Now that Randy Riddle has posted a missing show (yet again!) I have updated

Subject: The Home Front

Someone loaned me a set of four audio cassetes in a package entitled The
Home Front. It appears to be a recording of some kind of radio show
possibly broadcast around 1985, the copyright date on the cassettes. It
features the voices of William B. Williams, Frank Goren and Edward Brown.

Does anyone have more information on this? Was a radio documentary? What
station was it on? Or was it a syndicated show for sale to any station?

I recently read Net of Cobwebs by Elisabeth Sanxay Holding originally
published in 1943. I thought I would share this brief section with readers of
this list.

"This is a shocking affair!" said the doctor sternly.
"Yes it is," said Malcolm. "It is."
"And reprehensible," said the doctor.
Reprehensible. Repersensible, Malcolm said to himself. Sounds like an Amos
'n' Andy word.

Subject: Some Great Actress!

Hello Everyone,

When I was a youngster back in the 1940s, my brother and I
used to listen to radio stories on the sneak after our
bedtime. I guess I never outgrew the habit since I still fall
asleep to otr stories. However, my wife does not appreciate
this practice and I use headphones. The other night I was
listening to an internet streaming broadcast so I do not know
exactly which show it was but it was a crime drama since I was
listening to Audio Noir. Well, in the middle of the night I
awoke and heard this woman crying and sobbing in such a heart
wrenching way that I was convinced that someone had died, in
real life that is. I looked to my wife who was fast asleep
and then realized that I still had my earphones on and thought
to myself, Wow, that woman in the story is some great actress.

Subject: Re: More on Pinkerton

Jack French mentions that further research indicates that Miss Pinkerton,
Inc may have never been broadcast as a series and that NBC just produced
the audition.

That would be one of radio's great losses if it wasn't. The audition show
I have in my collection is really delightful and fun.

I'm wondering about something, however. The audition show I have, pressed
on a Radio Recorders vinyl disc, runs almost thirty minutes and outlines
the story of the main character inheriting the detective agency and
becoming involved in a jewel robbery scheme.

However, Goldin lists this show in his database:

Miss Pinkerton. August 6, 1942. A closed circuit presentation for sponsor
approval. Nurse Ellen Richards is caring for the injured D. A., whom
gangsters are trying to bump off. Tony Marvin (announcer). 20 minutes.
Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

Well, this would make two different versions of the radio show. In the
Joan Blondell audition that I have, she's training to be a lawyer when she
inherits the detective agency.

So, when Blondell and Powell's audition didn't get picked up, did NBC or
someone else try again the following year, revamping the concept yet
again?

I did a search of the online newspaper radio logs and found one reference
from the New York Times to "Miss Pinkerton", a broadcast noted as
"Hollywood Radio Theater - Miss Pinkerton Inc." broadcast on WJZ on
December 27, 1943 from 10:30 to 11:00 with Barbara Hale. I'm assuming
that must be an adaptation of the movie.

Subject: Suspense upgrades needed

I've been working on getting a Suspense set that is complete with all
circulating shows, and best sound available. There are a few shows that pose
some serious challenges, and good copies may never have been available. If
anyone has replacements, please contact me.

These shows are real problems sound-wise and perhaps someone may have better
versions:
7/18/56 Man Who Threw Acid (muffle/overmodulated)
1/13/57 Russian New Year (muffle/overmodulated)
12/1/57 Jet Stream (muffle/overmodulated, other places hiss and sound
processing remnants)

These shows are less of a problem, but could use some refreshing
2/9/50 The Butcher's Wife - Kirk Douglas HOLLOW SOUND - NOISY
4/12/51 Early To Death - Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz MUFFLED OVERMODULATED
3/22/55 The Cellar - EricSnowden (AFRS) TINNY, NOISY NEEDS UPGRADE

These two seem to be bad recordings (they might be home recordings), and new
versions may never surface
5/9/46 Clock and The Rope- Jackie Cooper (AFRS)
4/28/52 The Shooting Of Billy The Kid - Frank Lovejoy

I recently uncovered a copy of the Memory Book by Fanny Barbour.

Looks like it was a give away, the mailing envelope from Standard Brands

My question is, who are these people in the photographs? Are they the

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Michael Leannah asks several questions about One Man's Family. Since it was
continuously on the air for a very long time, the book and chapter
designations really help keep things straight. For a large part of the run of the
show it was 30 minutes weekly. Most books were about 13 chapters in length, so
there were approximately four books a year. In 1950 when the show become 15
minutes five times a week there were many more chapters but still
approximately 4 books a year. Also the vast majority of chapters had names that helped
provide a suggestion of the story line. The language was, indeed, rather
formal, but not overly so for a very upper middle class family of time. The
language was certainly not "middle American", but many of us knew families who
spoke similarly. As for the theme music, Destiny Waltz was used from 4/29/1932
to 10/13/40, Patricia, or Waltz Patricia as it was sometime called, was
named for Carlton E. Morse's first wife and was used from 10/20/1940 through the
end of the show 4/24/1959. It was also intended to be used for the two weeks
of additional shows that were never broadcast. Journey into Melody was
never used with One Man's Family on radio.

Thanks Jack, and others, for clearing up the question I had regarding
"Miss Pinkerton, Inc.". I was wondering why I couldn't find copies of this
program available.

I've looked through my copy of John Dunning's book ("The Encyclopedia
of Old Time Radio") and can't seem to find any information on a program
called "Weird Circle". Many of the radio program collectors (like myself)
can't
remember it either. Surely, it wasn't on the air for long or was a
replacement for
a more recognized show. Does anyone know anything about it?

Subject: OMF Info

Mike,

The One Man's Family broadcast format consisted of thirty-minute programs,
broadcast once a week, through Sunday, June 4, 1950. Then the programs were
fifteen minutes in length, five days a week, from June 5, 1950, through May
8, 1959, the last broadcast. In the book-chapter identification, the last
broadcast was Chapter 20 of Book 134.
There were 3256 episodes in all, not counting repeats for different time zones.

Carlton Morse used the Book, Chapter method to identify each show as he wrote
its script. In his home I remember seeing a floor to ceiling bookcase
wherein he had all of his Family scripts bound into the Books so designated
containing the many Chapters numerated I assume each Book containing at least
20 titled Chapters.

Father Barbour's given name was Henry, and that's what his wife, Fanny,
(Mother Barbour)called him. For the most part the immediate children called
him "Dad" when referring to him with each other. Clifford in conversation
with his older brother Paul called him such, as did the daughters. But the
Grandkids and other members of the family just referred to him as Father
Barbour or "Grandfather" when greeting him in person.
But it was "Father Barbour" for the most part when talking about him in
general with him not present. Of course non-relatives called him Mr.
Barbour.

Carlton Morse was inclined to the formal and wouldn't have had his Betty
character in general address the collective family group, as say "Hey, guys,
wait till you hear what happened!" He often used the generic term of
address, 'family' when that's what
he meant. It was his style. Listeners who continued to tune in apparently
did accept this type of dialog, and probably were influenced by it.

As for your "Journey into Melody" audio cut I believe I may have the same
record. And when I heard it described as representing the OMF theme I was
puzzled as well.
