Subject: OTR Audio Books
RyanO commented:
I see that there are a number of books available on old-time radio
and on specific series such as Dragnet, Johnny Dollar, The Green Hornet,
etc. I am a blind guy and wonder if any of these books are available in
audio form. If anyone can give me any information, I would very much
appreciate it. Some of these books have been around for years and I can't
wait for the day when I can read them.
This question has come up repeatedly on the Digest. Answer is still the same.
Whenever a book is registered through the [removed] Copyright Office, there is a
specific
section on the copyright form that asks if the registrant will allow the book
to
become available in audio book form. And every author has chimed in to say
that
they do check "yes." It's up to the Library of Congress to make it into an
audio
book, and some like Jack French's PRIVATE EYELASHES has become an audio book.
Recent discussion with a number of higher-ups in this hobby has generated a
behind-the-scenes issue where someone who is "visually impaired" has been
making
arrangements for OTR books to go to audio format, but is doing so without
respecting
the author's stance. There is a polite way of making such arrangements, but
they
go a bit too far. In fact, one radio show host recently discovered his
internet radio
programs were being recorded without his permission and uploaded on the
internet
from this same individual. The reason for hesitation is underlying copyrights
and
trademark permissions as agreed in contracts with copyright and trademark
holders.
And they don't seem to understand that a polite request and a brief
discussion can
assure permission without jeopardizing both parties for a potential lawsuit.
Funny story: I wrote an article about THE GREEN HORNET for a comic magazine
and
I sent them a bunch of photos. They asked "Where's Bruce Lee?" I asked them,
"What
do you mean?" They explained that they wanted photos of Bruce Lee as Kato from
the television series, for the article. I explained that I could not provide
photos
of Lee under my contract with Bruce Lee Enterprises. Under the contract, they
granted me permission to reprint three photos in my GREEN HORNET book, with Lee
as Kato, but the contract did not stipulate magazine articles. I explained to
the
magazine editor that if I supplied them photos of Bruce Lee for the article,
and
my name is listed as the author of that article, I am in violation of the
contract,
and they can withdraw the permission, in writing, thus halting sales of my
GREEN HORNET book. I initially got permission because a publishing company
near me
published a book about Bruce Lee and they sued the publishing company and won.
The magazine editor insisted HE would put the photos in the article himself
and
I told him if he did, the article could not have my name as the author and my
name could not be mentioned at all in the entire issue. And I stated all this
in writing, explaining if I am in violation as a result of his decision, having
already explained why I could not provide Bruce Lee photos, he would have to
pay my attorney fees should an issue arise. He chose not to have any Bruce Lee
photos in the article at all. Long story short, it was a contractual LEGAL
issue.
And this is one example of why when people choose to make audio books without
permission,
or reprint magazine articles on web-sites without permission, they don't
understand
that it puts authors like myself and others into jeopardy with a potential
lawsuit.
And nine times out of ten, permission is granted under certain conditions that
protect both parties -- with the exception of the guy I mentioned above who
doesn't seem to care and is copying everyone's work and posting it on the web
without permission.
Bear Manor Media, by the way, recently struck a deal with a major company
where
some of their books will become audio books so if you e-mail Ben at Bear
Manor Media
and tell him what books you would be willing to buy if they were put into
audio form,
they can probably serve. With so many books to do, it'd be nice for them to
get an
idea of what should be done first. Oh, Ben is asking authors if they have no
objection
having their books put into audio format, even sending contracts to cover the
bases,
so even he respects the copyrights and ownership of the authors' books.

Don Dean (Orcats) would like to say a special thank you to "Evelyn Ryan
and
Bill Jakers" for passing around a "Get Well" card for him at the FOTR
Convention
last month. Don said "With all these special signatures I will
certainly keep
this card as part of my OTR collection."
Those signing
the card were: Evelyn Ryan, Bill Jakers, Jay Hickerson,
Arther
Anderson, Betty M, Edgar Russel III, Barbara Watkins, Athony Tollin, Will
Hutchins, Bobb Lynes and more than we could not cipher. Please forgive us if
we
misspelled any names or left out the last name. I couldn't make out the
spelling on a few of them. You must be a doctor.
Don's colon cancer
operation, Oct 11, was a success, it had not spread to
the lymph
nodes. We see the Oncologist on Nov 9 to see how many Chemotherapy
treatments he will need. Thank for for all your prayers. Hopefully, we will
get
to see you all "in person" at next year's convention(s).
Happy
Trails.
Don and Kathleen Dean

1932 The National Broadcasting Company opened its new studios at Radio
City in New York City. They celebrated with a gala program at Radio City
Music Hall.
I wonder whether anyone will still remember Buck Rogers by the time we
reach the 25th Century.
BTW, did anyone notice the name of the new Governor of Pennsylvania?
Tom Corbett! His Wikipedia page contains the note at the head that
"This article is about the American politician. For the fictional
character, see Tom Corbett, Space Cadet." I wonder whether, in his
several campaigns for Attorney General and Governor, any of his
opponents has ever called him a Space Cadet.

We're starting an audio book arm of BearManor Media to be helmed by ACE (Tim
Knofler) and the great Walden Hughes. We're revamping [removed]
right now and will be offering a lot of our titles soon. I've been wanting to
do this for a while now. I'm glad it's become a reality, thanks to Tim and
Walden. Coming audio books: Don Ameche, Fibber McGee & WWII, Agnes Moorehead,
Bickersons' Love Letters, Walter Tetley, Albert Salmi, Peggy Ann Garner and
some of Martin Grams' works. And more.

Subject: OTR Books on Audio
Regarding OTR books on Audio, I would think that most OTR books would not be
available from commercial publishers in audio form because of the limited
market to which they appeal. However, if you have not tried the Library of
Congress's National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped
(NLS), you should. I checked their internet catalog, and John Dunning's
Encyclopedia of OTR is available in audio form.

I've heard Louis Armstrong sing his version of "Hello Dolly!" many
times, and in each one there is a line ('This is Louis, Dolly') in which he
emphasizes the "s" in his name. When I've heard others sing the song,
however, this part of the lyric is omitted. Obviously, his version is more
memorable. I believe he sang it on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in the sixties.
