A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Re: Beyond Tomorrow

I don't know about this episode, but I do know that the series did
air, and on the episodes I have, John Campbell is the host.

Joe, are you thinking of Exploring Tomorrow? That was the series in
which John Campbell Jr. is heard hosting the series. Even on that, he
was also a technical consultant as he provided stories to the writers
for adaptation, but he also, in the case of ET spoke as "host."

On Beyond Tomorrow, which was on CBS, and has never been determined it
definitely aired, though it was possible, Campbell is not heard. There
are only three actual scripts that appear to have been produced for
Beyond Tomorrow:

The Outer Limit with Frank Lovejoy which was described as part of a
series for CBS called "Beyond This World" but was probably part of a
potential series called "Beyond Tomorrow" produced and directed by
Mitchell Grayson (see NY Times 3/16/1950)
Requiem with Everett Sloane was supposed to be the premier, but I
haven't found confirmation that it aired on or about 4/5/50.
Incident At Switchpath with Brett Morrison was supposed to follow, but
again, no confirmation.
The Outer Limit was supposed to repeat as the fourth episode.

Yet in the NY Times on 5/14/50, it mentions that "Beyond Tomorrow" was
under consideration as a replacement for "The FBI in Peace and War."
The way it is phrased, it sounds as if it never aired: "Also under
consideration is a Science Fiction series, "Beyond Tomorrow," as a
[removed]" Not "the" Science Fiction series which to me might have
implied it did air, but instead "a" Science Fiction series (as if
announcing a potential series) possibly knowing there were three
transcriptions already in the can so to speak.

Subject: Re: GM refrigerators

The last digest posted the question, "Remember when General Motors made
refrigerators?"

This might be a technicality, but General Motors never made
refrigerators. William Durant, head of GM bought the company called the
Guardian Refrigerator Company in 1916 which was based in Ft. Wayne, IN
renaming it Frigidaire. With his help, GM then bought the company from
Durant (kind of an odd business dealing) in 1919 and moved the
headquarters to Detroit, but it wasn't making any money. So in 1921,
they moved it to Dayton, Ohio (near where I reside) and put it under the
control of Delco founder and now head of that GM division, Charles
Kettering. Under engineer Kettering's control, the process was fine
tuned began to turn a profit. The original production building is still
here, though it was converted to building SUVs for GM in the late
seventies and now is closed due to huge layoffs by GM in this area.

So technically, GM owned a business that made refrigerators, but never
actually made any themselves under the GM label.

Had to clear that up.

Subject: What's New?

Paul Fornatar asks, "Are we at the end of the line in discovery of old time
radio programs?"

I'd have to say, ABSOLUTELY NOT! There are many collectors of transcription
discs who are putting new programs into circulation all the time. One of my
favorite aspects of the hobby is finding instantaneous lacquer recordings of
little-known shows and transferring them for posterity.

There are also plenty of off-air recordings still out there to be
discovered. Home disc recorders were available as early as the early '30s,
and new things occasionally turn up. Of course tape recorders were around
in the '50s, so there's got to be plenty of late-era OTR recorded in that
way.

That being said, lacquer discs are a ticking time bomb. Eventually the
lacquer coating will deteriorate, and will fall off the glass or aluminum
core. Those discs in private collections should be transferred ASAP. As
bad as that sounds, I am the proud owner of many lacquer discs from the mid
to late '30s that still play wonderfully. Of course, I've transferred them
safely to a modern format.

I've got a friend who's not really an OTR collector, but has some Armed
Forces Radio 16" discs from his time in the Navy in the '50s. As a birthday
present, I recently had them transferred to CD for him. They were CBS
network Bob and Ray shows, some of which were not previously in circulation.

This same friend has some reel to reel tapes he made off the air in the
'50s. Those were the Catholic Hour and a broadcast of the Metropolitan
Opera.

I think it's fair to say that there's more OTR in circulation now than will
ever be discovered in the future, but don't give up the search! There are
lots of treasures yet to be [removed]

While I still wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that warehouse full of
"Amos 'n' Andy" network broadcasts from 1929 to '42 to turn up, other stuff
thought to be lost forever turns up from time to time. Here's a link to a
blog devoted to discs that turn up now, often of uncirculated shows:

So far the biggest catch I saw was a long lost "Suspense" episode with
Orson Welles, "The Lost Special," as well as another "Suspense" episode with
Jimmy Stewart that was long missing its ending, but he found a complete copy
of the play.

I think most radio stations have cleaned out their attics but you'd be
surprised at what turns up in estate sales. Randy found that lost Orson
Welles "Suspense" on Ebay of all places, if I'm not mistaken.

I also found it's not unusual for something that long existed in terrible
audio, to suddenly turn up in much better shape. Even though it was found
awhile back, the complete "Ford Theatre" adaptation of the Jack Benny movie
"The Horn Blows at Midnight" comes to mind.
