Subject: Where is Fu Manchu?

I've been following the discussion on the whereabouts of the additional 40
Fu Manchu eps on MP3.

While surfing the web I've noticed the shows at the Radio Memories and
Serial Squadron web sites. Also I've noticed a few-Fu Manchu shows being
offered at the First Generation Radio Archives. Usual disclaimer applies,I
am not affiliated with the above entities in anyway. Just thought this
little tid-bit would be of interest to Fu Manchu fans, Enjoy

Subject: Oh, for those otr days of baseball!

In the late forties and the fifties is where my pleasant thoughts go. I was
and am a big yankee fan and used to get them via teletype from norfolk, va.(
i live near richmond). The signal was so weak that my brother and i had to
take turns holding and squeezing the antenae wire to boost the sound as we
kept our ears against the speaker of the old philco console. A couple of our
friends were dodger fans and got them the same way from newport news. A
couple more liked the giants and i remember we could get them live, how, i
dont know, but i remember hearing russ hodges and earnie harwell do their
games. Anyway we got the yankees on teletype by mark scott who later advanced
to the majors and did homerun derby on tv and did live radio broadcasts.
Virtually every game was in the daytime and no game was on artificial turf.
There was also the mutual game of the day with al helfer, art gleason, and
later dizzy dean. I listened to them a lot because the yankees were then like
now, the most popular team and were the "game of the day" almost half the
time. Oh what it must hve been like living in new york when those three teams
were there. The rivalry was intense even down in va. where i lived. The three
new york teams plus the red sox dominated baseball discussions in my
hometown. It was then as it is now, you either hated the yankees or you loved
them, but what innocent fun we had following baseball on radio. We seldom
heard interviews and had no idea what most of the players even looked like.
It was sort of the way we looked at our school teachers, teachers had no
other life or concerns but to teach school, at 3 oclock they dissappeared
until then next morning and who knows what happened to them when the weekends
came. Ballplayers were the same, baseball was the only thing they did and
they didnt exist between games. Tv for good or bad changed all of this, but
im sure glad i was a product of the radio days before experiencing tv. The
kids of today missed out on something that will never be again.

It may have been done under a different title.

I am trying to locate a copy of the February 5th 1941 broadcast over CBS from
New York by Glenn Miller. In announcing the tune "Sentimental Me" Glenn said
that it was "for the soldiers at Fort Knox, Kentucky".
I am researching the Ft Knox area. We have a Glenn Miller performing Arts
Center at Ft Knox, but I cannot tell if Glenn Miller ever played at the Army
base. Count basie, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstroing and many others did.
Any one having a copy please contact me off line.

Thanks,

   In #288 Amanda posted:

There is no greater optimism killer than to have
been 'born' a fan of the Red Sox".

Except, I think, to have been 'born' a fan of the Chicago Cubs!

And another optimism killer is trying to find a recording of even a
measly half-inning of a play-by-play radio broadcast by the Cubs' legendary
Bert Wilson (on WIND, about 1944-55).

XM Satellite Radio contacted me some months ago when they were looking to
start their OTR programming. They needed help on securing the broadcast
rights for shows, and I helped them with both the Benny program and Burns and
Allen. So it seems that originally they did not intend dependence upon
MediaBay. However, exclusive is exclusive.

A member recently contacted me (interestingly enough, a deaf Jack Benny fan)
and mentioned that her kids had recently gotten a calico kitten, which ended
up being named JB. She also bought four fire-bellied toads, which were named
Jack, Dennis, Don, and Rochester. She was contemplating getting some more
reptiles and rodents to fill out the Jack Benny cast. I mentioned that I
liked the idea of two iguanas named Mabel and Gertrude, or a snake named
Sheldon Leonard. I guess Mel would have to be a parrot or a polar bear. And
what would Mary be? [removed]

I thought it would interesting to discuss funny or (in)famous of goofs and
faux pas on old time radio programs. I got the idea because I listened to two
programs this week that had very noticeable goofs.

One was the 4-8-38 broadcast of Lux Radio Theater. The show was Dark
[removed] at the very end I had to do a "double take". The show was on
CBS for its entire run. But announcer Melville Ruick starts to say at the
very end, "This is the National [removed], CBS, the Columbia
Broadcasting System. Heck, they used enough sound effects on the

wrong, but I don't think Ruick EVER announced for ANY program on NBC. Wonder
what he was thinking!

The other (much more sympathetic) goof came on the 5-3-49 episode of Fibber
McGee and Molly. Harlow Wilcox starts coughing uncontrollably during the
opening commercial for Johnson's Wax! He asks for a glass of water, but can't
finish the announcement, and Billy Mills has to bail him out!

My father was a die hard Red Sox Fan. Even when the game was on TV he would
turn down the sound and listen to the radio announcers. I remember as a
child listening to Jim Britt and later Curt Gowdy. Britt had a friendly
rivalry with Mel Allen, the Yankee announcer and they would argue over who
was the better ball player, Ted Williams or Joe DiMaggio. All but Curt is
gone now.

A comment about a Brooklyn Dodger fan walking down the street and not
missing an inning. I had the same experience. I delivered the evening paper
in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1949-52, while in school. We collected for
the paper every Saturday afternoon. I could listen to every inning of the
Red Sox game as I went from house to house collecting for the paper in the
summer. In the fall it was the Notre Dame football game that dominated the
airways on Saturday.
Ted Williams spent three years in World War II as a Marine pilot and he was
called back for two years during the Korean War flying with John Glenn.
Just think of the records he would have set if he hadn't given up five years
of his prime baseball years.

I finally realized a boyhood dream the other day that I had harbored
for 52 years, ever since the good folk of Hot Springs, New Mexico voted
to change the name of their little burg to Truth or Consequences,
effective March 31, 1950.

Just why did they change the city's name. and why did they name it after Truth or
Consequences?

All that said, I'm frankly not a big fan of A&A-TV -- it and the later
half-hour radio shows seem to me to be an unfortunate cheapening of
the deep characterizations Correll and Gosden had established in the
1930s serial,

I used to watch the A&A TV show in the 1950s, and, even as a child, I grew tired of the
constant repetition of the basic plot of Kingfish hoodwinking Andy. I also thought the show
should be called "Kingfish & Andy," since Amos almost never appeared.

This, incedentally, had something to do with the reason for Black protests, since Kingfish
was a con artist and Andy was an idiot, while Amos, the respectable, hard-working family
man, was never seen.
