Kenneth Clarke writes:
BTW, I've been wondering if any sports programs were ever broadcast
on OTR, in particular, boxing matches. Some of the greatest boxers in
sports history, I'm told, fought at Madison Square Garden. Were any of
these fights broadcast on radio?
As Senator Claghorn might put it: Son, have you not heard of the Gillette
Cavalcade of Sports?
Gillette presented broadcasts of all sorts of sporting events but probably
the best remembered are the Friday night fights.
Announcer: "The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports is on the Air!!"
Music: "To Look sharp-and be on the ball,
To feel sharp-every time you call,
To stay sharp-use Gillette Blue Blades
for the quickest, slickest, shave of all!"
The Cavalcade of Sports also migrated to television as early as 1944 first
on NBC and then later on ABC until 1960. The intro I used above may be from
the TV series. But I think it was first used on radio.
As we didn't get a TV set until 1956 my dad and I listened to many fights on
Friday nights. Seems to me we listened the Louis-Marciano bout when
Marciano took the title from the great champ.
Regards to all,

Subject: University of Southern California
I will be visiting the University of Southern California (USC) at the end of
the month. This will be my very first entry into California (and Los
Angeles). The purpose is for a research project and the library staff is
concerned that what I want to look at and document, may be too much for me
to browse within the two days I have to go through it all. (As Derek Tague
would verify from a NYC trip once, an extra pair of hands and a little
determination can complete a job that normally would take a few months, only
a few hours to accomplish.)
I was wondering if there might be someone in the Los Angeles area who would
not mind giving me a hand at the library. Sometimes a second pair of hands
can come in handy and speed the process up as my time will be limited.
Their hours are 10 am to 4:30 pm. The second purpose is so if by some
chance I do not have time to go through everything, rather than spend the
money and squeeze my schedule for a return trip (booking the airline flight
was a BIG pain), the helper would be familiar with what I am doing and the
material, and could go back and finish the job and pick up where we left
off.
Naturally, I would be willing to reimburse them for their time and trouble,
though I anticpate finishing the job before I fly out. For anyone who has
never "researched" old-time radio, and lives within the Los Angeles area and
is able to keep up with a fast pace (literally), this would be an
interesting experience. Dates are August 29 and 30. Please let me know by
e-mail. Thanks!
Martin

Subject: Allan Reed/Little Rascals
Hello, all. I'm still working on the Allan Reed book.
If anyone has any Alan Reed radio goodies - anything
he appeared on besides Fred Allen - I'd love to hear
them. Especially guest appearances on dramatic series.
Also rare tv appearances. Anyone who helps will of
course get a mention in the book!
Also, I wondered if anyone here knows if the Little
Rascals/Our Gang appeared on much radio, particularly
Buckwheat. Buckwheat's son would like to put out a
book on his father and I wondered if there are any
radio credits for him.
Thanks!
