Subject: Re: Radio Comics

There were other comic strips that "came to radio." Shows that
originated in comic strips included Little Orphan Annie, Smilin' Jack,
Mandrake the Magician, Buck Rogers, and of course Dick Tracy.

Terry & The Pirates belongs on this list as well. So does Flash Gordon.

The only comic book that springs to mind is Superman.

The Blue Beetle was a comic book hero that also appeared in Radio.

Then there was the Green Lama. I'm not certain whether the Lama first
appeared in the Four Colored fantasy land or the pulps first, but The
Green Lama belongs on the list as well somewhere.

Best,
Mark Stratton

Subject: question bout Red Skelton

Hi all,

I was to a Blue Star blades episode of Red Skelton last night and noticed
he didn't say "God blesss" like he did in later shows or on tv. Does
anybody know when he started using that sign off line?

second

I am not a first generation, OTR listener, but I somehow recall in my
discussions that some programming was created in Buffalo, New York that
was either early tv or OTR. Am I remembering right or is it childhood
wishful thinking. I grew up in the NY southern teer, which would have
been part of the Buffalo listening area but moved to Rochester when I was
14. Thanks for the help.

Subject: Radio Crossovers

Rick Keating observed: "But I'm not aware of any adventure, mystery,
suspense,
western, detective, etc. shows mentioning characters from another show
on the network, or featuring an
appearance by same.

"Candy Matson, YU 2-8209" as written by Monty Masters, made frequent
use of radio "inside" humor, as I discuss in my book "Private
Eyelashes: Radio's Lady Detectives" recently released by Bear Manor
Media. Here's a sample:

In the Christmas episode of 1949 entitled "Jack Frost Missing" (of
which the audio copy is in circulation) Candy received a request for
assistance from the head of of a large department store, whose Santa's
assistant, a character named Ralph Jordan, has mysteriously
disappeared. In her first interview with the client, Mr. Burke, in his
office, the following conversation takes place:

Candy: Now, our subject is what?

Burke: A man called Jordan.

Candy: That's on another network.

Burke: I beg your pardon?

Candy: Oh, I'm sorry. Now, what about Jordan?

It's a shame that although every one of the 94 episodes that aired
1949-51 were recorded on disk, nearly all have disappeared over the
years. At present, only 12 regular shows, plus the audition and a 1952
"reprise audition" have surfaced.

Laura Leff wrote:

Yup. In 1968, Jack donated these, his scripts, and a lot of paperwork,
photos, awards, and miscellaneous ephemera to UCLA. I am slowly making my
way through that collection over the course of years.

During an interview on WCAU in Philadelphia in 1986 Joan Benny said that she
had donated lots of scripts which she had inherited to the U. of Wyoming.
How much of Benny's stuff was donated to the U of Wyoming. And why
Wyoming? :))

Subject: Jack Benny and Waukegan

Yesterday, Memorial Day I went to Waukegan to see the statue of Jack Benny,
quite impressive. However, on one of the plaques that are there it stated that
Waukegan is the birth place of Jack Benny, Laura . . . tell me it ain't so. He
was born in Chicago. Did the city fathers succumb to wishful thinking or
didn't they do the research?

Subject: WWII Gas Rationing

Just catching up on back issues of the digest after being out of pocket
and found comments on the subject interesting. The main reason for gas
rationing was to limit the amount of milage to keep tire wear down as
rubber was in shorter supply than gas. If you had a worn out or damaged
tire, you had to get confirmation from a garage that it could not be
fixed or recapped with reclaimed rubbber, then you applied to the
rationing board for authorizatioin to purchase a new one. Even if
approved, you still might not be able to find a dealer with a new tire
in the size you needed.
