Subject: Help with ID?
I've added some pictures to my Karen Gets Hugged page, and I need the
last name of an OTR fan who we see every year at Cincy. His first name
is Meredith, and he's in picture number 18. (To get to the page, go to
[removed] then click on the Karen Gets Hugged link about
halfway down the page).
Other additions to the page include Fred Foy, Martin Grams, Chuck
Schaeden, Rodney Bowcock, Steve Jansen, Will Hutchins, Steve Thompson,
Randy Story, Jerry Randolph, and Charlie Somebody-or-other.
Not to slight the other huggees who have been there for a while: Hal
Stone, Bob Hastings, John Reynolds, Derek Tague, Jim Skyrm, Hal Sampson,
and Sonny need-his-last-name-too.
Thanks for any help! Drop me a line at dan@[removed]

Subject: Mystery of the "Unsolved Mysteries"
In reviewing my suspense oriented radio shows I just listened to a few
episodes of "Unsolved Mysteries" a 15 minute series sounding very much
like other shows from the 1930s, with music as filler while local
stations inserted commercials, and no production or cast credits. I
have been able to locate minimal information on the series:
J. David Goldin's database indicates that it was produced in 1949
[other sources list dates ranging from 1935 to 1937], and was
distributed by Kasper-Gordon Syndication. The only other Kasper-Gordon
Syndication in the database is for the undated program "Buddy Bear" (a
15 minute juvenile series) created and produced by Betty Barrie, this
is her only listing.
The only other mention I could find on the internet for Kasper-Gordon
was for a listing that Sidney Bechet and His New Orleans Rhythm Kings
recorded two tunes, Trouble in Mind and Perdido Street Stomp on June
16, 1945 at the Kasper-Gordon Studios in Boston, Massachusetts.
Any additional information about either "Unsolved Mysteries" or
"Kasper-Gordon Syndication" would be very much appreciated.

Subject: Peter Ruric on Cavalcade of America
An obscure Hollywood screenwriter named Peter Ruric (who wrote for the
BLACK MASK magazine as Paul Cain) co-wrote two radio scripts with Virginia
Radcliffe for the CAVALCADE OF AMERICA radio program. Other than these two
broadcasts, there is no known documented evidence that he wrote for any
other radio shows.
A friend of mine, Lynn, is working on a book about this screenwriter and
would like to know any information about Ruric, old-time radio related or
not, to help aid her quest. Anyone who can help drop me a line and I'll
give you her e-mail address.

Subject: Old Time Radio material
I have a stack of fliers (each flier is about 2-4 pages) for an old-time
radio program from the 1930s and 1940s that I'd like to have put up on the
internet. Problem is, my work schedule won't allow me time to type them
into the computer. I already have plenty of workload and I'd hate to pass
this on to Michelle. If anyone has plenty of free time and would like to
make some extra money, I'm willing to pay someone to type all of these into
their computer (not picky with what format - it's just getting cut and
pasted onto a web-site for OTR fans to enjoy) and e-mail the files to me
when they are done. (It's retyping fliers so it requires very little brain
power - anyone can listen to OTR shows at the same time they type these -
and get paid for it!)
Drop me a line if you have plenty of free time. I have about 250 fliers so
it'll take more than a few hours.

Subject: Mispronunciations/Andrew Sisters
Harry Machin, Jr. is 100% correct in saying that the last word in "Bei
Mir Bist Du Schoen" was pronounced in Low German. When Mr. Machlin
writes the title, he spells it correctly and must be educated in
German. I would add that its pronunciation (shane)brings to mind how
many dialects are spoken in Germany, Swizerland, and Austria. I have
heard that word pronounced that way in some dialects of German, but if
it were dialect, the first four words would have to have come out with
different pronunciations as well. My guess is that the language is
Yiddish, also a dialect of German. There were so many Jewish lyricists
that probably the one who wrote that song was Jewish, and if not, had
probably had friends who spoke Yiddish.

Two questions. Does anyone remember an OTR show on which a "psychic" (no
disrespect meant by the quotes) used his or her powers on the air? Or a
fictional version of the same?
And, when was the first call-in, live talk radio? I suspect there were
technical problems to be overcome to do such a thing, so it probably wasn't
in 1922. Is there an official date?

Here's what I want to know: how often was Abner's wife, Elizabeth, heard on
"Lum and Abner"? I actually do have one show in which she's heard shouting
his name angrily, at the end of the show in which Abner is playing a radio
"lonely hearts" advice expert. She shows up by surprise just after Abner's
said
some unflattering things about her, something that sounds remarkably like a
precursor for "The Jerry Springer Show." It's one of the half hour shows.

Subject: What Mrs. Peavey said
Since I incorrectly expressed the belief that Mrs.
Peavey (Peavy?) never actually spoke on "The Great
Gildersleeve," I felt morally obligated to track down
the program she was heard on -- and I succeeded. The
show was broadcast May 14, 1947, during the program's
sixth season. At about 1:30 [removed], Mrs. P. phoned
Gildersleeve and said, "This is Mrs. Peavey. ... I'm
sorry to disturb [removed] is Richard there? ... I don't
know what to do -- he hasn't come home. Richard's
always home by 11," a statement she repeats at least
twice more.
Later in the show, the Jolly Boys visit Mrs. P. to
express regret at Peavey's disappearance and to offer
help. She tells them there is nothing they can do and
that hanging around the Jolly Boys club "put ideas
into Richard's head." Her voice is dull, nasal, flat
and reminiscent of her spouse's.
I hope this helps. I apparently was also wrong in
my belief that Pierre Nussbaum never spoke on Fred
Allen's show, but I would have no way of tracking down
that appearance. Gee, I've apparently been incorrect
twice in two tries. Well, at least I'm consistent.

Program 8: November, 1970
William Spier was the Director of "Suspense" and "Sam

motion picture actress who performed in such films as
"Four Jacks and a Jill," "My Sister Eileen," and
"Gentlemen's Agreement."
Program 9: December, 1970
Richard Dana wa a free lance writer of shows such as
"We, the People," "Your Hit Parade," and "Exploring the
Unknown" and broadcast program supervisor at
Young and Rubicam.
In the 1970's Dick Bertel created the program for
WTIC in Hartford, CT. The idea came to Dick
after he interviewed radio collector-historian Ed
Corcoran a few times. It was first broadcast in April,
1970; Ed was his co-host.
For the next seven years the program featured interviews
with radio actors, writers, producers, engineers and
musicians from radio's early days. In addition, each
show featured excerpts from Ed's collection.

Subject: OTR Shows involving Postal Inspectors
My company is producing a film on the history of the United States
Postal Inspection Service, America's oldest federal law enforcement
agency.
As part of that effort, I'm attempting to include clips from movies, TV
shows,
and of course, radio that featured Postal Inspectors.
To date, I've been able to locate an audition show for a program called
"United States Postal Inspector" and also three "Lum and Abner" episodes
from January of 1940, where Lum is arrested for operating an illegal
post office.
If any list members are aware of other radio programs that featured
Postal Inspectors as part of their plot, I'd love to hear about them. Please
note that we're not interested in shows related to the Post Office, Pony
Express or even mail crimes, unless they mention Postal Inspectors
by name.
Any and all help would be appreciated. In fact, we'll include you in the
credits and provide a free copy of the DVD when the project
is complete.
