PS--Thanks to everyone who came to Cincinnati! What a
great weekend we had. The feeling of community that
we have at our get-together is overwhelming.

What a treat it was! The love amongst attendees is just unbelievable.
As usual, the convention was the highlight of the year for Kathy, Karen,
and me. Thanks to everyone who was there.

A sad note: Attendance was the lowest I've ever seen. The banquet was
held in a single room - they didn't expand into the dealer room, because
there weren't enough people to need to do that. I don't think there were
more than 40 people at the first show.

Karen hasn't yet written her convention report. I will let you know when
it is posted.

The episode of Suspense that was done is a pretty funny show. Jack Benny
played a Martian. You can hear it here:

This convention was great as always. The only problem is it goes too
quickly. I managed to spend 400-something in the dealer's room, but came
away with lots of CDs, two backup reel decks, some ETs, a few reels,
Martin's Sam Spade book, and a couple of movies. I also was fortunate in
the raffle - winning 7 raffle prizes. Most of the small group of ETs I
bought turned out to be from the Liberty Broadcasting System - I had never
actually heard any programming from the LBS before. I was thrilled to find
a long-time want; a good copy of the Hermit's Cave "The Crimson Hand.",
from Terry. Unfortunately, no one had my pet project - Charlie Chan and
the Landini Mystery.

There was all kinds of stuff going on - a couple of recreations (before the
Saturday night ones) and even Neal Ellis doing a live convention remote on
Yesterday USA.

The food at the Saturday dinner was pretty good; the buffet idea was a
really good one. The entertainment was wonderful, as always, and the award
winners were all very deserving.

It was fantastic to meet with old friends again, and meet some new
people. It's about the only time of the year I can meet face-to-face with
people who actually care about the same hobby I do. I'm looking forward to
next year!

I hope everyone survived the chicken run (the blind entrance to I-275
because of construction). That construction is lasting till 2010, by the
way. It was rainy and near 2 [removed] when I headed home Saturday, so I ended
up taking the street way.

See you there next year!

Subject: Best Starting Episodes

I'd love to see people list their favorite episodes of OTR programs here.

If I wanted to introduce a non-fan to a particular show, what are good
episodes to start with that will make a great impression?

For example, Phil Harris and Alice Faye: The Cadillac in the Swimming
Pool.

If you don't know the official title or original air date, I'll bet
others will quickly supply it.

Thanks!

Two or three weeks ago there was a post to the digest about radio actor
Jeff David having had a heart attack and not expected to come out of it ...
Can someone shed some light on his current condition?

Alas, Dan (& gang), Jeff passed away. VERY shortly after being stricken, I
believe.

A talented man to be at mic with, and a fun man to break bread with.

Subject: RE: History of the transcription companies

Randy wrote recently:

Has anyone done a book, article or other published material that dives
into the history of Transco and its shows? There's a lot out there about
"Cinnamon Bear", but I'd like to know about some of their other work. I'm
really interested in some of the business side of OTR history as well, so
I'd be curious about that aspect of the company. Syndicators played a big
role in early radio and television, but they don't seem to get as much
attention as the networks from historians of the era.

In regards to Randy's question specifically about the Transco company,
doesn't the Radio Archives have a large collection of Transco discs that they
acquired a few years back and are gradually releasing to their membership?
That might be a good starting point for anyone doing further research.

I certainly agree with Randy's point that the syndicators get short shrift in
the OTR histories. There really is a crying need for a detailed
history/discography of all of the transcription companies. The only thing I
know of that even comes close is the dissertation on early transcription
recording that Mike Biel did for his doctorate back in the Sixties. There
have been some transcription discographies, but they've dealt with the music
program side and not with the dramatic program side.

The encyclopedia of radio horror programs that I'm working on does try to
provide some information on the subject where particular shows clearly relate
to the genres under discussion (horror, ghost story, weird-mystery or
weird-menace). The first volume goes up to 1940, and some of the
transcription series that I'll have entries for include (off the top of my
head) DO YOU BELIEVE IN GHOSTS?, THE HAUNTED HOUSE OF KILDARE, THE GHOST
SHIP, WEIRD TALES, GUESTS OF DOOM, SWAMP CAESAR, BLACK MAGIC, THE HAWK, DR.
SATAN, Transco's STRANGE ADVENTURES IN STRANGE LANDS, and, of course, old
standbys long in circulation such as MOON OVER AFRICA and THE SHADOW OF FU
MANCHU. As well, some Australian transcription series like THE WITCH'S TALE
and TALES FROM THE PEN OF EDGAR ALLAN POE.

But there's still a lot of ground to cover, and a lot of transcription
companies that came and went in those days. It's an area ripe for research.

Subject: Passing mention of Bob Hope

The chatty, name-dropping James Lipton of "Inside the Actor's Studio" was
interviewed himself last month by Elvis Mitchell on "The Treatment". It's
downloadable as an MP3 podcast. I find Lipton a bit snooty and
insufferable, but his personal stories about Christopher Reeve and about
his own time as a broke actor in Paris are very interesting.

At the 24 minute mark he pays tribute to Bob Hope as a big influence on his
life. He doesn't really give enough specifics, but Lipton is currently
promoting his new book, "Inside Inside", and he may give more details
there. If anyone reads this, I'd love to hear more.
