Jim Erskine <homeway@[removed]; asked:

Can anyone recommend any OTR programs about dogs? I've got a young
listener who loves dog stories, but I'm having a hard time coming up
with anything but Sgt. Preston and a few Lassie episodes. It doesn't
look like there's much beyond that.

One that impressed me when I heard it was an episode of _Buster
Brown's Gang_. It's about a willful young boy, Tom Kerry, who is
always disobeying his parents. When he disregards their warning about
staying away from the ice he goes too far and would perish except for
his faithful dog Pete. The ending of this one is remarkable for a
show for young children; I've often wondered if it could be done
today on television. Seems unlikely. Unfortunately, the version I
have is identified only as [removed], and I no longer recall what that
means, nor can I tell you where to find this. I could send you a
file, but I'm running behind on such requests, so it might be a bit.

Another is an episode of X-1 about a Russian satellite that crashes
near a suburban neighborhood and the kids who find and adopt it
occupant, one of the original Muttniks. I can't remember the ending.

To answer Michael Biel's question:

Did he specifically state the years, including 1959, as previous posters
indicated. If he started in 1950, then nine years can include up to 1958,
not necessarily extending thru 1959.

NO, he just stated NINE Years, but figure it out he ended radio in
March of 1957 there must have some time to get a s TV show together.
He stared he made 3 pilots of the TV Gildy, and then to find a sponsor
etc. and hire a cast I would assume that all that could take 2 years but
the time the last TV episode #37 was over. so maybe rounder of the year
s form 8 1/2 to 9. I don't know ! Maybe he meant 9 seasons.

Answer Richard Carpenter;

Anything is possible. One interview was recorded in 1982; I'm not sure of
the date of the other. In both, Waterman took care to note that he and Harold
Peary had played Gildy for the same length of time -- nine years. So who knows.

The Interview that I refer to, was recorded By Chuck Schaden on March
17, 1984 in Van Nuys, Caliornia, Waterman did say he and Peary had the
part of Gildy for 9 years each.

In those Chicago had live radio on WGN (Mutual),
WCFL (NBC Blue), WMAQ (NBC Red),
WBBM (CBS) amd WIND (local) and several
others. He had worked at all of then.

I know all about WENR & WLS , But I should made the radio stations info.
as a quotation, because he named the stations.

As to his early career you are correct. I didn't want to take the time.
I let my 2 index fingers do the typing and they get tired., sorry about
that.

Time to start the Cinnamon Bear! I'm going to continue my tradition of
broadcasting it via a part-15 AM transmitter (home transmitter) to one of

I think tonight might be the '36 Zenith 6-S-52 console.

Subject: Dogs in OTR

Last issue, someone asked about OTR shows that involved dogs beyond Challenge
of the Yukon.

There are some Lassie and Rin Tin Tin shows in circulation. Quite of few of
the long-running comedy shows, like Fibber McGee would have plots involving
animals now and then. I went to [removed] and went onto a page of a
series and then just searched for "dog"

The 5-part Johnny Dollar has one set of shows about a show dog, the "Laird
Douglas Douglas of Heatherscote Matter." It is, unfortunately, one of the
weakest entries in the series,,,, but even marginal Johnny Dollar is better
than most OTR

I've been listening to the entire circulating Suspense run, and some of the
episodes involve dogs. Not all of them are favorable to our canine friends,
but these shows have been quite good:

6830. Suspense. May 17, 1945. CBS net. "Two Birds With One Stone".
Sponsored by: Roma Wines. A writer kills his wife, making it look like
suicide, but is foiled by a faithful dog. Dana Andrews, Mel Dinelli
(writer), Cathy Lewis, Joseph Kearns, Wally Maher, Truman Bradley
(commercial spokesman), Joseph Kearns (announcer), William Spier
(producer, director), Elsa Maxwell (commercial spokeswoman), Lucien
Moraweck (composer), Lud Gluskin (conductor). 30:06. Audio condition:
Excellent. Complete.

