Hope this helps.

There has been a lot of discussion about whether the Lone Ranger was a
deserter from the Texas Ranger. In the first place, it is always dangerous
to apply realistic real-world expectations to a fictional character. How
many laws did The Shadow break in his long career in pulps, radio and
movies? Countless illegal entries, kidnapping, illegal detentions, and some
killings that might be charged as murder.

Batman followed suit. Even Superman is not blameless. In one radio and
later TV story, he flew a man and woman who have discovered his secret
identity to the top of a mountain, and brought in a complete house with
supplies for them. However, knowing Clark Kent is Superman is not a crime,
and kidnapping is. Moreover, when the two try to escape they fall to their
deaths. Superman has placed them in a position where they die. He is
responsible. He could be charged with murder.

Back to the Lone Ranger and the Texas Rangers. In those days,
the Rangers were a military-style organization, not just a police force.
Young Ranger Reid (who may or may not have had the first name of John) may
have enlisted. On the other hand he may have volunteered to help his
brother, Captain Dan Reid, capture the Cavendish gang for a "dollar a day".
In fact, that was what happened in the Klinton Spillsbury movie version.
Dan just gave his brother a badge, implying a deputizing. It was not
unusual for volunteers to join the Rangers for shorter periods. By faking
his death and not showing up at Ranger headquarters, perhaps the only thing
he failed to do was to collect his eight bucks for temporary duty.

If Reid did in fact enlist for a definite period such as one or
two years, I am not sure how serious an offense failure to report for duty
was. Historically, Rangers seem to drift in and out of service, working on
cattle drives, trying other law enforcement jobs like town marshal or
railroad detective.

The bottom line, of course, is that failure to return to
headquarters is only the first of many rules and regulations the Lone Ranger
ignored in his personal idea and ideal of justice. Right-wingers love to
take such figures as the Lone Ranger and John Wayne to their hearts, but as
represented in their dramas both figures acted on the most liberal of
motives, accepting that unjust laws may be ignored.

Who can deny that the Lone Ranger served a higher purpose by his career as a
private avenger. For instance, he worked as a direct representative of
President Lincoln to assure the success of the Union Pacific railroad. In
one story, Lincoln went as far as to say the survival of the United States
as a nation could be owed to one man - the Lone Ranger! Better than
rounding up cattle thieves as a Texas Ranger.

By the way, there may be some that don't know the Texas Rangers
still exist, currently about 110 members. They are considered one of the
finest law enforcement bodies in the world, the equal of Scotland Yard or
the Canadian Mounties.

It appears acoording to Jerry's log, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar was not aired
on October 23, 1956, but there is no missing episode.
Does any of the Johnny Dollar experts on the digest know what aired instead?
Thanks!
