Great question!
I've heard Packy McCloud on the "Straight Arrow" program often say
"Keno, Steve" in agreeing to something said by Steve Adams (Straight
Arrow's secret identity) and I never questioned the origin or spelling
of the term.
Bill Harper, who has a new book on "Straight Arrow" coming out from
Bear Manor Media, may be the one to set us all straight.

Subject: 2007 Old-Time Radio & TV Convention
The Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention web-site has been updated for
September 2007.
The following may be of interest to old-time radio fans . . .
Guests include James MacArthur, who made his radio debut with his mother,
Helen Hayes, on THEATER GUILD ON THE AIR.
Annette Andre, who did a ton of radio dramas in England during the 1950s and
1960s.
Ed Walker, who hosts the old-time radio program in the Metro-Washington, DC
/ Maryland area will be attending. For anyone who did not know, Ed was one
of the two Joy Boys on radio during the 1950s, about the same time Bob and
Ray were doing their radio morning skits.
Terry Salomonson will be offering a presentation of THE LONE RANGER, and
possibly be playing a special recording during the presentation.
Michael Hayde will be discussing the radio and TV versions of SUPERMAN,
including playing clips.
A fascinating panel about voice actors Daws Butler, Paul Frees and Mel
Blanc.
The Radio Adventures of Sam Spade will be discussed, offering trivia about
the "lost" episodes.
Movies and TV shows playing in the movie room based on radio programs and/or
radio characters:
Command Performance (1944)
Mail Call (1944)
Charlie McCarthy, Detective (1939)
The Gracie Allen Murder Case (1941)
Sky King (1956)
Mike Fright (the classic Our Gang film short)
The site has been updated and as soon as we can get a photo of Ed Walker,
we'll have it on the site too. We are still booking events for the
convention so anyone wanting to host a panel about anything nostalgic, the
door is open. We are looking for a few more old-time radio related panels.

Subject: "Hear It Now"
hello all --
Thanks to our esteemed list administrator for sharing the audio of the
premiere episode of "Hear It Now" through his blog. I was able to
download it today and listen to it while doing some work. As another
Murrow fan, the only thing I can say is that it was a real treat.
Though I've seen the handful of "See It Now" episodes that have been
made available, this was the first time in 23 years of collecting Murrow
programs that I've been able to "Hear It Now." Thanks, Charlie!
While listening to the program, I was very happy to hear protracted
extracts of the very beautiful theme for "Hear It Now," which was also
used on "See It Now." This theme was composed by David Diamond, and
conducted by Alfredo Antonini (who did a lot of work for CBS during this
era).
Is anyone aware of a recording of this music without any voice-over?
The [removed] page for this theme (listed under "See It Now")
doesn't indicate any recording was commercially released, but I thought
I'd ask in hopes a recording is out there that I'm not aware of. :)
Thanks, everybody!

Dear OTR fans;
May the peace, joy andhope of this Advent Season be with all of you.
Mike Hamm wrote:

In looking through the Straight Arrow files scripter, Sheldon Stark, a New
Yorker, wrote in Packy using the "slang" expression, "keno." When you hear
Packy use the word you know just what he means! As when the Sheriff in the
first Straight Arrow adventure says, "by gravy, I savvy now." You know what
he means, but now that the question has been raised I am not sure what
"keno" means or for that matter, what "by gravy" means! In contexts Packy
saying "keno" implies that he is in agreement thus giving the "keno" the
meaning; "I agree". Sorry Mike and OTR fans I cannot give an origin for this
word. Tom Mix in the comics would always say "opine" when giving an opinion.
That word was once in common use, maybe "keno" was derived from a common
word. On second thought it has a beatnik flavor; "daddyo", etc. and was a
sang used in New York.
Manituwah,
Bill

Kelli Stanley mentions a fondness for the song "Baby, It's Cold
Outside" I like this song too, but I'm more familiar with a rather
contemporary version - a duet between Brian Setzer and Ann Margaret.
Now there's a rather odd couple :)
Also, thanks to Brian Taves and/or Gary in NH for the link to the "PG
Wodehouse and Hollywood " book. It came in very handy.
Happy Holidays to all!

Subject: Regis Radio Corp. (Again)
Earlier, a couple of people wondered *what* it was in addition to my
wondering *who* owned it. I now have some answers.
It's a bit difficult to tell because the Articles of Incorporation
have, of course, been drawn by a lawyer and he has covered virtually
everything under the sun, but Regis Radio Corporation appears to have
wanted to be an "all-things-to-all-people" communications
buzzsaw. In its Certificate of Incorporation, the Corporation's
purposes are to:
1. own and operate radio stations both in America and abroad;
2. obtain, create, produce, broadcast directly or indirectly any
kind of radio transmission;
3. originate programming and disseminate them by means of
electricity, magnetism, electro-magnetic waves, variations or impulses;
4. improve the art or science of radio broadcasting;
5. engage in the radio business but not limiting itself to radio
(specifically mentioning television);
6. manufacture, buy, sell, export and import any and all parts
required in radio broadcasting;
7. buy, rent, sell, lease, sub-lease, distribute, exploit, import,
export, exhibit or license any and all forms of material;
8. print and publish materials, including magazines;
9. engage in the advertising business;
10. act as an artist agency;
11. purchase and operate theatres, opera houses or other similar
places of amusement;
There are many other "purposes" described but this gives you an idea.
Finally, four people appear to have been behind Regis Radio
Corporation. The Directors were Anne E. McPartland, Jessie
Feitelson, Mary Kaelin and Julian B. Rosenthal. All except Rosenthal
were shareholders. The address provided for the business was 630
Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, New York, New York. This is the same
address used by the attorney for the corporation, Sol A.
Rosenblatt. I've mentioned Rosenblatt before but the four people
actually running the corporation and not known to me. An initial
Google search has turned up nothing, so it just adds to the list of
characters I don't know much about connected to the Sam Spade Show.

The term is TL, which was a slang term in the 1930s
and earlier. It's from "trade last", originally in
reference to a compliment given to a person in return
for a compliment from that person, but used broadly of
any compliment, or more narrowly of a compliment given
through an intermediary.

Don't remember any particular Benny programs where Rochester's last name was
used, but If I was asked what his last name was my answer would be Van
Jones, because I've heard many times between episodes from 1937, when Eddie
Anderson became regular cast member, until the last show in 1957.
I looked up" Eddie Anderson " in John Dunning's book "On The Air" and Eddie
Anderson is shown as a cast member named Rochester Van Jones.

Subject: Two Goats for Christmas party
Hi Gang -
In issue 315, Charles Salt inquired about a "Nightbeat" episode where Randy
tries to find two goats as props for a Christmas Party. Charles is trying to
locate that episode.
This week, "Radio Classics" on XM Channel 165 broadcasts a very similar
story. This might be the one that Charles needs. It is NOT a "Nightbeat"
episode that is being broadcast. The story is from the series "Radio City
Playhouse". It might be an adaptation of the Nightbeat episode.
This program will be re-broadcast two more times this week. Tomorrow
(Saturday, December 23), at 7:30 PM EST and Sunday (December 24) at 11:30 AM
EST.
I have no connection with Radio Classics, but I do like to listen while I'm
in the car. These broadcasts are often "shortened" to meet time
requirements, but for the most part the entire story line is present. A
printable
schedule is published every week at

Back in the days of reel-to reel; one always worried that this was a
dying hobby. That the dealers and stations serving up OTR would fade
from the scene. It seems that while that fear may have been true for
many dealers, the Internet has made the past far more accessible than
