Subject: Choose a Song Partner and ladies unmentionables
I just obtained five discs (10 shows) of a series I'm hoping to post on my
otr blog in the next few weeks. I try to research shows and put what info
I can on them or at least the performers, but I'm turning up empty on this
one. Anyone have some additional data they can share?
The show is called "Pick a Song Partner" and features Beryl Vaughn and Don
Moreland with organist Adele Scott. The concept is pretty simple - Beryl
gives humorous "clues" on songs and Don sings them. Based on the songs
I'm hearing and references, it may have been done as early as 1947.
Anyone have some more info on the show or performers? I found a listing
for Beryl in the IMDB; she appeared in a bit part in "Penny Serenade" and
played a part on "Sky King" on tv. For Don, he appeared in "Dubarry Was a
Lady" as part of a vocal group and was apparently active in Chicago radio.
I'm not sure if it will help with the dating, but the matrix number for
the program 1 disc I have is YTC 4723 and it was pressed by Columbia.
The show is from Eugenia Price Productions - Eugenia had a career in radio
and later as an author and was one of the main figures behind the
long-running series "Unshackled!", according to Wikipedia.
The other thing that's unusual about this show are the commercials - it's
sponsored by Free Form Bras. In all my years of collecting and listing to
radio shows, I can't think of any other advertising ladies undergarments.

Subject: Gangbusters shows
the other day "RyanO" was looking for two Gangbusters shows. From searching
RadioGoldIndex, it seems like they are:
91305. Gangbusters. March 20, 1942. Blue Network. "The Case Of The
Black Bottom Bandit". Sponsored by: Sloane's Linament. The story is
also known as, "The Case Of Earl Joiner." "The gay young southern
killer who wed two [removed] machine gun and a clarinet." The story
of a musical bank robber. gangbusters Nationwide Clues have been
deleted. Norman Schwarzkopf (host), Frank Gallop (announcer). 26:52.
Audio condition: Excellent. Incomplete.
11845. Gangbusters. August 28, 1948. Program #544. ABC net origination,
syndicated, WRVR-FM, New York rebroadcast. "The Case Of The Cowboy
Killers". Sponsored by: Arrow Audio. Four bad-guys wear their guns on
the hips. WRVR rebroadcast date: March 28, 1974. . 1/2 hour. Audio
condition: Excellent. Complete.
I don't have them. If anyone does, it would be appreciated if they could be
posted somewhere such as YouSendIt or another service.
Thanks!!

Subject: Fred Allen letters
Ben Ohmart asked re sources for the letters of Fred Allen. Ben mentioned
Boston Public Library is one such source. Possibly you meant the Mugar
Special Collections library at Boston University.
Ben, please see the acknowledgments pages in my book, WORDS AT War (Scarecrow
Press) about World War II era radio for the names of most of the major
special collections libraries that house OTR collections. Besides BU, there
are the University of Wyoming, the Wisconsin Historical Society, Columbia
University etc.
I spent eight years researching my book, so I made extensive use of a wide
range of such libraries.
Knowing Ben, I suspect he may have already checked these sources as well as
consulting the Siegel's excellent reference work re libraries etc. having OTR
collections.

Does anyone have a definitive listing of the Our Miss Brooks programs? And,
are they all available? The most I have seen on DVDs/CDs for sale are 103
programs.

Subject: Gang Busters
RyanO asked about two episodes, one of which he had no title or airdate.
Hopefully the info below will help:
1. The Case of the Cowboy Killers: Gangsters hold up a series of bars in one
night, staying just ahead of the cops.
The date is August 28, 1948.
2. Not sure of the title of this one, but its about a bandit who plays the
jazz clarinet as a hobby. He ends up in a battle with police and hides in a
pig pin trough, but dies there because of infected bullet wounds.
The episode is "The Case of the Black Bottom Bandit," also titled "The Case
of Earl Joiner."
Broadcast March 20, 1942.

Subject: Harry Bartell and Amos n' Andy
I recently purchased issue #79 of FILMFAX magazine, June/July 2000 issue. It
features an article about the Amos n' Andy television program, and part one
of a two-part interview with Harry Bartell. The interview is great because
Bartell talks a lot about being on radio. The second part of the interview
(which I already had) extends into issue #80. In the second part, Bartell
comments about doing a recreation of ESCAPE at the Friends of Old-Time Radio
Convention and then commented that "A Shipment of Mute Fate" was his favorite
of the series. He thought he only did a couple, but a kind-hearted vendor who
had done an episode guide and log on ESCAPE, gave Bartell's daughter a
freebee and apparently that evening, in the hotel room, Bartell looked it
over and realized that he did A TON of ESCAPE episodes, not just a couple.
Though he didn't comment what vendor gave his daughter the log, I theorize
that Terry Salomonson probably did because he's know for giving stuff like
that, and I don't recall anyone else having an ESCAPE log done or at FOTR.
While Bartell may not have given a "thank you" to Terry personally, he did
acknowledge the gift in the interview.
Oh, shameless plug, sorry. The same issue features a brief interview with
Margaret Kerry, one of the Little Rascals (Our Gang member) who also modeled
for Disney's Tinkerbell. I got a kick out of the interview because she's
going to be at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in Aberdeen, Maryland,
and she'll be doing a radio recreation on stage during the Saturday night
banquet. ([removed])

Subject: calling raw aluminum experts
I finally got around to getting the custom stylus to do some 1932-34 raw
aluminums I have. I've done oodles and oodles of other type of
transcriptions of all sizes, but I've only done a small handful of raw
aluminum, and I'd like to get a refresher course.
I remember that they were to be tracked much lighter, and one has to
babysit them to make sure the groove doesn't stick.
My main question is per cleaning and prepping raw aluminum. I think I
remember that a soapy mixture was not appropriate for them? What's the
best way to clean them?
Thanks,
Travis
