Subject: Lone Ranger's First Broadcast

Jim Harmon's "The Great Radio Heros" has this to say about the first Lone
Ranger broadcast: "The pilot broadcast met with mixed reactions from the
WXYZ staff. Trendle didn't like the Ranger's high spirits and good humor,
and the rest of the staff didn't like the Masked Man's formal, eastern way
of speaking. So they compromised. The Lone Ranger lost his sense of humor
and kept his formal speech."

Subject: Maudie Pemberton

A while ago, Ron Sayles asked if anyone had a clue as to who played
Maudie Pemberton on One Man's Family.

In his definitive Radio Log of One Man's Family, H. Edwin Titus (a
private printing - 2002) said it was probably Betty Lou Gerson.

Subject: How were the Elgin specials distributed?

I know that AFRS broadcasts were forbidden from advertising to soldiers
overseas, and therefore broadcasts were edited before distribution
(commercials cut, Lux Radio Theatre becomes Hollywood Radio Theatre, etc.)

But listening to an Elgin Christmas special the other day, I got to
wondering how it was distributed. It advertises itself as a broadcast for
servicemen, yet it's rife with commercials and references to Elgin watches.
Were the Elgin specials distributed overseas? Were they on AFRS, or through
another service? Or were they just broadcast domestically and not really
broadcast overseas?

Thanks,
Chris Holm
