I was shocked to received the statistics tonight. On Monday, I was a guest on
[removed] talking about THE TWILIGHT ZONE and more importantly, Rod
Serling's radio career, and ROM broke a record for number of listeners. Then,
on Wednesday, the record got broken again. Tonight, on Friday, Neal received
callers from Finland, California, Georgia and Iowa, and one surprise
celebrity, and broke the record again, and towards the end of the broadcast
received e-mails via Facebook asking for the program to continue beyond the
scheduled time.

Laura Leff will be guest on Monday talking about Jack Benny, so I hope to hear
the same good news again!

(And thank goodness the show isn't being aired on Tuesday nights because the
season premiere of LOST begins this Tuesday.)

Back to Jack Benny, I want to remind people that Laura Leff has written two
large volumes documenting everything about the Jack Benny radio program, and
having reviewed them myself, they come highly recommended. Her web-site is

I believe Music and the Spoken Word broadcasts are available online. If you
look up the Choir on a search engine, it will give you the website. I seem to
recall that the last time I logged on, there was an archive of recent
programs. Also, if you have satellite TV, the BYUTV channel has it Sundays at
2 [removed] PST. And, check BYUTV's site for BYU radio; it may have the choir
broadcasts. If none of these work, email me and I'll do some <argghh>
research. (Any DC readers who remember Trumbull and Core will understand the
"argghh"; it was one of their recurring jokes.) Hope this helps.

 From Those Were The Days

1/31

1936 The Green Hornet was introduced by its famous theme song, The
Flight of the Bumble Bee. The radio show was first heard on WXYZ in
Detroit, MI on this day. The show stayed on the air for 16 years. The
Green Hornet originated from the same radio station where The Lone
Ranger was performed. You may remember that the title character in The
Green Hornet was really named Britt Reid. He was, in fact, supposed to
be the great nephew of John Reid, the Lone Ranger. Both popular series
were created by George Trendle and Fran Striker.

2/2

1946 The Mutual Broadcasting System presented Twenty Questions for the
first time. Bill Slater was the master of ceremonies

2/5

1931 Eddie Cantor's long radio career got underway as he appeared on
Rudy Vallee's The Fleischmann Hour.

1940 Amanda of Honeymoon Hill debuted. Joy Hathaway starred as 'the
beauty of flaming red hair'. The program stayed for six years on NBC.

2/6

1950 NBC first broadcast Dangerous Assignment. The show starred Brian
Donlevy in the role of soldier of fortune, Steve Mitchell.

It warms my heart to see Craig and others mention the on-going contribution
Unshackled is making to the concept of old time radio.

I think it may actually be unique, in that it is truly a Network Era Radio
drama whose chain is unbroken to today.

I have had the
pleasure of being a semi-regular pool actor on the show, appearing on
about 25 of the tapings/broadcasts.

I was not aware of that, Randy. Kudos. (Folks, if you haven't been to FOTR,
Mr. Larsen has done yeoman's work with "The Chicago Group" there, for
years.)

I have had the honor of performing alongside ... golden age Chicago
radio talent ... in front of live audiences of 200-300,
with organ and full sound effects artists.

Squarely in the classic tradition. I much enjoyed doing the TWILIGHT ZONES

Past broadcasts are not archived; however, the program has a live Internet

Subject: Feb issue: RADIO RECALL

The February 2010 issue of RADIO RECALL in full-color just went out
in PDF format to all e-mail subscribers. The hard-copy (B & W only)
version will be mailed via USPO in two weeks to the other subscribers.

This issue leads off with a discussion by Colorado OTR researcher,
Stewart Wright, of the six missing "Gunsmoke" episodes. Orson Welles
is the subject of two pieces. The first is a historical review of
"The Black Museum" which he narrated; Thomas Swafford of the
Chattanooga OTR club authors this article. The second is a lengthy
review of the recent motion picture, "Me and Orson Welles," by
respected VA film critic, Rob Farr.

Esteemed Digester Elizabeth McLeod contributes a lengthy article,
explaining the development of radio situation comedy and establishes
that the "first true" sitcom was "Mr. and Mrs.," not "Amos 'n Andy"
as is generally believed. OTR's popular and prolific author, Jim Cox,
takes time off from writing his next book to review the first
biography of Perry Como, compiled by Ken Crossland & Malcolm
Macfarlane. The mystery of why a semi-pro baseball stadium in the
village of Front Royal, VA is named after Bing Crosby is explained in
this issue.

"ShorTakes," an irregular column, contains excerpts from the books
and writings of Groucho Marx, Peg Lynch, Rudy Vallee, and Norman
Corwin. The back cover is an ad from Dec 1938 Billboard magazine,
contributed by amiable researcher Derek Tague, which promotes a
variety of CBS shows; some still well known ( Mel Allen, Aunt Jenny,
Myrt & Marge, etc.) and some now obscure (Bob Bryon, Charles Stark,
Ruth Brine, etc.)

All this, plus details and contact information of all upcoming OTR
events in the country. The page of "Letters to the Editor" offers
several interesting nuggets, including: Who played Mrs.
