Can someone describe what a full dress suit in the 1940s/late-1930s might
look like, and how it differed from a tuxedo?

"Full Dress Suit" refers to tails, generally worn with a white vest.

Subject: Tux or tails

Chris Holmes ponders what Jack Benny is wearing what tuxedo while
Rochester is wearing Benny's "full dress suit."

Basically it's the difference between "tux and tails." Prior to
1886, a full dress suit for formal wear was an all-black (or midnight
blue) with tails. (Think Victor Borge) It could be worn with either
black tie or white tie, depending on time of day and occasion. (Think
Fred Astaire)

The tuxedo (as it would be called in the US) was called a "dinner
jacket" in Europe, when society men, led by royalty, starting wearing
jackets without tails around 1886. Although the jacket was the same
black or blue color, it could be ivory in warmer climes. (Think
Bogart in "Casablanca")

There are other small variations in this attire, including cumber-
bon, type of tie, buttons, trousers, etc. but basically that's the
difference.

Jack French
(who has both tux and tails in his closet)

"Delmar had been accused by Dayton Allen (no relation to Fred) of
taking Claghorn out of an unproduced play _It's a Gift_,
co-authored in 1943 by the plaintiff and defendant."

He was also no relation to Steve Allen, though he appeared regularly
on Steve Allen't TV show circa 1960 as a character famous for the
catch-phrase "Why Not?" Earlier, he was a regular on the Howdy
Doody Show, doing voices of Flub-a-dub and Mr. Bluster as well as
puppeteer and playing a number of live characters, including Ugly
Sam, Pierre the French Chef, Sir Archibald, and Lanky Lou. Sometime
in the 1970s he did voices for a Saturday morning TV show called
"Lancelot Link, Super Chimp," which was all about a family of
anthropomorphized chimps.

I wonder what else he did.
