From: "Louie Johnson" _ljohnson@[removed]_ (mailto:ljohnson@[removed])

A friend has asked me to find out if, during World War 2, the soap
opera "The Right To Happiness" incorporated plotlines, suggestions, or
references to the effort

Dear Louie-

I'm not a Soap expert; I've done tiny duty on Tube versions, but don't watch
them, or listen to the OTR ones.
("Callll for Jim Coxxxxx!!!")

So I can't speak about "Right to [removed]" But I can, about "Hasten
The Day!"

That one was a Sudser that SPECIFICALLY presented the WWII effort; more
specifically, the War at Home. Myself and a few members of Quicksilver Radio
Theater had the pleasure of doing a recreation of an episode at the Manhattan
"Book Debut" party for lister Howard Blue's WORDS AT WAR.

It was a decently written piece, that covered in 15 minutes the topics of
housing displacement, substitute workers, and The Terrible Call/Letter from
the

Subject: Snell again

Dear Folks;

Peace.

Help!

Roy Snell's son sent me a copy of a newspaper clipping that proves Snell
signed a contract with WMAQ to produce a 17 week continuity for Jack
Armstrong radio show. Snell was told to write three sets of continuities
using his novel, The Grey Shadow, which has a carnival theme, a naval air
base and Alaska as back drops! The writer, prior to Snell, was an army
officer who had been stationed in the Philippines, however his duties gave
him little time to continue so Snell's name was recommended.

Are there any Jack Armstrong fans in OTR land that could direct me to
locating copies of some of the shows that Snell penned.

Manituwah,

Bill

Subject: Escape/On Stage/ XM OTR
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from text/html

I have XM and I listen to their OTR channel. I like the fact that I
can tune in on any FM radio in my house at anytime. I don't have the
time or patience to download OTR. I find that when I'm doing chores or
just relaxing, rather than listen to music, I like to have OTR on in
   the background.
I especially enjoy mysteries, suspense, detective and horror shows. I
enjoy some of the comedy such as Abbott and Costello, Life with Luigi,
but I don't care for Fibber McGee and Molly, Lum and Abner, or Vic and
Sade. I like Amos 'n' Andy but I guess Radio Classics considers it to
be politically incorrect. Some other favorites include Escape,
   Suspense, and Gunsmoke.

I heard a fascinating Escape episode from 1954 in which a merchant
   seaman from Calais in France
is kidnapped and somehow mysteriously finds himself transported in a
couple of hours to Dover in England. The writer solves the mystery by
alluding to a "tunnel" underneath the English Channel.
Interesting prognostication more than 50 years before the tunnel came
   into being.

Another fascinating drama which I listened to attentively was the "On
   Stage" production of
"The Return of the Native" by Thomas Hardy produced by Fletcher
Markle. Absolutely magnificent presentation. Brings to mind a
question: Why didn't programs like "On Stage" or "Theater Guild on
the Air" do well in the ratings? Apparently, their TV counterparts of
"On Stage" and "[removed] Steel Hour" were very popular. Why didn't these
radio drama anthologies attract more support and larger audiences? It
appears that only "Lux Radio Theater" had the ratings and the
   longevity.

Subject: A couple of questions & one more about grits!
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

A couple of questions for the list:
        1. What are the dates of the OTR convention in Newark this year?
It's helpful to me (and, I'm sure, to others) to have these dates in
advance.
        2. Does anyone know of the availability of CBS Mystery Theater
on either cassette or CD? This was a 1960's series on the radio, I
believe. Edward G. Marshall was the host.
Also: One more re. grits: Use the slow cooking grits, especially stone
ground ones - if you can get them (never the instant ones, which are more
like Elmer's glue!). Cook them with more water than called for, and for
a longer time - until they are somewhat [removed] Add a chicken boullion
for every 2 cups of water you use. Add cheese, butter, and some cream or
half and half. You won't help your cholesterol level, but you will have
the kind of experience with grits that you are meant to have. I'm a
Yankee by birth, but a culinary Southern convert by good experience!

I hope suscribers of The Radio Digest will take a minute or two to write to
Robert (Don't Call Me Bob) Newman and wish him a full & speedy recovery from
his open heart surgery. Certainly the Cincinnati Old Time Radio Convention
will not be the same without his presence if he unable to attend. He has
been a powerful force for good in Old Time Radio for many years & hopefully
many years to come. Normally I would also recommend sending him an e-mail
but the last time I talked to him his computer was still in the repair shop.
  Get well soon Robert. John

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

One of the recent threads has been classic radio commercials. Here's my
chance to ask about some commercials I've been looking for!! Every time I
hear an episode of Duffy's Tavern or the Dinah Shore show, I keep thinking
that this time, they're going to do a commercial for Mum Deoderant.
Sometimes, they make mention of it, but I've never yet managed to find one.
I'm also looking for commercials for Eno, Sunlight
soap, Sweetcaps cigarettes--(may have been Canadian), White Rain shampoo,
and Smith Brothers cough drops. I'd really appreciate it if someone could
tell me where to find them. Another question I have is: were there ever any
classic commercials for either Brillo soap pads or Milko? And finally, as
president of COTRA, the Canadian Old-Time Radio Alliance, one of my dreams is
to compile a cassette or CD of classic commercials for products that were/are
made strictly in Canada. I'm wondering whether someone might be able to tell
me how to go about finding them. Thanks a bunch. Devon.
