Subject: The Golden Age of Radio: The Long Goodbye
As many of your know, this Sunday, September 30, marks the 50th anniversary of
the end of the Golden Age of Radio, for it was that day that CBS canceled its
final network dramas, "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" and "Suspense." This
weekend,
"Those Were the Days" (heard every Saturday afternoon from 1 to 5 pm CST at
[removed]) will commemorate (somehow, "celebrate" doesn't seem like the right
word) this landmark anniversary, with "The Golden Age of Radio: The Long
Goodbye." We'll take listeners through the last years of the Golden Age of
Radio
with the final broadcasts of "The Jack Benny Program," "The Stan Freberg
Show,"
"X Minus One," "Ma Perkins," "Gunsmoke," "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar," and
"Suspense."
Then on Sunday-the actual anniversary-we'll go full circle on "Radio's Golden
Age" (heard every Sunday from noon to 2 pm CST at [removed]) and
present
the first episode of "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" from 1949. Plus, we'll hear
Robret Montgomery in the first hour-long production of "Suspense" from 1948.
We
hope you'll join us as we honor the final years of the Golden Age of Radio
this
weekend-and of course, these shows honor the totality of the Golden Age of
Radio
every week!

Subject: Remember WENN rip-offs
Hello again --
I was apparently one of the lucky few to receive OTR Digest 152 (which
kicked off with my most recent letter) and be able to look at the link John
Doyle supplied for "The Complete series for Remember WENN." Charlie Summers'
admonition to watch out for offshore rip-offs of popular television series
prompted me to click on Doyle's link and go past the Remember WENN blurb to
other "series" for sale (like Pinocchio and Lady and the Tramp. Series?) and
look at the remarks of satisfied customers. For Lady and the Tramp, here
were two:
I intend to purchase again. The quality, style, and fit are all fantastic. I
love it and have already worn it. really courteous an helpful. fantastic
pictures .
I love it. very pleased with my purchase. unlike a lot of items on the
market, but i like it. better design the style. Have made many purchases from
this company.
(these remarks appear as though they were copied from a testimonial for an
online clothing company)
. . . and for the Disney Pinocchio "series":
Amazing. just as expected. they are so comfortable. The service is great to
experience. This was my first time shopping on line with you, and thank you.
very cool. looks really cute. Both of the items I got were great. Their
customer service is fantastic. High quality items.
(I have a lot of DVDs and videotapes, but few of them are "comfortable."
Perhaps I should ask for my money back).
I expect testimonials for such products to use the English language in such
a way as to convince potential customers that the reviews can be respected;
that its language doesn't sound like a poor translation from Japanese or
some other Asian tongue. At the least, it should convince its readers that
the writers know what they are talking about. This reads like the kind of
language I get in those letters from the Nigerian prince who keeps wanting
me to send him money so I can take five hundred billion dollars out of his
bank account. In other words, this <<DOMAIN NAME REMOVED>> site appears to be
a
real rip-off (but meaning no disrespect to the real Nigerian princes who
read this newsletter).
