The basic commercial for the Shake-Up Mug in the radio show was
extremely long, possibly the longest Ovaltine commercial ever
aired on the show. As a child, the length of that commercial grated
on me, no matter how enthusiastic Don Gordon was in presenting it.
I thought that Don Gordon was the Chicago announcer for the Skelly version of
Captain Midnight. It was my understanding that Pierre Andre, the spokesperson
for Ovaltine during its Little Orphan Annie days continued in that role as
Captain Midnight began is sponsor relationship with Ovaltine?
Did Gordon return later?

In the 1930's our pantry had many boxes full of Wheaies, Purina etc with no
box tops. I wouldn't touch the stuff then or [removed] also had containers of
Ovaltine untouched, just sitting there. But I had the decoder badge, hand
cuffs whistling ring and the green finger that told the world I had "The

In the early 70's in The Chicago area Chuck Schaden started his Saturday 4
hour OTR program "Those were the days" in about 1974 or 5 Chuck had a
contest to identify the name of some radio show or an actor. So I called in
with the correct answer. I got a Jar of Ovaltine
the last time in the world I wanted. It was sent to me from the factory
located in Broadview, Illinois, a suburb about 10 or 12 miles west of
Chicago.
I told my kids about OTR and Little Orphan Annie and Ovatine. They tried it
and didn't like either. After knowing wife for over 20 years, at that time,
I was suppressed, she loved Ovaltine and buys it once in while these [removed]

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone could help me track down a recording of Edwin C.
Hill's annual Thanksgiving radio broadcast (circa 1940s-50s). Any
suggestions or hints would be greatly appreciated.
Much thanks,
Anne Cullen

With the many postings about the availability of 'Lum and Abner'
broadcasts, I thought I'd point out that Terry Salomonson is making available
just about all existing L & A broadcasts on a monthly basis through his 'Audio
Classic Archives' ([removed]<[removed];) .
He has worked his way through the year 1942 and more will most certainly
follow.

Subject: 1st show and 1/2 shows on 16in discs
In doing some reading on early Rhythm and Blues artists I've run across a
mention of the "first all black radio program for the Mutual Broadcasting
System in Los Angeles."
Anyone know what this program was called and if there are any surviving
broadcasts of this?
hi
i can't help out on this question, i don't believe, i do however have 2 afrs discs
with programing called "harlem hospitality club" i have never seen mention of
this prog anywhere, never have i seen any shows of it anywhere.
it's a typical black musical show of the 40's, there are many others like it around
but it's enjoyable as are the others
i have never put it out as i would like to get my money back for what i pd for it
anyway,
- -------------------
i once mentioned 16in disc 1/2 shows, i have some and i am sure ther are others
out there who have the same
once again if you would email me what you have i will keep the list and try to match
up halfs if ever they show up.
you have nothing to lose but some time invested in writing up the list
shall we try again?

To add to a probable avalanche of letters, with one from Anthony Tollin on
top, the adversarial character on The Shadow radio series (and pulp magazine
novels and comics) was NOT "Lt." Weston, but Police Commissioner Weston. It
is hard to understand how anyone could try to analyze the changing
relationship between he and The Shadow over several programs and fail to
remember his rank.

If I may, I'd like to endorse Popeye's favorite energy booster second
to spinach: Wheatena.
I like Wheatena, too, but what does it have to do with Popeye?

Subject: RADIO RECALL Highlights
The April issue of RADIO RECALL is enroute back from the printer and
will soon be mailed to all paid subscribers. This issue marks the
return of two highly respected OTR researchers: Stewart Wright and Karl
Schadow. Stewart's detailed article chronicles the practice of reusing
scripts in the Golden Age of Radio and he cites dozens of shows that
were recycled in other series. He provides dates, titles, and cast
changes for these shows, including some very unlikely ones, [removed] a
"Voyage of the Scarlet Queen" episode that was later converted into a
case for Johnny Dollar.
Karl delves into the background of Mutual's magnificent failure to
crack the soap opera market held by CBS and NBC by creating four
sustainers in WW II, all produced by different Mutual affiliates. He
reveals the complete story on these women's drama dailies: "We Are
Always Young" (WOR, New York), "Edith Adams' Future" (WKRC,
Cincinnati), "Helen Holden, Government Girl" (WOL, Washington, DC) and
"I'll Find My Way" (WGR/WKBW, Buffalo.) Karl includes identities of
cast and crew, plus some plot summaries.
Also in this issue, Jim Cox's latest book, "Historical Dictionary of
American Radio Soap Operas" is reviewed by Maury Cagle, a former AFRS
announcer. In addition, there is a collection of memories from those
who were on the B-Bar-B Ranch at WOL with Don Knotts when he was
playing "Windy Wales," an OTR crostic-puzzle by quizmaster Adam
Roslewics of Washington, NJ, as well as a brief summary of the
respected radio/TV series, "The Eternal Light."
