Subject: Sad Day for Radio Drama in Canada

Just a few months after a gala celebration of its 75th Anniversary, the CBC
announced this week that it was ending all production of radio drama on CBC
Radio One. The most recent Federal Budget cut the Corporations budget
allocation by some $115 million.

Over the last ten years or so, repeated budget cuts have forced CBC to reduce
its programming. In the 1990s, there were a number of recurring drama series
on CBC Radio, including the much-missed "Mystery Project". Past cuts meant
the end to such programming but the CBC has managed to continue to produce at
least one-half of original drama each week, including the highly acclaimed
"Afghanada" that ended in December after 6 seasons and 103 episodes. Just
last week, the drama "Trust, Inc." ended its first season of 13 episodes. I
guess now we will never know how the writers saw the series ending.

The CBC has a long and highly regared history of quality radio drama right
from the very begiining and reaching its zenith in the Golden Age of radio.

RIP CBC Radio Drama 1936-2012.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

A few weeks ago Charlie gave a couple of OTR groups a gentle nudge when he
noted loss of national conventions for early radio enthusiasts. We got
the hint and SPERDVAC would now like to officially announce plans for an OTR
convention November 9, 10 and 11, 2012 near LAX.
Our salute to network radio will begin with registration in the late
afternoon Friday, Nov. 9. SPERDVAC has selected the Hacienda Hotel, 525 N.
Sepulveda Blvd., El Segundo, CA 90245 as the venue for this event. It's
located about a mile south of LAX and free shuttle service between the
airport and hotel is available 24/7.
For those wishing to stay at the Hacienda, a convention rate of $79
per night plus 8% bed tax is being offered. (The bed tax in Los Angeles is
15%.) There are wheelchair accessible sleeping rooms available and those
requiring one are encouraged to make reservations early. The Hacienda's web
address is _[removed]_ ([removed]) and
their toll-free phone number is (800) 421-5900. Please specify attendance at
the SPERDVAC convention to receive the special room rate.
Soon we should be able to announce planned programs and performers.
The entire convention package will cost $[removed] and includes dinner on
Friday and Saturday evenings plus Sunday brunch. Guests will have a
selection
of available eateries for breakfast and lunch on Saturday.
We'll post updates here on the Digest in the coming months. We look
forward to seeing many OTR Digesters at our convention.

1933 Backed by the On the Trail portion of the magnificent Grand
Canyon Suite, Johnny Roventini, pillbox hat and all, uttered the words
"Call for Philip Morris" for the first time on radio. The famous phrase
was said in perfect B flat pitch and tone to perfectly match the
accompanying music. This "Call for Philip Morris" phrase became one of
the most famous in all of advertising.

1935 People gathered around to listen for the first time to what would
become the ultimate horror show on NBC, Lights Out.

1924 The WLS Barn Dance began airing on WLS.

4/20

1935 Your Hit Parade was first broadcast.

1947 Fred Allen didn't find things so funny when censors cut him off
the air during his broadcast. Allen was telling a joke about a mythical
network vice president when he was suddenly taken off the air. One

1940 Take It or Leave It, was first heard on CBS on this day. Bob Hawk
offered contestants a top prize of $64 ($968 in 2009 dollars). No,
there were no lovely parting gifts or consolation prizes that we could
find. Losers just left.

1949 The prestigious George Foster Peabody Award for Broadcasting was
presented to You Bet Your Life star, "The one, the only, Groucho
(Marx)." This was the first time the honor had been awarded to a comedian.
