Subject: Gosden & Correll photos
I'm looking at Radiola release #74. Amos & Andy, Secret Melody, and
Deputy Dirt Commissioner. Everyone who collected OTR in LP days probably
has this LP.
Turn it over. On the back are 4 pix of Gosden & Correll made during an
"early" A/A b'cast, altho they don't look so young to me. I'm just
wondering where these pix came from and if there are any more to be found.

The Cincinnati convention is less than a week away - next Friday and
Saturday. We're madly gathering our stuff together - don't want to
forget anything in a last-minute rush.
The flyer Bob Burchett sent out has the wrong address for the hotel. The
flyer says 3901 Pfeiffer Road, but the hotel is actually at 5901 Pfeiffer
Road. And if you want a refrigerator in your room, it's an extra ten
bucks a day. More info about the convention here: [removed].
If it's your first time there, look me up and introduce yourself! I'm
easy to spot, just look for the guy next to the pigtailed girl wearing
the (front) JACK JACK JACK (back) BENNY BENNY BENNY T-shirt.

From Those Were The Days

1935 The program, Rhythm at Eight, made its debut. The star of the
show was 24 year old Ethel Merman. Though Merman would become a legend
years later, she didn't fare so well on radio. Her show was taken off
the air after 13 weeks and Miss Merman returned to her first love, Broadway.

1937 A student of history, a broadcaster or anyone interested in news
coverage, will remember this day and the words of NBC's Herbert
Morrison. "Oh, the humanities!" Morrison's emotion filled historic
broadcast of the explosion of the dirigible, Hindenburg at Lakehurst,
NJ, became the first recorded coast to coast broadcast as it was carried
on both the NBC Red and NBC Blue networks from New York City.

Subject: Radio Spirits Arch Oboler Retrospective: Like,
what gives?
Fans of The Shadow are well aware that Radio Spirits has been gradually
making available the previously-unreleased episodes of the 1938
Goodrich/Orson Welles summer series. This, of course, is terrific, and I
would unhesitatingly urge every OTR collector to support them in this
[removed] for one thing. They have been, literally, eking out these
new shows in very small increments--2 to a boxed set, of which the dozen or
so remaining titles are all long-circulating episodes which presumably
everyone has already. On some financial level this probably makes sense to
the Radio Spirits people, but to long-time collectors it poses a frustrating
dilemma that strikes deep to one's pocketbook: whether or not to shell out
thirty-some dollars for two new shows per set.
No disrespect intended to Radio Spirits, who deserve commendation for making
these shows available in the first place, but I've found my own way around
the purchase dilemma by simply waiting six months from publication and then
requesting the sets through Inter-Library Loan at my local public library.
It's a hit-or-miss thing, because a lot of libraries will not loan
audio-visual materials. But so far I've been lucky and have received what I
requested.
Which brings me to the topic at hand: the Radio Spirits set entitled "Arch
Oboler Retrospective" which was released last year. I've just received it
through ILL and have a couple of thoughts on the contents. (By the way, the
liner notes are by Elizabeth McLeod.)
Firstly, amidst all the previously-circulated Oboler material in the set,
there is one rare gem that absolutely stands out: "What the Devil," the 1942
premiere episode of Oboler's CBS revival of LIGHTS OUT. This, to my
knowledge, has never been available before anywhere, and yet Radio Spirits
has seemingly shot themselves in the foot by not promoting the heck out of
this. After all, this is the legendary episode that Oboler claimed was stolen
from him for the Steven Spielberg TV-movie DUEL, over which Oboler sued the
network. What was Radio Spirits thinking in NOT making a big deal over the
release of this episode?
Secondly, why did Radio Spirits not deal-make with the necessary
rightsholders to release some of the uncirculated Oboler material in the
Library of Congress? Why give us in this set the 1943 broadcast of "Valse
Triste" which everybody who's a LIGHTS OUT fan has heard already, when the
LOC has the original 1938 "Valse Triste" with both Boris Karloff as star and
a more gruesome ending than the 1943 version?
So it's perplexing from several angles. There's still interesting and
uncirculating material out there that's crying for release, but by golly if
you ARE going to release it, then why would you NOT let people know in a
meaningful way that indeed you HAVE released it.
As a final question, then--by the same token--why does Radio Spirits not
arrange to release the extremely rare 1932-33 episodes of SHERLOCK HOLMES
which the LOC also has?
