I'm going to be at the Sperdvac convention this coming weekend. I've
been listening to all of you digesters rave about the various
conventions for years now, so you've got my curiosity up and I'm going
to see if it's really that much fun (party time!).

The other reason that I'm going is because Hal Stone is going to be
there. I really want to see what the old geezer looks like. : )Keep in
mind that I also am an old geezer.(old geezers of the world unite!) I
see where he still has 3 copies of his book
left so I suppose he'll bring them with him and I suppose that means
I'll have to buy one.

Anyway I am looking forward to the weekend. Even my wife( not a OTR fan)
is going to be there.

Until I started listening to old time radio shows I always thought of Mel
Blanc as a voice of cartoon characters. Now I know that he is much more than
that and was a comic genius. Since listening to a lot of Jack Benny radio
shows I have found just how great a comedian he was.
Will never forget him announcing the train to Anaheim, Azusa and Cucamonga
and begging to someone please ride that train over the loudspeaker. The
interplay between him and Jack Benny was [removed] Benny was a good show
but his co-stars like Mel Blanco made it a great show.

On October 17th, Arthur Funk mentioned an appearance by Willard Waterman on
Rocky Jordan.

Willard Waterman was featured at least twice on Rocky Jordan: in the episode
"Strangers Three" on 12/5/48 as "Feydor Brahms" (my guess on the spelling),
and in "Pharaoh's Formula" (6/11/50) as "Willard B. Youngson." I am unaware
of the identity of the actress who Mr. Funk observed nearly flubbing her line
in the latter of these two episodes.

Sorry to hear about the death of the multi-talented Larry Dobkin. He had
made a number of appearances on the Lucy show and recorded the audio book
version of Jess Oppenheimer's book on the Lucy show "Laughs, [removed]
Lucy" a few years ago. The audio book is entitled "I Love Lucy: Behind the
Scenes" Dobkin's reading garnered great reviews.

Subject: Frank Buck Explorer Sun Watch

Stephen Jansen, speaking of radio premiums, noted,

The other is the (famous, right?) Frank Buck Explorer's Sun Watch. It
has a glow in the dark face, a mirrored back (for signalling, I'm sure),
and a compass. The hinged sundial pointer has two angled lines and is
stamped "35" and "45". My question is: what is the 35/45 for? I expect
it's to choose
the correct angle, but for what? East coast/west
coast/summer/winter/daylight savings? Was there an instruction sheet?

The pointer, technically known as a "gnomon," is used to cast the correct
shadow on the numbers of the dial. The 35 and 45 represent the parallels
of latitude that the user is closest to. Ideally, the gnomon of any
sundial should be oriented North, and should be parallel to the Earth's
axis. Unless you have a hinged gnomon, you get what's available when you
buy a sundial.

To get fully accurate time, a sundial needs proper alignment and some
means of determining corrections induced by the fact that the Earth's
orbit isn't perfectly circular (this fact results in the sun being "fast"
or "slow" with respect to an accurate clock, correctable through a table
or figure called "the equation of time"). Additionally, the fully
aligned sundial will show "Civil time," which is the time at a given
longitudinal spot rather than the time zone.

The Frank Buck Explorer's Sun Watch (which was offered both on Bring 'Em
Back Alive, Frank Buck's own show, and on Jack Armstrong) had a built-in
compass, which provides an indication of Magnetic North rather than True
North; so that's a further error. But the ten-degree difference in the
gnomon settings would help a kid from Minnesota getting too different a
reading from a kid in New Mexico.

I'm sure some sort of instruction sheet came with the Sun Watch, but all
one should need to know is what I've discussed.

I believe it was luminous for night-time use. :-)

If anyone knows where I can buy/trade any more
cassettes of "Backstage Wife", I'd appreciate hearing
from you. At first, I wasn't sure whether I'd like this program
or not, but the ones I have are very good. I realize they are
rare, but someone told me he thought there were bound to be
some of them floating around somewhere.

If anyone has this information, contact me off list at

Subject: FOTR Convention

I was very fortunate this year and was able to attend the Newark Convention.
I had a wonderful time and met many great folks including our own Charlie.
Everything was grand and there certainly was plenty to do. I simply don't
know how Jay does it. What an individual with so much energy.

I enjoyed the recreations and was glad to hear that Hal Stone is anxious to
break into other roles besides playing a teenager (digest #422), but, I must
say his performance in the Have Gun, Will travel epidode was nothing to crow
about. :)

I have been thinking of gettin a better one as this one does not produce a
very loud output.

None do. You might consider using some of the better in-ear
("earbud", noise-reducing) headsets, or buying an external amplifier.

Does anyone here know anything about a series called THE GREAT GUNNS? It's
a comedy about an over-the-top theatrical family. It was a summer
replacement on Mutual in 1941 that starred Bret Morrison and Barbara Luddy.
That's about all I know about it. It's not listed in Dunning, and according
to Hickerson no episodes of it have survived. I have the script for the
audition episode (which was for another network and has a different cast) and
at least that episode was written by Forrest Barnes. Does anyone have more
information that they can share about the series?

This morning on the radio there was a trivia question asked, in honor of
WOTW. What was the theme music for the Mercury Theatre of the Air?

answer - - - -

Theme from Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto #1. I knew the answer, but couldn't
get through on the line before someone else did. It was a nice prize package
too.

Subject: Re: MP3 boombox

A couple of issues ago I described a Sony MP3 boombox model incorrectly.
The model number is CFD-S20CP. It was pointed out to me that I referred
to it as a CFD-520CP. If you see one, you'll see why I made that error.

Also I negleted to mention that it has a sleep timer and a headphone
jack. There is no clock however.

Before I got this boombox I tried using small speakers hooked up to my
handheld MP3 player, but that means many cables and separate devices to
deal with. I prefer the one-piece advantage of the boombox.

I like mine so much I bought a second one for my office.

Once again I will state that I have no interest in Sony.

Michael
