Subject: Captain Midnight's First Flight

In Joe Mackey's listing of dates, the following is listed:

1939 - Captain Midnight was heard on radio for the first time -- on
Mutual. The Captain flew his single-engine plane all over the place
fighting crime. Talk about a popular show: Ovaltine dropped its
sponsorship of Little Orphan Annie to climb on board with Captain
Midnight. The show was also sponsored by Skelly Oil.

Actually, the show premiered as a Skelly Oil syndicated show on 17
October 1938 (Dunning's listed it as 1939, but that's obviously a typo),
with Ed Prentiss in the title role. Because of a misunderstanding,
Prentiss missed out for the casting tryouts (he thought he'd locked the
part), so Bill Bouchey played the role for one year, then it reverted to
Prentiss for the rest of the show's run as a serial. The first Ovaltine
sponsored show (and the first network airing) was on 30 September 1940.
The Secret Squadron came with the Ovaltine years. Prior to that, the
listener's fan club was Captain Midnight's Flight Patrol.

Actually Captain Midnight was first broadcast in 1938. I did some research
with the Chicago Tribune one time, and I think the exact date was Oct. 10 (I
could be in error). It was syndicated by recording to stations in the
mid-west (and sponsored by Skelly Oil) until Sept 30, 1940, when Ovaltine
took over and moved the program to Mutual.

After reading the biography of Korla Pandit, linkable through Michael C.
Gwynne's message to this digest, the mention of the Smokey Topaz jewel
gracing Korla's turban struck me a bit curious given the times I used to see
the gentleman in the halls of the various radio studios of Los Angeles, I
noted him wearing on his turban a dangling tear shaped pearl of some sort.

At the time I often wondered if the bauble was within his peripheral vision
and he possibly could see the bottom of that pearl and if it at all bothered
him any. I never asked him.

Upon reflection it , of course, I realized it was a bit too high above his
forhead for its dangling ever to cause any sort of confusion.

As for the mention of the smokey topaz, I guess perhaps for his televison
show he changed the accessory for the pearl was a bit small and likely
unnoticable on camera.

Subject: Re:Larry Ferrari

Anyone ever hear of Larry Ferrari ([removed])? I remember my
parents tuning in to Larry's TV show, I think it was on Sundays. I grew
up in the Philadelphia area, and no one I know has ever heard of him,
so maybe Larry was a local Philly guy. He would just play what I
suppose is called "lounge" music as the camera panned over him, and the
viewer saw him, his hands, and the organ from various angles through
the whole show. I don't think he talked much, if at all. I absolutely
loved his show.

Yes, I remember him! Vaguely . . . the Philly part is right - I believe he
was on the radio as well as TV. He made appearances in Trenton, playing the
organ at the Lincoln Theater (movie house, long gone).

Since you're from Philly, you'll be glad to know the organ at the former
Wanamakers is in good shape and being used regularly despite a few corporate
changes of ownership - and, since many radio broadcasts were made from
Wanamaker's, we're "on topic."

Subject: Diary of Fate

Jim Taylor asked for a lot history so here is my contribution and opinion on
the diary. The program was syndicated in late 1947 and 1948 for a total of
28 episodes aired from Dec. 15 through Aug. 10th. It was originally on
Monday and finished on Tuesday.

It must not have been picked by many stations or it would have had more
episodes (Opinion) In 1948 Mondays and Tuesdays had very great programs
that would be hard to compete against

I have 2 episodes and I had to go to my vault to find them, "The Entry of
Joe Mattlok" 3/16/48 a stop light changes his life and "The Entry of Tyler
White" 4/6/48 a lost dog is the cause of him for being in prison for murder
that he didn't commit. I don't really care for the program. Fate always wins
out in the end.

The host of show is keeper of . The Diary Fate, who has a very sinister
voice and the episodes are from the "Diary"

I can't see a close comparison to "The Whistler" But it could be close to
"The Mysterious Traveler" kind of.
The Diary had cast members that were actor who were well known . Like Herb
Litton, Ruth Parrott, Ivan Dittmer, Tyler McVey, Gloria Blondell , Vingia
Gregg, Howard McNear to name a few.

Subject: Damon Runyon

For those looking for info on Damon Runyon here is a great web site that
tell all. I personally don't think I would go into detail about his life to
young Kids. Most of writing is about underwrold charcters. He often ends up
telling their good sides.

[removed]#Biography and 19 episodes are
included.

The syndicated "Damon Runion Theater"are radio adeptations of his short
stories about Broadway Charters as told By "Broadway" John Brown. There are
52 episodes avaiable. they were syndicated on Mutual Netwok from 1/2/49
until 12/25/49. For episode titles and dates see "Jerry Haendige's Vintage
Radio Logs" The actors are all great radio actors.
