Subject: Early days of OTR catalogs
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I was thinking lately about how different OTR is today and? how starting out
in the hobby has changed from what it was when i started in the late 1980's.
I began with the typical library copy of a few old shows on cassette and then
I searched for a wayto buy more shows. I did a little checking and I
discovered a few dealers and the world of old time radio opened up with a
bang. The catalogs I discovered were those of Carl Froelich (found in the
Good old Days magazine) and the Radio Vault in [removed] remember the wait
between orders, and the temptation to buy the many titles, most of which I
never had heard. I lay in bed reading their catalogs over and over, planning
my shopping list ....I cherish the day I discovered Vic and Sade and I still
have the Voice of Firestone collection i purchased from Froelich, and many
many more of the first cassettes that I [removed] company had it's own
distinctive cassette and cover. Today the shows are on the internet and
available in large numbers and for free, so starting out must be very
different.
These are pleasant memories and I would like to hear your stories. What
companies did you deal with, are they around today, do you still have some of
the tapes you ordered?? What were the first titles you were attracted to and
why. Eventually I discovered reel-to-reel and McCoys and joined the Friends
of Old Time Radio and the shows kept coming on a regular basis. If you prefer
to tell your stories in private feel free to email me offline. As I say, I
have many pleasant memories of those first listening days and i would be
curious to hear similiar recollections.

Subject: When Radio Was
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
In response to an earlier comment on When Radio Was, I enjoy the show,
though there are some details that an OTR buff could complain about.
Host Greg Bell does occasionally mispronounce names but he often provides
some interesting insights. For example, I appreciated Mr. Bell pointing out
that the announcer for an episode of Casey Crime Photographer was Harry
Morgan.
The episode titles of all WRW broadcasts are listed on the Radio Spirits
website. The site can also be used to contact the show. Several months ago, I
sent a complaint when the program aired two half-hour shows that were edited
to
fit the program's time slot. I received a gracious reply that the situation
was an aberration caused by the changes going on at Radio Spirits and would
not be repeated. The narrative portion of an OTR program would not be cut.
Of course, the host of WRW has a very limited role because of the program's
limited time. The stars of the program are those wonderful OTR programs and
the stars do just fine.

Subject: The Evaporated Clue Matter
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I just returned from a cruise to Alaska. For previous trips, I used a portable
CD player and 6 MP3 Cds to enjoy my OTR pastime. This time, I joined the
modern generation by loading Frontier Gentleman, Have Gun, Will Travel,
Phillip Marlowe and Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar into an Apple iPod Nano.
While our cruise ship was docked in Juneau, Alaska, I listened to Yours Truly,
Johnny Dollar's "The Evaporated Clue Matter" originally broadcast 1960-01-10.
Johnny is investigating the death of a wealthy recluse with a $200,000 life
insurance policy. The Chief Suspect is his Grandson, sole heir and life
insurance beneficiary. The Suspect's alibi: He was in Juneau, Alaska when his
Grandfather died.
Johnny enters $[removed] round trip plane ticket to Juneau, Alaska in his expense
account. When he arrives in Juneau, it suddenly dawns on him that he didn't
bring a photo of the suspect nor fingerprints. He registers at the hotel where
the suspect stayed; checks the hotel registry to find the suspect's name and
dates he was there.
Johnny has dinner in the hotel dining room. Half way through dinner, it
suddenly dawns on him that it was probably an accomplice in Juneau. He returns
to New York City, and arranges to interview the suspect with Lt. Randy Singer
present. Johnny asks the suspect: "What hotel did you stay at? Did you eat in
the hotel dining room? Did you have coffee with your meals? Did you have cream
and sugar in your coffee?" When the suspect answers yes to the cream and sugar
question, Johnny says, "You're a Liar! It wasn't you in Alaska, it was your
accomplice because if you had been there you would know that a can of
evaporated milk sits on every table in the dining room to be used in coffee!"
Where upon, the suspect confessed that he killed his uncle.

Subject: What is FOTR???
You know you've had too much old-time radio on the mind when . . .
Attending a science-fiction convention for a brief spell this past weekend a
teenager walked past me
wearing a t-shirt that said F O T R on the back of the shirt. Naturally, my
first thought
was Friends of Old-Time Radio!! And then I saw the front of the shirt that
spelled out,
"Fellowship Of The Ring" followed by The Lord of the Rings movie logo.
Maybe I should have told the kid that there was also a radio drama adapted
from the novels . . .
