Hi Gang -
I'm reading back issues of the digest again. Joe Webb's mention of the
Komodo Dragon routine by Bob and Ray reminded me of my experience at the
Washington National Zoo.
I have in my collection, a much longer version of Bob and Ray's "Komodo
Dragon" skit from a radio broadcast than the one available on Bob and Ray's
commercial disc(s). In the longer version, the repeated lines about the Komodo
Dragon get funnier and funnier the longer you listen.
In 1974, I was in Washington, [removed] for several weeks. One weekend I decided
to go to the National Zoo to see if there really were two Komodo Dragons
there. Yes, they were there. The interesting thing is the SIGN on the exhibit.
The sign is almost word-for-word the script of Bob and Ray's routine.
Apparently Bob and Ray kept reading the sign over-and-over-and-over. Other
visitors to the zoo must have wondered why I was laughing at the sign.
Remember, a Komodo Dragon can knock most enemies senseless with one whack of its
tail.

Check out the coverage of the 2008 Friends of Old Time Radio Convention in
yesterday's New York Daily News by the intrepid David Hinckley. I know we've
had a bunch of sign-ups to the mailing list at [removed] in the last 24
hours, so people are reading [removed], David's information was a little out of
date so he reported that Peg Lynch is coming (she isn't any longer, sad to
report). Charlie has been great about updating the guest list and program on
the website, so if you ever question the veracity of something reported in
these articles, you can always check there (or with me). That said, a lot of
excitement is
planned.

Tom Rose emailed:
Funny, as great as LaFontaine was (and is), when I think of movie trailers,
only one name comes to mind:
Art Gilmore
There may be some who are unaware that Art Gilmore is very much alive and
doing quite [removed] in his mid 90s!
Tall, over 6 feet, soft spoke in person, and quite a gentle man, Art has had
one of the longest radio or voice over careers of almost any radio
personality.
Though I haven't talked to him lately, I heard that he is still doing voices
for presentations from the church he attends.
He has been happily married for well over 50 years (I took photos for his
50th wedding anniversary).
He also co-authored a book on radio announcing that was used for years in
colleges as THE definitive book on the subject.
Pacific Pioneer Broadcasts had for a long time recorded the history of every
person they could find who worked in radio and television.
These interviews were conducted by Les Tremayne for years, and to listen to
Art Gilmore unfold his story of radio is a wonderful step into the past.
I only wish PPB would release all the interviews to the public for it is,
indeed, an amazing history of one of the greatest eras in America.

Subject: Re: Howdy Doody
I discovered Howdy Doody here in Greater Cincinnati in February or
March, 1949, when I was seven. (It was the original circus motif with Bob
Smith still in jodhpurs and pith helmet, not yet "Buffalo Bob".)
The program didn't appear on radio here until around three years later,
when I was already growing too old to any longer really enjoy it.
There is in circulation, by the way, at least one episode of the early
1940s local radio show a HOWDY DOODY-less Bob Smith did from Buffalo, New
York.
Sincerely,
George Wagner
