I have a NBC news radio show with no date. I think it from around 1939, but
am not sure. Can anyone help?

It starts of with New York switching to Fred Bates in London. Fred is not
available. His substitute says the British cabinet meeting resumed at 3:26.
There is a mention of summer foliage. The reporter says that he is a member
of an assembled volunteer fire force of 35,000

Then it switches to Paris. The correspondent says Mussolini has taken over
foreign affairs from his son in law. It talks about Parisians went to the
horse races (Transcend circuit (spelling?), but the military had taken it
over.

The the show switches to Berlin with Wallace Durow (spelling?) of the Chicago
Tribune, who talks about Germans want to be recognized as a great power and
can not have strong armies on the West and East of them.

different episode?

The date is incorrect. There were only two A&A broadcasts in this format
-- it was an experiment which didn't pan out. The first aired on December
4, the second on December 11. The programs were integrated into the
regular serial storyline by presenting them as shows put on by the lodge
as fundraisers, but the breaking-of-the-fourth-wall in the format proved
to be too much of a compromise to the serial, and when Correll and Gosden
left for their annual trip to the West Coast after the December 11
broadcast, the idea was quietly abandoned.

The programs are significant in that they marked the first time Correll
and Gosden broadcast before a live audience, and admission fees gathered
for the performances were donated to specified charities -- the proceeds
from December 4 went to the Harlem Community Fund, and those from
December 11 went to the American Lung Association.

Subject: Re: Radio Friendly? TV friendly, too!

I think that Martin Fass was being a little too cynical in his depiction of
TV program closing announcers not being as friendly or thankful as they
were back in radio. During the days of live radio they could close the
programs with a statement like "We hope YOU will be with us next Sunday at
the same time." because that would be the only time and day that the
program would be aired. This could not be done even in the early days of
live TV because even back in 1948 there would be stations airing the
program by kinescope film recording, and those might be aired at different
times and days. This was also true of syndicated radio programs (with very
few exceptions.) That's why they could only say "see ya next time." But
that doesn't make them any less friendly or less thankful for your viewing

I find that MANY TV personalities -- especially newscasters -- are still
closing their programs thanking the viewers profusely, as Martin put it,
"in a most genuine, sincere voice . . . 'THANK you for listening'" I wish
I could cite specifics, but one phrase I have heard many times, as recently
as this week, is something like" "We know that you have many choices for
news, and we thank you for choosing US."

Martin might have been right when he admitted that he might be "smitten by
nostalgia". But there is another factor -- the TYPE of programming that is
now on. Variety shows and announced sit-coms are rare now. But look at
daytime and late-night talk shows. Even some of the game shows. You will
find the host -- not the announcer -- closing the program. If you are
waiting for the announcer to give you your thanks, then you are waiting for
the wrong person.
