This would have been in a comic from perhaps 1960, and it is of some
interest from the standpoint of anyone who teaches science because it
shows the sort of interest in science that kids had in those days.

I was following the comics fairly closely, and that's about when that
device first appeared. I know it never appeared on the TV show. I'm
not old enough to have heard the radio show when it was originally
on, and I've heard only a few of the recordings. But I would be
awfully surprised if that ever appeared on the radio show. If it
had, I would think it would have been in the TV show and in the
comics much earlier.

I don't think this had anything to do with kids' interest in science
(though, in the wake of Sputnik, the school systems were pushing
science pretty heavily). This isn't science, it's comic book pseudo-
science. It's in the same league with the explanation of Superman's
non-strength powers that first appeared sometime in the 1960s, to the
effect that it's caused by radiation from our yellow sun (Krypton had
a red sun).

If this in any way represented actual advances in fiber science, it
was only a coincidence.

Subject: Paul Temple

David Rogers in issue #73 asked:

Ian, I did not know that there was an Australian production of Paul
Temple. (Takes a deep breath) Are there any recordings of the
Australian production available?

I don't know David. ABC had a far worse track record than BBC when it came
to destroying material. They are partnering with us on the Encyclopaedia of
Australian Radio Shows database (EARSdb) so I will ask their archivist. I
am not aware of any copies in Collectors hands, but I will ask them as well.

Subject: Benny Allen Fued

Years ago there was a 2 LP set that had snippets of the Benny-Allen Fued that
culminated with the "King for a Day" (I believe it was Radiolo LPs) sketch on
Allen's show. This was one of my favourite records. However, I no longer
owned an LP and had sent them to someone to transfer to CD or MP3 for me.
Lonmg story short, I never received the transfers.

Does anybody out there have this LP set and a follow up single LP that was
the "Benny-Allen Fued Continued"? Would you habe it on CD?

This would be a good time to plug an excellent resource book if one is
interested in researching out collections, etc. of radio programs,
scripts, actors, papers, etc.

David and Susan Siegel's "A Resource Guide to the Golden Age of Radio"
published by Book Hunter Press is very complete in providing pointers to
such collections along with the contact information, how to research
these locations, etc. Besides USC's Burns and Allen collection, there
are other locations with additional material.

Subject: tax donations, OTR

Someone asked:
I am donating my entire collection of old radio programs on reel to
reel tape to a university. Does anyone know what value to put on
an individal reel (for tax purposes)?

Jack French's suggestion to consult a CPA/accountant is the best advice when
it concerns dollar values. If you do your own taxes, and do not employ an
accountant, I too would suggest you still consult an accountant.

As for donating to a University, make sure they actually plan to make the
collection available. One University that received OTR-related scripts and
materials have kept the collection unavailable for library patrons for more
than 15 years and even e-mails and letters have not gotten the staff to
catalog, inventory or make their collection available to the public yet.
(Their excuse is they don't have the staff or funding to have it cataloged
and I am sure this excuse is used over and over by other libraries with the
same issues, even when I myself volunteer to catalog and inventory their
holdings for free.)

Lastly, make sure it isn't a library that "may" sell your collection.
Though no staff on hand will tell you they do it, some libraries have VERY
STRICT policies to only shelve or archive materials that originate from
distributors such as Eagle and Ingram, and anything else is considered a
"donation" that occassionally ends up in their annual "book sale." I once
donated books to a University library and weeks later I was at their annual
book sale and saw my own books on the sale shelf for $[removed] and $[removed] prices.
I did buy them back and learned this horrible fact. Not saying the
University you are donating will do this to your reels, but it won't hurt to
at least ask and confirm that they won't sell the reels after you donate
them and get the answer from a first-hand source that handles such matters.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

In response to the gent that posted about Paul Temple, a couple isolated
eps of the '38 Paul Temples showed up, too. One of The Front Page Men,
I think the other is Send For Paul Temple.

Subject: Cassette Storage

Hi all

I have my large collection of old radio programs
mostly on cassettes. These are stored in the Fellowes
plastic storage cases that hold 15 tapes per box. I
have several tapes to file but can no longer find
these boxes. I contacted Fellowes and was told that
they are no longer manufacturing these storage cases.
I used to get them at Walmart, but they no longer have
them (at least at the store near me). Any suggestions
as to where I can find some of these or something
similar? I'm in the Chicago area, north suburbs.

Thanks for any help.
