Subject: Best OTR Sites in Chicago

Hi guys,

I just moved to Chicago for a new job (well Evanston but close enough) and
wanted to know from this group:

What are the "not to miss" sights from OTR's past in
Chicago?

I know about the Museum of Broadcast History and Radio Hall of Fame

Thanks

Tom Barnett

SAME TIME, SAME STATION

In April 1946 The Lux Radio Theater did an adaptation of the movie:
Barnacle Bill. The radio play was supposed to feature Wallace Beery,
Noah Beery, Carol Ann Beery and marjorie Main.

After the rehearsal the Beerys went to Wallace Beery's home in Beverly
Hills to celebrate his birthday which was April 1. During the Early
morning hours, Noah Berry died of a heart attack. First we'll hear Noah
Beery in the rehearsal.

The day of the actual air show, they made a few changes in the cast.
We'll hear the broadcast next.

This Week's Classics & Curios Show:

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 84

"BIRTH OF THE BLUES"

Although "Birth of the Blues" on the Mutual Broadcasting System was
primarily a promotion for Bing Crosby's 1941 Paramount picture of the
same name, the program produced outstanding musical entertainment. The
program, like the film, loosely follows the origins and success of the
blues over some 25 years. The movie starred Bing, Mary Martin, Jack
Teagarden, Ruby Elzy, Brian Donlevy, and Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, and
the radio set features Bing, Johnny Mercer, Rochester, Betty Jane
Rhodes, Ruby, John Scott Trotter's orchestra, and announcer Arthur Gilmore.

Great blues tunes include [removed] Handy's "Saint Louis Blues" from 1914
sung by jazz artist Ruby Elzy and "Memphis Blues" from 1909 performed by
the John Scott Trotter band as part of a New Orleans jubilee to make
listeners "hot, hep, and happy," as Bing describes it. Bing, Johnny, and
Betty Jane join in on Mercer's own composition "The Waiter, the Porter,
and the Upstairs Maid." Bing also brings "Melancholy Baby," and Betty
Jane performs "Cuddle Up a Little Closer."

At one point Bing asks Rochester to provide his own analysis of blues
music, who pretty much describes it as bringing together notes and more
notes, and lots of notes from all directions, with some singing, some
not. Bing provides a jazzy blues sample with "Wait Till the Sun Shines,
Nelly."

Of course, Bing, with help from actress/singer Betty Jane Rhodes, brings
the show to a close with the title song, "Birth of the Blues," the
crowning piece of the broadcast and the movie. The song was composed in
1926 by Ray Henderson, with lyrics by Buddy G. DeSylva and Lew Brown.
Concerning the movie score, with considerable help from the Dixieland
Jass Band and from other hot blues pioneers over the years, the film
received a nomination for the academy award for best scoring of a
musical picture, losing to "Dumbo." Finally, although I do wish the
film's "Saint James Infirmary" had also been included on the radio show,
as entertainment the program and the music receive my nomination for 5
stars.
