A cartoon in the Winter l948 1,000 Jokes Magazine (Bob Hope wearing a fruit
basket hat on cover) shows two angels observing a man in a hammock. The man
holds a drink and is smoking. Caption: "Fellow by the name of Reilly, I
believe!"

I assumed this was referring to Life of Riley until the spelling was checked.

Was at phrase, "the life of Riley" in use before the radio show or would the
spelling have been changed for other reasons?

Subject: vintage Freburg

How delightful that Walden Hughes should have mentioned an upcoming
Frank Bresee birthday special on Stan Freburg. I was just listening to
my Rhino Records "Tip of the Freburg" CDs over the weekend while painting
the bedroom door, and I still have his "The Great Pretender" squawking in
my mind's ear today.

I don't have anything of substance to contribute -- the tapes I made of old
Freburg shows off the Armed Forces Network in 1970 were onto a reel-to-reel
at 15 ips, and the tapes have probably badly deteriorated by now, even if
I knew where they were stored -- but I sure hope Mr. Bresee manages to
dig up two routines I was very disappointed not to find on this huge Rhino
collection:

1. The discrimination complaint by Miss Jupiter (voiced by June Foray, of
course) when she wasn't let into the Miss Universe contest:

"I HAVE climbed out of my flying saucer. I left it out in the parking lot."
"Yes, but those WHEELS, what about those WHEELS?"
"Those wheels, as you so indelicately put it, happen to be one of my
best features: some girls got curly antennas, other girls got cute
      suction cups . . . I got shapely wheels!"

2. The routine where June Foray keeps dialing the wrong number,
TRafalgar 4-0598, for Max's Delicatessen, and getting Stan at home,
from whom she keeps trying to order a list of goods, when she should
be dialing TRafalgar 4-5098. Eventually Stan and his wife get into a
big argument with the woman and her raspy husband over the phone:

"If your stupid wife would dial the right number, I wouldn't have to
     insult her."
"Now listen, you crumb; you insult my stupid wife once more, and
I'll come over there and punch you right in the nose!"
    "Yeah?! You and who else?"
    "Me and my stupid wife."

Anybody remember these? For that matter, anybody have a clean copy?
Or is there perhaps another Rhino collection on which they might be
found?

Subject: Let's pretend book and other assistance

Hi all and thanks for the many kind postings , both about the book and other
pertinant things concerning my search for information.

First of all to Mr Gramm, whose scholarship in and publishing about "all
things OTR" have furthered the enjoyment of my hobby for myself and many of
my friends, Thank You sir.

Hal, thanks too for pointing out the book, as had Charles here.

I will get this book tomorrow as I have already received contact information
to order it from the publisher/distributor.

I had a question about print size as I am not sort of a 'low vision'
collector and was worried if I could make out the print, even with a
magnifying glass. Paperbacks are notorious for saving money and for becoming
illegible to people with eyesight problems. I have already given away my
library which I had carried with me worldwide while in the military so I was
a bit reluctant to start books purchasing again.

I wonder why these things are not published on a cd, as a PDF file, which
can easily be magnified. it would certainly be worth the small cost if it
were a reference I could reference easily. I would purchase an extensive
library of OTR related books if it were available like this.

Again, thanks to all for the work and insight.
Cheers,
Patrick

Subject: This and That

    Hi all,
I just wanted to comment on a few things from
the last couple of Digests.
First, it's been my pleasure to know Martin
Grams for about 5 years now. I've always known him to
be a very friendly, honest, down to earth guy who
really loves OTR. I'm guessing the reason he didn't
mention his name re: the Let's Pretend book is because
he's a very modest fellow. And he'd be the last person
whose ethics I'd ever question. 'Nuff said about that
unfortunate remark.
It's been great reading all of the posts about
OTR baseball. Thanks to all who have shared their
thoughts and rememberences. I was especially
interested in all of the wonderful announcers who were
mentioned.
Jim Britt struck me as a bit wooden in his
style. Does anyone else who's listened to the 1948
World Series notice what seems to be a little tension
between
Britt and Mel Allen?
I've had the pleasure of corresponding with
and meeting the legendary Ernie Harwell. He's not only
a Hall of Fame announcer, he's a Hall of Fame person.
And I agree with [removed]'s see some of
those great OTR books come back into print again!
Ok, well that's my 2 cents worth. Take care
everyone!

Subject: The Falcon

I recently picked up a couple of cds of episodes of The Falcon from Audio
Classics (and I've got to tell you, the sound quality is AMAZING. The best
I've heard from anyone hands down). It's a pretty good show. Not as good
as a West Coast show like Philip Marlowe or Sam Spade, but better than the
syndicated shows like Boston Blackie or Philo Vance which I find to be
pretty dull. Maybe along the lines of a mediocre West Coast entry like The
Saint.

[removed]'ve been a fan of the Falcon movies for a long time, and it's
brought back to mind a question that I've had for some time. Why did they
change the name of the Falcon from Gay (or Tom) Lawrence to Mike Waring? I
also noticed that the name of the creator of the character on the radio
series was Xavier someone, instead of the person who wrote The Gay Falcon
(wasn't his name Michael Arliss, or something?). Were there two characters
in popular literature known as The Falcon? I've only found evidence of
one. Any insight would be appreciated.

Howard Blue has a penchant for rubbing me the wrong [removed] all started some
time ago when he accused (or inferred) that some of my good friends (and
acting buddies of long ago) were responsible (indirectly, it seems) for
causing some of the OTR "Blacklisted" individuals to commit suicide.

What bunk! And now, he has the gall to impugn a really decent young man in
the person of OTR author Martin Grams.

In response to a query here in the digest about "Lets Pretend", Martin and I
recently posted some information as to how to obtain Arthur Andersons great
book about that program.

But Blue manages, once again, to get me riled up.

Re Martin [removed] comments about the new version of Arthur Anderson's
wonderful "Let's Pretend" book.

While touting the book, Martin identified Derek Tague as one of the two
fans who contributed to the log in the new version but failed to identify
himself as the other contributor. I've long admired Martin's ambition and
research efforts.

But it would have been more appropriate and ethical if while touting the
book Martin disclosed his own interest in it as a contributor.

Give me a break.

The way I read that last paragraph, Martin's posting was "inappropriate" and
according to [removed]"unethical".

I now paraphrase Blue's last [removed] "It would have been more appropriate
and ethical for Blue to butt the hell out on this topic". Who the hell died
and left Blue the arbiter of ethical behavior? And, Blue's comment foolishly
implied that Martin had a financial stake in Anderson's book. Do I suspect a
bit of jealous rivalry here? Could it be that any of Martin's books probably
outsell Blue's book?

I recently heard some episodes of the Orson Welles series The Black Museum

Finally, how accurate was the show? Does (or did) Scotland Yard have a "Black

fruit of the writers' imaginations?

When Martin Scorsese presented the "Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award" at
the Oscars, he described Hersholt as playing various doctors in the
movies. We OTR fans all remember Hersholt for his seventeen year radio run
as "Dr. Christian," even though Scorsese didn't mention the character by
name.

There is a bizarre connection to Scorsese's biopic on Howard Hughes to
"Dr. Christian." Rosemary DeCamp played the part of nurse "Judy" during
"Dr. Christian's" historic run. It was into her house in Beverly Hills
that Hughes' plane plummeted, a fiery crash depicted in "The Aviator."
DeCamp talks about it at length in her wonderful spoken biography for
Cambria Spoken Words entitled "Tales from Hollywood." Released in 1991,
the three cassette reading by DeCamp of her own Hollywood journey would be
well worth purchasing. There is much on old-time radio.
