Subject: Beryl Cameron
On a recent post someone mentioned about Daryl Dragon
being the son of Carmen Dragon. I went to the site
listed to contact Daryl Dragon (the Captain of Captain
and Tenille), and sent a message to the fan club
saying that I had just listened to the Frances
Langford summer replacement shows in which Carmen
Dragon appeared and how much I enjoyed listening to
him. I received an email back from Daryl asking if I
had any information about a Ms. Beryl Cameron, with
whom his father had worked and he was wanting to
obtain some recordings of her work. Here is part of
the email he sent back to me:
The reason I'm trying to find out more about Beryl,
and trying to find some recordings of her show, is
because we actually MET MS. BERYL CAMERON on the
cruise we just returned from. I sat and talked with
Beryl for about 20 [removed] and she knew Frances
Langford, and all the other names I mentioned that
came to our home back 'then'. I promised her that I'd
try to find recordings of her shows - if they existed
(?) She thought that ONLY NBC would've had those
shows on old vinyl disks, or whatever. I searched the
net already for any hints of her name, and nothin'
came up, unfortunately. [removed] I'm thinking that
JUST MAYBE, Greg may have a lead for Beryl to find
copies of her [removed] somewhere out there (?)
We have Beryl's contact [removed] [removed] here's hopin'?
Thanks,
DARYL
I have no information on a Beryl Cameron. Does anyone
else on the list?
Thanks,

Subject: Fourth Chime
Amid recent discussion of the fouth chime, I ran a search of The New
York Times in my library's ProQuest full-text database, which returned
only one relevant hit from the Sept. 7, 1944, radio program listing:
8:30 - WEAF - Drama - The Fourth Chime,
Story of Newsmen in the War;
[removed] Kaltenborn, Robert St. John
and Others
(WEAF was, of course, NBC's flagship station in New York.)
Anyone else have any knowledge of this broadcast and how its title
relates to the recent discussion of a four-chime service cue?

Anyone have experience with OTR MP3's on an iPod?
Specs say 32 is lowest bit rate supported.
I don't know specifically about the iPod but most players give 32kbs as the
lower limit but all those I've used have been fine with the lower rates you
find in OTR. I've used Rio Volts, an Iriver MP3 CD player, an Archos HD
player, a Rio 500, a Creative Muvo, an Audible Otis, a Nex II, a Soul MP3 CD
player and there 2 or 3 others that friend's have that I know work just fine
but I forget what brands they are. All of those I've had list 32kbs as
their lower limit. I don't know about my friends' players.
The iPod might be the only one that won't but I'd be surprised.

Subject: Fibber McGee and Molly Christmas Album
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I'm putting together a radio program of seldom-heard Christmas songs of
the 20th century, and I'd like to see if anybody can help me obtain a
recording date.
It is for Fibber McGee and Molly's album "On the Night Before Christmas"
on the Capitol Criterion label, recorded on 3 10" 78 RPM discs. It is
album catalog #CC-20, and each record bears disc numbers 10041, 10042,
and 10043. In the run-out groove is embossed CAP - 716 - 2A, but I am
not sure if this is a matrix, as it appears on all three records, and
only on side 1 of each record.
FM&M broadcast this song on their Christmas program of Dec 19, 1944 and
did it virtually every year through the balance of the 1940's. This
album runs approximately 24 minutes in total, with storyline by Don
Quinn and all dialogue by Jim and Marion (and of course Teeny) wrapped
around Ken Darby's song performed by Billy Mills and His Orchestra. It
is noted in the liner notes this was Fibber McGee and Molly's first
album.
A friend of mine who runs a record store (yes, RECORDS--not a CD in
sight!) says Capitol's recording dates are very difficult to pin down.
He thinks it was 1947, based on the record disc number.
I am playing each song (or album, in this case) in the order in which
Christmas year the listener would hear it, so if I have the recording
and/or release date for this album, I know to which Christmas season it
belongs. Personally I can't believe this would not go unrecorded for
several years before it was pressed to disc, given the popularity of
FM&M at that time, but stranger things have happened in the recording
[removed]
Any info from anybody would help.
Merry Christmas!

I hate to descend into complete, 100% nerd-dom right
here in full public view, but to the extent it might
be important to know what type of chime was actually
used: the D-Day four-chime pitches are
unquestionably, without a doubt B-D-G-G, just
bordering on a half-step higher. Even accounting for
tape or machine speed variations that would raise or
lower the pitches, the interval would still be
Mi-So-Do (not So-Fa-Do), no matter the key. In
addition to being an OTR geek, I'm also a musician
blessed/cursed with perfect pitch, so God force me to
listen to 100 "Bulldog Drummond" episodes if I'm

Try plunking the notes out on a piano, or comparing
the chime tones to the tune "Over There"--it's
identical. Here's a link to what we're talking about,
