Subject: Re: Two Questions
Stan Delahoyde asks, "Why did all, or most, of the titles of the Dragnet
shows start with '[removed]'?"
That's the great unanswered question, because nobody who's still around
really knows (or cares). I didn't want to speculate in my book, MY NAME'S
FRIDAY, so I just ignored [removed] but here's my guess:
Every episode of any series needs a title, if only for record-keeping
purposes. "Dragnet's" radio shows started out with just "Production #1, #2,
etc. After four weeks of that, the scripts used the crime, plus the name of
either the perp or victim in the title; [removed] "Helen Corday Murder" (week 5)
and "Truck Hijackers - Tom Laval" (week 18). Or they'd use the division and a
name ("Forgery: Johnny Casco, Marty Breen", week 23).
During Week 20, the episode was about making a major narcotics buy, so they
titled it "The Big Buy." Then they went back to using titles with the names
of the characters. For weeks 33 and 34, they did a two-parter about a major
heroin kingpin, titled "The Big Man." Then, the episode for week 36 was the
"female" hitch-hiker, which they titled "The Big Girl." The next week was a
tale about a confidence man (aka grifter), so they called it "The Big
Grifter."
Apparently at that point, Webb and/or others decided to use the "Big" device
to label each episode. Again it was surely more for record-keeping purposes
than anything else, but it also kept things simple. It was probably deemed
too confusing to keep having "Murder," "Juvenile," "Narcotics"-titled stories.
However hokey they sounded, the titles didn't detract from the realism,
because (except for very infrequent mentions) they were never heard by
listeners. Today, it's understandably confusing for the average hobbyist,
especially when one considers an episode like "The Big Cliff" (#107) which
was not titled for its plot or any character, but for the actor - Cliff
Arquette - portraying the suspect.

I can remember using that expression; it was very common. But why was "Jew's
Harp" replaced by "Jaw Harp"? I don't think it ever carried any negative
connotation. Finally, I'll relate an experience I had when I was around
5-years old (70-years ago). It's a story I've never told to anyone, but now
seems to be the right time. Anyway, I had a friend who lived around the
corner from me, and I visited him at his apartment from time to time (I still
have a vague memory of his building and walking up the steps to enter it.
Now, I had two other friends who lived on the same street as me, only a few
houses from mine, and they weren't friends of the other boy. One day they
started calling him a "dirty jew". It was like a chant. Unfortunately, so did
I. I didn't know what a jew was, or what made them dirty, but I became part
of the mob of three. I don't believe I ever saw him again.
I forgot about that incident. I can't remember what brought the memory back
to me, or exactly when it did, but I've thought about it many times since
then. I keep thinking about how he must have felt when someone he thought was
his friend turned against him.

Funny you should ask about organ music on radio shows.
One of the best radio organists was Rosa Rio, who worked on many soaps, and
even had her own show on NBC.
You can hear her and her music on WTIC's "Golden Age of Radio" from 1971 at

In the very late 50's I had the pleasure of working on a couple of soap
operas at CBS in New York as an Associate Director and my recollection is
that the person playing the organ did not have any sheet music in front of
him, so my guess would be that they pretty much played ad lib. Keep in mind
that they usually had been playing on the show for quite some time so knew
the routine and what to play when.
