Subject: Re: Question about XM
I've got XM, and I love it. Unfortunately, I can't recommend it for OTR. They
do have a 24/7 OTR channel, but it plays mostly edited shows like the ones
you'd hear on "When Radio Was." If you don't mind that kind of presentation,
great. They do play a pretty good variety of shows. They also have a channel
called Sonic Theater, which plays some great NTR.
For my money, it's a great investment. For a monthly subscription of less
than 50 cents a day, you get an incredible array of news, music, talk,
comedy, etc. The daily Bob Edwards Show is wonderful. Also, if you're a
baseball fan, XM is the place to be.
Usual disclaimers apply.

Re the girl "rescued from her stranded car by police" storyline: This
is one of the more famous urban legends, documented in ten books on
urban legends, and sometimes titled, "The Boyfriend's Death."
The tale dates back to at least 1964 and has been incorporated into
several movies and TV shows, including DEAD POETS SOCIETY (1989),
URBAN LEGEND (1998), SUGAR AND SPICE (2001), the TV series MILLENNIUM
(1998) and the British TV series THE VICAR OF DIBLEY (1999). The
MILLENNIUM episode is about asylum inmates who are suspects in a
series of murders involving urban legends.
The "Boyfriend's Death" synopsis in the 2/16 Digest was taken word
for word from the Snopes site about urban legends:

Lucille Fletcher's "The Hitchhiker" is not quite the same as the

Subject: RE: Military recruiting shows from the
1950s/60s
I was rather interested in Julie Jordan's post about this subject.
Between 1963 & 1965 the [removed] Army sponsored a series if 2 minute celebrity
interview shows, called "Great Moments for Young Americans" that were
distibuted to radio stations all over the country. I'm quite familiar with
it as I was the Producer of this series. Hugh Downs was the host. The shows
were produced by the Robert Jennings Production Company. Some of you may
remember that Robert Jennings was the creator of the "Mr. President" series
that aired on ABC in the late 40s & early 50s. We also produced the Boris
Karloff Readers Digest series that was quite popular with radio stations
around the country at that time. The "Great Moments" series also proved to
be quite popular as we had about 1100 stations airing the shows. We would
send out a disk each week with 10 shows on it so that a station could pick
which interviews it wanted. We discovered that most played all of them
throughout the week. The way it worked was I would interview these young
people (young rock stars, sports stars, etc. of that time period) & edit
their answers, write a script with Hugh Downs asking the questions. Then I
would go to Hugh's office (he was doing the Today Show at the time) & sit
with a tape recorder & record him asking the questions. Then back to my tape
decks & edit it together. It really did sound as if he was sitting down with
each person & talking with them. Ah, the magic of tape. They weren't the
long 15 minute shows that Ms. Jordan was refering to, but they were on a lot
of stations & did give a lot of small independent stations a chance to have
national talent heard by their listeners.

Subject: CBS Radio Mystery Theater
I received a couple e-mails from readers regarding the CBS RMT comment.
Over the years I have discovered that memories often fade and details are
not actually accurate, which is why i suggested the plot about "a woman
sending her boyfriend in search of gasoline, the girl is rescued from her
stranded car by police. Though cautioned not to turn around, she does . . .
and sees her boyfriend's lifeless body hanging from a tree branch above the
car" might be CBS RADIO MYSTERY THEATER instead of SUSPENSE has nothing to
do with the time period of the 1960s vs. the 1970s. I know a woman who
swears the NIGHT GALLERY episode from the early 1970s about Agnes
Moorehead's shadow on the wall was a late 1950s HITCHCOCK episode when he's
wrong.
To back up a possibility:
THE CBS RADIO MYSTERY THEATER
Episoe #2826 "The Woman Who Wanted to Live"
Broadcast June 14, 1982.
Lisa has inadvertently walked in on escaped convict Ray Bardon as he robs
and murders a young gas station attendant. In what should be a method of
saving herself, she offers to protect him through police barricades and road
blocks to find fredom. But why is Lisa so intent upon saving this ruthless
murderer? A secret from Lisa's past keeps her and Bardon alive - for now.
This is just one of 2900+ episodes of CBS RMT and I am sure the plot matches
an episode of that show, if not this one.

How long was the longest-running **network** show? Not trying to defend "The

local-origination show over the years, with the NBC feed not being near as
long, wasn't it?
Is it possible McNeil's show once held the record for longest-running

Greetings,
Has the RMS Titanic ever been a part of an OTR plot? (Other than
Starship Titanic, which isn't what I'm looking for). Or perhaps have
survivors been interviewed on radio?
I realize the Titanic sunk during the early days of wireless, and
therefore no contemporary voice broadcasts are possible. There is a
Titanic artifact exhibit currently on display nearby and my daughter
asked if I had any radio shows about the Titanic. I have none.
Any ideas?

Subject: Military recruiting shows from the 1950s/60s
Julie Jordan ask about those 15 minute Country Music shows that promoted the
idea of enlisting in the Army, navy, Air Force, etc.
Julie ask:
Were these all produced under one umbrella, such as the Department
of Defense?
The Departement of Defense did produce shows but not the ones you mentioned. In
fact most every branch of the government produced some sort of radio show at
some time. I have an excellent Civil Defense drama called Tomorrow which was
aired in the early 50s. It explained in dramatic style the value of Civil
Defense and the use of sirens in a community. Something they still do here
where
I live near Ft Knox.
However most of the recruiting shows were produced by the branch of service
mentioned, by the division that pays for modern day TV ads. For the Army it is
the US Army Recruiting Command here at Ft Knox. I believe they also invented
Uncle Sam. Here is the web site [removed]
Someone also told us that the custom was to either destroy them after
broadcast or in some cases mail them back.
Most were pressed on very cheap material and dated, so they were to be used
once
and destroyed. I do have a few in my collection from my days in radio.
I am wondering if the stars got paid for their appearances on these
recruiting shows and if so, was there a standard fee? (eg., union
scale)? Or did they donate their services?
I really don't think the performers were paid, because at the end of the show
it
usually thanks either the union or the artists for donating their time. The
radio stations aired these shows as public service time (meaning free) because
in the old days stations were required to do at least a certainpercentage of
their time as Public Service, not anymore. When block programming faded from
the
airwaves sho did these shows. The Air Force did them longer than most and by
the
70s they were shipping 30 minute shows featuring big city DJs such as Roger
Carroll and Wolfman Jack playing the hit records of the day.
