The first mention of the shows we commonly
call 'sitcoms' were labeled "Domestic Comedy." I can't remember when the
word
'Domestic' was replaced by 'Situation,' but I do recall that in radio, at
least, only the term 'Domestic' was used until near the very end.

I've always thought "domestic comedy" was a type of situation comedy.
"Domestic comedy" is what I've always seen referred to as any sitcom that
revolves
around a married couple and/or family. In radio, "Fibber McGee & Molly," "The
Great Gildersleeve" and "The Life of Riley" would all qualify as domestic
comedy; "Lum 'n' Abner," "Duffy's Tavern" and "Our Miss Brooks" would not.

"Amos 'n' Andy" would be a tougher call (at least the half hour shows); the
1940s version wouldn't appear to qualify as one to me, since it usually seemed
to revolve around Andy and the Kingfish, but the 1950s version (which almost
always opened with the Kingfish and Sapphire and often her mother sassing each
other and often centered around the Stephens household) would certainly
qualify. (Paging Elizabeth MacLeod to the courtesy [removed])

Dear Folks-

Well, with the weather here in NYC, the frost ain't on the punkin yet, but
Halloween IS a comin' - so here are some varied Treats:

- FOTR eeriness:
The director I most work with on Quicksilver projects, Jay Stern, will be
doing producer Arthur Anderson's "2000 +" sci-fi recreation in Newark; hope
you
can make it!
(Other scary stuff I'm honored to be a part of there includes Peter
Fernandez' SUSPENSE)

- For those brave enough to season their OTR with a bit of Contemporary
Audio:
An earlier Monstrous piece by Jay and I, and a certain Ms. Shelley, will be
offered free this month:
[removed]
(Hailed by such luminaries as Barbara Watkins, Rich Fish, and Jim Harmon!)

- Remembering the real roots of All Hallow's, a little tribute to dear
departed Hal Stone, who I will much miss sharing a mic with in Newark:
[removed]
(Scroll down for a holiday rendition of ol' Harlan's signature role!)

Happiest of Halloweens,
-Craig

Charlie North has a lot to say about what constitutes a sitcom. His
provocative and well-intended questions are answered in detail in "The Great
