Subject: Nostalgia Digest for Spring 2012

Frank Absher's "shameless plug" (his words) for his book was too modest to
mention that his piece, "Memories of a Boy Broadcaster" can be found in the
new Spring 2012 issue of Nostalgia Digest. In addition, the Spring issue
includes Martin Grams Jr. and his examination of the radio version of "Have
Gun Will Travel" in addition to a cover story about the "Road" movies and an
article about the early years of Little Orphan Annie. (And of course, it
includes the schedule for our two old-time radio shows, "Those Were the Days"
and "Radio's Golden Age.") The Digest is available in a few hundred stores
but you can learn more at [removed].

Glad to hear news of the demise of audio theatre appreciation in NJ
was premature. Kudos to Steve and everyone for stepping up to the
plate. Too bad you were unable to find a better hotel than the
Ramada, but then Newark itself is hopeless apart from the Ironbound
restaurants.

I've just noticed that the Wikipedia article on the Lone Ranger gives
his name as John Francis Reid and his brother's name as Captain Daniel
Steven Reid. Anybody know where the middle names came from?

Now that we've figured out where the story of the Lone Ranger's first

Preston's first name was William? Was it ever mentioned on the radio or
TV show? I'm under the impression that it wasn't.

Subject: Bob Hancik passed away today

Many in the OTR community knew my friend Bob Hancik of Bethlehem PA. Bob was
known in many OTR Internet circles. A radio engineer for 28 years at
WRRS/RadPrin, a Lehigh Valley radio reading service for the print-handicapped
since its beginnng in 1981 until its demise in 2009, Bob was always an
inspiration to me, and began my interest in ernest in vintage radio programs,
and, as Mr. Salomonson called it many years ago, "the hobby".

Blind since birth, Bob still managed to run RadPrin with his old friend Tom
Eberts, the station manager, also blind since birth. Between the two of
them, they knew every square inch of the studio, handled the volunteer
readers, and provided an invaluable service to those who did not have access
to the print media for nearly three decades. When I thought I was having a
bad day at work, I thought of Bob and Tom, and could not fathom just how
THEIR day was going, every day, and the obstacles they overcame doing their
job. My problem, whatever it was, would become trivial.

I know many will miss Bob. I know I will. I've just lost my best friend.

1933 Eight days after he was inaugurated, [removed] President Franklin
Delano Roosevelt presented his first presidential address to the nation.
It was the first of what were called Roosevelt's famous Fireside Chats.
The name, incidentally, was coined by newsman, Robert Trout. He thought
that the President sounded as if he was sitting with us in living rooms
all over the nation next to a roaring fire, just telling it like it was.

3/13

1923 A great improvement in radio receivers was advertised. The new
models had a concealed speaker and eliminated the need for headphones,
which were considered a nuisance because they were so heavy to wear and
messed up hairdos. The new radios were also said to have a 'foolproof'
design.

3/14

1937 Fred Allen and Jack Benny met in one of the biggest publicity
gags ever. It was called, "The Battle of the Century." The two
comedians locked horns in the ballroom of the Hotel Pierre, exchanging
torrid insults that were heard by the second largest audience in the
history of radio.

3/17

1933 Comedian Phil Baker was heard on network radio for the first time
on a regular basis when The Armour Jester was heard on the Blue network.
Baker rapidly rose to the top of the radio ratings.

About the Book
The macabre world of monsters, killers on the loose and revenge from beyond
the grave existed not only in the movies, but also on the radio before
television's dominance in American homes. One of many distinct genres born of
early broadcasting, horror radio thrilled millions. Creeping out of the
speaker night after night came stories that chilled the listening
public--everything from creature features to sophisticated noir suspense. So
eager were
Americans to be scared that nearly 80 horror programs aired every week in the
late 1940s.

This first full-length study of golden age horror radio focuses on six
representative programs, starting with The Witch's Tale in 1931 and ending
with
The Mysterious Traveler in 1952. Each chapter provides the reader with a
critically and historically informed study of one series. The book ends with
a
look at the demise of horror radio and its influence. Photographs are a
delightful revelation, revealing the previously unseen (but much heard) work
of
stars like Agnes Moorehead and Orson Welles as they broadcast famous tales
of terror.

Subject: Fred Foy interview

Some time ago there was a lengthy interview with Fred Foy somewhere
online, probably youtube. It was about 2 hours long IIRC.

I can't find it now. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks. I mean, Hi Yo Silver!
