On 30 October of 1938, the United States got a real scare. The Mercury
Theater broadcast a dramatization of the novel by H. G. Wells. /The War
Of The Worlds/, which presented the story of beings from Mars invading
the Earth.
The early portion of the program, accessible at War of the Worlds" 1938
Radio Broadcast - YouTube, proved quite convincing, particularly for
those who turned in after the show had started. Many listeners thought
that they were listening to actual newscasts, resulting in a nationwide
panic.
