Subject: The night the earth stood still
I continue to be amazed at how prolific the posts become regarding WOTW
every October. Has there ever been another single broadcast to generate
this kind of response? It seems we are reading stuff we read in the digest
in the 1990s, only in far greater volume now. That's quaint, since more and
more of us have passed from the scene in the last 20 years.
I'll add to the discussion anyway, having refrained until now during these
WOTW posts. I do believe the funniest thing I ever read in print was Steve
Allen's account of what happened to him, his mother and aunt on that fateful
night (10/30/38). I encountered it in "Bigger Than a Breadbox" in 1967
(Doubleday, released that year). But I'm told he repeated it in several
subsequent texts. If you haven't read it in a while and need a huge
chuckle, it will surely bring you a belly-laugh.
