I greatly enjoyed Jim Harmon & Joe Mackey's explanation of what happened to
Gildy's wife.
Could this start a thread of explanations for some of OTR's other mysteries?
Would Charlie approve? Tune in [removed]

Subject: Stop The Music

I am new to the list. Charlie Summers relayed a request of mine to the list
on November 28. I was looking for information on a radio program called
Name That Tune. It turns out I was misinformed and the program was Stop The
Music. My father was a contestant on the show - I believe in September
1951. If anyone knows of a source of recordings of Stop The Music I would
like to know about it. Incidentally, I am also looking for an old movie
called Gallant Bess (not the Adventures of Gallant Bess). I am doing a
personal biography video of my father and that is why I'm looking for this
stuff. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jerry Murphy

Hi Everybody,

I heard today during the CBS news at 1 [removed] West Coast time that Artie Shaw
pass away. I talk to Artie a couple of times and he worked on the Burns and
Allen show. He did not like that kind of set up. He thoughts it was
amazing that Les
Brown could adapt to that kind of a format with Bob Hope radio show. Artie
had strong ideas on many subject. He was a major talent in music. Take
care,

Add Artie Shaw to that group, born 5/23/10.

Unfortunately, almost immediately after I saw this, I learned that Artie Shaw
passed away today (Thursday) at his home in California, at age 94.

more than 3,000 sides in his career. Radio relevence: Billy Murray appeared
for a time in the 1940s on the WLS National Barndance, immediately after the
death of another phonograph pioneer, and often his collegue, Henry Burr. I
have a tape of Billy's appearance on the NBC Alka Seltzer portion of the
Barndance as it was broadcast from the Great Lakes Training Base in IL not
far from Chicago. It was 1943 and we were not winning the war. And when I
hear the audience of sailors singing "Anchors Aweigh" I wonder how many of
them made it back.

Billy Murry died in the summer of 1955 while attending an appearance of Guy
Lombardo at Jones beach on Long Island. For his contribution to the history
of recorded sound he got a terribly small obit in the New York Times.

Happy New Year, Gang!

James Yellen posts:

The speculation on whatever happened to Gildersleeve's wife is very
interesting. <snip> Luigi's mama is refered to in every episode, but alas,
never gets to come to
America. Can anyone come up with similar characters in OTR?

Regarding OTR characters referred to "in name only," I can think of:

--Myrt, the Telephone Operator, whom we never hear during those one-sided
flirty phone calls
Fibber McGee regales us with.
--Molly McGee's Uncle Dennis, the butt of many a drunk joke.
--Big Chief something-or-other, whom Shreevie the Cab Driver on "The Shadow"
is always talking about.
--Archie the Bartender's boss Patrick Duffy--altho' I hear he showed up once
to deliver the line "You're fired!"
(and Donald Trump wants to copyright that!). Likewise, Miss Duffy's mother.
--"Gorilla" Hogan, a drunken lout who frequents "Duffy's Tavern" [his name
shows up in the recently discussed
"Miracle in Manhattan" episode].
--Clifton Finnegan's family.
--various relatives of the "It Pays to Be Ignorant" panelists including Harry
MacNaughton's wife, Lulu Mc
Connell's husband whom she refers to as "my old man," George Shelton's Uncle
Webfoot, plus various
denizens at the boarding house where Shelton resides.
--Jimmy Durante's pal "Umbriago" whom Durante always sings about.
--As the couplet (Ogden Nash, query?) goes: "No building ever made/Could house
the friends of 'Vic 'n' Sade.'"

I'm going out on a limb to hazard:

--Ida "Mrs. Eddie" Cantor.
--Gracie Allen's daffy sister.
[they might've shown up at one time or another].

See you all in the 2005 ether!

Does anyone know if Elspeth is still with us? If so, she'd be 92.
