Subject: Ellery Queen

I do not know if this story is true, but it was told to me by Glenhall Taylor:
Charles Dannay and Manfred E. Lee, the creators of Ellery Queen were sitting
in a delicatessen back in 1929. Their purpose was not only to have a meal,
but to work out a new detective series. Of course, that detective series was
Ellery Queen. But they simply did not have a name for the character and those
they came up with didn't seem to fit. As the meal progressed, the two men
ordered soft drinks. One of them was a then popular drink called Celery
Queen. Of course, you've guessed it! With a slight change - BINGO! - a new
character was born. "The Adventures of Ellery Queen."

There is a long run of Ellery Queen shows from 1945/46 that I had hoped would
be released. But Charles Dannay's son, Richard Dannay, who is a copyright
lawyer has refused a number of times to allow the run to be released unless
he has control of the shows and the profits from same. And so, the original
network ETs sit quietly on a shelf gathering age and dust. Perhaps, someday,
the shows will at last be released. We can only hope.

Subject: Munich Crisis on BBC Archive Hour

I got this email recently from David Vaughn, producer of the upcoming
BBC Radio Archive Hour
on the Munich Crisis of 1938. David's program (date below) can be heard
on Radio Four via
the Internet (he includes the link below) and includes collections of
news reports from the
Czech, German archives and collectors including me of programs from the

is his description write-up. -Jim Widner

'A Quarrel in a Far Away Country' - a radio documentary

BBC Radio 4 'Archive Hour'
22nd September 2007, 20:00 (UK Summer Time), BBC Radio 4
Also available on the internet for one week after the date of
broadcast:

The tragic events of September 1938, when Neville Chamberlain
sacrificed Czechoslovakia in the hope of 'peace for our time',
are well documented. But only rarely do we hear the story from a
Czech angle.

In 'A Quarrel in a Far Away Country' David Vaughan tells the
story of the Munich Crisis through original archive recordings.
He has collected material from radio archives in Germany,
Britain, the United States, and above all, the Czech Republic,
where many hours of radio archive from the time have been lying,
forgotten, in Czech Radio's cellars for nearly seventy years.
Many of these recordings are in English, and they offer a vivid,
moving account of how the crisis developed, as the mood in
Czechoslovakia shifted from hope to fear and despair.

Dear Sean-

From: seandd@[removed]

Peter Fernandez will direct an episode of Suspense

In the interest of full disclosure (you might not know it, as to some OTR
fans your work doesn't exist if you're under [removed]!)

I'm honored to be appearing in Peter's SUSPENSE, in his original role (I was
slated to direct a show in that slot, but turned it over to him when he told
me of his interest.)

You'll find me at mic as well, in Arthur Anderson's 2000+ (after
"Cassius"-ing in his CAESAR last year.)

Lastly, I'll be director John "Pappy" Ford, in Gary Yoggy's (I was his "Mad
Russian," last time) STAGECOACH with Chuck McCann, et al.

Come on out - it's a lot of fun!

All best,
-Craig Wichman

Chinatown, USA; Other Realities; etc.)

Subject: CBS "Wetback" report

I'd like to put in another plug to find this show from
April, 1954. I am studying this era for my "Hispanics
In Politics" class and it coincides with the
government's Operation Wetback. Is there any way to
find the script if the show doesn't exist? Any leads
would help.
Thanks,
Nussbaum

Subject: Dating A Blondie Show
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Frank McGurn asked for help in determining the broadcast date of a Blondie
program concerning Blondie's date with a War hero. Chuck Schaden played that
episode on his "Those Were The Days" program of September 8, 2007. Chuck could
not date the program either. He thought it was late 1945.

Chuck's program is replayed at his web site "Nostalgia Digest". Here is the
link: [removed]

It is run on Windows Media player and is located at 1 hour and 20 minutes into
the progam as shown on the media player elapsed time bar. Use the mouse cursor
to advance the bar to that point if you want to hear the episode.

I hope someone else can furnish an exact date for Frank.

Regards,
Ron
