Martha is the person who told Bruce Jenkins the story of how Gordon came
to write Goodbye. If you haven't read the Jenkins book, sneak into your
nearest bookseller--it's the very first chapter.

Unusual ... since Stacy Harris' wife divorced him to marry William Conrad.

Subject: One Man's Family--plastic christmas tree
episode
A good friend remembers an episode in which Father Barber is somewhat
upset at the prospect of having a plastic Christmas tree. Perhaps he
could read into the future some 20-30 years? Does anyone know if this
episode exists? I would love to give it as a Christmas present to my
frioend.
Many thanks

Subject: Squeekie on old-time radio
I just came across an old radio script that actually has a three-word,
spoken one-liner from someone named "Squeekie" and the band then began to
play to the tune of Squeekie. Was there a radio program that had a
character named Squeekie? (Probably CBS).

Subject: William Conrad directs
Regarding William Conrad directing a film with Stacy Harris in the cast . .
. I am not surprised. William Conrad directed a bunch of movies and TV
shows, and often used friends from the radio broadcasting days for the cast.
In the HAVE GUN-WILL TRAVEL episode "Genesis," Conrad not only directed
and played a role, but Parley Baer also played a role. For the movie TWO ON
A GUILLOTINE, a number of radio actors and actresses played roles.

OTR news to pass on . . .
Ted Davenport's RADIO MEMORIES is closing its doors. Ted, for anyone who
hasn't attended the OTR Conventions, is probably the last MAJOR audio
cassette vendor for old-time radio. For those who have not switched to CD
or MP3 or other formats, this comes as a blow and sad news. Ted is a good
friend and he has been very supportive for the OTR hobby through donations
and other venues.
If you have been meaning to purchase any of his offerings, please do so now.
The following below is pasted from the front page of his web-site,

"At the end of the year, December 31, 2006, Radio Memories will close its
doors for good. We hope that we have helped the OTR collector and wish our
past customers well. We thank you for your past support, but now we must
move on.
The collection will continue to grow in the format that I have used all
these years, and if if you questions, comments or require information
regarding radio history, please feel free to contact me at website address
and phone number below. Ted."

I would think Proquest's Sales and Marketing department would be
interested in any comments that could lead to improving the
reputation of their product. After all, a little information with a
good index is better than a lot of information and a poor index. We
have plenty of the latter.
The problem is not 'improving' ProQuest in the case of radio schedules. In
the last couple of years I have often searched programs for many reasons and
a search on a program name brought up most of the radio schedule listings.
Now it does not bring up any programs' listing in the schedules. It's like
they have programmed search to omit radio schedules. It certainly does
require "creative searching", a good way to describe it by Robert Birchard.

Subject: Shortwave OTR
One of the aspects of OTR that seems to be overlooked is shortwave
OTR. Shortwave was a big thing in the '30s and during the war. Are there
any experts on German (English broadcasts) Overseas Radio during the
war? I'm listening to the CBS D-Day Broadcast day, and while interesting,
it seems that German Overseas radio scooped them insofar was battle news
was concerned on that day. It would be fascinating to listen to the German
Broadcast Day too, but I doubt the recordings exist anymore. Once one cut
out the propaganda, German Overseas radio on D-Day seemed to give out more
actual battle information - was this an isolated case or was that generally
the case?
It would also be quite interesting to hear pre-war shortwave broadcasts too.
