Michael is correct in his quoting the law regarding advocating the overthrow
of the government but the fact still stands that being a member of the US
Communist party was not and is not illegal. Technically if a member of the
Republican or Democratic party preached the violent overthrown of the
government said member would be subject to the same law Michael mentioned and
hopefully would be prosecuted under that law. However, they can not be
arrested for being members of one of the dominant political parties.
Red Channels, the Blacklist, McCarthy and McCarthyism and their ilk
represent a dark time in our history that we probably had to to go through as
part of the growing pains this country has had to endure IE: The Civil War,
Jim Crow Laws etc. No one here is going to change any ones mind on how they
feel about it pro or con, the best we can hope for as a nation is that it
never happens again. That we have enough confidence in ourselves and our
system to believe that we and it can stand on equal footing with any opposing
views and go toe to toe without resorting to the shameful practices of an
earlier age.
And that we never again again have to endure such blatant propaganda as "I
Was a Communist for the F. B. I." a show that I enjoy for it's
predictability.

Subject: RE: Ozzie and Harriet
If my memory isn't playing tricks on me, David Nelson was once asked about
his father's profession, and he said that his dad was a band leader/singer,
with his mother being the band vocalist (if fact, this fact is borne out by
listening to "Red Skelton" shows from the early forties. For a time, Harriet
played the part of Junior's [the mean widdle kid] mother.) Their show was
slated to begin broadcasting on television, with Ozzie's band leader life
being a major part of the scripts; however, somehow or other the beginning of
telecasting the show was put of for a year, and during that time Lucy and
Desi began telecasting their show, with Desi's profession of band leader
being a prominent element. The producers and writers of O & H then decided
that Ozzie being a band leader would be to much of a "me too" concept. As a
result, by the time the show did reach television, all the band leading was
downplayed while the couple's home life was emphasized. The only thing wrong
with that story, though, is that I don't believe the radio shows said much
about Ozzie's profession either.
Thanx,

Subject: RE: Matt Cvetic
Two entries about Matt Cvetic summarize his real activities in just a couple
of paragraphs Googling his name will produce many more. The real Cvetic was a
paid informant for the FBI, and never an employed agent. From what I've read,
he also wasn't a very nice person. One of the aritcles below notes that he
once beat up his sister-in-law, and I'm pretty sure I remember another
article that argued that he was a wife-beater.
Personally, I always have a difficult time dealing with stories that purport
themselves to be factual, then turn out to be highly exaggerated or totally
fictional. I end up feeling that I've been conned into believing the story's
point of view. Also, note that the articles below cite at least one book
about Cvetic, but I've never read it, so I can't comment one way or the
other.
I want also to enter my two cents about blacklisting and who did or didn't
want to blow up our government. Many of those attacked by HUAC and other
congressional panels had begun their commie affiliation in the thirties,
during the depths of the depression. At that time, blacks, Jews, and other
minorities were assumed to be communists merely because of their ethnic
backgrounds. I can't come up with a citation just now, but I remember hearing
about Congressman accused Edward G. Robinson of being a communist because his
surname was originally "Goldenstein" and he was Jewish.
I also recall, during my undergraduate days, taking a course from St. Clair
Drake, who, with Horace Clayton, wrote a sociological/anthropological classic
study of Chicago's Negro community, "Black Metropolis," which eventually
became a classic in its field. Drake, who remembered the thirties quite well,
told us that when a family was evicted by the sheriff, and their belongings
were taken out to the sidewalk and left there, all the social agencies and
the politicians did their tsk-tsking and braying about how unfair it all was,
the reds would show up and move the furniture back up to the apartment. That
sort of practice made them rather unpopular with landlords, but extremely
popular with the tenants. Don't forget that about a quarter of the US
population had lost their jobs for the greater part of that decade. The reds
also preached racial and ethnic equality at a time when when most of those in
major political parties and unions advocated just the opposite. It isn't
surprising, then, that many of those who were dispossessed in America felt
that communism had a great deal to offer.
As the nation's financial trauma dissipated around the time we entered the
war, many, if not most of them, dropped out of the CP and moved more toward
the center or the right. What so infuriated many about the congressional
hearings after the war was, they went after everybody who had ever joined the
CP or who was once a 'fellow traveler.' They didn't confine themselves to
investigating only those remained communists after the war. They also cited
for Contempt of Congress anyone who would not publicly name their old friends
and business associates as fellow commies. We, as a society, have always been
rather schizophrenic about snitching on our friends. On the one hand, we
consider it morally repugnant while legally, we are required to do so. I
think a similar scizophrenia caused the division between Hollywood's lefties
and righties of the forties and fifties, and still exists today, forcing
Charlie to remind us to be civil when we discuss this topic.

Hello everyone, I want to get a portable player to play my mp3 radio shows. I know
nothing about them. Would a few people contact me either on the digest or by e-mail
and share with me what is good to buy and size of memory to get. I am looking for
something what would work with a dell computer? I would appreciate any help anyone
would send. Many thanks Lynn Wagar
