Subject: ANIMAL, VEGETABLE OR MINERAL?
If, like myself, you are old enough to remember listening to radio
back in the late 1940s and early 1950s (to be more precise between
February 2, 1946 and March 27, 1954,........ my high school and
college years) it is quite possible that a radio in your house may
have been tuned in to program called TWENTY QUESTIONS. It aired on
Mutual and while it wasn't quite as exciting as some of the adventure
dramas that the network hookup at the time or as amusing as CAN YOU
TOP THIS (another Mutual feature) there was something about the show
that caught my interest at the time, and frankly still does.
It was a panel program featuring what appeared to be three
completely unrelated regular panelists: Fred Van Derventer (a
well-known newscaster), Florence Rinard (whose weekly introduction
suggested that she was a celebrity in her own right) and Bobby
McGuire (a teenager whose pedigree was not always made quite clear)
another regular panelist was I was Herb Peloise and Bill Slater
rounded out the cast as the MC. The program also had a celebrity
guest panelist each week who, along with regular panel would be
challenged to identify whatever animal, vegetable or mineral kind of
thing suggested by listeners and repeated off Mike listening audience
in less than 20 questions. The rules were simple as that followed
the parlor game that most of us have played with friends or family
onetime another in our own lives.
Several years ago, quite by accident, I found myself in
communication with a fellow quite close to my age whose name is
Robert Van Derventer and was intrigued to discover that he was a
Bobby McGuire of the TWENTY QUESTIONS radio program. I also
discovered that, like so many other veterans of OTR, he was warm,
generous and friendly. To my surprise I actually had some programs
in the series that he did not have been and (shades of the collector
in me) he had a few that I needed. He also shared a good deal of
information with me concerning the program in terms of the health is
that how his father, Fred Van Derventer, created the program and how
he and his mother, Florence Rinard came to be involved. Robert was
a guest at our FOTR convention two years ago and spoke about his experiences.
My reason sharing these memories with fellow DIGEST it to alert
subscribers that Ben Ohmart, the king of OTR publishing has just
released a book written by Robert Van Derventer in which he shares
his recollections of growing up as a panelist on a popular radio
program during the final years of radio's Golden age and into the
early years of television. Information about this book and others
published by Bear Manor Press is available at their web site.

Regarding Bob Jennings' question about whether Leadbelly had ever recorded a
song about the Hindenburg [removed] looks like he did. It's available on
Rounder Records at the Library of Congress' website:
[removed];cid=13&scid=91&iid=862
It's actually two songs: "The Hindenburg Disaster Part I" and "Part II," and
was recorded by Alan Lomax in the early '40s.
This is my first email to the list. I hope I did it right.

Subject: Old-Time Radio events at [removed]
The Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention, Clarion Hotel, Aberdeen, Maryland,
September 13-15, 2007.
The convention will be hosting a bunch more old-time radio-related than last
year. Below is a list of events and movies that are old-time radio based.
A complete list is available on the web-site,
[removed]
I only listed below the OTR-related events.
Also, VERY IMPORTANT. One of the motels across the street is booked up that
weekend. I just learned this from someone who phoned and told me. I have
the Clarion holding rooms at the special convention rate for me, in the
event some people cannot get a room at the hotel or any of the motels. But
I only have a limited number of rooms. So if you cannot get a room, call
me. But please don't hesitate. Someone last year griped because they
couldn't get a room, and were forced to get a motel down I-40 about 15
minutes away from the hotel where the convention is held.
The Clarion 410-273-6300
Red Roof Inn 410-273-7800
Super 8 Motel 410-272-5420

Travelodge Hotel 410-272-5500
Quality Inn 410-272-6000
Holiday Inn 410-272-8100
(The last hotel on the list is expensive so beware!) Use AAA if you can,
call around for the best rates.

Subject: Batman modern OTR?
Just acquired two short episodes of "Batman and Robin" in which Jackson
Beck is the narrator. I don't recognize the actors portraying Batman,
Robin, or Alfred. The theme music is based on the TV show that that
sorta places the date.
One episode is "Batman the Coward" in which Prof. Milo manages to
inject a phobia in Batman that makes him terrified of bats; it runs
about 15 minutes. The second one is about "Freddie, the Fake Boy
Wonder" and is about 7 minutes. There is no additional identifying
info on either episode to indicate the production company.
Do these ring a bell with any Dynamic Duo fans?

A friend of mine is doing the audio commentary for the 20th Century Fox
movie, CHANDU THE MAGICIAN, which is supposed to come out on DVD in the
fall. He's looking for any information regarding the radio program he can
find. I dug out all that I have, but I know there's probably a bit more.
Anyone who has any old magazine articles about the show or trivia, please
let me know so I can forward info to him. He goes to work on the commentary
next week.
