For several Halloweens, I produced and hosted a 4-hour radio show called
HALLOWEIRD. This program, which had sponsors, was filled with classic radio
shows, album trax and various novelty tunes---all related to Halloween. Here
are a few thoughts:

"THE TELL-TALE HEART" by Edgar Allen [removed] by James Mason
"SORRY, WRONG NUMBER" featuring Agnes Moorehead (either from SUSPENSE or the
shorter LP Version)
ESCAPE: "Blood Bath" w/ Vincent Price
ESCAPE: "Evening Primrose"
"THE SIGNAL MAN" by Charles Dickens---narrated by Nelson Olmsted
"THE BODY SNATCHER" by Robert Louis Stevenson---narrated by Nelson Olmsted
INNER SANCTUM: "Elixir No. 4" w/Richard Widmark
Various selections from "SPIKE JONES IN STEREO"---which takes a comical spin
on horror movies and tv shows.
"AN EVENING WITH BORIS KARLOFF & HIS FRIENDS" (featuring Karloff narration and
audio movie clips)
"DROP DEAD---AN EXERCISE IN HORROR" by Arch [removed] "The Dark"
"THE BLACK CAT" by Edgar Allen [removed] by Nelson Olmsted
"HOUSE OF USHER" by Edgar Allen [removed] by Nelson Olmsted

Guess I should stop, huh? [removed] hope these suggestions help?

Regarding which of the stars on Lux Radio Theater made the most apperances,
I'm surprised no one has quoted "The Bible" (Dunning).
He says - - "Near the end of the run, it was estimated that Lux had gone
through 52,000 pages of script, 496 stars, 1,467 supporting players, 18,667
music cues, and 22,667 sound effects. [snip] Fred MacMurray and Loretta
Young headed the 'most numerous appearances' list of stars, with 26 and 25
roles respectively. Others often heard were Claudette Colbert (24), Barbara
Stanwyck (23), Cary Grant (22), Don Ameche (21), and Brian Aherne, Ray
Milland and George Brent (20 each)."

Subject: Gildy's Blade

On the March 8, 1950 episode of the Great Gildersleeve, a "knife/spatula" was
offered. On the handle was Gildy's (Harold Peary's) signature - the
announcer claimed that Gildersleeve himself invented the knife, which was
offered for $.50 plus two labels (one from any loaf of bread, and one red
end-flap from a Kraft Parkay.) The attendent episode focused around the
creation of the knife, the stainless steel blade of which is described as 1
1/4" wide and 7" long. The handle is rosewood is 4 3/4" long. One side of
the blade is serrated, and the other side is a straight edge. The blade is
spatula shaped.

I wonder if anyone has seen one of these - or is lucky enough to own [removed]

One of my all-time favorites is a SUSPENSE episode titled "GHOST HUNT". It
not just a scary show, but one that involves a broadcaster/dj and an old
house. IMHO, really fits the Halloween theme.

There's plenty of scary stuff for Halloween listening.
Some of my favorite classics are:

SUSPENSE: "House in Cypress Canyon" and the lesser
known "The Signalman"
MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER: "Behind the Locked Door"

The more obscure ones include:

HALL OF FANTASY: "Out of the Sky" and "The Crawling Thing"
QUIET PLEASE: "Tanglefoot" and "Green Light"

All of these are worth a listen. Just turn out the lights and enjoy.

Subject: Rodney Dangerfield on Jack Benny?

I just noticed that comic Rodney Dangerfield died today. That
reminded me that I vaguely recall a Jack Benny Show--pardon
me--Program in which one of the skits features a character by that
name. Or maybe Jack plays the character in a skit. I don't remember
exactly. Anyway, ever since I heard that program--and I can't guess
which episode it was--I've wondered if Rodney Dangerfield took his
name from that skit. At least I assume it's a stage name. I don't
suppose anyone on the list would have any further info on this, hm?

As a follow-up to the message I just sent a few moments ago, I was
perusing the story of Dangerfield's death on the Yahoo site and came
across this quote, regarding the "I don't get no respect" line :

After hearing him perform years later, Jack Benny remarked: "Me, I
get laughs because I'm cheap and 39. Your image goes into the soul of
everyone."

Dangerfield's passing has prompted me to write to this group about how in
the early 1940's and again in the 1950's, Jack Benny would refer to a
western movie star named Rodney [removed] anybody know for sure
if the real life Dangerfield borrowed that name directly from the Benny
show? Was Jack a comedy influence for Rodney? I have never heard anything
about this and it just seems like too much of a coincidence. I have always
been tickled by this every time I have heard one of these shows.

Thanks to anyone who has any clues!

Subject: How the programs worked

Two questions from someone too young to have ever seen an OTR broadcast.
1.) Were all of the actors on the stage (if the program was in front of an
audience) all of the time? When we here Jack Benny or Lux or Burns and Allen
was the cast sitting down waiting for their parts; were guest stars on the
stage the whole time?

2.) How many people used a microphone (for example the RCA 44B). Maybe Hal
Stone or Lois Culver could explain how each actor knew what mike to go to.
Would "weighty actors" like Harold Peary have to use an overhead craned
mike?

Subject: Rodney Dangerfield

The passing of comedian Rodney Dangerfield has reminded me of something I
have always been curious about. In several Jack Benny programs of the late
40's, Jack would try to impress Rochester with the caliber of his Hollywood
connections by dropping the name "Rodney Dangerfield". Now I know from the
obituaries that the comedian's real name was Jacob Cohen, and that he used
the name Jack Roy early in his career, but I have never heard any
explanation of the connection with the Benny show. Apparently, the name was
an inventiion of the Benny writing staff. Anyone have any info?
