Howdy!
Leonard Kohl here! Thanks everybody here who've been helping me with
the CHANDU book project. Looks as though I'm going to be busier than ever
now with even more on my plate - my wife Dana gave me our first newborn son,
Leonard John Kohl, who we're going to nickname "Leo" in honor of my
Grandfather's nickname when my Dad was growing up. He's a fine, healthy baby
-
nearly 8 pounds and about 20 inches long. If I can do it, I'm going to
introduce "Baby Leo" to old-time radio, Popeye, The Three Stooges, Karloff,
Lugosi, Laurel and Hardy, etc. to at least try to give my little guy some
culture
in this crazy world of "Barney the Dinosaur" and other mind-numbing
pabulum!
Seriously, I believe that music, stories and - absolutely - old-time
radio will help stimulate his imagination, and when he's ready for it, I'm
going to give him some. I hope that he'll love it as much as I do! - Lenny
Kohl

Let me first say that I'm a big fan of all detective stories,
especially those
on OTR. All of the episodes I have of "The Shadow" have only him and Margo
Lane investigating and solving the crimes. I was under the impression,
however,
that "The Shadow" had a network of helpers around the city who were skilled
in various areas which he utilized from time to time. He recruited them, as
I
recall, after saving them from some perilous situation or another. Was this
just
in "The Shadow" magazine, or did it translate to the radio program as well?
In the
OTR program, he and Margo (with some assistance from Commissioner Weston)
seemed to do alright on their own. Contact me offline with the answer.

As always,

Subject: A new version of an old text?

In 2007 Scarecrow Press published "Historical Dictionary of Old Time Radio"
by Jon Swartz and Robert Reinehr. If those names sound familiar to OTR
veterans, they should: in 1993 their "Handbook of Old-Time Radio" was
released by the same publisher.

Having never seen the newer work, and discovering precious little in the way
of definitive reviews of it, I'm seeking help from anyone who either owns or
has access to BOTH texts. If you're in that category, what contributions
does the newer volume make to our wealth of knowledge that we didn't gain in
these scribes' comprehensive, objective and authentic 1993 tome? Is there
good reason to spend $80 or less, depending on supplier (Scarecrow's having
a 20% off sale currently) for a whole lot of ADDED data than we got the
first time around? Just asking. I appreciate your replies which may be
emailed directly to me if you like.

 From Those Were The Days

5/5

1935 The program, Rhythm at Eight, made its debut. The star of the
show was 24 year old Ethel Merman. Though Merman would become a legend
years later, she didn't fare so well on radio. Her show was taken off
the air after 13 weeks and Miss Merman returned to her first love,
Broadway.

5/6

1937 A student of history, a broadcaster or anyone interested in news
coverage, will remember this day and the words of NBC's Herbert
Morrison. "Oh, the humanities!" Morrison's emotion filled historic
broadcast of the explosion of the dirigible, Hindenburg at Lakehurst,
NJ, became the first recorded coast to coast broadcast as it was carried
on both the NBC Red and NBC Blue networks from New York City.

5/8

1959 The final broadcast of One Man's Family was heard on NBC after
being on the air 27 years. The show had completed 3,256 episodes since
its beginning in 1932.

5/9

1936 Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy started their own radio show on
NBC only months after they had debuted on Rudy Vallee's program. [removed]
Fields, Don Ameche and Dorothy Lamour were a few of the stars that
helped Bergen and the little blockhead, McCarthy, jump to the top of
radio's hit parade.

SPERDVAC report:

Having attended SPERDVAC this weekend in North Hollywood for the first time in
ten years, I have admit I was very impressed. The Beverly Garland hotel is
phenomenal and the staff was extremely pleasant and wonderful, one hundred and
ten percent.

Memorable moment was meeting June Havoc who is a God to me being a fan of
Rocky and Bullwinkle and The Twilight Zone (she was the voice of Talky
[removed])

The talk radio presentation was very good and the Rudy Vallee presentation was
impressive as I learned more about Rudy Vallee than I thought. Bob Hastings
was just as funny as always.

The I LOVE A MYSTERY panel featured the attorney for the Carlton E. Morse
estate and he brought along original letters and cancelled checks from Morse's
personal collection which revealed fascinating trivia and background. The
recreation of I LOVE A MYSTERY directed by Tim Knofler was the second best
recreation I ever saw at a convention in the ten years I have been going. (The
first incidentally, was at Cincinnati's dinner banquet last weekend with Eddie
Carroll, Karen Hughes and Payton Powell.)

If you ever thought to attend SPERDVAC, make it an effort to attend it next
year.
