Subject: Switch to Autolite -- Goodnight!
I love listening to Suspense while I'm knitting, and
much prefer OTR to television, contemporary radio, or
even a lot of movies. I feel a real gratitude for
"Suspense," and I'm in only the 1949-50 season!
I'm curious if anyone can tell me who the actress is
who signs out at the end of the Autolite shows. The
listener hears a telephone ring, then a very crisp,
bright feminine voice, which has just a trace of the
trademark automaton operator made famous in "Sorry,
Wrong Number," reports, "You can buy Autolite resister
spark plugs, Autolite stay-full [removed]," etc.
and then ends with "Switch to Autolite! Good night!"
Confession: I will often listen to the end of each
episode instead of forwarding to the next just to hear
this silly but weirdly effective little jingle. Who is
the actress, and any guesses on what she was paid to
wrap up the show each week?

While similar I was surprised to hear both shows using the exact same
script with the names changed. The show was "The Clue of the Ivory
Thread." Does anyone know if these shows were produced by the same
people? Dunning does not give production credits for Collins show.
Well, John, you need to look in my book: "PRIVATE EYELASHES; Radio's
Lady Detectives" where all the above questions will be answered for
[removed]
First of all, most of the scripts from "It's a Crime, Mr. Collins" were
borrowed, either from the Abbotts' radio series or the original novels
of Frances Crane, who first created the Abbotts. I've found examples
where the wording in "Collins" is identical to Crane's prose.
Secondly, although Mandel Kramer did have the lead in the short-lived
Mutual version of "Collins," no audio copies have survived. Moreover,
"Gail Collins" is the name of the character, not the name of the woman
who played her. And thirdly, all surviving copies of "Collins" were
produced "down-under" with Australian casts (Hector Crawford
Productions of Melbourne.) Yes, I know, their accents are "American"
but I assure you they're Australian. (But it's not your fault; OTR
dealers have been mis-labeling the Australian version for years as
"Mandel Kramer and Gail Collins.") There were 52 episodes recorded;
about 30 are in circulation. The leads were Keith Eden and Mary Disney.
"Abbotts" under the title "Abbot Mysteries" aired for the summers of
45, 46, and 47 on Mutual as a substitute for "Quick as a Flash." No
copies of these exist. They returned under the title "The Adventures of
the Abbotts" on NBC and ran from October 3, 1954 to June 5, 1955,
according to a log compiled by OTR researcher Art Chimes. As of 2004
there was only one audio copy in circulation, but since then about a
dozen (all AFRS) episodes have surfaced. Although Morgan was Pat
Abbott for the entire run, three men played her husband: Don Briggs
was replaced by Les Damon who was replaced by Mandel Kramer.

Subject: Whatever became of the Saint, and other
series?
Hi,
I'm wondering whatever became of the Saint ETs? While I was transferring a
lo-gen copy, I noticed that the shows just werent' very well
transferred. It appears to have been done on an old transcripiton
turntable (vintage turntables are nice to look at, but shouldn't be heard)
and the tonearm /cartridge presumably wasn't that great, making it a bit flat.
Hopefully the discs to this and other series that need to be re-transferred
still exist. Some such are
Charlie Chan and the Landini Mystery series (I really really want a decent
lo-gen copy of this).
Blackstone, the Magic Detective (BADLY needs)
Mystery is My Hobby (BADLY needs) - most extant copies are dreadful, even
from good collections.
The Shadow - oh boy, a lot of these dubs are dreadful, especially the
1942-49 years.
Inner Sanctum - hard to find in lo-gen/high quality in any great quantities.
There's a lot more, but those were some in general. I'm thankful that
someone in the past dubbed these, but with modern technology, they could be
re-done a lot better.

Not only spelled C A M E L S, but at one point they decided to spell it
backwards: LEMAC. Can't recall what they did with it, but it surely was
memorable.
Oh, one of my ads for SD 3rd district legislative seat reminds voters that
my name (Kneebone) is memorable.

Karen Lerner, again. I think the Jack Benny show was when he and the cast
decided to go from New York to London, and needed his money changed into
British. Can't recall the lines but the last part was something [removed] "A
tuppence, a thruppence, and a ha'penny." Next time I play it, I'll post the
date.
