Dear Ken:
You asked about an episode of TTR in which the entire theme of the show is
played uninterrupted by the announcers. I own all available episodes in the
series and I am unaware of any such broadcast. I do however know of an
episode that comes close to your description.
It was the show broadcast on February 25, 1951 entitled, "the Trap." Near
the close of the program, Joel mcCrea addressed the question often asked by
audience members of the name of the theme; "The Texas Ranger March." He gave
the name of the music and the name of the composer of the arrangement used
on the program; that of Robert Armbruster (sp), the NBC Orchestra conductor
at that time.
Here's an amusing note. After McCrea gave the info, he pulled a trick you
could only get away with on radio. He acted as if Armbruster was right there
in the studio and asked him to commence with the theme to close the program.
All music used on that series was canned. In fact, Armbruster created an
entire library of recorded music used not only on TTR, but on other NBC
shows such as Dimension X, The Falcon, Barrie Craig, Cloak and Dagger, The
Chase, Screen Director's Playhouse and more. NBC must've sold the library to
CBS a few years later, because you can also hear that music on Yours Truly,
Johnny Dollar.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Radio drama in Canada
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
In response to Mr Ted Kneebone's inquiry about the current state of radio
drama in Canada, I would like to say that radio drama in Canada is almost
non-existent at the present time.
The only dramatic series on CBC radio at the present time is a weekly
30-minute program called "Afghanada". It tells the continuing story of four
Canadian soldiers who ship out to Afghanistan. They are immediately sent deep
into the heart of the conflict: Kandahar Province, where the Taliban
insurgency is fiercest. Every day, these Canadian soldiers on the ground
confront the chaos and violence of life "outside the wire". It is a reflection
of the very real situation Canadian soldiers are facing every day in
Afghanistan. The award winning series has garnered critical and public praise
and is proving hugely popular with listeners. It is available every Thursday
at 11:30 AM and again at 11:00 PM Eastern time on CBC Radio One, online at
[removed] and on Sirius satellite radio's CBC channel.
For many years, the CBC produced high quality radio drama. CBC Stage in the
1940's and 1950's and CBC Wednesday Night in the 1950's and 1960's are two
examples.
In recent years, CBC management has decided to reduce and almost eliminate
radio drama production because of budgetary constraints and the lack of
listener interest.
It is a sad state of affairs that Canada's public broadcaster fails to
recognize the value of audio drama as the BBC continues to do.

Assuming this posting will appear in the Tuesday issue of the OTR Digest, I
wanted to bring to everyone's attention of a goody that expires on midnight,
October 12. The Warner Archive has a special 30 percent off sale for their
DVDs-on-demand products. That is, the studio is burning copies on blank
DVD-Rs for customers and a sales doesn't come along often. Leah Biel and my
wife and I were at the recent New York Comic Con and got a postcard for 30
percent off any Warner titles at [removed] Use the code NYCC30 at
checkout. Or call 866-373-4389. This means titles like SUSPENSE (1946), early
Vitaphone film shorts with radio actors, and other old-time radio related
movies can be bought at a discount.

1932 Two of radio's earliest efforts at soap operas were heard for the
first time. Judy and Jane, sponsored by Folger's Coffee, and Betty and
Bob, sponsored by General Mills, had listeners glued to their radios
into the early 1940s.
1933 Dreft, the first synthetic detergent, went on sale. Ten years
later, Dreft was the sponsor of The Dreft Star Playhouse.
1937 The Mutual Broadcasting System debuted Thirty Minutes in
Hollywood. 48 sponsors shared the cost of the program that aired in 72
cities nationwide. It was the first Mutual co op radio show. George
Jessel and Norma Talmadge starred. Music was provided by the Tommy

1936 Professor Quiz aired for the first time. It was the first
national quiz show on radio and lasted until 1948. Guests asked
Professor Quiz (Dr. Craig Earl) questions. If they were able to stump
the prof, they collected a $25 prize ($382 in 2009 dollars). Professor
Quiz announcers were Robert Trout and Arthur Godfrey. Sponsors included
Kelvinator refrigerators, Teel Shampoo and Velvet pipe tobacco.
1948 One of radio's last premiering soap operas, The Brighter Day,
happened this day in Three Rivers. The show centered around the Dennis,
and their extended family. It's interesting to take a look at the cast
and see which names are still recognizable, like Hal Holbrook and
William Redfield. Some of the sponsors are still around, too: Ivory Soap
flakes, Blue Cheer detergent and Hazel Bishop lipstick. The soap opera
lasted for six years on radio.

1937 The longest running detective show debuted. Mr. Keen, Tracer of
Lost Persons lasted until 1955. Three different actors played the title
role, Bennett Kilpack was Mr. Keen the longest, and Arthur Hughes saw
the final show. Phil Clark also played the part. There were many more
than three sponsors Anacin, Kolynos (a toothpaste), BiSoDol antacid
mints, Hill's cold tablets, Heet liniment, Dentyne, Aerowax, RCA Victor
and Chesterfield cigarettes. Some are long gone, some are still around,
some don't advertise on radio anymore, and some are not allowed to.

1939 Radio listeners welcomed The Right to Happiness on the NBC Blue
network. The 15 minute drama turned out to be one of the longest running
shows of its kind. It moved over to CBS in 1941, then back to NBC in
1942. Fourteen years later Right to Happiness returned to CBS where it
stayed until its last days in 1960. The show had a theme song, Song of
the Soul, and what seemed like a cast of thousands. It just took a lot
of different actors to play the continuing roles over a 21 year period.
1945 Barry Fitzgerald starred as Judge Barnard Fitz in His Honor, the
Barber, which debuted on NBC.
