The  vocal inflections of the
cast might give a clue as to whether they knew  something was up - on the
version I have, Orson's little speech at the end  sounds a little nervous.

That could be something as simple as Orson trying to cram in the entire
speech while watching the clock, making sure he didn't run out of time.
Networks were merciless toward radio programs that overran their allotted
time
slots, just ask Fred Allen.

Speaking of comedy, I've always heard that wisecrack about how "all the
intelligent people were listening to Charlie McCarthy."  So I should ask,  in
how many time zones did the Mercury Theater directly compete with the Chase
& Sanborn Hour that night?  Or did it?
