The article convinced me to build a phono oscillator station in my bedroom
and broadcast to my neighborhood, but after a few months on the air, in
Boston, I was detected and surrendered the home-made transmitter.
They got you for a *phono oscillator*???? Did you have, like, a final
amplifier stage on the thing?
You should publish the plans. Inquiring minds ([removed], potential delinquents)
want to know. 8-)

Subject: Reality radio
Have been listening to the radio show Nightwatch from 1954. The show has a
reporter that rides in police car with officers as they respond to calls.
The show seems to be a forerunner of the COPS type reality TV show. The show
only ran for a year but to me is one of the most interesting OTR shows I
have listened to because it is based on what is actually happening at the
moment.
One show had a 15 year old boy arrested for breaking into a gas station
and when his mom talks to the officers at police station you can feel her
pain at having her son arrested.
Are there any other reality type OTR shows that were on the air back in
OTR days?

Subject: Norman Corwin Book Again
Martin Grams Jr. wrote:
The book (for the interested party) is
ON A NOTE OF TRIUMPH: NORMAN CORWIN AND THE GOLDEN YEARS OF RADIO
by R. Leroy Bannerman
Foreward by Erik Barnouw
The book is indeed out of print and may or may not be difficult to find.
Sorry I didn't have the exact title and author earlier in the week.
I believe that I am the interested party that you are refering to. But what
is interesting is that my book, and I am looking at as I write this, is
called "Norman Corwin and Radio: The Golden Years" It is by Leroy Bannerman
with Foreword by Erik Barnow. It is a hardcover book and shows a publish date
of 1986 by The University of Alabama Press. There is no previous publish date
shown.
There is no mention of "On a Note of Triumph" in the title on the cover or
inside the book.
Is it the same book? If it is why the difference in titles?
Just wondering!

Subject: Early Illegal Radio
Russ Butler's story brought to mind an illegal radio station I was part of
in the late 50's. At the time I was living in Redondo Beach, Ca. My friend
built a Knight Wireless kit and somehow managed to increase the power so we
had about a two-mile range on the AM dial. We strung a long wire antenna as
high as we could get it, hooked a microphone and record player to the
transmitter and went "on the air".
One of our ways to gain listeners was to have a contest. Our one and only
program was the Ancient Record Hour using old 78 rpm records from our
parents' collection. We would call a person in range of our transmitter,
have them tune us in, then play a record asking them to identify it. We had
very few winners but when we did, we would send them a packet of "valuable"
coupons in an envelope with our station call letters, KHAM, but no return
address of course. As I remember our station only lasted one summer as we
soon lost interest.

Subject: Time Once Again for The Cinnamon Bear
Dear Readers:
You, your children, grandchildren, and others in your family might make a
happy discovery this year. I hope you locate the Cinnamon Bear serial,
which is now so accessible. It is, in my opinion, the grandest story for
children that was ever recorded. It tells the happy story of Judy and
Jimmy Barton who search for the missing silver star that sits atop their
Christmas tree. (The ornament was stolen from their attic by the Crazy
Quilt Dragon.) They are aided in this search by the Cinnamon Bear, who
takes the twins to Maybeland -- a country so "magical" that it defines the
world where most small children live.
Please listen to the 26 installments (15 minutes apiece), which were
recorded in 1937 and which feature old time radio personalities you will
all be able to name. The show is designed to be played beginning the day
after Thanksgiving and continuing through Christmas Eve.
Many families have made The Cinnamon Bear part of their annual traditions.
It is so timeless it can be played year after year.
I hope you make the Cinnamon Bear part of your Christmas this year. I
guarantee you won't be disappointed.