24231. Suspense. March 1, 1954. CBS net. "The Barking Death". Sponsored
by: Auto-Lite (a salute to Studebaker). An infected dog escapes and is
roaming the city. The dog is adopted by a little boy and brought into
his home. William Powell, Junius Matthews, Hy Averback, Dick Beals, Ted
Bliss, Joseph Kearns, Jack Kruschen, Paula Winslowe, Jean Wood, Larry
Thor (announcer), Morton Fine (writer), David Friedkin (writer),
Elliott Lewis (producer, director), Harlow Wilcox (commercial
spokesman), Lucien Moraweck (composer), Lud Gluskin (conductor),
William Zigler (president of American Foundation Of The Blind). 1/2
hour. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

90734. Suspense. December 22, 1957. CBS net origination, AFRTS
rebroadcast. "Dog Star". All that a little girl wants for Christmas is
a little puppy. She finally gets [removed] outer space! Little Chipka
falls to Earth from a Russian satellite. A fine Christmas story!
Michael Frost (writer), Evelyn Rudie (her first appearance on radio),
Norm Alden, Dick Beals, Lou Krugman, Jack Kruschen, Shepard Menken,
Shirley Mitchell, Sam Pierce, Ben Wright, George Walsh (announcer),
William N. Robson (producer, director, host). 24:19. Audio condition:

Subject: Waterman and his time as Gildy

Michale Biel answered Frank McGurn about Willard Watermans time as The Great
Gildersleeve, as follows:

and dug out my tape of Chuck Schaden's 48
minute, March1984, interview with Willard
Waterman, and he said he did Gildy for 9 years.

Did he specifically state the years, including 1959, as previous posters
indicated. If he started in 1950, then nine years can include up to 1958,
not necessarily extending thru 1959.

Don't forget that, in the Golden Age of Radio, a season lasted 39 weeks,
followed by summer vacation. A 39 week season of shows would start about
September or October of a given year, then finish in June of the following
year. Thus, if Willard Waterman said he had been Gildy for 9 years, then the
9th year would have ended in 1959 (assuming the first year he was Gildy
started in 1950). I think you see my point. Please bare this in mind when
calculating the years anyone plays a role on a series.
To the best of my knowledge, all radio series ran from September/October of
one year and always ended in June of the next year.
I hope this helps.

Subject: Bow-Wow

JIm Erskine asks if there are any OTR shows about dogs, other than
Lassie and Sgt. Preston.

Well, first of all there are at least a dozen copies of Lassie, and
in most of them she (actually, he) plays another breed of dog. Then
there's the parody of Lassie which Bob & Ray created called "Tippy
the Wonder Dog" with Gramps and Little Jasper. Yukon King usually
has a major role in many of the hundreds of Sgt. Preson episodes in
circulation.

But let's move on. There are no surviving copies of the NBC or CBS's
1930s versions of "Rin-Tin-Tin," but the Mutual 1955 series has two
copies in circulation. Bobby Benson's dog "Hero" was in a lot of his
adventures in the 1949-55 Mutual version, but he is scarcely
mentioned in any of the existing less-than-20 audio copies we have
now. The radio scripts never specified which breed Hero was, but in
the Bobby Benson comic books, he is drawn as a collie.

In the Thirties, there was a slew of network programs on NBC Blue
which put the spotlight on dogs, but very few audio copies have been
found: Albert Payson Terhune's "Dog Stories" 1934-36, "Animal Close-
Ups" 1936, "Dog Heroes" 1936-39, and Don Carney's Dog Chats" 1933.
The only NBC show about dogs which survived in audio form is Bob
Becker's "Dog Tales" which ran, on and off, from 1932 to 1944. Two
copies of this program (one from 1938 and another from 1941) are in
circulation. CBS had one show : "Don Lang's True Animal Stories"
1932-33 and we've not found any audio copies of it yet.

Little Orphan Annie's dog, Sandy, was more prominent in the comic
strip than in her radio show, but it might be worth while to check
out the copies of this series.

There are three existing audio copies of "The Adventures of
Champion", Gene Autry's horse but Gene does not appear in the series.
The boy-hero is Ricky West, and besides Champion, he has a German
Shepherd named "Rebel" who is prominent in the story-lines.

I haven't listened to "Mark Trail" lately, so I don't know how often
his big dog is called upon to help.

If I remember correctly, the requester was interested in playing shows

Shows like Escape's "Back for Christmas" or Suspense's "Out for

  Hello, all.

I guess it's time that I added my two cents to the discussion started by
Mark Nichols over the weekend. Yes, it is true that Radio Spirits is back in
business. This division of MediaBay was purchased in the fall and will be
run as a small private business (as it probably should have been from the
start). I will officially start working for them on December 3rd and I am
very excited about all of the possibilities that come with a new and improved
Radio Spirits.

Of course, it will take some time for us to make some adjustments and get
up to speed, but think it will be worth the effort.

One and the same. Actor-announcer McIntire, heard on THE MARCH OF

very familiar character face in films (WINCHESTER 73, ELMER GANTRY,
