CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 24
It's Bob Hope's 1st Pepsodent Show & Maxwell House Coffee Time with
Francis Langford
From 1938, the year of the debut of "Thanks for the Memory," in the
film "The Big Broadcast of 1938" we hear highlights of Bob's first
broadcast for Pepsodent. Skinnay Ennis sings "Change Partners," and
actress Constance Bennett drops by with quips about Charlie McCarthy.
(Later in the 1940's, Constance was to be honored by the armed forces
for her post war entertainment of troops stationed in Europe.) Bob plays
a "tough" detective in the "Tisket Tasket, Yellow Basket" case mystery.
Following Bob's "Thanks for the Memory" theme comes the "Burns & Allen"
1947 NBC summer replacement "Maxwell House Coffee Time with Francis
Langford." Conductor for "Coffee Time" was Carmen Dragon who also
conducted on radio shows like the "Railroad Hour and produced the most
widely used symphonic arrangement of "America, the Beautiful." Francis
Langford was known as the "Sweetheart of the Fighting Front," and her
sponsor Maxwell House Coffee billed her show as "Part of the American
Scene," which was part of an ad campaign done beautifully in 1947 with
paintings of vacation spots in the USA. Maxwell House's commercials were
skillfully and tastefully integrated into the music of the program,
embellished by Carmen Dragon's skillful arranging with his 25 piece
orchestra. Take special note of the clever commercials, as announcer
Tobe Reed softly compares the melodic blending of musical composition
and orchestral scoring of instruments to the creative blending of
Maxwell House coffee production. "Coffee Time" was well-written,
wholesome, patriotic, light, amusing, and excellently directed, scored,
and performed: truly "a collectable gem from The Golden Age of American
Radio." Even the show's theme was gentle and soothing: "Let's Have
Another Cup of Coffee." Francis sings great songs like "It's a Good
Day," "Carolina in the Morning," and "The Best Things in Life Are Free."
Legendary Ladies
Francis Langford was a legendary singer, and we continue now with a
few more legendary ladies of song, ladies like Margaret Whiting, Martha
Tilton, Helen Forrest, and more. And I include a mystery gal who sang on
Ben Bernie's radio show and then with Xavier Cugat for a time. But she
failed in auditions for Benny Goodman and also the Dorseys. She went on
her own to become a star on radio, TV, in movies, and on great
recordings. Radio show spotlights included those with Eddie Cantor and
Paul Whiteman. She was once introduced on radio as the singer "who
lights a fire by rubbing 2 notes together." DJ Martin Block was
responsible -- by chance -- for her stage name as we know it, which was
the title of a hit recording she often sang at auditions. "TV Guide"
ranked her at number 16 on its top 50 TV stars ever. She sings here her
1942 hit recording, "Blues in the Night," which was on "Your Hit Parade"
for 13 weeks, 2 at number 1. So now can you name this wonderful
energetic performer (who was also a pretty fair golfer and talk show host)?
