"The Poppy Lady"
On this Veterans Day, I post to ask if anyone knows of OTR recorded
appearances of Moina Belle Michael, "The Poppy Lady." In 1918, she came up
with the idea of using poppies to memorialize the dead and to honor the
veterans of World War I.
The idea was adopted by the American Legion, and quickly spread to France and
the British Commonwealth. For the years before World War II, wearing poppies
on November 11th was a national custom, and by the 1930's the sale of the
poppies was raising about $50 million dollars a year in the [removed] and the
[removed], with the money going towards veterans programs. Wearing poppies on
November 11th mainly died out in the [removed] after World War II, though some
American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans
posts still sell paper poppies this time of year as a fundraiser. It's still
a very big deal throughout the British Commonwealth, and there have been many
news stories recently on an installation of over 800,000 ceramic poppies in
the moat of the Tower of London to commemorate the British and Commonwealth
soldiers who died in World War I.
Moina, my great-grandfather's sister, lived until 1944, and dedicated her
life to promoting the poppy as a fundraising symbols for veterans. She was
honored with a commemorative [removed] postage stamp in 1948. Her autobiography,
"The Miracle Flower," says that she gave many interviews on radio during the
1920's and 1930's promoting the poppy and other veterans causes.
I am seeking information on any of her appearances on the public information
and news programs of the day. References to her or the poppy during other
programs are also of interest. I am part of a group that is starting to plan
for the upcoming 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, and hope to
incorporate any material found into the celebrations. I also firmly believe
that her work for veterans needs to be honored and continued. Any assistance
in finding recordings or references to Moina Michael will be gratefully
appreciated and acknowledged.

11/9
1948 This is Your Life debuted on NBC. Ralph Edwards hosted the radio
show for two years before it moved to television.
The show was on TV, still hosted by Ralph Edwards, in the mid-1950s,
when I saw it. I think I heard part of it once on radio around that
time, too.

As mentioned in Digest #99
My friend is looking for an OTR program called Christmas Fantasy,
narrated by Robin Morrow.
It is broadcast by KDUZ AM radio in Minnesota each holiday season. They
should be able to help you with your search.
