A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: A nice surprise
I'm one of the first to notice when journalists who aren't dry behind the
ears yet ignore all mentions of a personality's radio career when reporting
their lives or career highs. So let me be among the first to praise Time
magazine, and specifically contributor Ron Simon, for his appraisal of the
life of Himan Brown in the current issue.
Simon says (which seems to be a cute idea for a game), "Although he [Brown]
dabbled in television, his passion was always radio." Ah, the bliss of it
all!
He continues, "I am sure he hoped that television would prove a passing fad
and that we would all reconnect with the aural tradition that sustained us
since the first stories were bandied about a campfire by cavemen." Double
bliss!
He lauds the shows that make us remember Brown, calling radio "the only art
form best experienced with closed eyes."
Who is this well-versed scribe? It may come as no surprise that he's the
curator of TV and radio at the Paley Center for Media. What comes as a
surprise for sure is that a national magazine (any national magazine) has
invited a knowledgeable authority to be responsible for a legend's obit.
This is promising!

Subject: Beyond the Green Door
BEYOND THE GREEN DOOR was a syndicated radio series, short and brief in
length, produced in 1965 and syndicated in 1966. The only beautiful part of
the series was the music. Obviously stock but one of the few programs to use
stock music so well that it actually heightens the plot.

Subject: Jim Cox's comments
Jim Cox's could not have stated the facts more clearly.
I just spent the weekend autographing copies of the new GREEN HORNET book at
the Wizard World Comic Con in Philadelphia and shared a table with Jim Rosin
who was selling his new book on TV's THE INVADERS. It was stressing to
discover how many youngsters under the age of 25 did not even know who THE
GREEN HORNET was, or THE LONE RANGER. We knew by Saturday afternoon that
young kids were not interested in the subject at all. One older gentleman,
however, knew it was done on radio, talked a lot about hearing the show on
the radio in the kitchen when he was a boy, went through the 820 page book
finding answers to questions he had wondered about for years (possibly
decades) but when it came time to pay for the book and even get it
autographed, he returned the book to the table and remarked that $30 was too
expensive. And worse, the young kid next to him pulled out his palm pilot and
said, "Grandpa, there's all you want to know about THE GREEN HORNET on
Wikipedia." Four pages versus 820 pages? Free versus $30? Maybe it was the
price. But last week I paid $45 plus postage for a book weighing in at 245
pages and after reading half of it on the back porch, I admitted it was well
worth the cost. I know people usually spend only discretionary money for
books, but even Jim Rosin questioned whether the economy really plays a toll
in book buying. He and I suspect Jim Cox hit the nail on the head. If it was
economy, that still puzzles me because there would not have been a crowd at
the event we just attended because admission to the Wizard World in
Philadelphia at the door was $55 per day ($150 for the weekend).
On a positive note, and a bit of irony to the story above, one young boy
wanted a book about THE TWILIGHT ZONE and I signed it to the boy but his
father paid for it. The kid was only 9 years old and loves the TV series. I
asked if he saw the 1980s and the 2000 remake series and the kid stuck his
tongue out and said those were stupid. He loves the original black and white.
And proved it by reciting lines of dialogue from a few classics. And what
made me happy was the kid asked me (I didn't prompt him) if any of Rod
Serling's radio work was on CD because he loved old time radio. I got his
name and address and will be mailing some Serling radio shows Monday morning.
Yep, we fist bumped and made each other's day.

Gene Autry, who owned his own chain of radio stations during the 1930s, has left us with more than radio history. Apparently his estate (his house) is now up for sale.

Subject: Molly's references to Fibber
I was reading a Fibber McGee & Molly script this past weekend and for some
odd reason noticed something. I then checked several other scripts and find
the same thing. I could not see any place where Molly actually called her
husband Fibber--or any other name. She did use terms like "dearie" but
never called him Fibber. When talking to other people she referred to him
as "himself."
I suppose this is something known to many of you for ages, but to me this is
a new discovery.

if I don't receive inquires about acquiring "lost" shows as I'm only
interested in knowing whether any of these are in circulation or not. I'll be
coming back with a bombardment of emails and the less the better.

"Atlantic City, NJ - WMID's special events department, in an effort to find
out whether the Silkini Chamber of Horrors Show actually kept spectators on
the edge of their seats, journeyed down to the local theater to make a
recording of the crowd's reaction to the show. The record, when completed, was
