Here's a show I've been wondering about ever since I first heard it 56
years ago on a homemade Wilcox-Gay Recordio record. It was one of the big
name comedy/variety shows (Jack Benny Show, Bing Crosby Show, etc.) with
four or five of the big names (I'm thinking Jack Benny, George Burns and
Grocho Marx for sure, and maby Bing Crosby) singing together a slow, low
keyed, accapella version of a song containing the repeated verse: "...my
baby's simply crazy about raaaaag", as in ragtime, but they always dragged
out the word "rag" to get a laugh. It was late forties to very early fifties
(1949?). Does anyone know what show I'm talking about and what the air date
was?

Kallis <skallisjr@[removed];writes:

I had one of those deeds when they came out, but it's gone now. However,
if I still had it, would I be a bona-fide landowner of Yukon territory.

I have lots of those deeds and never intend to eat Puffed Wheat again.
However, the deeds were issued by a Holding Company that held the master deed
and
they stopped paying it's taxes decades ago. The last I heard the land for
which the deeds were issued is now a golf course. Sorry, you ain't a big time
Yukon land owner.

During the Golden Age of Radio there were many small
independent stations that tried to compete with the larger
network affiliates. Some survived, some didn't.

Thanks to Dick Bertel, host of the '70's program "The
Golden Age of Radio," originally broadcast on WTIC, in
Hartford, remnants of WGCH-FM can be heard at

late FM station, there are photos of the staff and

Rick Keating wanted to know who played Oliver Perry on the Green Hornet.
That was Rollon Parker, Rick. He was a staple on all the WXYZ programs, a
man of many voices and a fine talent. I don't know off-hand who was
"Clicker" Binney however. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.

Bob Watson writes:

the radio version actually outlasted the TV version. The only other
radio shows I can think of that did that are Suspense and, I think, Amos
and Andy. Can anyone think of any others?

Is that Godfrey I hear whistling the tune of "Seems Like Old Times"?

Hi,
Bob Watson asked for radio shows, in addition to Our Miss
Brooks, that outlasted their TV spinoffs. I believe Life with
Luigi was on the radio from 1948 until 1953 while the TV
spinoff was only shown during 1952.

I'm way out of the [removed] I wish to posit a coupla comments about
comic-book & cartoon-related OTR.

A few weeks ago, there was a thread about Paramount/Famous/Harveytoon
cartoons. I'm surprised that no one brought up a short-lived Famous cartoon
series frpm the 1940s that was actually inspired by a radio programme, viz.
"The Land of the Lost" (not be confused with the homonymous dinosaur-themed
kiddie show produced for TV in the 1970s by the Brothers Krofft). The radio
show was about a fantasy land under the sea where rested lost and misplaced
items from the surface world, and the talking fish character who helped
transport us, there was named "Red Lantern" (in the episode I once heard, "Red
Lantern" was voiced by Art Carney). The "Land of the Lost" cartoon series
lasted about 3 or 4 episodes. The only one I ever saw was part of the
Casper/Harveytoons TV package and centered on lost watches (totally
anthropomorhixised while in the "land of the lost"). "Red Lantern," the fish,
was voiced by Jackson Beck.

Tomorrow (28th) is the fourth anniversary of Jackson's passing. I was at his
funeral. I miss him.

Apropos of nothing, I just bought a sheet of the new USPS first-class stamps
depicting various superheroes in the Marbel Comics canon. I truly think
"Captain America" would've made a quite enjoyable serialised adventure series.
Cap's theme-song, devised for his 1960s (very) limited-animation cartoon
series, would have been a great theme-song on par with the "Rah-rah-rah,
hooray for the good guys" sentiments of "Jack Armstrong's' theme.

C'mon, and sing along: "When Captain America throws his mighty [removed]
those who chose to oppose his shield must [removed] he's led to a fight
and a duel is [removed] the red and the white and the blue comes
[removed] Captain America throws his mighty shield!"

Marvel killed off Steve "Captain America" Rogers in their comic books earlier
this year. I miss him.

That's about the size of it.
