Subject: Jack Webb's Casts
Andy Blatt notices that Jack Webb uses certain radio actors in his TV shows
who have been heard often on his radio shows. Yes, Jack had a group of
actors who worked successfully for him, so he, wisely, used them whenever
possible. These included Howard Culver, Virginia Gregg, Harry Bartell and
others noted by Andy. Such actors also were in his full-lnegth movie " -30
" and others of his creation. A wise man, that!

Just a note about a wonderful man, Art Gilmore. Beside being one of, if
not the best announcers in Hollywood, he was also a fine actor. In
addition to that he was and still is a tall, lean, handsome man with an
air of dignity about him. If you look up the word class---you will find
a picture of Art Gilmore.
With these credits as a performer, they are not the main reason Jack
Webb used Art on Dragnet and other police shows. Webb told Art that he
looked the way most policemen thought they looked. Art usually played
an officer of rank, Lieutenant, Captain, etc. and played them well.

Having seen Mr. Gilmore, along with Peggy Webber, Harry Bartell and Howard

It certainly was when the producer-director is Jack Webb! Seriously, Webb
was most comfortable hiring the people with whom he'd worked all his

like Herb Ellis, Barney Phillips, Sam Edwards and lots and lots of Virginia
Gregg in those programs.

Subject: Radio Actors on TV
Andy Blatt writes that he has seen radio actors on programs done in the
60's. He questions:
Was it common for such programs to
>>contain such a plethora of former radio actors. Was
it because they were newly-unemployed and available
for work or was it a tribute to Jack Webb that he
hired people he might have worked with in radio or
people he knew from radio?
One can only guess at this point. Given: Many radio people had also been
actors in other media, so why shouldn't they accept acting jobs on
television or on the stage? And working puts food on the table.
Before "Dragnet", Jack Webb was a very busy radio actor and certainly wanted
to go with the people whose talent and friendship he knew and could trust.
But there's more to it. He wanted his TV Dragnet to have a certain rhythm
of the lines, just as the radio show had. According to Amzie Strickland, he
didn't want memorization or acting. There were charts with the dialogs, and
if an actor delivered those lines in a reasonably theatrical manner, Webb
would reject that, in favor of the rhythm that we are all familiar with, in
"Dragnet", and which was later caricatured with satire by the great Stan
Freberg. A serious, no nonsense actor, Amzie was often told by Webb: "You
are memorizing and acting again." He wanted it his way.
I am sure that Webb was smart enough to know that his best bet to control
vocal delivery was to choose radio actors: people who were used to reading,
and people who did not have to memorize. The many full facial shots in his
Dragnet shows proves that he was not too interested in body language.

Subject: The Comedy Show
I remember this well also. It broadcast on Sunday mornings on the West coast
when I was a youngster, and I would lie in bed and howl with laughter while
the
various snippets were played. I think the original host was Jack Carney
(sp?),
but he passed away sometime in the mid 1980s and was succeeded by Dick
Cavett.
That show turned me onto all sorts of comedy, both OTR and more contemporary.
I
don't know when it was discontinued or why.

Mostly the latter. Jack Webb was known among friends to be very loyal to
those friends. He often used them in roles throughout his radio career
where he had control. A good example, was in Pete Kelly's Blues, he used
Dick Cathcart to play the music. Cathcart was, I believe, an old army
buddy of Webb's. He also used as blues singer Maggie Jackson, the singer
Meredith Howard who was a high school friend.

Subject: Dealer Room Expanded
Good news for OTR dealers!
The dealer rooms for The Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention got expanded an
extra section, thanks to the hotel. Just worked it out this afternoon with
them. As a result, we have room for a few more dealer tables, and we won't
be sticking people out in the hallway which we feared was going to happen.
There were dealers that we had to turn down, regrettably, because we sold
out of dealer tables - it was a first come, first serve basis to keep it
fair for all. Anyone who wants to set up, there is extra table space now
and once again, on a first come, first serve basis. I am also e-mailing
those who are on the waiting list, who gave us their e-mail address so they
get a crack at tables too.
Anyone wanting space, drop me a line by e-mail off the digest and I'll hook
you up.

Hi, folks. We don't hear much about Canadian OTR on the digest, so if you'll
indulge me a moment, I'll share the jist of an article I read recently. Don
Messer was one of Canada's fiddling legends. He is frequently associated with
the province of Prince Edward Island, because many of his radio shows
originated from Charlottetown, PEI, and his band of musicians and dancers was
known as Don Messer and his Islanders. Messer was actually born in Tweedside,
New Brunswick. He began playing fiddle at the age of seven. After hosting
several radio shows, he had a TV show called Don Messer's Jubilee from 1958 to
1969. He died in 1973 of a heart attack. On July 23rd, one of his first
fiddles will be auctioned off in Coldbrook, Nova Scotia. Organizers hope to
fetch upwards of $7,000. His daughter, Dawn Messer Attis, who is already 72,
said she hates to see it go, but one thing that her dad always said was that
an instrument was meant to be played. Devon Wilkins.
