1942 The comic soap opera Clara, Lu 'n Em was revived on CBS (the
original show began in 1931 on NBC). Clara, Lu and Em were together
again for just a short while before vanishing into radio oblivion.
1947 Lassie debuted on ABC. It was a 15 minute show about an
extraordinary collie. Animal imitator, Earl Keen provided the whines and
other dog noises. The announcer was Charles Lyon; Marvin Miller and
Betty Arnold played Lassie's owners. The sponsor was Red Heart dog food.

1909 An SOS signal is transmitted for the first time in an emergency
when the Cunard liner SS Slavonia is wrecked off the Azores.
From Those Were The Days
1924 The first political convention on radio was presented. Graham
McNamee provided coverage of the Republican National Convention from
Cleveland, OH.
6/12
1947 Sergeant Preston of The Yukon went national for the first time.
The show, with the Canadian Mountie and his trusty dog, King, continued
on the radio until 1955, beginning on WXYZ Detroit in 1938. Sgt. Preston
was created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, who also created The
Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet.
1955 The first network radio show to be produced with no script, The
University of Chicago Round Table, was heard for the final time on NBC.
The program was the first network radio program to win the coveted
George Foster Peabody Award.
1955 "This is Monitor, a weekend program service of NBC Radio," was
heard for the first time. Notables such as Bill Cullen, Ed McMahon, Hugh
Downs, and Dave Garroway recited this line. It was a network cue to NBC
radio stations across the nation who carried the long form news,
entertainment and variety broadcast from New York City. Stations and
listeners who were "on the Monitor beacon" were entertained for six
hours or more each Saturday and Sunday night for nearly two decades.
NBC's Monitor was one of the last live network radio programs on the air.
6/13
1944 The wire recorder was patented by Marvin Camras.
6/14
1922 A [removed] President was heard on the radio for the first time.
President Warren G. Harding dedicated the Francis Scott Key Memorial and
was heard on WEAR in Baltimore.
1950 Harold Peary played the leading role of The Great Gildersleeve
one final time. Willard Waterman took Peary's place in the role.

Episode 124
"THE COCOANUT GROVE AMBASSADORS" WITH JIMMIE GRIER & HIS ORCHESTRA
Taking over this week for Gus Arnheim at the Cocoanut Grove in 1932 (by
way of Transco syndication) is Jimmie Grier and his orchestra. Jimmie
was known as "the musical host of the coast," and his orchestra
demonstrated his excellent musicianship. The orchestra was known for its
fine dance style and soloists such as Gogo de Lys, Harry Foster, Dick
Webster, Pinky Tomlin, and several others. Jimmie played several
instruments but it was his inventive arrangements, especially for Gus
Arnheim, that brought him recognition.
After Arnheim left the Cocoanut Grove, Grier formed his own band to
succeed him. Later Grier went on to play at the famous Biltmore Bowl and
after that to arrange for motion pictures and radio shows such as Jack
Benny's as well as to accompany Bing Crosby, the Boswells, and Russ
Columbo on recordings. He later spent time on the one-nighter circuit,
and in 1942 he enlisted in the Coast Guard to become Rudy Vallee's
assistant band leader of the official Coast Guard Band. When Rudy left
he became its leader before WWII's end, and after the war he eventually
entered the real estate business, much to our loss even today. Perhaps
Grier's most famous recording was "The Object of My Affection," one of
the biggest hit recordings in 1934 and composed by singer/musician Pinky
Tomlin.
We hear four fifteen minute "Cocoanut Grove Ambassadors" radio shows
this time featuring Grier's "music with a personality" from "happiness
headquarters" at the Grove, also known as the "famous rendezvous and the
rendezvous of the famous." The unidentified announcer claims to have a
note from famous actress Marion Davies at one point who wants to hear
Grier's great version of "Tiger Rag," and actor Jack Oakie requests "My
Love."
Indeed, Grier provides those great tunes and several others across
America'a "amber waves of radio," including "This Time It's Love," "Lady
Be Good," "Lying in the Hay," "Fresh As a Daisy," "Casa Loma Stomp" (a
terrifically "turbulent" arrangement), "Two Blue Eyes," "Tomorrow," "I
Couldn't Tell Them What to Do," and "Shadows on the Swanee." Grier's
theme song "Music in the Moonlight" begins and ends each show to send us
all fittingly off to dream land.
Among interesting Jimmie Grier You-Tube performances online is "One Hour
with You," sung nicely by Donald Novis, and which, of course, was the
tune that Eddie Cantor adopted and adapted as his radio theme song.

Subject: Duffy's Tavern
Folks, the new Duffy's Tavern book by Martin Grams is OUT. Check it out here:
[removed];filter_name=duffy&
product_id=743
If you'd like a review copy for your group, magazine, newsletter, etc.,
please let me know. It's a Massive book - the usual Grams cockroach killing
Bible - and you won't be disappointed.
I'm a big fan of Duffy. In fact, I'm working with Ed Jr. and the person who
owns all the DT scripts to release All of the scripts of the series over the
next few years. It's quite an undertaking, but I've always been a sucker for
radio scripts. :)
Thanks for reading. And again, thank you for all you've done to support
BearManor Media over these last 14 years.
