CLASSICS & CURIOS

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 52

EDDIE HUBBARD AND THE BROWSERS: "ROUTE 66"

The Browsers take "Route 66" on this trip of great tunes along with a
bit of big band history and interesting trivia. In fact one of the
"cool" trivia questions on this episode is "Can you give the full
official title of the song "Route 66" and its history? Traveling along
on this "Route 66" show are some super songs and singers accompanied by
some of the best big bands. How about names like Benny Goodman, Les
Brown, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Russ Morgan, Sammy Kaye, Doris Day,
and Nat King Cole! Then there is comedian Bob Burns accompanied by Bing
Crosby on drums with a novelty version of "And the Band Played On."
We'll hear Sammy Kaye play his rendition of a good song but a
non-million seller, "Till I Kiss You at the Alter," while we try to name
Sammy's two recordings that did sell a million.

There's more. Guy Lombardo was famous for his medleys. So a good
question is, "How many tunes can be included in a medley?" And Bob
Eberly sings with Jimmy Dorsey on "Blue Champagne." Do you know what
Bob's brother's name was and which band he sang with? That wonderful
tune "Just One of Those Things" was performed in several movies. Can you
name them? Benny Goodman performs Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" for us
here, but what two or three other famous big bands recorded it, and
which versions were million sellers? Was Benny Goodman's band one of
them? Russ Morgan entertains us with his "The Johnson Rag." Can you name
the band that recorded it earlier that had a Browser on drums? Can you
guess the name of the Browser? We all know that Andy Williams made "Moon
River" "mega" famous, but can you tell where Johnny Mercer got the
title? After Doris Day sings "Gypsy" can you name two other gal singers
who also had great recordings of that song? Then we have Phil's Phooler.
The song is ""You'd Be Surprised," which was a big hit by Bonnie Baker
with Orrin Tucker in 1940. In this version a very famous actress sings
the song. Can you identify her?

Interesting is the performance of Bob Burns playing a unique musical
instrument accompanied by Bing Crosby who showed his skill (and then
some) on drums. Burns was a regular on radio shows like Rudy Vallee's
"The Fleishmann Hour" and later had his own shows in the 1940's. He
joined the cast of radio's "Kraft Music Hall" in 1936, hosted by Bing.
Burns played a self-effacing country bumpkin character, but he had
served in WW II in the marine corps, and as a sergeant he led the Marine
Corps Jazz Band in Europe where he played the trombone and cornet.
Earlier at the age of 13 back in Arkansas, he formed a string band, and
while practicing in a plumbing shop he played around with a loose gas
pipe and blew into it. Intrigued by the sound, he modified it so it
played like a primitive trombone. The instrument was to become famous
along with his hillbilly characterization. He called the instrument --
and here I give away the answer to a Browsers trivia question -- the
"bazooka" (from the word "bazoo" (meaning "windy fellow") from the Dutch
"bazuin" for "trumpet"). So the deadly battlefield weapon called a
"bazooka" owes it's serious name to a very full-of-life and funny Bob Burns.

In place of commercials Eddie throws in a few extras such as "After
You've Gone" by Tommy Dorsey from 1936. Nat King Cole performs "Funny,"
with its touching lyrics from 1960. Eddie adds "Blacksmith Blues," Ella
Mae Morse's famous hit from 1952, and "Night Train," with Jimmy
Forrest's solo saxophone performance on the opening riff. Duke Ellington
used that piece in the opening of his "Happy-Go-Lucky Local" as part of
a longer composition called "Deep South Suite." "Night Train" marks the
end of this journey down "Route 66." Enjoy the musical ride and may God
bless!

Again, thank you, "Jerry Haendiges Productions," for adapting Eddie's
original studio tape for highest quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time

Episode 5

In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"
