    ADMINISTRIVIA:

Many people are receiving viral attachments, alledgedly from
people who have at one time or another posted to this list,
with bogus email addresses in the From: header field. These
addresses ARE [removed] origination point (at least for the
ones my server has received) is somewhere completely different
    from the From: header field.

    Two simple rules:

    1) DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS ON WINDOWS MACHINES UNLESS YOU CAN
VOUCH FOR THE SENDER AND EXPECTED THE ATTACHMENT!

    2) DO NOT ASSUME THAT AN EMAIL CONTAINING A VIRUS (OR SPAM)
IS ACTUALLY COMING FROM THE ADDRESS IN THE FROM: HEADER
FIELD! (These things intentionally alter this header field
       to hide the origination point.)

I realize better than most how bothersome these Windows viruses
are (the unix server disarmed between 50 an 60 in the last few
days alone), but you need to research carefully where the mail
is coming from before deciding a specific user is infected.
If you are unsure as to how to proceed, contact ME at
listmaster@[removed] and I will help you determine at least
from what SMTP server the mail originated. --cfs3

One of the television channels that shows old classic shows used to play the
Green Hornet [removed] show. My cable company no longer carries this channel so I'm
not sure which one it was, but it presented Have Gun, Will Travel & Dante,
with Howard Duff also. Wish we still got it.

Subject: "Old Time" Stereo System

Some months I remember a discussion here about whether "record players" are
still being sold.
I just got a KMART ad in the mail for Los Angeles-area stores, for a
week-long sale that begins Sunday, 6/8.
One item caught my eye: a "CLASSIC 4-IN-1 NOSTALGIA STEREO SYSTEM" with 33-
& 45-RPM Turntable; programmable CD player; Cassette player; AM/FM Radio;
"extra needle included".
The unit pictured in the ad looks like it's made of wood, but I don't know
if it is.
The ad calls it a "SPECIAL BUY". Sale price = $[removed] ("Quantities limited.
No rain checks.")...
I thought I'd pass this along (for info only) to anybody who might be
interested. I don't know if KMART has this record player for sale in other
markets.
(Just so you know: I have no connection to KMART or its product sources,
and no way to profit from any sales of this item.)

Subject: sound effects specialists?

Hi. We had a question for anyone who may know: given that radio had so many
sound effects of varying types for all the different shows, what became of
the sound effects men (foley artists?) when radio gave way to tv? Did they
make the move successfully to tv work or did they have to find other
fields? In listening to various shows, we always find the sound effects so
effective in conveying the various actions taking place, that these men
(any women?) were true masters of their craft. Certainly sound is so
important to movies, but were they as important in early tv? (variety shows?).
Also, did Fred Allen have a tv show? My son (a Jack Benny mega fan) has
seen some of Jack's shows on tv, but wondered about Allen.
Thanks in advance to all those who know so much more than we do. We enjoy
learning from all of you. :o)

Subject: Gunsmoke episode

The Gunsmoke Episode about the man lynched by mistake,
with his widow (not son) killing those who did it is
called "The Joke's on Us." It aired Jan. 9, 1954.

One of the disturbing things about the episode is the
casual attitude the leader of the gang who lynched the
man has about his mistake. He tells the man's widow
that soon after the hanging they learned he hadn't
been stealing horses, and that they're sorry about the
little goof.

And that's the attitude he takes, that it was a minor
goof-- nothing to get worked up about. In fact, he
actually uses the phrase "the joke's on us."

What makes it disturbing is that attitude is not that
uncommon in the "real world."

Rick
