Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: re: Clement Freud
I was surprised and saddened to hear about the death of Clement. Having
long been a fan of Just a Minute, it was a blow. Alas, in later years Paul
Merton dominated the show too much, winning many of the episodes, so CF
didn't have the presence he used to, but on looking back to the Kenneth
Williams years, it reminds me how timeless all that is.
On a related note, if anyone here has a good selection of Does the Team
Think?, PLEASE get in touch. This is my current favorite. I go to sleep
every night listening to the few 26 mp3 shows of it I have. I need more!!

At home I have the address for the Thomas Radio company as I sent my radio
back for repair in 1998.
My suggestion - there are a lot of "Thomas Radios" for sale on ebay
inexpensively. Buy a model similar to yours for parts - or just buy another
radio like your.

Subject: Update on Joan Alexander
My grateful thanks to three Digesters, Doug Douglass, Dan Hughes, and
Michael Hayde, who just provided me with an AP release of April 2008
which reflected that Joan Alexander, a spry 90 year old in NYC, was
suing her financial advisors for bilking her out of millions. Joan
apparently married very well and her late husband, Arthur Stanton,
willed her over $ 70 million upon his death in 1987. Her suit charged
that her two financial advisors and both their companies lost
millions of her money in speculative failures, so much so that she
had to borrow money to pay her taxes.
The article also relates that she played both "Lois Lane" on the
Adventures of Superman and "Della Street" on radio's Perry Mason. Her
daughter, Jane Stanton Hitchcock is a novelist.
Moreover, Michael Hayde pointed out I was misled by the Superman
Festival web site which falsely claims that the life statue of Noel
Neill will be dedicated this year. In actuality, all the funding is
not quite in place so all that exists now is a small model of Neill.
The unveiling and dedication is probably years away.

Subject: No radios in the [removed]
While writing to another trader today, I recalled knowing some people my
age (75) and older who never new the pleasure of listening to a radio.
Some had parents who did not own a radio. Some had battery radios on
the farm, but saved the juice for only a few programs, and I suppose some
did not listen because their churches did not approve of "Devil Boxes"
"Evil movies" and the like.
I feel sorry for them because even tho I could provide them with some
of the programs they missed, they do not want to hear them. Without a
picture, they are lost!
In a few weeks I will be attending our annual South Dakota Retired
Teachers Association convention. Our door prize from the Aberdeen Unit
will be some of my favorite shows on CDs. I am doing them in .wav files
since some do not have .mp3 players.
I have chosen from Quiet Please, Suspense, Mysterious Traveler, some
Jack Benny, Escape. Now tell me what I have [removed]

"4-21-1907 - Wade Mainer - Weaversville, NC
country: (Mainer's Crazy Mountaineers) "Crazy Water Crystals Barn Dance"
THANKS, Ron Sayles, for listing the 102nd (!) birthday of the last of the
first generation of country music pioneers!
Wade is still performing with his wife Julia (in her late 90s) by her side.
In the 30s Wade worked along with his brother [removed] on radio stations in
Charlotte, Raleigh, Asheville and Knoxville.
He retired from recording and broadcasting after WWII finding another career
with General Motors in 1953.
After he retired, in 1973, he resumed his country music activities.
Several years ago Wade was honored with the annual Heritage Award during Uncle
Dave Macon Days in Murfreesboro, TN. That weekend he played the Grand Ole Opry
and I had the honor of escorting him to an interview with Eddie Stubbs on
WSM.
Wade Mainer is incredible and a treasure to us interested in oldtime country
music on oldtime radio!

Subject: Happy Birthday to the Bard
William Shakespeare had the courtesy to die on his birthday, thus
enabling future high school students during English tests to more
easily remember April 23rd as both his birth date and death date. So
Happy Birthday, Will!
Many programs, even series, in the Golden Age of Radio drew heavily
upon Shakespeare's plays. Martin Grams, Jr. wrote a comprehensive
article on the majority of Shakespeare-based radio programs for the
August 2005 issue of RADIO RECALL. It's posted on our web site, so if
you want to honor the Bard today by reviewing his OTR history, just

Subject: What is this (open reel) tape?
I've come across this open reel tape (not a coated reel) that's almost
always bad. It locks up and squeals towards the end of the tape. It's
labeled Ampex 641, but it doesn't look like 641; it's a chocolatey-brown
color. Does anyone know what this stuff is? Baking hasn't been effective
on non-coated reels I've tried in the past; I hope it might be effective on
this stuff.

I have a transcription for program 22 in the series, "Letter from the

dated 1873 - "fifteen years ago".
