Subject: Keillor sellout, Milt Rosenberg
Keillor's show may not technically be OTR, but it's the closest thing
we have to live, network variety radio. His June 1 performance in the West
Michigan community of Fremont sold out all 400 seats in 37 minutes. I offer
this as ammunition for anyone trying to promote the idea that there's plenty
of interest in OTR-style radio.
WGN's Milt Rosenberg frequently deals with OTR on his 10 to midnight
Eastern time show. I have no doubt he would love to have Elizabeth, the
world's greatest A and A authority, on the station where it all began as
Sam and Henry.

Hi Gang,
Between 1988 and 1998, BBC's Radio 4. recorded and aired the complete Doyle
canon (56 short stories and four novels) starring Clive Merrison and Michael
Williams. The BBC has released them all on cassette and the four miniserials
based on the novels are also available on cd.
They're available from several British outlets, and probably in America as
well. Somewhere on [removed] a log can be found too.

Considering the almost complete and utter reaming Ms. McLeod suffered due to
last year's fairly innocuous prank, who the hell can blame her?!?
I find it interesting to note that, though her joke posting of last year was
greeted with scorn and disdain by a great many regular Digest participants,
many of those same people continue to post considerably in-depth historic
questions and follow them up with something like "Maybe Elizabeth can fill
us [removed]" or "I'm sure Elizabeth will respond with a more detailed

she was our personal on-call reference librarian -- let alone our no-fee

Did I miss the response to the "Births and Deaths" for April 1st where our
beloved listmaster was listed as a casualty on April 1, 2004? I am hopeful
that it was in the spirit of the day. By the way, if his birth date is
correct we were both born in the same year though Charlie is older by eight

Just wondering.

This review of a new bideo compilation of Mr. Ed episodes notes that George
Burns appears as a guest in one of them (he executive produced the show).
So a goodie for Burns [removed]
I purchased the set and I watched that episode. Regrettably, Burns isn't on
the episode for any lengthy period of time. Actually, it's one of those on
the screen, chats, leaves type scenarios. I suspect filming for his part of
the episode didn't last more than half a day. The DVD set that's been
released also features the episode in which Zsa Zsa Gabor and Clint Eastwood
were guests (and they played much larger, significant roles on their
episodes).
Incidentally, Jay Hickerson's ULTIMATE GUIDE book lists a radio episode of
Mister Ed. Though I suspect it's nothing more than an audio recording of a
TV episode, does anyone have this audio recording so I can check it out?

He regrets that he is unable to comply with your specific request, as you may
be aware, Mr Homes has now retired to Sussex where he spends his time
reviewing the records of his cases and keeping bees.

Subject: Not 'The Monitor'
In Digest 120, Lance quotes an email he received regarding NBC's
long-running weekend radio service:
"In the 1950s, television drew audiences away from radio. To
combat a waning audience, NBC radio created The Monitor--a
magazine for radio."
Of course, the program, which ran from 1955-75, was just plain
"Monitor." I believe "The Monitor" may have been the name of a
Civil War-era naval vessel.
Incidentally, a new edition of Dennis Hart's Monitor book,
"Monitor (Take 2)," was pubished last year. I greatly enjoyed the
first edition of the book, and this expanded version promises six
completely new chapters as well as other enhancements. Details at

writes:
I recently read that there was a pilot episode for a
1940's Green Lantern radio show. Does anybody know
where I might find a copy of it?
***False alarm. I acquired an MP3 copy of it a year or so back from Jerry
Bails, and as I expected it was actually off a record (THE OFFICIAL ADVENTURES
OF AQUAMAN, THE FLASH AND GREEN LANTERN) that Gerb Galewitz produced for MGM's
Leo the Lion records back circa 1966-68 (along with THE OFFICIAL ADVENTURES OF
THE SHADOW, FLASH GORDON, PRINCE VALIANT, MANDRAKE & THE PHANTOM, etc.).
While the Flash and Aquaman stories dramatized silver-age comics stories, the
Green Lantern segment dramatized the original golden-age origin story from
ALL-AMERICAN COMICS #16. The confusion resulted because Galewitz cast radio
actors
including Jackson Beck for the records, though the 1960s musical bridges
should have been an immediate giveaway that these recordings didn't originate
in
the 1940s. The sound effects were dubbed at NYC's Cinemasound, where I later
recorded my "Voices from The Shadows" audio documentary for GAA's THE SHADOW
CHRONICLES. --Anthony Tollin

Subject: "Monitor"
A follow-up to Lance who has recently discovered the "Monitor" tribute page.
The website has been around for quite awhile and it spawned a terrific
book "Monitor: The Last Great Radio Show," by Dennis Hart, who spent 20 years
in
broadcasting and teaches Mass Communication at California State University,
Fresno. A second edition of the book "Monitor" (Take 2) came out last year
with
lots of additional memories from those who worked on the show. "Monitor"
the creation of Sylvester "Pat" Weaver, came out of the NBC studios in
Rockefeller
Center called "Radio Central," and featured news, sports, comedy, variety and
live
remotes from around the country and around the world. Big name hosts included
Dave Garroway, Hugh Downs, Frank Blair, Frank McGee, Gene Rayburn, Ed McMahon,
Henry Morgan, Bill Cullen, Joe Garagiola, and many others. Even Don Imus was
a "Monitor" 'communicator.' He once did a hilarious interview on the show
with [removed] Brothers which was aired again on "Monitor's" final day in
1975. I h
ave a tape of that broadcast. And we can't forget
"Miss Monitor," (Tedi Thurman) who with that sexy, sultry voice and a lush
music
backround gave temperatures and weather in cities around the country. She
never gave her name on the air and was a big hit. Hart's book is a great read
for anyone who remembers and listened to "Monitor." It's available via the
"Monitor" tribute page. [removed]
