Subject: 1941

Ed's [removed] were no satellites or other
high-tech gizmos in December 1941, but it would be a
mistake to believe the technological capabilities of
the day were so rudimentary that they prohibited quick
response to news events.

If nothing else, photographs for newspapers could be telephoned back to the
mainland. The Wirephoto technology was well established by 1935. But I
think it took a day or so to get the first pictures back; I don't know for
sure.

NBC had Honolulu up and on the air barely
90-minutes after the attack, for example. But for
some reason, as we've discussed here before, the
nets--and particularly NBC--simply *didn't* go
wall-to-wall once the immediate crisis had passed.

snip

I didn't think that _any_ network went 'wall-to-wall' about anything until
JFK's death in 1963. I know that there were several lengthy news reports
during WWII, but it sure wasn't like CNN. I think the attitude was that
anyone who wanted news in depth would go to the most popular news medium of
the day--the newspapers. Nowadays, when we want to hear details of a
breaking news event, we turn on the radio or TV. In 1941, the newsboys went
out with an 'extra' edition.

Radio stations had a responsibility to their sponsors, and I believe that
they seldom cut advertisements. There was, in fact, quite a bit of
discussion when this was done after 9/11/01.

"My name is Isaac Davidson and I lived in the Polish city of Lublin with my
wife, Dvora, and Samuel, our son. When Poland fell, they herded us into a
cattle car and transported us to the Ghetto of Warsaw. It was a place in
Purgatory and around that Purgatory they had built a brick [removed] and
another wall of
barbed [removed] and beyond the wire stood a third [removed] of soldiers armed
with bayonets."

April 1943: In the Ghetto, thirty-five thousand stood their ground against
an army of the Third Reich - and twenty-five thousand fell.

In observance of the 61st anniversary of the battle of the Warsaw Ghetto, the
Gotham Radio Players are privileged to present a recreation of Morton
Wishengrad's classic and touching radio play. Join us for our live broadcast
this
Sunday, April 18th, at 7pm (eastern) on WBAI, [removed] FM in New York City, or

The Gotham Radio Players were formed in 1991 by a group of enthusiasts for
the heyday of radio drama. Our mission is to bring new productions of classic
radio programs of the 30's, 40's, and 50's to the airwaves of the new
millennium, as well as showcase original scripts written by the emerging audio
dramatists of today. Now under the leadership of producer Max Schmid and
director
Steven Lewis, the Gotham Radio Players are featured regularly in live
performances
on WBAI-FM, at the annual "Friends of Old-Time Radio" Convention, and at
other personal appearances in the New York City metropolitan area.

Subject: Two big Benny announcements!

Hello again,

---ANNOUNCEMENT 1--- VOLUME 1 OF REVISED JACK BENNY LOG AVAILABLE!

After hundreds of hours of work, I am very excited to announce that the first
volume of my revised Jack Benny media log is now available!

39 Forever was originally released in 1989, and included Jack's radio and
television shows, appearances, and specials, movies, books, magazine articles,
and discography. Due to the level of detail involved in this revision, it
will
be released in multiple volumes over the coming years.

Who were the first guest stars on the Benny program?
When was the very first mention of a feud between Jack and Fred Allen?
When did Jack first play Love in Bloom on the air?
What character names did Eddie Anderson play besides Rochester?
When did Phil Harris first call Jack "Jackson" and why?

The answers to all these questions and much, much more lie in the pages of 39
Forever, Second Edition.

Volume 1 covers Jack's regular radio programs from his debut for Canada Dry
in May of 1932 through the end of the Jell-O series in May of 1942, almost
exactly half of Jack's total regular radio broadcasts. Please see
[removed] for a sample show listing. Full indexes of cast members,
cities, musical
artists, skits, and songs are also included.

This volume contains 520 pages of detailed information, and is truly a
priceless resource for any Benny fan, and anyone looking to understand more
about
how the program went from its debut to the top of the ratings.

39 Forever, Second Edition - Volume 1 is available for $[removed], and will be
sent to you via Media Mail within the United States (surface mail outside the
US). Paypal users can make payment to jackbenny@[removed]. Make checks payable
to
IJBFC, and send to:

[removed] Box 11288

Note: I will be ordering the initial print run based on the level of
response, so please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.

---ANNOUNCEMENT 2--- IJBFC STARTS VIDEO LIBRARY!

After decades of requests, the IJBFC is ready to start its video library.
Jack Benny's work in television and movies has often been extremely elusive,
and
we hope to be able to make this material more readily available for our
members to discover and enjoy. We plan on offering a variety of Jack Benny
titles,
and continuously expanding our listing through the help of the IJBFC
membership.

These titles will be available on DVD only. Please see the video library
link under Featured Items on [removed] for full details and current
offerings.

Subject: nation was under attack.

Bob Watson wrote:

Not only the Benny show, but just about all the comedy and variety shows of
that evening are pretty standard. If it wasn't for the bulletins
interrupting, you sometimes wouldn't have been able tell that the nation was
under attack.

I wonder if that reaction might have had something to do with the site of
the attack: Hawaii, an island chain way out in the ocean; some kind of
possession of the US; whose capital, "O-HA-U", couldn't even be pronounced
correctly by a network newscaster.
Does anybody know if there was any criticism of those shows/stars whose
programs didn't mention the new war situation on December 7th?

"Don't you know there's a war on?"

Subject: I don't get [removed]

I was listening to a Halls of Ivy episode yesterday - it would have been the
first or second episode of the series. In it, Dr. Hall was describing his
own undergraduate days at Ivy to Victoria. He describes driving around in a
purple Stutz Bearcat, and wearing a yellow slicker with witty sayings all
over it like "banana oil". The banana oil line gets a big laugh from the
audience, but I don't get the joke. Can someone help a young whippersnapper
out?

Thanks,
