So, everyone, how can we arrange to obtain a recording of "Who's on first",
"Mudder", "Loafer" and any other similar routines? I for one, 'though not as
big an Abbott and Costello fan as I am for Laurel and Hardy (but that would
be difficult), would dearly love to obtain such! Help!

"The Little King" and "Smokey Stover" when I was mentioning Notary Sojack.
Hardly anyone remembers either comic strip anymore,
Judging by the number of replies, it seems that at least a few of us on this
list remember good ol' Smokey.

Subject: Smokey Stover and Columbia Square
hello all --
The recent discussion of "Smokey Stover" reminds me of another
contemporary by the same name. If you've ever seen the 1944 documentary
"The Fighting Lady," filmed in large part aboard the carrier USS
Yorktown, one of the folks the film follows is a SBD Dauntless
dive-bomber pilot named Elisha T. Stover, nicknamed "Smokey." He was
shot down over Truk and executed by the Japanese in 1944. Aboard the
Yorktown (now a museum near Charleston, SC), the movie theatre built
into the forward elevator well is known as the Smokey Stover Memorial
Theatre. "The Fighting Lady" is a regular feature there.
And Conrad Binyon wrote, regarding Columbia Square:
Boulevard, Hollywood, California by CBS I wondered if the company's
historical staff ever compiled a picture record kept of all the
displays and events that took place in the open space that existed
between the two west and east oriented building wings of he 'Square.'
Somewhere around here I have some tiny snapshots I found years ago in an
antique store, in a box of postcards. One is of NBC's old Hollywood
facility and the other was that courtyard at Columbia Square. You can
clearly see the sign denoting one section as the "KNX Victory Garden."
Later in life I was to become acquainted with the two test pilots,
Tony LeVier and Herman 'Fish' Salmon that helped develop the ship.
And, as Lee Munsick can tell you, Tony LeVier has a special guest
appearance in the classic film "Flying With Godfrey" film, where Mr.
Godfrey shared the screen with a beautiful Eastern Air Lines Super
Constellation. (In a sad piece of symmetry, "Fish" Salmon was killed
many years later in the crash of a Super Constellation.)
Sorry for the airplane geekiness, but that's the other hat I wear! :)

Subject: Edgar Guest House
Fibber and Molly may have had an Edgar Guest Bedroom ... and isn't that just
the kind of delicious word play that Don Quinn put into those F and M
scripts. But WJR, the great voice of the great lakes from the golden tower
of the Fisher building in Detroit had a whole "Guest House." That was the
name of a live music show that lasted well after most stations had become
news and talk. I went downtown to watch the show a time or two. The emcee
was Bud Guest, Edgar Junior. He followed in the old man's footsteps as a
newspaper man and radio talker. Before "Guest House" became his show he was
featured on his "Sunny side of the street" upbeat commentary show. I have
the WJR 50th anniversary Lp and souvenir book that I might part with if
somebody made me an offer too good to turn down. To put it politely, Edgar's
poetry was not highly regard in serious literarly circles but he was beloved
in Michigan. When I was in elementsary school in what was then the very
rural village of Warren, Michigan, Edgar came to my school and read his
poems. A memorable day for a Michigan kid. Warren now has trhe Edgar Guest
branch library. So thank goodness old Eddie is still well remembered by one
or two of us old coots.

Subject: KNX goodbye/lung cancer
I appreciated Herb Harrison's report on the KNX farewell to Columbia Square
broadcast. It was midnight here when the program came on and way past my
bedtime, even for a weekend. It surprised me (sort of) that they spent any
time on that psychic nonsense and the "ghosts" of OTR stars roaming the
halls. But then, that report from the company's Ch. 9 made much of silliness
when the considerable time they spent on the story could have been better
devoted to much more substance (at least, more substance for folk such as
ourselves). Well, after all, it is (was) Hollywood.
I've been away and while I haven't heard/seen/read all the things said about
Peter Jennings in the general media or in this digest, I was disappointed in
the reports about other well-knowns who have died of lung cancer ... they
mentioned Yul Brynner, Nat "King" Cole, Desi Arnaz and some others ... but
they missed the "news" connection, Edward R. Murrow and Chet Huntley, among
them.

Subject: THE NOOSE HANGS HIGH
Score credited to Walter Schuman, who claims to have written the famous 4
notes of the Dragnet theme. These 4 notes were heard in Noose, but the
real credit for that infamous bar of music belongs to the finest ever
movie mood maker, Miklos Rozsa.

Subject: OTR School Theme List!
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I am trying to create a OTR list of shows that have a school related episode
or theme. I didn't come across much on the Internet, but I was wondering if
any of the readers have a listing of shows with a school related themes they
would like to share that I could add to my list. I love to create theme
related
list of otr shows, it makes it very easy to find or play your OTR collection,
when an occasion such as back-to-school fever hits you, just before the Labor
Day Holiday. I generally search in my collection in August to find a show
that had a school theme for example: Lux Radio Theatre "Goodbye Mr. Chips
11/20/39, My Favorite Husband "Liz Goes to Night School" 11/18/50, Dragnet
"Big Knife" 5/11/50, Our Miss Brooks "School on Saturday" I listen to these
shows through the month of September to welcome that feel for back-to-school.
It
makes things fun by the month to theme. If any of the readers have composed
a list of there own favorite school related shows they would like to share or
suggest I add to my list feel free to suggest. It can be any school
situation, bad grades, suspension, detention, crime, college life, debate
teams,
teachers, school crushes. Any can help.
