In reference to the short Roswell report linked by another otr poster in a
recent [removed]

I have three MP3 files in my collection that are genuine Roswell/UFO
related radio programs. I got them on the web somewhere, but can't recall
the site exactly.

The first is a July 8, 1947 recording of ABC's "Headline Edition" with
Taylor Grant. This is the first 3:38 of the show and includes the
headline about the Roswell crash, a promo/intro annoucement for "Headline
Edition" and mentions of other stories and then the full report on the
crash. It mentions "flimsy construction" so this may be the recording
another otr list member mentioned hearing.

The next is "Search for the Flying Saucers" an ABC radio news special
hosted by Walter Kearnan (sp?). This one runs 14:02 and includes
interviews with different people that have seen a flying saucer. The
first interview is with Lewis Stebbin - sp? - who had seen one the
previous day in upstate New York; Stebben was the treasure of Warren
County, New York and was interviewed from Glen Falls. The date on this
MP3 is 1947 and it mentions the housing shortage. They also say they have
someone up in an airplane looking for a UFO during the program.

The final MP3 is dated 1949 and is a CBS radio news special called "The
Flying Saucers" hosted by Edward R. Murrow. It runs 31:00, so it's
probably got a speed problem. It's basically a round-up and conjecture
about UFO sightings that CBS reporters investigated over the past few
months.

The dates on these are probably not accurate and someone who could do some
digging working with internal references in the shows could pin them down.

I was advised today by Saundra Jordan that her father, Owens Pomeroy,
died this morning, July 18th. Owens, an OTR fan, author, and
collector was the co-founder of the Golden Radio Buffs of Maryland
and had served that Baltimore club in several capacities for many years.

Viewing will be at Bruzdzinski Funeral Home, 1407 Old Eastern Avenue,
Essex, MD 21221 on Monday July 21st from 3 to 5 PM and from 7 to 9
PM. The funeral will take place on Tuesday, July 22nd, at 11 AM in
that funeral home, followed by burial at a nearby cemetery.

Flowers may be sent to the funeral home: their telephone number is

Actually I don't know if the voice on the Roswell radio report is Nebel or
not. I used to listen to Nebel in his last years on radio, but I haven't
heard him since. I see there are recordings of his show from 1957 and 1958 on
that site, but I haven't had a chance to listen yet. I wll just relying on
the information on the site. So perhaps the recording is real, just not
Nebel. or perhaps there is another real report out there.

Subject: Joseph Julian

Hello:
I was looking through some old correspondence and came across a letter from
Joseph Julian concerning his stint on an AMERICAN IN ENGLAND series written
by Norman Corwin. I sent Joe cassette copies of the number of shows I had in
the series. This is his reply to [removed]
Feb. 21st 1976
Dear Ken,
Forgive my delay in acknowledging receipt of your generous gift of the
AMERICAN IN ENGLAND cassettes. The only ridiculous excuse I have is that my
cassette player has been on the bum and I wanted to play them before
responding. It was very odd and fascinating experience listening to myself
coming from a theatre of war over thirty years ago, as a piece of living
history. And the quality was surprisingly good - at least much better than I
expected. I wonder where these originally cam from? Probably from the BBC in
London because if they were taken off the air here there would be a lot of
oceanic noises and static that I don't detect in these cassettes. Do you know
if any of this series exists as taken off the air on this side of the
Atlantic.
(Note: I also sent Julian a radio production I was working on. He comments on
that, but goes on to say important words about radio drama)
Your production was remarkably well done, I thought, considering the limited
resources you had to draw on. And, as you say, (except for the fun) for what?
It's all money and commercials now. It's sad that we are the only major
country in the world that doesn't have regular programs of good radio drama,
with their best writers writing for the medium. I read that Edward Albee has
just written an original hour and a half radio drama - which I guess will get
some attention. It's a step, but will take a lot more to achieve a
renaissance. But, let's keep hoping.
Best regards and thanks again,
JOE JULIAN

Here is a list of the shows and those that I was able to send him:

AN AMERICAN IN ENGLAND

1. LONDON BY CLIPPER --- 8/3/42
2. LONDON TO DOVER ---	8/10/42
3. RATION ISLAND ---	8/17/42

(Shows 1, 2, 3 - I did not have and could not send them on)

4. WOMEN OF BRITAIN --- 8/24/42
5. YANKS ARE HERE ---	8/31/42
6. ANGLO-AMERICAN ANGLE	---	9/7/42

The following shows I had and all were done in the USA:

1. CROMER ---	12/1/42
2. HOME IS WHERE YOU HANG YOUR HELMET ---	12/8/42
3. ANGLE-AMERICAN ANGLE - (repeat, did not send it on) --- 12/15/42
4. CLIPPER HOME	---	12/22/42

I'm sure these are not all the shows done, but this was what I had and was
very pleased to have sent them on to the star of this series. Joe kept up his
correspondence with me and, in another letter, said he was going to come to
Los Angels at the beginning of 1977. He wanted to visit me at PPB and see
what we had preserved in OTR. Unfortunately, he passed away before the
beginning of the year, so I never met him personally.
If you can, get a copy of his book THIS WAS RADIO. Well written, very
insightful look at the golden age of radio and, the blacklisting period, of
which he became a victim. If you love radio as Joe Julian did, read this and
it will take you back into the world of great radio drama and a look a world
that no longer exists.

From Those Were The Days --

7/20

1935 - NBC debuted G-men. The show was later renamed Gangbusters.

7/25

1933 - The first broadcast of The Romance of Helen Trent was heard. The
show continued on the air for 7,222 episodes and 27 years. Amazingly,
Helen stayed at 35 years of age throughout the entire series. The show
used two Helen Trent's over the years. The first Helen was played by
Virginia Clark (for 11 years) and the second by Julie Stevens (for 16
years).

1933 - During his fourth Fireside Chat, [removed] President Franklin D.
Roosevelt showed why the homey, warm, comfortable discussion was,
indeed, a fireside chat. The President stopped the discussion on the air
and asked for a glass of water, which he then sipped. Newsman Robert
Trout is credited with coming up with the name, Fireside Chat, because
of real moments like this.

1943 - Foreign Assignment, was first heard on Mutual. The title role of
Brian Berry was played by Jay Jostyn, who also starred in another
popular radio drama, Mr. District Attorney.
