Subject: Honeymoomers

With the passing of Art Carney there has been a dearth of the
Honeymooners reruns. On the credits you will note that they were recorded
by Dumont Electrocam. That was true. They were actually produced in the
old Dumont TV studios on East 63rd Street in Manhattan. At that time TV
video tape recording had not been developed. Kinescope, a video camera
trained on a small TV screen was the only way a TV show could be recorded
and the results left a lot to be desired. Dumont Labs developed the
Electrocam which produced both film and a video output. The director
could see and call his shots the same as live and then edit the film. I
may be a bit vague about this procedure but that was the basic idea. When
I was the audio engineer on "Edge of Night" CBS leased Dumont's enormous
Studio 63. It was three stories high. "World Turns" also originated from
another equally large studio in the same building. Both "llive". As my
audio control room was near the top, I avoided trips to the studio floot.

May I suggest the First Generation Radio Archives? There is no doubt as to the
quality of their
CDs, and membership in that organization assists them as they restore classic
shows
to broadcast quality

The kids just want to express their love and thanks to the owners of the
voices they hear on a daily basis, to make some kind of a connection ....
Does anyone have any advice for making this happen? Do these people mind
being bothered?

Dear Micheal & Brood-
As to the Old Pros minding, my experiance with them has shown them to be a
very gracious, appreciative group. For my part, if the kids are at all
familiar with LET'S PRETEND, or MERCURY THEATER (he was in CAESAR, TREASURE
ISLAND, & LIFE WITH FATHER), I'd be happy to forward notes to Arthur Anderson
(I just "John Drew-ed" to his "Joe Jefferson", in a new play reading last
night.)
It's not right to volunteer other's services, but I can think of two Listers,
a Gentleman on the East Coast, & a Lady on the West (convention staples), who
would be eminently suited to forward such missives, if they care to step

I am from Kansas and Missouri; the river is pronounced "R Kansas"
and the state is pronounced "R Can Saw" - at least in eastern
Kansas and western
Missouri.

I grew up in Arkansas, across the river from Memphis, TN. The state and the
river were prounced "R - Can - Saw" to us.

No offense (now that I'm older and wiser), but we laughed when we heard
folks pronounce it "R-Kansas."

Similarly, we called ourselves Arkansans, and not the reprehensible
"Arkansawyer."

Max Schmid asked

Can anyone let me know of specific circulating shows
that Art Carney appears on?

An excellent resource for actor's appearances on radio show is J. David
Goldin's web site <[removed]; which has an index to
the database by either actor's name of show title. Currently Goldin's
database has 104 listings for Art Carney.

The program "Cool Edit" by Syntrillium Software is great for capturing
streaming audio. You can edit your "catch" in the same program.

Another newsgroup for all OTR programs (If everyone hasn't already
discovered it) is [removed] Frequently MP3's
of band remotes are posted as well as tons of other OTR shows. Quality
varies and unfortunately some posters have a habit of chopping off
beginning and endings of shows - a sin to we purists, but most are good
and clean and full sets are often posted. Here again you will want Cool
Edit to clean them up, adjust volume, etc.

The Canadian jazz artist who has pulled a disappearing act for the last

Lemme know. If so. Greetings dear man and thanks for the good vibes for
so many years.
If there's music you want, write me off line and we'll hook up, besides
we know some of the same people and it'll be nice to say hello.

Subject: writing to the stars

I, too, have thought about how we are quickly losing our OTR
professionals. I hadn't heard about Penny Singleton dying. She'd
lived a long life, but still I'm saddened by it. We miss Dick Crenna
and now Mr. Carney. I've recently been listening to "I Love A
Mystery" and it has caused me to think of one of its stars who also
has starred in TV, motion pictures and stage: Mr. Tony Randall. Does
anyone know how one could respectfully contact him?

Subject: Art Carney as FDR

I haven't had a chance to see of anybody else posted about this, but right
after Carney's death was made public, an entertainment reporter for WCBS-TV
New York mentioned that he had interviewed Carney in the past, and that
Carney had told him that he had subbed for FDR many times on fireside chats
when FDR was called away suddenly or was otherwise busy. He said that Carney
had told him that when he did this, he tried not to do just an imitation of
FDR's upper crust demeaner. He said that he tried to make him seem more
homey. This seems to me to be quite a cock and bull story. While it is
known that Carney did imitate FDR on a dramatized news program (either March
of Time or a similar program) and that this was stopped when the White House
asked around 1935 that FDR nbot be imitated for security reasons, it seems
unlikey that he could have been asked to fill in for a full speech. All of
the Fireside Chats exist. Has anyone spotted one that might be an imitator?
Anybody know which news programs Carney appeared in? I am wondering if
Carney might be the one who imitates FDR nominating Al Smith at the 28
Democrat convention on Murrow's I Can Hear it Now, Vol III 1919-1932,
Columbia ML 4340. Carney's name does not appear on the credits for the
album, so it might not be him. I have this newscast on videotape and will
ask the reporter to see if he can go back to the specific Carney interview
where this is mentioned. I bet the reporter has misunderstood what Carney
had told him. (I wish this subject had come up while Carney was still alive
so that he could be asked for the specifics.)

We've discussed in the past that there is a similar contention that some of
Churchill's speeches were delivered by an actor, but I think I have nailed
this down to one specific speech, with all the others in question being the
recordings Churchill made in the late 40s and early 50s.

Subject: Re: OLD OTR Performers

Michael Leannah Just posted something about writing to OTR Performers.

(SNIP>.....My daughter asked me last night, "Are there any left I could write
to?" She was asking specifically about the Jack Benny Show and I had to tell
her no. "How about the Cinnamon Bear?" No. "Lone Ranger?" Uh-uh.
(SNIP)
I thought about Hal Stone, who the kids are familiar with, and Rhoda
Williams, who I met at the FOTR convention a couple of years ago. Perhaps
they would be receptive to a couple of kids' fan letters.
(SNIP)
I'm sure they'll respectfully ask for an autograph or the answer to a question
or two, with the understanding that nothing is promised or expected.
Does anyone have any advice for making this happen?

Sheese! What am I, difficult to get along with? :)

Do these people mind being bothered?

Bothered? NO! Pestered? Yes.

Michael, in this enlightened (?) High-Tech age, why don't you be a good
Daddy and let your kids have a crack at your computer once and awhile. It
would be real simple for them to ask me anything they want here on the
Digest.

However, if they insist on making Uncle Sam rich, (and you poor) by sending
letters through the mail, they can use my Post Office Box address.

Bygone days Press

But that's only in case they need a hard copy of something. As for answering
fan letters, I much prefer dashing off an e-mail response. As for
autographed pictures, the Autograph is free, the picture costs me about a
buck to make (what with Glossy ink jet paper, Printer Ink, etc.) It's the
postage that's a pain. (And going to the post office). I generally ask
people to send $[removed] in postage stamps (unused, of course) :)... to cover my
costs if they request a picture.

Hope this response makes you a hero with your Kids. Say Hi! to them for me.
