X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Joe Postove asked: "My question is what did CBS program in the Benny slot
between 5/22/55 and
the return of reruns on 10/28/56?" and?"OK, last question? Was the Jack Benny
radio program ever syndicated
nationally?"

It's late and I'm too tired to check but wasn't THE STAN FREBERG SHOW the
initial replacement for THE JACK BENNY SHOW before the reruns?

As to whether Jack's show in reruns was ever syndicated nationally, if you
really mean EVER, then the answer is yes. I heard an episode on the air
locally just last week! (Missed it yesterday).

Subject: Re: Jack Benny between the new and the reruns

Joe Postove asked about what was programmed in Jack Benny's Sunday night
time slot of 7:00-7:30 when he was not on the air

My question is what did CBS program in the Benny slot between 5/22/55 and
the return of reruns on 10/28/56? And I'm assuming that CBS continued to
program the 7-7:30pm slot on Sunday's after Jack's departure in 1958, so
does anyone know what was heard then, and for how long? I'm also curious as
to how long CBS continued to program that hallowed half hour.

I can answer most of this question. I just got through checking the NY
Times radio schedules for the periods in question;

Before reruns return on 10/28/56

May 29, 1955 - Sep 18, 1955: Juke Box Jury

Sep 25, 1955 - Jan 8, 1956: Larry Le Sueur

Jan 15, 1956 - July 1, 1956: 7:00 news report - 7:05 Edgar Bergen

July 8, 1956 - Sep 30, 1956: 7:00 news report - 7:05 Mitch Miller Show

Oct 7, 1956 - Oct 21, 1956: Our Miss Brooks

After Benny reruns ended 6/22/1958 [NY Times schedule still lists Benny on
6/29/1958]

July 6, 1958 - Nov 16, 1958: 7:00 News 7:05 Frontier Gentleman

Nov 23, 1958 - Jan 4, 1959: 7:00 News 7:05 Indictment

I stopped at Jan 4, 1959 - listings become harder to find

I just learned today that my old friend, Charles Stumpf, died late last
month. I was shocked and sorry to hear this. He was 79, and contributed a Lot
to the wealth of radio knowledge, especially Fibber McGee. His Heavenly Days
is still the best on the subject, I think. He'll be missed. He gave me a lot
of encouragement early on when I started BearManor Media. We had a lot of
talks on the phone, and I visited him eagerly in Hazleton, PA, where he has
died. I'm sorry I don't have family contact to give out to those of you who
want to send them good wishes, but say a prayer for him, and remember him.

Subject: Benny for your thoughts

Joe Postove posts:

My question is what did CBS program in the Benny slot between 5/22/55 and
the return of reruns on 10/28/56?

Would you believe it was Peter Potter's Juke Box Jury? It ran for an hour
at 7 o'clock starting 5/29/55 (thanks once more to JJ's radio log website),
although at some point it was shortened to a half-hour at 7:30 and replaced
by Our Miss Brooks, still airing at 7 up until the Benny reruns began
10/28/56.

I'm assuming that CBS continued to
program the 7-7:30pm slot on Sundays after Jack's departure in 1958, so
does anyone know what was heard then, and for how long?

Frontier Gentleman replaced Benny effective 7/6/58. Within a short while it
was reduced to a 25-minute feature at 7:05, preceded by five minutes Richard
C. Hottelet's news and commentary, a kind of trending at CBS in that epoch.

Finally, our pal Joe observes:

I'm also curious as
to how long CBS continued to program that hallowed half hour.

It appears that CBS continued to offer a lineup of programming through the
weekend following "the day radio drama died" Nov. 25, 1960. That weekend,
Nov. 26-27, the net banished more of the final vestiges of its longstanding
features to the Valhalla of Relics. On Sunday, Dec. 4, 1960, most of the
hour that had -- a week before -- been filled by Mitch Miller was returned
to local stations for their own DJs, news, sports and other entertainment.
If we didn't know by then that something dreadful had happened, the
transfusion was almost enough to kill us.

Was the Jack Benny radio program ever syndicated nationally?

I can't be sure about that, Joe, but certainly Laura Leff can.

Subject: Lone Ranger recordings

I am presently compiling a list of the "official" lost episodes of THE LONE
RANGER radio program for a number of web-sites. The following is a list of
recordings I presently "classify" as lost. If anyone has any of these, can
they please drop me a line?

Two notes: 1. This is just a partial list of what I am seeking for the
purpose of (hopefully) scratching them off the list so please don't accept
the list below as the complete "lost" list. I'll post that shortly. 2. if you
do have any of these episodes, I will need a copy to listen to for
verification. Any format will do. Way too many episodes have been floating
about in circulation with the incorrect titles and airdates, which is why I
need to hear them to verify.

Subject: phil, and alice

Listened to the tail end of a Phil Harris/Alice Faye episode on Sirius
radio today, and what I heard of it was one of the funniest episodes I have
ever heard from that show. The date of the episode was sometime in October,
1950, and besides the usual star's, Sidney Sheldon was in the cast playing
his usual great shyster bit. It was when the program was without a sponsor,
and evidently they were in the negotiating phase with RCA at the time. I got
home, and immediately logged onto my computer looking for that episode,
and lo, and behold. It is no where to be found. I checked all of my usual
reliable sources, and nothing. I Googled the Phil, and Alice show, and found
the program on a CD set from Radio Spirits.

My Question is. Does Radio Spirits own that complete block of Phil, and
Alice show's, because there are very few 1950 episodes available any place
that I could fine. It seems that period when they returned form summer
vacation, and were sustained while in the negotiations with RCA, that those
shows
for the most part just are not available any place except at Radio Spirits.

Does anyone know why this is?

Charlie
