Subject: Proliferating tenors

Larry Jordan ponders:

does anybody know of any other OTR tenors who are of particular
note? I think of Dennis Day on the "Jack Benny Show," of course --
but who else was a popular tenor in the "golden age" of radio?

Several come to mind: Frank Munn (singing star of multiple musical features
produced by Frank and Anne Hummert in the 1940s-50s, billed by announcers as
"the golden voice of radio"), Frank Parker ("America's great romantic tenor"
when singing for the Hummerts, better recalled as entertainer Arthur
Godfrey's tenor in the 1940s-50s), and several who had their own shows or
appeared regularly pitching a tune on various shows: Morton Downey, Lanny
Ross, Jack Smith, Eugene Conley, Placido Domingo, Lauritz Melchior, James
Melton, Jan Peerce, Brian Sullivan, Robert Rounseville, Franklyn Baur (first
permanent star of Voice of Firestone), Richard Crooks (his Firestone
successor).

See my book "Music Radio: The Great Performers and Programs of the 1920s
through Early 1960s" ([removed]) for names and biographies of
many more.

I was SO sorry to hear this. :(( I'm Sorry I Haven't a
Clue was/is one of the Best radio shows - ever. Humph
was a one of a kind, and he even said he owed his
delivery style to Jack Benny (which I can hear). The
man had natural charm and wit, and even though I love
the series, I hope it doesn't continue without him.
How could it?

Subject: WAR OF THE WORLDS TV VERSION

Alan Bell mentioned about the 1975 made for TV version of WOTW. The
1950's kinescope version has been available for awhile as well that was
on the anthology series Westinghouse Studio One. I found it well done
and highly enjoyable. And of course, it was done "live".

Subject: McLendon call of "shot heard 'round the world"

I was listening to a bit of Gordon McLendon's call of
the famous 1951 Giants-Dodgers playoff game (at
[removed]) under the assumption that it was a
recreation, as he was famous for that. I thought it
sounded amazingly real. Then I read a Wikepedia
article about the game and came across this passage:
"... McLendon's live broadcast features him commenting
more than once that the Polo Grounds was packed."
Now, of course, I know Wikepedia must be read with
great skepticism, but I wonder. Was McLendon actually
there? The article says that his Liberty broadcast was
nationwide, and it seems more than a little strange
that a national broadcast would be a recreation.
So, did it sound especially authentic because it
actually was?

Alan
