Subject: A bit more on Michael Shayne
Yes, Karen Lerner is right about there being two Michael Shayne shows.
The first she mentioned, that aired in the 1940s, starred Wally Maher as
Michael Shayne and Cathy Lewis as his sidekick (can't remember the
characters
name).
The second series aired in the 50s and starred Jeff Chandler as Shayne.
The difference between the two series is dramatic. The Maher/Lewis
version
followed the approach that most detective shows followed in the 40s:
A tough, but NOT
really hard boiled detective who looked for facts and encountered
various characters,
some cunning, some sleezy, some bright and intellectual, etc. The
show was not
much different in approach to such detective series as Mr. and Mrs.
North, Mr. District Attorney,
and others.
In contrast, the second series aired after the establishment (in
novels) of the hard boiled,
tough, no holds barred detective. The "new" Shayne was a hard boiled
egg who took no
crap from anyone. He did everything his way and his way only. A
tough, rigid character who
occasionally softened when he let a woman get a little near his heart.
The popularity of Mickey Spilane's Mike Hammer changed
the detective genre, and, in turn, changed Michael Shayne.

By way of clarification:
My last posting involved the alleged availability of a video print of John
Moran's "Jack Benny--The Opera" at the NYPL for the Performing Arts/"Billy
Rose." Although I do remember having seen it listed in a low-tech card
catalogue, I have never actually accessed it myself , and have thus been
informed off-list by top Kubelsky-an Laura Leff that the facility does not
have an available print. Whetjher it ever did is anybody's guess. I shall
endeavour to look into this further. More, if anything, as it develops.

Subject: Re:New Google news search
Sean wrote:
Google has released a new service, allowing searches of major news
media going
back, well as far back as the news media have put their archives online. <
I tried this a day or so ago and would (at this point at least) caution
on any expectations that it is comprehensive.
I keyed in "Wyllis Cooper" for example and having already done a lot of
research on the subject knowing there are a lot of references in various
media regarding the man, Google offered about 30 or so entries. None
were any I hadn't seen before but there were many missing even from the
very sources they search.
So I am wondering if they are limiting the number of references
discovered (or they simply haven't gotten the search keys and source
material fully on-line yet).
One other caution, as Sean mentioned, some of the references are to
items that require payment. One I went to gave no result, but simply
presented me with a login and password request. I sense a spammer
opportunity here that could somehow fool one into paying for something
they didn't want to pay for.
So as should always be the case when researching on-line - shields up!

Subject: News Bulletins
I am currently listening to what for me is a fascinating compilation of
radio shows broadcast on or shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack. Almost
all of the shows are interrupted in whole or in part for news bulletins.
That's understandable.
But, when they return to the show in progress, it seems no one on the air
was aware of the content of the bulletins. I don't even thinnk they knew
they had been interrupted.
Were the broadcast studios isolated from the news bulletins?
One of the shows is a talk show and twice it is interrupted for war news.
No mention of that. But at one point the moderator states he was just
handed a note that Burma was presently being bombed. Couldn't they have
handed him a note that Pearl Harbor had just been bombed?
All this seems odd to me, but maybe there is a good explanation for it.

Subject: John Conte death
Unless I'm mistaken, I don't believe anyone has mentioned the death of OTR
announcer, emcee, singer, actor John Conte. He was born Sept. 15, 1915 in
Palmer, Massachusetts and died Sept. 4, 2006 in Rancho Mirage, California.
He was 90. Radio Gold has 344 listings for Conte, most of them highlighting
his announcing duties. He had his own program, The John Conte Show
(1952-1953). A baritone, Conte was first heard over KHJ in 1936, then
nationally on "Screen Guild Theater." In the 1940s he was a cast member on
the Burns and Allen show. He acted in radio, Broadway musicals and early TV.
In the 1960s he switched to the management side of TV with ownership of a
Palm Springs TV station. He was married 3 times, once to actress Marilyn
Maxwell. He died of natural causes.

Subject: Little Jack Little I think
Hi All, I first want to say it's a pleasure posting again after so
many years away. Next I have a question about a wartime show. I've
only heard an expert and I'm pretty sure the show was hosted by Jack
Little. The only exerpt I have goes like this. "Little Jack Little
and our opening number I've always wanted to waltz in Berlin. Here
it is." Jack had very bass voice and he doesn't sing but rather
speaks the lyrics while I'm guessing he plays the piano. Who was he? Matt
