It is true that many of us are not as impartial toward TV as we are toward
radio, especially because radio as it used to be basically ceased at the
hands of TV, but I didn't want to give the impression that I believed that
all of TV was no good and there were not comparable types of programs. I can
think of many examples when TV shined, such as the early 1950's, when TV was
in its infancy and there were a lot of underemployed radio actors and the
networks regularly broadcast live dramas and anthologies. Rod Serling got
his start at this point and one program of note was his life
executive-boardroom drama "Patterns". Also, there was likely a live version
of the movie "12 Angry Men" and many other people showcased their talents,
such as Paddy Chayevsky ("Marty"). There were high points in TV's early life
as well as low points in radio (Meet the Meeks; My Son Jeep, etc.) I have
seen a lot of early TV drama and it is good.

Subject: SUSPENSE TV sets

Actually, the DVD set of SUSPENSE TV shows is volume one. What hasn't been
publicized yet is that there will actually be two more volumes in the coming
year. About 90 episodes will be released total, 30 episodes per set. All
of them are transfers from the kinescopes and licensed through
CBS-Television. Volume 2 will also have an episode with Boris Karloff.
Contrary to what has been posted on the web on web-sites, the episode with
Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes is NOT going to be among the 90 episodes
being released.

For those attending FOTR, the box set of volume one containing 30 episodes
will be available at a discount price at Newark in October.

Question. Can someone fill me in? I have a bunch of zerox copies of RADIO
NOSTALGIA magazine, and I would like to know the background on this
periodical. Also, there are comic strips based on radio characters that
appear to be originals for this magazine. Who drew those?

Subject: SUSPENSE AT FOTR IN OCTOBER

Martin Grams's very knowledgeable insight into the great SUSPENSE radio show
series has reminded me to remind any and all of you to join us at the annual
Friends of Old Time Radio, FOTR Convention in Newark starting October 18th.
I am honored to report that I have been cast in the re-enactment of a
SUSPENSE show THE IMPOSTERS written by Peter Fernandez and directed by him
starring
Arthur Anderson and an all-star cast of people not yet known to me!
I am thrilled to report that after I spoke with Peter and did my best vocal
impersonation of the guy who intones in basso profundo the immortal lines,
"And now, a tale well calculated to keep you [removed], I was given the
part!!!
In response to those readers who have written me off line to request when
and if I will be attending this year's FOTR, the answer is very yes.
I am also in an episode of HARRY LIME with Lucy Arnaz.
Gonna be some great folks there. Panels of stars. Lots of funs stuff for
sale.
Many more radio thrills and delights will make up three great days in Newark
so come on and join us.
Meet the stars of the original broadcasts and dine like Kings and Queens.

Frank Green asked for sources of OTR programs, including some "less well
known shows." SPERDVAC (the Society to Preserve and Encourage Radio Drama,
Variety and Comedy) is a wonderful source. Frank, and others on the Digest
who
are interested, can e-mail their names and addresses to _SPERDVAC@[removed]_
(mailto:SPERDVAC@[removed]) . Your inquiry will get you a sample newsletter
and
CD with some programs. SPERDVAC's website includes a link to the index
listing of some 20,000 OTR broadcasts. Check out _[removed]_
([removed]) and see what you think. Lots of shows which
originated with
SPERDVAC have been shamelessly sold by OTR peddlers, so I guess some people
like
what we offer.

Of course, Stan Freburg parodied this a bit later with his "Puffed Grass"
advertisements as the supposed sponsor of "Bang Gunley, [removed] Marshal Fields"
. . . "of course, a cast-iron bowl helps!"

The jingle was: "...chock full of vitamins and chlorophyll too/If it's good
for Bossy (moooooo), it's good for me and you!"
