Subject: Wild Bill Hickock

2/12

1956- Wild Bill Hickok (and Jingles) rode off into the sunset on Mutual
for the last time, having been on radio since 27 May 1951.

They were also on television around the same time, I think with the same
cast. Was this one of the small handful of radio shows that originated
first on television?

The other TV to Radio shows that I know about were Space Patrol, Tom
Corbett Space Cadet, My Little Margie, Howdy Doody, and Have Gun Will
Travel. I suspect there were more.

Howdy Doody is a bit of a special case. It actually grew out of a
character that Bob Smith had on a Saturday morning kids show that he did
locally in New York. The character was called "Elmer," but always used
the greeting "Well, Howdy Doody!" The kids in the studio audience
called him "Howdy Doody," so Bob Smith decided to call him that. Since
the kids were disappointed that they couldn't see Howdy Doody (it was
radio, and all Smith did was talk with a different voice), he decided to
talk to the television people, resulting in the Howdy Doody Show on
television. A radio spinoff of the television show eventually started
circa 1951 and ran until Buffalo Bob's heart attack in 1954.

Another special case is The Goldbergs. That show began (originally
titled "The Rise of the Goldbergs") on radio in 1929 and finished its
run on radio around the end of World War II. It returned on television
several years later. Eventually, a new radio version, with the
television cast, spun off from the TV show.
