Can it be that none of Kate Aitken's cooking shows for CFRB in Toronto
survive? She was a highly popular broadcaster in the 1940s, sort of a
Canadian Martha Stewart.

Subject: Getting in touch with radio/film stars
Bob Cockrum wrote:
Can any list members (particularly, you authors) tell me how to
get in touch with any of these people (or other radio
performers)? I tried Googling a couple of their names, but only
came up with IMDB listings or some for-pay company supposedly
with celebrity addresses that may or may not be legit.
The best way to contact present or former film stars is to contact (SAG) the
Screen Actors Guild. You can call either or both the West Coast offices or
the East Coast offices. You can also contact SAG by going to their website:
[removed].
You may have to do a bit of hunting to find the right department which will
then give you the name of an actors agent or manager. If you call SAG you
will have to work you way through all the "press 1 if you [removed]" etc.
In the case of retired (former actors) it may be harder to find a contact for
them, but some have left phone numbers with SAG just in case. I wanted to
look up Yvonne Wilder who starred in a short film I directed and when I
called someone at SAG told me she no longer has an agent, but there is a
phone number I could call. I did and we re-connected. In the case of Dick
Moore, since he lives and works on the east coast, you may be able to get a
number from SAG or look him up on the internet as he still runs a business. I
remember him referring to his business on that TCM special. Margaret O'Brien
and Jane Withers are still listed at SAG west coast, but their contacts may
also be listed at SAG west coast.
I don't know where you live, but if you live in the midwest or near Chicago,
there are SAG offices there -- lots of SAG offices peppered throughout the
major states.
For former radio stars, contact AFTRA. Same procedure.
Hope you find what you want.

There's a new musical coming out in New York this month called Going Down
Swingin' that pays homage to a lot of classic shows (Helen Trent, Shadow,
Aldrich Family, Philip Marlowe).? It takes place in 1956 at the studio for
the "Liberty Cigarettes Hour" a variety show struggling amidst the rise of
television (and a thinly-veiled take on Jack Benny's show).? It's being
presented in a high-profile run this year's New York Musical Theatre Festival.
Yes, this is new material, but for OTR fans who like musical theatre, it's
definitely a [removed] And it could open up a lot of new people to [removed]
did for me!
Details and stuff are at [removed].

I don't remember any cooking shows, but Kraft Foods and Jell-0 sponsored
shows, as part of commercials, gave recipes for using their products. I
also remember Pillsbury, General Mills and makers of Spry and Crisco
gave ideas on using their products. I seem to remember they offered
recipes by mail.

Subject: Recipes on the air
There was a transcribed music program in the late 1930's, sponsored by
Norge appliances, which I recall as having offered at least one simple
recipe per show, along with useful household hints.
The pattern was for a gracious unnamed hostess to introduce and perform
light banter with an established musical guest (if he was white!?!?; there
was no interaction if he was coloured), and then a comedy act, and then
back to the music. In between she earnestly discussed with the announcer
the value of Norge appliances, and backed up her street cred by telling how
to prevent your blueing from staining your laundry in hard water, etc.
I found these transcriptions in the jazz section of my music store back in
the days of vinyl records.

Subject: Big Band Remotes
Through the courtesy of an unnamed source I've been listening to some
recently posted big band remotes. I was surprised to see a Guy Lombardo
from 1964 and a Russ Morgan from 1969. I was sure the dates were errors
until I played them. Through the song selections I believe these dates are
probably correct.
When did the networks, (in this case CBS) stop the big band remotes?
Apparently these were going on much longer than I realized.
My personal experience with band remotes was limited to New Year's Eve, when
I'd stay awake listening to the remotes move across the country.
Regards,
Tom Rose
