performers could've asked for. I hope you'll tune in to hear him on June 20 or
June 27 (or both) as he wraps up his long and marvelous career.
And of course, I hope you'll tune in to "Those Were The Days" on July 4 and
every Saturday thereafter as yours truly assumes the role of [removed]

Joe, are you thinking of Exploring Tomorrow? That was the series in
which John Campbell Jr. is heard hosting the series. Even on that, he
was also a technical consultant as he provided stories to the writers
for adaptation, but he also, in the case of ET spoke as "host."
OK, that's the one. Sorry.
John W. Campbell, Jr. was the editor of Astounding Science Fiction
magazine starting in 1937 and remained editor until he died in 1971
(the name was changed to "Analog" in 1960). The magazine was usually
the leading magazine in the field, and he discovered and mentored
some of the greatest science fiction writers of the day, including
Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov. Asimov freely admitted that his
Laws of Robotics were first formulated by Campbell, but Campbell
insisted that he found them implicit in Asimov's first robot story.
I had the pleasure of meeting Campbell on several occasions in the
1960s, and I found him a fascinating man. To this day, if you pick up
a copy of Analog magazine, you will very likely find, somewhere, a
mention of Campbell. The publishers of Analog sponsor the John W.
Campbell Award for the most promising new writer of the year, given
annually at the World Science Fiction Convention. It is usually
presented by Stanley Schmidt, the current editor.
Campbell also co-founded Dianetics/Scientology with L. Ron Hubbard,
but withdrew after a short time.
