Hugh Anderson & I started an OTR Club here in Tryon, NC. The interesting
thing is that out of a population of approx 3,00 0 people, we see at least
21 people at our monthly meetings. No dues No officers just one of of
listening to OTR.
My question is this. A couple of months ago someone had a riddle about what
do you call Robin Hood when he gets a cell phon. Ans. Corliss archer. Our
group really enjoyed the joke and yesterday at our meeting two folks asked
if I had someother OTR material. A negative answer on my part.
Does anyone out there have some OTR jokes or riddles thatr I can pass

In the Entertainment Television online posting about Johnny Carson's career:
[removed]
the reference to his being on the radio was that Carson got his start in
broadcasting as a student at the University of Nebraska when he was allowed
to be late for his first class so he could work at the local radio station.
In 1950 he headed west to California and shifted to TV. He was a staff
announcer for KNXT and soon hosted the program "Carson's Cellar."

Thanks to the information posted by Art Chimes regarding the copyright
database of the Library of Congress, I've spent some time looking up various
authors.

Then Martin Grams' comments about the fact you can't completely trust what
you read on various websites about OTR suddenly became true of the Library
of Congress's copyright site! I looked up "Radio's Golden Years" by Frank
Bresee and Bobb Lynes. Guess who it lists as the author of the
Foreword---Norman Cousins! We all know it was Norman CORWIN!!!!

Who next?

Subject: Re: Carson on Radio

Johnny Carson ALMOST hosted a network radio show on the Columbia
Broadcasting System.

Soon after Carson landed a job as a staff announcer at KNXT in 1950,
CBS promised to put him in as the host of its sustaining radio quiz
show, "Earn Your Vacation," which Jay C. Flippen had hosted during the
1949-1950 season. But that plan fell victim to CBS's desire to keep
Lucille Ball happy.

Lucy, trying to save her marriage, wanted husband Desi Arnaz to co-star
in her TV pilot, in order to keep him close to home (instead of touring
the country with his band). CBS wasn't wild about having Desi play the
part of Lucy's husband, but the network finally gave in. In the
meantime, while the pilot was being developed, CBS kept Desi in
Hollywood by handing him the "Earn Your Vacation" hosting job--even
though that job had already been promised to Johnny Carson.

To match the Latin flavor of its new host, all the "vacation" prizes
on the show were changed to Caribbean cruises and the title became
"Your Tropical Trip." The re-vamped show went on the air, with Desi
Arnaz as host, in January of 1951. It lasted until later that year,
shortly before "I Love Lucy" premiered on CBS-TV.

Four years later, when CBS revived "Earn Your Vacation" as a TV series,
Carson finally got the hosting job he'd been promised.

Subject: various

I have some of NBC's broadcasts where they featured
Johnny Carson and others celebrating anniversaries at
NBC. If anyone has any local Johnny Carson radio
appearances, I would be interested in those. Although
not mentioned in the IMDB, Carson appeared on a Jack
Benny TV show in the late 1950's or early 1960's,
playing a robot that is taken apart (Broken-down) at
night and then reassambled in the morning. He may
also have been on an episode of Get Smart, but not
sure when
(mid-1960's?) This was also not mentioned in the IMDB
as far as I noticed. He played a train conductor in
Get Smart. He spent very little time in radio and it
was only a jumping-off point to TV. Jack Paar and
others spent more time in radio, but it may only have
been because they were older and radio was still the
current, contemporary medium.
Jack Paar was doing a summer replacement program for
Jack Benny in 1947 and 1948 and Steve Allen also did
some radio. I noticed that during the some of the
tribute shows, Doc Severinson was absent (and I think
his fill-in, Tommy Newsom may have died). I remember
Jack Benny's last or nearly last TV appearance was on
The Tonight Show and Johhny Carson had a small circle
of favorite guests, many of whom appeared as
guest/substitute hosts (Jerry Lewis for instance) and
many
started in radio because in the 1960's and 1970's
that's who appeared.

I am an ex-typesetter. I worked at a newspaper in Massachusetts in the early
'80s on a CRTronic Linotype, which was the transition machine between punched
paper tape and desktop publishing. While I worked at this job, I read a book
by Thomas Dreier called THE POWER OF PRINT--AND MEN, copyright 1936 by the
Mergenthaler Linotype Company. An appendix to the book was a radio play
broadcast on NBC (I don't know the date) called A SALUTE TO THE MODERN
NEWSPAPER. Does anyone have a recording of it? Or does anyone know where it
can be obtained? If someone has a recording they are willing to share,
please E-mail me privately.

Subject: Frees via Asimov

There's a good reason to pick up the new Asimov's Science Fiction magazine
this
month. Seems the Paul Frees book got a great review:

Asimov's Science Fiction, March 2005. Paul Di Filippo

"we are indebted to author Ben Ohmart for providing a breezy, yet
comprehensive
biography of Frees. Here we get to witness Frees's early days in radio, his
transition to
the big screen, his involvement with animation, and his dubbing and
advertising work.
But aside from the professional aspects of Frees' life, we are privy to his
offstage
personality and shenanigans (Frees was a true eccentric), thanks to extensive
interviews with surviving friends, relatives and co-workers. It's a balanced,
warts-and-all
kind of treatment, neither excessively reverential nor sniping, and makes for
fascinating
reading."

Kermyt Anderson mentions the NYTimes obit and also says: "Incidentally,
several of the online obits I've seen have mentioned Johnny's debt to Jack
[Benny] as well."

But so many of the obits have been crediting Carson for things that should
have been credited to Jack Paar and even Ed Sullivan. I've just posted
onto the Kine-L details about USA Today crediting Carson for switching the
program to color and the New York Times crediting him for switching to
videotape -- both of which was started earlier by Paar. Carson is given
the credit for starting careers that really may have been started on Paar
or Sullivan's programs.
