Subject: Vic Perrin

Someone had recently inquired about Vic's possibly being related to Sam
Perrin. I had never heard that. I recently had a conversation with Vic's
widow, Rita Perrin, who still attends the luncheons of the Pacific Pioneer
Broadcasters, in the Southern California area. Through the advantages of no
longer existent SPERDVAC conventions, I have known Rita even when Vic was
alive.

In the Los Angeles area many years ago, Vic had a brother who was a
reporter/newsman on the CBS Radio affiliate, KNX. He was Lloyd Perrin, and
he pre-deceased Vic by many years. As for Vic, he was considered one of the
most distinguished and talented of radio actors. Only the finest on the
west coast worked for producer-director Norman Macdonnell (Gunsmoke).

Some years ago when I interviewed Norman Corwin, I took a few photos of him
in his apartment in LA. Unfortunately, they were some of the least
satisfactory ones I have taken. Is there anyone on the list who took a good
photo of him (in an artistic sense, clear, good composition, good lighting
etc.) when he attended a SPERDVAC convention? Do you still have a negative?

I may want to buy a copy.

Dear Charlie, it would mean a lot to me (and others) if you could post this
sad message even though it is connect more with modern rather than OTR.

There is a lovely tribute to Linda Smith on:

I know that as a radio personality she was involved in modern BBC radio
rather than OTR. However, as a radio personality she is/was one of the
greats and she will be sorely missed on such shows as 'The News Quiz" and
"Just a Minute".

I hope that you can get chance to read the tribute and in particular listen
to the tribute from Jeremy Hardy. She was a great talent and she will be
sorely missed.

I can't tell you where to find audio copies and I suspect none exist
now. But I can tell you and Harold a little more about that series. In
1981, I was the Unit Chief of the FBI's Research Unit and I had one of
my historians, Lynn Vines, go through our FBI files concerning all the
network and local radio shows involving the Bureau. Her results were
published in the November 1981 issue FBI employee's magazine, "The
Investigator." Here's what Lynn said about this particular series:

"While there were a number of lesser-known radio programs about the FBI
which were produced on local radio, two had large audiences in their
respective areas. The first show, 'The FBI in Action,' debuted on
February 20, 1943 over WGY, the General Electric station in
Schenectady, New York. The show was produced and directed by Earle
Pudney.

"WGY's writers based their scripts upon actual case histories from the
files of the FBI, and weekly listeners heard about the diligent and
effective crime-combatting efforts of FBI Agents--efforts which always
resulted in the apprehension and punishment of criminals.

"Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Office, Arthur Cornelius, Jr.,
was the show's narrator and also assisted in the preparation of the
scripts. The show, which was entirely non-commercial, emphasized the
'crime does not pay' theme. The program, one of the most popular
produced by WGY, ran until 1956."
