Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!

A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Golden Age of Radio Theater

I remember this program well. A teacher at school pointed me to it back in
1987. KOMA in OK City used to broadcast it on weeknights and on Sunday
nights for six hours.

I owe a lot to Mr. Ives and this show. It introduced me to many good series
back in the days when my otr hobby was still budding. I didn't care about
the comedies they used to play, but I learned about Tales of the Texas
Rangers, Night Beat, X-Minus One, The Hall of Fantasy, Barrie Craig, The
Haunting Hour, The Chase and The Weird Circle through this show.

Ted, if you ever find a way to distribute copies or are looking for a buyer,
contact me.

Subject: The Shadow knows TODAY is the 80th anniversary
 of the modern character magazine
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Today is the anniversary of the birth of the modern hero magazine!
80 years ago, on March 6th, 1931, the first issue of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE
appeared on American newsstands. THE SHADOW MAGAZINE was the first modern
character/hero magazine, reviving a heroic fiction format that had
disappeared decades earlier with the demise of dime novels.
In the pages of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE, magician-turned-hournalist Walter
B. Gibson refashioned the sinister narrator of CBS-Radio's DETECTIVE STORY
MAGAZINE HOUR into the first Dark Hero, creating a crimebusting supersleuth
who embodied the iconic power of classic melodrama villains like Dracula.
Gibson's novels introduced the concept of super-crooks and super-crime, and
became the template for hero pulps and scores of future comic book
superheroes, many of which were created by devoted readers of THE SHADOW
MAGAZINE including Jerry Siegel, Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Jack Kirby and
Stan Lee. In fact, the 1936 Shadow pulp novel "Partners of Peril" was
adapted scene-by-scene and character-for-character, as the first Batman
story in DETECTIVE COMICS #27.
In honor of this anniversary, Anthony Tollin's Sanctum Books has just
reprinted "The Living Shadow," the debut Shadow novel, and for the first
time has restored the original text as it originally appeared in 1931 in the
first issue of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE. (The text was revised/updated when it
was reprinted in a 1934 hardcover which became the source for future annual
and paperback reprints.)
THE SHADOW Volume 47, reprinting "The Living Shadow" and "The Black
Hush" with historical articles by Will Murray and Anthony Tollin, will
arrive at comic book specialty shops on March 16th, and can also be
purchased from Sanctum Books (orders@[removed]), Radio Spirits,
Radio Archive, Adventure House, Michael Chomko, Vintage Library, Bud's Art
Books and in Canada from Girasol Collectables. --Anthony Tollin

announcer/producer/director Bill Forman? Thanks.

Subject: Tom Mix mystery photo

In an effort to solve a mystery that has been puzzling a few of us radio
historians for the past week, I posted a photograph on the MANC web-site.
>From what we have learned, this autographed photo of Tom Mix is no different
than any other autographed photo sent out to fans and listeners.
However, it's not Tom Mix. And we ruled out the possibility of the radio
actors who played the title role on the radio program. So now we're
stumped.

If you visit [removed] and click on the
"contest" button, you'll see the photo. At Jack French's wonderful
suggestion, we'll give away a free weekend admission to anyone who can
provide us with the name of the person who is in this photo. (And we
will need some sort of proof of identification.) If you want to share the
link and contest to friends via e-mail, newsletter, blog, Facebook
or whatever venue you can spread the word, please do. We'd like to know who
the mystery man is.

Subject: Duffy's Tavern

I'm pleased to announce that the DUFFY'S TAVERN book is close to being
finished for Bear Manor Media. Ben has had this project contracted for a
number years and
ever since I did that major three-part article for SPERDVAC's Radiogram about
ten years ago, a number of people have sent me photos for the book, including
a digital
photo of Ed Gardner's apron from the proud owner, who tracked me down. It's
been a work in progress for a few years. While I have been able to acquire a
number of
photographs, I am seeking any I do not have for the book. Obviously, I will
mail a complimentary copy of the book when it gets published about a year
from now, as
well as provide acknowledgement and photo credit.

Small note I'd like to add: PLEASE do not go plucking photos off web-sites
and Google. 99 percent of the time the photos are not high enough resolution
and unable to
determine who owns the rights to them, they cannot be used. Last time I
placed this request, over fifty people did exactly this (half of them
claiming the photos
were from their personal collection). I am seeking first-gen scans of
photographs from vintage magazines or glossy photos, publicity materials,
etc. I am certain
there are a number of collectors who have such materials available and would
like to see their name in print and get a free book. (First come, first serve
-- it has to
be a photo I don't have already. I cannot credit three people for the same
photo.)

Subject: An "A" for an eye

For journalistic types like me, I was thrilled to find a couple of pages in
this week's Time (March 14) devoted to evolving logos of famous brands.
Trivia like this has been a fascination for me about as much as page design,
harking back to eons ago when I was a student in journalism school. And of
the nine brands that Time selected for presentation -- how they have emerged
from humble beginnings to the images we identify today -- two of the nine
were of national networks. NBC's pilgrimage began with a familiar
microphone and went through the peacock era to a point that the company
wishes to be known now for much more than its signature chain. Then there
is the CBS eye which, if I'm recalling correctly, Frank Stanton assigned to
an artist to create in 1951. It's the only one of the nine for which there
is just one image, and Time notes it has had little retouching in the last
six decades because it was "strikingly modern when it first appeared." I
don't know what it is but there seems to be something comforting in
realizing that somebody got it right.
