Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!

A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

I've just launched a website ([removed]) it currently features
only a few memoir titles dealing with radio.

I know that I've missed a few which will go into the next version of the
site: Hal Stone's and Joe Julian's. I'd appreciate suggestions of some other
titles that I should add to the listing.

Thanks -

With Jack French's explanation of full dress suit and other fine
points of haberdashery history, it's time to recall those great
lines from Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy.

At the prospect of working again, a grateful Fred Allen exudes
with, "Let me kiss the hem of your tuxedo."

Charlie: It's a tailcoat.

Fred: I shall throw you the kiss.

Subject: Dayton Allen? Why Not?

Comedian/cartoon voice-over artist Dayton Allen was the brother of Bradley
Bolke (alive and well and living in Westchester County NY). Bolke was also a
voice-over artist in his own right: most notably as Nikita Khrushchev on the
Vaughn Meader "First Family" albums, and as "Chumley, the Walrus" and "Jerboa
Jump" on the "Tennessee Tuxedo" TV cartoons. Bradley also can be heard every
year on TV at Christmastime as the voice of "Jangle Bells," an elf character
in the perennial "The Year Without a Santa Claus."

Subject: Tux or tails

Date: Sun, 17 Jan 2010 08:53:17 -0500
From: jack and cathy french <otrpiano@[removed];

The tuxedo (as it would be called in the US) was called a "dinner
jacket" in Europe, when society men, led by royalty, starting
wearing jackets without tails around 1886. Although the jacket was
the same black or blue color, it could be ivory in warmer climes.
(Think Bogart in "Casablanca")

When I was in high school (early 1960s), a black jacket was called a
tux and a white (actually ivory) jacket was a dinner jacket. Which
to use depended on the time of year. Thus, we rented tuxes for the
junior prom, in March, and dinner jackets for the senior prom, in
June.

I also heard from somewhere that "white tie" on an invitation meant
tails and "black tie" meant tux or dinner jacket. My father told me
that in his day, "strictly formal" meant tails and "semi-formal"
meant tux or dinner jacket. However, in 1975, the invitations for
Governor Michael Dukakis's inaugural ball said "semi-formal," and it
was clear from news reports that they meant suit and tie, as opposed
to tuxes. I knew one MIT student who was going and understood "semi-
formal" to mean tux, until he learned otherwise.

Sometime in the 1970s he did voices for a Saturday morning TV show
called "Lancelot Link, Super Chimp," which was all about a family
of anthropomorphized chimps.

As Tom Kirby quite correctly pointed out, it was "Secret Chimp" not
"Super Chimp." I knew that, too. That's what happens when I do e-
mail too late at night.
