Subject: Time marches On!

My former friend Lee Munsick posted:

Of course the moral in all of this is, go to as many conventions and meet
as many of these wonderful people as you can. Sadly, there are fewer of
them every year. In another ten years probably the only one left will be
dear Arthur Anderson!

Humph! I say againŠŠWhat am I? Chopped Liver! Thanks for the comforting
thought Lee. :) Wow! So little [removed] many people to "get even" with. :)

Besides, if I'm not mistaken, I'm younger than Arthur. (But then again, I
lead a more reckless and dissipated lifestyle, so he just might outlast me).

I just hope I last long enough to finish the dang book. If it sells, then my
young wife (18 years old) will have the means to keep a roof over her head.
:)

And what's all this BS about everyone should attend conventions. Your not
going to Cincy! All talk, that's you. :(

It's just as well you won't be there. You'll escape having cubed Jello
slipped into your shorts. Like I always sayŠ Paybacks are hell! :)

Well, we still have Jack French and Tom Heathwood to be heard from. Don't be
bashful, fellas, let us hear your story about your contributions.

Dennis DeMarco wrote:

Anyway, the author mentions that the stooges made some radio appearances in
the 30s, including some with Ted Healy.

Does anyone know what shows they were and if they exist?

The Stooges once turned up, of all places, in a daytime soap opera. The
following item is from the "Merchandising and Promotion" column of
Broadcasting, issue of 10/15/37, p. 90:

"Columbia Pictures Corp., New York, and Pillsbury Flour Mills Co.,
Minneapolis, will conduct a tie-in advertising campaign for Columbia's
"Three Stooges" comedies and Pillsbury's Farina. On October 18th, the
'Stooges' will be introduced into the script of 'Today's Children.'
Pillsbury's program is broadcast five days a week on the NBC-Red network.
The Pillsbury agency is Hutchinson Adv. Co., Minneapolis."

There are a few episodes of "Today's Children" floating around, and given
the tone of the program, I cannot begin to imagine how Moe, Larry, and
Curly were "introduced into the script," or for that matter how such a
bizarre tie-in came about in the first place. (I'd love to have been
sitting in on the pitch meeting.) There doesn't seem much chance of a
recording showing up, but the script would be fascinating to examine.

Thands to all who caught my error in my last posting:

I saw Penny Singleton & Meredith Macrae (wife of Gordon) in
a USO show shortly after I arrived at K47 Air Force Base,
Chunchon, Korea in October 1953

It was Sheila Macrae not their daughter Meredith who was only
9 years old in 1953. Just wanted to make sure you were all
paying attention. :-)

Hi can anyone tell me which newsgroups are available
for down loading otr programs?
Thanks

There are about half a dozen otr and related news groups.

The ones you might be most interested in are:
[removed]
and
[removed]

(Note the second one is "sound" not "sounds."

There are also some British groups but not all radio groups are on all
servers. You should also be aware that you need a premium news server in
order to find complete postings. Small news servers are likely to be
disappointing.

To see what groups your server has available just search the list starting at

Subject: Roy Barfield's Book

After reading Jack French's reply to Kevin Michael's I realized that on my
last response I had the wrong book on my mind. To answer Kevin's question,
now that I have the proper book. Like Jack French, my name seems to be in many
places where OTR people congregate. I just got a letter one day from Roy
Barfield asking if I would like to contribute to a new book that he had in the
works. I sent him a little anecdote about my favorite program as a child (Buck
Rogers) and my mother's reaction to it. I was pleasantly surprised when I
actually saw that he used my little anecdote.

Subject: Memories

I enjoy this forum so much that I feel as if I almost know its
contributors. So I'd like to share a few memories of my father as they
relate to old time radio.

I remember him faithfully tuning in to Bing Crosby to hear Bing sing
about the blue of the night meeting the gold of the day. I remember his
oft-repeated imitation of the opening of "The Shadow" ("Who knows what evil
lurks ..."). I remember his lame parody: "Tales calculated to keep you in
SUSPENDERS!" I remember how he'd never miss Jack Benny's show and would
cheerfully, and fairly accurately, imitate several cast members -- even
Mister Kitzel! (He also did a dead-on impersonation of Senator Claghorn of
Allen's Alley fame). Yes, he enjoyed the greatness that came from behind
that glowing dial so many years ago.

My dad died yesterday. When I was very little, I thought he was King
of the World, that there was nothing he didn't know or couldn't do. I
didn't have to get much older to learn that surely wasn't so, and yet when
I got the phone call that I had been both anticipating and dreading, I
thought of a sentence from Shakespeare: "Let us sit upon the ground and
tell sad stories of the death of kings."

I found it at [removed] (had never heard of it before) and it is,
indeed, $[removed], but says it's a 4-cd set, not 2. Here are the
contents as listed on the web.

4 Compact Discs of the Classic Eddie Cantors's Radio Show from
December 1931 through December 1933.
Disc One Includes: Radio Shows from 12/13/31, 10/30/32 and 11/5/32
Disc Two Includes: Radio Shows from 11/26/33 and 12/3/33
Disc Three Includes: Radio Shows from 12/10/33 and 12/17/33
Disc Four Includes: Radio Shows from 12/24/33 and 12/31/33
80 Tracks Total

Same set you're talking about?

Subject: when did tape become the norm

I know that ABC allowed Bing Crosby to use magnetic tape circa 1947, but
I was wondering when the networks stopped using discs for transcribing
and switched to tape. Was it over a long period of time or a relatively
short one?
