Ted Kneebone mentions (Digest 179) Hi Brown's two NPR series in the 1980s.

It should be noted that the 26-part, half-hour "Americans All" were also
(first?) broadcast on the Voice of America on VOA's "Studio One" series.
Although I no longer have the tapes, unfortunately, here is a list of the
titles and stars.

# 1 Margaret Fuller -- Marian Seldes (10/7/84)
# 2 H. L. Mencken -- Russell Horton (10/14/84)
# 3 Emma Lazarus -- Mia Dillon (10/28/84)
# 4 Harry Houdini -- Mason Adams (11/4/84)
# 5 Prudence Crandall -- Kim Hunter (11/11/84)
# 6 Louis D. Brandeis -- Fred Gwynne (11/18/84)
# 7 Lafayette -- Lloyd Battista (11/25/84)
# 8 Albert Einstein -- Bernard Grant (12/2/84)
# 9 Robert E. Lee -- John Beale (12/9/84)
#10 Mark Twain -- Russell Horton (12/16/84)
#11 William Sydney Porter (O. Henry) (12/23/84)
#12 Harry Truman -- Earl Hammond (12/30/84)

#14 Edgar Allan Poe -- Paul Hecht (1/13/85)
#15 Harriet Beecher Stowe -- Kim Hunter (1/20/85)
#16 John Marshall -- Russell Horton (1/27/85)
#17 Abby Smith and the Cows (2/3/85)
#18 Charles Steinmetz -- Guy Sorell (2/10/85)
#19 Alexander Hamilton -- Gordon Gould (2/17/85)
#20 Clara Barton -- Marian Seldes (2/24/85)
#21 Fiorello LaGuardia -- Earl Hammond (3/3/85)
#22 Nathaniel Green -- Kevin McCarthy (3/10/85)
#23 George Washington Carver -- Arnold Moss (3/17/85)
#24 John L. Sullivan -- Fred Gwynne (3/24/85)
#25 Ulysses S. Grant -- Kevin McCarthy (3/30/85)
#26 George Washington -- Russel Horton (4/7/85)

The dates listed are for the original VOA broadcast; it sounds like the NPR
series ran a bit later.

Ah, and here I thought I was the only one! :)
For the last few weeks I've been watching the original Perry Mason
shows on [removed] From time to time an OTR actor will pop up, often
in a supporting role. Not having seen what a lot of what they look like
I listen to the voice (in fact, I listen to the show more than actually
stare at the monitor) and often surprised when the credits roll and
think "_That_ was so-and-so?"
I have some photo's of otr actors I've collected over time on a CD.
A couple of weeks ago I got a screen capture program and back up where a
otr actor was featured and grab that photo.
I can't recall the number of times the voice and face don't match up,
in that the person doesn't look like I imagine they do. :)

The reason this product had this rather unusual name is that it was
originally developed by the Pabst Brewing Company as an accompaniment to
their beer. Pabst Beer, Pabstette Cheese spread and some crackers.

Later it was purchased by Kraft who for some reason (maybe contractual) kept
the name.

Of the 1953 series, there are two distinct openings. One the organ one
is original. Was the more familiar "And [removed]" followed by the footsteps
and kettle drum done later? Also, were some of the episodes remade in the
70s? The cast seems older in "the Hangman's Rope".

Subject: Possible 1920s OTR Project?

Might there be any interest in creating a discography, as complete as
possible, of commercial recordings by American radio stars of the 1920s?

I've been thinking along these lines for at least a decade but the idea
was kick-started again just three or four days ago when I picked up, from the
Net, two 1927 Columbia sides by "The Golden Girl of WBAP." (Plus a 1926
newspaper photograph of the singer.)

Surely a lot more 1920s OTR survives than we realize. It just happens to
exist as commercial 78s rather than as actual broadcasts.

     Sincerely,

     George Wagner

In Issue #183 Frank McGurn asks about the Australian version of The Fat Man.

My understanding is that the scripts were the [removed] scripts, possibly
slightly altered. All the scripts survive in the National Film and Sound
Archives and just last week they updated their listings on this series as a
result of assisting me researching the series at the request of the Old Time
Radio Researchers group.

Kevin Brennan played Brad Runyon amd I have a list of the other cast
members.

The Transcription Discs for this series do not appear to exist in Australia.
Copies were sold back to the [removed] where it was broadcast several times and
circulating episodes come from those discs.

Subject: Himan Brown and Radio Hall of Fame

RyanO seems awfully tough on Himan Brown. Although Mr. Brown
wanted the CBSRMT on the air every night of the week to build a
listening habit among his audience, I think that might have been
one of its greatest weaknesses - along with some stories that
were real clunkers. But - like listening to a series run of an
OTR show night after night of what were weekly programs - you
begin to notice the sameness - of plots, jokes, music bridges,
etc.

I can recall Brown, on more than one occasion in interviews,
though, having an attitude of "don't look back." He would tell of
individuals or groups writing for permission to re-enact one of
his Inner Sanctum or Grand Central Station shows. I don't know if
his answers were yes or no, but he did encourage them to do
something original, quit worshipping the past.

And I take offense at Sean's belittling the selection of James
Dobson to the Radio Hall of Fame. Better Dobson than some
foul-mouthed shock jock. Even if you don't like Dobson, for
whatever reason, and though his election seems tied closer to the
daily program of "Focus on the Family," you can't disparage the
organization for the quality of its work when it comes to
"Adventures in Odyssey" and "Radio Theatre" - my only criticism
is that they think they are doing a movie and the sound effects
in stereo and the music often are much more than they need be.
