Subject: Jello museum
Last week The Wall Street Journal mentioned that there is a Jello museum in
upstate NY. The web site
[removed]
mentions Jello's relationship with Jack Benny with only one sentence,
although there are ample pictures and text of Bill Cosby, and other history.
The relationship of Jello to the Benny program was an important and
interesting one, as documented in the Museum of Broadcasting's "Jack Benny:
The Radio and Television Work." Has anyone visited this museum, and does it
cover Jello's relationship with Jack Benny in any detail?

Hi from an occasional lurker.
I went to an antique car show this past weekend and someone displayed a
completely restored 1915 (?) Maxwell. Not a single mention of Jack Benny,
though :(
Makes me wonder how many Maxwells are still around in the hands of various
collectors and museums.

_Adaptations: From Short Story to Big Screen 35 great stories that have

includes "Red Ryder Nails the Hammond Kid" by Jean Shepherd. The movie "A
Christmas Story," directed by Bob Clark (l983), was based on it. (Well, I
didn't know.) Harrison includes a brief outline of some of Shepherd's
outrageous radio antics on NY's WOR.
A footnote states: "Shepherd became bitter and reclusive after he was dropped
from WOR. He was belligerent in public appearances and ultimately even
disowned his children; when he died in l999, his will stated that he had no
issue."

I saw the name of Jeff Corey in the Births/Deaths column, and I wondered if
some of the Digesters knew that in the early days of "Space Patrol" on
ABC-Radio (and maybe on TV, for all I know), he played the part of
"Lieutenant" Jeff Corey of the Space Patrol, brother to Commander Corey and
flight instructor to Cadet Happy, before Happy was assigned to Commander
Corey? Oh, well, so much for trivia.

Derek Tague was very kind to mention my name in the last Digest, and it
reminded me to ask some of you experts out there (in the ether) who know
these things what was the name of the horse that wins the race in Spike
Jones' version of the William Tell Overture. Is it "Beetle Bomb", "Feedle
Bomb", "Feetle Bomb", or, less likely, "Fetal Bomb"?

Subject: Cabin in the Sky
I just finished watching the movie with Ethel Waters and Eddie
Anderson on TCM and a couple observations and a question occurred to
me.
First, Eddie Anderson could sing quite a bit better than he ever let
on on the Jack Benny show, for obvious reasons. He was no Sinatra,
but he could do a pretty good job without the screeching that always
got laughs on Benny.
Second, of all the regular cast members, Anderson was the only one
who did not play a version of himself, and as a result, couldn't
really get plugs for his movie roles on the show like the others did.
I've heard various bits, skits, or jokes about Jack, Mary, Phil,
Dennis, Kenny and even Don being in some movie or other, but never a
peep about "Rochester." Of course they couldn't because he wasn't
Eddie Anderson on the show, so how could they possibly work it in?
Now I haven't heard ALL the shows, so I could be mistaken. Is there
some reference on the show to his appearance in Cabin in the Sky? And
if so, how do they do it?
And finally, a question. John "Bubbles" Sublett does a song, "That's
Why They Call Me Shine," and I wonder if that is the derivation of
the old derogatory term for a black man, shine. Does anyone know?

Matthew mentioned:

Subject: Doc Adams real name
Hello, I would also submit that Doc's real name was Calvin Moore, due to
an
episode where he'd left some town after needing to kill someone. I have
this
as 31 January, 1953, titled Cavalcade, though I suspect that's the wrong
title, since it didn't have much to do with riding horses.
The episode title, "Cavalcade," is correct. This episode was produced a
second time on GUNSMOKE, on 11/08/1959.
"Cavalcade" is the title on the front page of the script which resides in a
collection in a private archive.
See the following URL for a summary of differences between the two
productions of "Cavalcade":
[removed];i=214&t=214
Like many words, "Cavalcade" has multiple meanings.
Cavalcade:
A procession of vehicles, riders, or people on foot.
or
Feudal duty to accompany the lord on a minor expedition or as an escort.
or
Any procession or parade.
In that episode, radio's Doc Adams, Howard McNear, says in a very weary
voice,
"I ran: St. Louie, Virginia City, Montana Territory, the Panhandle,
Wichita, Abilene, and Dodge. I changed my name to Charles Adams. . . ."
I can visualize Doc, aka Calvin Moore, riding alone through that
seemingly endless procession of places on his quest to find a place where he
will not feel hunted for a crime that was really an act of self-defense.
Is it any accident that the name of the Lawman who is trying to find Doc
is "Hunter?"
Signing off for now,
Stewart

I've bought a few of the TV show "compilations" DVDs that Jack French

I assume that the DVDs are available [removed] this chain's stores.

A Shell Chateau program from the summer of 1935 Al Jolson's comedy
quests were two guys, whose name I can't recall, who had a seminal
"who's on first?" skit in their routine. It was about the first quarter
or one third of the A&C routine. It was only a few lines.
This would have been a few years before A&C started doing it.
I understand material from vaudeville would be picked up by others,
slightly reworked and used by other performers.

This article has some great OTR history in it as it covers the passing of another piece of that era - the last broadcast radio station is leaving Hollywood.
It mentions Jack Benny, Art Linkletter, Burns and Allen, Edgar Bergen, Orson Welles, Jackie Gleason, Steve Allen, Eddie Cantor, Rosemary Clooney, Ed Wynn and Gene Autry.
According to the article, "KNX reporter Michael Linder has produced a 55-minute retrospective of Columbia Square's radio history scheduled to run Friday at 10:05 [removed] It will be the last time that old-fashioned reel-to-reel recorders and cart tape machines are used: The new studios are all digital."
