Subject: Farm news no longer on WCCO Radio
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

WCCO Radio in Minneapolis had an 80-year history of providing farm news and
information to Minnesota farmers until it dropped regularly scheduled farm
reports in January of 2004. And listening to their stream on the Internet, I
see where they have also eliminated their weather forecasts for all five
states they serve in the upper midwest with only weather for Minnesota and
not
brief forecasts every hour for North and South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin --
my
home state where we as a kid we listened almost exclusively to 'CCO in my
house. Reasons for the dropped farm reports were that farmers have other
sources, such as the Internet and in surfing found that revenue was also a
big
factor as they sponsors dropped off for those reports.

However, the station still has that dear hearts and gentle people sound
(feeling) that it did back then and which is so sadly lacking in South
Florida.

Subject: Archie Andrews

In response to a Joe Mackey's quote:

1943 - A comic strip came to radio, as Archie Andrews was heard on the
Mutual Broadcasting System for the first time.

Stephen A. Kallis opined,

Well, if it comes to that, Archie Andrews wasn't the only strip. There
was Smilin' Jack, Dick Tracy, Mandrake the Magician,. and, of course,
Little Orphan Annie.

Who am I to split [removed] Archie Andrews began as a "comic Book"...(Not
a strip.) And the characters first appeared in "Pep" comic books,, before
spinning off as a separate publication. "Archie" might have morphed
eventually into a daily or weekly comic "Strip", but I don't know that for a
fact.

As to the other comic strips that became radio shows, did any of the above
mentions shows eclipse our program's 10 year run? (Grin)

Subject: Amos N Andy recreations

When I picked up my newest old radio, the GE FE-112
from 1940, I found I was able to tune the whole
shortwave band (the others had spotty SW reception).
I rediscovered the 1930s Amos N Andy recreations on
WBCQ. Everything but the commercials are recreated,
which probably didn't appear in the regular script.
Though I guess my radio isn't accurate for 1935
(they're on 1935 right now), it's close enough.

I hope that my AM transmitter will arrive this week,
so I'll be able to broadcast OTR to my radios.
