1938 - The NBC Blue network presented "Information Please" for the first
time. The show was moderated by Clifton Fadiman.
1939 - The Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, NY was the scene of a
memorable dual-network radio broadcast of Glenn Miller and his
orchestra. Both NBC and Mutual carried the event, which was attended by
1,800 people in the casino ballroom.
5/18
1942 - "David Harding, Counterspy" was heard on the NBC Blue network for
the first time. The program enjoyed a long run on radio, lasting for 15
years.
5/19
1921 - The first opera presented in its entirety over the radio was
broadcast by 9ZAF in Denver, CO. The opera, "Martha", aired from the
Denver Auditorium.
5/20
1933 - "Charlie Chan" was heard for the final time on the NBC Blue radio
network after only six months on the air. Not to worry. Several revivals
of the Chinese detective were on the air for years later ...
5/22
1955 - Jack Benny signed off his last first run network radio broadcast
after a run of 23 years. The show continued in repeats for several more
years.
5/23
1922 - The first debate to be heard on radio was broadcast on WJH in
Washington, DC. The two debaters argued about the topic of Daylight
Saving Time with the audience acting as the judge.

Subject: Last week's Nostalgia Expo
Folks;
Been running flat-out since arriving home from the Nostalgia Expo, but I
will be posting something sometime in the next few days-to-a-week with my
thoughts (and of course some photos and video!) - and sometime by the end of
the week I hope to start going through the over 200 GIGABYTES of video data I
brought home from the convention. Yipe!
I did get to meet a few of you, and sincerely apologize for having to dash
off quickly for one reason or another. I got to sit next to Kathy Garver for
an hour; and yes, she is every bit as pretty today as she was on Family
Affair, so be properly envious! (Don't worry, Kate was there to make sure I
didn't swoon.) Mel Simons and I clowned around in front of everyone, too,
while Kate distributed chocolate bars to folks in the crowd. I am also a
little embarassed and yet deeply appreciative for receiving one of the Bob
Hastings Awards - this is especially moving considering I knew Bob - it's
still hard for me to believe he's really gone from us.
As it has been for the past few years, it was literally a whirlwind of
experiences which always takes a few days to process and put into
perspective, but honest I'll get there sometime in the next week. And man,
was it a blast!
Charlie
