Subject: Nostalgia Expo - Cincinnati - May 16-17
Fellow Digesters-
Responding to Charlie Summers' subtle prompt, let me tell you a
little about the upcoming Nostalgia Expo in Cincinnati. When Bob
Burchett announced that the 2012 Cincinnati Oldtime Radio and Nostalgia
Convention would be the last one after nearly three decades his loyal
audience was determined that somehow we should carry on. In a moment of
sheer recklessness I agreed to try to step into Bob's enormous shoes and
carry on the tradition. Thus a new convention was born. It is being
presented under the auspices of American Radio Theater, Inc. which is a
501c3 non-profit so donations should be tax deductible. Hint Hint.
We had our first Nostalgia Expo last May and those who attended
probably didn't notice very much difference format-wise from what went
before. We are trying to broaden our appeal - hence the emphasis on the
nostalgia element - but we also want to stay true to the old
convention's radio roots. Our second annual Expo is fast approaching
and will take place on May 16-17 at the Crowne Plaza Blue Ash, 5901
Pfeiffer Rd. in Cincinnati.
Guests this year include Jon Provost who was "Timmy" on the
"Lassie" television show. We've obtained permission to re-create a
Lassie radio program. Yes, Lassie was on radio. Don Ramlow, who is in
charge of pulling all of the recreations together has married two 15
minute episodes into a single half hour program which will cap off our
festivities on Saturday night.
Also joining us will be Beverly Washburn, who has been a frequent
guest at other oldtime radio conventions, and who has a long list of tv
and movie credits. Ivan Cury will be returning this year as well. Ivan
is well known to OTR fans as Bobby Benson of the B-Bar-B and was a big
hit last year.
Friday will feature a recreation of The Magnificent Montague
performed by The Chicago Group Players and directed by Randy Larson.
They're a talented bunch and were very well received when they performed
for us last year.
I'm also looking forward to some fun and informative
presentations. W. Gary Wetstein will present "From Flirtation Act to
Love Nest: The Evolution of Burns and Allen" and Daryl McCullough will
present "Zorro: 100 Years of Swashbuckling Adventure." There will be
door prizes at many of the presentations and I can tell you that Daryl
has procured some really nice Zorro swag to hand share with attendees.
Daryl has also written a Zorro audio drama especially for the convention
which will be performed on Saturday afternoon. Our thanks to ZPI, Inc.
for granting permission for us to do the live Zorro show.
I could run on and on but this is getting long already. You can
learn more at the website: [removed] where you can
download a convention schedule in pdf format and even pre-register via
Paypal. It's dirt cheap at $15/day. If you prefer to pay at the door
we have a wonderful group of volunteers who will be manning the
registration desk and who would be happy to welcome you to the convention.
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot! ;-) Charlie and daughter Katie will
be conducting interviews with Beverly Washburn and Jon Provost on Friday
for use on their Summers Time podcast. And if you'd like to get a taste
of what it was like last year, their conversations with Bob Hastings and
Ivan Cury are available for download right now at

Enough from me. Check out the website! I hope to see many of you
in Cincinnati in a little less than two weeks!

In the mid to late 1950s CBS ran a one hour "Saturday night Country Style,"
with live 30 minute pickups from six radio barn dances still being broadcast.
Each barn dance was featured once every three weeks.
I've been contacted by the current "Wheeling Jamboree" reincarnation seeking
copies of the CBS "WWVA Jamboree"episodes.

Subject: Roy Bright, RIP
In case the mention was overlooked, Roy Bright passed away a few months ago.
He was a frequent attendee and vendor at a number of old time radio
conventions, most notably the Windy City Pulp and Paper Show and the
Cincinnati Old-Time Radio Convention, the latter now known as the Cincinnati
Nostalgia Expo. Having recently helped his widow clean through his
collection, it was discovered that he was one of the earliest folks to
compile broadcast logs on radio programs from radio scripts in archives.
Letters to and from individuals directly involved with old time radio include
correspondence from Richard Webb, Carlton E. Morse, Lum and Abner, etc. And
many of those contacts provided him with script titles and dates. Sadly, none
of the logs are dated but these appear to be about the time Ray Stanich left
his contribution to the preservation of OTR.
Roy's collection of radio programs left behind is extensive. It ranges from
reel to reels, audio cassettes and CDs, magazines and books. His books and
CDs will be available for sale at Cincinnati this year. His widow wants to
"clean house" so to speak. Rather than bring my usual inventory to Cincinnati
this year, I am devoting most of my table space for Roy's collection of books
and CDs. I feel it's a bit tacky to put up a sign with a photo of Roy, his
birth year and death year, on the tables. But in the past there have been
vendors who passed away and word spread early in advance to let attendees
know that the collection was being liquidated. Roy participated in round
robins in the early 1980s so much of his collection is early generation.
As for Roy's audio cassettes, the collection is too large to take to a
convention but a PDF file containing photographs representing the audio
cassette collection is available for the asking. Simply drop me a line off
digest. The contact info is included with the pdf, should anyone want to
contact his widow after looking over the pdf.
Martin
