It seems in a Hope momologue, Hope asked, "What is a fisherman's
delight?" "One night on Veronica Lake." Hope's lawyers had to
search world maps to find a lake named Veronica to prevent a
lawsuit.
Funny, but there was a lake called "Veronica Lake" in Rocky and
Bullwinkle cartoons. Moosylvania was said to be on the Isle of Lucy
(say it fast), in the middle of Veronica Lake. It was also said to
be the only territory in dispute between the US and Canada. We say
it's theirs, and they say it's ours!

Here is an interesting article about Mel Shavelson. He talks about
being a writer for the Bob Hope radio show:
"Hope always made it clear who was boss. Once a week, on payday, the
writers would show up at Hope's house, which had a circular stairway
leading to his upstairs office. Hope would stand out on the balcony,
fashion the paychecks into paper airplanes and toss them down."

Subject: Bob Hope
In 1966 I saw a typical Bob Hope military show at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in
Saigon.
It ran for about two hours, and it included a segment of humor specifically
directed to the events and foibles of the Base ("in" jokes, ribbing ranking
officers, etc.). This was fun to watch because I was a member of the 7th Air
Force's Public Affairs Office who was asked months before to supply the Hope
people with humorous ideas and suggestions. We brainstormed and I felt like
a member of a comedy writers' meeting for a radio show!
Anyway, I do not recall ANY over the top sexual joke by Bob Hope in his two
hours. Racy and suggestive, yes, but definitely never offensive. (Damn!)

Subject: Morgan Watkins' query re 'Reunion'
Perhaps somewhat off-topic, but to answer Morgan Watkins' request, [removed] -
Does anyone know where one could purchase a collection of an old radio
show, "Reunion"? It is a show, starting around 1948, where Holocaust
survivors are reunited with their families? I heard a segment from the
"Yiddish Radio Project" services that was on NPR and was fascinated. Any
pointers . . . appreciated.
My wife and I recently finished reading 'The Shadow Man' (in German, 'Der
Schattenmann'). A finely crafted, mesmerizing mystery, it contains a
fascinating wealth of information about the Holocaust, its survivors and
victims. You will not want to put it down as you experience what it was like
on those trains and their ultimate destinations. Written by John Katzenbach,
author of 'Just Cause'.
For those interested in the Holocaust and its aftermath, we also recommend a
video called 'Paperclips' about what school children in heartland America
have done and are doing to educate themselves and millions of others about
that horrific time in recent history.
I just looked them up - there are numerous copies of book and video now
selling on eBay and other online sources. Usual disclaimers apply - a great
read on one hand and engrossing video on the other.

Greetings, gates.
As my much neede Summer break rolls around, I am in need of OTR materials for
various projects I plan to complete this "vacation" period.
I am looking for the following items: 1) inexpensive back issues of NOSTALGIA
DIGEST; 2) a good reference work concerning BOB & RAY and their careers; and
3) recordings of newscasts(and/or newspaper reproductions) regarding the
events following the infamous WAR OF THE WORLDS broadcast in 1938.
I can't reveal as yet why I need these things, but any educators on this
digest who use OTR in the classroom could/ might have a solid, new resource
within the coming year. I [removed]
Finally, I am still hoping to attend the REPS Convention this June and was
wondering if anyone has information/ stories to share on or offline about that
annual meeting. Furthermore, I am trying to save on costs(I know it shocks all
of you to know that an educator is not in the big bucks) and hoping that
someone might be willing to share travel costs, room, [removed]
As usual, any information will be helpful and deeply appreciated.
Best,
Randy Story
West Plains, MO
(where I hope to be announcing a first-ever OTR Convention for Summer, 2008!)

Subject: Cincy Con and hotels
Yes, the hotel had issues at Cincy, but honestly, those are what I would
refer to as "isolated incidents." Stephen Jansen took pictures of his room
and he and I forwarded them to Charlie to see the hilarious scenes of a
hotel going down hill. My room had no flaws at all, so Stephen and his
sister Lora had the one room that must have been left over from a stag
party. A few people had a complaint or two, but they were very minor and
MOST people did not have a complaint. If one person has a bad time at a
hotel or motel, revisiting the same place again doesn't guarentee a bad time
a second time.
Dan Hughes hit the nail on the head when it came to the reason why. The
hotel had been purchased and will be under new ownership by next year's
convention. Whenever a hotel chain is purchased by another, the
present/previous owner won't put up much expenses on maintenance for the
obvious reason: why? It's not their hotel anymore. That's the job of the
new owners when they move in.
Next year I have no doubt the hotel will be better run and nicer looking.
Still, the hotel was not that bad. I've been to hotels that were so
horrible that I can't help by cry with laughter and wish I had a digital
camera and wondered if the people who put on their convention wasn't
embarrassed.
Having walked on the same side of the tighrope, I can say that it's not Bob
Burchett's fault. And thankfully no one is throwing the blame on him. It
was the hotel's fault. Anyone can book a convention or meeting in a hotel
and six months later, when everyone arrives, the hotel is in a sorry state
of condition than it was six months before. This can happen.
Most people do not know this, and I'll let it on now as it's VERY important:
but anyone who wants to put on a convention at a hotel generally has two
options. One, pay a flat rental rate (fee) for the use of the rooms which
is expensive or Two, pay a smaller rental rate (fee) and guarantee the hotel
for a number of room bookings.
Example: Holding a convention in one big ballroom at a hotel costs $4,000
for the weekend. But if the person who puts on the convention guarantees a
minimum of 150 rooms booked, the rental rate is $[removed] - but if 150 rooms
is not booked, the price is $5,000.
Most people who put on a convention prefer to go the second route. Which is
why at Newark's FOTR convention and other conventions I've been at, fliers
specifically state "mention FOTR when booking your room" or "discount room
price if you tell them you're coming in for the convention." If you are
attending a convention, please consider choosing the hotel it's being held
at. The people who run those conventions need the support. Imagine in 90%
of the attendees next year at Cincy decide to book their room across the
street at the motel. ("Wow! Instead of paying $[removed] a night I now pay
$[removed]!) The scenario would mean the operators of the conventions would
have a devil of a time paying for the convention, and ths risk not having
any more in the future. Just something to consider when attending
conventions.
It reminds me, in closing, of the female attendee at a convention in
Southern Jersey. She was complaining that the hotel where the convention
was held, and how it was run down and all she did was complain. If it
wasn't the missing ceiling tiles, it was the lack of complimentaries in her
room. Of course, when I mentioned the convention in NYC I once attended and
I recalled seeing her there, and how that hotel was dust-free (it was that
nicely run), she complained about the $[removed] per night hotel room and
wouldn't stop complaining. Moral of the story: if you want superb service
and quality comfort, it's going to cost. If you prefer economics, then we
have to laugh and forget all about the holes in the walls. Me, I prefer the
laugh - even when Stephen Jansen (ala The Bone Collector) photographed a
dollar bill alongside the mold on the shower curtain for size comparison.
That's too funny. It rocks. And I'll be at the same hotel in Cincy next
year.
Martin
