Subject: "Lum and Abner" Comic Strip

Just a reminder that the "Lum and Abner" comic strip is still rolling along,
and for our blind friends we provide an audio version complete with music and
sound effects. The 137th strip was published this past Sunday, and there are
archives to help get caught up. This summer, if all goes as planned, Lum and
Abner will make a guest appearance that should be quite special, but I can't
announce the specifics yet!

I'd be honored if you'd visit us each week at our home site. Thank you!

1/12

1932 Ed Sullivan joined CBS radio in a program of gossip and interviews.

This is interesting. At some point Ed Sullivan must have begun to
include appearances by new talent, since we have long been told that
Jack Benny's radio debut was on Ed Sullivan's show. So now I'm curious
to know just how much he did that in the radio days. We know that by
the time he did a television show, he was doing a variety show, not
gossip and interviews. So does anyone know to what extent Sullivan did
actual performances on his radio show?

In TV days, the joke about Ed Sullivan was that "Sullivan will be on the
air as long as other people have talent." But Ed had some talent of his
own. Once, when Red Skelton was out sick, Ed substituted for him. I
have a video of Ed Sullivan, in costume and makeup, doing Red's
characters Clem Kadidlehopper and Freddy the Freeloader and doing a
pretty good job of it.

It was posted, in part:

Aunt Jenny's whistling canary, for those of you ready to inquire, was
played by animal imitator, Henry Boyd.

Boyd = Boid = Bird

Folks;

   After a few delays, I've finally posted a small tribute to [removed] bunch
of photos I've taken of him over the years, and a short video taken at the
2010 FOTR Convention where he played Doc Gamble to Arthur Anderson's Fibber
McGee.

   It's on the blog at [removed] - as always, you may need
to scroll down if I've posted anything else between my writing this and you
reading it.

         Charlie
