CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 51
ALL ABOARD "THE ORANGE BLOSSOM SPECIAL"
This "Classics & Curios" show brings some great American train songs,
beginning with perhaps the most famous one, "The Orange Blossom
Special," performed here by Charlie McCoy. Probably the next most famous
train song, "The Wabash Cannonball," follows and is sung in classic
style by Country Hall of Famer Roy Acuff. One of the oldest recordings
about trains is also featured, one called "The 5:15," performed in 1915
by the versatile Billy Murray and the American Quartet. Until
microphones were used for electrical recording in the 1920's, recordings
had to be done acoustically by the use of a horn, and with Billy's
strong lungs and fast delivery his recordings were acoustically
successful and popular, many becoming best-sellers. He was talented and
versatile and even played right field in exhibition baseball games with
the Highlanders (later to become the New York Yankees). Among more
recent train recordings is Johnny Mercer's "The Atchison, Topeka, and
the Santa Fe." This song is from the 1946 movie "The Harvey Girls" and
won the academy award for best song that year. Johnny does another train
song, a cute novelty called, "My Cutie's Due at 2:22." Johnny sings it
with Bobby Darin and Billy May's orchestra. And there was a really great
train tune that hit the charts for 14 weeks in 1941-1942, and 2 of those
weeks were at number 1. That, of course, would be the hit recording by
Glenn Miller which featured Paula Kelly and the Modernaires and Tex
Beneke: "Chattanooga Choo Choo." It was a huge production number in the
1941 film "Sun Valley Serenade."
A Classics & Curios Extra is the curio recording "Civilization,"
popularly known as "Bongo, Bongo." This fun recording is from the 1947
broadway musical "Angel in the Wings" and is done by the Andrews Sisters
and Danny Kaye. It basically tells about a fellow from the Congo who is
happy right where he is and refuses to leave the quiet and peaceful
Congo for civilization's noise, false teeth, landlords, shotguns and
such, including the atom bomb. The song mentions a missionary whose
mission seems to be to convince (or "coax") the fellow to accept
civilization with its penthouses, bathtubs, taxis, golf clubs,
doorbells, and a mere two weeks vacation to swim and to fish and to
enjoy a life that the Congo man enjoys all year long. The tune was
covered by several artists, including Woody Herman, Louis Prima,
"Smilin'" Jack Smith, and Ray McKinley, but Danny and the Andrews
Sisters definitely had the most fun and success with it. The Andrews
Sisters made their mark in the late 1930's with their close harmonic
blend and with loud singing almost like harmonizing trumpets. Some big
band leaders, such as Artie Shaw, resented their style, feeling it took
focus away from the band. Some of their recordings were even smuggled
into Nazi Germany under the title "Hitler's Marching Songs." One of
those recordings, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen," was especially popular until
the Nazis discovered the composer was a Jew. It's said that the song was
secretly sung in concentration camps. These amazing gals made over 600
recordings and had 113 charted hits, 46 reaching top ten status (more
than Elvis or the Beatles).
The last train song on this edition is a great one. It's the Irving
Berlin song from 1947 "The Freedom Train" which gave some super
performers an opportunity to demonstrate their patriotism during World
War II. Contributing their talents were Johnny Mercer, Margaret Whiting,
Peggy Lee, Benny Goodman, the Pied Pipers, and the Paul Weston band. The
train toured the USA with national treasures such as the Declaration of
Independence, the Bill of Rights, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Iwo
Jima flag, the Gettysburg Address, and also even the 1215 Magna Carta.
The train made stops in 322 cities in the then existing 48 states.
President Truman supported plans of the American Heritage Foundation and
Attorney General Tom Clark for the Freedom Train to display the
foundations of our nation, such as the Bill of Rights, about which
President Truman declared, "The fundamental basis of this nation's law
was given to Moses on the Mount. The fundamental basis of our Bill of
Rights comes from the teaching we get from Exodus and St. Matthew, from
Isaiah and St. Paul. I don't think we emphasize that enough these days.
If we don't have the proper fundamental moral background, we will
finally end up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in
the right for anybody except the state."
So let's get aboard great American trains and celebrate our freedom
blessings in song!

Make Believe Ballroom Time
Episode 5
In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"

Subject: Happy WOZTW Day, Everybody!
It's probably safe to assume that any celebrations marking today's (Oct.
30th) 74th anniversary of "The Mercury Thaetre of the Air's" "The War of the
Worlds" broadcasr in the Princeton/West Windsor/Grovers' Mill area of New
Jersey have been cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath.
Regardless, I'd like to wish everybody a HAPPY 'WAR OF THE WORLDS' DAY!a
Why hasn't this hobby ever proclaimed a "NAtional Old Time Radio Day"? If it
ever came down to commemorating such on one particular day, proclaiming
October 30th, the date when the most famous OTR broadcast of them all
transpired in 1938, would be my choice -- a "no-brainer" if you will.
Yours in the ether and about four miles from Newark main thoroughfare Raymond
Boulevard (which is mentioned in WOTW),
