Subject: Sen Sen
There was some discussion on Sen-Sen a while ago. If anyone needs some I now
have a few packages that I just picked up. Of all places to find it, the
Milwaukee Public Museum (spent the day watching my 6 year old dig for
"dinosaur" bones).
They were selling it for $.75 USD per package.

I guess the obvious question is, are there any extant air-checks (pretty
early for air-checks) or transcription recordings of Sam & Henry? (not
commercial studio recordings)

Subject: Remastering OTR
I had some thoughts about remastering OTR.
I have heard/read/checked out several interesting methods of people
working at remastering from old sources like transcription discs and wire
recordings.
A story I'd heard on NPR played examples of harsh old wire recordings
though a newly-refurbished wire machine (utilizing a current cassette playback
head to read the magnetic impulses on the wire), and the results were
astonishingly clear. Almost all of the background noise was reduced, and
there
was much more depth and character in the audio that remained. The show didn't
specify if there was any type of external noise-reduction applied, however.
And about a month ago, someone on this list gave a link to a page on the
internet in which someone purported to place an lp on his computer scanner,
scan the disc grooves, and then apply a program to the scan to "play" the lp.
I checked this article out, and listened to the (very disappointing) audio
samples, and am still skeptical that the story is real.
However, the application of current technology to old recordings is
continually amazing to me - and the amount that we can improve audio, even
on "unsalvageable" recordings, is phenomenal.
I know that many transcription discs are extremely fragile, that some
might even only allow a single playing before deteriorating just behind the
needle. What might the feasability be of a high-quality laser scan of the
entire surface of a TD? If the scan were done at 2 different angles, and
combined, using some sort of triangulation algorithm, wouldn't it be possible
to save a disc as a 3-dimensional "virtual" object? It wouldn't even need to
be physically touched, so there would be no danger of damaging the disc(unless
the laser light might affect the disc materials).
It would only be a hop, skip, and a jump to the virtual turntable (a
computer program) to play the virtual disc. The choices in (virtual)needle
materials and angles could be tried and retried, until the best match is found
for the disc, all without touching the original at all. I'd expect that
without a real turntable, there would be no rumble from the motor introduced
into the recording (although the rumble from the original cutting would
probably be apparent). Both types of TD cutting methods (were they vertical
and lateral?) would be just as easily playable, too. The same technology
could
be applied to cylinder recordings.
Then, of course, there are the dozens of EQ, declicking, and noise-
reduction techniques that we already have on hand, to further improve the
sound.
I think that all of this should be just within reach, none of the
technology seems that far out. Maybe a self-contained unit with 2 lasers, a
processor to read/translate the scans, and a line out to connect to your home
audio setup? A device like this could replace everyone's turntables at all
levels, couldn't it? What do you think? Am I just a nut? Mr Biel? Mr
Zinck? Anybody?

I was listening to a broadcast of Lights Out and Arch Oboler said that his
story the following week was called, Chicken Heart. Was this the same
version of Chicken Heart that Oboler used on his record, Drop Dead?RyanO
Ryan,
The story may be the same but its not the same recording. Besides the Drop
Dead album version being short. It was recorded in stereo for the album. My
album is stereo so I know its not a radio recording. Talk about scary, its
Obler in stereo.

From Those Were The Days --
1940 - Truth or Consequences was first heard on radio. The Ralph
Edwards-produced program was hosted by Mr. Edwards. The show was originally
heard on only four CBS stations. Later, NBC picked up the show where it
eventually became the most popular of all radio quiz shows.

Trying to find the date of an Our Miss Brooks Show. The plot line concerns
Conklin's attempts to bring order to the student traffic in the halls

Subject: Hal Stone as Jughead
Hello all:
Just received Hal Stone's book "[removed], Archie! Re-laxx!" about his life
in radio and his adventures as Jughead on the Archie Andrew show (from
Bygone Days Press). It was an excellent read, had a lot of interesting
facts and tidbits about OTR and a ton of pictures. I was so captivated with
the book I finished reading it in one afternoon.
I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in OTR.

Subject: Bright Star Radio Program
I am trying to find out who played Patience (a maid for Irene Dunne's
character on the show) and Sammy (the copy boy in the office). The show ran
from 1952-53 and starred Irene Dunne and Fred MacMurray as the main
characters.
I think that Sammy may have been played by Jackie Kelk, but I need
confirmation for this. He is better known for playing the role of Homer on
The Aldrich Family.
I have no idea who played Patience.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions that you all can give me about
Bright Star.
Thanks in advance,

Subject: "Mark" Dillon
just finished 2 early episodes of gunsmoke. the marshals name on both shows
was mark dillon. can someone explain this and when the change was made to matt
dillon
According to the booklet that came with my latest acquisition "The Best of
Gunsmoke on Radio" by Anthony Tollin.
There were two "pilots" but neither one took off. Finally John Meston was
hired as the writer.
"Casting the starring role of Matt Dillon was more difficult. Future Perry
Mason Raymond Burr was considered for the role renamed 'Matt' by Meston who
felt the name Mark sounded too modern."
Harry Bartell was part of the original supporting cast.
Maybe he will offer more insight

Subject: Fred Allen & Prtland Hoffa
BBC Radio 4 here in England are airing a documentary series starting on
Tuesday called "Who Wears The Trousers ?". The series is about American
husband and wife double acts.
The ad in the radio guide says "Fred Allen realised that having your wife as
your straight man would make greater financial sense, but he miscalculated
Hoffa's popularity. In an interview with Frances Hershowitz, Portland's
niece, their partnership and story is explored for the first time."
You can listen online at [removed] on Tuesday at [removed] UK time,
early morning in the US. I'll be recording the series so if any members of
the digest can't listen online and would like to hear the series please
contact me off digest.
I don't know yet who's featured in the rest of the series.
