***I find these PSAs fascinating not infernal. PSAs on safe driving tips,
fire prevention and civil defense give us a nice perspective into life during
the Cold War and perhaps the over simplistic idealism of the times.***

I like them too, especially the ones we recently discussed from World War
[removed] I even like the 1970s PSAs that turn up on the "CBS Radio Mystery
Theatre" and "Sears Radio Theatre."? Like the one where Marlo Thomas does a
PSA and the theme to "Free to [removed] and Me" is played in the [removed]
Or like the one where Arthur Godfrey says "How are you how are you how are
you" for possibly the only [removed] to make the point he never said it
back in the day, and to tell us about Direct Deposit for government benefits.
(I have this one somewhere but last time I brought it up someone asked for a
copy and I couldn't find it.)?? But back in the 1970s I thought they just
went on forever and [removed] So I could see how others would've felt.

I also think the networks were trying to drop hints there was ad space
available. Pepsi turns up in a few "Suspense" and "Gunsmoke" episodes but I
imagine they were putting more emphasis running their spots twice an hour
during local rock DJ shows.

[removed] in mind a lot of the radio PSAs, promos and commercials were
considered very irritating back in the [removed] That includes the Lucky Strike

Subject: Cleaning up scratchy recordings transferred from
 78s to CD

My Grandfather was in a gospel quartet back in the '30s with 3 of his brothers.
At a family reunion this past weekend, one person brought in a CD they'd had
made where someone with a 78 RPM phonograph copied the old 78s the quartet made
in the 1930s (on the Bluebird label out of Atlanta - anybody ever heard of
them?) onto CD.

The sound of the piano and singing is still good, but there is a LOT of hiss
and scratches. Any products that anyone knows about I can use to clean up the
files on my PC once I rip them from the CD?

You can reply offlist if this is off topic.

Thanks all.

"The Great Radio Sitcoms," my newest book, is now available at
[removed] and 800-253-2187. It includes 20 major sitcoms, each
the focus of separate, comprehensive chapters; 13 more shows in treatises of
several lesser investigations; and 170 total sitcoms registered in the
Appendix. In addition, there are photos, extensive biographies of cast
members, factual and anecdotal material on each series, Introduction,
Bibliography and Index. The 300-page hardbound volume, with McGee & Molly
on the cover, sells for $55 + $5 shipping/handling. It may be ordered from
several websites at about the same price. McFarland has copies on hand,
however, and ships the day orders are received.

I was surprised to see a Guy Lombardo
from 1964 and a Russ Morgan from 1969. I was sure the dates were errors
until I played them. Through the song selections I believe these dates are
probably correct.

In fact, there were quite a few Guy Lombardo remotes broadcast from the New
Yorks World's fair in the 1964 and 1965. I believe they were from the
Tiparillo Pavilion at the fair.

There was a rock version some 25 years ago. I have it on two cassettes.
It was at least an hour if not more in length. There is a narration done
by richard burton woven throughout. I found the music quite compelling,
more in the style of pink floyd productions, if yyou are familar with that
group.

Subject: Red Skelton

Mark Kratzner asked about "Avalon Time," which was broadcast from the studios
of WLW in Cincinnati for several months before moving to Chicago. When the
show was originally produced at WLW in 1938, Red Foley was the star and
Skelton was merely a comedian cast-member. But it wasn't long, by the end of
the year really, before it became Skelton's show and Foley was relegated to a
supporting role. Red Skelton took over the star billing exclusively in
January 1939. (Foley, meanwhile, left with John Lair and the Renfro valley
crowd for the hills of Kentucky.) When the show went to Chicago in April
that year, Skelton and his sponsors took along several WLW'ers, including
Phil Davis and his Orchestra and vocalist Janette Davis, later of Godfrey
show fame. Peter Grant, WLW announcer who did a fantastic FDR immitation and
was busted by the Feds for doing the voice during Avalon cigarette
commercials on the show ("Ma fellow friends, you'll never guess but Avalons
cost you less!"), decided to remain in Cincinnati. Red's wife, Edna
Stillwell, was also in the cast at the time, and helped produce the show.
WLW, never shy in the self promotion department, always claimed Skelton as
part of it's "Cradle of Stars," however, he was never an official employee.
However, we have photos and recordings in our collection.

On a side observation, about contacting celebrities, most BIG names have an
agent or PR person who acts as a "firewall." Getting past the firewall can
be frustrating. It took two years of badgering to get through to Andy
Williams. Eddie Albert's guy required the focus of any contact to be on
environmental issues. I'm still trying to break the wall to Doris Day, after
seven years. My advice is to not give up and to be creative. In his book,
"Goodnight Gracie," George wrote lovingly about the house he and Gracie owned
on some street in Beverly Hills. He wrote that he lived there today (at the
time). A magnifying glass of the photo of the house in the book revealed the
house's street number and a quick trip to the post office gave the zip-code.
I received a response in the mail the following week.
Best,
Mike

listening to Avalon Time right now. I would welcome any details on the
show's cast.

I have been listening to some of his variety shows and notice a LOT of
bloopers which were laughed off and kept in. When I Googled Avalon Time for
more information, Wikipedia articles came up as a choice. Do any of you
contribute OTR information to Wikipedia?

Subject: Ellery & Phyl

Another OTR fan, Kenneth Clarke inquires about differences between
the radio shows of Ellery Queen and Phyl Coe. He asks "Wouldn't Phyl
Coe be more confusing, having to wait another week to see if their
solution was correct?" Then he ponders, "Would today's collectors
have to get two week worth of episodes to see how one turned out?"

The answer to both questions is "No."

Phyl Coe Mysteries was a syndicated show and all the episodes were
recorded before they started shopping the disks around to various
markets. Once leased, the episodes could be played starting on any
date of a given week, and then played in sequence order.

While some of the clues to the solution of the crime were obvious;
many were not. In either case, although Phyl almost always identified
the culprit, the listeners in order to win cash prizes, had to fill
out an entry form booklet (free from Philco dealers) and mail it in
with their clues.

The subsequent show did not reveal any of the solution for the
previous programs. All of the episodes were devoid of this
information in order to keep the contest fair for all entrants. So in
each episodes, "What you hear is what you get."
