Subject: What happened to Peg Lynch on BBC4?
Does anyone know what happened to the BBC Radio 4 show about Peg Lynch that
was supposed to air today (Tuesday) at 6:30 AM EST? I was pretty bummed not
to hear it. I noted on their web programme guide that 6:30 was the proper
time.
If anyone knows what day it may have been rescheduled, would you kindly drop
me a line?
Much thanks!

This was a series broadcast to Latin America over W2XAD/W2XAF in
Schenectady between 1937 and 1939. It was mostly operatic/concert music,
with all announcements and commentary in Spanish. Some of the programs
include extended commenatries which are probably some sort of news
commentary/propaganda.
I have dubs of several of these programs, and they're pleasant listening
even if you don't speak the language (which I don't.)

Were photographs sent by radio back then?
Radio Fax was possible, the problem is that I don't remember the years.
Probable during the late 40's and early 50's when I was had just gotten into
building kit radios and listening to shortwave. This was before 24 hour
programming on stations.
WGN (Worlds Greatest Newspaper), used to send the front page of the Chicago
Tribune by radio fax over night. WGN was and still is a clear channel station,
so if you had the right equipment you could get the Trib's first page anywhere
the signals went.

Except for a BBC press release announcing the show, I can't find any mention

anywhere on their website or in their program listings.

Subject: Re: Jim Scancorrelle
We use to live in Charlotte and back in the early 1970's I met Jim
Scancorelli (probably not spelled correctly) and we became friends. Our
interest was OTR. He and I had collections of about the same size and we
traded back and forth.
This was at a time when he was working for the person who was drawing the
comic strip Gasoline Alley. After we moved from Charlotte, we lost touch
and years later when I found his address and phone number, I found that the
phone number no longer worked.
Right now I'm in Charlotte attending the Charlotte Film Festival and I'd
like to give Jim a call. Does anyone here have his phone number or his
email address to I can give him a call? Thanks.

Subject: A Gram of rant in mid-steam
Friend Martin Grams told of the Film Con attendee who refused to buy a DVD
when he realized that the disk was not a studio/commercial release. This guy
chewed out the seller,. chastising him for having the nerve of selling a
pirate DVD. When the latter informed the irate gentleman that the film was
never released by its studio, and that this was the only way to see it, then
the complainer continued to berate the hapless vendor, for the studio's
decision not to release the film!
Some years ago, I attended the first international convention of the "Sons of
the Desert", the international Laurel and Hardy appreciation society. There
were a lot of people selling and buying films. In one booth, a projector was
showing the Mickey Mouse segment from "Fantasia", better known to music
lovers as "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". Fantasia has always been a favorite
of mine, but that segment is my very least favorite part. Not especially
that I dislike Mickey Mouse, but he seemed so out of place to me amidst the
great music. I know, I know, I am very much in the minority on this. For
most people, that's their favorite part, but I am not [removed] know of a
number of people who agree with me. BTW, I've always regretted that Mr.
Disney chose never to issue his planned sequel(s). In my opinion, I think
that his successors virtually ruined that masterpiece by issuing it with a
new soundtrack some years back.
The price was reasonable, especially considering that any film collector at
that point knows (about 30 years ago before the huge popularity of videos),
that one legally could not then buy his own copy of any part of "Fantasia",
or for that matter any Disney film (and many MGM items, especially "Gone With
the Wind". I walked away, but by the time I got halfway across the large
room, I realized I was a damn fool, and turned around to buy it. I couldn't
have been gone more than a minute. By the time I stood in front of that
table again, the film was [removed] up by a buyer more hep than I!
But my response to Martin's anecdote is even more in tune with his story.
Some years ago, in connection with my Arthur Godfrey researches, I attended
the AOPA convention (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) held in Atlantic
City. It was a rare and fruitful expedition. The Arthur Godfrey Memorial
Foundation (AGMF) had a booth, mixed in with many aviation-related displays.
Each had its exhibitor's name on a banner across the top of the back of the
booth.
I was talking with my friend Gilbert Geoffrion, the President and Founder of
AGMF. Suddenly a chap came along eyeing all the name banners. He spotted
ours. Looking directly at me for some reason, he proceeded practically to
scream at us, "Arthur Godfrey! That S-- O- B--! He buzzed the tower at
Teterboro Airport, and they never did anything about it. He got clean away!"
This tirade continued for about a minute, before our ventor ran out of
spleen. When he quieted down, I gently inquired of him the one question
which really didn't need to be asked in that venue, where he was among
something like 20,000 others: "Sir, are you a pilot?" He answered proudly,
"Yes, I most certainly am!"
Then I said, "Sir, how would you like it if the FAA took away your Airman's
Certificate for six months?" (That's the pilot's license.)
His attitude changed mid-rant: "Why those dirty $##)*_((*##$#^&+(*()'s! Did
they do that? Those _+*&*&$#$#@_(*)(&)(*(*'s!" When I explained more
details of this infamously reported event, he deranged further about the
inequity and injustice of that certain government agency. As he wandered
away, we could hear him still mumbling his opinion about the FAA and
government in general. We both hoped that he calmed down a lot, before he
got into his plane to fly home! They say it takes all kinds!
Happy flying! Lee Munsick
