Since we've been chatting about MBS in recent [removed] spurred me to do
something I've done before. I tried Googling Mutual in hopes I'd find a page
I'd discovered [removed] with many audio files from the "modern day"
Mutual Broadcasting System. There were ID stingers, newscasts, and a bunch
more. But this time I couldn't find hide nor hair of it. Can anyone help?

I'm guessing Zoglin is less than middle-aged.
Your are probably correct.
Does anybody in the media give thanks for what radio did anymore?
The current generation of writers think everything began with Television. If
something happened before their time, it isn't important.

On the [removed] list, Jim Cox writes:
Zoglin puts down TV legends like Bud Collyer and John Charles Daly, too
(both, incidentally, carryovers from that other medium).
Well, in all fairness, Groucho Marx and Garry Moore, two OTR legends, did
fare very well on that same list. Groucho was mentioned right after Bob
Barker,
in fact, and Moore after Marx. And the only reason Daly and Collyer were "put
down" was because they were being compared to Moore, not, say, Regis.
As for the others you mentioned being left off, the only one I thought was
especially glaring was Art Linkletter. It would've been nice to mention
Collyer
and Jack Bailey, too, IMHO. Many of the others are better known for radio than
TV (the list was of TV hosts specifically), especially Bob Hawk. Ralph
Edwards made his mark in TV mostly as a reality show host ("This is Your
Life") and
a producer. And I didn't realize Arthur Godfrey ever hosted a game show?
(Unless you're counting "Talent Scouts" and GS fans are fiercely split over
whether to count talent shows as game shows. Many of us don't.)
As to whether the author was middle-aged, I'm guessing he's probably close to
my age (43) since he can actually remember Art Fleming hosting "Jeopardy!"

Subject: Live Radio Theater In Kentucky
If you're in range of Owensboro, Kentucky, anytime around June 12-17, 2007:
Seven radio theatre plays will be performed live -- three times each --
over five days, as part of the first annual International Mystery
Writers Festival.
...and visitors to this Owensboro event would be wise to check out the
International Bluegrass Music Museum where there are great exibits on
bluegrass artists and their strong involvement in oldtime radio. Plus, the
restored birthplace of Bill Monroe, a member of the WSM Grand Ole Opry from
1939 to 1996, is thirty miles south in Rosine KY. He's buried in Rosine too.

Subject: Jack Benny phone calls
In our local paper today was an article by a David Bauder about TV
networks trying to insert humor into commercials. It quoted a prof.
Robert Thompson of Syracuse University as saying Jack Benny's radio
show would often include humorous phone calls with his sponsor. Have
I missed something? In all the shows I've listened to there have
been many phone calls, Rochester, Mary's mother, the telephone operators etc.
Other than perhaps one time do I remember him talking to his
sponsor. I must admit I've only listened to four or five hundred of
the shows, so maybe I missed something. Could some digesters point
me in the direction of these sponsor phone call shows.
Thanks
Keith
