Subject: S. O. S. (OTR-TV CONNECTION)

I'm working on a research project that compares the radio version of
CASEY, CRIME PHOTOGRAPHER to it's short lived TV version (CRIME
PHOTOGRAPHER: that aired on CBS between 4/19/51 and 6/5/52 and featured
Darren McGaven).
I have access to the Information i will need for the RADIO program
but, except for some very basic information (cast, director, musical score,
etc. mostly gathered from GOOGLE sources) I lack information about plot
titles or descriptions that would be helpful in building a LOG.
TV GUIDE, I am told, did not go national until 1959. Another
publication, TV INDEX, was in print at the time, but copies going back to
1951-52 are extremely scarce.
Digest readers who may be early TV buffs or who enjoy the challenge of
the hunt, as researchers are asked to contact me off line with any ideas,
suggestions, offers of assistance, etc.

Subject: Stanley Niss

Greg Jackson asked:

What, you are asking, does this have to do with old-time radio? Well,
the end credits of this "Hawaiian Eye" episode said it was produced by
Stanley Niss with a teleplay by Louis Pelletier based on a radio play by
Stanley Niss. Unfortunately, no further information was given to help
identify the radio show.

Louis Pelletier wrote for numerous radio programs, as well as Stanley Niss.
As often the case, the script writers who made a living for radio also wrote
for television when they realized that radio was dying down. Often they
made the transition easily by reusing scripts from other series. Niss wrote
for GANG BUSTERS, MISTER DISTRICT ATTORNEY and many other radio programs.
During the 1950s and 1960s, he pulled out his radio scripts and simply
"borrowed" the plots, changed the settings and names of main characters and
whola! New script.

Many of the GANG BUSTERS and MISTER DICTRICT ATTORNEY scripts were rehashed
into HAWAIIAN EYE, THE DETECTIVES and 21ST PRECINCT. Another connection is
that Niss actually created HAWAIIAN EYE for Warner Bros.
(Source info from GANG BUSTERS: THE CRIME FIGHTERS OF AMERICAN BROADCASTING,
2004).

Subject: Dr. Christian

I certainly enjoy the column, This Week In Radio History (Those Were the
Days) and was happy to see mention of the 1937 debut of Dr. Christian.
Missing from the list of performers, however, was Art Gilmore,
previously known as Arthur Gilmore, probably the only announcer the show
ever had. To those of us who attended radio shows in those days, the
announcer was a very important part of the show, not because of the
on-air commercials he delivered so much as the fact that he would do a
"warm-up" of the audience before the show would go on the air. In radio,
to the studio audience, the "curtain call" essentially occurred before
air time, and it was the announcer who introduced every performer before
the show. Let that be a history lesson and suggestion to those who are
now doing radio re-creations, if historical accuracy is to be observed.
We have held to this in my two radio-recreation groups: 30 Minutes To
Curtain; and The St. Joan of Arc Radio Players.

Since the Digest has mentioned recently an inclusion of "those who are
still with us", I am happy to say that Art Gilmore and his lovely wife
Grace are still very much with us. Art still lends his talents to
SPERDVAC as well as to REPS. I have never been to Newark, so I do not
know if he participates there. Mr. Gilmore is a strong participant of
Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters, and usually attends the luncheons as well
as the once-a-month Nostalgia Night gatherings.

Needless to say, as a kid in Hollywood, I attended many Dr. Christian
broadcasts and, to those who wonder, not only is Mr. Gilmore a truly
kind gentleman to everybody nowadays, but he was also very much that to
a pesty, pimply-faced teenager in those days also.

I thought I had a source stating that Shirley Michell has a Indiana
connection. I can't find it. Did Shirley lived or worked in Indiana or do I
take her off my list. It would be great to contact her and get stories of her
working with Hoosier Red Skelton. Red's hometown Vincennes Indiana is working
on a museum. I hope she would be willing to donate items from his radio and
TV show. I bet she has some great stories also.

Subject: WTIC's Golden Age of Radio

As you may know, in the 1970's Dick Bertel created a
program for WTIC in Hartford, CT, called "The Golden
Age of Radio." The idea came to Dick after he interviewed
radio collector-historian Ed Corcoran a few times. It was
first broadcast in April, 1970; Ed was his co-host.

For the next seven years the program featured interviews
with radio actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians
from radio's early days. In addition, each show featured
excerpts from Ed's collection. Some of the guests included
Alexander Scourby, Mel Blanc, William Spier, Goodman Ace,
Mary Jane Higby, and many others.

Dick and I have set up a website, which lists all 84 shows
in the series. In addition, there's a link where you can
listen to or download one of those shows per month. The
first show, featuring Stanley Quinn, Writer and Producer
for the radio department of the J. Walter Thompson
Advertising Agency, can be heard throughout this month.
