Subject: conventions & Wall St. Journal
Someone just posted about the Wall St. Journal article and how it's important to some
to attract more young people to the events. I think a good idea would be to tie yesterday
to now. You don't have to get Johnny Depp in, but there's a medium: voice actors. Try
to hook into the cartoon voice - and possibly anime - society, since many of the actors
who quit radio went into cartoons and/or early television. So there is a connection.
Also, perhaps try for the sons and daughters of famous radio/voice people. I myself
know the sons of Paul Frees, Daws Butler and Jerry Colonna. These people have good
stories to tell. I'm sure we could track down more.
Just a few thoughts. :)

Subject: Smoking on Dragnet
Chris Holm asks about smoking "scenes" on Dragnet radio:
I've always wondered why they did [removed]
IMHO, to answer his questions:
- Yes, I think Jack Webb WAS a "sound perfectionist" who was always
striving for realism. Smoking cigarettes was socially acceptable at the
time, and there was no taboo against smoking most places, including LAPD
Headquarters. Besides, that was only one of the tools that he used in
telling the stories: Remember the dialog among the detectives about what
they would have for lunch, or how Friday's mother was "getting along", or
what the weather was like during the story.
I remember reading an article about the (original) TV Dragnet series that
mentioned that Webb was so insistent on authenticity that he had the
*doorknobs* on the TV set molded to match the ones in the LAPD Headquarters
building.
- It probably helped that they were sponsored by a cigarette brand, but I
don't think Webb would have included "smoking scenes" just to placate the
sponsor if smoking wasn't acceptable for his characters - or audience.
- If I remember right, Jack Webb did do commercials for specific brands of
cigarettes, but not as part of the Dragnet shows' stories, so I don't think
there was a sponsor "plug" involved.
Maybe somebody can correct me where I'm wrong? ...

Subject: foreign otr
Re Kenneth Clarke's remarks about "foreign" OTR---How provincial! What
about those wonderful programs that used to leak across the border from
Canada's clear-channel stations? And how about the South African and
Australian recreations from old American scripts (Fat Man, Night Beat
and Portia Faces Life come to mind). Finally, who would ever want to
ban The Goon Shows from any discussion of OTR?
[ADMINISTRIVIA: No one is "banning" anything, mearly noting the focus
of the list is programming broadcast in the [removed] between the 1920's and
1963, so the list is somewhat "provincial" in its main focus. Now that
that is settled, let's stop discussing what is and is not on-topic, and
return to discussing OTR. --cfs3]

Hi Friends,
Jim Widner commented on the HOWIE WING transcription discs, which I had
restored for Kathy Hammel (who is the proud finder of the discs). All six
programs, along with fourteen of the sponsor, Kelloggs, musical commercial
spots, are available from us on CD and mp3.
We are not making these programs available on cassette at this time.
However, if you do want them on cassette, I have given Ted Davenport the
exclusive rights to sell the cassettes. So you may obtain them from Ted at
[removed]
Incidentally, we have just finished the restoration on a SUSPENSE
episode,
which, up until now was thought to be lost. We will be playing that episode
on our next week's Same Time, Same Station broadcast at

Hello all,
Members of the International Jack Benny Fan Club will know this already, but
the news is too good not to share more broadly. I have put together a
book-bound version of our newsletters, The Jack Benny Times, from 2000-2005.
It's
8"x10", 387 pages, and includes an index of all the issues. Tons of photos,
trivia, exclusive interviews, and data about Jack that I think you just
can't find anywhere else. All this for only $[removed]! Go to
_[removed]_
([removed]) and click on the Back Issues link under Featured
Items for more information.
I also have to give credit where it's due, and there's a really gorgeous
full-color photo of Jack on the cover of this volume. It was restored by the
Digest's own Amanda Osborne (_alo@[removed]_ (mailto:alo@[removed]) ), who
did an absolutely breathtaking job with it. Amanda does this kind of work
professionally, and I'm sure there are many people out there who need this
kind
of service for their own OTR books or even their personal collections. Check
out her Web site for more samples of her work:
_[removed]_
([removed]) They say
you get what you pay for, but in Amanda's case, you'll get much, much more.
Also a reminder that it's that time of year [removed] to renew
subscriptions to The Jack Benny Times for 2006. For more information, go to

Even tho Jim Yellen says he thinks Radio Spirits does its homework, I beg to
differ. Consult any of their catalogs in the last 2 years and you will find
spelling and other errors of fact. I once planned to write to RS with some
examples. They became too numerous for me to keep track of.
I think if Anthony Tollin were still with RS he would catch these errors.

I hava a Mysterious Traveler labeled 471028 Invitation to Death. The label
could be wrong.
It stars Cliff Carpenter, not Maurice Tarplin.
Radiogoldindex shows Cliff Carpenter appearing in the 52-4-29 Murder In 2952
episode, although this episode is not that one. Did Cliff Carpenter take over
the role at any point?

Its amazing of the things you learn listening to OTR.
I was listening to Life of Riley today, the episode is
How to pick a mate. year 1948. His conscious was
questioning him about his pay check and what he
purchased. He bought a pair of bell bottom pants. I
just cant imagine that era wearing bell bottom pants.
I always thought they were a product of the 1960's.
Next thing I know, I'll find out that they were into

Well I guess I'll be shoveling off

Subject: American Radio
In issue #338, Kenneth Clarke commented:
" I agree with Charlie, that although there were several great programs
on BBC radio, we should limit our discussions to what happened on/with
American radio. After all, that's what we usually discuss on the mailing
list anyway. I'm sure there are mailing lists out there which deal with
BBC radio programs which can be accessed."
I think Charlie's comment was more a gentle reminder that this is an OTR
list not NTR list, rather than a comment on country of origin.
With the importing/exporting of shows and people during the Golden Years of
Radio, it is inevitable that there will be questions asked here that non
Americans will have the answers. If the list doesn't have those people then
the questions may remain unanswered.
Over the years I have been involved in OTR, quite a number of series and
individual shows were misidentified as [removed] that were South African, or
Australian or Canadian or British and vice versa. We need people with
knowledge in those areas to assist from time to time.
A list like this is successful because we don't know what is going to be
discussed before we open each issue, sure we know OTR will rate a mention.
If there is only one subject and you can never stray from that, then folks
who are not as focused on that one subject will wander away and not be
around if and when a question that crosses their particular special
interest, is asked.
You can trust Charlie to nudge the discussion back on track when he senses
the majority have lost interest in that thread.
