From Those Were The Days
2/18
1949 Yours Truly Johnny Dollar debuted on CBS. The program starred
Charles Russell as the insurance investigator with the action packed
expense account.
2/19
1922 Ed Wynn became the first big name vaudeville talent to sign on as
a radio talent. Previously, top talent had not considered radio a
respectable medium.
2/22
1954 ABC radio's popular Breakfast Club, program with longtime host,
Don McNeill, was simulcast on TV beginning this day. The telecast of the
show was a bomb, but the radio program went on as one of the longest
running programs on the air. (I saw a kinoscope of that show and
basically it was the radio show with a camera pointed at the cast.
Hmmm, come to think of it, it wasn't much different from today's video
podcasts. --ed)

I've maintained a website dedicated to old WTIC (Hartford, CT) programs for
several years. On the site, you can find WTIC's "The Golden Age of Radio,"
with Dick Bertel and Ed Corcoran, and "A One Night Stand with the Big Bands"
with Arnold Dean.
The Golden Age programs featured interviews with radio stars, writers,
producers, technicians, and others from radios "golden age," along with
excerpts of the shows in which they were involved. The "One Night Stand" shows
consisted of interviews with big band legends, along with some of their
music.
Thanks to Ed Brouder, of Man from Mars productions, I recently acquired some
programs that were on WTIC in the '60s: The Hootenanny Road Show. This
program, hosted by Brad Davis, who, for many years has been the morning man on
WDRC, Hartford, were broadcast live from high schools and colleges on Saturday
nights. The programs featured local talent. You can hear these new
acquisitions at [removed]
All programs on this website are free to listen to or download; there is no
registration required. Just click and listen. Oh, and if you like what you
hear, feel free to send me an email.
