Hey Kathy, why not give your friend a membership in SPERDVAC instead? We
have HUNDREDS of Sergeant Prestons, first generation, on CD or cassette.
Your friend could listen to them til the cows come home. :)

Subject: Bring your books to Newark
Someone on this list suggested that authors should advise readers if they'll
be in attendance at the FOTR convention this week in Newark and thereby let
folks know to bring their books for signing. Count me among the group; I'll
be delighted to sign your books. While I won't have texts for sale there,
Jay Hickerson usually has an author's newest volume (published within the
last year) in limited quantities which in my case is "Music Radio: The
Great Performers and Programs of the 1920s through Early 1960s," just
released. If you'll also bring along your copy of any of the following,
I'll be delighted to autograph it for you:
"The Great Radio Soap Operas"
"The Great Radio Audience Participation Shows"
"Say Goodnight, Gracie: The Last Years of Network Radio"
"Radio Crime Fighters: Over 300 Programs from the Golden Age"
"Frank and Anne Hummert's Radio Factory: The Programs and Personalities of
Broadcasting's Most Prolific Producers"
"Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons: A Complete History and Episode Log of
Radio's Most Durable Detective"

Yep. Of course, the operative word is "right."
I respect where some Grand Old Men who loath "restoration" are coming from;
when I got serious about this stuff, about 25 (!) years ago now, the very
word was considered dirty. But there is a NIGHT AND DAY difference between
properly done digital work, and the early "restorations" like bad false
stereo,
terrible slight echo rolled in to fill out thin sound, and excreble
"equalization-" that even in the case of folks like Radio Spirits, who
generally knew
better, sometimes resulted in "surface noise removal" that was just the
laying
of a muffled blanket over the sound.
Shows should sound like the First Gen people's
(well, most of their sets at least), or Terry
Salomsonson's
Ditto, and ditto, and - don't leave out Ed Carr!

of the new [removed]
[removed]
OK this is the one that finally sent me over the top.
haha Full of platitudes, factual errors, and the
usual tiresome grass-was-greener-50-years-ago routine.
However, it does point up what I've found to be the
most interesting aspect of the reaction to the movie,
and I wonder what some of you guys think explains it.
The reviews have been positively and perhaps
predictably glowing. I haven't seen it yet, but by
all accounts the thing is quite well-produced and
enacted. But of course it never stops there. "The
right movie at the right time!" gushes (ironically)
the New York Post. That's political polemic, not film
criticism.
Alternately, a review on [removed], a prominent
conservative blog which played a big part in downing
Dan Rather, found "Morrow" (sic) appearing to be "a
hack". That is equally ignorant, of course.
Even on this list, we see comments implying Gilbert
Seldes' Murrow criticism can't be trusted because he
once impugned Jack Benny! And, a couple weeks ago,
the reaction to the very first link to a critical
article here: someone compared the author to
"O'Brien".
Finally, there is the response of the *media* critics
to the film, versus the movie critics. Unexpectedly,
and literally for the first time in decades, we are
getting a genuine, honest reappraisal of the Murrow
legacy--and the results aren't following the usual
party line. Neal Gabler (a reliable liberal and
brilliant media analyst) wrote in the New York Times
that far from symbolizing a better era, Murrow
actually helped *begin* the cult of personality and
opinion that's led directly to O'Reilly and Limbaugh.
On [removed], Jack Shafer (also hardly a firebrand
Republican), described the journalistic controversy
that followed the Murrow broadcast. That stuff's not
new to people on this list, but it's likely
eye-opening to most 'civilians'.
So what's the deal?? Why the so-passionate reaction?
Why can't people leave politics out of discussions of
what is, at bottom, a piece of entertainment? Why
can't movie reviewers stick to what they know, and
resist pontificating (usually ludicrously) upon the
glory days of the golden years, versus the
supposedly-sorry current state of broadcasting? Why,
after all these years, can't others acknowledge that
critics of Murrow might have had a point? "Quiz
Show" didn't inspire this type of almost vicious back
and forth--
why does this?

Subject: Science Fiction Question
Hello,
I'm a collector (who isn't these days, of one thing or another) of
contemporary spoken word and radio drama, specifically Joe Frank. I'm
one of the original founders of the Frankophiles Joe Frank List (now
defunct).
I've been contracted to write a short article on the topic of Science
Fiction radio broadcasts and their influence on modern serialized
science fiction on radio and podcasts.
If there are knowledgeable science fiction radio drama collectors out
there who would be willing to answer a few questions about the genre,
specifically regarding X Minus One, Dimension X, 2000 Plus and
especially regarding BBC productions, which I am having a hard time
finding information about, I'd love to have an opportunity to email a
few questions.
This isn't a paying gig, so all I have to offer is my thanks. And
hopefully the opportunity to bring an awareness of OTR to an
appropriate audience - without making any glaring errors. The OTR
community seems pretty friendly and the subject isn't well documented
in mainstream media.
Thanks in advance.
