From These Were The Days --
6/1
1936 - The Lux Radio Theater moved from New York City to Hollywood.
Cecil B. DeMille, the program's host on the NBC Blue network, introduced
Clark Gable and Marlene Dietrich in The Legionnaire and the Lady.
6/2
1937 - The Fabulous Dr. Tweedy was broadcast on NBC for the first time.
Frank Morgan starred as the absent-minded Dr. Tweedy.
1937 - CBS presented the first broadcast of Second Husband. The show
continued on the air until 1946.
6/3
1946 - Mutual debuted The Casebook of Gregory Hood, the summer
replacement for Sherlock Holmes. The mystery series became a regular
weekly program in the fall of 1946.
1949 - Dragnet was heard for the first time on NBC.
6/4
1944 - Leonidas Witherall was first broadcast on the Mutual Broadcasting
System. Witherall was a detective who looked just like William Shakespeare.
6/6
1938 - Stella Dallas was presented for the first time on the NBC Red
network. The serial was "the true to life story of mother love and
sacrifice." Stella Dallas continued to do this and so much more until 1955.
1944 - CBS radio saluted America's war doctors with The Doctor Fights,
presented for the first time this day.
6/7
1945 - The NBC program The Adventures of Topper was heard for the first
time.
1955 - NBC presented The Lux Radio Theatre for the final time. The
program had aired for 21 years.

05-31-1908 - Don Ameche - Kenosha, WI - d. 12-6-1993 actor, singer: John
Bickerson "Bickersons"; Captain Hughes "Jack Armstrong"
Didn't Don Ameche also invent the telephone?

"Sorry, Miss Arlene"
writes our beloved colleague in all things ethereal, Derek Tague.
With no disrespect to Arlene McQuade or "our own" Osborne, I simply can't
hear the epithet "Miss Arlene" without thinking of John Daly. Does anybody
share that instant (and incredibly wonderful) memory?
Anyone who loved the show, by the way, will savor producer Gil Fates' volume
of the same name, published in 1978 by Prentice-Hall.

Subject: Chester Proudfoot, Deputy?
It is widely believed that Chester Wesley Proudfoot (played by Parley
Baer) was merely Marshal Matt Dillion's "reliable non-thinker" (as
Baer described him) on Gunsmoke. In is also widely believed Chester
was not Dillion's deputy, because in at least one case Dillion
specifically said he wasn't.
Yet, I was surprised to hear a Gunsmoke in which Dillon introduced
Chester AS his deputy. I have a bet with Greg Bell (RadioClassics,
etc.) about this, but can't refind the show in question in my
collection. Does anyone know which episode this might have been or
could at least confirm my recollection?
Lastly, I hope that Bill, Parley, Georgia, Howard, and everyone
involved in the program are somehow aware of the pleasure the program
still brings so many listeners after so many years.
Thanks!
David Coursey

Hello, digesters.
I am looking for ANY radio versions of Mark Twain's, "The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer". Can anyone help me in my quest? I would also be curious to hear any
radio biographies of Twain or stories in which he appears as a character. All
assistance is appreciated, folks.
Thanks,
R. Story
