Regarding Elizabeth's nomination. Not only does she know OTR, she knows how
to relate it to the rest of us like few others.

Subject: Re: ILAM HERMIT

As an ILAM fan, I think it's interesting to learn the provenance of the
Hermit tapes. I never knew from where exactly they came.

I'm one of those few lucky enough to own an ILAM ET also - it was
generously given to me by a kind member of my local OTR club, in exachange
for transferring some America First ETs (from where the ET
orginated). Unfortunately, the engineer back then had keyed up the discs
(2 sides- 30 minute episode) to prevent them from being played. It took a
heck of a lot of time to piece together the dub - but I finally did it, and
captured almost every word. It's 410630, Eight Kinds of Murder, and I've
since put a somewhat cleaned up copy in circulation. I never cared much
for Hermit, but reading My Beloved Is A Vampire was pretty fun - it's a
pretty good storyline.

I specialize in detective shows, and now the only one (of the major and
semi-major shows) I'm missing ET-wise is Barrie Craig.

I've also branched out into old radio sets - in fact I'm buying a few more
restored sets this weekend - it'll be fun to put some ILAM on them via the
SSTRAN transmitter.

Thank you Jim, and Dave Amaral, and all the people who have helped to put
ILAM episodes into circulation.

So, I guess this makes the major circulating episodes breakdown as thus:
(someone correct me if I'm wrong)
Jim Harmon/Dave Ameral - the majority of circulating ILAMs
-collector in NY whose name I don't know, the few 51 and 52 episodes
(Murder is the Word For it, Circle M, Bride of the Werewolf)
-Dave Goldin Murder in Turquoise Pass (8-22-50)
-Ted Kneebone 5-12-44
-Ed Carr misc. 1940 and 41 eps.

Who originated the harder-to-get Turquoise Pass episodes that aren't in
that great of sound? I'd like to find a good copy of those. Also who
originated 5-30-44 "You Can't Pin A Murder on Nevada"?

Subject: RE: Repeating Shows

Andrew Steinberg asked:
 > . . . Did national shows broadcast repeat shows without announcing
 > that it was a repeat? If so, when did this practice begin?

There were several popular radio series that rebroadcast
transcriptions of previously aired episodes. One of those was GUNSMOKE.

There were over two hundred network straight repeat broadcasts of
GUNSMOKE episodes; however, the repeat broadcasts did not occur during
prime-time hours during its original CBS 1952-1961 run.

These repeat airings by transcription occurred on Saturdays at 12:30
PM Eastern Time (9:30 AM Pacific Time) over the CBS network between mid
October, 1954 and early February 1959. They were repeat airings of the most
recently aired prime-time network episode. (During the time period July 09,
1955 through October 08, 1955, GUNSMOKE aired only on Saturdays at 12:30 PM
(Eastern Time) and 9:30 AM (Pacific Time) with no Prime-Time broadcast time
slot.)

The Saturday morning/early afternoon GUNSMOKE re-airings were not
generally announced as repeat broadcasts. Occasional mention was made
during the prime-time GUNSMOKE broadcasts of the existence of these Saturday
morning/early afternoon repeat airings.

There were also 66 GUNSMOKE scripts that were produced at least
twice during its CBS run. Usually, these new productions had at least a few
cast or crew differences from the original production's cast and crew.
Frequently, dialog and scene changes made in new production of a script. If
the new production was in a different length broadcast time slot than that
of the original production, changes could be substantial and entail the
addition or deletion of entire scenes and characters.

The preceding information is from the monograph "Gunsmoke The Myth
of the Prime-Time Repeats" by Stewart Wright, Copyright 2005.

You can find out more information about GUNSMOKE at The Nostalgia
Pages Forum! hosted by our own Charlie Summers at:

Signing off for now,

Stewart

Subject: OTR fan Hall of Fame

Any collection that honors heroes of old time radio collecting has to
include Max Schmid and his "Golden Age of Radio" on WBAI. Max has kept
old time radio alive in New York for over 25 years (I stopped counting
after 25). As Jay Hickerson says every year, he's responsible for
bringing in more people to the FOTR than anyone else.
And then there's the whole Jean Shepherd thing. Max may be second only
to "A Christmas Story" in keeping the genius of Jean Shepherd in the
public consciousness.

Subject: Repeat Episodes

Andrew Steinberg wonders?

 > Sometimes I come across radio episodes with different dates that are exact
 > duplicates and the second one is labeled repeat. I don't mean repeated
 > scripts, I mean the exact same recording.

OTR didn't as rule repeat programs, but syndicated series were sent to
various radio station and were aired at different dates and times. So the
episodes could be from different radio stations.

Amos and Andy, in the 40's repeated the best show of last year. As example
an episode called "The Baby" originally aired on 12/4/45 was repeated on
1/1/46 because it was decided it was the bst show of 1945. They did for
several years.

Amos & Andy also had a Christmas show that was repeated many .

Gunsmoke had a Christmas episode that was repeated every Christmas. Richard
Diamond, Private Detective did "A Christmas Carol" at Christmas using the
cast of Diamond.

It is my opinion that Christmas repeats were to give the cast etc a break
for the holidays.

How many years did Lionel Barrymore repeat "A Christmas Carol" 5 or 6 ?

"Sorry Wrong Number" Suspenses classic was repeated 7 times, live, with
Agnes Morehead, It was always announced that it was a repeat because the
listeners asked for it.

Suspense repeated several shows with the same script, but different actors,
like "On A Country Road' , "The Visitor", "To Find Help" and more. These
were good stories worth repeating.

All Jack Benny programs from 9/29/57 until 6/28/58 were repeats of his last
two seasons 55-56 & 56-57. The Benny program was also on AFRS & TV with
different dates and no commercials.

These are example of repeats, there are probably more especially in the
1950's when radio was being repleced by TV.
Maybe one of the real OTR experts may have a better explanation for repeats.
Frank McGurn.
