Subject: Superman Dines

Ron Sayles asks,

Did Kal-El alias Clark Kent alias Superman have to eat?

Certainly. During the radio phase, I suspect his diet was mainly
Kellogg's Pep (the sponsor).

One problem in any dramatization is that only highlights of any
character's activities are presented. The only time anyone was likely to
be portrayed eating would be if the action related somehow to the plot.
Someone eating on a Mr. Keen show, for instance, would be likely to die
in the act, doubtless a poisoning. Naturally, on a Nero Wolfe show,
eating might have been portrayed, as Wolfe was a famous gourmet, but even
that would have to be plot related for it to be portrayed on the show.

Virtually every character on OTR shows doubtless brushed his or her
teeth, washed his or her hands, and bathed, but, again, unless one or
another of these actions related to the story, it's doubtful any of these
actions would be heard.

Superman didn't have to eat. But he enjoyed eating because his super-senses

Did Kal-El alias Clark Kent alias Superman have to eat?

I don't think anyone knows, because none of the episode took place
during his meal times. No MacDonald's in those days

What I wonder did Superman perspire, I don't ever remember Lois saying
,while flying over clouds in his arms, "Superman you have BO you should
use Lifeboy Soap". Did he Bathe?

Another question is never took off the Superman uniform, did he
[removed] than one? It must have gotten soiled during life saving efforts.

When he returned to Clark Kent he appears with his suit shirt & tie with
out a wrinkle, after bing dropped in a phone booth. How did he do that.

Do anyone know where Clark Kent lived in Metropolis?.
I stay awake pondering these vital questions.

Subject: Howdy Doody on the radio

Andrew Steinberg asked about the Howdy Doody radio show, saying he has the
Dec 24, 1953 2nd anniversary program. I have from the discs that were at
Northwestern a full one hour program from Feb 23,1952; the second half hours
of Aug 9 and 16, 1952; and one undated excerpt from the end of the first hour
approx Jan 1952. When I was a kid I had outgrown the TV show by then but
listened to the radio show every week. I specifically remember that I was
annoyed that there was one week I missed it.

While the TV show was live, the radio show was transcribed. I believe the
two books on the program note that the radio segments were done after the TV
shows. Segments were bridged with a catalog of songs that Bob Smith had
recorded. The one I remember most is Loch Lomand but none of the programs I
have include this song. When my wife and I visited Scotland I made a point
that we go to Loch Lomand. It's not easy to get to unless you have a car.
The famous blooper where the kid says that he f*rted is an out-take from the
radio tapings. The incident was one of the many faked recordings on one of
the Kermit Schafer's early Pardon My Blooper albums until after many years
Smith felt sorry for Schafer and gave him the actual recording, and the real
one is on the later albums.

Hi gang,

Irving Brecher, one of the dozen radio comedy writers I interviewed
for my book "The Laugh Crafters," has a new book of his own coming
out this fall titled "The Wicked Wit of the West."

I've seen an advance copy, and I recommend it. He talks a lot about
writing for Milton Berle, "The Life of Riley" (which he created), and
of course the Marx Brothers. Irv is the only writer with sole
screenplay credit on a Marx Brothers film; he wrote two and lived to
tell about it (he's 94 years old).

Did Kal-El alias Clark Kent alias Superman have to eat?

It probably depends on which incarnation of Superman you are looking
at and which era. For awhile in the 1960s, until the mid-1980s, in
the comic books, he was pretty indestructible. While I don't
remember any specific mention at the time, it may well be that he
didn't have to eat.

But in the early 1950s, in the first Superman comic book that I ever
saw, there was a story where the villains had caught Superman with a
piece of kryptonite. In later stories, prolonged exposure to
kryptonite was itself fatal to Superman, but at that time, it simply
made him too weak to move. The criminals decided that while Superman
was indestructible, he had to eat and drink like everyone else, so
they just kept him there, intending to starve him.

The narration says that his body becomes increasingly emaciated, and,
in delerium, he happens to focus his heat vision on the floor under
the kryptonite. This burns a hole in the floor, causing the
kryptonite to fall to the floor below. Superman manages to recover
at least enough to make a rope from sheets and his cape and get out
the window. He doesn't seem to remember who he is or that he can
fly, etc., and for awhile, he only remembers who he is when the moon
is out. I believe some version of this story may have also appeared
on the radio show.

When did Bill Johnstone start as the Shadow? I thought it was 1939, but I
don't have Dunning's "_On the Air_ handy at the moment to check if he gave a
1939 date; and Jerry Haendiges' log say Johnstone started in September 1938.
Thing is, I thought Orson Welles had stopped portraying the Shadow _after_
the Oct. 30, 1938 _Mercury Theatre_ "War of the Worlds" broadcast, when the
whole country now knew the name behind that voice (presumaby like the later
_superman_ broadcasts, where Bud Collyer wasn't initially credited, the
makers of _The Shadow_ didn't want an actor to be associated with their star
character). Is that incorrect? Did Orson Welles actually leave the role of
the Shadow _before_ "War of the Worlds" made him a household name?

I ask because I recently bought the Radio Spirits' collection "The Shadow
Radio's Greatest Man of Mystery." The episode titled "Death Stalks the
Shadow" is dated 10/9/38 (a date Haendiges confirms in his log), and while it
sounds like it was recorded by a machine with low batteries, it's Johnstone's
voice. Which either means the date's wrong, or whatever source (Dunning or
someone else) that apparently gave Johnson's start date as 1939 is wrong.
Does anyone know which?

Actually, I can see 1939 being wrong, given Welles' sudden notoriety. I could
see Johnstone starting with the first broadcast in November, if Welles did
leave the part as a result of "War of the Worlds."

One write-up I saw referred to him as the last-known survivor/participant of

I remember when helping Jim Cox (along with Claire connelly and Jim Widner) do

Of course, adding to the confusion was the contemporaneous publisher with the

Would some nice and kind OTR historian out there in the ether clarify the
