Subject: The Other Gordon Gould
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Earlier this week, a famed physicist named Gordon Gould, credited with the
coinage of the word "laser," died here in NYC at the age of 85. While this
news is unfortunate, I am happy to report that the Gordon Gould whom we in OTR
are familiar with, the one who narrates Talking Books here at American
Foundation for the Blind and who was a regualar player in "The CBS Radio
Mystery Theatre" stock company, is very much alive. I saw the obit for the
laser inventor Gordon Gould and breathed a sigh of relief thinking "it better
not be our Gordon Gould--I have a studio session with him tomorrow."
Our Gordon Gould attended FOTR in 1999 and was one of several actors involved
in a big panel I hosted celebrating "CBSRMT." At the conclusion of the panel,
I was charged with presenting awards to FOTR first-timers Russell Horton,
Catherine Byers (also of Talking Books), and Gordon. When I did so, I observed
that Gordon deserved an award for putting up with all of my awful puns --
things on the order of "when you cross the Berlin Wall, you have to
Adenauer."
On Mr. Gould's first day back from a two-month vacation, he and I started
recording a biography of Beethoven. The narrative made reference to
Beethoven's fellow composer and friend Anton Schindler also wrote a biography
about ol' Ludwig. This led me to comment "I've never read Schindler's
'Beethoven,' but I have read 'Schindler's Liszt!'"
Ah, it's good to know that all-'round nice guy Gordon Gould is still alive
sharing his vocal talents with the world, and in spite of all of our recent
environmental problems, that the world is still a safe place for awful puns.
As Jean Shepherd used to conclude his New Jersey Public-TV show, "Think clean
thoughts."

Is there truly a wrong way to collect/? It does seem each of us have grown a
way which suits them whether it suits others or not.
This is starting to read like the doctor suess book where two countries went
to war becvause of which side their bread was buttered on.

Barbara (Brenda Johnson) asks,
I was interesting in giving my father a collection of radio shows.
He's always loved detective dramas from all different series. Are there
any specific favorites seasoned listeners could recommend?
Well, The Adventures of Sam Spade immediately springs to mind. Colorful,
often lighthearted, and with varied stories, it's a lot of fun. On a
more pulp fictional level, Pat Novak for Hire. Forget the plots; listen
to the purple prose. Finally, my real guilty pleasure: Mr. Keen, Tracer
of Lost Persons. The dialogue in that one is unconsciously campish
("Don't shoot me with that gun you're holding in your hand," would be a
good example, though this quote is really from a Bob and Ray lampoon).

I do not have a legal mind. I have never studied copyright law and do not
understand how some people came to acquire programs that they themselves had
no role in writing, producing, or performing. If they paid to acquire a
show, who sold it to them? Was it theirs to sell? If the "owner" keeps it
and does not allow other people to enjoy it, what else is it but hoarding?
Shall we create another word in order not to call it hoarding?
It is a shame that many participants in the Golden Age of Radio never
personally profited financially because the shows were done before the
unions could put residual rules in place. Many OTR performers died in
poverty. They are the true owners of the programs, not some hoarding
collector of today.

Subject: Wrong Titles on shows
Ted Davenport wrote:
The old adage "you get what you pay for" applies here.
I do buy OTR on MP3 disks (and a few on cassettes) but I limit my purchases to
certain dealers, because I have found a wide variety of "product". My problem
with MP3 dealers in general is a problem we used to have with tape dealers back
in the olden days. Many shows will be listed on MP3 disks under different
titles. I have received disks from some dealers with the same group of shows on
a disk as many as three times, just under different titles or dates. Sometimes
you can look at the file size and see it is the same file just renamed. This
only makes the dealers catalog look like they have more of a given series.
Obviously, they did not check the disk when they mastered it. It's just more
product.
Sometimes I wish someone would set up a fan site, where fans can trade good
disks among themselves.

Subject: On Mp3 vs. Non-Compression
Much is being written- often passionately- about the use of compression when
transferring OTR onto CD.
Like several other subscribers, I started my collection as a kid, in 1969. I
build it by swapping programs with other collectors, from across the
country. In fact, at least one of them is a member of this group. I sought
out quality, not quantity and in the end had about 250 1/4 track reels of
pretty good material.
Flash forward to 2005. My reel equipment is ancient and the first signs of
degradation are hitting my tapes. So I decide to transfer to CD. I quickly
discover that I can't put much material on a CD without compression.
For the audiophiles: I'm using an after-market sound card that is a great
improvement from what came with the computer, and a fine piece of software
called Magix Audio Cleaning Lab for the conversion. The sample rate is
[removed] and the Mp3 format is 128kBits/s.
After reading negative comments about compression, I tried a transfer
without compression. Not only did it fill up most of a CD, I can't tell the
difference between it and the same program converted to MP3 with the above
parameters.
Are my ears missing something? Some view compression with the same vehemence
as the old (bad) practices of double-speed copying or using 1-7/8 ips to fit
more on a tape.
Comments from the experts are welcome.

Subject: RE: in defense of Ron Lackman
I admire Derek Tague for coming to the defense of
his friend, Ron Lackman, that what a good friend does.
However as regards Mr. Lackman's latest book " Comic
Strips & Comic Books of Radio's Golden Age," there are
not simply a few errors in the book, it is loaded with
them. Some of them involve OTR but most of the ones I
found concern his references to the films & TV
versions of the comics as well as some of the
histories about the personalites who appeared in those
incarnations.
This kind of sloppy research makes me wonder just
how accurate is his information about the various
artists he talks about in the book. Since I know
nothing about the history of comic strips and since
there are so many errors about other areas, I am
forced to go through the thing with a jundiced view.
I have no personal bone to pick with Mr. Lackman,
I've never met the man, but if he's going to ask
people to shelve out money for his work he owes it to
them to make certain what he selling his accurate and
if he needs to send out copies of his manuscript to
friends for proof reading them please do it.
