Subject: Re: OTR Voices
This is probably an impossible question to answer, but I have to try. The
question is about the voice of an actor who appeared on several shows in the
late 30's. He appeared on quite a few Shadow programs with Orson Wells, and I
also heard him on the Terry and The Pirates show. He always plays the heavy.
I recall one Shadow episode in particular. The show was titled "Death From
the Deep" and he played the foreign agent who was behind the torpedoing of
commercial ships. His voice is so distinct that it is impossible to not
recognize him in any show. It is a high pitched voice and I have heard him do
many accents. In the Terry and The Pirates show he played a Chinese General,
again a bad guy.
You folks are good, but this may be asking to much of even you. I realize I
have not given you much to go on, but he was a radio character actor for I
have never heard any credits for him. He is like the deep voiced actor who
used to appear on "The Lone Ranger."

Thought you all would be interested in legendary movie and radio star
Frances Langford. She is a native of my town, Stuart, Florida, and she
has been making the front page of the local daily newspaper for over a
week now. Her peacocks have been annoying the neighbors with their noise.
Her estate is downstream and on the opposite bank of the St. Lucie
(navigable) River from us. She is the widow of Ralph Evinrude.
About a half dozen neighbors complained that the noise from the peacocks
kept them awake at night, and wanted them to go. However, the rest of the
community went to her defense, flooding the newspaper with letters in her
support, suggesting that the complainers be the ones that should leave.
She is well loved here and she is a constant supporter of community
affairs.
By the way she owns a new 90 foot ocean going yacht , which replaced the
old one lately, so don't worry about her well being!

Just my $.02 on the question of whether to paste openings/closings/etc. onto
shows for which they are [removed]
Someone came to me a while back with a mystery. They had a Jack Benny
program, but couldn't find a date on it. I asked for the usual information,
like guest stars. They sent me the list of stars, and I knew that at least
two of them had never been on a regular Benny show. To make a long story
short, we spent about two weeks E-mailing back and forth, going over any cues
in the script that would point to an era, what regular cast members appeared,
etc.
Finally we decided that someone must have gotten hold of an extended Benny
guest shot on a show like "Command Performance", decided it was a Benny show,
and spliced in the opening, closing, etc. I'm sure it was done with good
intentions, but it took a lot of time to determine what had probably happened.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, it seems to reason that if I have an OTR show

rights to do anything with it. From what I understand Radio Spirits could
come after someone circulating such material even though Radio Spirits have

Both Martin Grams who wrote SUSPENSE: Twenty Years of Thrills and Chills
(Morris Publishing,1997) and Tom Price (co-writer of the classic HEAVENLY
DAYS), who compiled "The Ultimate Log of Suspense," which he released in
1987, agree that there were a total of 8 "Suspense" renditions of
Fletcher's radio play, "Sorry,Wrong Number."
They also agree on the air dates: 5-25-43; 8-21-43; 2-24-44;
9-06-45; 11-18-48; 9-15-52; 10-20-57; and 2-14-60.
So, it must be true, right?

What I enjoy are the unexpected surprises in an old-time radio broadcast.
A good example would be an episode of "Father Knows Best," in which Robert
Young alludes to President Truman's distress over a music critic's comments
about his daughter. It brought the house down.
Last night, I listened to the May 28, 1950, broadcast of "Our Miss
Brooks." At the end of the show, in character, Eve Arden announces her
summer replacement as an "up and coming young comedian" named Steve Allen.
That was real treat.

Subject: San Quentin on the Air?
After a brief and undistinguished career as a radio announcer in Northern CA,
I switched to the criminal justice field, first as a cop, later as a
probation and parole officer, and today as a consulting criminologist. When I
wrote my master's thesis, one of my subjects was the wartime broadcast series
called "San Quentin on the Air" . It was a remote out of the prison, carried,
I believe, by KFRC in San Francisco. The show was produced entirely by
inmates, many of whom were very talented. The "commercial" consisted of a 3
minute talk by Warden Clinton Duffy, who told about the inmates' efforts in
collecting blood for the Red Cross, working on scrap collection drives, etc.
I later became acquainted by Duffy, who became a member of the CA parole
board and who is now deceased. HE helped me with my thesis, and told me that
he had, personally, selected the show's theme song which was "Time on My
Hands". All of the musicians were inmates, and the announcer who was
particularly good, got a job at some N. Ca station when he was paroled, but,
alas, he wrote some more bad checks and went back to the slammer! Anybody
remember this program or know anything about it? bob keldgord

