Subject: Sondra Gair

Steve Darnell correctly points out that Sondra Gair (Chicago Theatre
on the Air, Meet Miss Sherlock, etc) died at age 70 in 1994.

More specifically she died of breast cancer on May 25, 1994. In her
later years she had become prominent in Chicago with a number of
successful local radio programs, one of the last of which was
"Midweek with Sondra Gair" which analyzed foreign news. She was
inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame and also received
the "Woman of Influence" Award by the Nat. Association of Jewish Women.

Two days after her death, Chicago public radio station WBEZ-FM went
silent for an entire hour in tribute to her. She was an alumni of
Northwestern University (a class-mate of Charlton Heston) and that
institution initiated an annual Sondra Gair Memorial journalism
lecture which featured well known guest speakers. Her son, Judd Rose,
died in 2000; he was a long time ABC employee and later a CNN
correspondent.

And for those who enjoy obscure trivia, there are only two episodes
of "Meet Miss Sherlock" in circulation and Gair plays the lead in
both. Monty Margetts actually had the role longer, but none of her
episodes survived.

Subject: Ozzie's Boys

I wonder how many of you noticed the conflicting info in this weeks listings
from Jerry Haendiges of Tom Heathwood's "Heritage Radio Theatre," and John
and Larry Gassman's "Same Time Station" The first date is a typo for 1949,
but even so, it still is a month off from the first program with Ozzie's rel
kids.

HERITAGE RADIO THEATRE -- ADVENTURES OF OZZIE& HARRIET (CBS) 4/24/44
2nd week in which David and Ricky played themselves on the program.
First was an Easter show the preceding week. David tries to impress a
girl. In memory of David Nelson who passed away January 12th.

 SAME TIME, SAME STATION
Next we hear an episode from the very successful radio series, "THE
ADVENTURES OF OZZIE AND HARRIET" From 03/06/49 Episode (187)
The Crystal Ball. We believe that this is the First appearance of
both David And Ricky Nelson in the show. They were both played by
other radio actors prior to this episode.

I haven't had a chance to check my R to R tapes of the original discs where I
had noted which 1949 episode was the first with David and Ricky but I think
it very well might be 3/6/49. This seems a little different from what I
remembered. I recalled it was only one scene, and some years later Ozzie
reprinted the script of that scene in his autobiography. If someone has
"Ozzie" handy, check out what he prints for the first program with the boys
and compare it with this episode.

Subject: Charlie McCarthy

1937 In an article published in Literary Digest, Edgar Bergen
mentioned that he made his dummy pal, Charlie McCarthy, the beneficiary
of a $10,000 trust fund ($147,835 in 2009 dollars) to keep him in
serviceable condition and repair.

I understanding that Charlie is at the Smithsonian now. I assume the
upkeep is paid for by his landlord. With that in mind I wonder where the
money
is now or did it go to the Smithsonian? The value of $10,000 invested in
1937 would probably be considerable now!

You would have to admit that doing this trust fund in 1937 was a great
promotional stunt too.
The creative talents of the PR people are to be admired.

I went to the often disparaged Wikipedia article on Charlie McCarthy. Is
it considered accurate?

Subject: Green Hornet, Lone Ranger, and Revisionism

Fass Martin notes,

One doesn't have to wait for the reviews, let alone go to see the
movies themselves, to know that these productions are not labors of
love in the slightest, created by people who personally have
experienced and appreciate the place of these characters and stories
in the history of American popular culture.

This attitude, though, is hardly new. Years ago, there was a Lone Ranger
film starring a previously unknown actor, Klinton Spilsbury, that was
reported to be really bad (I never went to see it). In the film, much of
the heritage/legend was thrown out (for example, silver bullets were used
in order to increase accuracy rather than the symbolic reason in the OTR
program.) In a similar vein, the editor of a book of new Captain
Midnight stories responded to a review that observed that the title
character of his book deviated sharply from the OTR show by saying,
somewhat dismissively, "This isn't your grandfather's Captain Midnight."
The problem with these later writers and producers is that they have
heard the names of the old characters and that they were popular, and
have decided that they can present a "more current" presentation of a
character than when it was first presented. I suspect that most such
folk have heard or otherwise researched the originals. (But then, even
the movie serials of The lone Ranger, The Green Hornet, and Captain
Midnight deviated from the programs, so revisionism is hardly new.)
One problem is that every generation confronts life freshly, and those
who aren't students of OTR or collect and listen to the old programs, the
deviation from tradition isn't evident, much less objectionable.

Subject: The Green Hornet Film

I have not seen the New Green Hornet film but I probably will. For fans of
radio show this movie appears to be a travesty and I can understand the
reaction but I have to ask did they really expect to see a slavish recreation
of a show that by today's standards might seem pretty hokey to the target
audience producers are aiming for? The success of the latest two Batman films
demonstrates that angst and darkness in superheroes is the way to go. The
Green Hornet of the old days was a black and white good guy, no grays were
allowed and in the old days that's how people wanted their heroes. Today such
a viewpoint is seen as simplistic and out of touch, and the more comedic
approach makes sense. The alternative was to make the Hornet a much darker
film and I have little doubt fans of the OTR show would have be just as
highly displeased.

The radio shows are by the standards of today G rated and to make a film that
adhered to the radio show's format to the nth degree would have meant for my
money making a kiddie picture. Some things don't translate well from the past
in their original form.

The producers, writers [removed] looked at was how will this movie make money .
Most of the target audience will know of the character, if they've ever heard
of him, through the Bruce Lee connection. The fans of the radio show aren't a
huge demographic when it comes to factoring in the "just how faithful do we
need to be to the tone of the old show" consideration.

Having said all of that I can honestly look forward to the the Disney
company's reworking of The Lone Ranger with terror. This character's back
story makes him ripe for the darker Batman treatment but from what I've read
it's going to be another comedy.

There I said and I'm glad

I liked the new film. Mainly because I don't remember the TV series and have
never listened to the radio series (comedy radio is my LOVE). I realize I
might be in the minority here because of that, but if you're like me, going
into the theatre with 0% expectations (a good habit to be in), then you could
enjoy the film. Especially the cool action scenes which are filmed smoothly,
not jerky, like the current fad. Not enough action for me, and some meanness
in the main character, but otherwise a good January release, a month known
for slipping the dogs out.

The Mel Blanc part of the subject line is separate. I'm winding up my Mel
Blanc biography (the credit list is twice as long as the body of the book),
and if anyone here could put me in contact with voice people who have worked
with Mel, please email me off list. I'm still seeking little essays for my
last Tribute chapter. I already have June Foray, Bob Bergen, Joe Alaskey,
Gary Owens, Stephen Cox (who also donated some pictures) and Pat Fraley. I
sure would like to get comments from Stan Freberg and Frank Welker, but they
are Hard to get to. Please help if you can!

Thanks.
