Subject: The Shadow's Clyde Burke
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
In THE SHADOW MAGAZINE, Clyde Burke was originally an ex-reporter who wrote
occasional feature
stories and runs a clipping bureau. He quickly becomes a reporter for
the EVENING CLASSIC, later to become THE NEW YORK CLASSIC.
(It gets more detailed but in short, he was a reporter.) With access to crime
files and contacts with the police department
(most notably, detective Joe Cardona), he was able to investigate
certain facts that came to The Shadow's attention. He was formerly a
crime reporter for another newspaper when a business merger caused a
number of the staff to lose their jobs Burke among them.
Burke appeared in character (with no deviation) in a total of four radio
broadcasts. He was not an agent for The Shadow, but he definitely
appears in the opening scene of "The Ruby of Modoc" (Nov. 21, 1937).
Identified as a newspaper reporter and referred to only by his last
name, Burke is covering the recent marriage of Barry Ashton to
Commissioner Weston's niece and their departure for their honeymoon. In
"The Poison Death" (Jan. 30, 1938), the entire police force is working
against a poison epidemic that has filled hospital rooms and morgues
with victims. A wild scheme of a crazed mind has attempted to hold the
city at ransom for one million and when the mayor fails to pay up,
people are victimized. Clyde Burke is identified by his full name as a
reporter for THE CLASSIC who appears in three brief lines over
the phone, reading the new threat that was apparently mailed in to the
newspaper office.
In "The Tenor With the Broken Voice" (June 5, 1938), an opera singer is
struck down with a broken voice while singing the aria during the climax
of Piochi and sets about a series of fatal disasters for the opera
house determined to ensure none of his replacements accomplish the feat
he failed to do. Reporter Clyde Burke of THE CLASSIC phones
Commissioner Weston for details of the case, identifying himself by
name. Burke's fourth and final appearance (played by Everett Sloane) was
in "Night Without End" (Oct. 16, 1938). When the editor of the city
paper gets a phone call from Burke regarding the latest details of the
mysterious black fog that shrouds the city, the reporter is featured as a
voice over the phone reporting the details as he learned it from
Commissioner Weston's office. Like his first appearance on the program,
he is referred to as Burke, sans first name.

Subject: New Sherlock
Yes, Michael, the "new" Sherlock Holmes with Clive Merrison and Michael
Williams are excellent. They run 45:00, except for the novels which are
60:00. BBC did the broadcasts and made them available for sale. The acting
is excellent and the sfx are very realistic. They have the "aura" or
whatever it is called. If you are a Sherlock fan, be sure to listen to
these. Coules even wrote some new scripts, not part of the Doyle series.
The music is solo violin, and there are no commercials.
And the series is complete. They include all the stories and novels that
Doyle wrote about Sherlock.
In my opinion, the acting is as good as, or superior to Rathbone and Bruce.
Maybe I should say, the acting is different, wonderfully different.
