Can anyone tell me if this includes the program in which Arthur Godfrey
appeared, and opened with Molly looking out her window as usual, but talking
with Arthur Godfrey replying from a window across the airshaft?
All the descriptions I've heard indicate this is from late in the series,
and consists mostly of the filmed episodes that take place in suburbia. So
it's unlikely (hope I'm wrong) that the Godfrey cameo is in this batch.

Subject: Old lady Trent
Bill Jaker points out for our edification, surely with tongue in cheek:
each of those 7,222 episodes lasted 15 minutes, which adds up to
1,805 1/2 hours. There are 8,760 hours in a year, which would give
35-year old Helen more than enough time for her romance and anything
else she needed to do. If you figure that the show was actually 14:30,
with a few minutes out to sell some Kolynos Tooth Powder there was no
way she could ever make it to 36.
Bill, if she did nothing but tell Gil Whitney hundreds (thousands?) of times
in real time that she couldn't make up her mind whether to marry him or not,
the poor guy would be destroyed, wouldn't he? It was bad enough that she
kept him on the string for 27 years before riding off into the sunset with
somone else on the final installment while announcer Fielden Farrington
informed us "this concludes the present series of The Romance of Helen Trent
broadcasts." Frank and Anne Hummert, the entrepreneural prospering duo
behind it all, could never allow heroines Helen Trent and Ellen (Young
Widder) Brown to reach the altar. If they had, decades of premise would
have been blown in an instant. They were hopeful in 1956 when Ellen left
the air, and again in 1960 when Helen bit the dust, the networks would take
pity on those resolute ladies and restore them by popular demand. Alas, it
never happened for either.
Perish the thought that poor Gil be turned down so many times in a condensed
few months according to Bill's timetable! Why, that would have been
ludicrous, even melodramatic, wouldn't it?

Subject: Norman Corwin and Red Channels
At the risk of raising the ire of fellow Digesters, like Ron
Sayles declaring Fred Allen wasn't funny and having to duck and
find a hidey-hole for a while, re Irene's statement: "The idea of
Norman Corwin being on the list is amazing considering he
presented some of the most memorable and patriotic programming of
WWII."
I won't argue they were sometimes masterful presentations, but I
must say I find the language often troubling, smacking of
one-worldism (United Nations) for the sake of peace and
"progress," forgoing [removed] sovereignty in the pursuit. I don't
know about Mr. Corwin's beliefs or motives, but I think it's
clear enough why those who saw a Commie behind every bush in
those days thought they might have spotted one in his case.
