Subject: The Pleasures of Listening
I've agreed to do a 90-minute presentation I'm calling "The Pleasures of
Listening." In it I plan to play excerpts of programs that demonstrate
imaginative use of sound (not just sound _effects_). I'm requesting some
suggestions for excerpts of shows I might use. To get you started, here are a
few of the bits I'm thinking of using.
For sophisticated use of sound effects, one early Dragnet episode in which
the scene begins in the interrogation room, and, as if using an audio
"steadycam," it moves to the squad room, down the stairs to the motor pool,
into a car, driving through the city, then jumping out of the car, down into
a subway, where a train comes along and hits the suspect being chased. This
is all in one unbroken "shot," as it were.
Any number of Gunsmoke episodes, obviously. Any specific ideas?
The Escape episode Three Skeleton Key, with the men racing up and down the
steps, including the eerie sound of the thousands of rats.
Then, there are minimalist effects. The Lights Out episode where a man wills
himself to walk through a wall, but gets stuck in the middle, and we hear his
muffled voice calling for rescue. Or another Lights Out, The Dark, the famous
one where a man gets turned inside-out (to the sound of a rubber glove). Or
the really creepy X-minus One episode (or was it Dimension X?), Knock, that
is just the sound of a child knocking on the attic door, calling for her
parents. That one's really scary. Or the Thing on the Fourble Board from
Quiet Please, just the sound of creature from Down There.
Then there's comedy. McGee's closet, of course. But also jokes that just
wouldn't work visually. For example, from Jack Benny:
Jack: Isn't that a new tie Dennis?
Dennis: Yeah, my mother made it for me.
Jack: But what are those things sticking out the side?
Dennis: She started to make a sweater and changed her mind.
Another one I'm thinking of using is the Theater Five episode In Absence of
All Intelligent Life, where astronauts land on a distant planet, only to find
evidence of a civilization that destroyed itself. Then, on the last line of
the show, we find that the planet is Earth. (Could only work on radio.)
Anyway, you get the idea. Maybe there's a scene or two that don't use any
sound effects at all, but just the power of words and acting that create a
vivid picture.
I have plenty of time to do this. It's not really until September. But I
thought it might be fun anyway to exchange some of our favorite OTR moments
in sound, and also help me out a little in the process.
Alan
