I m writing to inquire about the history of the radio
program "Diary of Fate. The program was syndicated by Larry Finley
syndication, would this program fall into the category
of what Jack French would call "a radio counterfeit of
the whistler". The stories were very similar. Did the
same writers do both programs? How popular was this
poor mans version of the Whistler?
Regarding "Diary of Fate" I'm afraid there is relatively little
information to go on regarding this syndicated series. Jerry Haendiges
has a partial log of it at his site, <[removed]> There
were 35 episodes that originally ran from 12-15-47 to 8-10-48, and
Jerry has the dates and titles for 24 of them.
Incidentally, 35 is an unusual number for a syndicated run; they
usually total 50 or 52 so the company could sell an entire year's worth
of weekly shows.
I can't find Larry Finley in any of my standard OT reference [removed]

You are correct. Larry Ferrari was on Philadelphia radio and television on
WFIL-TV, later changed to WPVI-TV. Here is his bio from the Broadcast
Pioneers site of Philadelphia, run by president Gerry Wilkinson, and hosted
by Anne Klein and Associates.

Subject: The Weakest Links
Note that a huge dispute has erupted on Wikipedia after one person
began deleting all of the "Listen to" links to various OTR sites:
[removed]:Old-time_radio
[removed]:Digital_Deli_Online
The main focus is aimed at commercial vs. non-commercial aspects, but
that is only one of many arguments being tossed about. Links to the
Haendiges logs have also been eliminated.

Arlene Francis was also a panelist on the radio, and television,
verisons of "What's My Line?" and on another radio program titled
"The Affairs of Ann Scotland". This is according to the information I found
in "Private Eyelashes: Radios Lady Detectives" by Jack French and John
Dunning's "On The Air: The Encyclopedia of Old Time Radio.
I'm sure there were others.

I am trying to hunt down the name of an actor for a customer. All I know
about the actor in question is that he played "Bat" Nelson on the Sgt.
Preston episode entitled "Jailbreak." Does anyone have any idea who this
might be?

I know that some of the Gunsmoke shows were redone as TV shows when Gunsmoke
was still a half-hour show and that Have Gun, Will Travel worked in reverse
(TV to Radio).
But, were any of the Dragnet or Lone Ranger radio shows redone as TV
episodes?

Subject: New Resource for Locating OTR Scripts
With very little help from me, my wife, who has become almost as
enthusiastic about OTR as I am, has co-authored a brand new radio reference
book.
Written for collectors, re-creation groups and researchers, RADIO SCRIPTS
IN PRINT is designed to be an additional and inexpensive resource for
locating scripts when none of the "usual" sources, [removed], the Internet,
eBay, OTR club archives and library Special Collections bear fruit or are
feasible or practical.
The book identifies a total of 174 books that can either be purchased or
borrowed from a library using the inter-library loan process and which,
when taken together, contain more than 1,700 scripts for programs. The
scripts cover series as well as one time only specials, ranging from comedy
and drama to mystery, suspense, documentaries, science fiction, news,
religion, soaps, etc.
Included among the 1,700+ scripts are
-- Popular series such as Cavalcade of America, Columbia Workshop and
Theatre Guild
-- One time only specials such as Stephen Vincent Benet's They Burned
The Books
-- Scripts for series for which only a very few programs are available in
audio such as Flywheel, Shyster, and Shyster
-- Scripts of lesser known programs that may be of historic interest to
collectors and radio historians but which are not known to be
available in either audio or print format such as scripts for Ultra
Violet a science fiction program written by Fran Striker that
predates his Lone Ranger
-- Scripts of interest to teachers (elementary through high school) who
may want to use radio plays to stimulate interest in
classic literature, American history and the lives of famous Americans
The book's user friendly format is designed so that the reader can search
for scripts by series name, program (script) title or author or adapter.
The listings also include, when the information was available, the date the
script was broadcast, and the network or station that aired the program.
RADIO SCRIPTS IN PRINT sells for $[removed], plus $[removed] shipping and handling
and can be ordered directly from Book Hunter Press at
[removed], bookhunterpress@[removed], or by
phone 914-245-6608. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
RADIO SCRIPTS IN PRINT is the latest OTR reference book that my wife and I
have collaborated on. Earlier this year we co-authored "A Resource Guide to
the Golden Age of Radio: Special Collections, Bibliography, and the
Internet," the first ever guide to 3,800 primary and secondary sources for
researching the Golden Age of Radio. Many of the 2,300 special collections
identified in the Resource Guide also contain scripts. We're pleased to
report that the book has received wide praise from academic libraries and
radio researchers.
