Subject: Book on Announcers
I going to guess the book Tom Michael was thinking of is:
"Golden Throats and Silver Tongues: The Radio Announcers"
written by Ray Poindexter (River Road Press 1978)
Used copies of this abound on the Internet and <[removed]> has five
different copies, starting at $ [removed] plus S & H.

Subject: The Hayloft Gang DVD
The Hayloft Gang: The Story of the National Barndance is now officially
released on DVD.
This is the story of the WLS Chicago radio program that introduced many
country and western artists to America. The documentary was shown on PBS
in September, 2011. The DVD includes lots of extra stuff and is a worthy
production. I was a supporter of the project to release this program on
DVD and have had my copy for several months. Apart from that, I have no
connection with the program or the DVD. I do enjoy it and recommend it
to all.
The format is widescreen 16x9 with portions cropped for 4x3 film
segments. The DVD is a DVD-R disc and plays in all modern DVD players as
far as I know. It's available from the official website as well as Amazon.

Subject: Eleanor Roosevelt's Radio Shows
I was recently contacted by Mary Jo Binker, Editor of the Eleanor Roosevelt
Papers at George Washington University in Washington, DC. She is trying to
locate all of the broadcasts (either in audio, scripts, and/or both) in which
that distinguished lady was featured. Binker has already searched the
archives of the Audio/Visual section of the Library of Congress, the FDR
Library in Hyde Park, NY, the Library of American Broadcasting at Univ of
Maryland, and the NBC collection at the Univ of Wisconsin. While she has
obtained audio copies of several programs, there are many others she needs to
find. Many of these were sustained, but some were sponsored; nearly all were
15 minutes in length.
The total inventory of what Binker has and what she is still missing is too
extensive for this posting. But I will summarize it, listing dates, network,
and name of program (if known) so that Digesters can check their holdings to
see if any appear in their collections. If any of these programs show up in
their own inventory (either audio or scripts) I'd ask them to contact Binker
at <mjbinker@[removed]; You may also email her if you have any promising leads
for her to follow up on.
NBC (title unknown) weekly Dec 1932 to Mar 1933, sponsored Pond's Cold Cream,
missing all 14 broadcasts.
CBS (title unknown) weekly Nov to Dec 1934, missing all 6 broadcasts
CBS "It's a Woman's World", weekly Feb to Apr 1935, missing all 10 broadcasts
NBC (title unknown) weekly, Apr to Jul 1937, sponsored by Pond's Cold Cream,
missing 11 of the total 13 broadcasts
NBC "Over Our Coffee Cups" weekly Sep 1941 to Apr 1942, sponsored by
Pan-American Coffee Bureau, missing 7 of the total 28 broadcasts
After the death of FDR in 1945, she continued on the radio on the
following programs, while serving in various official capacities of the
United Nations.
ABC "Eleanor and Anna Roosevelt Program" 3X weekly Nov 1948 to Feb 1949, 5X
weekly Mar 1949 to Sep 1949. Missing 151 of the total 176 broadcasts
NBC "Eleanor Roosevelt Program" 5X weekly from Oct 1950 to Sep 1951. Missing
only 8 of the total of approximately 235 broadcasts.
Thanks for all your help,
Jack French

I hadn't seen this before, from 2013:

Includes a brief sound bite with Shirley Ann Maylock, who was on the
show as a child.
And just for fun, here's one on sound effects from 1933:

Is one of those actors John Todd? I see some similarity.
