Subject: gary giddins
I read somewhere that the single essay about Jack Benny in Gary Giddins'
2006 book Natural Selection: Gary Giddins on Comedy, Film, Music, and Books
was worth the price of the book, so I went ahead and bought it. Now I wish I
could remember where I read that plug, because I'd like to clobber the guy
who wrote it.
The essay on Benny is mildly interesting, but is mostly rehashed information
from his biographies. I was taken aback, however, by a statement at the end
of the essay, in which Giddins asserts that Benny's "radio shows are largely
inaccessible to contemporary tastes, as are virtually all radio shows from
the pre-TV era." I know that not everybody cares for Old Time Radio, but
what would prompt someone to baldly state such a piece of rubbish?
Earlier in the essay, Giddins analyzes the side characters of Benny's show
and points out that Mr. Kitzel is the only character who "doesn't treat
Benny like a jerk." Never thought of that, and I suppose it's true. But then
Giddins calls Kitzel's jokes "corny" and says flat-out that "Mr. Kitzel
isn't nearly as funny as the other characters." What's with this guy? Kitzel
was great fun, had wonderful lines, and had such an endearing voice. Just
listen to the audience when he's at the mike: people can't wait to laugh!
This book is a few years old, so maybe it was already discussed here. If so,
I don't remember. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? The book is a
collection of things written over the years--the Benny piece was done in
1985, actually. There are 82 essays in the book, on Bob Hope, Bob Dylan,
Cole Porter, [removed] King, Doris Day, Ralph Ellison, Sammy Davis, Jr.,...
How much bad information am I going to be taking on if I read more of this
book?

Jack French passes this along:
"I don't know if any of you were aware of this, but Robert Newman of
Cincinnati recently suffered two serious falls.
In his newsletter, RLL on the Air, he enclosed a note saying on June 16th
he took a four foot fall onto a hard surface, face first, seriously
injuring his back and cracking his ribs. His right arm was also badly
damaged. Later, while in recovery, he was inspecting some storm damage
(tree down) on his property on June 26th, got tangled in the debris, and
fell hard on his damaged shoulder. He now has only limited use of his
right arm and is recovering very slowly."
More about this on the Cincinnati OTR board, [removed] .