Folks in N. CA may want to check out this website. It's a bunch of veteran
broadcast types from the San Francisco area--not all "on air" types. One has
to have 20 yrs in the business to belong, and they have a bunch of social
events. A roster of their membership is on the site. A similar group is now
being organized here in Sacramento, which is CA's capital and about 90 miles
NE of San Francisco. During the hot summers, especially when CA is
experiencing a "rolling Brownout" with no electricity, we Sacramentans say
that we're 90 miles from SF, 90 miles from Tahoe and 2 feet from hell! bob

I would also call your attention to the 1950 Vincent Price movie "The Baron
of Arizona" related to a hoax concerning the Peralta grant.
KTAR, Phoenix and attendant network had a terrific (well at least this
teenager thought) history program called Arizona Adventure which featured
programs around the people and events such as: Steamboats on the Colorado
River which no longer reaches the Sea of Cortez, Cochise, the Earps,
friends and enemies, Hi Jolly the camel driver for the failed Army
experiment of using camels as pack animals in the Arizona desert (too rocky
for their feet),Nelly Cashman who left Tombstone for the Yukon gold rush
and of course Jacob Walzer and the Lost Dutchman mine in the Superstitions.
These programs are probably lost to the ages. I doubt that Fannins Bu-gas
(the sponsor) exists and fifty years later everybody at the station would
probably say "Huh"
The overture to the Flying Dutchman does not conjure up a ship fighting the
waves at sea but the Arizona desert, the Superstition Mountains and the
anticipation of a rifle shot and an announcer saying "ARIZONA ADVENTURE"

Subject: LONE RANGER and RAY BRADBURY sighting, GOLDEN
AGE of OTR collections
A month or two back, a lister asked if anyone had seen the new RSI 60-show
LONE RANGER and OLD-TIME RADIO SCIENCE FICTION SHOWS SELECTED BY RAY BRADBURY
collections at any of the discount membership warehouse chains like Sam's
Club or Costco. I'm happy to say that I just saw both collections at a Sam's
Club in Austin yesterday (and purchased cassette sets of each . . . at only
$[removed] each, less than half the list price of $[removed]). The BRADBURY set
includes audio and written forewords by Ray, and both collections contain
64-page historical program books by yours truly.
Speaking of which, we really are living in the Golden Age of Old-Time Radio
and classic comic strip/book collections. I remember what it was like back
in the 1970s when it was a big thing when another SHADOW, LONE RANGER,
SUPERMAN or JACK BENNY OTR LP record appeared in the stores . . . usually for
around $[removed] for two half-hour shows. Today, a quarter century later, the
general public can pick up digitally remastered collections for under a
dollar per half-hour show (and less than 50¢ a show at the discount
warehouses). Up until a few years ago, the commercial recordings of THE
ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN would usually contain a few unrelated serial episodes
. . . no complete storylines. And the other option, even as recently as five
years ago, were runs of dubs off the same murky-sound SUPERMAN recordings. I
really love the Smithsonian set of the entire "The Atom Man" storyline (which
sounds like you're in the studio with the actors thanks to the labors of
Chris Lembesis and Roger Wolski) and the RSI 119-show SUPERMAN collection . .
. and they'd have an honored place on my bookshelf even if I hadn't been a
part of those collections. And while I may be a bit prejudiced as the
author of the historical booklets, I'm sure I would have been thrilled back
in the 1970s and 1980s if similar books had been included with background on
the shows, cast IDs and photos of the performers. (BTW, people like Bill
Nadel and the Gassman brothers provide an invaluable service in identifying
the actors' voices and cluing the rest of us in as to who is doubling which
characters, etc.)
Same with the archive editions of classic comic books and comic strips. It's
wonderful to be able to obtain hardcover reprints of the earliest runs of the
SUPERMAN comic books and newspaper strips, BATMAN, Will Eisner's SPIRIT, Jack
Cole's PLASTIC MAN, Simon & Kirby's CAPTAIN AMERICA, the EC LIBRARY, Ditko's
SPIDERMAN, Kirby's FANTASTIC FOUR, the Kitchen Sink Press collections of Al
Capp's LI'L ABNER, NBM's reprints of Caniff's TERRY AND THE PIRATES and
Manuscript Press' full-size reprints of Hal Foster's PRINCE VALIANT. And
it's wonderful to be able to read such material in an archival form where one
doesn't have to worry about damaging some pricey collector's item. --ANTHONY

