Interesting. I've never seen this in any of the sources I've read,
including books by Groucho, his son, and Robert Dwan. I'd be very
interested to know where you get this information from.
I also thought Groucho's show was transcribed in advance from the very
beginning, and that's actually why it started out on ABC, because they were the most
tolerant network of pre-recorded series at that point. Bing Crosby's "Philco
Radio Time" is usually mentioned as having influenced the planning of the
show, in my experience.

Let end all the talk about La Rosa bing fired or not I did a Google
search and found [removed]
This web site is Julius's own story and his conclusion is that Godfrey
is /was not a nice man. He was fired on the air. I head that broadcast
Arthur said in essence that Julius was to big for britches and had lost
his humility.

Subject: Recovered memory
In an aside in the Godfrey discussion, A. Joseph Ross noted
I once had an argument online with someone who was
sure she had seen film of LBJ's swearing-in aboard Air
Force One, when the historical record is clear that there
was one still picture taken, and that's all.
No that's not all. You will notice in the picture there is a dictating
machine microphone. The audio of the oath was recorded on a Dictabelt that
is now in the LBJ Library. Mix that often reproduced recording with a
camera moving around on the photo and you have an understandably mistaken
memory of seeing a film.
And as a trial lawyer, I know very well the unreliability of witnesses'
memories.

Subject: Green Hornet
Not sure if it was previously mentioned, but it seems that Green Hornet
Inc. has sold film rights to Columbia Pictures to produce a big screen
version of the radio hero. Several outlet articles mention that they
will draw from all media that the Hornet has appeared to create the
film. The downside (imo) is that the guy developing it is the same guy
who developed the film GridIron Gang with "The Rock" starring.
So I guess we'll have to see, but I don't hold any hope it will bear a
resemblance to our radio hero.

Subject: LBJ swearing-in/Arthur Godfrey
hi all --

At the risk of being the 13th person to respond with this information:
there was also a sound recording of the swearing-in, on a Dictabelt.
LBJ is almost inaudible on it, but it's out there and has often been
used in documentaries (it's also available in sound files out on the
'net, too). In some of the pictures of the swearing-in, someone can be
seen holding the Dictaphone microphone up to Judge Hughes.
Thanks as always to Lee Munsick for continuing to astonish and amaze
with his knowledge of things related to Mr. Godfrey. I'm looking
forward to his next post, in the next few days (please don't keep us
waiting *too* long, Lee -- please!) :)
Jodie Peeler

Subject: Specific drinks
Jim Burns asks what the radio heroes drink. When I was a
kid, I read all the "Saint" stories-- still have them packed
away somewhere. His drink was scotch, specifically "Peter
Dawson Scotch." As I recall, he changed brands in the radio
series or TV or movies-- or all three.
