWEST?
Ted Meland in a recent post mentioned that radio actor Frank Lovejoy has
a role in NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959 MGM)...having seen NORTH too many
times to go into here, I can honestly say without fear of contradiction
that Lovejoy does not appear in that film.
I think he may have confused actor Edward Binns, who is in the film,
with Lovejoy. Binns sounds a little like Lovejoy, when you think about
it.

Subject: Re: Bob & Ray
I had the occasion of meeting Ray Goulding when he was visiting his sister in
law at her home in Fairborn, Ohio. He struck me as a polite, average person;
he certainly was not "on."
On another occasion, his sister in law's son was visiting Ray and Liz
Goulding in their Plandome, Long Island home, and he invited me out for a
visit. The house was a real castle with a turret-like front door. The first
thing you saw in the medieval-like vestibule was a painting of one of the
three Musketeers with Ray Goulding's face painted on it.
Sadly, Ray was not at home at the time, but I did meet his sons, and
Gouldings were an average suburban family.
By the way, Ray and Liz Goulding also had a "compound" in Hyannisport, right
next door to the Kennedys.

Subject: Welcome to Harry Bartell
Somehow I managed to miss Harry Bartell's posting
to this list!
That's doubly ironic, since Mr. Bartell has
always been one of my very favorite audio, radio and
golden age TV actors - both years ago in the 1950s
when I had no idea of his name and again during these
past 36 years that I've been collecting and archiving
OTR.
Thanks for joining us!
