Hi, All,

[removed] "Franks on the Barrelhead" as Kingfish once said to Andy as he tried
to sell Andy an old clunker.

Actually it means "Free on Board," a trade and legal term wherein a seller is
obligated to deliver goods to a carrier designated by the purchaser. It is
complicated and requires either a law degree or much experience in long
distance buying and selling to fully understand.

Subject: About preserving cds

I just purchased some otr mp3s from a vendor and was strongly advised
to put labels on them to protect the cds. The vendor, of course, sells
labels, but firmly expressed their protective function. Most of my otr cds
do not have labels because i have not spent the extra money for such.
Instead, i have just labeled them myself using a marking pencil.
They are not attractive, but i can identify each. Question: how
important is a label? I thought the underside of the
cd was what was important to protect, not the topside. Anyone, please
advise.

I suggest reading the CDR faq at [removed].

About labels it says that that's an undecided issue. A lot of people insist
that they're good protection and others warn that there are problems
associated with them. Some of the problems are that they make the CDR too
thick for a few players; they're very difficult to remove without ruining
the CDR and if they're not properly aligned they can vibrate and ruin the
player.

With a store-bought CD, the bottom is most easily damaged. With a CDR or
CDRW the bottom is just as easily damaged but the top much more so. That's
because there's a fluid dye layer inside which is the actual recording media
and since it's thick it comes very close to the top surface and the top is
extremely thin. Scratching either side can damage the CDR but scratches on
the bottom can usually be repaired by buffing. Scratches on the top almost
always ruin the CDR.

Marking them with a pen can be a problem, too. It has to have a very soft
tip. And it has to have a balanced ph. If it's too acid or too alkaline it
can eventually eat it's way into the surface. The company that makes
Sharpies says that they are balanced ph and safe to use on CDRs.

I don't know any of this from my own experience. I've never damaged a CDR.
I've used labels a few times and never had a problem. I use an applicator
designed for the labels. I normally don't label them and I've always marked
them with Sharpies and in several years of doing that I haven't had a
problem yet.

I'm just sumarizing what I remember from the faq.

Does anyone know of an MP3 player that will play the
slow bitrate OTRs and has an antiskip function that
one could use for walking. I have a Rio but its not
good for that.

I have an Iriver IMP-50 that I got from Amazon on sale. I think they're
currently $40. Iriver made the Rio Volt for Rio and Sonic Blue but the ones
they make under their own labels have better battery life, more powerful
amplifiers and a million more features. Well, maybe not a million. :)

So far it's never failed to play anything that will play on my computer. It
says 32 to 320 kbs but I've played much lower bitrate OTR shows on it with
no problems.

Skip protection is excellent but, unless you have one of the cheaper Volts
that should be good too. I have a Rio Volt 100 that I've never had a
problem with.

Anyway, the IMP-50 has resume and ff and rew within a track, bookmarks,
adjustable rew speed, study, which lets you tap the stop button and it
automatically jumps back 10 seconds (or 5 depending on the setting) and more
functions than I can remember.

The one thing it lacks that some of the more expensive models have is a
backlight. I do miss that but it's so good every other way I don't care.
Also it gets 16 hours battery life for MP3.

Putting the CDs in is a little awkward because the door is on the bottom.
It's a little strange but not really a problem. Other than that it's got a
great interface.

Subject: Radio Memories

Thanks to Tony Baechler for his post regarding a CD order to Radio Memories.

I have sent Tony 3 emails (3/11, 3/15, 3/17) asking him to give me specific
numbers to be replaced. I haven't received any response from any of the
emails. There is no time limit, nor does the replacement have to be done
all at once, just give me the curtsey of a response before airing a
complaint on a public forum.

Since Tony went into specific issues and even presumed how our cds were
produced and indicated he thought the hum was introduced by something he
referred to as a "commercial recorder", let me address those issues for
other readers.

The process we use is to take an audio master from Ted's collection, covert
that to digital and burn a cd. Our goal is to produce as close as possible,
a CD copy of Ted's master. We use no "commercial recorders" in the process.
As most of you know, even within one series, say Amos And Andy, the quality
of each program may vary greatly, sometimes with hum, or off speed, pops and
static. Often, we may have several "masters" for the same program and we are
always looking for a better "master". We offer a customizing service where
we can take a program you may have and remove hum, static, pops, tape his,
correct speed etc. This is a time intensive process and is charged at an
hourly rate. This rate is quoted upfront before the work begins and is based
on hearing the recording to analyze what can be done and how much time it
will take. Obviously this can't be done for the rates we charge for regular
or sale orders.

I think our replacement guarantee is the best in the business. I know of no
other company that will sell CDs for $1 and offer a replacement.

Again, I speak for myself, as an independent contractor. Ted Davenport and
Radio Memories has always emphasized the goal is complete customer
satisfaction.

Corks, from wine bottles, when

make "Black-faces" for Minstrel shows.

I knew that! :) But only because a few weeks ago I
played the part of Judas Iscariot for a church drama,
and since my beard is mostly gray, and only a goatee,
our director suggested we use burnt-cork to darken the
beard and "fill-in" the rest of the facial hair to
make the beard look more full. But thinking about
what burnt-cork must smell like, I didn't savor the
idea. So instead of burn-cork I used face paint. Now
I'm thinking Grecian-Formula.

Subject: Temple [removed], etc. etc. / anyone have issues
 with old Audio Classics reels?

Hi,

I'm a big ILAM fan myself, but mainly because I don't care for the "Temple
of Vampires", I'm not too disappointed in the news. I figured something of
the sort would be the case anyway. Fellow ILAM fans may think me a cretin,
but I just don't care for Temple at all. I also consider the famous
"Stairway To the Sun" to be by far the worst ILAM storyline I've read. I
consider it and "Hermit" to be the only truly bad ILAM storylines I've seen
so far. (I've read about maybe half the storylines, maybe 60%?). Terrible
story! Even the Hummerts could have written better, in Stairway.

My fav. so far are the mansion/spooky locale stories: "Monster in the
Mansion," "Blood on the Cat" (a good one!). And a thriller one, "Murder on
February Island" (A+). I even like "The Thing That Wouldn't Die".

Per RM CDs, I've had the exact same issues as Mr. Baechler's had. The speed
problems I can fix, and I managed to salvage an overmodulated Captain
Midnight through Sonic Foundry's clipped peaks remover. I, though, mainly
stay with Ed Carr for 90% of my orders. Terry Salomonson fills in the rest
at the conventions, when I buy from him. Ed's stuff, (from reels) is
usually a bit offspeed (sometimes fast, sometimes slow) but that's very easy
to fix, and once done, the sound is VERY GOOD. I have never been
disappointed with an Ed order. Terry's CDs are also top notch.

Does anyone have any experience with old Audio Classics reels from when it
was in Missouri? I bought a bunch of reels (mainly 3 3/4 ips) at the
convention, and shockingly (I was truly surprised) the Audio Classics ones
were the worst of the bunch (I had bought mainly pedigreed reels). The
problem; DROPOUTS. The reels (Ampex 641) had chronic dropout problems and
in and out ([removed] one word would be there, the next dropped out, etc.).
Notes from the previous owner dated 1991 and 1993 noted the dropouts so they
were there when they were fairly new, not just now. One reel had a big
"Degaussed" sticker on it. I don't know if the reels being degaussed before
recording had something to do with it. There were maybe 5 reels. EVERY one
had at least one dropout issue. The non-Audio Classics ones from the same
owner had little to no dropouts.

Thanks, I hope someone might know why this phenomenon is taking place.
