(Playing New Year's catchup, [removed])

 From: "Martin Grams, Jr." _mmargrajr@[removed]_
(mailto:mmargrajr@[removed])

In 1938, the GOOD NEWS program
featured an adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" with Reginald Owen, Gene
Lockhart and Kathleen Lockhart.

Does anyone have a decent copy of this to swap? And, can those who've heard
it tell me: does it seem to be a stand-alone radio production, or one of
those early examples of using a film's soundtrack, as MGM did elsewhere?

Barrymore
was originally slated to play the role for the movie, but due to illness,
Owen did that role.

He did indeed.

Oddly, Barrymore does make an appearance on that show,
which makes  me wonder how ill he [removed];

For years, his illness has been used as the excuse why he didn't do his
own RADIO turn as Scrooge that year -

When Orson Welles did his version that
same year, he comments that Barrymore was unable to do it<

- but a I've since heard a reason I give more credence [removed] The story
goes, that it was Lionel himself who suggested Owen for the film - and that
it
was a desire to not steal his thunder that season, that caused Barrymore to
take this rare one-year sabbatical from his two-decade tenure in the role.

Best,
-Craig

Subject: OTR Club Memberships

For anyone seeking to explore Old-Time Radio into the new [removed]

The Old Time Radio Club in New York is now accepting year-long memberships.
Cost is $18 for the year and besides "all the usual refinements" you get a
nice monthly newsletter. It's like paying $[removed] per issue for their magazine.

The Metro Washington Old-Time Radio Club is also accepting memberships, and
the cost varies depending on where you live (inside or outside the [removed] area).
They have a nice monthly membership meeting which I attended in August. The
web-site for their membership is [removed]

I mention this because it's easy for clubs to accept new memberships at the
beginning of the calendar year instead of the middle of the year, where the
cost differs. So send in your renewals or club dues. It's cheap and the
monthly newsletters are worth the price.

Bob Burchett, founder/owner/guru of the Cincinnati Old Time Radio
Convention, has sent out his flyer about this year's convention. I've
posted it here:

Basically, same hotel as last year (the Atrium), Special Guests are Bob
Hastings, Rosemary Rice, and Esther Geddes. And this year, NO BANQUET.

I've set up a bulletin board expressly for the Cincinnati Convention,
where you can talk with others about how to get there, what it's like,
gossip about other attendees, etc. It's here:

Craig, I'm fairly certain there was also a Carol broadcast in December,
1948.
I was sick as a dog for most of that school year (I was seven) and Dad
tried to cheer me up with the broadcast.

Thanks for sharing that great memory! Which according to this site, seems
to be spot-on:

(Jog any further memory?)

It was the first time I'd ever heard of Carol, Dickens or Barrymore.

Not the last, I hope?

Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA: Radio Once More Guest Friday Night

Folks;

In an apparent attempt to get their Live365 radio station cancelled, the
hosts of Radio Once More, Ken Stockinger and Neal Ellis, have invited Your
Obedient Servant to guest on their program this Friday evening, January 22nd,
at 9:00pm Eastern Standard Time.

Please join us at that time, when we will attempt to answer the question,
"What the heck is HE doing here?" Check out [removed] for
complete details and to listen in.

Not long ago, somebody here was asking about decent online newspaper
databases. My local public library subscribes to something called "America's
GenealogyBank" which now includes a pretty good selection of "Historical
Newspapers," mostly from the northeastern [removed], along with other documents.
Like [removed], it's not perfect but it does have a few
interesting newspapers from the vintage radio era. Here's some info:

[removed]

One paper is the Springfield, Massachusetts _Republican_ where the radio
editor, circa 1934-35, turns out to be Norman Corwin. I'm guessing he writes
a good deal of the copy, too, since the laconic comments on programs and
offbeat headlines and photo captions often sound Corwinesque.

On the Sunday radio page, he writes a column ("Radiosyncrasies") under a pen
name (Vladimir Shrdlu). It starts out as a jokey radio column, typical of its
era, but, after a few weeks, evolves into longer, more coherent pieces. Many
are scathing critiques of various aspects of the industry; everything from
the "awesome stupidity" of fan mail to censorship and state propaganda.

Corwin being Corwin, he also drops a lot of puns, takes liberal political
positions, and writes things like "The Ballad of Mortimer Mope," an entire
column in verse about the rise and fall of a radio announcer. Occasionally,
he even draws a cartoon.

Subject: African-American radio casts

I'm looking for examples of shows that had both all-black or nearly all-black
casts and featured recurring characters from episode to episode, not
anthology shows like Destination Freedom or New World Comin. I've uncovered
one broadcast on NBC in 1933 (no recordings, unfortunately) and would like to
compare it to similar shows.

Not to forget the program "Unshackled" which is still being produced out
of Chicago.

Not forgotten at all, friend Mike. I spoke of that with the late Jack
Bivans at the FOTR he attended a few years back; he worked on the show. I
then
spoke to the folks in Chicago about joining them too, if I was ever out
that way.

I never hear it mentioned much, but it has to be the longest running
radio drama series. It started in 1950

My only guess is, that it gets "niched" out because it's a "religious"
show.

and new episodes are being aired today.

It's an amazing acheivement. And the last episodes I heard were solid, and
very much still in the Network Era style (of course they would be, as the
chain is unbroken in this case.)

Best,
-Craig
