Subject: Re: orchestra vs. organ
Stereo vs Mono? Orchestra vs Organ?
This line of inquiry, which strayed from OTR, piqued my curiosity. I'm
a theatre organist and devotee of the Mighty Wurlitzer. During silent
film days, there was a similar question of piano vs. organ vs. full
orchestra accompaniment. But in the pre-Hammond days (before ca.
1935), radio studios often had pipe organs installed and voiced for
their confined studio space. Many--perhaps most--of you already know
that Gaylord Carter (the king of silent film accompaniment) played
"The Perfect Song" theme for Amos and Andy, and Fats Waller played for
WLW's Moon River. Joe Kearns bought the "Amos and Andy" organ for his
home in Hollywood. Again, this may be common knowledge on the group,
but I remember the organ fondly, as I played it once when I was 14, by
which time Bob Carsons owned the home. It was a favorite recording
instrument for theatre organists seeking an intimate sound.
Anyway, I have the definitive book THE WURLITZER PIPE ORGAN: AN
ILLUSTRATED HISTORY, which includes info on every Wurlitzer ever
built. If anyone is curious and wants info on their favorite studio
Wurli, let me know and I'll try to find it. Or if you remember a
favorite organist ([removed], Korla Pandit, who died not that long ago),
I'd love to hear what you liked about him or her. Rosa Rio, who turns
107 on June 2, is still active; you can see her playing on YouTube!

Subject: RE: Hindenberg Crash
Bill Harris has kindly repeated the old saw that was told by [removed] Schecter in
his interesting book "I Live On Air".
Morrison was making a recording of the Hindenberg landing for
the WLS Chicago sound effects and transcription library.
That is so far from the truth that it is laughable. Schecter either did not
know what he is talking about or else he is covering up for his department's
rejection of Herb Morrison's offer of help and an early on-the-scene report,
and how he and his staff almost screwed up such an important story. If
Morrison was there to record sound effects WHY WAS HE DOING SO MUCH
TALKING????????????? And actually, if Morrison and Nielson were there to
record sound effects, why was an announcer needed?? Charlie, the engineer,
could have done it all by himself.
Bill or Abe goes on:
He certainly was not there to make a recording for news broadcast,
as NBC had a rule against using recordings for such broadcast",
Morrison was not an employee of NBC, he worked for the independently owned
affiliated station WLS. Non-owned and operated stations did not have any
rules against the use of recordings, only the network had that asinine rule.
Again continuing from the quote
and the landing of the Hindenberg was not particularly a news worthy
event, as it had landed in the [removed] other times before.
This was the first landing of the second season of flights, and as Morrison's
friend Bill Jaker has already posted numerous times, Morrison was a pilot and
an expert in the field of avaition. There was a chance that WLS might have
been able to sell a series to American Airlines that might have included
interviews with passengers much like the newsreels interviewed celebrities on
arriving on ocean liners. Morrison was doing this recording as a potential
audition.
No, Abe Schector's fairy-tale is not worthy of him. But thanks for Bill
alerting us to this fable and giving us a chance to hopefully put it to
a final and well deserved rest.
