Subject: PHIL HARPER
I was saddened to hear about Phil Harper's passing. Even though I only met
him personally once backstage at one of the rehearsals for Imagination
Theater, he impressed me as a very down to earth and very approachable
person in that one meeting. Speaking to Pat French today, she expressed how
condolances via email are continiously pouring in. Jim & Pat have worked
with Mr. Harper for 20 years or more. Even though Harry Nile will continue
as the replacement Actor for the character will be announced in the not too
distant future, Mr. Harper's unigue voice and talent will be sorely missed,
as well as the man himself by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Subject: Re: Barry Hill
Barry Hill's passing comes as a shock to me. When I
was preparing to move to Belpre, Ohio, two and one
half years ago, I remembered vaguely that one of the
dealers I'd had the pleasure of meeting at the
Cincinnati Convention, and buying a set of "Suspense"
tapes from, was from Belpre. So quickly I looked up
the business cards I'd received, and sure enough:
Barry Hill, Belpre. I gave him a call and told him
who I was. He commented that he never forgot a face
and when I got to Belpre to look him up, and he would
surely remember me. We agreed then that we would get
together. We never did.
Like so many other good intentions, the demands and
routines of life distracted me from that intended
meeting. Seems kind of funny now, we lived but a few
miles from one another (less than five), yet it was in
Cincinnati, 180 miles away, that we would run into
each other again.
Barry was one of the first dealers I ever bought from.
I was impressed with his British accent. He was
always a joy to talk with, and to discuss OTR with. I
can't say I really knew Barry, but I always made it a
point to visit his table, if no other, at the OTR
convention, not only to purchase more tapes, but
because he was simply an enjoyable chat, a little
rough around the edges perhaps, but very much down to
earth, and a heart good as good.
Ironically, just a little over a week ago I was
driving down Rt. 7 into Belpre and there was Barry in
the next car. I wanted to wave and honk, but realized
he would have no idea who I was. I remembered him
saying that he never forgot a face, but at 50 MPH with
the setting sun shining in our faces, I'm sure he and
his wife would probably have thought I was just some
crazed driver carrying on about something, and to be
avoided at all costs.
Now more than ever,I regret not ever taking the time
to make that phone call to say, "Hey, Barry, this is
Dave [removed] your new [removed] how about lunch
this week?"
If anyone wishes to extend condolences or to send
flowers, the services for Barry are being held at the
Leavitts Funeral Home in Belpre, 2pm on Monday October
17.
God's Blessings to you, Barry.

Trina asked about "All Hallow's Eve." Video Yesteryear (the same company
also known as Radio Yesteryear and Radiola that got bought out a few years
ago) was responsible for releasing a video print of the SUSPENSE television
episode. That drama was NEVER dramatized on radio's SUSPENSE. What you
heard was an audio recording of the television drama. There are a few
dealers who sell (some of them are out of business) and specialize in
selling audio recordings of old television shows. Sadly, the audio
recordings of the television broadcasts slip into radio collector's catalogs
and as a result are mistaken as a radio broadcast. For info about the radio
AND television series SUSPENSE, check out the 460 page book, SUSPENSE:
TWENTY YEARS OF THRILLS AND CHILLS. It's out of print now but [removed]
often has a copy available from someone selling their copy.

I had the great pleasure of knowing Barry for many years (must be close
to 20 years), both in England and the [removed] We typically only saw each
other at OTR conventions, but, in recent years, we emailed regularly.
He was warm, funny, thoughtful, and very bright.
He never forgot a friend -- he knew of my passion for certain BBC shows
and would pop copies in the mail to me -- unannounced -- whenever he
found new episodes. In return, I would do the same to him. For a
while, it seemed like a contest to see who could give the other more shows.
Barry will be missed, but not forgotten, by his many, many friends in
OTR. The Friends of OTR convention in New Jersey next week won't be the
same this year (or future years) without him.

Subject: A Casting delimna
Jazzman, in talking about the upcoming episode of Duffy's tavern at this
years SPERDVAC Convention, had this to say in response to my posting about
the role of "Eddie the waiter"
Not to worry Jazmaan. I might even play that part myself. Is it [removed] if
Eddie sounds like "Jughead"? :)
Well, not to step on your casting toes, but since you asked - - wouldn't
"Jughead" be better suited to playing "Finnigan?"
Jazzman, to quote [removed] "Stay offa my blue suede casting shoes". :)
Sheese! Now I recall why I retired from Directing when I was still young and
pretty. Everybody want's to get into the act. :)
But seriously, Jazzy. I am blessed with such a multiplicity of talented
people that I have changed my mind and will not play all the roles.
But the casting of "Finnigan" and "Eddie the Waiter" will have to remain a
surprise. I don't know when I've been so blessed with such a stellar cast.
See you in LA.

Gang-
Just wanted to add my belated words of sympathy to Barry's friends & family.
Though I'm not that big a Brit Drama fan, talking to him was always one of
the real joys of FOTR.
He'll be much missed - and I expect, much present in Spirit - this week.
Sincerely,
-Craig Wichman

Subject: All Hallow's Eve
Trina asked
I had a question about an episode of Suspense titled "All Hallow's Eve." I
heard this on a web site in 2000. I don't have the suspense air date,
but I think it aired in October in the 1950s. I tried to look for the
airdate myself and I didn't have any luck. I only came across the TV Series
Suspense air date that is listed as October 1953. My question is are there
two versions "All Hollow's Eve"? One made for TV and the other for radio?
I searched several logs of the Suspense radio series and found no
listing for an episode titled "All Hallow's Eve". The only reference to
that title and Suspense is for the television program. This episode,
starring Franchot Tone, is available on videotape. I suspect that some
less than honorable person posted the soundtrack of the TV show to his
web site claiming it was from the radio series.

Hi Gang:
There's really not much I can add but a heartfelt "Here! Here!" to everybody
who has already posted
kind words about our dearly departed friend Barry Hill. I very much would
like to echo a Digest-wide
appreciation for the tributes that have appeared in this space from the
vanguard of the OTR hobby,
Miss Sunday-Watkins and Messrs. Summers, Grams, Biel, Siegel, Berney, Widner,
and Hickerson.
I remember when Barry obtained US citizenship several years ago , he was
proudly showing off his newly
acquired "green" card to all the folks who stopped by his dealer's table at
FOTR. When he showed it me,
my reaction [removed] "Barrington?"
Who knew?
The thing I'll miss most about Barry is, without a doubt, the jokes! Some were
a bit off-colour; most were
politically incorrect. But I have found that in this day and age where the art
of joke-telling is frowned upon
lest somebody be offended, that there it was encouraging that theer was
someone like Barry Hill keeping
it alive.
On a personal note, there's been a slight change of plans regarding Prof. Mike
Biel's segment on Walden
Hughes Sunday night show on Yesterday USA. I was originally scheduled to
appear with Walden and Mike
to talk about the panels I shall be hosting at next week's FOTR. However,
since Prof. B. wishes to devote a
good chunk of the show to memories of Barry Hill, Martin Grams, Jr., a very
good friend of Barrington's
will be on in my stead. Martin knew BH netter than I did, and all parties
involved have agreed that
Martin would be a better person to reminisce about Barry than I can.
However, you all are not getting rid of me so soon. I'm supposed to be on with
Walden this Saturday 10/16
at 10:30 PM/Eastern. It's going to be my satellite-radio debut and I'm
excited. I just hope Walden doesn't
throw me a curveball question at the $16,[removed] level.
Peace, Barry.
