7/30

1937 The American Federation of Radio Artists (AFRA) was organized. It
was part of the American Federation of Labor. The union was for all
radio performers except musicians. The union later became The American
Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) to include TV folk,
as well.

1942 Stage Door Canteen was first heard on CBS. The show was broadcast
from New York City and 500 servicemen were entertained each week by
celebrities who freely donated their time for the war effort.

7/31

1933 Listeners turned up the radio on this day to hear the announcer
introduce "Jack Armstrong, the All American Boy!" The show was one of
the longest running adventure programs on radio, continuing until 1951.

Subject: RIP: Peg Lynch

Peg had been in hospis now for a week or so.
We will do a tribute show to her on Yesterday USA and probably Same
Time, Same Station.

Her daughter wrote:

The saddest post I could possibly write:

[removed] PEG LYNCH [removed]

We lost her last night. A sudden decline in health, following a
successful hip operation in May. She went from a vibrant 98 year old
practically doing laps at the rehab center, keeping the staff in
stitches--to ghastly no-fun old age. Within a week of returning home
she was in a wheelchair, finding it hard to breathe and unable to
swallow. Between Hospice and good friends, and Peg's unbelievably
wonderful staff here at the house---Bonnie, Dominick and Terri--my
dear Mama was never alone for a second, there was always someone on
hand, including myself, to cuddle or hold or make laugh, as necessary.

She passed away in Terri's arms, as Terri sang her an Irish lullaby.
(I had had to race out to a pharmacy to get her prescription--the
only time I'd left the house.)

As my friend Ali said, "I hope they know what they're in for on the
other side--she's sure going to shake things up, wherever she's gone!"

She sure is.

No funeral. No flowers please, or cards. A memorial to be organized
at some point. Meanwhile, what I would like, but only if you feel so
inclined--is a few words about Peg and how she touched your life
(good or bad!). Message or email or postcard. I will then compile
them and eventually load onto [removed], under TRIBUTES.
She would love that.

The NY Times will be running her obituary tomorrow or Monday.

To old fans: thank you for all your kindnesses over the years. To
new ones: what took you so long?

[ADMINISTRIVIA: Kate and I have already started going through material for a
tribute on SummersTime. When Kate was much younger, she saw Peg and Bob
Hastings perform a skit about math at the Cincinnati [removed] took a
copy into her math teacher, who apparently was quite amused. Peg was an
amazing woman, who will be sorely missed. --cfs3]
