Subject: Re: Early Days of OTR Catalogues

I remember the very first OTR catalogue I ever saw. It was a two or
three page list of radio programs on two-track reel-to-reel tapes. The most
extensive run it contained was four or five episodes of FIBBER McGEE AND
MOLLY.

This was from the early 1960s!

I'm trying to recall the name of the gentleman who issued the catalogue,
and was obviously one of the real founders of today's OTR.

"Don Maris." Does that sound right?

     Sincerely,

     George Wagner

Subject: Bill Paley, WHN, Jack Benny and CBS

I'm watching a video I recorded in 1989 when William S. Paley died and CBS
television broadcast a memorial hour in his honor. In the first package of
archive film clips, there's a couple featuring microphones and a chime
(Major Boiwes?)clearly marked "WHN," and a couple more of Cab Calloway and
Bing Crosby singing into microphones clearly marked "WADX." The latter clips
are obviously lifted from the 1932 movie "The Big Broadcast." But the
inclusion of the WHN clips implies that that pioneering New York station was
a CBS affiliate. I know that WOR was the affiliate there when CBS had its
first broadcast in 1927, but was WHN ever a CBS affiliate (perhaps between
WOR and WABC)?

The package also includes Jack Benny's famous "I'm thinking it over!" radio
gag, but I'm positive that was delivered on NBC rather than CBS, or did
Benny recreate that gag after moving to CBS?

Subject: City Service Band of America

Hello all: I've recently hit a gold mine--City Service Band of America
programs from 1953 to 1955. Not contiguous, but excellent sound. I'm
acquiring these from a friend in Pennsylvania who acquired them from their
original recordist. These were transferred to audio cassette in the recent
past. Other than the fact that the playback open reel machine was a bit too
slow--meaning that sometimes the station ID (wrca) is missing, they are in
truly excellent sound. One has to wonder what the open reel recordings must
have sounded like.

Is there anyone out there who might be interested in trading these for more?
Presently, I've only got six recordings with only one of the six missing a
broadcast date. More are on their way. Thanks.

Is anyone familiar with Howdy Doody on the radio? Everything I can find on the
internet is about the TV show. I have a show from 53-12-24 in which Buffalo
Bob says it is the second anniversary of the Howdy Doody radio show. They go
on to say it is Christmas Eve. One confusing note is that a search of the New
York Times radio listings shows Howdy Doody radio shows from 1948 forward.
