What was Eastern War Time? Standard time? or what.
I have been told by folks who lived through it, it was like todays Daylight
Savings Time.

While we're on the subject of Art Linkletter on the radio, maybe someone can
help me with some details on something:
People who go to the intersection of Hollywood & Vine in Hollywood,
California (as I did in 1999) usually find that it looks like almost any
other street
corner. ([removed] all of them have such a nice view of the Capitol
Records
building or the special "Walk of Fame" corner stars devoted to the Apollo
astronauts. But I digress.) Anyway, a tour guide and historic marker both
told
me the reason Hollywood & Vine is so famous is because Art Linkletter did
live, man on the street interviews on that corner during the golden days of
radio,
and one of those two sources even suggested that, in fact, was where "man on
the street" interviews were invented. Any truth to this? What show did
Linkletter do this for, "People are Funny"? Any recordings exist of those
interviews?

I believe it was named after a small town on the Mississippi.
WEll, it's in Mississippi, but not on the Mississippi (close, but about 35
miles away). The correct spelling is Hushpuckena. Take my word for it, I
used to drive right by it almost every day when I was in college.

Subject: Mr. Keen, by the numbers
Irene Heinstein wrote:
Thomas Pawlak asked about the number of Mr Keen programs available.
I have 57 episodes and according to many loggers that is about the number
available, at least now. Hopefully more will surface.
When I was researching "Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons," a new title to be
released by McFarland & Co. ([removed]) this month, I discovered
there were at least 64 of Keen's 1,690 episodes on tape but five of those
appear to be privately held leaving 59 in widespread circulation, generally
available from OTR dealers. I, too, hope more will surface and haven't
concluded that some individual collectors might not have some. I was
fortunate in acquiring virtually the complete run of 1,690 scripts,
providing incredible details simply available no where else.
Irene also asked for an explanation of Eastern War Time. Others will offer
more comprehensive answers but it was essentially a pattern of moving the
clocks forward one hour to make greater use of daylight (a prelude to DST)
during WWII, thereby conserving power theoretically for military benefit.
The mention of Eastern War Time was common not only on Mr. Keen but many
other shows during those years.

Subject: Alan King on radio
Sean Dougherty asked if Alan King was on radio. I saw a VHS tape of his
routines and he said he once appeared as a singer on Major Bowes and finished
second to a guy who played the Bells of St. Mary by rapping his knuckles on
his bald head. King then said, "Imagine how good I was to finish second"

Subject: Art Linkletter on OTR
There was a program which Linkletter hosted
called "People Are Funny". It was on during the
early 1950's, I think. He'd select people from the
audience to accomplish a set task, which he'd
deliberately sabotage. Should they accomplish the
task, they'd get a nice prize. He even had a stop-
and-go segment. He'd start counting and when the
they audience member said stop they'd get a prize.
Unfortunately, the prize would often, but not always,
be something totally useless like 5 lbs of weinerwurst
or a 10 ls halibut. Anything for a laugh!
Allen Funt had a OTR program called "Candid
Microphone" which, I believe, was a precursor to the
TV program "Candid Camera".
Many of the game/audience participation shows
which are considered 'classic TV' began on OTR. Some of
them were "What's My Line?", "I've Got a Secret" and
"You Bet Your Life".
Many of the more successful game shows from classic
TV were produced by Mark Goodson and Bill Toddman. For
many years they were the golden boys when it came to game/
audience participation shows. Almost everything they
produced became a success. I've often wondered if they
produced anything for OTR. I also wonder why, when
there are shows about 'classic TV shows', why the programs
rarely mention the fact that many of them actually began
on OTR. I guess that would make an entire program in
itself.
What do you think?
Another OTR fan,
Kenneth Clarke

Laura remarked:
Molly), and there's a music number towards the end of the movie where
Rufe Davis gets on stage and sings "I'm the Sound Effects Man".
This is a very cute song and I'd hate to think that it has found the same
oblivion as its host movie. Was this song ever used elsewhere?
It was! Rufe Davis recorded it for commercial release, and it came out
on Decca. I have the record but it's not easily accessible right now,
otherwise I'd pass along the particulars. As for ever being issued
aside from the original 78, I don't know ... but I doubt it.

The other day a name popped into my mind from out of the past, Wendy
Warren. She had, as I remember it, a news program that lasted five
minutes and then it was followed by a ten-minutes soap. She certainly
must have been an early "working woman." I was just wondering how long
this program lasted?

Subject: MP3 Boombox
Can anyone help Robert Colonna <rcolonna@[removed];
I have the GPX C988 Boom Box. It is a portable box that plays cassettes, CDs
and MP3s. I am experiencing problems with the MP3 functionality as follows:
1. Some MP3 CDs do not play properly. For example, I have 144 MP3 OTR files
on one Maxell CD-R. Each file is about 6-8 Megs in length (approximately 30
minute shows). These MP3 CDs were created using Roxio's EZ CD Creator 5
software at bitrates varying between 32-44.
2. The MP3 OTR files play, but only play for the first 15 minutes (or
approximately half an episode). Then the C988 skips to the next track!
For the record, pre-recorded audio CDs, tapes and the radio play fine with
no problems. Interestingly, I have used Roxio to create my own audio CDs
(using the same Maxell CD-Rs) and they play fine as well.
