Sean Dougherty <seandd@[removed]; writes: "Sad news to report once
again - Gale Storm of My Little Margie has died at 87. She was a fun guest
at Friends of Old Time Radio on several occassions and was as delightful in
person as she was on stage. . ."

The July, 1973 edition of "The Golden Age of Radio," as broadcast by WTIC,
Hartford, CT, featured Gale Storm and Barbara Britton. You can hear the
whole interview, and excerpts from their radio work, on "The Golden Age of
Radio" with Dick Bertel and Ed Corcoran. You can also hear other full-hour
shows, extra features, and 42 one-hour episodes of "A One Night Stand with
the Big Bands" with Arnold Dean interviewing and playing the music of Ray
McKinley, Gene Krupa, Sy Oliver, and many other Big Band Greats. Tune in any

Subject: Ladies last?

Joe Mackey reminded us that "Wendy Warren and the News" debuted in
June 1947 and its unique characteristic was that a real news program,
about 3 minutes worth, opened the show. However A. Joseph Ross,
relying only on his memory, challenges this statement and claims the
newscast was at the end of the show and was actually delivered by
"Wendy." Fortunately, Attorney Ross cautions us "But I could be
mistaken."

And indeed he [removed]

The exact format of this series is set forth in at several reliable
OTR books, including Jim Cox' s "The Great Radio Soap Operas" and my
own, "Private Eyelashes: Radio's Lady Detectives." Every program
started off with Florence Freeman (as Wendy) greeting the
audience,"Hello, folks, this is Wendy Warren with news reports from
the woman's world. But first, here's Douglas Edwards with the latest
headlines." CBS correspondent Edwards gave actual news bulletins for
about 2 minutes, before turning the microphone back to "Wendy"
usually saying something like, "And now here's Wendy Warren with news
of interest to women."

Wendy provided about one minute of "women's news" and signed off.
Supposedly off-mike (but still on script) Edwards and "Wendy" briefly
discussed their upcoming weekends or some other innocent topic.
Another variation would be for "Wendy" to introduce "Bill Flood," her
announcer who would begin the commercial. ("Bill Flood" was actually
Hugh James.) After saying good-bye to Edwards (or James) "Wendy"
quickly got back into whatever the plot had in store for her in this
continuing soap opera.

The whole opening, with commercial, was usually under five minutes,
leaving about 10 minutes for the actual drama. When the 15 minutes
was up, it ended with the closing commercial, not "Wendy" reporting
the news.

Hello all:

I recently discovered Adam Graham's podcast with the original [removed] While
I understand the audio quality is extremely variable, I had a couple of
questions about the timing of the series.

[removed] On what date was the episode broadcast where Joe is told that Ed Romero
has died?

[removed] How long after the answer to #1 did Frank Smith become Joe's partner?

[removed] Is anyone familiar with the episode where a suspect has supposedly been
shot four times in the chest and the detectives can't find him -- where Hal
Gibney says at the end, "As of this date, that investigation is continuing"?

Hope someone can [removed]
