Regret to report I just received a call that Irving Brecher has left
us at 94

A life well-lived, approaching the century mark, is an occasion for
celebration rather than regret.

Rest, Irving; peace, friends & family.

All of those programs as well as "Speed Gibson" are available at -

Some collections are incomplete, some are kept in multiple directories.

The original "Moon Over Africa" is OTR from the 1930's.

Programs with titles beginning with "The" are usually listed under
the "T" directory such as "The Adventures of Superman".

Subject: Paging Miss Pinkerton

Although clearing up confusion on radio's lady detectives was one of
my primary reasons for writing "Private Eyelashes," it seems the
identity of NBC's "MIss Pinkerton" still eludes Kenneth Clarke, who
wonders if her name was Hilda Adams or Mary Vance. Randy Riddle was
kind enough to point out to him that radio's "MIss Pinkerton" was
Mary Vance.

Let's review the [removed] my book makes imminently clear, there
were three Miss Pinkerton's: one in the novels and short stories of
Mary Roberts Rinehart, a second one in a movie, and the third on
radio. Joan Blondell portrayed Pinkerton in the latter two.

Rinehart's character, Hilda Adams, appeared in two novels and two
short stories, beginning in 1914. She was a nurse (like Rinehart), a
spinster, and a part-time undercover operative for a detective
agency. In 1932 the occasional nickname of Adams became the title of
her mystery-adventure, "MIss Pinkerton." Warner Brothers bought the
rights to this novel and cast Blondell in the lead of the film titled
"MIss Pinkerton," released in 1932.

In the summer of 1941, Blondell and then-husband, Dick Powell, were
formulating a new series for themselves and their writers settled on
a lady detective, Mary Vance, who inherits her uncle's detective firm
and thus is drawn into the business. Did Blondell, recalling her
movie of nine years prior, suggest the title of the radio show?
Probably, but I can't prove it. Of course Vance bore no resemblance
to Adams; she was a law student not a nurse, she was young and sexy
not an elderly spinster, and she owned her own detective agency.

As my fellow OTR historians, including Jim Cox and Martin Grams, Jr.,
know well, one can never discover every factual item about any given
radio series so new data continues to surface. Since my book was
published in 2004, additional research has reflected that NBC might
not have ever aired this series. While I suspected it was a summer
replacement for another series, Jay Hickerson's recent research seems
to indicate the sole audio copy we have was just the audition and the
series was never actually launched.

From Those Were The Days --

11/23

1929 - Shirley Booth and Ed Gardner were married on this day. Miss Booth
was famous for her television acting role ("Hazel"); but we remember
when she and her husband played Miss Duffy and Archie on Duffy's Tavern.

1958 - One of the last drama programs on radio debuted. It was unusual
in that it followed the TV show of the same name. Have Gun Will Travel
was broadcast on CBS and starred John Dehner as Paladin.

11/24

1937 - Music from the Raymor Ballroom in Boston, Massachusetts was
beamed coast to coast on NBC. The special guests during this broadcast
were Glenn Miller and his orchestra.

11/24

1920 - The first play-by-play coverage of a football game was broadcast
by WTAW in College Station, TX. Texas University beat the Aggies of
Texas A&M, 7-3.

1944 - CBS presented The FBI in Peace and War for the first time. It
became one of the longest-running crime shows on radio -- lasting 14 years.

1945 - A spoof of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic, [removed] Pinafore, was
broadcast on The Fred Allen Show. The spoof was titled, The Brooklyn
Pinafore. Joining actress Shirley Booth in the skit was baseball great
Leo 'The Lip' Durocher.

1960 - Radio actors were put out of work when CBS axed five serials
(soap operas) from the airwaves. We said so long to The Second Mrs.
Burton (after 14 years), Young Doctor Malone, Whispering Streets (after
8 years), Right to Happiness (after 21 years) and Ma Perkins (after 27
wonderful years.) In 1940, the high point for these radio programs,
there were as many as 45 on the air each day!

11/26

1945 - The program, Bride and Groom, debuted on the NBC Blue network. It
is estimated that 1,000 newly-wed couples were interviewed on the
program before it left the airwaves in 1950.

11/27

1930 - Broadcasting from "...the little theatre off Times Square,"
according to the shows introduction, The First Nighter was first heard.
The program, which actually originated from Chicago, then from
Hollywood, aired for 23 years and featured dramas and comedies.

11/28

1932 - Groucho Marx performed on radio for the first time.

11/29

1950 - "I Fly Anything", starring singer Dick Haymes in the role of
cargo pilot Dockery Crane, premiered on ABC. With a title like that, is
it any wonder the show only lasted one season? Haymes went back to
singing and did very well, thank you.

Subject: Save now on Dunning's book

This has been mentioned before on the Digest, but the enormity of
this OTR bargain bears repeating.

John Dunning's great book, ON THE AIR, is a large 840 page
encyclopedia and if you only have one OTR reference book, this has to
be it! When it came out in 1998, Oxford University Press charged $ 75
and I gratefully bought my first copy. Years later they reduced it to
$ 60, and two years later to $ 50 at which time I bought my second
copy. (The first had developed a cracked binding from overuse.)

For this holiday season, Oxford has slashed the price to $ [removed],
making it the greatest bargain in OTR history. (And shipping and
handling is only $ [removed]) This may be a close-out sale, so don't miss
it. You can get it on-line at <[removed]> or call
them at toll-free 800-451-7556.

DISCLAIMER: John consulted me for his entries on Bobby Benson, Candy
Matson (and other lady detectives) and some of the RCMP heroes of the
airwaves. He also thanked me, as well as dozens of other OTR
researchers, in his "Credits" section.

Subject: One Man's Family

I've been listening to "One Man's Family," which is a departure for me as I
don't usually go for this type of show. I've now heard about 20 episodes and
find them rather interesting/amusing but I have a couple of questions I hope
someone here can answer.

What are these books and chapters they keep talking about? The 1947 show I
last heard claimed to be "Book 65, Chapter 3." Book 65? What's that all
about? According to Dunning, the show first aired in 1932. How was this show
broken down into books and chapters?

Another thing: Dunning says the theme song was "Destiny Waltz" from 1932-41,
then changed to "Waltz Patrice" for the rest of the run. I have a record
album called "Radio's Famous Theme Songs" and on that record, One Man's
Family theme is listed as "Journey Into Melody," a very dramatic orchestral
piece, very different from the organ thing I hear on the show. What's with
that?

One more thing: One of the things I find amusing about the show is the
formal language these supposedly ordinary people used. Did anyone even back
in the 1930s refer to the head of the family as "Father Nelson" or "Father
Jones" as the characters here refer to "Father Barbour"? And did anyone ever
address their family as "family" as Betty does in one of the shows I heard
the other day: "Oh, family, wait till you hear what happened!" Did listeners
really accept this kind of dialog?

Any insight into any of this will be appreciated.

I read with interest Bill Abbott's posting about how "Family Theatre's" Father
Patrick Payton;

has entered the Roman Catholic Church's investigative
stage for possible elevation to Sainthood this morning. in the
Archdiocese Of Baltimore. It is a long slow process, but still, it has
got to be an OTR first.

As a laspsed Roman Catholic, I checked a patron saints website and found that
the Archangel Gabriel was the patron saint of radio. In a way, this makes
sense being that Gabriel was, after all, a messenger; however, Gabriel -
unless you count his namesake Heatter -- never sat behind a radio microphone.
I do sincerely hope that if Father Peyton makes it to the Calendar of Saints
that the [removed] Church might consider him to be a modern-day patron saint of
radio.
