This Week's Classics & Curios Show:

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 137

CLUB FIFTEEN: BOB CROSBY & MARGARET WHITING

By the mid 1940's singers had been taking the spotlight away from the
big bands as a result of the war which, of course, brought multiple
problems to bands involving the military draft, increasing expenses of
touring and recording, and singers being featured on more and more
comedy-variety radio shows, especially on fifteen minute music shows.

One such fifteen minute radio show was the popular "Club Fifteen" which
employed various singers such as Dick Haymes, Helen Forrest, the Andrews
Sisters, Evelyn Knight, and Gisele MacKenzie. "Club Fifteen" was
sponsored by Campbell Soups and aired regularly on week nights. On this
episode of "Classics & Curios Song & Smile Time" we'll hear two "Club
Fifteen" broadcasts on CBS with Bob Crosby and Margaret Whiting from
1947, the year the program made its debut. The Modernaires and Jerry
Gray and his orchestra are also featured.

Particularly enjoyable on these two broadcasts are tunes like "I Don't
Know Why I Should Cry Over You," "You Do," and "( I Love to Hang Around)
The Lazy Countryside." Two extra-oldies show up in the form of "Sweet
Kentucky Babe," "The Little Old Mill (Went Round and Round)," and "When
You're Out in Your Stanley Steamer." Perhaps the best of all are "You're
An Old Smoothie," a duet with Bob and Margaret, and "Someone to Watch
Over Me," performed by Margaret.

YouTube versions of Bob and of Margaret are readily available online, of
course. The Bobcats' jazz performances are many and great, although my
favorite is still "Big Noise from Winnetka." Among Margaret's best
perhaps are "My Foolish Heart," "My Ideal," "Moonlight in Vermont," and
"You Do." Margaret took on the presidency of the Johnny Mercer
Foundation toward the end of her career and when she was performing in
New York graciously took time to talk to this unknown "codger kid" from
Nebraska and do a lengthy interview on YesterdayUSA.
