Most of those who know me are aware that my parents, my sister, and I
survived the Pearl Harbor attack. Long after the event, though, there were
a couple of interesting items with a Pearl Harbor connection. Through the
1940s, my absolutely favorite show was an adventure serial, Captain
Midnight. The title character of the show was an aviator who headed a
(fictional) Government organization that contended against espionage,
sabotage, and crimes that endangered national security. The show went off
the air in 1949, but I never forgot it. In the 1970s, I was inspired to write
a book that would preserve the program's stories. To do this, I contacted
the sponsor of the program, and I was granted access to the scripts of the
shows. I took copious audio notes. Within the scripts was a 1941 story that
was broadcast well before 7 December. Captain Midnight and his crew were
flying over Japanese-occupied China when their aircraft was shot down by
agents of an international criminal, The Barracuda, who had connections with
Japan. Two of the crewmembers were captured by The Barracuda's forces, and
Captain Midnight found allies and conducted a raid to recover the captives.
In the successful raid, he found in a secret compartment in The Barracuda's
office, plans for an attack on Pearl Harbor! This was well before the
actual attack. When I read that, I got quite a chill. (The story is
recounted in my book,
[removed] ), which was
published in 2000. Before I started writing my first draft of the book,
though, I figured that the only way I could write it correctly would be to
understand a pilot's perspective. I discovered that I enjoyed flying
sufficiently that I eventually bought an airplane, which I happily flew
until I got married. When I acquired my airplane, a Piper PA28-151, my
friends in Digital's Public Relations department threw me a party at
lunchtime to celebrate. The dessert of the meal was a cake, on the top of
which was a small yellow-colored plastic airplane. It was a tiny replica of
a low-wing monoplane, and was nestled in the cake's icing. The airplane
looked vaguely familiar, but I couldn't place it. After the party, I cleaned
off the little airplane and examined it closely. It was a replica of the
Mitsubishi A6 fighter, known to US service people as the Zero, one of the
aircraft that participated in the Pearl Harbor attack. I don't believe
anyone in the department knew that I was present during the attack. Steve
