Essentially, this is correct. My web site has a fairly extensive history
and lots of other items (photos and premiums and some scripts, etc.)
about Captain Midnight. [removed]

Here is some of that history regarding the recordings, etc:
Regarding the Skelly years: The program was syndicated, recorded on 16"
glass discs at a studio in an office building at La Salle St and Wacker
Drive at the ad agency of Blackett, Sample and Hummert. The discs were
then regionally distributed to participating radio stations.

Regarding the national run: For the national run, the series moved first
to the Mutual network via WGN on the 11th floor of the Tribune Building
beginning in September 1940. Then it was picked up in September 1942 by
the Blue Network. The studio moved to the 19th floor of the Merchandise
Mart. Once more when the government split up the Blue Network from NBC,
Ovaltine moved it back to Mutual beginning in September 1945 where it
remained until it went off the air.

Hope this clears up some of the speculation.

Subject: Greenberg's on Third

In her outstanding "39 Forever" Volumes One and Two, Laura Leff explains
this and many other long-running gags on the Benny radio show. For Jack
Benny fans, the books are a must-own and I can't speak highly enough of them.

Essentially, it comes down to a very memorable game in a pennant race when
Greenberg was on third, tried to score during a controversial call, and was
tagged out. Hhe'd get his revenge later in the game.

Subject: "Tokyo Rose"

I generally share my friend Jack French's view that Iva Toguri did not
deserve the conviction for treason that came her way. But I don't see why she
might deserve to be called an American "heroine," as Jack referred to her in
his recent post.

I think the term is used too loosely nowadays -- sometimes as a label for
people who are more correctly innocent victims of crime, rather than heroes.
Perhaps Jack can elaborate if he still sees the term as being warranted.

I read the original question followed by two responses
that referred to Hank Greenberg. But I know there's
more to it than that. I just don't know what. Perhaps
there was a game where he got a triple with no outs,
but ended up stranded there and wasn't able to score.
Perhaps the writers were using that as a jumping off
point for some gags. I'm just guessing here, but there
has to be a specific reference. I've heard those
shows, too, and have wondered what they mean.

Subject: Captain Midnight map

When the current story was being run in the
1930s, we listeners (grade school) were told
to go to our Skelly station and get a map that
would tell us where something important to
the story was located (if we could figure out
how to use the map).

Was this the "Mexican Adventure" map that is mentioned in some of the Parada
Treasure episodes?

I'm much to young to remember any of the OTR era, so I can't claim to have
gotten the map (or won the prize)!

Does anyone know if anyone onlist know if any of those maps have survived?

I recieved the following bad news today about Bill. Many of us here knew him
from the old-time radio conventions, which he attended with his wife
Lucille, and also through his postings on this digest. He had a million
stories about his days in radio and shared them with anyone who took the
time to listen. Rest in peace, Bill.

Barbara

I just want to notify SPERDVAC that Bill Murtough died on Sept. 22, 2006 in
Stuart, FL.
He had been in ill health for over a year with heart trouble but died easily
with the help of Hospice.
If you remember he had been a sound engineer with CBS from 1944-1981 when
he retired, and during those years he was personal engineer to Lowell
Thomas.
And before that he built radio stations in Gloversville, NY and Palm
Springs, CA.
Served as a civilian with the Signal Corps during WW2 with testing and
developing of radar.
But his career started when he was in charge of public address system for
3 summers at Geauga Lake Park near Cleveland (now known as SeaWorld).
During that time (1935,1936,and 1937), he also did some sound engineering at
the Great Lakes Exposition.
He continued in the Cleveland area until the fall of 1941 when he was
hired by the Bulova organization for WOV in New York. And from then on he
led a very interesting life with early radio, then TV and finally back to
radio again.
Bill really enjoyed your conventions and seeing all your members and
talking over old times. And of course he appreciated being on the podium
sometimes too.
We were married in 1995 and his activities opened many interesting and
stimulating
activities. Thanks to SPERDVAC for preserving an important part of American
history.

I saw Gwynne's post asking for the information, and am hoping that Peter will

Thank you to all who responded about my Greenberg/Jack Benny question. We
did kind of assume that the Greenberg in question was Hank, but were really
wondering if there were any running jokes on the show - or in the media of
that time - that might explain why a reference to Greenberg being on third
might be funny. Any thoughts?

I have in My hot hands a very interesting magazine "Movie - Radio Guide"
dated July, 1943. Cost $.15 a copy or subscription $[removed] a year or $[removed] for
2 years.
It's large Magazine about by
10 1/2 " by 13 3/4" and has 53 pages of radio programs all over the United
States for 55 radio stations from 5,000 Watts to 50,[removed] Including
NBC, CBS, MBS & Blue Network. Programs, including local show from 7:00 AM
until 12:00 midnight in a 3 time zone ( example CWT Or MWT, "W" is for
Wartime)
Monday through Sunday. Plus info on current movies and some interesting
articles too. There Are even listing of short wave programing.

The Guide was published in Chicago, Editors in New York, Holly wood The
cover has a picture of Claudette Colbert in a world military uniform as she
appears in The Movie "So Proudly We Hail". There is a picture of Capt. Clark
Gable in uniform, My wife tells me she had a color print of the picture on
her bed room wall.
Because this is a July issue a lot of the network show are summer
replacements.
The title of a few articles are "Georgia Carroll Kay Kyser Helped Her to
Jump from Modeling To Airlanes", "Dinah-Mite" Dinah Shore an Armed Forces
Favorite", Case of the Train Murder" A Counter- Spy Story", & "Frequency
Modulation" an Outstanding Industry in the Post War Period" in 1943 there
were only 3 FM stations.

Also The results of a Movie-Radio Guide's of Stars Poll for 1943
