Subject: It's an affront
Wow! In the plotlines heard in the hinterlands, Brooklyn Eagle "sounded" as
if it was mythical! Wasn't most stuff coming out of NY dramas make-believe?
In those days, I was more curiously taken with reporter Farrell's first name
than the paper he worked for. For the longest time I was convinced it was
"Front" and they just referred to him as David, a kind of nickname!

Subject: Wally Phillips
It is with sadness that I read about Wally Phillips being transferred
to that big radio station in the sky. Many years ago, more than I
wish to count, he was the cause of a car accident that I was involved
in. Although I live in Milwaukee, I listened to WGN and Wally
Phillips religiously. One day while coming home from work I was
listening to Wally, well, he made me laugh so hard that I ran a red
light and broad sided a car, luckily no one was hurt. RIP Wally.

Since I can't get to the SPERDVAC convention and I'm sure there are many on
the list who cannot get to these wonderful gatherings, is it possible to get
an address to mail Norman congrats - email or snail mail?! If not, which I
can fully understand if not, I wish to congrat Norman here if I may, on his
upcoming 98th. Thanks

Subject: Robert Arthur, The Devil and Sam Shay
The Devil and Sam Shay, written by Robert Arthur (same Arthur of THE
MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER, MURDER BY EXPERTS and THE STRANGE DR. WEIRD)wrote a
short story was originally published as Satan and Sam Shay, in the August
1942 issue of The Elks Magazine. Arthur had adapted the short story for
Buckingham Theatre in 1950, one of the most prestigious coast-to-coast
Canadian radio programs.
I am in need of a plot description for this story, so if any OTR experts or
fans of Arthur's work can fill me in, it would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: It ain't necessarily so
Some of us historiographers on this list tend to take SSDI, the Social
Security Death Index, as the "final word," or "gospel," if you please. I'm
here to say it ain't necessarily so.
While researching singer Martha Tilton (Brooks) there this week, I read that
she died Dec. 18, 2006. Numerous sources I checked provided by typical
historians, nevertheless, listed Dec. 8, 2006 as her day of death. Which
was right? The SSDI is revered so often as the last authority.
Not so, in this case (and, on several rare occasions, a few more). It turns
out The New York Times reported Ms. Tilton's passing on Dec. 13, 2006, five
days before SSDI shows it occurring! And the Times states she died Dec. 8.
Human errors creep in even in the most hallowed of places. Be forewarned.
