I didn't look at everything there, but I noticed that Rochester's lines
are in ALL CAPS, but the lines of everyone else were in lower case.
Anybody know why?
Dear Dan-
Methinks Laura might be better posted on this subject, [removed]
A guess would be, Eddie Anderson's vision? I seem to recall that he had
problems in that area.
Best,

Recalling a thread of a week or two back, New York Times columnist and former
editor of Reason Magazine Virginia Postrel blogs about Elizabeth McLeod, the
aesthetics of radios and plugs "The Original Amos 'n' Andy." She is the
author of a book called "The Substance of Style," which is about the ecnomic
value of aesthetic design.

Subject: Mrs. Calabash
I enjoyed the recent posting about the various sources of the origin of Mrs.
Calabash. I recently was reading a book about Jimmy Durante, which stated
his wife, Jeanne, though ill, encouraged Durante not to cancel his proposed
tour. In the best "show must go on" tradition Durante went on the tour, only
to have his beloved wife pass away before he could get home. I think this
fact, although not definitive, lends credence to the theory that Mrs.
Calabash was his late wife, and that he was simply saying good-bye to her in
his heart.
Personally, I lean towards this interpretation as it is one that has great
warmth and sentiment and puts a human face to Durante, the comedian.
However, I also like the idea that the mystery has never really been solved,
as it gives fans the opportunity to put their own spin on it and continue to
talk about it.
Good night, Mrs. Calabash, WHOever you are.

Subject: Superman Question
Hi all,
I've been confused by this for a long time--well I've been confused by a lot
of things for a long time. <grinn>In the Superman radio series, Jimmy Olson
seems to
pop in and out of the series. That's not the part that confuses me though.
In the beginning of the series, maybe the second episode, Jimmy and his Dad
are
saved by Superman. They help give him ideas as to how he can hide his real
identity and watch man at work and at play. After that, that part of the
Superman
history seems to just disappear. In later episodes, Jimmy doesn't seem to
know who Superman really is. What happened hear?
Superman experts help me. I'm assuming the writers just decided to ignore
the beginning plot line after the series was really up and running.
Would I be correct?
Thanks.
Bill

Probably it was "Rochester's" copy of the script, to highlight his lines -
the others would have had copies with only their lines capitalized, if my
theory holds up. Can you imagine the work for the typists, compared to
doing it on a computer?

Subject: Hattie McDaniel Postage Stamp
A stamp honoring Academy Award winner Hattie McDaniel, was
dedicated in Beverly Hills yesterday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Ms. McDaniel played the lead in the Beulah Show on CBS, a Monday through
Friday 15 minute show with a studio audience. The building was located on
the southwest corner of Gower and Sunset Boulevard, in Hollywood, but don't
look for a studio. It is an office building now. CBS did not have enough
audience auditoriums at Columbia Square, and Lux was done at Selma and Vine.

Subject: Dreft (From Procter and Gamble)
Admittedly, I did not pay too much attention when the first postings came
in, regarding the products advertised over the radio, which do not exist
anymore. When I was writing about Beulah, I was reminded that she was
sponsored by Dreft. Is Dreft still around? Was it mentioned? I have found
that the people who contribute postings on this Digest have excellent
memories.
Dreft was a Procter and Gamble powder that was made specifically for dishes.
Mild to your hands. And, while we are at it, has anyone mentioned Four-Way
Cold Tablets? It fought colds "four ways". In Los Angeles, we had a bread,
I think it was Wonder Bread. It at first built "bodies eight ways." As if
that were not enough, it later went on to build "bodies twelve ways".
