CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 28
The "Lady Esther Screen Guild Theater" of April 21, 1947, presents "Too
Many Husbands" starring Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, and Lucille Ball. Bob
and Frank do their things in this comedy held together by Lucille Ball's
steadying performance. The play is adapted from the 1940 film of the
same name starring Fred MacMurray, Jean Arthur, and Melvyn Douglas. A
spouse lost at sea who suddenly shows up was the plot in two other films
with actors Cary Grant, Irene Dunne, and Randolph Scott in one and James
Garner, Doris Day, and Chuck Conners in the other. The radio version is
more like a sketch on Bob Hope's own show, but it's great fun. And, of
course, Lucille Ball starred with Richard Denning in the radio show "My
Favorite Husband "from July 23, 1948, through March 31, 1951.
Then it's a Classics & Curios Extra: "Guest Star,"
also from 1947, with Frank Sinatra singing "Great Day" and "You'll Never
Walk Alone." Also, Harry Sosnik and the orchestra do "Sticky Fingers."
The announcer is Les Tremaine who encourages the radio audience to buy
savings bonds and tells Frank that his performance was "swell."
