Dear Michael-
Thanks for the heads-up; I'm always interested in the Medium crossing over.
But here follows a big "IMHO" from this born and bred Midwesterner:
I've had diminished respect for Altman ever since the interview in which he
bragged that he liked to make sure he was really drunk before he headed into
the editing room (though I guess that goes some ways toward explaining why
I'd always found his films [removed])
As for Keillor, I love the fact that he still uses radio for something other
than Top 40 and Political Talk- not to mention, in the only example of this
that Royal NPR stoops to carry. But I was put off by the essay a while back
where he explained the Camp sketches on his variety show by saying that that
was the only way Radio Drama could work for a modern audience. Even with
this,
I keep giving PHC chance after chance; but to me, there's a worse problem:
Garrison himself has gotten so painfully pretentious, and fatally in love
with
the sound of his own voice, that it sinks the whole ship.
All IMHO.
Best,
-Craig

Rodney Bowcock correctly laments
If
the Cincinnati convention ceases to exist, we'll see 1/3rd of the annual
old-time radio conventions in the country come to an end, and that would be
a real shame.
Sad, but very true! After dropping the ball in 2005, this year is already a
month and a half old, and not a word from the SPERDVAC board about a 2006
Convention! In order to reserve a hotel, you need to start about 12 months
before the fact because weekend spaces are renewed yearly and spaces get
filled up fast. SPERDVAC used to be one of the top two OTR organizations,
before REPS existed. Bobb Lynes organizes and holds meetings about OTR for
SPERDVAC, but except for his efforts, SPERDVAC has become an organization
whose sole purpose is to rent audio and printed materials. If that were not
bad enough, SPERDVAC's website had a virus! What a shame!
Now to Cincinnati: I sometimes am on the computer in the wee hours, when it
is not appropriate to call friends for information. Last night I searched
in vain for the name of the Cincinnati OTR organization, and if I had found
it, I would have looked for a website. Where is the publicity for the
Cincinnati Convention? Why is it the best kept secret? Under what name is
their
their website?

Subject: Rochester show
I asked this question once before, but never received an answer. I still
don't know any more than before, so I thought I would try again. I recently
heard a few episodes of a show called "The Rochester Show" and also referred
to as "The Private Life of Rochester", starring Eddie Anderson. A couple of
the shows were sponsored by Franco-American spaghetti. The show was funny
and, of course, made frequent references to his cheap boss.
I can't find any reference in Dunning's book about this show. Does anyone
know how long it lasted, and what year(s) it was on?
Thanks for any information you can provide.

In a recent episode of The Shadow on XM, a criminal while awaiting
execution asked his brother, who was trained as a sniper in the army
and who emerged from WWII shell shocked, to assassinate those
responsible for his conviction.
The brother kills several before the Shadow can stop him. Twice
during the show The Shadow expressed empathy for the assassin because
he was trained as a killer in the army and not properly assimilated
back into society.
Was such asides by the Shadow common on this program and was the
concern expressed by the Shadow an issue following the war?

It is neither obscure nor invisible, when you search under the complete
title.
Dunning does have a citation for it, as does Goldin. In Jay
Hickerson's omnibus, "3rd Revised Ultimate History", he lists the show
as airing on Mutual from Jan 49 to Nov 49, but not in all regions. (It
was not in NYC area, for example.) There are three surviving episodes
of this 15 minute kids adventure show, which had Gene Autry's horse in
it, but not Gene.

There are about 25 surviving episodes of this show. It was on the air
fairly regularly from 1939 to 1975, except during WW II. It was
brought back in 1992 and aired regionally for a few years.
Most OTR dealers have some copies so finding it can't be that tough.

Subject: Cincinnati Convention
Rodney had some good points about the Cincy convention. To add my own two
cents:
The hobby of OTR is made up (in my opinion) of four factors.
1. Periodicals (magazine and newsletters)
2. OTR Clubs with monthly meetings
3. Dealers who sell and collectors who collect
4. Annual Conventions
If any of these four factions suffer, so does the hobby. If Cincy is no
more, a big part of the hobby goes away. There has been a lot of conflict
behind the scenes with the planning of some OTR conventions and this does
effect the way conventions are run. I won't go into details but a LOT of
people talk about how stupid issues and opinions (the conflict) behind the
scenes effects conventions and it's sad. It really is sad. As a friend
once told me, "this is a hobby, not a religion."
On the plus side, Burchett and Newman who put the Cincy con together have
done a superb job with the events, hotel arrangements, etc. There hasn't
been any conflict and I am happy to say that both Bobs have stated to me
that there isn't a "conflict" causing the possible end of the Cincy con -
it's just that the attendance is dropping, it costs money to put a show on,
and the fear that they will take a financial loss with future cons if the
attendance keeps dropping is something they simply cannot handle. For their
reasons i can see they are justified. But if you are within driving
distance of the Cincinnati OTR convention and can afford even one afternoon,
please attend. Meeting the people whose names appear on the postings on
this Digest is a great way of putting a face to the e-mails. Everyone is
just as friendly as the postings on the Digest and I have yet to meet anyone
who hasn't made a return visit after checking out a convention even once.

Subject: The Lone Ranger's Disguise, etc.
I'm a brand new fan of the Lone Ranger and am having a
ball listening to the episodes from 1938. I sampled a
variety of westerns before deciding to purchase a set
of LR mp3s and haven't been disappointed in the least!
It's such a skillfully written show.
I've gotten some great laughs out of a few things that
probably weren't meant for that. It seems like the
Lone Ranger and Tonto are constantly hunched outside
people's windows - or behind some scrub brush -
eavesdropping: "Did you hear that, Tonto?" And I can't
help but wonder if White Feller had to be dispensed
with becuase something wasn't quite right about a
Native American character holding the reins on a
"white feller."
One pair of characters keeps popping up from time to
[removed] a pair of Civil War veterans named Hacksaw
Hastings and Bolivar Bates. Can any of you LR experts
tell me if they'll continue to show up post-1938? Are
there any other recurring characters that I'll be
meeting soon? I think Chief Thunder Cloud has shown up
a few times, too.
What kind of disguise does the Lone Ranger use when
he's "in town"? Does he wear a beard? A mustache? At
first I thought he must be made up or something, but
he remarked in a recent episode that he was "taking
his disguise off" after leaving town. Any ideas?
