Subject: This Week's Schedule

Friends:

With thanks for your patience, I want to announce some streaming OTR
for this week on Live365.

Every Thursday, I'll update the playlist with 12 hours + of new
programming. This week's list includes lots of Orson Welles, early
episodes of Benny, Suspense, Fibber McGee; westerns like Gunsmoke and
Six Shooter; Dimension X and X-Minus 1. All in all a mixed,
interesting roster.

In addition, I program genre blocks (mystery, comedy, sci-fi) late at
night, six days a week. Goodness knows I'm not up to listen to them,
but they are programmed at that hour to attract younger listeners who,
it seems, never have to sleep!

[removed]

Finally, since I promised the very patient list moderator that
eventually these announcements would stop, if any of you care enough to
want to be kept up to date with a weekly, specific playlist, email me
off list and I'll add your name to a contact list for just such a
purpose.

Kind Regards

Thom Bray

Ah, the wonder of all our influences and long may they live with the
ensuing generation who never tire of asking me, "So, where are all your EC
comics now?"

I auctioned off all 3,000 of my Silver Age comics and used
them as a down payment on our new house. I kept my 1932 Lone Ranger. I
miss them, too.

Jim French Productions is about to release the first CD containing three
stories from our new Raffles, The Gentleman Thief series and I would like to
include a bit of OTR history in the release regarding earlier American
versions of the character. So if anyone can help me you can e-mail me off

Subject: Peril

I just listened to an episode of a show called "Peril," titled "The
Curse of Ramses." I suspect it's Australian in origin--possibly South
African or BBC. I can't find anything about it online. Anybody know
anything about this series?

This was part of my annual Halloween listen-a-thon. Halloween has
always been the most OTRish of holidays for me--perhaps because it was
at Halloween that I was first introduced to OTR, a little over 20 years
ago. I know the day will come when I'll listened to every Christmas,
New Year's or Thanksgiving Day show in my collection--but I don't think
I'll ever run out of shows that are appropriate for Halloween!

This year's FOTR convention was a blast and it was great to see
everybody again! I am already looking forward to the 30th anniversary
gathering. :-))))

I want to publicly thank Derek Tague for his kind words about my
"contributions" to the Comedy Panel -- although I did participate by
doing the Phil Donahue schtick with the mic (not to mention the crucial
act of turning lights off and on as needed! LOL), most of what I
contributed was during the planning stages when Derek would bounce ideas
off of me and ask my opinion. Derek was truly the driving force behind
the panel itself. Kudos to our host!

Have a happy Welles Day!

MISTAKES FROM THE ETHER:

In issue #348, I had referred to:

Gary and LaDonna Kramer from Great American Audio;

Gary Ktamer runs Great American RADIO, not ---Audio: GAA was the company that
put out some of the Smithsonian sets as well as Anthony Tollin's "The Shadow:
The Lost Episodes" and "Too Hot for Radio."

I then referred to:

signing the humongous get-well cardfor Peg Lynch (courtesy of FOTR camerman
Harold Zeigler; it was announced
that Peg and her husband Od had both suffered strokes recently)

Actually, according to Jack French, who wrote me off-list, only Od had
suffered a stroke. Miss Lynch, however, was experiencing recurrent back pain.
Therefore, Harold's get-well card for her was appropriate.

MAD MAGAZINE:

With all this talk about Mad Magazine, it's worth noting that the early
issues, pre-Alfred E. Neuman, were titled "Tales Well Calculated to Drive
[removed]," which, of course, was a spin on the famous opening narration for
radio's "Suspense." Even though those introductory words were displayed as
part of the title on the cover, I wouldn't be able to tell you if they ever
were "officially" part of the title.

ANNOYING AUDIENCE MEMBERS:

Forgive my digression into the realm of the cathode-ray medium.

Mr. Kinsler comments about an earlier posting which mentions:

the obnoxious laugh of an audience member.

There is a Classic 39 episode of "The Honeymooners" titled "Young at Heart"
whose studio audeience must've been filled with teenyboppers. This young
sounding audience goes wild when then-teenage heartthrob Ronnie Burns (adopted
son of George & Gracie) shows up as the character "Atomic Passion." That's not
so bad, but in a later scene when Jackie Gleason/Ralph Kramden is trying to
balance a tray of coffee cupswhile wearing roller skates, we the audience
actually hear a girl in the audience admonishing Gleason with "Steady now.
Don't drop it!" Of course, the script called for Gleason to ignore that girl's
advice. If the video wizards on this list, such as Fred Berney, can devise a
way to eliminate this obnoxious little girl from the soundtrack, please let me
know.

WOTW AFTERMATH:

I enjoyed subscriber John Olsen's "Two-Minute Mystery" involving the Shadow &
the WOTW Martian "invasion" at
..
   [removed]~deshadow/tmsm/ .

However, I'd like to know if other OTR programmes made reference to, commented
upon, or, perhaps, hazarded a parody of WOTW in the days and weeks that
followed. I refuse to believe that Fred Allen remained silent about this one.
Did Lum 'n' Abner and/or Amos 'n' Andy weigh in on WOTW?

Ether!

Subject: Mary Livingston(e)

I noticed that the final "E" from Mary Livinstone's name
was dropped in the credits for "The Mouse That Jack Built"
as it was on the comic book cover for "Jack Benny Comics"
recently linked here. This is a common mistake, I presume,
since the name is pronounced "-stun" and not "-stone" as
it's spelled.

This assumption is a common mistake, often made by people who have not
purchased a copy of "39 Forever, Second Edition" where it is discussed at
length. :) At different times, the name was spelled different ways. I have
autographs where Mary herself spelled it both with and without the "e"...at
different times, of course.

Although there was an announcement made at FOTR convention in Newark

Subject: '29 crash radio take!

Hi,

Little late but still on topic. Since Friday is the 75th anniversary of
the 29 crash, does anybody know if there are any radio news or references
to the Stock Market Crash as it happened. I am not referring to
campaigne speeches one-liners or comedy skits, but actual reporting of
that day's event that has survived as reported on the radio at the time.
I have always wondered what the average American heard when they got up
or home from work, if they had a job or just how did the most wide
reaching ecconomic event of the time effect the regular working person.
This is the event that was to color the world of radio throughout much of
its run as the foremost media in the home. Was it announced and then
runs on banks or what? Thanks for the info in advance.
