Subject: Sgt. Preston's first name
Well, I guess my question about Tonto's bullets was well answered,
and thanks. Here's another one that occurred to me: Was Sergeant
Preston's first name ever used on the radio or TV show? Wikipedia
gives his first name as William, but was this actually used on the
show, or was this added later, like the Lone Ranger's supposed first
name of "John"?

Subject: MANC Hotel
Just got two phone calls this weekend referring to the Clarion Hotel. It has
just come to my attention that the Clarion Hotel in Aberdeen is sold out on
Saturday night - I phoned to verify and it's true. The Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia
Convention has succeeded in booking all the rooms for one particular evening.
The other evenings are sure to follow. For reference, anyone wanting to book
a room and cannot, the list of motels and phone numbers within sight distance
of the Clarion (where the convention is held) are reprinted below. If you
have been meaning to book a room, grab it now. Pre-paid attendance is more
than we've ever had - broke a record!
Red Roof Inn (next door to the hotel) 410-273-7800
Super 8 Motel 410-272-5420
Days Inn 410-272-8500
Holiday Inn 410-272-8100
Quality Inn 410-272-6000

Many old-time radio related events are being held during the weekend. Patty
McCormack will be re-creating her 1956 radio debut in SUSPENSE "The Doll."
Recreation of a "lost" 1937 episode of LIGHTS OUT will be performed. (Open
to anyone who wants to play a role!)
Presentation about Edward R. Murrow in broadcasting.

Subject: Line-up [removed] corrected
In my haste to write my note, I created something that might be misinterpreted.
My question is whether or not the "line-up" dramatic device in the show could
have been legal at the time. It seems to me that it's just a dramatic device
that would have little to do with actual police practice.

Subject: Country music radio shows
Hello, Radio Fans!
Can any of you give me some sources for Grand Ole Opry and other country
music radio shows?
I would love to get some of the Prince Albert Grand Ole Opry segments
that, I think, aired on NBC as 30 minute shows. And I'm looking for
transcriptions of country music shows that aired on local radio stations,
especially in the 1940's through the 1960's. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Subject: Line-Ups!
Joe:
I'm not a lawyer, but I've been in law enforcement since 1977.
A line-up in which a suspect is part of a group of similar appearing people,
to be shown for possible witness identification, is still done today. In
smaller departments that can't get a "cast of characters" together, a photo
array is used instead of people. The Miranda warning is given prior to
asking questions (unlike TV, it's usually not rattled off as the person is
handcuffed). There are a lot of safeguards and procedures that need to be
followed to make a line-up ID valid in court, but Miranda isn't one of them.
What you hear on the radio program is what big city departments used to do.
Everyone arrested overnight would be brought in for the detective assembly
to get a look at. Their alleged crimes and method-of-operation would be read
off, in hopes that the detectives would recognize some element of any open
cases they had. The only such department that I'm familiar with, Milwaukee
PD, abandoned that years ago, but I don't know if that's the case
nationwide.
I hope that helps.

SAM SPADE ON TV
Some twenty years ago or so, Howard Duff was a guest at a meeting of the
SPERDVAC old time radio club. People from the audience asked questions.
Someone -- sorry, I can't remember who after this many years -- asked why he
had never made a Sam Spade pilot for TV. Duff said "I guess nobody ever asked
me." I ventured that I had seen a half-hour pilot, "Johnny Nighthawk" on the
GE Theatre anthology series and this seemed very much like a Sam Spade script
with an added touch that the hero was also a pilot and flew a plane in a
couple of scenes. Duff agreed that it did have a lot of similar elements to
the Sam Spade radio format.
I might add that there is an old kinescope with copies circulating among
collectors of Duff doing a comedy skit as Sam Spade on a very early Ed Wynn
TV show -- so early that dramatic radio and TV were co-existing.
