Chris Werner wondered:
Does anyone know the date of the first broadcast of
World News Today?
As I recall "World News Today" was a sponsored news program by Admiral. The
earliest I have seen it in any list (not necessarily circulated) was
October 11, 1942. I believe one source, the Milo Ryan Phonoarchives lists
the first one for that date too - but that is based upon their archives.
My experience is that some of these news programs came and went depending
upon need and sponsorship. There was a "World News Tonight" also which I
haven't heard that could have been sponsored too. It was from pre-1942 and
may have disappeared under that title by 1942.

Wanted to put an early two cents in thanking Bob Burchett, Bob Newman and
every one involved in putting together the Cincy Convention this year.
It seemed to me to be a good turnout and with the additional presence of
Will Hutchins and Esther Geddes McVey along with Bob Hastings and the
indomitable Hal Stone and Rosemary Rice, it was most enjoyable.
Some good recreations, though my favorite this year was probably Will as
Britt Ponset in "The Six Shooter."

I used to listen daily in this order, i think: sea hound, terry and the
pirates, dick tracy, hop harrigan, and jack armstrong. These were my very own
favorites. Could you comment on the sea hound for us bob, sharing your
experiences
and info about the program in general? It was a great serial, imo, but i have
been unable to find more than a couple of the program as otr. Are more
available or will be available in the future? The other serials i mentioned
have a
pretty fair # of episodes floating around, but not the sea hound? Btw, i do
have
the movie serial from the forties or fifties starring buster crabb, and
although it is pretty good, the otr version is the one that brings back the
memories of jerry and captain silver.

I did some substitute teaching in rural southern Ohio a few years ago.
During lunch duty at one high school, I came upon a table at which was
seated a strangely-dressed group of boys. They all wore large brown work
jackets made by the Carhart company. Upon these were written various
expressions. So I told them that during the 1920's, there was a similar
custom among college students, thus demonstrating that fads tend to repeat
over time.
[They were not at all amused. I was tersely told by other teachers that
this group considered themselves alienated from society and was thus to be
left strictly alone. I always wondered what happened to them: the Columbine
High School massacre occurred shortly afterward. The perpetrators belonged
to a similar group that wore black coats.]

Hi Gang:
Yes, another Cincinnati OTR convention has lapsed and I can safely say
it was the best OTR convention I NEVER attended. Let me explain:
Everybody's favourite young Kubelskyan, Karen Hughes (no, not the
political one that works for the President) took full advantage of free
weekend minutes on her cell-phone and called me Saturday night after the
banquet to give me a full report on the proceedings. One by one, she handed
the phone over to what she described as a line of folks eager to speak with
your (trying-to-be-) humble correspondent.
She later told me her dad Prof. Dan had made an on-mike announcement for
anybody wanting to speak with me. And, boy!, was I absolutely floored. I never
realised how popular I was.
First was convention organiser Bob Burchett. It always amazes me how he
always has time to talk and hang out with his conventioneers in spite of the
fact that he's kept quite busy running the convention. When I told him my
financial situation predicated my absence, he insisted I start saving up now
for next year's.
Bob turned the phone over to the convention's [removed] Robert "Hello,
Newman" Newman. He's a really nice guy and I'm glad he can always take my
ribbing him. Robert is very proud of the Cincinnati area. Last year, he
shared with everyone one of his favourite bits of trivia which was that the
Andrews Sisters were in Cincinnati for a concert appearance on that momentous
day 12/07/1941. I had just purchased a copy of a new McFarland release aptly
titled "The Andrews Sisters" by (first name escapes me) Nimmo.
[BTW, I highly recommend this book; quite frankly, it blows the previous
Andrews bio away--but I digress]. I then told Mr. Newman that he was right and
that the new book substantiated his contention.
Hal Stone took time from his schmoozing and reveling in the
Stone/Waterman Award he had just won to say hello. As did Joan Beck, wife of
veteran SFX man Barney Beck. Joan expressed a concern that I might not make it
to Newark but I assured her I live two towns away from [removed]'s largest city &
that I most definitely would be there.
I spoke with three "Steves" in a row: first theer was scriptwriter (and
"I Love a Mystery" fan) Steve Jansen; then, Steven Hiss, my Floridian pal &
veteran party-thrower and maven of all thins relating to "Ethel and Albert;"
and finally Steve Thompson a fellow book-lover. Mr. Thompson then handed the
phone over to his lovely wife Renee, the First Lady of the Cincinnati chapter
of the Dave Warren Players. I congratulated Renee on her being included in a
recent book "We're Looking for a Few Good Moms" [I'd like to elaborate but I
might run afoul of the Digest's no-politics rule]. Renee insists that I attend
next year even if the Thompsons have to rent a Winnebago to come to [removed] to
fetch me. Sounds like a great idea, Renee, but please consider renting the
Winnebago and coming to the east coast FOTR convention. Your dynamism would
fit in quite well there and you can meet the other Thompsons who happen to be
the latest additions to the Dave Warren repetory company: Maggie Thompson,
publisher of the "Comisc' Buyer Guide" and her daughter Valerie who works in
the fashion industry.
Speaking of Dave Warren, I spoke with my good friend Gary Yoggy, winner
of the second annual Dave Warren Award which celebrates Dave's early efforts
in bringing about fan-based OTR re-creations over 20 years ago by recognising
OTR re-creationists. As one of the originators of this award (along with Bob
Burchett), I knew ahead of time Gary was this year's honoree. I'd like to
thank Mr. Burchett for green-lighting this and for last year's winner Donald
Ramlow for presenting it (in addition to the yeoman work in directing and
co-ordinating all of the Cincinnati re-creations. Bravo, Don!).
Author Martin Grams, Jr., came on the line as did journalist/OTR
scriptwriter Rick Keating. Penultimately, I spoke with Karen's dad Dan [nice
picture of you and Listmaster Charlie Summers on Charlie's blog, Dan] and
finally Karen herself.
I'd like to give a tip of the hat to regular Cincy attendees who I didn't
get a chance to speak with but whom I missed seeing all the same including:
Fred & Ellen Berney, Barry Hill, Mike and Leah Biel, Christopher Werner, Chuck
Schaden, Dan Riedstra, Jim Widner, Meredith Granger, Rodney Bowcock, the
new-improved Randy Story [Renee told me you were looking great, Randy],
T-shirt purveyor Judy Sampson, my pal Harold Zeigler [Congrats on your Parley
Baer Award, pal, & I can't wait to see the video], Terry Salomonson, the
Boogie-Woogie Girls, & the Radio Memories crew of Ted Davenport and Tom
Monroe.
Finally, I'd like to thank the ever-so-lovely Karen "Livvie" Hughes for
bringing the convention--albeit briefly--to an envious me in New Jersey. Next
year in Cincinnati!
Name-droppingly yours in the ether,
Derek Tague

