Pls note that RUBBING alcohol is not recommended for cleaning heads as
it leaves a residue. Denatured is preferred.

Subject: Cleaning Cassette Heads
I clean cassette heads with a folded piece of very soft toilet paper, dipped
in alcohol, shaken out, and then gently rubbed against the heads and held
against the capstan. I do the same with my reel-to-reel machines.
Although one of my fellow archivists suggested that "this may be the
reason your tapes sound so s_____y." <g>

Subject: The Game, on the Other Foot?
Dear Folks-
Someone at the Classic Horror Film Board asked about an old rumor that one
time, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce switched their usual roles as Holmes and
Watson.
I posited that neither of these solid actors was vocally versatile enough to
fool their loyal audience at that - except in humor.
Did they perhaps pull this trick guesting on some variety show?
Looking forward to any info,
-Craig W.

Subject: Head demagnetizers
07-06-08
In issue #167, Glenn P. asked:
I'm curious to know the "why" to this emphatic recommendation. What
happens if a cassette head demagnetizer is turned off (or "on", for that
matter) within one foot of the playback/record head?
The answer is that instantaneously collapsing a magnetic field in the
presence of a piece of ferrous metal is how you magnetize something.
Immersing that piece of ferrous metal in an existing magnetic field, then
slowly separating the metal and the field from each (at about 1"/sec. or
slower) other is how you DE-magnetize something.
Best regards,
Jim

Subject: Radio Pro
Just an addition to that list of coming radio books I mentioned before. An
important one, and I don't see how I could've left it out! Joe Martelle is
finishing up his book on How to Be a Radio Pro, which should be out late this
year. If you've ever wanted to hear Your voice on the airwaves or are curious
about the workings of radio Today, you'll like this book. It's crammed with
interviews with online personalities past and present, plus behind the scenes
people, telling about the inner workings of stations, and how You can succeed
in the biz. It's a positive book too, just like Joe.
By the way, I don't know if I mentioned it here, but I've been doing a blog
for a while now, so anyone who's interested in the private side of BearManor
Media, I invite you all to read

which I'm Trying to update daily (and it's hard!).

stations. The program and a transcript of the program can be retrieved

Enjoy!
[ADMINISTRIVIA: While the story was a little light on sound clips (On the
Media is a production of WNYC, and is only distributed by NPR, BTW), if any
of you have larger examples of border radio programming from the '40s or
earlier, I'd be delighted to post it on the podcast. --cfs3]

Subject: Indiana Jones
I saw the new "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull" movie. It had some
state-of-the-art over-the-top CGI special fx. But the writing was so very
very bad.
The whole time I was thinking that I had a far more thrilling time just
listening to similar South American adventures in Carlton Morse's "I Love a
Mystery". Theater of the imagination beats 100 million of CGI! I'd gladly
listen to "Temple of the Vampires" again rather than have to sit through
"Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull" again.

Since he's been around radio?since 1946 I think it's appropriate to ask where
in the either is Paul Harvey? I know his beloved wife died a few months ago,
but is this an extended period of mourning or is Paul on the sick list.
Anybody know?
Good DAY!
