Subject: Truth or Consequences blooper
George Aust's remarks about TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES reminded me of an
Associated Press clipping I came across a few years ago dated somewhere
around 1946. Seems one night the winner of Ralph Edwards' show answered a
series of questions correctly and as a prize, she was given a particular
address of a vacant lot in the middle of a suburban residential area. The
producers had apparently hired a two-man crew to bury a bag full of silver
dollars at which the contestant was allowed to now go off and dig up her
winnings.
Problem was, apparently people in that same neighborhood recognized the
address, having heard the program, and dozens of people armed with spoons,
frying pans and shovels (according to the [removed]) began digging in the field.
By the time the contestant got to the site, it had been completely dug up
and some lucky person beat her to it. By law, the person who dug it up got
to keep it (as if the person came would come forward anyway) so the
producers gave her a consulation prize out of respect. Very funny incident.

Subject: questions for Mr. Know it All
For any Mr. Know-it-Alls out there (that's Rocky and Bullwinkle humor
there)...
1. I have failed to find any information about a Mayan archaeologist named
Keltner Williamson. Apparently Mr. Williamson was credited for supplying
information about the Mayan civilization for a horror serial broadcast over
radio in 1930. I am starting to suspect that there was no such person -
purely fictional to add a little realism to the serial. Does anyone know if
there really was any Kelter Williamson and if he existed, have any info
about him?
2. A radio actor named Bob Mentz apparently supplied animal sounds for
radio programs including monkeys. Is there any info about Bob Mentz
documented anywhere? I have struck all dead ends.
If anyone can supply any info about the two people, I'd be extremely
grateful. I figure it never hurts to ask - never know what experts are
lurking out there . . . great bunch of readers of this digest.

Subject: Who Wears the Trousers
If anyone missed this very interesting programme on Fred Allen and Portland
Hoffa on BBC Radio4 on Tuesday 25 March, you can hear it online at any time
until next Tuesday by going to <[removed]; scrolling down
to the title of the programme and clicking on "Listen". Next Tuesday, the
second in the series is on Jim and Marian Jordan and we are also promised
episodes dealing with George and Gracie, Lucy and Desi and, as already
mentioned by Laura, Jack and Mary. If these are as good as the first, they
will be essential listening for anyone interested in OTR.

Subject: Re: Miking the audience
Excellent question from Bob Fells concerning the placement of microphones to
get audience laughter and applause. I don't have the answer but I suspect
the distance between the audience and the mikes was determined by the type
of program and whether or not strong reaction was desired.
I was a regular listener to the wonderful "Voice of Firestone" program for
many years during it's long Monday night run on NBC (before it left for ABC
after NBC shamefully tried to give it a Sunday afternoon slot). The program
had a live studio audience. Although there were several musical selections
played and sung during each show, there was no audience applause until after
the headline performer of the week sang the final number. A second round of
applause followed at the completion of the show's closing theme. I assume
that Hugh James, the show's fine announcer, indoctrinated the audience
beforehand as to the protocol of the production. Both of the applause
segments were sustained and sounded as if they were originating in a concert
hall.

Subject: OTR Place names
Well, mine contribution is not the name of a street or place associated with
OTR. But I have a friend (well, [removed], acquaintance, actually) who lives on
the ocean in Massachusetts. A few years ago she and her partner acquired a
puppy. One of them wanted to give the dog a people name (George, Mary,
etc.) The other thought that since they lived on the ocean the dog's name
should have something to do with that environment. In the end, they killed
two birds with one stone. They named the dog Dinah Shore. True story.
They still have the dog.

Subject: Boston's "Allen Alley"
Hi Gang!
Thanks everybody who picked up on my thread about OTR-inspired street
names. When I first posited this query, I totally forgot that Boston named a
street "Allen's Alley" in honour of you-know-who, one of its favourite sons. I
remember now that it's off Tremont Avenue, & this I remember because here at
Talking Books, we always have to remember that in Boston, it's pronounced
TREH-mont, & not TREE-mont as it is in the Bronx.
Yours/ether--

Subject: Street Names
The recent talk of streets named after OTR stars reminds me of an article I
read probably 30 years ago.
It concerned Rudy Valle who was lobbying to have the town that he lived in, I
don't remember what it was, rename the street that he lived on in his honor.
He wanted it named "Rue de Valle."
The town fathers refused, but offered to rename a street in a trailer park
for him. He declined the honor.

Don Frey mentioned Andy Devine Blvd. in Kingman Arizona. Like him I
have visited the Andy Devine Museum only I found it interesting enough
to spend some time there.
Also there is Roy Rogers Rd. and Dale Evans Dr. in Victorville Ca where
we recently visited the Roy Rogers Museum one last time as it is going
to be moving to Branford Mo. soon. Doesn't seem right not to be located
in the west.
While there I felt compelled to buy something in the gift shop (it's
usually my wife that has those kinds of compulsions) so I found a CD of
four Sons of the Pioneers radio shows from the 40's. To my surprise I
found the shows to be really nice with the group performing more than
just the usual 'around the campfire' fare. The sound was impeccable and
I'd like to find more of their broadcasts.
Also in Clarinda Iowa there is a Glenn Miller Blvd.(the main street), a
Glenn Miller Ave.(they intersect), a Glenn Miller VFW Armory and soon a
Glenn Miller Big Band Museum and Performing Arts Cetner. He was born in
the town.
Duarte Ca. has a Glenn Miller Park. His home, Tuxedo Junction, was
located there.

Subject: An anecdote and a question
Things have been a bit strange here in Korea lately. We are on a heightened
state of alert, which last Friday meant that we had army helicopters and
jets flying over the university. In an effort to try and put things out of
my mind I decided to listen to some "Mr. Keene" files I have and finally
sort out my ISIRTA files.
Maybe it was the mood I was in but I heard something really funny in one of
the Mr. Keene episodes. While in the museum in the Egyptology section there
is a voice heard, Mr. Keene's assistant asks if it is the mummy and Mr.
Keene replies that it cannot be the mummy because they do not speak English.
I could not stop laughing as it is just so absurd.
Anyway, while I was sorting out my ISIRTA files I noticed that some of the
same files had different names. My question is are the titles of the ISIRTA
files official titles from the original series or are they names that were
later given to each episode with reference to the main sketch that was
performed in each show?
Love as always, David Rogers
