Subject: New Officers Elected
The following officers were just elected at the December meeting of the
Metropolitan Washington OTR Club, in the shadow of the Nation's Capitol:
President: Michael Hayde.
Michael is known to many Digesters who have enjoyed his presentations
at FOTR Convention in Newark, NJ and the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia
Convention in Aberdeen, MD. A dedicated researcher and scholar, he is
an expert on Superman, Grand Ol' Opry, and Dragnet, among others. His
highly acclaimed book, "My Name's Friday," is the best history of radio
and TV's "Dragnet" as well as the films of Jack Webb. Michael is now
working on a book on the radio career of Martin & Lewis.
Vice President: Maury Cagle
Maury's career includes years of experience with the Armed Forces Radio
Service (AFRS) in Germany plus a decade as a radio producer for the
[removed] Census Bureau. His OTR connection goes back many years to WW II
when his father was transferred to Fort Monmouth, NJ when Maury was 10
years old. His family moved into rental property, a coach house on the
estate of Tom Howard near Rumson, NJ. Having daily contact with the
leader of "It Pays to Be Ignorant" was a unique experience for the lad.
Treasurer: Lennell Herbert-Marshall
Lennell is a familiar face at FOTR Newark where she learned high
finance buying scads of materials in the dealers' rooms. Her collection
of "Amos and Andy" is second only to Elizabeth McLeod. In the past,
Lennell served as our club president for a decade, which made her the
first African-American woman to head up an OTR club in the [removed] A
retired security officer from a communications company, she and her
husband now take regular trips to dozens of nostalgia conventions
throughout North America.

Subject: RE: Attacking the Messenger
Jack French pointed out the doubting thomases who posted a skeptical posting
regarding someone's information. This, sadly, happens quite a lot in this
and any other hobby. I have often found that only one posting to answer a
question in detail is sufficient. If someone has evidence or paperwork in
hand to contradict a statement, then that sheds new light on the subject at
hand. Posting a reply to a question is honorable for the poster, because of
the time they take out of their busy schedule for what is obviously a
non-profit assistance.
I have met a few people at conventions who are experts at their specific
fields, and have told me that they hesitate posting on the Digest, even
offering assistance to the poster because of doubting thomases. A few have
told me that they e-mail only to the poster because they don't feel like
getting contradicted publicly. This is sad, but it happens often now.
I too receive a number of queries for assistance, most of them just
information related to old radio shows, but my schedule gets busy on and off
again and during my busy moments, I am unable to answer them. I too get
irked when someone asks for information, I e-mail or fax it to them, and
then get an e-mail telling me I am incorrect, but without anything to tell
me I am wrong (even when the information I send them came from someone
else's reference book or web-site).
Years ago at the Cincinnati OTR convention, one of the attendees at the con
struck me as odd. He had apparently purchased one of my books and brazenly,
in front of me, told me that his opinion of my book was crummy. His opinion
(like anyone else's can be accepted or not) but his personality was
arrogant. The old saying "arrogant people don't know they are" is proven
time and time again. If I stood in front of an author and purchased a book
of theirs and we got into a discussion, even if I felt their book was
crummy, I wouldn't be ignorant and tell them so in front of them. I'd tell
them it was good and leave it at that. It's like telling my wife when she
has something done to her hair that I prefer the old hair style. I lie and
keep her happy.
On the Digest, there will always be doubters, and those who prefer to
contradict just for the sake of contraditing but I doubt they are doing it
on purpose to harm someone else's reputation in public. People do make
mistakes (that's why there are erasers on pencils) but frankly, some people
post negative postings just because they don't want to accept the facts that
are posted. "Assumptions" are the root of all bad feelings and cause of
rumors.
If someone on the Digest gives a brief history about a radio program such as
BLACKHAWK and claims they even heard episodes on audio cassettes in their
collection, then I would take them for their word and I certainly would NOT
post something suggesting it was a "rumor" and contradict her just because I
have never ever heard an episode. Doubting thomases will be out there - but
a reminder that there is a difference between "assumptions" and "facts" help
prevent such confusing postings in the future. Documented facts are more
reliable than faded memories.
Good job, Irene.

