Subject: OTR article in the Emporia Gazette

Here's an interesting article about a comeback in popularity of OTR programs from someone who has just discovered what's out there.

He notes the continued popularity of imagination even in the very young for 'directing their own movies in their heads' and gets at the emotional appeal of dramatic radio.

over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

Subject: OTR soap operas: What about drinking?

When I was a kid, we got one of the first TVs in the neighborhood. Before
that, I remember listening to radio shows like "The Shadow", "Gangbusters"
etc. at night, and Arthur Godfrey.
I'm sure my mother listened to soap operas during the day, but I don't
remember them. However, I DO remember watching early soap operas on our 12"
Bendix [removed] and yes, many of the people in the stories smoked cigarettes
every [removed]
AND they drank like fishes. Seemed like every show had a scene in a living
room, wherein there was a bar in the corner, stocked with bottles and carafes
of liquor & wine. Often someone would get upset, and some other person would
offer them a drink - like an inch of some liquid in a glass, poured out of a
glass "jug" with a glass stopper.
We were upper-poor class people, and the only "liquor" we had was half-a-case
of National Bohemian beer (bottles, of course) in the refrigerator, so I was
mightily impressed by the rich people on the TV. I couldn't figure out,
though, why they couldn't just fill up the glasses with their "drinks", like
my parents did with their beer.
ANYHOW - My question is: Did characters in OTR soap operas seem to have bars
in all their houses, and did they imbibe, while smoking, like I remember from
early TV soaps?

For years, I've wondered what would happen, if one ate the bubblegum,
from an unopened pack of early 1980s baseball [removed]

;-)

After the initial crunch, it pretty much dissolves. Not much chew left
in
it.

Yes, I did chew the gum from a 1982 pack of Topps Baseball Cards, in
1998, if I recall correctly. There was no Cal Ripken Jr. card in it,

Subject: Jack Benny & Rodney Dangerfield

In listening to broadcasts of Jack Benny from the early 1940's, he makes
comments about a Rodney Dangerfield on numerous occasions and in a few
programs, Dangerfield appears as an old western cowboy. Is this the same
Dangerfield that was so popular in the 7-'s and 80's? Gary Schultz

Subject: FOTR Script Contest
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

For the [removed] script contest this year, the subject is "Sports." For
instance, it could be a dramatized 1930's adventure whose hero is a player on
a
team, and include excerpts from a radio play-by-play (short) in which the team
suffers a defeat, and another later on in which there's a great comeback, but
these are not rigid requirements.
No more than 6 in the cast, please (bit parts could be doubled). Script
should be a half-hour, and sponsor could be a laxative, a razor blade or some
other product from the '30's (a short commercial, with just billboard opening
and
closing.) Please note: double spaced script, no smaller than 12 point, ready
to produce.
First prize winner gets $200 and will be performed the following year; Second
prize is $100.
Submit scripts to: Dave Zwengler, 318 Plymouth Road, North Brunswick, NJ
08902. Deadline is August 31st, 2009
