Subject: Conrad Correction

I just noticed something from last week that needs correction.

From: Ronald Sayles <bogusotr@[removed];
May 4th births
05-04-1874 - Frank Conrad - Pittsburgh, PA - d. 12-11-1941
"the father of radio broadcasting" Started radio station KDKA in his
garage

Not quite true. Conrad operated amateur station 8XK from his garage in
Wilkensburg, Pa. This interested his employer, [removed] Davis of Westinghouse,
to start a commercial station owned by Westinghouse. The company received
the license KDKA, located the station at their factory in East Pittsburg,
Pa., and went on the air the night of the presidential election, Nov. 2,
1920. Conrad remained back in his garage that night, ready to sign on 8XK
should something go wrong with KDKA. Nothing went wrong, so he stayed off
the air, and never put 8XK on the air again. So one station led to the
other but never operated parallel to each other. KDKA was never operated by
Conrad, and KDKA never operated out of Conrad's garage. Conrad "inspired"
the founding of KDKA, but did not start or operate it.

Subject: Batman audition

I have a 15 minute audition from 9/5/1950 of the
Batman & Robin Mystery Club. I can see why this never
made the airways. It is not an adventure show as such
but Batman & Robin in a clubhouse with a bunch of kids
& no adventure. Very boring!!! Dick Olday

Subject: Re: Batman modern OTR

The second of two golden age BATMAN radio audition episodes was included
on Radio Spirits' SMITHSONIAN WORLD'S GREATEST SHOWBIZ TEAMS
collection. It starred former FOTR conventioneer Arnold Moss (CABIN
B-13) as the Caped Crusader.

There was also an earlier (circa 1944) radio audition that probably
starred Scott Douglas (who also voiced the title role in THE BLACK HOOD
radio series. Allan Asherman included some excerpts from that script in
the fourth issue of AMAZING WORLD OF DC COMICS.

And I believe the BBC did a Barman miniseries a few years ago.

I suspect that the recordings being discussed on this site are probably
from children's records released by either Leo the Lion records (in its
"Official Adventures" series) circa 1968 or by Power Records in the late
1970s. I believe the Power Records had art by Neal Adams. I seem to
recall that they released a Batman vs. Manbat record, but my memories
may be inaccurate.

mysterious secret ...)

Subject: OTR Event in Wisconsin

RG Productions of Kenosha, WI will sponsor another in their series of
public OTR events on Saturday, June 30, 2007. This one will be a
tribute to radio's lady detectives and will (with the permission of my
publisher) use the title of my book "Private Eyelashes" to caption this
affair. It will be held in the Kenosha Public Museum, located on the
shores of Lake Michigan.

This event, free to the public, will begin at 1 PM and feature two lady
detective performances. A "Candy Matson, YU 2-8209" episode will be
performed on stage as well as another feminine sleuth program, "Rebecca
Diamond, Private Eye." The latter script is by Nita Hunter and it
recently won an honorable mention from NATF. Yesterday I accepted an
invitation to participate in this radio event. I will deliver a short
history of the lady detective genre and play audio clips from rare
shows.

OTR enthusiasts from southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois are
eagerly anticipating this event. I look forward to meeting and greeting
my OTR friends in the area. For more details go to the web site of RG
Productions at <[removed]>

Subject: Bob Hope at Fort Belvoir
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

There is an episode of the Bob Hope Show which is performed at Fort Belvoir,
VA. Marilyn Maxwell is the guest. The show has been dated as 50-10-24 (which
is way off) and as 53-05-27 through various logs (which may be a little
off). There are five reasons I think the show may be from earlier in May
1953 such as May 6, ,1953, but I was wondering if anyone could provide any
verification one way or the other perhaps through newspaper articles?

 1. At 2:18 Bob says "Mrs Eisenhower has been accepted as a member of the

 2. Bob then says "While I'm here, I'm going to attend a dinner for the White
House Press Correspondents" This implies the dinner has not occurred yet.

 WHITE HOUSE WRITERS ENTERTAIN PRESIDENT

The article mentions Bob Hope attended.

 3. At 7:00 they discuss Bob's new movie with Marilyn Maxwell. The title is
deleted out, but it is probably "Off Limits." It premiered 19 February 1953.

 4. At 22:28 it is mentioned that Fort Belvoir was founded in 1778, "175
years ago" ([removed] 1953)

 5. On May 13th, the show was at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC (which
is relatively near Fort Belvoir)
