Subject: Arthur Anderson and Leon Janney on CAR 54
My friend Mark Evanier has an embedded video of CAR 54, WHERE ARE YOU? on
his [removed] blog. The episode guest stars Jan Murray and also
features OTR veterans Arthur Anderson (as the emcee) and Leon Janney (as the
doctor) in supporting roles. FOTR's favorite leprechaun voices the second
line in the show, and stays on as emcee to introduce all the barber shop
quartet acts. And I think that's Ruth Last as the butcher's wife.
Leon Janney was of course a very busy OTR performer, starring in THE PARKER
FAMILY and voicing the title role on CHICK CARTER, BOY DETECTIVE. He was a
regular on Ken Roberts' QUICK AS A FLASH quiz program and was also
frequently heard on THE SHADOW, CHARLIE CHAN and MR. DISTRICT ATTORNEY. Leon
served on the national board of AFTRA for 30 years. Coincidentally, the most
recent volume of my double-novel SHADOW trade paperbacks (#26) includes a
1944 CHICK CARTER radio script in which Nick Carter's adopted son shares an
adventure with The Shadow and Thanksgiving dinner with Lamont Cranston and
Margot Lane. Our late FOTR friend John Archer voiced The Shadow in this rare
radio crossover in a rare radio crossover which unfortunately does not
survive in recorded form. --Anthony Tollin

Subject: Halo, Everybody
While we are on the subject of that very memorable jingle, it seems to me
that I had read somewhere that its melody had come from a popular song, or
greeting, of the day: "Hello, Everybody, Hello!". If this is true, wouldn't
Halo have had to pay a lot of money for use of the jingle? Does anyone
[removed] came first, the "original" song, or the jingle?

The Paley Center for Media holds several hours' worth of coverage of the
Hauptmann trial, as covered by attorney Samuel Liebowitz for WHN. These
broadcasts date primarily to January and February of 1935, and were donated
to the Paley Center in 2003 by the heirs of Liebowitz, who apparently had the
recordings made for his personal use.
