Subject: Father Knows Best
A (long) while ago I groused that I had made a mistake in buying
a "Father Knows Best" collection from First Generation Radio
Archives ... not that they weren't fine technically; they were.
It was just that the shows were from the first of the series.
Man, was it bad ... as I said then, Jim Anderson was a
first-class self-centered whiny jerk.
Good news! FGRA is offering low-generation CDs of the series from
1953-54. Now this is the Anderson family as I remember them ...
more in line with the personas of the TV series that was to
follow.
(Usual disclaimer applies - I have no connection with FGRA other
than being a customer.)

While perusing some more old newletters on [removed], I've been reading
through Bob Vito's "Stay Tuned"., published by "Sound Tapes of the
Past". In the Sept '71 issue he mentions Frank Bresee releasing a copy
(and he, Bob Vito, having a copy) of a half (second half) episode of a
7-2-48 episode of The Fat Man. I can't find this episode - does it exist?
I *think* Bob Vito was the gent I got a lo-gen cassette of "Graves of
Whamperjaw Texas", when I was trying to track down the lowest gen copies
possible of ILAM shows. This was in c. 2000 - if it's the same Bob Vito,
does anyone know if he's still around?

Glad to hear that continues under your big umbrella.

That is really wonderful.
The first forty years of Network Radio fandom have been a success. Here's to
the next forty; the farther it's primary era recedes into the past, the more
this little gem of an American medium demands preservation, & a living
celebration.

I was happy to hear about Fred Allen's book "Treadmill to Oblivion"
being re-released. He also wrote another book titled "Much Ado About
Me" which I was fortunate enough to find at a second hand book store.
It chronicles his life from birth, his various jobs, and his rise to fame on
radio. It provides a unique backstory regarding this very talented radio
performer.

I have been rereading Harry Bartell's wonderful recollection of his
time spent in radio, "Struts and Frets," which appeared in this
digest a couple of years ago. What a delight to read. In his
recollection he mentions the fact that he worked with Abigal Van
Buren of "Dear Abby" fame. Does anybody know if any of these shows
exist? I have been collection old time radio shows for almost 40
years and have yet to come across one.

Subject: scary show from childhood
Sometime around, I think, 1948 I heard a radio show that absolutely
terrified me. It was about a man who had one hoof and one foot. I can't even
remember what he did (murder people I guess) but it was the sound of him
slowly approaching that was so scary to a seven-year-old. I'm sure the sound
effect was very simply done - all you'd need would be an open hand and the
knuckles of a closed fist alternatively 'walking' on a flat surface. Does
anyone remember this show?
