EDDIE HUBBARD & THE BROWSERS: "SAVE THE BONES FOR HENRY JONES"
Johnny Mercer's great song title headlines this episode of "The
Browsers" from 1999. Johnny and Nat King Cole sing it with great fun and
energy to go along with some wonderful tunes this time like "Skirts and
Sweaters," "Marie," "Trade Winds," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "Teach Me
Tonight," and "The Way You Look Tonight." For fun it's Louis Prima and
Keely Smith doing their novelty "thing" with "Embraceable You," For an
historical touch Vaughn Monroe does "Old Soldiers Never Die," and
Charlie Barnet and Savannah Churchill do the touching tune from WW I
called "Just a Baby's Prayer at Midnight." Add performers like Bing
Crosby, the Dorseys, Freddy Martin, Gene Krupa, and the DeCastro
Sisters, and we have a super show. Trivia challenges involve the lyrics
to "Old Soldiers," songs with wearing apparel as in "Skirts and
Sweaters," the number of weeks "Trade Winds" was on "Your Hit Parade" in
1940, hit recordings of "Teach Me Tonight," the words on the tombstones
for Johnny Mercer and his wife, how many Ames Brothers there were and
their names (no fair peeking at the image to the left), and the singer
for "Phil's Phooler" who sings "I Get the Blues When It Rains." Lionel
Hampton does an exuberant version of "Air Mail Special" to close the
show, although the station sadly cut in before the end. A reminder that
any contact or mailing information Eddie mentions during these shows is,
of course, out of date. Also out of date but of interest, 1999, the year
of this show, was designated "The Year of Older Persons" by the United
Nations. Good to know that codgers like me at least had one special year
in "world events." Even better to know, as [removed] Lewis said, "You are
never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." And , as the
George and Ira Gershwin song from 1937 goes, "You Can't Take That [even
a goal or dream] Away From Me," and that's the tune Eddie opens with. Enjoy!
Again, special thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting the
original studio tape for highest quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time
Episode 5
In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"

Subject: October issue RADIO RECALL
The full-color PDF version of the October 2012 issue of RADIO RECALL has been
emailed to all subscribers who prefer that format. Those who selected the B &
W hard copy will be mailed theirs on or about October 15th.
The recent discussions on the Digest about the radio and TV animated cartoon
appearances of the comic book hero, THE SPIRIT, prompted us to secure
submissions from two gentlemen who have specialized knowledge of this
cross-over. Rick Payne sets forth the mystery of THE SPIRIT discs maintained
by the Library at Ohio State University. Karl Schadow provides us with the
background of how this hero in the comic strips was brought to the radio
airwaves through the efforts of The Philadelphia Record (which contained THE
SPIRIT strips) and their local station, WFIL.
New OTR books seem to be falling from the skies and three of the latest are
reviewed in this issue. The interesting and humorous "Network Radio Ratings,
1932-1953" written by Jim Ramsburg is reviewed by John Heimann, who terms the
book, "A seemingly bottomless collection of fascinating anecdotes." Another
McFarland publication, "Musicmakers of Network Radio" by the diligent
historian, Jim Cox, is reviewed by Maury Cagle, who rates it one of Jim's
best.
Coming from the presses of Bear Manor Media is "Perfect Fool: The Life and
Career of Ed Wynn" written by Garry Berman and it is reviewed by Michael J.
Hayde, who calls it "a breezy yet respectful tome." Another Bear Media Book,
not yet released, will be reviewed in our December issue. This one was
written by actor Craig Wickham and is entitled: "STANDING IN THE SPIRIT - The
History of Dickens' Christmas Carol as Radio/Audio Drama."
The MWOTRC held its August meeting within the confines of the Mid-Atlantic
Nostalgia Convention in Hunt Valley, MD, at the invitation of Martin Grams,
[removed] It was a huge success and Mark Bush provides all the details to those
who were unable to attend. In 1922 the radio edition of "Popular Mechanics"
revealed all the latest in broadcast reception, including a "garter radio"
which was strapped to m'lady's leg. Read all about it in October issue, along
with details on "Mr. Spear" and "Miss Mint" who passed out cash prizes in the
mid-30s to any folks who had Wrigley's Gum in their pockets.
All this, plus the latest info on the resurrected OTR conventions in Newark
and Cincinnati.
