Subject: Re: Making old radio programs more "accessible"

I have to agree with Jan Bach's sentiments regarding the "cartoonization"
of OTR.

I was approached about twenty years ago by a guy who had an animation
studio - his concept was to license OTR shows and do computer
animation for (at the time) cable TV.

And my feeling then is the same as Jan Bach's is now:

"Once animation has been added, the Lucille Ball program (or The Lone
Ranger, or The Shadow) no longer suggests images to the listener; it
tells them what to see."

The scripts were for the mind's eye - to add pictures is gilding the lily.

Subject: Ronald Reagan in radio

Yes, Ronald Reagan did contribute to "old time radio."
Years ago as the librarian at the SD School for the Blind
I came across several audio cassettes featuring Reagan.
These and many others were offered to our blind and
visually impaired students. This collection is where I first
found "I love a mystery."
He acted in such anthology shows as the Lux Radio Theater,
Screen Guild Players, Screen Directors Playhouse, and
several more that I do not recall. I plan to dub these programs
to CD this year.

Seeing the animated "My Favorite Husband" reminded me of some other attempts
to put visuals to vintage radio.

Subject: Re: More about "A Remarkable Achievement"

Hello again --

As a postscript to my letter published in the Digest #142, I just happened
to remember that, way back in the early days of Chicago television, around
1949-51 or thereabouts, the Weibolt stores sponsored The Cinnamon Bear on
TV, using the original radio programs for the audio, but having glove
puppets supply the video by acting out the parts of Judy, Jimmy, and all the
fantastic characters they meet! Instead of expanding the minds of the
program's young listeners/viewers, this adaptation actually narrowed their
minds by showing these larger than life characters in forms that fit on the
fingers of one hand! On radio, the Crazy Quilt Dragon could be as large as
your imagination could conceive (and I imagined a huge but approachable
dinosaur-like creature), but on TV the dragon looked merely like a brother
to cuddly and totally unfrightening Ollie on Burr Tillstrom's show, Kukla,
Fran and Ollie. The elements of mystery and imagination were completely
missing; the show was shrunk to the dimensions of the small tv screens of
the time.

I'm delighted that for the last three years my son-in-law has made it a
nightly pre-Christmas ritual to play the CDs of the Cinnamon Bear throughout
all 26 episodes for my grandson Zachary, now six years old. By now he has
memorized the action of every episode and most of the dialogue! And that
kid has a more active imagination than most children I know; he is so good
at literally becoming anything from a tractor to a bug under a rug that I'm
sure he could hold his own in an adult game of charades!

Jan Bach
