Hello -- Aug. 1, 2004 CNN Headline News channel ran a bottom banner saying
this day was the anniversary of the first episode of The Shadow mystery radio
series in 1930. Nice to see a national TV network noting the first Shadow
show to be one of the significant dates in history. However, they spoiled it
by adding the part was played by Orson Welles who came along some years later.
I'm not even sure they have the date absolutely correct. Once again, I defer
to Anthony Tollin. -- Jim Harmon

Subject: Nation Lampoon Radio Hour
For 59 weeks, ending January, 1975, the National
Lampoon Radio Hour aired weekly and featured some
oldtime radio people, including Bob Dryden, Jackson
Beck and Leon Janney. Many of the skits used on the
Lampoon's albums were taken directly from the radio
show. This show also launched the careers of some
more-recent stars, such as Gilda Radner, Bill Murray,
Paul Schaefer, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Harold Ramis
to name but a few. The older guys like Dryden, Janney
and Beck always played the older announcer types,
playing it straight to the younger folks like the
latter people. If you can stand the topical
(sometimes outdated) references such as the Arab oil
embargo, Watergate, etc. I would think the entire
series on tape (reel?) would be a rewarding listen. I
listened to much of it at the time but I'm sure I
wasn't aware of the significance of hearing the people
featured on the series.

Doug, the story for the movie is from a short story by Phillip Dick written
back in the fifties. The story never appeared on any of the fifties SF
programs. It might have parallels to some other otr show you have heard of,
but it would probably only be that - a parallel plot.

Subject: The topic that wouldn't die
Bobb Lynnes writes:
My theory is as follows: perhaps a fan/writer back in the early days of the
OTR/ Nostalgia craze asked an actor or actress if they kept(collected) any
of their scripts from the shows and was told, "No we just threw them away
after we were done with them".
This brings two thoughts to [removed] opposite ends of the argument. I
remembered in interviewing Phil Harris, he commented that the cast usually
"threw their scripts on the piano." Thus indicating (with the possible
exception
of Mary, although many of her scripts are kept as duplicates in the UCLA
[removed] with THAT if you will) that people did keep their
scripts
in order.
However, I also remember hearing that Red Skelton supposedly stole some of
his classic routines by grabbing (or having his wife grab) pages from
discarded
Fred Allen script pages from the floor of the studio. Even the classic
Guzzler's Gin was supposed to have had this source. So perhaps Portland or
Kenny Delmar had fumbley fingers?

Subject: Another Jackson Beck non-radio bit
Hi folks, I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Jackson Beck
recently. What a voice he had! I got his autograph at a Friends Of Old
Time Radio convention a few years ago. I wanted to get an interview for my
show as well but he was very busy that weekend and we never got around to
it. My loss. What did I have him sign? The cover of my laserdisc of Woody
Allen's "Take The Money And Run". A hilarious film about a would-be bank
robber (Woody) who mis-spells hold-up notes. "Please put 50,000 dollars
into this bag and apt naturally ... I am holding a gub". Jackson Beck did
the narration to this film and did a great job. Something about his
authoritative voice delivering those silly lines. You gotta see it. In
addition to his name, he wrote "John, the above is good advice". Rest in
peace Jackson, you will be missed.

Subject: re: Can you name this show?
Thanks to the several people wrote back to me with ideas. Jim Widner came up
with the answer -- the movie Paycheck is based on a story by Philip K. Dick,
which it turns out I read in paperback and only imagined having heard it
dramatized. Interesting how reading a book can create an audio memory. I
guess it's the same as the way radio drama creates pictures in our minds. We
all have our own "memories" of how various radio characters and places look,
in spite of never actually having seen them. I myself have a vivid picture
of the Scarlet Queen, and would instantly recognize Phil Carney and Red
Gallagher on the streets of any tropical city.

Polyline is one of many places that offers blank recording media and their

I they have been the subject of previous postings, but I am curious to know
if there are any other sources. I am primarily interested in plastic cases

cases and I'm looking for certain sizes.

Subject: Basis for current movie "Paycheck"
I havn't seen the movie, but i'm fairly certain it is based on a story by
the author Philip K. Dick
(and that the film DOES acknowledge this).
I believe that he was mainly known for his SF stories, with many plots
involving "time" (like Paycheck)...and that he passed away about 20 years
[removed] that part of his writing career was during the 50's.
The movie Bladerunner was based on his book "Do Androids dream of electric
Sheep?" (great title huh!?) and Cali Gov's "Total Recall" from his "We can
remember it for you wholesale". The Tom Cruise/Spielberg SF-time
twist-detective thriller from about 2 years back was also based on one of
his stories.
Of course, some of the writer's of OTR Science Fiction (and/or the stories
themselves) may have influenced him
....tho i also believe that "time" was an early common feature of SF stories
that in turn, predated most SF-ish OTR.

Dear Mr. Hickerson:
I got your e-mail address from Marvin Bensman
I am associate producing a documentary on the life and career of Irving
Thalberg for Turner Classic Movies. The film will air in Feb. of 2005.
We are looking for radio announcements of Thalberg's death. On September 14,
15, or 16 1936. KFI-KECA had a 15-minute program narrated by John Hallern
commemorating Thalberg's life. Thalberg died on September 14 and the
funeral was held on the16th
1936. Also, KEHE-Hearst Radio was the first to broadcast his death and KNX
announced it as well.
Can you direct me towards anyone who might have any of these?
