NPR had a story recently which reported that Alan Lomax's recording archives
are now online and free. Additionally this database includes many or all of
the radio programs he produced, with dates.

This is the link to the NPR story. The first paragraph includes a link to the
website. I've started listening to "Back Where I Come From" on CBS 1940.
digitalized, but a bit scratchy. I hadn't realized how much Lomax contributed
to OTR.

Folks;

Lawd willin' and the creek don't rise, I (and the rest of my family,
including the teenage redhead) will be attending the final Cincinnati
Old-Time Radio and Nostalgia Convention this [removed] forward to
seeing friends old and new there, and if I remember I'll bring along some
older fundraising discs and donated books (thank you, Ben Ohmart!) to pass
along. (Yes, will be accepting donations, but much more interested in meeting

Don't know how the con will be set up, but if there's a coffee shop in the

Subject: captain midnight

rick:

I don't know the definitive answer to your questions, but this much I can tell
you from a quick review of Illinois newspaper listings of the time:

a) captain midnight was indeed listed on wgn on wednesday march 27, 1940
b) it was listed again, however, two days later at 6pm on wgn on friday march
29, 1940 (see attached pdf)
c) i checked the next seven consecutive days, and captain midnight does not
reappear on wgn at the 6pm timeslot

of course since we're talking about a transcription it's possible that the
recording and broadcast dates are off; but it's also possible that the last
listing on March 29, 1940 is a missing episode that represents the tie-up of
the loose ends you mention.

hope this is of interest.

best,
jon guss

Subject: Zombies on Radio

I've always enjoyed the Shadow episode "Isle of the Living Dead,"
probably because of the zombies. And there were a couple other Shadow
episodes involving zombies, too. I've always enjoyed the B-movies of the
1930s and 1940s featuring zombies. So I began to wonder about other old
radio shows involving zombies.

Today's zombies, unfortunately, are more of a combination of a ghoul -
eating human flesh - and a vampire - infecting its victims with its
bite. I'm looking for the good old zombies of yore, when they were a
product of voodoo, not some pandemic [removed] when they shambled along,
not ran [removed] Yes, I long for a good old zombie story.

Can any of you point me toward old radio shows featuring zombies?
Although I've been an OTR fan for over forty years, I can't think of any
at the moment. With all the great old horror series out there, certainly
there must be some zombies among them. But I'm coming up blank. And
Halloween is only six months away!

Help jog my poor old memory. What radio plays featured zombies?

I've been listening to a few episodes of "The Man Called X" and am reminded
again how often Marshall flubbed his lines. Was he notorious for that, or was
it just that program's policy to let the flubs go on to the air whe reas
other shows redid the episode to correct the flub?

Subject: Skelly and Captain Midnight

Rick Keating, writing of the last programs of the Skelly Oil Captain
Midnight programs, notes,

But the adventure that
aired that date doesn't conclude the "Mysterious Voice" storyline. Captain
Midnight has discovered where Chuck Ramsay and a student pilot named Frank
Crane are being held prisoner, but he hasn't rescued them, yet.
Which means 72 years later, Chuck is _still_ waiting for rescue.

A little history on Skelly and Captain Midnight.
Skelly Oil owned, among other things, Spartan Aircraft. Spartan
eventually stopped manufacturing airplanes, but continued manufacturing:
they shifted to trailers.
One branch of Spartan was the Spartan School of Aeronautics, which, AFAIK
is still in operation. (There were plugs for the School in some episodes
of the show.)
but Skelly apparently tired of the show: it went from weekdaily episodes
to broadcasts of three times a week. Things were winding down on the
show in the Fall of 1940.
However, Captain Midnight had indeed learned of the location of Shark via
a message Chuck had hidden in an innocent-seeming message (every 10th
word was significant). Captain Midnight had been exchanging radio
transmissions with Shark, so Shark could determine that Captain Midnight
was at a distant location, using radio triangulation to determine his
location.
Captain Midnight engaged the services of a man who could sound just like
him. While the decoy Captain Midnight continued to exchange radio
transmissions with Shark, the genuine Captain Midnight followed Chuck's
information to reach Shark's site.
I hope the above helps.
When Ovaltine took over sponsorship, the same scriptwriters were used so
the continuity of the programs was maintained.

Subject: unresolved serials

Rick asks about the abrupt ending of an old Captain Midnight run. I can't
comment on that specifically, not being very familiar with the show. In doing
research on Life on Red Horse Ranch which is finally starting to circulate,
episode 65 ends somewhat with loose threads, though not in such a complete
cliff hanger. I know for a fact those behind Red Horse were hoping to do a
second set of 65 so it makes sense to leave some storylines open which the
new series could pick up. But the second run was never produced, though some
scripts were written, so listeners will never know the answer to the
announcer's final question: "We found a happy gang on Red Horse Ranch today,
didn't we. We wonder if he [ranch owner Sam Carter] feels that everything
will go so smooth when the oil company begins its drilling operation?"

I guess the writer (Gomer Cool) felt comfortable ending that way because
either the audience would demand further episodes or if the audience wasn't
interested then no one would miss the story's hanging resolution anyway.

In any case, considering how quickly some other serials were wrapped up (per
Cox's work on the soaps), it appears the powers-that-be weren't overly
concerned about tidy story conclusions or ending shows on fairly short
notice. Hopefully those involved bck then would be at least a little pleased
that their unfinished stories still tantalize at least a few listeners so
many decades later.
