Subject: "SIGH" I missed Cincy.

Hello, all.
[removed]
It happened.
I missed the Cincy Con for the first time since 1999. :(
A combination of no money, school scheduling, and personal matters caused me
to miss what I now think of as the best time of the year for me.
Sounds like the proverbial good time was had by all and I wish I could have
been a part of it. However, I am planning on attending the FOTR again this
year and I am hoping to to connect with some of you there, kids.
I thought about you gys all weekend and sent you lots of positive, happy
thoughts. I did really mis the warm, fuzzy feeling of getting hugged by the
wonderful women in the Hughes family. I hope everyone is doing well.
Until later: bye-bye and buy bonds!

Subject: Major Bowes

Does anyone know if any of the Major Bowes radio shows exist?
At a recent program I gave on
"Before they were famous - Radio stars you know from TV and the Movies"
a person mentioned that her mother was a guest / performer on a Major Bowes
show.
The only info she could give me was her mothers maiden name Shirly Pesetzner
and the date was somtime in the early 1930's
I told her I would pass along the info, but did not offer much hope.

"Uncle Russ" now has his own web site, which features memorabilia

this show as a kid, Thompson would love to hear from you now. You can
email him at <russ@[removed];

The web site of Russ works fine and I urge you to visit it soon. Not
only can you view some delightful fan letters from kids of 50 years
ago, you can also see pix of his celebrity guests: Frankie Laine,
Lucille Ball, Chief Thundercloud, Dawes Butler etc. While Russ was
doing the show in Hollywood for AFRS it was a little easier to get
guest stars than it was after AFRS transferred him to Japan where he
did the last two years of his Saturday morning show for the kids.

Due to a small software glitch on his web site (built by a friend) the
email address under "Contact us" does not work. It's the one I listed
above in my first announcement. So I telephoned Russ and got his actual
email address, <loveuncleruss@[removed]; and you can reach him at
this address.

Incidentally he told me that his show consisted of the original disks
of "Let's Pretend" which AFRS then deleted all commercials,
announcements, and anything prohibited by war-time regulations, leaving
Russ with about 10 minutes to fill in this half hour show. He did it by
creating his own kid-friendly characters and their voices.

I noticed the name of Walter Slezak on the birth/death list recently.
That name sounded very familiar for some reason. Was he a lead actor,
or was he also known as a character actor as well? BTW, is he any
relation to soap opera actress, Erica Slezak? If anyone knows of some
memorable roles he portrayed on OTR, please let me know. I believe
he was in several movies playing older gentlemen during that time as well.

Subject: Help for New Cruise

The Portland Spirit, one of Portland, Oregon's cruise ships, is preparing to
establish a new cruise for Halloween. The Cinnamon Bear Cruise in late
November and December has proved highly popular and profitable. Now, the
ship's host wants a Halloween cruise based on an original radio show,
preferably one designed for children. Old time radio is alive and well in
Portland!

Do any of you have suggestions? The ship builds sets and designs costumes
for its actors. Then children travel between the three decks to discover the
story. Can you think of a radio show which could be the Halloween inspiration?

Dennis Crow

Any help would be much appreciated.
