Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!

A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Charlie Chan

Issue #51 of SCARLET STREET MAGAZINE featured a lengthy article about the
censorship of the Charlie Chan movies. About two years ago the Fox Movie
Channel began playing Charlie Chan films, one every weekend night for a few
weeks and as a result, the airings prompted controversy (a small
controversy) and Fox agreed to remove the Chan films from their lineup.
Turner Entertainment, more importantly the staff at Turner Classic Movies,
thankfully, feel that a movie is just that - a movie. And the films
controlled by Turner Entertainment (circa 1944 - 1949) are occassionally
played on the TCM network.

Fox thankfully began releasing their Chan films to DVD (the first four Mr.
Moto movies (of which there were eight) will be released in a couple weeks)
and Fox has announced they plan to release more Chans in the coming months.
The author of the SCARLET STREET article actually had a first-hand account
of the events leading to the censorship of the movies (even pointing out
that Charlie Chan was a Honolulu detective - making him American by
nationality) and is recommended for further reading. [removed]

Subject: Jack Webb

According to everything I have read, Mr Webb had both a good sense of humor
and less reverence about himself than many actors. He appeared on the
Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and the two of them did a now-famous bit of
patter based on a Dragnet parody. In addition to his other talents, Jack
Webb could apparently speak quite a bit faster than most mortals. I didn't
see this show, but I believe that it is available on videotapes of famous
Tonight shows.

First, I have recently started reading reprints of a comic called "The
Spirit" by Will Eisner and have become intrigued by both the character
and its seemingly rich history.

Rich indeed - in all ways.
I envy you, Randy; you are just beginning to taste one of the genuine Fine
Wines of the graphic storytelling vineyard.

I stumbled across some data that tells me of a short-lived radio
show based on the comic that appeared on, I think, WOR radio from New
York in the 1940s. Anyone know of exisiting copies of this series
that I could obtain?

First I've heard of such a thing (though hasn't there been a rumor before,
of such a small-scale Phantom series? And, of course, there was the Doc
Savage.

Anyone nail this down? (Anthony [removed])

Here's to Denny Colt, and to the memory of his grand "father," Will (a gent,
as well as a talent)!
