Subject: Walter Winchell
There is a story about Walter Winchell saying something to the affect of:
"If you have a son in Korea, write to him. If you have a son in the 2nd
Division, pray for him."
First, is this true?
Second, if true, has anyone a recording of him saying that?
I am currently in discussions to be the new webmaster of the 2nd Infantry
Division Association (having served in the 2ID some many years ago) and my
'proposal' would do much better with that sound-byte embedded in it. Thanks
in advance to any and all who can help.

Subject: Jack Benny's moves
The mention in the OTR Digest that Steve Martin lists Jack Benny as
being a mentor he never met brings to mind Kelsey Grammer, who played
Frasier Crane on the popular TV series "Frasier." Reruns of this show
are airing nightly, and the more I watch them the more I see Kelsey
using some classic Jack Benny "takes," including the famous hand on
the cheek and deadpan stare. In fact, once you notice this, you will
see several other Benny moves as well. Granted, as an actor Kelsey
has his own bag of tricks, but several of his key reactions are so
clearly based on our old radio friend Mr. Benny that it's worth
noting here. Kelsey had a lot of success with his adaptation of
Benny's moves; his series won an incredible 37 Emmys and he was the
highest-paid actor in television, earning $[removed] million per episode.
I am wondering if Digest readers know of any other actors/actresses
who copied the moves or expressions of radio greats?
[ADMINISTRIVIA: Grammer has made no secret of his admiration for Benny;
indeed, in 1995 he hosted the tribute special "Kelsey Grammer Salutes Jack
Benny," which included the indulgance of Grammer "working" with Benny through
digital technology. --cfs3]

Subject: Dragnet on TV
When Dragnet series was finished with network TV, and went into reruns
it was renamed "Badge 714". and Dragnet was not mentioned at all. The
same music with multi sponsors. I assume it was syndicated. It was on
Chicago TV every night don't remember the channel.

Subject: Re: Fountain of Fun
An episode of Fountain of Fun (broadcast on WLW Cincinnati) was
recently broadcast on Jerry Haendiges' OTR program. He gave a
date of 42-12-20 and said the show was only broadcast 12 times
and all were in 1942. ... On the episode, someone says it is the
19th of December. I have also seen this episode dated as
43-12-19. Does anyone know if Fountain of Fun was broadcast in
December 1943 and/or what day of the week the program aired
in 1942 or 1943?
Did a cursory search of the usual newspaper databases and found:
"Fountain of Fun" was scheduled to air Sunday, 20 December 1942,
according to the radio listings in the 19 December Piqua (OH) Daily
Call.
About a year later, "Fountain of Fun" was scheduled to air Sunday, 19
December 1943, according to that day's Coshocton (OH) Tribune.
Of course, you can't always believe everything you read in the
newspapers. See the recent Empire Builders posts, for example.
