Brian Betsworth asked about Leiningen Vs the Ants. These are the ones I
have from Escape. The difficulty when you go looking is that there are a
lot of differences between the logs for this series and many are incorrectly
identified as East or West coast and also variences of dates. I chose to
follow Frank's log for this series Based on advice from other collectors of
Escape. I am only missing 3 episodes from the series now and all 3
storylines are actually covered on the opposite coast or different date, but
it is nice to finish the collection :)

Also since Jughead (Hal) was indicating there are Archie episodes in
circulation, though for some reason there isn't a book, I thought I would
list the ones I have.

I must admit to enjoying the show along with my son, so if anybody has other
episodes, I would be interested in listening. Hey Hal, if you could date
those last four episodes for me it would be great :)

I hope you will be including a log of all the episodes for the show at the
back of your book, just for the otr people. Not that I want to add to your
workload and elay the book any further.

Gee Whiz! Another fan heard from. :)

With the permission of one of the actors (Hal), and with the help of a
researcher (maybe Elizabeth or some other fine person here) is there any
chance of the Library of Congress releasing them?

There certainly is, Gad. (May I call you by your first name?)

Again (according to Elizabeth's posting on the subject a long time ago)....
all that would be necessary is to get permission from NBC, (and undoubtedly,
Archie Comic Publications as well), who granted the original "Live"
programming rights to NBC ..... then spend a small fortune to have the
Library of Congress make copies. And who knows what "cut" NBC or Archie
Comic Publications might want in return for granting rights to duplicate the
programs that would be sold to the OTR gang. (Sigh)

Then too, my NBC Contracts stipulated that NBC could ONLY use recordings of
the program for Publicity & Promotional purposes in hopes of finding a
sponsor. So if we also needed my permission to get the LOC to release the
material, (Hmmm? what to charge?) The costs would undoubtedly be
astronomical! :)

However, if all the 12 fans of the show bought the entire series, (And not
"bootlegged" copies and traded with each other for free), it might be

Someone asked:

I think it's going to take a bit more than that. I am not sure if the
rights are still owned by NBC or Archie Comics Publications, Inc. but I
suspect it is not the actors who hold those rights. Your best bet is to
call the LOC and ask them. They will tell you whose permission you need to
get copies made. Then be prepared to pay a premium cost for copies. The LOC
does not simply release these for publication and it will take the
permission and a bit of money to get them all out.
And this would be generally for the purposes of licensing them for
reproduction.

As much as I'd love to see our buddy Hal get in on this action, I doubt he
could be much help. Hal, did your contract specify you to have some right
to some continued royalty?

BTW, looking forward to seeing you in Cincy this year!

Ahhh, the wonders of the printed word as opposed to the spoken.
Those of us who have seen Jean Shepherd's name in print know of the
unusual spelling of his first name but it is still misspelled as one of your
readers has shown me again.
Reminds me of the other problem facing radio people of which I was one
during the late 50's and 60's.
The fact that we all assign a "Face" and demeanor to those we hear on the
air, then when we meet them the dissimilarity can be quite startling.
It got so bad for me that when I was doing my Top-40 show in major cities
and the back door light would go off, I knew there were fans there, perhaps
even a bevy of beauties.
But I knew better than to answer it as "myself."
I had been horrified to see major disappointment on lovely faces so many
times that now I enjoyed opening the door, dressed in ghastly attire and
changing my voice to let them know I was the engineer or janitor and that the
guy the really wanted to see allowed no visitors.
The sight of them looking over my shoulder to try to get a glimpse of the
"me" they heard on the air is still with me.
The "magic" of radio also includes the slight disappointment that comes
from learning how the "trick" is done.
    The Shadow knows.

are 16 Episodes available for collectors. SIDE NOTE: The show was a 15minute
format on Mutual beginning on 5/31/'43, with Jack Grimes (of 'Let's Pretend'
fame) as Archie. It went to a 30 minute format Saturday afternoon program in
1945. (Is this correct, Hal?, if not blame it on Jon Swartz!)

I'm normally a fairly docile fellow but I'm beginning to grow impatient
with the fact that not only have we missed Autumn and Winter quarterly
issues of one of the best publications in the hobby, the NARA [North
American Radio Archives] News, former editor Jim Snyder recalled to me
the other day that "it has now been 8 months with nothing from NARA." So
what are our $20 dues purchasing? As there are no meetings of the
organization and services of the libraries aren't required, I'm
pondering: What have I bought this past year?

To my knowledge no one has been announced as successor-editor which
undoubtedly indicates there will be no Spring issue (due within a month)
and worse--leadership has been silent to the membership (a large host of
whom read this digest) in regard to future plans, explanations of what
has transpired and in offering extensions of memberships for dues paid
with partial services rendered. Time was NARA News at least equaled and
possibly surpassed anything offered by our very finest club publications.
No more. There isn't a product to compare. I'm surprised there hasn't
been a greater hue and cry about it. Am I alone in missing NARA? Has it
died and we simply haven't acknowledged the fact? If so, consider me
particularly saddened by its demise.

One of the episodes of TBS which I have on tape features the tale of perhaps
the only Pulitzer prize the Hartford (Conn.) Courant ever won. It told the
story of a boarding-house keeper who specialized in knocking off lonely old
men for their annuities. What the program didn't tell the listeners was
that (1) this event took place a half-century before the broadcast and (2)
it had been featured at least ten years earlier on Broadway in a play called
Arsenic and Old Lace, which was also a very successful motion picture.
Were all of the TBS stories as ancient history as this one? Were the show's
producers worried about legal action or something if they dealt with more
current crimes?
