Subject: CBS Stock Music

RyanO stated:

NBC must've sold the library to CBS a few years later, because you can also hear that music on Yours Truly,
Johnny Dollar.

That might not be entirely correct. I have no doubt the stock music was reused. The musicians (composers & conductors) often
reused their own scores for radio and television productions. Thus William Lava, for example, did music for programs on both
networks. While CBS did retain many of the scores for their stock library, and reuse them repeatedly for numerous radio and
television programs, I don't think they would have bought music tracks from NBC. But I wouldn't be surprised if the
musician used the same score for another radio program airing on a different network.

If you want to have some fun with music scores (especially those who are very familiar with Bernard Herrmann and Lucien
Moraweck's music scores), listen to CBS Radio Mystery Theater episodes. I've heard scores that were composed for The Twilight Zone,
Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, and my favorite has to be the shocker of all [removed] the theme to Dark Shadows featured on an episode
of CBS RMT!

 SEATTLE

In case there are people out there who don't know this, Rock 101 in
Vancouver BC Have been broadcasting their Lights Out series for quite a
number of years and can be Heard on line live as well as via ondemand at
10pm Sunday nights Pacific Time. Two hours of Mostly uncut OTR with
original commercials intact. They also mix in some BBC shows. You can
listen on line at: [removed]

On a side note:

Finally over here in Seattle, Retro TV shows on the schedule the Jack
Benny Show from 7pm-8pm. But the thing of it is, it is interrupted with
a rebroadcast of the KIRO TV 6pm-7pm news all the time. Go figure it. If
I can encourage anyone from the Seattle and surrounding area on this
list to email or call KIRO-TV which owns the channel RETRO-TV is carried
on here, maybe we can encourage them to actually show the program as it
is listed in their schedule. KIRO's web page is: [removed] Poor
Jack, it seems that not only does CBS want to keep his shows under lock
and key, but even KIRO don't think his shows are important enough to be
seen again even though they list it as being there :(

Subject: Just a trace of reality

1937 The longest running detective show debuted. Mr. Keen, Tracer of
Lost Persons lasted until 1955. Three different actors played the title
role, Bennett Kilpack was Mr. Keen the longest, and Arthur Hughes saw
the final show. Phil Clark also played the part. There were many more
than three sponsors Anacin, Kolynos (a toothpaste), BiSoDol antacid
mints, Hill's cold tablets, Heet liniment, Dentyne, Aerowax, RCA Victor
and Chesterfield cigarettes. Some are long gone, some are still around,
some don't advertise on radio anymore, and some are not allowed [removed];

It seems like I've spent a lifetime trying to correct the mistakes that were
originally penned by a nameless hack sans accurate data. His words have
been copied scores of times over the years. My intense scrutiny of all of
the scripts of Mr. Keen housed at the University of Wyoming early in this
millenium surfaced many new revelations reported in detail in my book "Mr.
Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons."

The most grievous error to the purists among us is that there never were
three Mr. Keens as this oft-repeated statement allows. There were two,
Bennett Kilpack, who remained until he was too ill to perform any longer in
late 1950, and Philip Clarke (seemingly an addendum when you read he "also
played the part"). Clarke was there from 1950 until the final broadcast in
the fall of 1955. Interestingly, both Kilpack and Clarke were native
Englishmen who came to America to seek work as thespians on the stage. It's
ironic that the longest running detective in broadcast history in any format
drew two Brits to its namesake role. ("Saints preserve us!")

Arthur Hughes, one of the most durable daytime actors in radio, the
venerable Just Plain Bill (1932-55), stepped in for Bennett Kilpack on nine
occasions when the leading man of Mr. Keen wasn't available -- in sickness
and while Kilpack was vacationing. Nine times doesn't make a star over an
18-year run, or even over the 13 years that Kilpack played the lead. As
credible as Hughes was, he never was the "lead" of Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost
Persons. Period. And I wish, case closed, but I know it isn't and won't
ever be because too many sources repeat information without documentation.
Yours truly is guilty of same, just not in this instance in the modern
epoch.

Aside from that, in regard to sponsorhip, there may have been many more than
three sponsors as claimed but Anacin, Kolynos, BiSoDol, Hill's, Heet and a
plethora of added pharmaceutical commodities were all made my one
manufacturer, American Home Products, who never advertised under its own
name. That's a fascinating story in itself and is revealed in my book "Sold
on Radio."

I've tried to set the record straight on behalf of those to whom little
details matter. I guess it's probably a quirk of the journalistic craft.

Actually, there are tons of radio actors on the show and you'll see numerous
references to radio broadcasting. Eve Arden, Milton Berle, George Burns, Guy
Lombardo and a few radio announcers make appearances. I sometimes suspected
that the producer piggybacked on the popularity of the radio program of the
past and was thus able to get such luminaries on the program -- sort of an
offer to revisit the by-gone era.

I believe the New York Philharmonic has been broadcasting since the mid
1920s, although I can't say it has been continuous since then. I know
some air checks from that time exist and have been issued on CD. Not
looking at my copy, but I am thinking that the date was 1924. Yes,
before electrical recordings were commercially available. These were
made because Western Electric made tests of their electric recording
process. Dr. Biel could give a better summation of that story.

If only more OTR survived from that era. It is fascinating to [removed]
