1937 The longest running detective show debuted. Mr. Keen, Tracer of
Lost Persons lasted until 1955. Three different actors played the title
role, Bennett Kilpack was Mr. Keen the longest, and Arthur Hughes saw
the final show. Phil Clark also played the part. There were many more
than three sponsors Anacin, Kolynos toothpaste, BiSoDol antacid
mints, Hill's cold tablets, Heet liniment, Dentyne, Aerowax, RCA Victor
and Chesterfield cigarettes. Some are long gone, some are still around,
some don't advertise on radio anymore, and some are not allowed to.

1939 Radio listeners welcomed The Right to Happiness on the NBC Blue
network. The 15 minute drama turned out to be one of the longest running
shows of its kind. It moved over to CBS in 1941, then back to NBC in
1942. Fourteen years later Right to Happiness returned to CBS where it
stayed until its last days in 1960. The show had a theme song, Song of
the Soul, and what seemed like a cast of thousands. It just took a lot
of different actors to play the continuing roles over a 21 year period.
1945 Barry Fitzgerald starred as Judge Barnard Fitz in His Honor, the

popular radio programs.

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 141
EDDIE HUBBARD'S JAZZ "CUPBOARD"
Tune in your radio for an Eddie Hubbard Show from July 20, 1990,
featuring some of Eddie's favorite jazz performers. This show includes
Eddie's Browsers' theme "Browsin'" in place of spot commercials, but the
show is Eddie's all the way.
Jonah Jones begins the show with "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads," and
Carmen McRea follows with "(What Can I Say) After I Say I'm Sorry" from
a performance recorded "live" at New York's jazz landmark known as Birdland.
Among my favorites are Jerry Weaver's Good Time Jazz Band doing
"California, Here I Come" and the Queen City Jazz Band with Joe Oliver's
Creole "Snake Rag." Also great are Bob Crosby's band on "Maryland, My
Maryland" and Count Basie doing "Five o' Clock Whistle."
Nancy Marano and Maxine Sullivan add their jazz versions of "Teach Me
Tonight" and "The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond," respectively.
Chet Atkins and Charlie Shavers are also featured, and Eddie fills in
final minutes of the hour with Neil Diamond's "Brooklyn Roads" and also
with artists Tony Bennett doing "Because of You" and Herb Alpert and the
Tijuano Brass performing "Flamingo."
Amazing is the fact that Tony is still going strong with recordings of
"Duets I and II" in 2011 and 2012 and in this year of 2014, at the age
of 88, a recording of jazz standards with a current pop star called
"Cheek to Cheek," 63 years after his first hit recording "Because of You.

Many thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for transferring and expert
restoration of the studio tape of this show for rebroadcast.

14-16
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I'm looking forward to this year's SPERDVAC Old-Time Radio Convention at the
Burbank Holiday Inn on Saturday, November 15.
Saturday evening I'll have the privilege of directing a hilarious installment
of THE BICKERSONS, starring the talented RICHARD HERD ("Seinfeld", "Golden
Girls") as John, and LISA VALENZUELA (star of the Troubadour Theatre Company -
[removed]) as Blanche.
Then I'll direct a great episode of MY FAVORITE HUSBAND, Lucille Ball's radio
sitcom on which my dad was the producer, director, and head writer. Tackling
Lucy's role will be the wonderful GLORIA McMILLAN, who my dad directed on "The
Baby Snooks Show," but who is best known as "Harriet Conklin" (Gale Gordon's
daughter and Richard Crenna's girlfriend) on "Our Miss Brooks." Lucy's husband
"George" will be JOHN WILDER, who acted opposite Lucille Ball on the original
MY FAVORITE HUSBAND broadcasts (playing the son of Lucy's next-door-neighbor,
"Mr. Wood" (Hans Conried)). RICHARD HERD will take Gale Gordon's role as
George's boss, "Mr. Atterbury," BEVERLY WASHBURN ("The Jack Benny Program,"
"Old Yeller") will be Lucy's best friend Iris Atterbury (originally Bea
Benaderet), and BART WILLIAMS will do his best impression of Frank Nelson. The
cast will also include STUFFY SINGER ("The Jack Benny Program") and IVAN CURY
(star of radio's "Bobby Benson & the B-Bar-B Riders").
Both shows are part of the SPERDVAC Saturday evening banquet program. Dinner
starts at 6:30pm, and the $50 ticket price includes a three-course meal and
all the after-dinner entertainment, including a "true crime" show (with a
twist I won't reveal), directed by the great PEGGY WEBBER and starring LEE
MERIWETHER ("Barnaby Jones," "Time Tunnel," "Mission Impossible"), and the
inimitable MARVIN KAPLAN ("Alice", "Top Cat", "Adam's Rib", "It's a Mad, Mad,
Mad, Mad World").
And before dinner, at 4:45pm, PEGGY WEBBER will reprise her role as the
original "Ma Friday" on Dragnet in an episode of the police drama directed by
Jack Webb's original partner, HERB ELLIS.
The Friday program includes an afternoon production of THE SHADOW, directed by
Michael James Kacey, and an after-dinner re-creation of THE LUX RADIO THEATER
production of Bob Hope's "The Lemon Drop Kid," starring the amazing CHUCK
McCANN in the title role.
I hope to see you there. Details and a registration form can be found at
