Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA: Missing [removed]
Folks;
We interrupt this issue for a quick [removed]
Recently, the number of complaints about missing Digest issues has
increased, and in every case thus far, the problem has been traced to the
recipient's provider, not the [removed] server.
Examples; Issue #170 was missed by a large number of Hotmail/MSN users. My
server logs clearly show the mail being delivered to the Hotmail servers with
no errors, it [removed] silently once delivered there.
Issue 171, on the other hand, was missed by all Verizon/BellSouth
customers, because their servers decided the issue was spam. The good news
is, the error was open and logged, the bad news is that doesn't help when the
issue doesn't get into your mailbox.
AOL routinely rejects issues to some (not all, and no, I don't understand
why) subscribers when a certain signature URL is posted, calling it "spam." I
refuse to ask this user to change his/her signature, since the flaw is AOL
deciding all URLs from this free webhost are spam-based when they certainly
are not.
And the unfortunate truth is, as more providers begin to use content-based
filters (like those on the inherently-flawed Brightmail server appliances),
more and more issues are being rejected because two innocuous words have a
high proximity. There is absolutely nothing we can do about that, either,
since it's impossible to figure out what these goofy filters will decide
constitutes spam.
Recent issues are always available on the archive server, so subscribers
may easily request missed issues (of course content filters may reject them a
second time). Don't misunderstand, you are still welcomed and encouraged to
let mw know when you miss an issue; certainly I've made my share of mistakes
runnning the mail server, so it might be something I need to correct. Just
don't be surprised if I discover the fault is on your provider's end.
We now return you to your regularly-scheduled Digest issue, already in
[removed]

Subject: Name that tune
I'm looking for the name of the tune the organist plays to
open Archie Andrews on NBC in the 1945-47 and 1948-51
seasons. I'm not looking for 1947-48 when Swift & Co.
sponsored the show and its own commercial jingle opened the
show. If anybody has a tape of the series for the "other"
years and wouldn't mind listening to it and seeing if you
can name that tune, I'd be grateful. While it may literally
have been music written for the show, I'm open to the
possibility it was a popular song that the organist adapted
into a fast-paced version there. (Before somebody suggests
looking in Hal Stone's book, I have the book, there's no
index, he's on the road till July and I haven't found it if
it's there.) Can anybody help? You may reply directly to
me or to the digest. And thanks, folks.
