I've yet to receive any reliable information from the Museum of Radio
and Television. I'd advise anyone hoping to get information from them to
look elsewhere. They're about as unreliable as you can get. I tried to get
some information on "The Shadow" once upon a time and they said they'd
call me back with it. To date, I've never received the information.
I've also been promised copies of some of the programs they have in
stock.
Needless to say, none of them have been forthcoming. The same is true, in my
opinion, for any information from the Library of Congress. The few times
I've
gotten through to them I was told the information I requested would be sent
to
me, but they never arrived.
There should be a list of the most reliable (and unreliable) resources
to use
out there.
Another OTR Fan,
Kenneth Clarke

Chris Holm writes:
I've always wondered about that car sound. It must have come out of
some sound effects library or something. I was wondering if anyone ever
researched that sound and has some information on it. Anybody here know
anything about it?
I think I might know a little bit about that:
Once the networks were well established as a medium for drama, comedy, etc.,
sound effects records were produced.
At the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters Radio Archives we have a complete library
of sound effects records. These records are all 78rpm speed. Though later many
of these sfx records were transferred to 16" ET discs, the networks relied on
the 78s most of the time through the 40s. That particular car sound is on one
of the many 78s in the effects library of discs. I know CBS produced many 78
sfx discs.
The sound effects man had a large rectangular box on wheels that contained 3
turntables. Any one of the turntables could be used at speed or the speed
could be changed to go faster or slower; even to a total stop. The sound from
all three turntables could be mixed together if all three were used. Sometimes
only one was used, often two. Thus, if some people got into a car, you could
hear a car door slam shut (from a car door used for that purpose), then a 78
sfx record of a car starting and taking off would be played (the one we are so
familiar with). On the second turntable would be another record of just the
sound of a car as it was being driven. Thus, you had that standard car start,
followed by a seque to the second sfx record of the car driving. Of course
this was played under the dialogue of those in the car. All the 78 recordings
that were used were standard recordings with the same tracks. If you listen
closely to a lot of OTR shows and pay attention to the sfx, you'll find you
will quickly become familiar with other sounds that are always repeated.
Incidently, if there was a long scene where people are talking on a train and
you have the sfx of train tracks in the background, the sfx train tracks could
be continuously repeated until the scene was over because each turntable had
two tonearms. Thus as the first tonearm reached the end of the 12inch 78, the
second tonearm would be dropped on the record to continue the sound.
Hope this helps.
Any questions? Feel free to email me.

[removed] shall I celebrate Jack's 39th with? A Lucky or some Jell-O? Or
perhaps some Canada Dry, a new General tire (are they still around?), or a
heaping bowl of Bran Flakes. Who else sponsored JB while on radio? He had an
insurance company in the reruns, but I do not recall the name.
BTW: Who is still alive from the cast and crew of the radio show?

Bob Hicks asks,
I have a friend who insists that, as a
child, he listened to The Green
Lantern on radio.
Well, when I was growing up, there was a program, Land of the Lost, where
a couple of children, Isabel and Billy, brother and sister, would visit
an undersea kingdom where all things in the world that were lost would
end up. They interacted with various sea creatures, and their guide was
a fish named Red Lantern.
Perhaps this is what his friend was thinking of.
FWIW, the show was rife with puns.

Subject: BIG SISTER QUESTION
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from text/html
BIG SISTER. was the title of one of the more popular soap operas of
it's day. With the exception of what appears to be a syndicated run of
some 75 consecutive episodes of this soap opera only a few
scattered episodes (mostly from the 1940s) have survived.
The syndicated series (distributed by an organization called NANA)
features a cast of professional radio actors however Vivian Smollen ,
the soap star known for her featured role as OUR GAL [removed] but
not mentioned in any reference as if one of the actresses who played
the role of BIG SISTER is credited in the 75 episode [removed]
Why in the world, with most collectors being interested in the
likes of Jack Benny, Fibber McGee and Molly, Suspense, Dragnet,The
Shadow and scores of other better-known and perhaps more interesting
subjects would one want to discover the origin of this 75 episode
syndicated series? why indeed one might ask would time, energy, the
talents of serious radio performers and money be expanded to produce
such a series, apparently several years after the original had gone
off the air?
The programs comprising this run are not rare. They have been in
circulation for years and yet little, as far as I have been able to
determine, seems to be known about their origin. Should any of the
Digest subscribers be able to provide information about the origin of
this syndicated series (other than what can be heard by actually
listening to each of the 75 broadcasts) I would be most interested in
hearing from you.
Inquisitively yours,
Dave Siegel

With reference to the question regarding "Green Lantern," I suspect that
the relevant program Is "Land of the Lost," Isabel Manning Hewson's
40's radio fantasy that I remember with great affection. It told a
weekly story
of two children who were taken into a kingdom under the sea where lost
objects found their way. Their host and guide was a wise old fish called
"Red Lantern," not "Green Lantern," There was a comic book hero
who appeared in the 40's called "Green Lantern" created by Martin Nodel.
