Perhaps we can site the WEAF--Queensboro Corporation blurb as the first
commercial that was PAID FOR, rather than a co-op deal (loaned records for a
mention of the record shop, etc.)
Incidentally I grew up in Jackson Heights which ironically turned into quite a
neighborhood for early radio performers.
Tony Wons, for one. BILL KNOWLTON

Subject: Wall St Journal story about Komodo Dragons
The Wall Street Journal has an article today [removed] " When Good Lizards
Go Bad: Komodo Dragons Take Violent Turn"
(the article may require subscription but you can try
[removed] )
As soon as I saw what this story was about, of course my first thought was
[removed] & RAY!
I did find the routine here: [removed]~[removed]
and in audio here [removed]
When I started collecting, I was too young to have heard of Bob & Ray or see
them on television. My first taste of their marvelous grand buffet of
understated humor was the LP from their Broadway show. In 1975-1976, a
collector, Bob Blume of Seattle, asked me to record some of their shows from
WOR radio in New York City. Many of the recordings from this era originate
from me, and my Sony TC-280 reel-to-reel. I wish I had been more diligent
about it, in retrospect.

Subject: The disguised Lone Ranger
Joseph Ross cited a particular Lone Ranger episode, one mentioned by Jim
Harmon as well, in which he is recognized by someone other than a close
associate. The episode is, "A Look To the Future", Jan. 4, 1950. In it,
the Lone Ranger, attempting to infiltrate Ace Perigon's gang, is captured by
Perigon's men just after completing a disguise but before re-donning his
mask. Taken before the leader, he notices another gang member, a new man
named Martin, who looks familiar. Perigon decides to test Martin and get
rid of the Lone Ranger at the same time by having Martin shoot the Ranger
with his own bullets. As they march to the edge of a cliff, the Ranger
tells Martin he used to know him. Martin, surprised, says he never forgets
a face. The Ranger replies that he's in disguise, whatever that means.
It's a little like when Superman puts on his glasses and no one notices the
remarkable resemblance to Clark Kent. Anyhow, the Ranger goes on to tell
Martin they used to be good friends. Only then does the man, who is
actually a federal agent who has infiltrated the gang himself, remember who
he's talking to - "a Texas Ranger by the name of Reid!". There follows a
long conversation which certainly taxes the patience of Perigon, who is just
out of earshot. Of course, Martin gets killed in the end so he can't wander
around the West the only man outside of a few anointed ones who knows the
Ranger's identity. It's a good episode though.

Subject: Re: Recent Listening
Hi,
May I ask you if the shows you mention, particularly
'One Night Stand', are available on the web? [removed]
has a fairly decent collection of band remotes, but I
didn't/haven't seen the Charlie Ventura program.
Any help appreciated,
