A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Spry shortening & other things that aren't
 here anymore

I Googled Spry shortening to see if it is still made. I came across
this site, "Hometown Favorites":
[removed]

The site calls itself "The Hard-To-Find-Grocer"
It lists discontinued products alphabetically. Among them is Spry
shortening, Fluffo shortening, Amos & Andy Bar, Cream of Wheat Hot
Chocolate Cereal, and (lamentably) Armour Beef Tripe, among many others.
You might want to check out the list for other products that you
haven't seen lately. It appears that they sell other "hard-to-find"
items, but I didn't check those area of the site.

[Usual disclaimer: I have nothing to do with the site or the company
- mention is for info only.]

While my book, "Private Eyelashes: Radio's Lady Detectives"
concentrates on the women performers who voiced the OTR sleuths, it
also covers in detail the other ladies who worked on these shows.

Just a few examples: Edith Meiser, the writer of "Sherlock Holmes" and
"The Shadow", was a former suffragette. "The Affairs of Ann Scotland"
(with Arlene Francis in the lead) had a woman director, Helen Mack,
and writer, Barbara Owens. The married duo of Richard and Frances
Lockridge created "Mr. and Mrs. North" which became a popular radio
show: Richard later admitted that the character of "Pam North" was
based upon his wife.

An excellent book that addresses Karen's question would be: "Invisible
Stars; A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting" by Donna L.
Halper, published by [removed] Sharpe of Armonk, NY (2001)

Harper did some of her research at the Library of American
Broadcasting, the facilities of which Michael Henry explained well in a
recent Digest posting.

For I believe the first time, a major radio convention featured a panel on
"The Cinnamon Bear" and two recreations. I am very grateful that the program
won this kind of support from the Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound and their
convention charman , Mike Sprague.

My guess is we won some converts. That fact made the experience so very
worthwhile.

Subject: The Whisperer

The same thing happened to me--two episodes of The Whistler turned out
to actually be The Whisperer. (In somewhat poor sound, as I recall.)
Those of you with big MP3 collections might want to rename the
following two episodes, if you've got them in your Whistler collection,
as they're actually the Whisperer:

07/15/51	Attempted Murder
08/26/51	Taken for A Ride

I didn't see any similarities between The Whisperer and The Shadow. The
Whisperer has no powers; he's just a double-agent--used to be a bad guy
(when he had amnesia, I think); now he's working for law and order but
still maintains his Whisperer identity so that he can gather inside
information on crooks. A decent series, but hardly great (IMHO).

Might we some day get an e mail message like paraphrasing the ones that

old messages was the term "CONELRAD [CONtrol of ELectronic RADiation] system

Subject: Detective Series Question

Hi all,

I got a question today from a customer who was trying to figure out the name
of a radio detective and I'm ashamed to say that I was unable to help. His
distinguishing characteristic? According to the customer, "He was married,
but you never saw the wife's face. All you saw were her hands, as she was
feeding him dinner. She did have a speaking part as well." I asked if the
customer was maybe thinking about a detective on television or in a movie,
but was assured that the detective in question was on the radio airwaves
during the 1930s. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

Subject: Bookshelf Albums

My wife, in her pursuit to have me clean out the loft, is getting her way.

I have a box of 35 bookshelf albums, the black plastic kind that hold three
audio cassettes and can hold a colored insert on the outside plastic sleeve,
wrapped all the way around. Standard bookshelf album.

I also have a box of about the same size that also has 35 bookshelf albums
but this one holds 6 cassettes instead of 3.

For anyone who has a bunch of OTR cassettes and wants to put them in
bookshelf albums, I need to get rid of these. Cost is $[removed] plus postage,
that's a buck per album and cheaper than Polyline or National Audio offers,
so even dealers can save some money.

Anyone interested can e-mail me direct,
Martin

Subject: Charlott Greenwod in Radio

I too remember Charlotte Greenwood in the movies she had a dry sense of
humor that reminded me of Eve Arden. If I ever tried to Kick as high as she
did would end on my rear end with something broken. She was great in movies,
but she had her own radio show called the Charlotte Greenwood Show. In the
summer 1944 Charlotte Greenwood show was the summer replacement for Bob
Hope's Pepsodent [removed] to 9/5/44

She Had her own show from 10/15/44 to 1/6/45. Her show, in my opinion, was
like a soap opera . She was raising 3 kids who were orphan and short of
money. Edward Arnold was a semi-regular. She had movie as guest stars on a
lot of her episodes. Hallmark Cards sponsored her on Sunday afternoons over
ABC. I check her biography on web that Ed Kindred referred to and it didn't
mention her radio career
