    Dick Backus asked

Can anyone tell me the title or date of the Richard Diamond episode
where real life wife (what a title for a soap!) June Allyson played the
client.

If its the one I'm thinking of its
   500614 Mrs X can't find her husband
BTW, there were various references to Allyson during the series.
One I recall was Diamond telling someone to go to the movies, "I hear
there's a June Allyson movie showing at (some theatre).
The person he tells this to asks, "Who's she?" :)

Subject: Mae West

1937 The Federal Communications Commission was a bit upset with NBC.
The FCC scolded the radio network for a skit that starred Mae West. The
satirical routine was based on the biblical tale of Adam and Eve but
West's "suggestive" reading was not to network standards. So, following
its scolding by the FCC, NBC banned Miss West from its airwaves for
several years. Even the mere mention of her name on NBC was a no-no, it
is said.

Mae West was obviously used as the scapegoat in the whole scandal. She
didn't write the skit, nor did she cast herself in the part of Eve. The
skit was written to depict Eve as the character that West always
portrayed, she was cast for that reason, and she portrayed that
character as expected. It probably was at least in part because she
was a woman, but in any event, she made a convenient scapegoat.

Listening to the skit today, it's hard to tell what was so scandalous
back then.

This Week's Classics & Curios Show:

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 149

CLASSICS & CURIOS: DREAMS & MOMENTS TO REMEMBER

Time for a reprise of a slightly edited episode 58, a Classics & Curios
tradition as Christmas comes into view and as the coming New Year begins
to remind us of some very special memories and dreams. Songs, of course,
usually play an important part to make them special, and on this edition
of Classics & Curios we'll listen to some wonderful songs that take us
back to wonderful moments that remain precious in our memories. Those
songs no doubt added unique joy and feeling to our lives long ago and
can do so again just by listening to them now.

The Four Lads start us on our dream and memory journey with their great
"Moments to Remember," and joining the journey are performers like Perry
Como, Andy Griffith, the Four Freshmen, the Pied Pipers, Doris Day and
Les Brown, and ("pretty") Kitty Kallen.

Along the way, Woody Herman shares the touching "A Soldier's Dream" (on
the battlefield), Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters sing "I Can Dream,
Can't I?" from Bing's radio show, and Bob Hope and Shirley Ross do
"Thanks for the Memory" from their film "The Big Broadcast of 1938."
Other songs include "Graduation Day," "My Dreams Are Getting Better All
the Time," "A Dreamer's Holiday," "Dream," "Happy Talk," "When You Wish
Upon a Star," and "Precious Memories."

The Statler Brothers give us a fun memory quiz as they ask "Do You
Remember These?" They want to know if you recall things like Captain
Midnight, Howdy Doody, Dixie Cup tops, sock hops, lemonade stands, white
bucks, peddle pushers, fender skirts, Cracker Jack prizes, "He's a real
gone cat," and "Only the Shadow knows." If you do remember those, you're
about my age -- or a "keenager," as Frankie Laine called us."

Finally, we end our journey with clips from the Guy Lombardo Show. Guy
introduces his brothers and a classic Lombardo medley which here
includes the songs "Shine on Harvest Moon," "Button Up Your Overcoat,"
"I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby," "My Gal Sal," and
"Everywhere You Go. New Years Eve isn't quite here, but the band
performs the Lombardo signature song "Auld Lang Syne."

Kitty Kallen closes the show to fadeout with a reprise of "Happy Talk"
from the broadway musical "South Pacific." Truly 'tis a season of happy
talk with a time for remembering, for making new memories, and for
dreaming new dreams.

German poet Goethe wrote, "Dream no small dreams, for they have no power
to move the hearts of men." Remembering [removed] Lewis' words that "You are
never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream," let us dream
of a world with hearts transformed by the Christ of Christmas. .

A week ago we posted the notice of MWOTRC's December issue of RADIO RECALL
and listed the contents as: 1) Article by Martin Grams, Jr. on the "Christmas
episodes" of the Death Valley Days radio series, 2) the background on the
Glenn Miller propaganda radio series to German troops, written by Lawrence
Kandrach, and 3) a piece by "Lefty" Anderson on Milwaukee's "Billie the
Brownie", which thrilled Midwestern kids in the 40s. Also there is 4) an
article by Sally Stephens on MWOTRC's re-creations performed live at a DC
Auditorium for over a thousand attendees, plus 5) Bert Rude's discussion of
the time that blind piano wizard and radio star, Alex Templeton, entertained
at Bert's elementary school in SD way back when. 6) Fred Berney reviews the
new "Vic & Sade" book by John Hetherington, and our editor details 7) the
collecting of maps and charts offered as radio premiums in the Golden Age.

Since we discussed the contents of this issue on the OTR Digest, we've had a
number of email requests for copies of this in PDF. As most of you know, only
current members of the Metro Washington OTR Club are entitled to copies of
our journal. However in the spirit of the Yuletide Season, we will send a
complementary PDF of this December issue to any Digester who emails our
editor <editor@[removed]; with "My Free Dec Issue" in the subject line. This
is being done, not only in the spirit of Christmas giving, but also as a
possible inducement to membership in our fine club. Our motto is "We're big
enough to serve you but still small enough to know you."

Happy Holidays to you [removed]
