Subject: Re: Thin Man Question
In response to Kenneth Clarke's question, Nick Charles states that he is
running his wife's timber and railroad businesses. I believe Nick (aka
William Powell) says this in both broadcasts on the Lux Radio Theater of
The Thin Man (June 1936) and After the Thin Man (June 1940).
As to Nora's maiden name, that's real good question! I don't recall hearing
it in the films but perhaps a clue can be found (after all, this is a
detective story) in Daschell Hammett's (sp.) original novel.
BTW, William Powell was a frequent star on Lux during the late 1930s, when he
was recuperating from colon surgery and was not well enough to make films. On
the other hand Myrna Loy (Nora) didn't make another appearance on Lux
following her 1936 performance until broadcasting the sequel in 1940.

I'm sure these cartoons have been mentioned in the past. They are
surprisingly easy to find on [removed] found a copy of these cartoons at a local Goodwill
store for about a dollar. As to why there were only two made (Rasslin'
Match and The Lion Tamer-Both from 1934) Gosden and Correll recorded the
soundtracks before seeing the cartoon footage of themselves. And when they did They
were offended at the way the cartoons [removed] broke their contract with
the studio making the cartoons (I think it was Van Beuren)..

My questions to all of you are:
What was Nora's maiden name (if indeed, it was ever

what was the source of all her family's wealth?
I don't recall hearing or reading Nora's maiden name.
Her fancy family background is the subject of the second film, After the
Thin Man, located on Nob Hill, San Francisco. The family history is not
mentioned beyond cousins and aunts, etc.
In the Thin Man film, Nora's father had died a year after Nick and Nora
were married leaving her a narrow-gage railway, lumber mill and "several
other things".This is in agreement with the book by Dashiell Hammett. In
the film "Another Thin Man" there is also mention of a mining company.
I have been listening to the Fat Man series this week.

Subject: Alternative Tax
The March 14, 1943 episode of the Great Gildersleeve
finds our hero figuring his tax return. He mentions
that the alternative tax doesn't apply to him. I
immediately thought of the Alternative Minimum Tax but
a quick Googling said the AMT was devised in 1969. Was
this just a special war-time tax or was it a
predecessor to the current alternative tax?
Thanks,
Ryan

In late July or early August I heard a BBC, Radio-4 drama on Afternoon Play or
Saturday Play called either "Stan" or Stan and Ollie." It was essentially a
monologue by Stan who was sitting at Ollie's bedside as he was dying. I was
transfixed for 45m. Tom Courtney played Stan [removed] to the BBC site, I

She's got many friends here on the list, of course, but if anyone wants to
send a message via email to my addy, I'd be happy to see that she gets it.
(Just put "for Elizabeth" or something in the subject line so I'll know
it's not spam.) Her email address remains active, btw, but she's got a
backlog of messages that is growing by leaps & bounds the longer she can't
access it.
Or if anyone would like to send a card or note via snail mail, I could
deliver those easily enough, too. I'm sure she'd be pleased to hear from
folks.

Hello, is this Suspense play complete anywhere? Anyone have it in mp3
format? He's one of my favorites, and I'd really like to have this in its
complete form if it's possible. Please write to me if you have it in mp3, or
some other format.
Thanks a lot.

Mark Kinsler remarked:
While pursuing scholarly research to discover the true name of Chilly
Willy's beloved stove (I believe it was Smokey Joe, but results are still
pending) I came upon a comprehensive discussion of Calvin and the Colonel.
At the end, it mentions that there was an effort to animate the adventures
of the gentlemen in the 1930's that resulted in two short movie cartoons.
4 episodes of Calvin and the Colonel are available on VHS and DVD. The two
1930s animated cartoons of Amos n' Andy are available on VHS and DVD (as a
double feature with CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK, the movie) and all are available
