Subject: Danny Kaye on the Nostalgia Digest Podcast
I thought the group might like to know that the Nostalgia Digest Podcast for
March features a conversation with David Koenig, author of "Danny Kaye: King
of
Jesters," an entertaining book that includes an extensive chapter about Kaye's
radio work. The Podcast also includes an episode of the Danny Kaye Show from
1945. You can download the Nostalgia Digest Podcast at iTunes or by going to

Subject: Sad anniversary
March 5th marks the 50th anniversary of the death of four Grand Ole
Opry stars in a plane crash near Camden, Tenn.: Patsy Cline, Hawkshaw
Hawkins, Cowboy Copas and Randy Hughes.
Though at the time, "Hawk" and "Cope" were actually the bigger stars,
it is Cline who has assumed iconic proportions, ever since the movie
"Sweet Dreams" with Jessica Lange. Patsy has had a [removed] postage stamp
minted in her honor, was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame, has had theatrical productions mounted which immortalize her
life, and is the standard of comparison for female singers across a
broad spectrum of music lovers.
I thought maybe readers of the OTR Digest, of which I have been a
subscriber for many years, might be interested in a new CD called
"The Divine Ms. Cline." It includes 6 previously unreleased
performances she did for some military transcription shows, including
a series called "Take 5." While such recruiting shows as "Country
Style USA" and "Navy Hoedown" seem to be better known, for some
reason "Take 5" has been largely overlooked. The quality of this
material is outstanding. Included on the CD is Patsy's radio
performance of "Tennessee Waltz"- a song she never recorded for
Decca. A bad copy of this has garnered over [removed] million views on
YouTube in the past five years, but our version is a far superior
audio restoration, coupled with strings, and even a five-piece
trombone section!
As some of you know, I formed an indie label in 2002 called
VoiceMasters, when I began putting out CDs featuring segments from
Jim's long-lost ABN show, which he did daily coast-to-coast, for six
months starting in the fall of 1957. Over the years, my releases have
evolved to include studio tracks, demos and radio performances, which
I have overdubbed, using top musicians, singers and orchestrators.
Fans love these new sounds, and one of these tracks on Jim made it to
#7 on radio playlists all across Europe, where it remained for seven
weeks in 2009!
I've taken the same approach with the new Patsy CD. Her voice is
timeless but the original arrangements were not. They sound very
dated. Also, the accompaniment and background singers sometimes
covered her up! So we have gotten rid of all that and started fresh.
The sound quality is stunning. I've even used musicians from the
CURRENT Grand Ole Opry band whom -- as you know -- play on one of the
oldest continuously broadcast radio programs (dating back to 1925).
There have been other overdubs on some of Patsy Cline's music in the
past, but they have generally been dreadful. On this new CD, you can
hear her better than ever before. The radio material is priceless,
and you can hear just how great she was "in concert." You can listen

In V2013 #25, Trent Clifton asked for info about Elaine Hyman,
who -- he said -- was a child actor on "The Lone Ranger", "The Green
Hornet", and "Sergeant Preston". Just a quick Google brings up a lot of
websites containing info about people named "Elaine Hyman", one of whom
is an attorney. There are numerous references to an actress by that
name, though, and I'm assuming that they are all the same persona.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
According to various OTR reference books, the theme music to Frank Sinatra's
short-lived quasi-detective show "Rocky Fortune" is an instrumental called
"Puffing Willy." Might this title be a reference to Kool Cigarettes (The
"puffing" part) and the product's cartoon penguin mascot named "Willie"?
