CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 39
THE BROWSERS: "I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT" (with) "A DING DONG DADDY
FROM DUMAS"
Once again it's the "Ding Dong Daddy" Browsers from their "Whine Cellar"
where you can hear great music and match wits with big band experts.
This show has a super lineup of performers and recordings from "A" for
Andrews to "S" for Sinatra, as the Andrews Sisters sing "Hold Tight,"
and Frank Sinatra croons "The Coffee Song." In between Julie Andrews
performs "I Could Have Danced All Night," and swinging across the stage
comes "I'm a Ding Dong Daddy from Dumas." More tunes and artists include
"Ain't She Sweet" from Harry James, "Paper Doll" from the Mills
Brothers," 1939's "All the Things You Are" from Helen Forrest and Artie
Shaw, and "Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me" from Benny Goodman. Also
showcased are Tommy Dorsey's classic "Marie," Vic Damone's "If I Loved
You," and tunes like "Wang Wang Blues," "Stormy Weather," and "Japanese
Sandman," which closes the show. Big band trivia questions that might
stump you include, "What recording did the Andrews Sisters cut with Al
Jolsson?" Maybe you know what drummer "glitsch" got recorded on a Glenn
Miller tune and the name of the song. Or maybe you recall which famous
band leader would not allow a "ghost" band to carry on. And an unlikely
stumper: "Name several tunes with the initial letter "M" in the title as
in Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade!" All in all, more great and
joyful music from the Browsers. And as we tune in this show, I think of
a poetic plea from Edgar Guest that directs us to pursue positive songs
of joy that reflect choices of hope and heaven. Guest wrote, "Songs of
rejoicin' ... O sing them again ... of hope in the future, of heaven the
goal ... songs of rejoicin' that strengthen the soul." Just Folks
Thanks once more to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting the
original studio tape for highest quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time
Episode 3
It's Make Believe Ballroom Time is in Chicago for this episode. We are
telling the story of Cleo Brown, stride pianist and vocalist, who had a
very limited recording history but a wonderful lifetime of music
performances. She reached National acclaim. Then were telling the story
of the United States in the mid-1930's with facts and statistics. Later
we pass on the history of the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago and listen to
the Ted Weems Orchestra broadcasting live from there with his great
vocalist Perry Como and his whistler Elmo Tanner. Another remote
broadcast of the Dich Jergends Orchestra.
