Subject: "The Golden Age of Radio" and "A One
Night Stand with the Big Bands"
The latest "Golden Age of Radio" programs with Dick Bertel
and Ed Corcoran, and "A One Night Stand with the Big Bands"
with Arnold Dean can be heard at [removed].
Each week we feature three complete shows in MP3 format
for your listening pleasure or for downloading; two "Golden
Age of Radios" and one "One Night Stand." We present new
shows every week or so. The current three programs will be
available on line at least until the morning of July 17, 2006.
Program 58 - January, 1975 - Robert Anderson
Robert Anderson, who has been described as the "dramatist
of loneliness," is one of America's major playwrights to chronicle
mid-century American life. Anderson was born
in New York City in 1917 and received undergraduate and
graduate degrees from Harvard University, where he began
writing for the stage. His plays have been produced
professionally and in community and college theatres all
over the world.
Anderson's most famous plays include Tea and Sympathy
(1953), You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running (1967) and I
Never Sang for My Father (1968).
Anderson has also written extensively for motion pictures,
radio, and television. His film credits include Tea and Sympathy (1956);
Until they Sail (1957), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best
Screenplay;
Sand Pebbles (1966); The Num's Story, which received
an Academy Award nomination; and I Never Sang for
My Father which received an Academy Award nomination and was the winner of
the Writers' Guild
of America Award (1970).
The author recalls his days immediately following World
War Two as a struggling young radio writer in New York.
Program 59 - February, 1975 - David Rounds
David Rounds, radio soap opera actor and co-author of the
1973 book, "The Soaps: Daytime Serials of Radio and TV."
Mr. Rounds was also a veteran broadway actor, appearing
with Nancy Marchand in "Morning's at Seven."
Soap operas, which received their names because soap manufacturers were the
first sponsors, began as 15-minute
radio shows that provided listeners with a means to escape
their everyday problems. During the 1930s and '40s, up to
80 soap operas a day were broadcast. These included Stella Dallas, The
Romance of Helen Trent, When A Girl
Marries, Mary Noble, Backstage Wife, Our Gal Sunday
and The Guiding Light. By their names alone, it is obvious
that women have been the target audience of soap operas
since their inception.
We'll hear the inside information on soaps on this program.
"A One Night Stand with the Big Bands" with Arnold Dean
The subject tonight is the fourth of Arnold's conversations
with George T. Simon, author of The Big Bands and Simon
Says: The Sights and Sounds of the Swing Era, and the foremost authority on
the Big Band Era.
He was born George Thomas Simon into a talented family.
His father was a milliner, but his brother, Richard Simon, was the
co-founder of the American publishing house Simon & Schuster, and the
singer-songwriter Carly Simon
is one of his nieces. He graduated with a BA from Harvard
University in 1934, and began working for the music
magazine Metronome the following year.
In the 1970's WTIC decided that there was a market in
the evening for long-form shows that could be packaged
and sold to sponsors. Two of those shows were "The
Golden Age of Radio" and "A One Night Stand with the
Big Bands."
Dick Bertel had interviewed radio collector-historian
Ed Corcoran several times on his radio and TV shows,
and thought a regular monthly show featuring interviews
with actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians
from radio's early days might be interesting. "The Golden
Age of Radio" was first broadcast in April, 1970; Ed was
Dick's co-host. It lasted seven years. "The Golden Age
of Radio" can also be heard Saturday nights on Walden
Hughes's program on Radio Yesteryear.
Arnold Dean began his love affair with the big band era in his pre-teen
years and his decision to study the clarinet was inspired by the style of
Artie Shaw.
When he joined WTIC in 1965 he hosted a daily program
of big band music. In 1971, encouraged by the success
of his daily program and "The Golden Age of Radio" series, he began monthly
shows featuring interviews
with the band leaders, sidemen, agents, jazz reporters,
etc. who made major contributions to one of the great
eras of music history.

Subject: Seeking a light western show
Our re-creation group has been asked to put on a show featuring a "light",
almost comedic western program. It's an adult audience, so we don't want a
kids show such as Hopalong or the Lone Ranger. On the other hand we don't
want an adult western such as Gunsmoke or Have Gun, Will Travel. If we can
find the right kind of show, we would transcribe the script.
Anyone have any ideas on that type of western show?
Ted
[removed] It could be a spoof western if some show did that.

I'd suggest Fort Laramie" since it had the same production crew, same
supporting cast, many of the same writers, in fact some of the scripts of
"Fort Laramie" were used on "Gunsmoke" and vice versa. Of course, there are
only 40 eps since it aired for for just one season.
After you finish with those forty, I'd point you in the direction of
"Voyage of the Scarlet Queen" unless you and the missus prefer hoofbeats in
your radio entertainment.

There is hardly a day that I don't listen to several OTR program, I marvel
at the actor & actress that have very good diction , They speak clearly
even when the good guys are sneaking up on the bad guys and have to keep
their voices so the bad guy won't hear them, we can hear and understand
what they say.
Even the singers sang song so we understood the word. Remember the
"Manhattan Merry-go-round" The announcer, Ford Bond would say "Whirl though
New York Night Clubs where the top tunes of the week were sung so clearly
you can under stand word and sing them Yourself"
Frank Sinatra , Bing Crosby, Al Jolson, Dinah Shore, Kate Smith to name a
few sung so you heard the words
Fast forward to the era of TV and the actors and actors don't speak clearly
and a lot singers sing like they
forgot the words or the so called music drowns them [removed]
Being a person of advanced years there are perks one that took advantage of
was a free hearing test and I have good hearing so I am sure the TV actors
and actresses are not nearly as good as the OTR [removed] it comes to
diction projecting their [removed] same with singers, but not all of then.
Maybe that why I love OTR

Subject: Lone Ranger scripts -- Help!!
I'm involved in a 2-week summer session class for a number of people of an
age to have remembered "The Lone Ranger" radio program, and the instructor
has asked me to look into obtaining a copy of any or all of the following
scripts. This would be for a class doing a production of one of the shows
as a presentation for the small college summer session community (300
people). It would be done like an on-air broadcast, but it wouldn't
actually go over the air.
I just got this word a few days ago, and I'd like to get the script(s) as
quickly as possible. Please respond off-list, and I'll call you to make
whatever arrangements are necessary.
The shows and original broadcast dates are as follows:
"Telescope Clue" (12/30/53)
"Fortune in a Hat" (3/8/54)
"Infernal Machine" (5/12/54)
"Bud Titus Resigns" (1/9/50).
Many thanks for whatever help anyone can provide.
