Subject: Re: Collection OTR shows

I'm probably the last to chime in on this subject. We have a couple
of clients that need several thousand CDs duplicated and I'm just now
getting caught up on reading my non- business email.

As most of you know from my older posts, I started collecting radio
programs in 1952, when my parents bought me a tape recorder for my
Bar Mitzvah. When you are 13 and tape cost $[removed] per reel wholesale,
and you main income is an allowance, you become very picky on what you record.

I remember that I use to record the Lone Ranger every Monday,
Wednesday and Friday. And then when the tape was filled up, I'd
record over it with new LR shows. I think I was able to purchase
about a dozen reels of that between June of 1952 and December of that
year, because those are the dates on my first 12 reels.

I also discovered cheaper tape at Lafayette Radio. I think a 1200 ft.
reel cost $[removed] or something very close to that. I ordered a lot of
Lafayette's tape in those early years.

It was not until the early 1970's that I discovered other collectors.
I think being a collector of one item causes you to save other items.
Because in addition to collecting the radio shows, I also saved every
letter and catalog I ever received for every collector I traded with.

A while back I went digging into one of my filing cabinets that held
all this correspondence and grabbed a handful of folders. Below are
the name of some of the people I traded with.

In no particular order, I just picked up what was on top and it
turned out to be Supplement No. 9 of Pat McCoy's catalog, HOW WELL I
REMEMBER. Right under looks like his complete catalog with a typed
note attached. It reads,

Dear Mr. Berney: Am interested in trading with you. Just as soon as I
finish cross indexing my supplement 10 I will get back to you with a
want list. Sincerely, Pat McCoy.

There is a letter dated February 7, 1978 to Ward Erwin of Lakeland,
Florida. I was writing him to remind him that we had traded about 5
years earlier when I lived in Miami and that I had some new Bob and
Ray material that he might be interested in.

Steven Darnall of Lagrange, IL, wrote to me in March of 1979, asking
if I'd like to trade with him. He saw an ad I had placed in National
Radio Trader. My want list from him included a number of Jack Benny
shows with Orson Welles, Blondie and Boston Blackie.

Jim Hanners of Louisville, KY, also saw my add in NRT and responded
with his own listing of shows.

Other letters includes those either from or to: Jim Daley of New
Eagle, PA, Andy Blatt, who lived in Staten Island, NY at the time.
I've got a Winter 1977 supplement of Radio Reruns of Redmond WA.

This is interesting, I've got a short note from Chuck Seeley of
OTRCOB of Kenmore, NY. It seems I was mentioned in the September 1978
issue of The Illustrated Press, the newsletter of the Old Time Radio
Club of Buffalo. Somebody like the quality of my tapes and the
promptness of my service.

There are a lot more letters and catalogs, I just grabbed a few. But
in looking through them, I realized that Andy Blatt and I did a lot
of trading in those early days. I remember that traded with about 12
people. We traded a lot during a 10 or 15 year period. One person
lived in Mexico and other in Canada and Ron Barnett at the time was
in the service so all I had was an APO address for him.

At the time, it felt like a small community of collectors, but we had
this common interest and I always considered them friends, even
though I had never actually met any of them until I moved to the
Washington DC area in the 80's.

Well, my wife want me to get going so we can do some shopping, so
this will have to be continued another time.

Subject: Collecting in the early days

To be truthful, I wasn't alive in the 60s, but as I understand it, it was a
great time for a few collectors, mostly the disc ones, as it was easy and
cheap to pick up transcriptions.

The bad part, even for them, technology wasn't what it was now, the
archiving media was open reel or worse yet, cassette, and a lot of people
had to make do with ancient 40s vintage transcrtiption turntables, and a
lot of bad transfers were turned out.

As far as technology, I'm glad I live in this eara - technology like CEDAR
and CEDAR-like programs give the opportunity to restore shows and
state-of-the-art transcripton turntables like the Rondine 3 give a better
dub of the shows. The archival media is digital now - no more generation
loss, the files are much easier to work with, and even share.

[removed] I do look for reels from Radio Yesteryear, though - they're generally
of decent quality and sometimes there's some offbeat stuff. Anybody have any?

Google is an amazing thing. I put in "The Untouchables Announcer"
and came up with a link to [removed] and under the cast listing was
"Les Lampson - Announcer (opening titles and credits)" ... so a
gold star goes to the right Mr. Wright for his earlier answer.
Click on Lampson's name and you get no biographical information,
but it shows that he was an actor on the Jack Benny TV program of
Feb. 4, 1962.

According to [removed] the announcer on the series was Les Lampson.

In doing a little googling I discovered that Les Lampson had been an
announcer on a Tulsa radio station in the 1950s (which establishes an OTR
connection), did some voice-over work, did some cartoon voice work and made
at least one appearance on Jack Benny's TV show. I found a uncorroborated
report that he died about 1990.

Subject: Body of water = records?

John M reminisced:

the albums by some record company I can't recall; think the corporate name
had something to do with a body of water.

Sandyhook? There was an importer in Ontario who circulated a catalogue
made up of Sandyhook Radiola and George Garabedian records. I think the
enticing "Themes like old times" albums were by Snuff Garrett.

Subject: 1939 Theme song: "Just the Way You Look Tonight"?

My brother called me last night to see if I could tell him which radio show
used "Just the Way You Look Tonight" as its theme song. This would have been
in
1939, when he was 10 years old. The show played on Sundays (in Philadelphia).

He suspects that it was Jimmie Fidler's show, and thinks the sponsor was
Jergens Lotion.

I don't remember a show with that theme. However, I've done a little Web
research, and found that Jergens sponsored Walter Winchell. Jimmie Fidler had
a
show on NBC's Red Network from 1937 to 1939 which was sponsored by Special
Drene
Shampoo. "Just the Way You Look Tonight" would make sense as a theme song,
because Fred Astaire sang it to Ginger Rogers while she was shampooing her
hair.

I'd like to know for sure that this information is correct, so I can keep my
brother believing that I have an excellent memory!

Well, that may explain the Paramount logo on the Harveytoon, but I'm still
not happy. Even if it's properly there, it's definitely NOT the way I recall
seeing it on [removed]! I have fond memories of that TV-set-as-jack-in-the-box,
with the big stylized "H" on it, and with "jack" springing out to spread
his arms and spread a folded-paper-doll-style "H A R V E Y" across the
screen, with that theme music in my ears, including the harmonious chimes
at the end.

Those were the days!

As long as I have someone knowledgeable about old cartoons available --
do you mind if I pick your brain for a moment? Dost happen to remember
a series of cartoons where the main characters were a very naive and
talkative mouse (who I'm pretty sure wore a cap) with a (non-speaking)
worm companion, who always seemed to be meeting up with a hungry owl or
similar predator? What cartoon chaaracters were they, and where might
I obtain them? I haven't seen them in [removed]
