Subject: Sarge and Tonto ride again
Yesterday, I wrote, that the actor who voiced Sgt. Burke--whomever that may
have been-- voiced Tonto on the "Lone Ranger" episode "Single Tracks",
broadcast Aug. 24, 1945.
By any interesting coincidence, today I started listening to the episode "The
Western Way", from Aug. 21, 1946. Again, the Sarge actor is voicing Tonto.

In a salute to CFRC's 90 years, Howard Bonner presents a 'History Of Radio Programming'.
The HISTORY is the early years 1921 - 1941 and is the history of Cincinnati's WLW - The NATION's STATION which was owned by the Crosley Family who at one point in time sold most of the radios in NORTH AMERICA.
Schedules and LIVE Band performances began here. The first Drama written specifically for radio was at WLW, Doris Day, Dinah Shore, FATS WALLER, the MILLS Brothers, Red Barber, the baseball announcer, commercials and oh so much more with excerpts from shows of the day.
It all begins Sat. Feb 4th at 11am and runs every Saturday at 1/2 hr. installments for 6 weeks in celebration of 90 years of the oldest continually broadcasting radio station in Canada.

From: Ken Stockinger<bambino032004-otr@[removed];
the Lone Ranger (as originally created) did not
have a first name. Martin Grams researched this a few years back
and found that giving the Ranger the first name of John came about during the
filming of "The Legend of the Lone Ranger" in 1981.
Thank you for posting this information. I thought the first name of
John originated in some book about The Lone Ranger sometime in the
mid-1960s. I think someone mentioned that in this forum some years ago.
what's clear is that the first name John was never mentioned in either
the radio or television show or any of the premiums or spinoffs that
accompanied them. I once had a miniature comic book from Cheerios
telling The Lone Ranger's origin story, and while the name Reid was
given, there was no mention anywhere of a first name.
Of course, that's because The Lone Ranger's first name is "The."

Subject: Ranger's first name
Ken Stockinger wrote to comment on some earlier posts and once again
mentioned the fiction that the Lone Ranger's first name was John. As has
been pointed out many times in this forum, Fran Striker was very particular
never to give the masked rider a first name. But Ken is not quite accurate
about where the fiction began. The 1981 movie was not the culprit. It
began, according to Dave Holland, with a book titled "The Big Broadcast", a
tribute to radio from 1920 to 1950 published in 1972 by Frank Buxton and
Bill Owen. We have these gentlemen to thank.

Subject: February issue RADIO RECALL
The full-color version in PDF went out this morning to Radio Recall
subscribers who chose that format. The hard-copy, black & white
version will be mailed to the other subscribers after February 10th.
This issue leads off with the life story of Connee Boswell by
historican Cort Vitty. All of us recall the Boswell Sisters, but how
many know Connee was stricken with polio and was unable to walk since
age 3. Her career triumphs are a tribute, not just to her courage,
but the strong support of her family.
Stewart Wright, well-known OTR researcher, details the radio career
of John Dehner, under the title of "The Reluctant Westerner." Stewart
lists not only Dehner's broadcast success, but also his movie roles
in westerns.
Kathy Hammel brings us up to date with seven years work of
researching the aviation hero, "Howie Wing", as she summarizes all
the factual data compiled by her, along with those of her associates
in Canada and Australia. This is cooperative OTR research at its best.
The book, "Out of the Dark: A History of Radio and Rural America" by
Steve Craig is reviewed in this issue. Craig chose this title because
radio provided for the first time to rural, isolated Americans access
to entertainment, news, and the rapidly evolving lifestyles of the
entire nation.
All this plus details of upcoming OTR conventions, letters to the
editor, and YouTube sites where you can view the programs from
meetings of Metro Washington Old Time Radio Club.
