"There are some who say the history of modern man began in ancient Persia,
now called Iran. And there are others in the capitols of the western world
who fear that the end of modern man may begin there, also."
Who said that? It was used as the introduction of an episode of "The Man
Called X." I think from 1951, but am not absolutely sure.

Sandy, If you end up finding QUICK AS A FLASH I'd like to get a copy
or at least listen to it. I remember listening to that show as a kid
and it would bring back found memories.

Got this note from my daughter away at college:
"I was just listening to an episode of "The Jack Benny Show," and Phil
was bragging about having written "That's What I Like About the South."
I'm sure that he didn't actually write it, but it made me wonder who did.
Did Jack's writers come up with the lyrics? Was it written specifically
for Phil? Do you know anything about its history?"
I don't, but I'll bet YOU [removed]
Thanks for any help,

Subject: OTR research
Paul Urbahns commented:
In Digest 254, "Derek Tague" talked about the research files collection at
NYPL f/t Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, where the entire "Foy, Fred" file
consisted of ONE item!...a 1969 ABC-TV press release. He also mention the
lack of information on Howard Culver.
I have found similiar problems in my researching of local history here in
Kentucky. When I find a library or research facility does not have
information, I think they shopuld have, I either make a return trip, if
it is local, or mail them the additional information for thier files. My
input has never been refused and I have received a few nice letters for my
contributions. Usually plain typewrite size paper works best.
I too have done the same, though not as often as i wish, but most of the
time I also send a copy of the book or books written based on research from
those libraries so they have a copy on shelf for future reference. On a few
occassions I send books to libraries not for donations but to help with
their reference works. Once such example was the Library of Broadcasting in
College Park, Maryland. They had a couple books that was EXTREMELY out of
print and contained tons of errors (and during the course of research,
discovered that those particular works were reviewed very negatively by
critics when they first came out) so I sent them a few of mine, and others
that could take the place. After all, there is a difference between a 220
page book and a 660 page book, both covering the same subject. I never asked
for a receipt for tax deduction purposes and never got one - and this is
common. I don't do it for money, I do it to help anyone who visits their
library in hopes it will help their academic research.
As for research, I have always confirmed with staff what they have exactly
in their files and archives before making a trip to do research, or send
someone to do the research for me. It's far too expensive to make a trip
for little info (hotel, gas, travel, food, copy fees, etc.) A few trips
cost me over $2,000 and I'd feel bummed out if a library didn't have what I
came for. Small tip for anyone interested: phone the library ahead and ask
them if they have more details about their collections and holdings. I have
found that many times there is more than what's listed on their on-line
database and in many cases, MUCH more details. In one instance I knew the
library had scripts for JACK ARMSTRONG and it listed 1940 - 1942 but when I
phoned the library and asked a staff member if they actually had three
years' worth or not, it turned out they only had 7 scripts dated between the
years of 1940 to 1942. Saved me money learning that in advance. What a
library has in their files and what they say they have on their on-line
catalogs are two different things.

Would somebody here in the ether be able to direct me to whatever company
puts out
a good-quality copy of the widely seen public-domain episode of "The Jack
Benny (TV)
Program" in which Jack calls himself "Zeke Benny" and fronts a hillbilly
jug-band featuring
a ten-year-old Beverly Washburn and the real Frankie Remley?
