From Those Were The Days --

1923 - Billy Jones and Ernie Hare, The Happiness Boys, were heard on
radio for the first time. The two were billed as radio's first comedians
and were also credited with creating and performing the first singing
commercial.

8/24

1950 - The summer replacement radio show for Suspense, titled Somebody
Knows, was heard for the final time. The program offered a reward of
$5,000 for information that led to the solving of crimes. Somebody Knows
began with the introduction, "You out there. You, who think you have
committed the perfect crime -- that there are no clues, no witnesses --
listen. Somebody knows."

Hope this isn't too far off topic Charley.

I suggest a way we can get back on topic Glen, before you and I get into
trouble. (Unless it's been done before). How about coming up with
expressions made famous by OTR personalities, that found their way into
conversations, (as rejoinders, put-downs, etc,) and became common usage in
this country back in the glory days.

I'll start off with "T'aint funny McGee"

"Coming Mother"

"Wanna buy a duck"?

"Who was that masked man?"

And then, as kids, we'd do a Superman rip off.

"Look, up in the sky! Is that a Bird? A Plane? [removed](At that time we'd say
"ugh" and wipe our eye).... No, it's a bird. :(

Subject: New "I LOVE A MYSTERY" Item!

Hello, everyone!
WELL! I can finally breathe an enormous sigh of relief - I have been
assisting on a major "I Love A Mystery" project for almost a year, now. Part
of my agreement involved keeping quiet about the project until it was
finished (due to contractual agreements with the Morse estate, among other
things).
My involvement began because of my tremendous fan (remember, that's
short for "fanatical"!) interest in ILAM. I shared my numerous radio
episodes, episode fragments, auditions, fan magazines, interviews, logs,
scripts, etc along with a few others, to help the project along.
And now, the project is finished, and I finally get to tell everyone
about it! The project [removed] "I LOVE A MYSTERY" Companion! Written by
none other [removed] (Suspense/Alfred Hitchcock/CBSRMT/Inner Sanctum)
Grams, Jr!
He has given me permission to quote the preliminary flyer for the book:

THE I LOVE A MYSTERY COMPANION
by Martin Grams, Jr.
with a foreward by Jim Harmon

Longing only for action, adventure and excitement wherever it would lead
them, three men fought through vampire-infested jungles, ghost towns of
wind-swept Nevada, and solved mysteries involving werewolves, defeated mad
scientists hell-bent on world domination, fought gruesome reptiles and
modern-day pirates seeking treasure in every shape and form. Jack, Packard,
Doc Long and Reggie York were those three musketeers and for more than a
decade I LOVE A MYSTERY ruled the radio airwaves.

The complete production history and episode guide will be available under
one cover in late October, officially authorized through the estate of
Carlton E. Morse. The book's contents include:

A complete history of the radio program, including copies of Morse's
correspondence, memories from cast and crew, biographical material about
Carlton E. Morse, and trivia about the various serials dramatized.

A complete episode guide for each and every I LOVE A MYSTERY broadcast
starting from January of 1939 with an episode-by-episode plot description
and cast list!

Documentary about Morse's early mystery and police serials including THE
CROSS-EYED PARROT, DEAD MEN PROWL, DRAGON IN THE SUN, PROWL BY NIGHT, KILLED
IN ACTION, KILLER AT THE WHEEL, THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN POST, THE GAME CALLED
MURDER, CAPTAIN POST: CRIME SPECIALIST, THE WITCH OF ENDOR, BARBARY COAST
NIGHTS, CHINATOWN SQUAD, TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY, THE CITY OF THE DEAD,
and even a complete episode guide for each serial including episode numbers,
titles, air dates, cast lists, plot descriptions and various bits of trivia.

The same treatment is given for I LOVE ADVENTURE and ADVENTURES BY MORSE.

A complete reprint of the January 1939 contract between Carlton E. Morse and
NBC and Standard Brands (the sponsor), and later revision and amendments.
Even a sneak peak at the contract negotiations!

Learn why the program changed formats in both time slots and length of
broadcasts, why sponsors dropped sponsorship, why Michael Raffetto and
Barton Yarborough left the series in 1944, and how it came to be reprised in
1949 for Mutual.

Learn where and how Morse came up with the ideas for his serials, and the
fact that someone else wrote at least ten of the I LOVE A MYSTERY serials
and was quietly paid by Morse for their contribution.

Read the correspondence between Buddy Twiss (the director), Carlton E. Morse
and Peter Lorre's agent when Lorre felt his name and character was being
infringed upon on the program!

Learn about Harry Leopold, the 29-year-old Denver gunman who asked the
warden for a short postponement to Colorado's lethal gas chamber so he could
listen to the concluding chapter of his favorite radio program, I LOVE A
MYSTERY.

Complete documentation of the ILAM novels, comic strips (reprinted in the
book courtesy of the artist), and a complete documentation and production of
the I LOVE A MYSTERY movies with a reprint of a summary proposed but never
made into a full-length motion picture.

Features a reprint of "Treasure Hunt," an unused proposed outline for a
ten-chapter ILAM serial that Morse never got around to writing for the
series.

Reprints of USO material Morse wrote for Barton Yarborough based on the
character of Doc Long.

Complete documentation and episode guides for many of Morse's early serials
including HOUSE OF MYTHS, RCA SPLIT-SECOND TALES, PIGSKIN ROMANCES,
CHINATOWN TALES, THE UPPER ROOM and much, much more.

About 500 pages thick. Will be available in mid-late October, good chance
it'll be at the FOTR Convention.
(For bookstore buyers, it will not be available through bookstores or
[removed] till around Thanksgiving.)
Retail price of the book is $[removed]
Postage is $[removed] for the first book and $[removed] per additional copy.

Pre-publication offer: There is no postage cost involved if the book is
ordered before October 15.
I LOVE A MYSTERY BOOK, Po Box 189, Delta, PA 17314

This is, of course, big, BIG news for all fans of radio mystery and
Carlton Morse (and just plain old all fans of OTR)! I have reviewed the
information in this book, and the amount of material is staggering - there
are shows covered in this book that I have never before heard mentioned as
being Morse shows (some I've never heard mentioned at all!). The network and
sponsor contracts give much insight about the placement and tone of the
show. The interviews cover the actor's thoughts and viewpoints. We know
that there must have been more ILAM shows recorded than exist today, this
book tells how many actually were recorded (and theoretically, might still
EXIST somewhere - Hey, that chapter of "Eight Kinds Of Murder" got found,
cleaned up and released last Christmas - 62 years after it was aired!).
Every great mystery should leave clues for the reader or listener to
find. "I Love A Mystery" left way too many questions, in my opinion. I have
always wanted to know more about the show, more about Morse, but there never
seemed to be enough clues around to get my questions answered
satisfactorily. Now there is. Plenty of answers. Plenty satisfying.
It really was a pleasure making suggestions and helping Martin compile
information and check facts for this legendary series!

Honest to mah grandmaw - the ONLY hard part was keeping quiet about it!

WHEW!