You see, this is way everyone needs a
concise log with correct dates and episode information
because it's the only accurate way to keep track of
what we have. The information that "RJR" has should be
shared and shortly it will be.
Now it's time for one
more shameless plug about "The Chattanooga Old Radio
Club." It's the best club around and when "RJR" is
back up and running again I plan to an exclusive flyer
in with our bi-monthly publication and offer all club
members an exclusive 20% discount on any merchandise
bought from "RJR." But it's going to take until at
least mid-September or early October before things are
up and running again. You can contact the President of
the "Chattanooga Radio Club, "Beautiful" Bob (His
wife's nickname for him is "Rapid Robert but I don't
know why) at badaxley@[removed] and trust whenever
I say, He ain't so bad. His second in command,
"Gentleman Jim Adams" is now back on line also. You
can reach "The Bald God" (his wife's nickname and
again I don't know why!) at adams256@[removed] and
either of these two fine gentleman and former friends
will be glad to E-Mail or snailmail you any
information that you might want.
One last little thng
before I go. Agnes Moorehead was the most prolific and
talented actress to ever grace the radio airwaves. Do
you ever stop and think that she could've done the
"Sorry, Wrong Number" role 3 or 4 times without ever
missing a beat? By the way, There is another episode
of another series that had me confused like this for a
long time. (Some people say I'm still confused!) It
was "The Magic Christmas Tree" on "our Miss Brooks."
The two copies I have are 99% alike. Same script, same
jokes, same acting, same voice inflections etc. It
took listening to the two tapes 5 or 6 times before I
finally realized why they were two totally different
broadcasts. The answer lied within the kiss that "Mr.
Boynton" gave "Miss Brooks." In the 1949 version there
is absolutely NO audience reactin whatsoever but when
Jeff Chandler kisses Eve Arden in the 1950 version the
audience goes bananas and that's what told me that
they were two different broadcasts.
Good night all, and don't forget
to fill up "Beautiful Bob" and "The Bald God's" E-Mail
boxes with inquieries and they can both tell you how
the revivial of "RJR" is going - if they're still
willing to speak to me!

American movie stars of the 20s & 30s Ben & Bebe lived here in England for
many years and between 1950 and 1961 had a very popular comedy radio show
with their children. "Life With The Lyons" ran for over 300 episodes, of
which I have 86, most of which came from Australian transcriptions, but
there might be more circulating. I believe a large collection is in an
archive somewhere. If anyone has any will they contact me [removed]'s a very
funny show and the scripts by Bebe are very sharply written.
On a different topic, I recently wrote that the BBC were looking for lost
radio & tv comedy shows when the tapes were re-used. Among the missing shows
were 5 episodes of the comedy show "Dad's Army" which American readers might
have seen or heard. Two were handed in to the BBC having been thrown out in
the 1970's from a viewing studio and "recovered" from the trash can by a
studio worker who took them home. He couldn't play them at home but kept
them in his attic until his daughter made him throw them out when he moved
into a retirement home. Rather than destroy them he gave them to a friend,
and it was this man, in his 80s, who contacted the BBC. The two TV episodes
have already been digitally re-mastered and will be screened in the next few
months. So things do get re-discovered ! Now how about the lost Hancock's
Half Hour shows, especially those when Tony Hancock fled to France and Harry
Secombe subbed for him ?

Why? Dolby decoding should only be used if the recording has been
encoded with Dolby. It is not meant for reducing noise on anything but
something that has been mastered with the process.
What it is "meant for" is all well and good. All I know is that the input file

<< Suspense originated in Hollywood.

The above memory is from the period when the show came from Hollywood.
When the series began in 1942 it originated from New York airing Wednesdays
and then later on Tuesdays at 9:30 PM EWT. The shows during this period
were done
only once airing out west at 6:30 pm PWT.
When ROMA WINES became the sponsor the show aired Thursday Nights at 8PM
in the east. The interesting thing is that the repeat show was not done until
the following Monday at 12 midnight. My local west coast station of the time
picked up
the latter feed for a Monday night at 9pm airing (Pacific time).
In my collection I have "Donovan's Brain" in two parts . One of the parts
clearly mentions the show as being on Thursday and the other part declares it
as Monday .
So obviously in my collection one was taped from the Monday feed and the
other from the Thursday one. At some point during the ROMA WINES years the
repeat performance was moved to 12 midnight on the same Thursday as the
radio logs from the west coast in 1946 show SUSPENSE at 9pm Thursdays .
A few years later it was back to a one performance show when it aired
Thursdays at 9PM Eastern /6PM Pacific for AUTO LITE.
