Subject: Sexism vs Manners

Rick Keating wrote:

He's also right about the sexism. Whether it's a character on a
fictional program or a contestant on a game show, a woman was often
introduced by her husband's first name. As in "Mrs. Robert Jones."
(Hard to believe, but that attitude still exists. In the mid 1990s, I was
doing a story, and one woman I interviewed identified herself by her
husband's first name. I had to ask her for her own name. It was as if she
didn't have her own identity. Just a few weeks ago, someone came in to
the paper to put in an announcement, and the couple in the photo were
identified as (to make up a name) "Mr. and Mrs. Bob Smith.").

I think you are confusing sexism with the simple polite standards of
another age. Mrs. Jones would be known by her first name to friends and
family and others in her daily circle and she very much had her own
personality. It was considered proper and correct at that time to be
formally introduced as Mrs. Robert Jones or to be referred to as Mrs.
Jones when being addressed by those who were of only passing acquaintance.
It was a sign of respect to Mrs. Jones in a much more formal time and she
probably had an expectation of having it done and may well have been
shocked and scandalized had some stranger used her first name without her
permission.

As to your story about the interview I wonder if the lady in question was
actually offended by your presumption of asking her first name. I'm sure
she was too gracious to have pointed out to you how rude it was for such a
casual acquaintance to have been forward enough to demand she give it. She
most likely considered you "uncouth" and "forward". During the 1950s and
earlier times an interviewer would have been aware that he was not
considered to be in her inner circle and most likely would be viewed as
her social inferior unless he was a close personal friend.

I once, in a moment of crisis while working cattle as a teenager, called
my Great uncle by his given name in front of my Dad. Work actually stopped
while Dad chewed me out and explained that I was never to address him
without adding the honorific as it was a sign of respect and no matter if
I lived to be 80 he would always be superior to me due to the fact that he
was older and had earned the right to my respect through 60 years of prior
experiences. I never made the mistake again even after I was a married
adult and probably viewed by society as his so-called equal. My family was
lax in that I was allowed to address close family friends of my parents
and grandparents as "uncle" or "aunt" instead of the proper Mr. or Mrs. or
the even more formal sir and ma'am but I was never allowed to address them
without an honorific of some sort. They too expected this and didn't waste
time trying to get me to address them by their given names.

When interacting with older people one should at least be aware of the
proper rules of etiquette from the time when the person was raised so to
not possibly offend them through ignorance. How many subsequent interviews
are lost due to the interviewer being perceived as rude or pushy I wonder?
This is in no way a personal attack on Mr. Keating but just a simple
reminder for those graced with an opportunity to interact with one of the
few stars from the Golden Age that remain in the hope that we of the
younger generation may be viewed as having decent manners. It is so easy
in this day and age of text and e-mail to succumb to the expedient of
dropping formal address and polite manners on the rare occasion we
interact in person or over the phone with someone from an earlier
generation.

Subject: Command Performance

While researching another subject entirely, I came across an entry written
in 1945 about John Pearce, a career Australian Radio Announcer. It went
like this:

"While John was in Canada with the Air Force, he was the first and only
Australian to compere "Command Performance", from [removed], Calgary, Alta"

Any chance this episode has survived? I wish I knew more about how this
came about and if it is true in the first place. I read his autobiography
online a few years back and I don't remember it being mentioned in that.
Flicking through the copy I printed, there is very little mentioned about
his War service, apart from qualifying as a pilot in the [removed]

Subject: William Conrad

Hi, all. I recently got permission to do a book on William Conrad. Something I wanted to do 8 years
ago when I was doing Walter Tetley, Don Ameche, Daws Butler, Paul Frees and Mel Blanc at the

This will certainly be my last voice actor book to write. And I can use all the help I can get when

it comes to finding co-workers, finding interviews, photos, and rare wotnot. Please email me if
you can help. Of course you'll get credit in the book!
Thanks.

Subject: Racism and OTR

I'm a little late to this topic, because I've just had a big move and a new
job and am only now catching up on my digests.

Stephen Donovan asked an interesting question, one that I could discuss for
hours, but there's one point I'd like to specifically raise. I've discussed
this on the air a couple of times during [removed] broadcasts, and
I'd like to share it here.

There's a episode of Halls of Ivy that was done specifically for National
Brotherhood Week. In this episode, a student of Chinese descent is running
for class president, and her opponents launch a bitter racial campaign
against here. She leaves school, and Dr. Hall delivers a verbal smackdown to
the students.

Superman, as well, has done several anti-racist story arcs. Famous ones
include the Clan of the Fiery Cross story and the Knights of the White
Carnation story. In both cases, a local racist organization (obviously a
thinly disguised reference to the KKK) is harassing a local family. If I
remember correctly, the families in question were Asian and Hispanic.

I enjoy all of these episodes, and applaud their intent, but something jumps
out at me. In most of these anti-racist shows, they seem to go out of their
way to ignore what was the biggest racial issue in the United States, racism
and segregation against black Americans.

I can't think of a major network Brotherhood Week show or similar that has
racism against African-Americans as its focus. I've often wondered why that
is. My pet hypothesis is that while anti-racist shows focused on other races
was acceptable, condemning anti-black racism would be a bridge too far for
many listeners and affiliates, especially in the South. I wonder if the
network execs were afraid that Southern stations would jump ship if the shows
started condemning Jim Crow laws and the like.

I've never seen any memos or anything that would support my idea, but I've
often wondered about it.
