This Week's Classics & Curios Show:
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 112
LUM & ABNER: "GOLDEN ERA DISCUSSION CLUB - WILLIAM WORDSWORTH (LONGFELLOW?)"
As Lum calls the meeting to order at "granpap's" by asking members to
vote "by the same sign," Golden Era Discussion Club meeting number two
begins. Secretary Abner reads the minutes from the first meeting which
makes it official that the Club concluded that Beethoven was high class,
and Lum added that the level of ignorance among the citizens is on the
upswing.
The topic for the meeting on this episode is William Wordsworth's poem
"To the Cuckoo," although Lum thinks Wordsworth's last name may be
Longfellow. Lum asks each member to read a verse, beginning with Abner,
who has a problem concerning the rhyme of "heard" with "bird," claiming
the Pine Ridge pronunciation of "heerd" should rhyme with "beard" and
not "bird." This is the verse from the poem:
"O blithe Newcomer! I have heard,/I hear thee and [removed] Cuckoo!
Shall I call thee bird,/Or but a wandering voice?"
Abner's primary interest, however, is getting the checkerboard out, and
after some embarrassing "silent discussion" and "prattle prattle,"
Ulysses gives his usual stamp of approval to it all with "Okay, Okay."
Finally, Lum is only too happy to adjourn the meeting, with everybody
agreeing "by the same sign."
In view of a later episode of "Lum & Abner" devoted to birding to
impress Lum's girl friend, It would have been fun for the group to lend
similar "insights" in a discussion of another poem by Wordsworth: "Lines
Written in Early Spring," a poem with playful birds and spring flowers.
The poem extolling nature's beautiful handiwork ends with a contrast
inherent in the line "Have I not reason to lament what man has made of
man?" "Doggies!" I can almost hear Abner reading and responding to that
line with "What kind of prattle, prattle is that?"
At the third meeting of the GEDC, at the suggestion of Pine Ridge's
local professor, the subject of discussion is the philosopher Spinoza,
and host Lum declares this new topic will be "highly interesting and ...
interesting." Abner announces that he has done some research that
revealed Spinoza is a stringed musical instrument. Cedric says the same
after copying Abner's research findings. Ulysses, after not being able
to find his "specks," and claiming he "can't read left-handed," also
agrees with Abner. Frustrated, Lum abruptly declares the meeting
adjourned for refreshments of cheese and crackers, it being "meatless
Tuesday." The program ends with a highly interesting phone call to the
professor, and, all in all, ignorance has taken another significant
upswing in the community.
