on 2/27/06 11:18 PM, Michael Ogden asked:

Another MP3 dealer is offering a SHADOW disc that supposedly has "The Red
Macaw," the second Welles Blue Coal show. I doubt very much whether that is
the [removed], Macaw. Anybody know for sure?

Someone was nice enough to email me an MP3 of the episode being listed
as "The Red Macaw." It was actually "Death from the Deep." Someone had
apparently obtained the second episode of the 1938 Goodrich summer season
and assigned it the date and title of the second episode of the 1937-38
Blue Coal winter season. Unfortunately, Welles second outing as The Shadow
is still lost. --ANTHONY TOLLIN

Subject: JellO Freezing Mix

Charlie asks:

There is an ad in it for Jello Freezing Mix, or Freezing Syrups.
Make your own ice cream without a churn. And guess what? It also
came in six delicious flavors. Strawberry, Tutti-Frutti, Maple Walnut,
Chocolate, Vanilla, and Orange Pineapple.

Does anyone remember these, or if there were any ads on the program for
them?

Yes, there are a few ads on the Benny program for these. In fact, I think
this product was test-marketed in the New York/New Jersey area, and the East
Coast copies of the shows have specific, unique inset ads that were only for
these areas.

This is a childhood memory, most likely distorted by too much time.

Perhaps someone could verify or straigten me out.

My childhood memory is that after Rathbone finished with the Holmes series
someone came up with a show in which he played himself being besiged by
people who thought he was reallly Holmes. Each week he would protest, but
each week he solved the mystery. I don't remember it lasting very long.

Subject: Edward McHugh - The Gospel Singer

Hello

Greetings from Dundee, Scotland. In the February 3rd edition of OTR Digest,
you printed the obituary details of one Edward McHugh, The Gospel Singer.
You wrote that he was born in Dundee, Scotland [removed] and died [removed] I
was intrigued by this entry and would like to know more about this
once-famous person from Dundee.

Information is relatively scarce about him. Looking at the standard
reference works, I find he had a 15 minute network show, 5 night a week from
1933-1943 and that he is credited with popularising the much loved hymn '
The Old Rugged Cross '. Does any OTR Digest reader know anything else about
him? What happened to his career after 1943? Are they any photos of him
extant? I would love to know and share such information with others here in
the place of his birth.

Thank you

Jim Gordon

Subject: James Lipton as Dan Reid on XM

There has been a bit of buzz lately about James Lipton in his role as Dan
Reid on The Lone Ranger, as well as a bit of buzz about OTR on XM. So, I
thought that it might interest the group to know that two of Lipton's
episodes are being broadcast on XM this week! They are "Dan's Strange
Behavior" and "A Nephew is Found." They were originally broadcast on 12/23/42
and 12/25/42 respectively. They next air on XM at 10pm Tuesday (2/28) and
will air again later this week on Friday (3/3) at Noon ET, Friday (3/3) at
8pm ET, and Satueday (3/4) at Noon ET. Enjoy!

Subject: pseudonyms for script writers

From: Anthony Tollin <sanctumotr@[removed];
1. Did otr scriptwriters ever use pseudonyms at all?

Yes, often because they were under contract to other series/sponsors
and were moonlighting on the side. <much interesting stuff snipped>

Given that the McCarthy-era--late 1940's to early 1950's--ran its course
during the course of big network radio, I would also guess that a lot of
pseudonyms were adopted because of the various blacklists.

This interests me a bit more these days because my mother is in a nursing
home and, despite a lifetime of being rather casual about matters of life
and death, seems to be realizing that at age 86 her biological clock may be
running out. Ergo, she's talking.

One thing she revealed is that our family seemed to be a prime target for
various Federal investigators during the reign of the good Senator. I
suspect that this is because my father met two major criteria: he worked in
a sensitive government laboratory during World War II (specifically, the
Aberdeen Proving Grounds, where the first computers were used) and he was
Jewish.

My parents likely were not politically active at the University of Chicago
during the 1930's, but they were graduate students, and there were graduate
students there who were leftist, if not Communist. So there: a nation under
siege by Communists can't be too careful.

I do recall our having taken a few trips to Canada during those times, and
there were some discussions as to what would happen if we had to live there
and/or if my parents had to leave the US without it. Given my parents' love
of debate, I thought they were hypothetical discussions at the time.
Apparently they weren't.

A very interesting article on the recently deceased Dale White, who played
Don Wilson's son Harlow on Jack Benny's TV program.

Even though this isn't about radio, White's choice to leave acting and the
public stage following the conclusion of Benny's weekly series will probably
still be interesting to this audience.

Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!

A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!
