Subject: Beware of Rodney Bowcock?
But, Rodney, you yourself can be a dishonest chap, as in my personal
experiences, where you took months to fulfill a video order, and then
sent damaged merchandise.
On which you've never made good.
I have no doubt that at times you process your orders properly, but you
are hardly a professional, when it comes to this hobby.

Subject: Holler for Butcher
...the first of what were called Roosevelt's famous Fireside Chats.
The name, incidentally, was coined by newsman, Robert Trout.
Oh my, we've been down this road so many times before.
Robert Trout introduced most of FDR's talks from the White House and was
celebrated for being the first to apply the popular epithet "Fireside
Chats." But the appellation originated with WJSV manager Harry Butcher, who
proposed it because FDR spoke from the Diplomatic Reception Room furnished
with a fireplace. Butcher reasoned that -- as millions tuned in -- it was
as if the chief executive was right by people's home firesides, speaking
one-on-one. Trout was the man who turned Butcher's sobriquet into the
common man's everyday vernacular.

Subject: Odd Coincidence
While we are still mourning the death of our good friend, Hal Stone, I
came across an article with a strange coincidence. Since 1995, the Bronx
Zoo has had four grizzly bears named Archie, Jughead, Betty, and
Veronica. Can you guess which one just died?

Subject: Imposing on actors
Rodney Bowcock responded admirably in defending Bob Burchett and the Cincy
Convention, against the following comment:
"Wasn't one ring of Dante's Inferno reserved for folks who impose upon
actors? Especially older actors?"
Somehow I missed this when it first came up, so I can't identify the sad
person that proposed this theory. Has he/she never heard of "free will"?
I was happy to attend the Cincy con several times and always enjoyed it
immensely. I already knew Bob Burchette from our many years together at
FOTR. He's a fine man and a lot of fun. I've been honored to rub shoulders
(they're all tall out there) with many radio greats at SPERDVAC. I imagine
there are some potential guests for any and all the conventions that resent
the financial arrangements, but I doubt there are many. In my experience,
most of them delight in attending and being with their fans.
I discussed this just recently talking about Dwight Weist, who didn't want to
come to SPERDVAC (all the way from New York City to Newark NJ) but not
because of the reimbursements - just figured he'd never be interested. Once
Jackson Beck persuaded him to come and he did, Dwight loved it and came each
year until his passing. I'm among the many who found him a delight.
One FOTR guest was one of the nicest gents I ever hope to meet - Parley Baer,
just a lovely man. I met his late flight at Newark Airport and we walked
into the dinner/performance room after everyone else had sat down and Jay
Hickerson was making some announcements. Jay saw us and asked the crowd to
say hello to Parley. He was completely taken off guard when a wave of
applause hit him and everybody joined the standing ovation. Parley later
told me nothing like that had ever happened to him. He stopped in his
tracks, stunned, and looked over his shoulder at me, asking, "Is this for
me?" He was neither the first nor the last guest I saw get very dewy-eyed
at his or her reception. I doubt that he ever forgot that moment. I know I
never will.
Mr. Bowcock referred only to his delight with the Cincinnati convention, but
the same defense would hold for the rest of the half-dozen or so around the
country. Let me give one more memory re the arrangement for travel, and the
attitude of the performers.
For years we at FOTR asked Bea Wain and Andre Baruch to come east from
California. They very politely said no, with no explanation. Finally, at
SPERDVAC in November, a couple of weeks after FOTR, I saw them walking toward
me in a hotel corridor. I introduced myself and invited them again. It
turned out that they just didn't like to fly other than First Class, and the
FOTR budget simply could not handle more than round trip Coach, plus all the
hotel stay and meals. I explained this.
Bea said she didn't realize that and asked, "Would it be alright if we booked
First Class, and we paid the difference in cost ourselves?" I said we would
be thrilled, and that was very generous of them. They agreed on the spot to
join us the following October, and were just like two happy kids about the
prospect. So were we! Sadly, Andre passed away the following September,
about a month before the next FOTR.
I could relate numerous such touching stories involving many of these
wonderful people whose names I imagine every reader here would know. Perhaps
the questioner thinks the OTR conventions are commercial undertakings where
the leaders rake in huge amounts of money and run all the way to the bank. I
know these wonderful events are all run on shoestring budgets. Despite this,
they produce marvelous memories for ALL who attend. If they had to actually
PAY for the performers' attendance and performances within the re-creations
and all, there could be no such events. And what a loss that would be!
Instead of castigating any of the OTR conventions and their people, I think
we should all thank them and their organizers for the wonderful jobs they do
and the marvelous opportunities they afford us fans and the people we
remember, admire and adore.

To follow up on Jack French's letter, I have been asked many

man, and we talked about where our ancestors came from.
I am not related to anyone famous, whether they be basketball

Subject: Richard Nixon Radio Talks
RADIO ONLY PRESIDENTIAL TALKS
Before Ronald Reagan "brought back" the idea that there should be at least
some radio only addresses by the president, it seems to me that Richard
Nixon was fairly prolific with long-form policy speeches on radio only,
talks that perhaps were not thought interesting enough for tv airtime, but
nevertheless the administration thought important enough to get out to the
public other than by newspaper and in a more intimitate setting.
Does anyone remember Nixon doing this? And what about other presidents in
the television age using radio only, before Nixon? It would be interesting,
I think to find information, perhaps on the web, about this use of the
media.

Subject: Same story on Gunsmoke and Fort Laramie
Hello, I'm researching the fact that at least two, or maybe more, of the
scripts on Fort Laramie, were also done on Gunsmoke. It's going to be a
feature on a Thursday night OTR voice chat, but I can't find the info after
using my collection and the show descriptions at the Radio Gold Index. I
thought that the script on Fort Laramie called Woman at Horse Creek was used
on Gunsmoke, but can't find the Gunsmoke version. I found the FL show where
Lee was hurt and brought to a cabin, where the lady took everything they had
in order for them to stay. FL continued on that with another episode about
Hattie, but I don't see where Gunsmoke did. If anyone can give help on this
situation, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to be able to present the shows back
to back to show differences in the scripts from two different series.
Thanks a lot.
