A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: War of the worlds: novel vs radio
I am looking for a radio version of "War of the Worlds" that is faithful to
the H. G. Wells novel.
My collection includes the 1967 BBC version, 3 hours. But even that one
introduces telephones and helicopters, surely not around in 1898. Does
anyone know of a version that is really faithful to the novel?

Subject: What a Body by Allan Green (1949)
I recently read What a Body by Allan Green (1949) - "An Inner Sanctum
Mystery". It had a few OTR references along with other period news and mass
media comments so thought I would share. The story is a satirical look at the
events surrounding the murder of a health and fitness guru.
One scene has a bit of dialog between three characters:
"Did you hear him say anything else?"
"Yes, he did say something else. Only I can't remember it now - and I thought
it was funny last night. He sounded like that Senator."
John leaned forward. "You mean Senator Drumbow? The one who's staying here?"
No, that Senator on the radio. You know, that one on Sunday nights, Sandra."
Sandra explained to John,. "Mother means the one on Fred Allen's program.
Senator Claghorne. You know."
A few pages imagine the network coverage accorded to the crime and mentions
the Associated Press, the United Press, the International News Service, NBC,
and CBS. One scene suggests the possibility of having Tex McCrary and Jinx
Falkenberg interviewing the family of the deceased. Another sentence mentions
Norman Corwin but uses only his last name. The author assuming readers of the
time would be familiar enough with Norman Corwin to dispense with his first
name.
Movietone News is [removed] "[they] instantly alerted the camera crew
which it kept permanently on Florida's East Coast for the purpose of
photographing bathing-suited high school girls throwing grapefruit at each
other."
Time magazine is poked at when the author says they got a real break because
the murder neatly coincided with the day "...Luceman usually start
Timeediting". And Life magazine gets to present it's version of events as
"Life Goes to a Murder".
The book was enjoyable but the author was relentless in his mockery which
could get a little tiring. There were times I longed to encounter several
sentences in a row that were not laced with sarcasm. But I did appreciate the
glimpse into the past however made up it was.

Subject: Green Hornet
RyanO commented:
I recently discovered that Radio Spirits has published a brand new
collection of previously unreleased GH episodes with Al Hodge in the title
role. I eagerly snatched them up, hoping that the quality is better than one
might find on the internet with downloads encoded at too low a bitrate.
Ryan,
Radio Spirits is going direct to the original masters so they are the best
sound
quality they can be. Spirits is also releasing episodes that are NOT available
on the internet. They are releasing "lost" episodes. So there is no comparison
between what they are releasing versus what you can find on the web, which in
general are the usual episodes that's been circulating for decades.
And Radio Spirits will continue releasing "lost" episodes you cannot get
anywhere
else as long as sales of the box sets make it financially worthwhile. Not only
are the box sets released commercially, but downloading the shows (which are
copyrighted and the copyrights were renewed and still enforced) is not only
illegal (they are not in the public domain), but it's not supporting the
company
that is putting "lost" shows out on CD. If the shows were in the public domain,
that would be different, but they are still copyrighted (registered through the
[removed] Copyright and the registrations are featured in my GREEN HORNET book) so
it's always best to financially support the release of "lost" shows.
RyanO also commented: I am wondering why so few of the Green Hornet episodes
are available in
relation to the other signature WXYZ series; The Lone Ranger and Challenge
of the Yukon. While many of the Robert Hall era broadcasts are in
circulation, fewer programs from the Al Hodge and Jack McCarthy phases of
the series seem to be in existence. Why is this? I am eager to hear more of
the McCarthy episodes in particular as it seems that more people somehow
came to know the identity of the Hornet during this time.
There are many reasons that answer that question. There were only 1,000 GREEN
HORNET
shows broadcast, but 3,000 LONE RANGER. Most of the GREEN HORNET shows that's
been
in circulation originate from Charles Michelson's syndications from the
1960s, 70s
and 80s. Two and a half years worth of Al Hodge shows were never recorded at
all,
hence why there are not many in circulation. McCarthy only did a relatively
short
period of time compared to Hodge, which is why there are not as many
McCarthys. If
you have a preference for "lost" Green Hornet shows, write to Radio Spirits.
They are
the folks who are responsible for choosing what shows come out in future box
sets.
Martin
Any info is much appreciated.

Subject: Band of America
One of the OTR traders on this digest has sent me 6 CDs of the
"Cities Service Band of America" broadcasts from 1953 and 1954.
They have the commercials. All except one are directed by Paul Lavalle; one
is directed by Henry Fillmore. They were recorded off the air from WRCA-FM,
New York. All but a few are excellent quality. I am happy to trade these
for more Band of America, or other radio music programs. They are not yet
cataloged, but if there is interest, I will do that listing the first march
on each one. I do not have exact dates. Each one has 2 programs on it.
There is a 7th disc of march music; band is unidentified. Sound quality is
excellent, except for a few shows with fading, etc.
There never was a show like this one! Too bad it is gone.