Subject: USB pen-style MP3 players
Does anybody have any experience with USB pen-style
MP3 players? The price on these has dropped to the
point I'm thinking of getting one--you can find many
for under $90, and a few are going for under $70. They
only come with 128 MB, but that's fine for a weekend
trip. The two features I consider must-haves are true
resume (it picks up in the track where you stopped
last time), and it plays low bitrates. Does anybody
own one of these, or have any recommendations? I
really like the idea of having an MP3 player I can
plug directly into a USB slot, without cords, wires or
cds involved. Since this is a bit off-topic, perhaps
it would be best to contact me off-list.
Thanks,
Kermyt

Subject: Random Appreciations for the Cincinnati
Convention
To Bob Burchett et al for a wonderful Convention! As
always, the convention was a most enjoyable
experience, the recreations excellent and fun, and
IMHO the whole event just gets better year after year.
For all your hard work, [removed] and everyone who
helped pull it together and make it happen, I just
want to express my appreciation.
It was great to be able to attend again after a
two-year absence, even better to renew friendships
made at previous conventions. My only regrets are
that I wasn't able to get there sooner, and that I
didn't have more money money to spend. Oh why, oh
why, didn't I file for that income tax refund sooner?
The highlight of my weekend was to be able at last to
meet the great Hal Stone. I only wish I'd had time to
talk more with you, Hal. I was that last person to buy
your book, which, by the way, I'm thoroughly enjoying
reading. By the way, my mom is widowed, and she was
interested in seeing how you look today. We couldn't
find a current picture of you in the book. I'll send
her a copy of one of Charlie's pics from his coverage
of the convention. Who knows? LOL
Charlie, great to meet you too! And so glad you are
still alive.
The only sad note about the convention was learning of
the death of Tyler McVey. I admire Esther for her
courage to come, and hope there was some healing
comfort for her in being at the convention. My
sincerest sympathies to you, Esther, in your loss.
* * * *
Well, can't wait until next year's Convention, and now
that I have it on high authority that it's always the
3rd weekend in April unless it conflicts with Easter,
I can plan accordingly.
Thanks to [removed] planners, performers and participants
for a wonderful time.

Although not many copies were brought to the Cincinnati Convention, PRIVATE
