CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 38
Eddie Hubbard's Musical Novelty Night
It's novelty song night on Eddie Hubbard's radio show from 1988. What is
a novelty song, anyway? Basically, I suppose, most will agree that a
novelty song is designed for comic effect like "Mairzy Doats" or "Who
Threw the Overalls in Mrs. Murphy's Chowder" or Fats Waller's "Your
Feet's Too Big." But a novelty song also may embrace music not composed
intrinsically as funny but performed (often also with lyrics changed)
for comic or playful effect like several of Homer and Jethro recordings.
As hard as we might try it's not easy to forget their "Let Me Go,
Blubber"? Of course, the things that made most novelty songs
intentionally novel around the big band era were songs that for the most
part contrasted with mainline popular melodies and/or had lyrics that
were fun or even were parodies like "In der Fuehrer's Face." The 1950's
saw curios like, "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window" which had both
a fun tune and fun lyrics. Country music has a multitude of fun and
silly curios such as "You're the Reason Our Kids Are So Ugly." As time
went on, and rock and roll ruled the airways, a trend began toward
"novelty" as the norm. The 1960's gave us fun doo wop groups like Wayne
Fontana and the Mindbenders singing "The Game of Love" and songs like
the "unforgettable" "Ally Oop" by the Hollywood Argyles. As more time
passed it gradually seemed to become virtually impossible to distinguish
between what is "normal" and what is novel, at least to this codger's
taste, and today "amplified weirdness" almost seems the norm. But that's
for musicologists to address. Thank the Lord, Eddie and Hubbard's
Clubbers can still share a love for classic and clearly curio vintage
music. On this show Eddie plays classic songs like "Pennies from
Heaven," "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans," and "I Love Paris" which are
straight tin pan alley popular songs, but we'll hear them performed for
comic or joyful or satirical effect as novelties. Eddie also plays songs
that were intentionally written as novelties such as the 1950's "The
Thing" and the 1940's "Caldonia." In addition, we'll hear the song "Is
You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?" which might be categorized as very
normal "hot jazz" speech among black performers and still today is
wonderful lighthearted and delightful jazz. Jo Stafford performs as her
alter-ego performer, Darlene Edwards, as she sings the beautiful "I Love
Paris" off key, which is a satire of a not so talented lounge singer in
1960 and even anticipates many later amateur karaoke performers. Jo, by
the way, also performed as Cinderella G. Stump with a hit song
"Tim-Tay-Shun" in 1947 to parody vintage stereotypical country singers.
Jo was truly a classy Christian lady and classic performer who could
sing timeless big band tunes as well as any vocalist. Other performers
on this show include Les Brown and Doris Day, Fats Waller, Jimmy Dorsey,
Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong, Woody Herman, Harry Babbitt, Louis
Prima and Keely Smith, Phil Harris, Louis Jourdan, and Perry Como. Eddie
adds an extra tune or two such as Frank Sinatra's "Softly As I Leave
You," and for history buffs a news cast concerning the unsuccessful
Panama Coup of 1988 closes the show. Whatever the music style or our age
may be, as Jo Stafford might share from scripture, "Be joyful in hope,
patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer," just as she was until
her death in 2008. Her bio and a limited number of vinyl LP and CD
recordings reflecting her amazing talent, steadfast faith, joyful hope,
and abiding love are available at online sources, along with wonderful
recordings she made with the Pied Pipers and Tommy Dorsey. Now let's
enjoy Eddie and his Musical Novelty Night.
Our thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting original Browsers
studio tapes for high quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time
Episode 3
It's Make Believe Ballroom Time is in Chicago for this episode. We are
telling the story of Cleo Brown, stride pianist and vocalist, who had a
very limited recording history but a wonderful lifetime of music
performances. She reached National acclaim. Then were telling the story
of the United States in the mid-1930's with facts and statistics. Later
we pass on the history of the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago and listen to
the Ted Weems Orchestra broadcasting live from there with his great
vocalist Perry Como and his whistler Elmo Tanner. Another remote
broadcast of the Dich Jergends Orchestra.
