Subject: Scary shows

While growing up, there were three radio programs
that scared the bejabbers out of me (and my brother,
too, even though he was all of a year older). They
were "Zero Hour" on "Suspense," "Mars Is Heaven" on "X
Minus One," and "The Masks of Ashor" on "The Hall (or
was it Halls?) of Fantasy." I listened to "Zero Hour"
just today and the other two shows not long ago. I am
happy to report that "Zero Hour" and "Mars Is Heaven,"
both written by Ray Bradbury, were as chilling as
ever. "The Masks of Ashor," though, failed to stand
the test of time and my maturity, such as it is. Guess
the world only gives us a limited supply of people
with the genius of a Bradbury.
A question: Were "Zero Hour" and "Mars Is Heaven"
on other series besides "Suspense" and "X Minus One,"
respectively?

Michael -- When I met, and interviewed, George Seaton in 1951[that's when
I learned, in 1933 he was the first Lone Ranger, under his family name,
Stenius]. He was with his partner, producer, Bill Pearlberg. Along with
George and Bill were Bill Williams, and his lovely wife, Barbara Hale.
Bill was almost as 'pretty' as Barbara, and everything you could ask from
a big time Hollywood cowboy star. George, Barbara and I reunited in
1969, during the shooting of the original Airport, screenplay written,
and the film directed by Seaton, shot in Minneapolis because he 'knew'
there would be a blizzard in February [no fake snow for George]. Well,
that was the year we had no snow in the Twin Cities. In 1951 the
foursome were on a 'Movies Are Better Than Ever' promotional tour,
Hollywood having become very paranoid over the instant, and huge
popularity of television.

Subject: Whistler Show

I am trying to remember the name of a whistler program I heard years ago. It
concerns the main character who toward the end is walking home late at night
knowing full well his house is filling up with gas from the stove. He or she
wants to arrive too late to turn it off thereby ensuring their spouse
subcumbs to this "accident". Thats the best recollection I have of it and it
has been many years since I heard it. Any help with the title and airdate
would be appreciated.

Hi Everybody,

I am looking for some bio information on Pat Marshall who was a singer in
the movies, then she married Larry Gelbart. Does any body have an idea if
she appeared on any radio shows? If some one can find a little more bio on
her that would be great too. I am planning to call her to find out if she
able to be at the SPERDVAC convention. Her husband Larry has a good back
ground writing in radio for example, Danny Thomas, Jack Paar, Duffy,s
Tavern, and for Bob Hope from 1948 to 1951, Larry wrote TV show Mash, then
George Burns movie, and Broadway. Any help would be helpful,

Hi Everybody,

I got a call from Art Linkleter who is going to come over to Frank Bresee
studio and record an interview for Yesterday USA. I am trying to think what
so to give Art when he comes over middle of next months. I know he did
Screen Guild 110-5-50, Bing Crosby special in 1951, the last House part is
around from 1970, and SPErDVAC has some People Are Funny. Does any one know
what out there in the hobby that I can give you Art and lose for interview.
Bryan was so kind in his last post about the week end highlight on Yesterday
USA of interviews and topics. Does any one have a large collection os the
KRLA Same Time Same Station interviews done in 1972, 1973, and 1974. I have
around 18 and I hope some one have more. I would like to feature them on
the week end line up too. Take care,

Walden

Since your event is in Newark NJ, I wonder if any of your afficianadoes of old
time radio would be aware of the famous country music program "Home Town
Frolic"? It was braodcast out of Newark on [removed] radio from the 40's almost to
1960, host Don Larkin and Lyle Reed. Don is still around in Arizona, 88 years
old, healthy but losing the memory now. I would be very grateful to anyone
that could provide a transcription of this show, and I am aware of others in
the broadcast realm that are also looking for a segment. Perhaps at your next
convention someone will have knowledge of this seminal and important program.
Thank you, R. Freiday 7 Jones Lane, Long Valley Nj 07853 908 876 3716

The question was asked

And, after their
Baby Dumpling daughter grew up, what was her character's name on the
show?"

First of all, the Baby Dumpling character was the nick-name of the young
Alexander. When Blondie and Dagwood's daughter was born, she was named
Cookie, by a street cop, when he pulled the family over speeding on their way
home. That was from the movie "Blondie's Blessed Event." It was decided in
that film to have Alexander to go by his birth name. It is also sad in a way.
Because if any of you have seen the films you know that Baby Dumpling and
Daisy always stole the early films. I do not know what the puppy's names were.

Good news and bad news from today's media. First, Jinx Falkenberg has died
and was given a great send-off by David Hinckley of the New York Daily News.

Also, I ran across this profile of Larry Gelbart on Time Magazine's website.
He is still alive and working and doing great. The article mentions how he
got his start as a radio writer.

If we're lucky, our own Jay Hickerson may be joining Gelbart on that site,
as he was interviewed for an article about seniors and their "hobbies" for
the magazine a few weeks ago and the article is due out in September.

I recently heard that Mr. Keene, Tracer of Lost Persons used to exist as a
serial, and that in the serial version he actually traced lost persons (the
few episodes I've heard have been self contained and involved murders).

Can anyone give me details on the serial version, such as how many episodes
were in a story line? And are any episodes available?

Thanks!

I took a look at the article Sean Dougherty linked
to recently and had to smile when I read this:

"On television, situation comedies such as Leave it to
Beaver, Father Knows Best, and Ozzie and Harriet
presented a positive and, yes, somewhat idealized view
of family life, but there were countless families
then, and still are now, who live pretty much as these

I was reminded of an exchange my irate sister once
had with my mother:

Sis: Why isn't our family like the ones on TV?

Mom: Nobody's family is like the ones on TV.

Thanks for the memory,
