Dear Folks-

As some of you know, I've been encouraging Arthur Anderson to contribute to
these esteemed pages. He's always interested in a  report of the doings here;
he's mulling over the idea of an autobiography; and, though he's not
"computerized," he's an avid word processor. I've told him how much we all
enjoyed
dear departed Harry Bartell's screeds. So, perhaps the essay below moves

To Whom It May Concern:

Thanks for allowing a non-internet user the privilege of your pages, via
Craig Wichman. Re the future path of Friends of Old-Time Radio, as
discussed on the OTR website: I am not a fan, a collector or a hobbyist.
I'm a performer, and have been, in Radio as well as other places, since the
age of twelve. I greatly enjoy directing and performing in the re-creations
at Newark. With most of the original performers in that Golden Age no
longer with us, we're constantly finding new talent for our re-creations, as
indeed we must.

Let me point not only to Will Hutchins, Craig Wichman and Kevin Scullin -
how about Simon Jones, Larry Conroy, Christina Britton Conroy and Jeff
David, and from the West Coast Dave Parker.

As FOTR directors and producers keep on finding more classic shows from that
Golden Age, we have to emphasize the shows themselves, until our public
realizes that the acting talent is still there, to give them their original
excitement.

But let's face it - we also need the name value of a few television
performers to bring people in. These people of course have talent too, and
we will cast them, as much as possible, in RADIO roles. As I was quoted as
saying in that Wall Street Journal article (Oct. 21): if it ever becomes
Friends of Old-Time Television, I'm out of there. But there is no reason we
can't have fun with the mixture we now have, as long as it is not tilted too
sharply to video.

With love to all,
Arthur Anderson

Dixon wonders why anyone would NOT clean a Tom Mix badge, citing an
example of a toy car being cleaned up to increase its value.

The difference is that one is a machine with moving parts, the other a
flat piece of metal. Any coin collector will tell you that shining up an
old coin totally destroys its value, and the same is probably true for
collectible badges. Whereas a machine with moving parts can be restored
and most (probably not all) collectors would pay a premium price, I'm
afraid a decoder wheel or badge or other item with non-moving parts would
lose value if subjected to a cleaning.

Silver and Gold bands indicate precision tolerance.

Hopefully, this ends it:

There are actually 4 color bands to a resistor as Bill H says. The 4th
band is a tolerance color band code located after the 3 resistance color
bands and is represented after "White" in the aid by "Get Some Now" as in:
Get = Gold =5%; "Some" = Silver =10%; "Now" = no color band = 20%
tolerances.

I think I read somewhere that since I learned this some 40 years ago, there
are additional colors for other tolerances, but I could be mistaken.

So we have: BBROYGBVGW GSN

rejecting the Digest because of the insessant use of the word used to

Dixon Hayes, commenting on my story of a person who was highly incensed
when I suggested that his highly corroded brass radio premium would be
improved significantly if it had been polished, notes,

I saw a recent "Antiques Roadshow" in which a man showed off a 1905 toy
limosine he had found in an attic. The expert said it was worth about
$500 in its current condition but restoring it would boost the value as
high as ten times the amount. <snip> I don't see why polishing a Tom
Mix badge (or whatever it was) would do anything other than increase the
worth, unless the seller is overly sentimental about the crud for
whatever weird reason.

Many brass premiums of the time were "flashed" with a molucules-thick
coating of gold, and naturally, polishing would remove that. But,
assuming that the corrosion started from a mint premium, it had so bad a
coating that any flashing was long gone, anyway.

My family, while I was growing up, was an Army family, and I learned
about effective metal polishes fairly early on, and kept my Code-O-Graphs
and other metallic premiums gleaming as long as I owned them (with one
exception: the Sky King Spy-Detecto Writer with the aluminum case; this
wouldn't take conventional polishes at the time). I do the same with my
current collection whenever corrosion develops.

However, I acquired a piece of aluminum-based cryptological equipment
(for the curious, an M-94/CSP 488 cipher device). It had led an exciting
existence, and showed it. When I mentioned that I was thinking of
polishing it to a cryptological equipment collector, he reacted, though
not as vehemently, as did the guy with the extremely corroded brass
premium.

recently.
I must say that I really enjoyed it! Tallulah bankhead was great as the
hostess of the program.

There's a book in stores now titled, "Dean and Me" by Jerry Lewis.
It chronicles their time together from their days performing in various
clubs,
their radio show ("Martin and Lewis") and even "My Friend Irma", movies,
and television. It is frank and sincere in its tone and there's no acrimony
at all while Jerry tells what happened along the way to their successful
careers, both together and apart.

Hi Everyone,

I am a long time member of this list from the early mid 1990's, but I mostly
lurk, soaking up all the fantastic bits of info that one finds on this list
daily. But I do have two questions I hope someone on the list can answer for
me off list.

I was wondering if Mandell Kramer is still living, and if so where he might
be contacted. I know he continued doing radio well past the prime of OTR
doing radio in the New York area and even showed up on Hi Brown's later
programs, but haven't heard anything about him for the last several years.

I was told that he never did OTR conventions and was wondering if that was
because he was never invited or because he didn't want to be involved with
conventions extolling his past.

I'm also interested in Bob Readick. If he is still alive, where might he be
contacted.

Thanks for any help you can give me. I apologize beforehand if this has been
answered earlier on the list.

Subject: when will we be on TV?

Though just thinking about the advent of television causes pain to many of
us (Kathy O'Connell once said that her KidsAmerica show was 'far too
advanced' for TV) it seems to me that TV was anticipated for much, if not
all, of the Golden Age of Radio.

I was surprised to hear it mentioned on several shows, but I don't recall
which ones. Does anyone know when TV, or the possibility of TV, mentioned
on radio shows?

Ms O'Connell once said that her favorite age of radio was the Bronze (if I
haven't messed up the quote.)
