Anyone out there know what Rochester's last appearance with Jack was?
And did he ever sit for a full length interview (Mike Wallace style)
or shorter spots.
Well, I did see one of Jack Benny's specials in the late 1960s or
early 1970s on which Rochester/Eddie Anderson appeared. I remember
one bit of business where Jack is suggesting some new show ideas to
do with Rochester. After several suggestions fall flat, Jack
suggests, "Let's do a show in which you play my butler." Rochester
replies, "We don't DO that kind of work no more!" This produces a
loud applause, and Jack embraces Rochester. If this wasn't
Rochester's last appearance, it's the sort of thing that ought to
have been.

Subject: Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention
Got home yesterday from a fantastic weekend at MANC in Aberdeen MD. In this
time of economic downturn, it's amazing that this is one convention that has
managed to break it's own attendance record each year.
A reorganized layout allowed for additional dealers and attendees this time
around, but the rooms were still bursting at the seams, especially during the
celebrity interviews that always played to a standing room only crowd. Don
Ramlow directed a couple of top notch recreations, Neal Ellis made sure that
the whole world had a chance to hear what was happening via Yesterday USA and
in general this was a smooth event that should be setting the blueprint for
how similar events should be conducted.
MANC is quickly becoming THE convention of the year, thanks to Martin Grams'
tireless devotion and promotional know-how. Readers would be advised not to
miss next years' event.

Bud Collyer ... Most people didn't have a clue
as to the identity of Superman until a TIME magazine article about
Collyer appeared in 1946.
With all respect, Joe - hadn't this been exposed as one of "those" myths
about Network-Era radio?
I have a hazy memory of reading that - though Bud's name may not have been
trumpeted in the role - it wasn't totally hidden, either.

Subject: Re: Mickey Rooney
Hello again --
Mickey Rooney, noted perhaps by OTRers for his many radio appearances,
celebrated his 89th birthday (!) in our town yesterday afternoon, after a
warmup four-hand piano act by the Katzenjammer Boys of England. He follows
earlier presentations in the same theater by Jerry Lewis, Patti Page, and
Wayne Newton, all of whom were passibly successful in their performances.
Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend this show. Mickey's an old trooper, and
it would be a thrill to see him in person if he could handle it . . but he
could hardly walk, had his coat buttoned wrong, read everything from a
teleprompter, was unable to sing with his hoarse voice, and was relieved
halfway through the act by his 8th wife Jan (who has been married to him for
thirty years), who sang several songs in a cabaret style but was good only
in comparison with Mickey's singing.
Very sad. There were a few clips of him from his early movies, and his
interaction with Judy Garland on a TV special, but nothing that wouldn't be
available elsewhere from video stores or the internet.
I wish I could have seen him in the seventies and/or eighties with Ann
Miller in "Sugar Babies," an old extended burlesque routine which was his
last hurrah and a loud one at that. But better to remember Mickey as he was
in the forties, when he was the most popular (and highly paid) movie star in
the world. What a sad conclusion that his agent(s) would parade him in front
of his audiences in this condition . . and in September he and Jan are
embarking on a twelve-day tour of Canada with the same show.
yOurs TRuly,
Jan Bach

Subject: Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention
Hi everyone,
Just back from the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in Aberdeen,
Maryland. A fantastic time was had by all! There were terrific celebrity
guests such as Lee Meriwether, Celeste Holm, Johnny Whitaker, James Best,
Diana Sowle, and, for us OTR fans, the wonderful pair of Bob Hastings and
Rosemary Rice.
Among the many entertaining events was a presentation on "Challenge of the
Yukon" by Mr. WXYZ, Terry Salomonson, a sample of radio news coverage of
historic events entitled "Radio Was There" by Neal Ellis, another fine
presentation from Jack French, and a Don Ramlow directed recreation of a lost
episode of "The Shadow" from 1944, starring Bob Hastings as Lamont
Cranston/The Shadow and Rosemary Rice as Margot Lane.
There was a huge jump in attendance from last year's convention, and most
events were standing room only. The only problem was the convention, as
always, ended too quickly. I can't wait till next year!
So thank you to Martin and Michelle Grams for 3 fun-filled days. I'll be
there next [removed] so should every OTR and nostalgia fan!

Hi Joe,
This is to summarize part of what we discussed off-list, for others
who may be interested.
According to the Internet Movie Database site, the last time
"Rochester" appeared on Jack's regular TV series ("Jack Benny
Program") was the next-to-last episode of the series, "Jack Has Dog
Trouble," which aired April 9, 1965.
The Internet Movie Database site also shows Eddie Anderson as having
two more TV appearances with Jack Benny, but as "Self" (the actor who
played Rochester) rather than Rochester: "The Kraft Music Hall Friars
Club Roast of Jack Benny" (which aired January 21 1970), and "Jack
Benny's Twentieth Anniversary Special" (which aired November 16,
1970).
[His last listed TV appearance is "The Good Old Days of Radio," March
19, 1976, as himself, with no appearance by Jack Benny.]
Thanks for your off-list e-mail which led me to recheck my original
answer, and which in so doing saved me from posting an
incomplete/inaccurate answer here.
