Hi Gang -
Regarding Charlie McCarthy and War of the Worlds broadcasts simultaneously
on NBC and CBS respectively -

Several years ago I recorded a STEREO CD which had Charlie McCarthy on one
channel and War of The Worlds on the other channel. When this CD is played,
the listener can use the 'balance' control which will allow 'tuning' from
one network to the other, or to listen to both broadcasts at the same time.

I put a batch of copies these CDs into circulation among collectors back
then. I'm sure they are still out there somewhere, plus (I suppose) copies of
them. I'm not a dealer and I do not plan to make any more copies
available in the foreseeable future. This is just to let you know that this
CD does
exist and if you can find a copy you can hear for yourself exactly what
happened on NBC and CBS that night.

Happy Listening -- Ken Piletic - Streamwood, Illinois and Alma, Arkansas

Nice comments from Craig Wichman re the "Young Abe Lincoln" re-creation at
FOTR. Of course, since he was part of that great cast, he did'nt have the
pleasure of enjoying the fellow who played Henry
[removed] Wichman. You brought it to life, young man!
You didn't try to do an impression, just did it the Fonda way, but believe me,
you "nailed it".
Blew me away!!! A highlight of the convention.
It was fun pretending with you in Escape's "Fall of The House of Usher",

Subject: FOTR recap

This year's FOTR Convention was as good as the past events. Thirty-four years
of consecutive OTR themed events is something to be proud of and next year
will mark FOTR's 35th year. Ken Stockinger gave a fascinating "Radio Was
There" presentation offering fascinating recordings of the past including a
transmission tower that collapsed on the station while they were
broadcasting. Gary Yoggy succeeded in bringing a cross-over to FOTR with "OTR
Movies with Radio Stars" and the room cheered at the conclusion of the
presentation. Craig Wichman, Edgar Russell and Richard Sloan (who I got to
meet for the first time this year) offered an interesting presentation about
Abraham Linccoln and Edgar Allan Poe on radio. Jack French offered the usual
high quality pres with a subject about Federal Investigators on radio
programs and the Gotham Radio players gave us a re-creation of a "lost"
episode of THE ADVENTURES OF THE SAINT. Thank you Gothams! I could just hear
Vincent Price's voice as the drama unfolded.

On the personal side, it was great to hang out with friends I see once or
twice a year. The best part of the conventions is the family gatherings and
the [removed] sessions/parties in the evening. I learn more behind-the-scenes
information at those sessions than I could learn by e-mail. On Friday evening
(Saturday morning at 1 am, actually), Gary Lowe and I accompanied Ken
Stockinger to downtown Newark to pick up Neal Ellis, an engineer at NPR who
made his first attendance at FOTR. Long story made short -- talk about an
experience!

I also picked up MYSTERY BROADCAST, a 1943 Republic Pictures movie about a
murder at a radio station and THE BICKERSONS TV pilots on DVD. It was great
to see Frances Langford reprising her radio role for the small screen. (Yep,
already watched the films.)

Also picked up a HUGE and HEAVY box of production material related to a radio
program of the thirties and forties that appears to be a treasure trove of
information that has never been documented (and what little has been
documented appears to be inaccurate). I transported it back home and already
I smell a future magazine article for SPERDVAC's [removed]

If anyone has never attended FOTR, or attends every few years, I recommend
next year simply because the 35th will be the best they've had yet.

 Convention on Facebook

Having just read Charlie Summers' annual pledge to put his FOTR photos
online, I just thought I'd let everyone know that The Friends of Old Time
Radio Convention Facebook page WAS updated throughout the convention,
including several hundred photographs provided by at least three
photographers (me, John Buxbaum and Steven M. Lewis, although there might be
more by now). You can scroll back through the posts and comments to see
what we were up to as it was happening.

So if there is anyone on the list who IS on Facebook but IS NOT already a
"fan" of the Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, please find our page and
become one so you don't miss updates in the future.

You can also see the photo albums our correspondents have contributed.

Enjoy,

Subject: Hallowe'en on "Those were the Days"

In the wake of Chris Holm's post about Hallowe'en radio, I hope all of you
can join me this Saturday for "Those Were The Days," and our annual
Hallowe'en show. We'll include Peter Lorre in "The Mask of Medusa," as well
as Inner Sanctum, Quiet Please, the very first episode of Results,
Incorporated (starring Lloyd Nolan and Claire Trevor), Hallowe'en-related fun
from Eve Arden and Bob Hope--and very possibly a few trick or treaters as
well.

"Those Were The Days" airs every Saturday from 1 to 5 pm CST on WDCB

Subject: Final comments on Anaheim, Azusa and Cicamonga

I loved Dick Habegger's post on his memoires of the KFI fruit fruit reports
in the winter seasons. I passed it on to Newcomb Weisenberger, who was
Floyd Young's engineer between 1947 and 1956, when Young retired. He had
worked for the Weather Bureau, since 1917. He started the fruit frost
reports and warnings, after a bad freeze in 1913 destroyed about 60% of
California's citrus crops.

I'm not sure if Newcomb has longer recordings of Young's voice. I would bet
that he pronounced Cucamonga normally. My feeling is that the joke was used
on the Jack Benny radio shows partly because those three towns had funny
sounding names, even to the locals in the Benny studio audience in
Hollywood, and partly because the passenger and freight rail lines in
Southern California did not connect to all three communities. It's hard to
imagine in today's California, but the agriculture and ranching industries
were still huge in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino
Counties in the 1940s. Anaheim, Azusa and Cucamonga were all very small
towns that one in the urban area of Los Angeles might pass through on a
Sunday drive in the country, but not big travel destinations at the time,
except for those who lived and worked there.

Subject: Jack Benny's Anaheim

I wanted to add that there's a very nice article on the internet, which has
been around for close to 10 years. If you have not read "Jack Benny's
Anaheim", it is a most interesting article about how the "Anaheim, Azusa,
and Cucamonga" train announcer jokes on the Benny shows brought much
attention to those three towns, and made them more famous than the town
leaders in each community could ever have dreamed. The article also details
Benny's visits to Anaheim over the years. I lived in Anaheim for 20 years.
When I moved there in 1965, the orange groves were still around, but were
disappearing fast for housing tracts, etc.
