Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: cassettes to MP3
I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have collected OTR for
about 15 years and have a basement full of cassette tapes-several thousand hours of
programming. My wife and I have reluctantly decided to move in the 21st century.
Would someone out there tell me (off line, of course) how to convert my cassettes
to MP3s on the computer. I have the latest Mac computer with all the updates
current. Thank you in advance, youse guys seem to collectively know almost
everything.

Subject: Jack Benny''s copy of a radio script
I recently acquired what is for me a Holy Grail of OTR: the actual script
Jack Benny used in one of his radio shows.
He has pencilled in several changes, and you can still see what had been
there before. The changes definitely make the show funnier!
The title page is marked "PROGRAM #2 - REVISED SCRIPT". Several entire
paragraphs are crossed out, and I am assuming these parts were dropped when
the rehearsal ran overtime. Does anyone know if that's how they did it? And
does anyone have any idea why the name of one of the characters was changed
from Ryan to Jones?
I've posted the first three pages of the script at

Subject: Old Time Radio Basics
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
May I suggest one addition to Chris Holm's fine article on "Learning about Old
Time Radio/"
Those of us who have broadcast programs on AM/FM radio, satellite and the
Internet, have
presented thousands of hours of OTR shows with commentary and interviews with
the original
participants: actors, writers, directors, producers. etc. We have also
presented untold hours of interviews with those who study OTR and publish
academic and popular books on the subject.
There are a great many sources for retrospective OTR programs which can be
heard world-wide every day. Charlie's Old Time Radio Digest and his blogs
talk about OTR and shows one can hear, in their daily postings. Google "Old
Time Radio" for an amazing selection.
I would modestly suggest that Jerry Haendiges' Olde Tyme Radio Network
presents several hours of programming in very good quality every week.
Yesterday USA, and many other
"networks" and sites also present OTR and there are great clubs like SPERDVAC
that can provide more information than you can imagine. Online clubs now
exist too.
A new generation of listeners is out there now, and are constantly
"discovering" OTR. Those of us who present OTR try to re-introduce the story
of early radio and what a fantastic medium it was for 30+ years.

Subject: Voice identification help from "Rocky and His
Friends"
Somewhat off-topic ... I hope the editor will forgive me ...
I've been enjoying my Bullwinkle DVDs of late, in many instances due to the
strong presence of such classic radio actors doing the voice work, bringing
to life fabulous writing.
There's one voice in there that is a dead-on Ed Gardner (Duffy's Tavern)
impression ... or is it Gardner himself? He's not credited at the end,
unless he's one of "A Host of Others."
Does anyone know if Ed was involved in these cartoons?
Thanks!

A friend of mine told me earlier this month that General Mills once had a
cereal called Cheery Oats and due to a lawsuit from Quaker Oats, had to
change the product name to Cheerios. He said he remembered the different
commercials on either radio or television. I'm more interested in the lawsuit
part. Anyone know if this was true?

Roby McHone asked for some information about Unit 99.
I'm aware of 43 circulating episodes that date from 23 August 1957
thru 13 Jun 1958 usually with police Sgt Dan Meredith providing the
tape recording coverage of actual Sacramento police call responses.
Long time Sacramento Police Chief James Hicks was billed as the host
and radio station KFBK chief announcer and special events director
Tony Koester directed the program. I believe that KFBK was the local
ABC affiliate at that time.

Chris Holm gave one answer as to how to educate a newcomer about OTR.
Naturally, the best introduction would be to have lived through the era,
but that;a hardly practical. The next-best would be to have access to
large numbers of transcriptions of old shows. To an extent, books like
Jim Harmon's /The Great Radio Heroes/ can give a newcomer the perspective
of one who lived back then, in the period.
There are, however, other means of visiting or revisiting the world of
OTR other than try transcriptions of the old shows.
Better Little Books and larger hardcover books, all aimed at younger
readers, "novelized" some adventures from the program, (Because the
Captain Midnight program had spinoffs -- a newspaper comic strip and a
comic book, adventures from the other sources were a;lso novelized.
/Captain Midnight and the Secret Squadron/,/Captain Midnight ... vs, the
Terror of the Orient/, and /Joyce of The Secret Squadron/ were all
derived from the radio shoe. and all were bylined by R. [removed] Winterbotham
are the only Whitman adaptations of the OTR shows.)
Whitman also published novelized Jack Armstrong adventures.
Although not intended for the purpose, the Whitman novelizations have
preserved significant OTR stories for posterity.

Subject: OTR resource
One resource I use which I've found extremely helpful is "Don't Touch That Dial"
by Fred J MacDonald. It offers background, as well as other information, on a variety
of subjects dealing with OTR. Every chapter covers a different genre (comedy, drama,
detective shows, game/quiz programming, variety shows, etc). It's definitely a good
read and a good resource.
As always,
Kenneth Clarke
