A. Joseph Ross is right that Alfred E. Neuman appeared on his first cover in
1955 but the face without that name appeared before that usually in the
background of features. One of his monikers then was ' the What, Me Worry'
kid. From what I've found on the internet the 'What, Me Worry' line
appeared first in 1952 (in the background) so it's possible that the 'What,
Me Working' line could have been based on Mad Magazine. They gave the kid
a permanent name in 1955.

I know that Gosden and Correll employed many
black actors in the later years of Amos and Andy; did these actors do
black dialect on the show?

Some did, some didn't -- it generally depended on the social class of the
characters being portrayed. If, say, Roy Glenn was appearing as a porter
in a railroad station he would speak in a dialect -- but if he was
portraying a policeman or a business executive or other authority figure,
the role would be presented in Standard English.

This is consistent with the policy that Correll and Gosden followed
thruout the series, going back to the very beginning: dialect was used
not so much to denote race as it was to denote social class. Characters
such as the middle-class businessman Mr. Taylor (the father of Amos's
fiancee) or Lawyer Collins (who represented Andy in the famous Breach of
Promise Affair) spoke in straight standard English -- in fact, Gosden and
Correll portrayed these two characters in their own, natural speaking
voices. A character not on the social level of Mr. Taylor, but of a
higher status than Andy or the Kingfish -- Brother Crawford, for example
-- would generally speak standard English with only occasional lapses
into dialect when agitated.

An entire chapter on the use of dialect in "Amos 'n' Andy," from a
sociolinguistic point of view, appears in my upcoming book.

Re Rochester and race. I'm listening to a Live 365 OTR station and can add
something to the discussion.

The program is identified as being broadcast on 2/20/44.

Groucho and Jack are going to play checkers. Jack asks Groucho if he wants
to be black or red. Groucho says it doesn't matter; he's color blind.

As evidence he tells Jack that when he came in he handed his coat to Jack
and shook hands with Rochester.

In the case of NBC radio programs mostly in the fifties in the New York
office there was a staff of writers headed by a story editor. NBC's adult
science fiction series were mostly handled by Ernest Kinoy and George
Lefferts. Their names (especially Kinoy) also appeared often on the series
NBC Radio Playhouse also. Some were original plays others adaptations from
stories.

I was recently enjoying the March 9, 1941 issue of the Los Angeles-area
weekly radio periodical, Radio Life (which, BTW, sold then for 2 cents per
issue).
The informative magazine was published from early 1940 to late 1958,
eventually becoming TV-Radio Life.

Anyway, within that pre-WWII issue I find Buck Hathaway's "Discovery" column
with an article about ten-year-old Conrad Binyon who, among other things,
wants to marry Dinah Shore and desires to be an aviator and a comedian.
Since Mr.
Binyon frequently contributes to the Digest, I will ask him: did any of these
dreams come true, Mr. [removed]

Conrad goes on to state in the interview-style article that he started in
radio in April of 1940 when Carlton E. Morse gave him the part of Hank on One
Man's Family, and has also appeared on the Jack Benny Program, Screen Guild,
Dr.
Christian, Freedom Speaks, and Evening Herald.

BTW, Conrad, if you'd like a copy of the article (which includes a small
pix), please contact me directly (off of the Digest) and I'll have one mailed
to
you.

Good to read that Canadian rdio is doing an interview with an alumnus of
"Let's Pretend."

As a kid growing up in Queens NY during the "Let's Pretend" years, I would
occasionally send in for tickets (easy for a kid to remember: "Let's Pretend,
CBS, New York." Try THAT today!). The tix would arrive and my Dad was stuck
having to drag me by subway into Manhattan for the Saturday morning live
show.

At first I was VERY disappointed that there were no scenery or costumes; just
actors standing around microphones and reading from scripts. But they all
realized that these were KIDS in the audience, and they expected a SHOW. So
the actors gestured, and during the warmup they REALLY got us psyched.

We KNEW we were going to be heard at 11 [removed] LIVE. All over the USA. So when
Uncle Bill Adams--after a moment of dead silence and rapt
anticipation--called out: "Cream Of Wheat presents LET'S PRETEND!!" we
cheered ourselves hoarse (Dad spent the time reading the newspaper).

In the late 1960s I met Uncle Bill Adams in the Lambs Club a few times. He
had retired, but he always charmed us at Lambs events reciting poems and
doing monologues.

(Other radio actors that were Lambs at the time included Harry Hershfield,
Senator Ford, Roger Bower, Lanny Ross, Conrad Nagel--who interviewed me for
my membership--Walter Kinsella and Ed Herlihy. They were great people.)

Well, there was one episode where he was riding a rented horse named "Mendel." When
