Perhaps a good general question is: Tell us your most memorable moment (or
memory), or funniest, scariest, finest ...or your earliest memory of being
an OTR performer. This last especially for someone who started in the biz as
a child.

Before anyone dashes out to buy a laser turntable to play transcriptions on,
I would have to interject a few warnings.
I'm not sure what would characterize a "perfect" turntable, but the ELP
would not be it. the ELP won't play anything but black records - so forget
uncoated aluminum or white or red or blue or green ETs. Also, with an ELP I
do not believe there is a way to center an off-center record, or do a wet
transfer (which I prefer to avoid in most instances anyway).

Hiroshima bomb plane's co-pilot
A radio station is interested in a taped interview that I did of the
co-pilot of the Enola Gay which dropped THE bomb in August 1945. I would
like to get the tape cleaned up a bit, meaning improve the sound. Can
anyone refer me to a place (preferably on Long Island) where I can have
this done? The yellow pages don't help.
Thanks,

Dear OTR Members,
I once read that Orson Wells stated " Mercedes McCambridge was the best
radio actress in the world". I know she was featured in countless programs
but, is there anywhere that a retrospective or collection of her radio work
can be purchased? I thought that the great minds of OTR could help.
The more I listen to her work the more I want to.

Several people have inquired about the Chicken Heart episode. I wanted to
pass along another occasion for the show being mentioned.
There is a comedy skit by Bill Cosby that includes an adaptation of the
Chicken Heart "who ate New York City". It appears on an album titled
"Wonderfulness: The Amazing Comedy of Bill Cosby", Warner Brothers # W-1634
(mono LP album). All vocalizations are by Bill Cosby, there is no actual
recording of the program in the background. Perhaps Mr. Cosby has a copy of
the original script or a recording of the original show, used for his
purposes at the time. The Cosby album dates from the mid 60's. The LP has
been reissued as a CD and is available today.

The programs on BBC4's web pages are available for listening in Real
Audio for the entire week following the show, so don't worry about
trying to figure out what time it is on in your time zone, or setting
the alarm clock for some crazy hour. Just log in and listen. And, if
you have a program like Total Recorder, you can capture and save it.

I wonder if
any oil man out there named any of his wells Orson?
Michael Biel whimsically wonders at the usage of OTR names in everyday li
fe and it reminded me of the story told by Gene Fowler in his excellent book,
"Minutes of the Last Meeting" written in the 40s where he spins many a fine
anecdote about his observations and time spent at the art studio of John
Decker, a painter and raconteur who lived in Westwood California in the 30'
and 40s.
Decker's friends in those days were [removed] Fields, who was known as Uncle
Bill, John Carradine, who would fall by and recite poetry well into the
night, Sadakichi Hartmann, a poet and madman much beloved of all and a rag
tag collection of the unique souls then ensconced in and around Hollywood.
The list included a young actor named Anthony Quinn who came by almost
every Sunday night he once told me, just to run into John Barrymore and spend
time with his idol.
One Sunday afternoon, Barrymore, usually recovering or well into his
cups at that time in the early 40's was snoozing in his favorite red plush
throne-like chair in the center of the room when the talk turned to the new
young wunderkind at RKO who had just arrived in town some months before,
Orson Welles.
Soon it was Orson Welles this and Orson Welles that and the talk got
heated waking the great Barrymore from his slumber.
Both Fowler and Tony Quinn recall that upon starting awake, Barrymore
roared in a thunderous timbre,
"Orson Welles?"
The group grew silent.
"Where's that?"

Subject: Dates for Jack Benny Shows
In OTR Digest #126 there were 2 requests for dates of shows with Jack Benny.
Sean Dougherty asked the date of a "Mail Call" with Jack, Ann Sheridan and
the King's Men. This is "Mail Call" #3 dated 27 August 1942 in which Rosemary
Lane also appeared. This information is taken from Harry Mackenzie's book
entitled "Command Performance USA!" as I don't have a copy of that edition of
"Mail Call".
The Jack Benny TV Show with Raymond Burr is nearly 20 years later and was
televised on 5 November 1961. That was the date I was given when I obtained a
copy of the programme (that's how we spell the word here in England).

Subject: Prof. Biel's response
Hi Gang:
I want to personally thank Mike Biel for his response about OTR-place
names; being quite familiar with Newark, NJ, I can assure everybody out there
that the main thoroughfare "Raymond Boulevard," forever immortalized with its
passing reference in WOTW, was neither named for "Your Host, Raymond,"
"Raymond Burr," or any other OTR-connected "Raymond." It's named after a quite
popular politician with the last name of "Raymond" [I think his first name was
"Thomas," but don't quote me] who served as mayor of Newark around the turn of
the 20th century.
And speaking of oil wells named "Orson," here, again, is one of my
favourite self-written jokes [Garrison Keillor hated it when I met him &
attempted to share it with him]: Sun MicroSystems merged with Wells Fargo
and were then bought out by Ore-Ida French [er, excuse me, "Freedom"]
[removed] the new company to change its name to "Ore-Sun-Wells."
Hoping to see Prof. Biel, his lovely daughter Leah, and all you other
ether-ites next month in Cincinnati!
Yours--
Derek Tague

I offered them cassettes of Wild Bill Hickok and his first time on Jack

They were deeply moved. As to "Theatre of the Mind" I am betting it came

show. By the way, I replied to the original inquirer about Rye Billsbury

WFUV's Classic Radio program that aired March 24, 2003 at Midnight included
a "Mail Call" episode with Jack Benny and Anne Sheridan plugging "George
Washington Slept Here," and performing a scene from the film. Anyone have
a date for that program?
I've been waiting for someone to do a log of Mail Call shows so I can date the
Jack Benny appearances, but here's some direction. "George Washington Slept
Here" opened on November 28, 1942. So chances are good that it's within a few
weeks of that date.
Fred Berney asked:
Can anyone help me with a date for a Jack Benny TV Show? His guest is Raymond
Burr and it starts off with Jack introducing Burr as a stand up comedian.
Burr
tried to tell a joke and Jack keeps interrupting him and explaining how he
should do the joke.
That's November 5, 1961.
Derek Tague asked:
are there any other instances of USA place names inspired by OTR programmes?
How about street names?
I don't know if this quite counts, but there's a George Burns Road and Gracie
Allen Drive by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center just west of CBS in Los Angeles.

Subject: Miking the Audience
I apologize if this topic has been discussed recently, but I was
wondering whether there were standards for picking up audience reactions
in OTR. Some shows, such as Lux Radio Theater, seem to avoid picking up
much audience response. Laugh lines often receive only a distant rumble
and suggest that the audience was quite a distance away from the
performers.
On the other hand, programs such as the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show -
brilliantly restored by the First Generation Radio Archives (the usual
disclaimers apply) - the audience is so closely miked they sound as
though the performers are in the middle of them. No doubt, comedies
depended upon audience reaction more than dramas, but I wonder how
deliberate was the microphone placement. Did it vary from show to show
even in the same studio, or did the mikes stay put regardless of the
show? Anybody know?
