Subject: Paging Mr. [removed]
In the current flap about "Foley" sound effects, Bobb Lynes, myself and the
other traditionalists seem to be regarded as doddering dinosaurs on the
endangered species list. Well, at least by the thoroughly modern,
forward-thinking visionaries who ascribe to the "same work, same name" theme
My grand-daughter actually falls in the latter group. She refers to all
rodeo cowboys on bucking bronchos as well as polo team riders as
"jockeys." (After all, aren't they all men on horseback in a competitive
event?) I probably have no more chance of converting little Chelsea to
changing her mind about her terminology than I do the Foley-Adherents.
But next time you guys are writing (or adapting) a radio play, instead of
using "SX" as the traditional abbreviation in it to designate sound effects
in your script, try substituting "FO" and see what the response will be.
(At least my grand-daughter will understand you.)

Oops, Jim Nixon gave a very good explanation of white feller.
I stand corrected.

Subject: Re: Personal Attacks
I suppose this would be seriously OT if I didn't have a vague memory of a
radio show back in the forties. Apparently George Washington was extremely
unpopular by the end of his second term, and that is probably what is being
referred to by Franklin's grandson (incidentally, Franklin's and his son
became estranged with the passing of Franklin's wife, and I believe the two
never communicated with each other again. Furthermore, I think the son became
a loyalist (Tory) and moved to England. The grandson might have been raised
anti-American). The OTR connection is a vaguely remembered segment of "Mr.
President," where Edward Arnold plays Washington and attempts to explain his
unpopularity. Hopefully one of the collectors on the list has a copy of the
program and can amplify this.
Thanx,
B. Ray

Subject: Abbott and Costello routine
Hi all,
Well first let me wish all the folks going to the FOTR convention a safe
trip. Some year I'm going to make it. It's a long walk from MN.
About the A&C Mudder Fodder bit, it's on an Edgar Bergen show as
well. Judy Garland was also on the show and it was a Father's Day
episode. I don't have a
date, though.
Hope I'm not repeating what has already come through this fabulous network
of incredible people.

I just noticed that the name of George Cates was listed in the births/
deaths list on the mailing list. Didn't he conduct the Lawrence Welk
orchestra for a while? I remember seeing him doing so on several of the
performances and specials that were broadcast on local PBS television.
I hope that this is the same person.
BTW, was there an equivalent of PBS on radio or did all of the
stations
have commercial support? There were so many sponsors on OTR. What
company/product sponsored the most OTR programs?
Another OTR Fan,
Kenneth Clarke
