Hi gang:

Are there any fans (and collectors) of Duffy's Tavern shows out there in OTR
DIGEST land.

Dick Van Patten and I will be going to the REPS OTR Convention in May, and
we'd love to do a recreation of a "Duffy"s script that has the character of
"Wilfred" (dopey Finnigan's brother) in the cast?

Dick Van Patten played "Wilfred" on a number of episodes, and I'd like to
play opposite him as "Finnigan".(But may just wind up directing it).

Give me a shout (or at least an e-mail) if you know where I can lay my hands
on a copy.

Best wished for the New Year.

Subject: an elderly singer?

Again, from Mr Sayles' splendid listing, we have:

xx-xx-1844 - Frank Chapman - d. 1-9-1940
singer: "The Voice of Firestone"

He would have been, like, 96 when he died and born early enough to have
fought in the Civil War. That in itself is remarkable enough. But how old
would he have been when he was a singer on The Voice of Firestone?

Stewart is correct. When I posted that Johnstone used the name John Dawson,
I was misremembering. I should have listened to the recording instead of
trusting a memory of an incident from more than 20 years ago. But, at least
my
error got some others involved!

I'd have to place Bing in the spot. A show on radio for over 30 years,
tons of movies and short subjects. A recording career of 40 or more
years. Couple weeks ago heard that he did a radio concert in England
with a full orchestra just days before he died in the early 70's. Not
bad for a guy who first radio show was in the early 30's.

 appearance/Snooks

That would be really hard to say - there were so many
good pefromers. One of my favorites is Jean Shepherd
(he started in the tail end of the OTR era, so I guess
he's eligible). Perhaps not the "greatest", but one of
my favs. I guess for all around, I'd have to concur
with Jack Benny. But it's so hard to choose. OTR
spawned so many great actors and actresses.

I was listening to Broadway is My Bear the other day,
and who was one of the characters but Burt Gordon, the
Mad Russian? When did Gordon stop doing the Russian
on radio? He was playing a straight part - the voice
was unmistakable.

By the way, from my archives I just transferred a new
Baby Snooks , as with all my uncirc. material would be
willing to entertain a trade for any decent uncirc.
material.

dave parker dave@[removed] posted about his experiences writing his
dissetation on "The Lone Ranger" half a century ago and at one point, he
reported:

Man. Here's how it happened.

Variety did a piece called "Ho Yo Culture"--and I did a Dissertation called
"A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE LONE RANGER AS A FORM OF POPULAR ART".

Well, Dave, speaking as someone who deals with many a spool of old VARIETY
microfilms, I and all the other "research nerds" (please be advised I use this
term with utmost admiration) here on the Digest would very much like to read
what VARIETY had to say. Do you, or anybody else, have an issue date or a
time-frame (month? year?) so that we can dig it up?

On another trajectory, I recently posted about LR historians such as Jim
Nixon, Terry Salomonsen, Anthony Tollin, and the late Dave Holland. Mr. Nixon
won the FOTR script-writing contest in the 1990s w/ a script in which the
Ranger and Tonto met Thomas Edison
(one of Lee Munsick's heroes). I know this query is going to open the
proverbial floodgates, but here goes:

Did The Lone Ranger ever meet any other historical personages in his radio
adventures?

"Who was that ether man?"

Subject: A remembered broadcast

As a kid I listened to a Bill Stern 'Colgate Sports
Newsreel' broadcast which included Bill giving his
version of events in songwriter Cole Porter's life.
Bill told about the horse-riding accident which
crushed Porter's legs. That broadcast was very likely
aired during the period 1944--1948. (And I seem to
recall that Porter's "Don't Fence Me In" *may* have
been sung briefly on it.)

Questions:

Would any of you have -- or know about -- a recording
of the above broadcast?

Would any of you know the exact date of the broadcast?
Or know how I could find out the date?

Many thanks.

Subject: Cinnamon Bear Mystery

My wife and I recently spent our first Christmas together, having been
married this past August, which meant a blending of Christmas traditions. I
introduced her to my favorite tradition - listening to the Cinnamon Bear.
She greatly enjoyed the adventures of Judy, Jimmy, Paddy, & Crazy Quilt, and
looks forward to next year. During the series, I mentioned to her that one
of OTR's greatest unsolved mysteries is who played Jimmy Barton. She could
not believe that this was possible, especially when I told her the rest of
the cast had been identified. Her curiousity is contagious, so I thought
I'd pass some of our questions on (with my feeble guesses in parantheses),
in hopes of some answers.

Is it still true that Jimmy is unknown? If so, how is this possible? The
actor himself, though young at the time, would surely remember, right?
(Maybe he died early? That would still leave his family, though.)
Incredibly, what about the cast/crew? They spent hours together rehearsing
and broadcasting - could they not remember his name? (Unless the cast was
identified only recently when many of them had passed away or could no
longer remember). Nothing in newspaper archives, on the net, etc?

Any CB experts out there who can solve the mystery or deepen it? [removed]

One person I have always admired among radio entertainers who should not be
entirely ignored in this discussion is Elliott Lewis. Who else could go from
conniving dingbat on the Phil Harris - Alice Faye Show to the
producer/director/actor who brought Shakespeare's Othello to Suspense? He
certainly deserves at least an also ran in the competition.

I recall the name of only one female, Judy Garland, being mentioned among the
greatest of entertainers. Dare we forget, or are we so provincial as to omit,
the name of Dame Vera Lynn, who did so much to lift the morale of those
throughout the British Empire during their darkest hours?
