Thom,
In regards to your question, does anyone listen to OTR content on Live 365?
I definately, do! My favourite OTR is comedies (Our Miss Brooks, Fibber
McGee & Molly, Gildersleave, My Friend Irma, Life with Luigi, Ozzie &
Harriet, Father Knows Best, The Bickersons, The Aldrich Family, and Baby
Snooks) to name a few. When XM Satellite Radio OTR 164 plays blocks
sometimes up to 6-10 hrs straight of horror, detective, sci-fi, or westerns,
I'll go to Live 365 and listen up to 5 different OTR feeds, through Real
Audio. I'm bound to find one station playing comedy. As a payed member, I
could listen to a choice of 10 OTR streams. I'm locked out of Telegrams
Canada, which plays great female big band singers and lots of Amos & Andy!
My other favourite ways of listening to OTR is through internet Real Audio,
Yesterday USA, Sat. afternoons with Chuck Schaden's "Those Were the Days and
Sunday nights "the Golden Age of Radio" with Max Schmid and "The Big
Broadcast" from Washington DC.
I hope this is one answer, to where do some of us get their OTR listening
from. I have no collection and this is the only way I can enjoy OTR.

Does anybody here use Live365 to listen/broadcast
OTR content?

Thom Bray

I listen to live365 while working around the house
(mainly in the garage). I use an FM transmitter on my
laptop and tune in either a portable or walkman type
radio. I could just transmit a playlist of my MP3's
but listening to Live365 exposes me to other types of
OTR not in my collection.

That's a good one, Hal. I actually figured it out. My one objection to

decipher one of them.

Since I'm going to be casting and directing this epic, I'm really nervous

Not to worry Jazzman. I might even play that part myself. Is it [removed] if
Eddie sounds like "Jughead"? :)

Rest assured, Jazzy, it's a stellar cast. The performance will undoubtedly

Folks;

Received information from Jay Hickerson this evening that Barry Hill,
long-time OTR dealer who specialized in bringing British radio drama to the
United States, long-time president of ORCA, subscriber and occasional
contributor to the Internet OTR Digest, and an omnipresent dealer at various
OTR conventions (FOTR, Cincinnati, others) passed away today at the age of
55; the cause was a heart attack.

<<<Tim Lones posted about WTAM 1100AM in Cleveland, the former WWWE>>

Yes, Three-Double-You-EEE (now WTAM radio1100) is a real 50Kw blowtorch with
a 38 state signal and "half of Canada" especially nighttime, broadcasting
across the Lake. They regularly blanket Detroit, Toledo,
Cleveland-Columbus-Akron-Youngstown, Pittsburgh, Wheeling and way beyond.

Here is a link to see the projected WTAM signal coverage, day and night:

[removed];service=AM&status=L&hours=U

There are a few other heritage "clear channel" stations (not the company
name) with AM signals that do the same thing with 50,000 watts of power.
Jack Eigan doing radio interviews from the Chez Paree in Chicago used to
tell his WMAQ listeners he "reached 38 states and Canada," and got phone
calls from them, too. As did Norm Nathan, late-nights on WBZ-Boston. A few
more strong signals on the AM dial today include: WWL-New Orleans, WOR and
WABC-NYC, KSL-Salt Lake City, WBBM and WLS-Chicago, WWVA-Wheeling, WVA.

XERF-Del Rio Texas (an AM transmitter across the Mexican border) used to
have 250Kw of power to blanket most of North America and (I'm told, as well,
a quarter of the world's listening area when the sun goes down at night.)
Remember Wolfman Jack's R&B program in the 1960's? or, those famous
late-night ads for dashboard icons and mail-order, live chickens, and, of
course, "Dr." Brinkley's bogus, goat gonad medicine on XERF in the 1920's
and 30's? The power of radio when you have 250,000 watts burning the dial!

WLW-Cincinnatti in 1934 had an experimental 500Kw transmitter they fired up
until 1939. It was called "The Nation's Station" because it reach a
national audience and reportedly sent special programs to Germany during the
war effort with this super radio signal. Now the maximum AM radio power is
50Kw, (including WLW) to eliminate legal interference with other
broadcasters. However, Voice Of America, religious and other international
broadcasters still have high powered transmitters for worldwide audiences
but not on the AM dial.

