Subject: What do we call them?
Those on-stage radio shows we do at conventions - there really isn't a good
name for them.
I generally use "re-creation." I guess technically there shouldn't be a
hyphen there, but if you write "recreation" it sounds like phys ed class or
playing outdoors.
Derek's "reec" isn't bad, but its homonym is.
When I try to come up with a better term, I draw a blank.
Anyone?
---Dan Hughes, [removed]
[ADMINISTRIVIA: For my personal usage, those with complete or almost complete
original casts are "recreations;" and those are practically impossible today.
The usual today, with few or no original stars, are "performances." Works for
me, your mileage may vary. --cfs3]

Subject: OTR type broadcasts today
Stephen A. Kallis, Jr., responding to my comments about contemporary OTR
style adventures, said,
I won't comment much on the reference to Captain Midnight Decoder Rings
other than to say that no OTR show ever offered a Decoder Ring as a premium.
Which is why I specifically said "decoder wheel."
He also said,
he objection to older comedies, though, is valid. A lot of the comments on
the Fred Allen show related to then-current events.
True. As I pointed out myself, Jack Benny's show is more "evergreen" in that
Jack's humor doesn't involve topical references to the same extent that
Fred's does.
On the other hand, a windbag character like Sen. Claghorn could still work
today. Of course, if anyone did Sen. Claghorn today, a lot of people would
assume he's a Foghorn Leghorn take-off instead of the other way around. And
that, I say that's an outrage.
Some older OTR comedies may not appeal to the masses today, but that doesn't
mean elements from them couldn't work in a contemporary audio comedy series.
Myself, I don't have much use for TV sitcoms. In some cases when I've watched
an episode of one, the plot will be one I've heard on a radio show. And
usually it was funnier on the radio show.
Stephen A. Kallis, Jr. also said,
One thing that radio drama has that other kinds of contemporary
entertainment doesn't is the ability for any audience member to multitask.
To some degree that's true. You can't, say, read a book while watching a well
written and well acted TV show. TV is a visual medium, and with good TV shows
it's not enough to just listen to the dialogue. On the other hand, that
doesn't necessarily mean you can read a book while listening to a well
written and well acted radio show and expect to get the most out of the radio
show. A key bit of dialogue may slip past you while you're reading your book.
So it's a question of the nature of the multitasking, not so much that anyone
can do anything else while listening to a radio show.

Subject: Paul Frees and a call for cleverness
Greetings. Voice actor Fred (son of Paul) Frees and I are working on an album
idea: a sequel to his father's Paul Frees and the Poster People album, in
which he will sing popular songs in the style of celebrities. We'd like your
help for ideas. Especially weird (young Brando singing "Bicycle Race") or
perfect (Curly singing "Stuck in the Middle with You") ideas. Feel free to
email your notions me offlist. But first, a few stipulations:
1. The voice imitated must be deceased. This is what Paul did on his album.
2. We're seeking more known voices and songs; not things that would be rather
obscure to the average listener, like Billy Halop singing Streisand's
"Superman".
3. We can't use everything. There aren't many slots available. And Fred can't
imitate everyone, either. All ideas submitted become our property.
4. When you send your ideas, please let me know where you found out about
this query - Facebook, OTR digest, the BearManor mailing list, etc.
If we use your idea, you get a free copy of the CD, signed by Fred Frees, and
a free copy of the 2nd edition of my Paul Frees biography, which will be out
before Christmas. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Subject: Lone Ranger additional voices
On occasion, I've heard John Todd portray characters other than Tonto on "The
Lone Ranger." Were there ever occasions where Earle Graser or Brace Beemer
did other voices as well? I can't see why not, given that WXYZ had what was
essentially a small repertory company; and given that Todd (the co-lead), who
had a pretty distinctive voice, was doing so. But maybe George W. Trendle
didn't want his lead actor to do other voices, even if he could pull it off.
As an example of an actor "pulling it off", Brace Beemer apparently did a
voice in at least one "Green Hornet" episode, but I couldn't pick out which
voice was his.

Back in the 1970s, when I first got a cassette tape recorder and began
collecting otr, I copied a few selected tapes (I think they included
episodes of the Lone Ranger and Tom Corbett, Space Cadet) for my sister,
who was teaching 5th grade. She told me that the kids loved them. I
don't see why today's kids shouldn't like them just as much if you can
get them to listen.
