This issue leads off with an article on the best adventure series Mutual ever
produced: Voyage of the Scarlet Queen. This exciting series of 1947-48
combined excellent writing, superb acting, and top-notch sound effects. All
but 2 of the 36 broadcasts are in trading currency. Indefatigable researcher
Stewart Wright has discovered the original scripts of the missing episodes # 7
and 10 and summarizes them for our readers.
Are you an OTR historian, researcher, archivist, collector, or just a hoarder?
Martin Grams, Jr. sorts out this dilemma in a fascinating article entitled:
Hoarding and the Diogenes Syndrome, based upon his participation in the 2016
Radio Preservation Task Force Conference in Washington, DC. This significant
event, co-sponsored by the Library of Congress and the Library of American
Broadcasting at Univ. of MD, offered insight into all OTR archives and the
folks who inhabit them.
Most of us would probably agree that the series, Destination Freedom, was the
best African-American one on network radio. It was the creation of Richard
Durham and his recent biography by Sonja D. Williams is reviewed here by
Digester Ryan Ellett. The book, Word Warrior: Richard Dunham, Radio and
Freedom, offers fascinating details about Dunham's personal and professional
relationships. Ellett's review is followed by a mini-review of the book,
Walter Tetley: For Corn's Sake, a bio which Ben Ohmart wrote for his
publishing firm, Bear Manor Media.
Jack Benny's Lucky Strike program had two tobacco auctioneers boasting of
LSMFT and those voices were not actors; they were real tobacco auctioneers,
Speed Riggs and F. E. Boone. Author John Abbott gives us the complete story on
the background of these two famous voices. Can you guess which one was a
distant nephew of Daniel Boone?
An informative article explains the early history of Edgar Bergen in radio, TV
and film and his successes that led to his receiving the Screen Actors'
Guild Lifetime Achievement Awardb&.and why Edgar did not receive it in
person. Recently deceased OTR star Janet Waldo, the voice of Corliss Archer
and several TV characters, called this editor a liar. Find out where and why
in this August issue.
All this, plus details on all upcoming OTR conventions and festivals, letters
to the editor, and the ongoing search for a new editor. To peruse past issues