Barry Mishkind's website has excellent and complete AM-radio, historical
data: [removed] - highly recommended,
worth a read to remember what good, old radio used to be like. ( Thanks,
Barry. )

To paraphase THE MARCH OF TIME . . . As it must come to all men, death
struck today for one of our more charming and intellectual Old Time Radio
dealers. I received news from Jay Hickerson that Barry Hill passed away
Wednesday at the age of 55 of a heart attack. For those who remember a face
but not the name, Barry was the British fellow who sold old-time radio
cassettes and CDs, and majored in BBC recordings, usually tagging along with
Ivan of Shadow's Sanctum.

Barry was instrumental in bringing BBC radio shows to the [removed] through
impressive connections he established decades ago. Barry was also in charge
of ORCA (Old-Time Radio Show Collector's Association) and was responsible
for the clubs' newsletter here in the states. He attended OTR conventions
frequently including the Cincinnati, Seattle REPS and FOTR Conventions.
Barry generously gave cassettes to anyone who represented an OTR club asking
for donations to the club's library.

On a personal note: Barry and I were close friends and chatted on the phone
regularly. We attended nostalgic conventions together (though he never
forgave me for convincing him to set up as a dealer at the MONSTER BASH
which as it turned out he disliked)> We traded ideas regarding projects
both he and I worked on and shared suggestions. We respected each other's
advice. I remember the day he handed me a mini-newsletter of his one day
featuring photos of his impressive OTR collection, his house and farm where
he lived, and a photo of what he referred to as the annual ORCA member
gathering (which consisted of a photo of his pet turkeys). You have to
catch his sense of humor to appreciate that.

Every year at Newark Barry would bring some alchoholic substance direct from
England (and not the kind you'd buy in the stores over here in the states)
and I in turn would bring something of equal value and spend a couple hours
each evening drinking and swapping dirty jokes. Seven months ago I had a
bottle of alchohol shipped over from Germany said to be one of the country's
finest and it has been sitting on the top of my refrigerator for the last
seven months for the sole purpose of FOTR next weekend.

A week or two ago I received via e-mail from Jay Hickerson a list of the
dealers attending FOTR and I noticed immediately that Barry's name was not
on the list. I phoned Barry immediately and he told me that it was
inaccurate, and he informed me that he was indeed attending the convention -
he sent his money for dealer tables later than usual. I took a breath of
deep relief knowing that my visit this year to FOTR would be complete.
After all, it's friends like Barry that I look forward to spending time
with, making the trip worth the long drive. Even my father chatted with
Barry often, they too were good friends, and he happened to ask the other
day if Barry was attending and I told him yes, that Barry confirmed it over
the phone.

I will have information on where to send flowers and condolences Thursday
afternoon for anyone interested.

Now I have to call my father and give him the sad news. Looks like I'll be
drinking that German beverage with Barry in mind but not as I intended.

it, here's their write-up:

Good Housekeeping's Site of the Day
Radio Days, Old Time Radio
[removed]
If you are a vintage radio buff, Old Time Radio is the place for you. James
F. Widner developed this site that has audio clips and information on
programs popular in the 1930's and 1940's. Old Time Radio is easily navigable
by type broadcast: Radio News, the commentators (who can forget Edward R.
Murrow) and the events, Mystery series ('Who knows what evil lurks in the
hearts of men, the Shadow knows!) with such beloved actors as Orson Welles,
Basil Rathbone to name a couple, Private Eyes, Comedy, Science Fiction,
Captain Midnight, Terry and the Pirates and Special Logs for some of Mr.
Widner's sources. If these sections are not detailed enough, there are
special Radio Recall Articles for insider information on some of the beloved
characters and happenings in the field of radio broadcast. Invite the whole
family to crowd around the speakers and listen to your favorite program just
as families did in that bygone era of radio! (Warning: Be sure to inform your
listeners that War of the Worlds is just fiction, not a happening; we
certainly don't want a repeat of the mass hysteria caused by the original
airing!)