Dear Jack (& gang-)
From: jack and cathy french <otrpiano@[removed];
I've been noticing an uncomfortable trend in Digest postings in which
an ernest question is asked, a factual answer is provided by a second
Digester, and then a third Digester pooh-poohs the entire answer.
In such a case, I agree - completely. Cyber-com is far from perfect; but I
always try to be as gracious to others as I expect them to be to me.
a Doubting Thomas
scoffed at her response ... and retorted: "I've heard the legend before,
but have seen NO proof: ads, pics, - and dare I ask? - TRANSCRIPTIONS?"
The name is "Craig," not Thomas; feel free to attack me directly. The
statement you qoute was a plain statement of fact, cotaining no malice.
...one would hope on this Digest at least, a reliable researcher would
be treated more fairly.
Exactly how is a statement of the Facts As They Stand unfair?
Jim Harmon, an esteemed OTR historian and author,
pointed out that not only had he heard the series as a kid, but also
gave us more specifics on the nature of the programs.
I consider Jim a friend, and his response was PRECISELY the kind that
advanced the topic down the court!
Art Chimes then cited Harrison Summers' exhaustive history of network
radio, confirming Irene's initial facts.
I recieved a kind not from Art off-list to that effect, which I much
appreciated.
As an ace OTR researcher, Irene Heinstein certainly needs no defense
from me, nor even from Jim Harmon or Art Chimes.
There's no defense needed, when no attack was made?
Her latest post, like Jim's was a helpful "keeper." (Thanks, Irene.)
Our Digest, unfortunately, is not the only place where this stuffiness
from the Unconvinced occurs.
I try to write clearly, which may seem formal (?) at times.
But I hope no one I've "spoken" with on this wonderful list or off, or in
person, as at FOTR, would find me "stuffy."
But instead of a "thank you", I usually
get an arrogant response from the requester, along the lines of "Oh yeah?
Well, that ain't the way I remember it."
I condemn such behavior, too.
And most generally see it among "Old Heads" in the field, who locked their
facts in amber years ago.
Irene, Jim, Art, Jack, et al: I meant no offense; as Abe Lincoln used to say,
"I never knowingly plant a thorn in another man's bosom."
May this holiday season be a time of Light to all,
-Craig Wichman

For the past couple of years, I have enjoyed reading, on almost a daily
basis, the comments of contributors to the 'Digest.' Two of my favorite
writers
are Jack French and Jim Harmon. I enjoy 'their words,' because, most likely,
I
can identify and agree with many of their comments; although, I think they're
both older than me. Okay, Jack, you're younger, but Jim's older than both
of us. teasing
I couldn't agree MORE with Jack's comments, regarding the radio series,
'Blackhawk' and the super effort put forth by credible researchers. For my
money
Jack is right on target. Sadly, many folks, ask a question of a legitimate
source and upon hearing 'the reply,' doubt it and so often question the
validity of the comment, let alone the source. HELLO. WHY ASK?
When I read the line from 'the doubting Thomas,' [removed]"the validity
of a Blackhawk radio series," I immediately [removed], just like Jim
Harmon, I listened to that show, too. I liked the program and ALWAYS
wondered why
it suddenly left radio. Hey, there's an assignment for a radio private
eyelash
or two.
I could tell, from Jack's comments, he was seething and upset, which is not
his usual style. Being involved presently, in research for my own book on
radio, I know how much time, sweat and effort goes into 'chasing down the
simplest facts for the sake of accuracy.
So, I for one, Mister Jack, applaud your [removed] don't let the
'doubting Thomas' ruin your [removed] both you and Jim, keep up the
excellent
work, and thanks for ALL your hard work that goes into the accuracy of your
research and writing.
Let's hope, the true spirit of the Christmas season, lives within our
hearts, all year long.
Merry Christmas to all, and let's all try and remember those two important
words of wisdom, spoken by our [removed]"please and thank you."
your pal, Joe Martelle
Mesa, Colorado
PS
Thanks to you, Charlie, for ALL your time and effort, in keeping this digest
rolling everyday.

Irene Heinstein wrote:
I dug in on this program and finally found some listings for "Blackhawk"
(listed as one word in the NY Times radio schedules). The ProQuest
Historical Papers database search failed in my search for "blackhawk" and
"black hawk" for the period in which the program was possibly on the air. I
searched both 1951 and 1952 and came up with nothing so I searched the "on
the radio" listings for that period (title of the NY Times radio listings)
and had to go through the listings day by day to find "Blackhawk". I
mention this because other researchers should know about the problem. I've
become suspicious that the search engine has changed in some way, but can't
figure out how that could happen. Since "Blackhawk" was clearly in the
listings a search should have brought up at least one or more links to the
program listing in "on the radio".
The way these searchable newspapers work is the reason, perhaps, that
"Blackhawk did not turn up in a search.
Basically, the newspaper microfilm is scanned and then turned into
editable text via OCR (optical character recognition). The OCR files are
linked to the picture of the page from the microfilm. The OCR files are
cleaned up a bit to hit most of the things people will search for--proper
names, headlines, etc. but they don't correct every word. This is why when
you do a search and you see an abstract there are often jumbled and
nonsensical icons instead of clear readable text surrounding your search
words. It is often necessary to be persistent and creative, as Irene was, in
ferreting out information when searching historic newspapers in line.
Proquest's clean up of the OCR files is especially "lazy," and I have
done multiple keyword searches for articles I know exist in Proquest covered
papers (trying to find the date of an article that I have in hand for
example, and searching on key names or headline words) and have only been
able to find them with creative searching.
