Elizabeth, is this a, er, crock?!
Kroc himself was fond of telling this story, and it appears in his
autobiography. However, it doesn't hold up under investigation -- while
he did work briefly as a pianist at WEBH, the station where Correll and
Gosden got their first real break in radio, he had nothing to do with
auditioning talent. Correll and Gosden were actually hired in the spring
of 1925 by Robert Boniel, who was the WEBH station manager, and their
skill with song and patter were impressive enough to land them a
better-paying job a few months later at WGN. So while it's a cute story,
I'm afraid it's another case of a famous man embroidering the facts to
make his own legend a bit more compelling.
I do like the hamburgers, though. A fatal weakness, in fact.

Subject: Burns & Allen help
Hi gang,
I'm looking for the title/air date of an episode of Burns and Allen
with a Texas oilman who goes about bragging about the "bigger and
betterness" of Texas.
I'm pretty sure the episode culminates at a cocktail party.
thanks,
rob

I can remember seeing Benny Bell, as a VERY old man, doing the "Shaving
Cream" song, on THE UNCLE FLOYD SHOW (the subject here, periodically, of
some conversation)--
In the early 1980s!
(Almost as odd, as seeing the Coney Island strong man, of the '30s, on
THE JOE FRANKLIN SHOW, in the late '70s, or a few years [removed])
I may be thinking of a Professor Irwin Corey apprearance, but I think
the FLOYD SHOW had to bleep the song!
And, to keep this on topic--
:-)
Did the Professor, Irwin Corey, ever appear on radio?
Best, Jim Burns

Subject: Amos and Andy in "King Kong"
Having just seen the new Peter Jackson remake of "King Kong" I noticed a
Times Square billboard advertising "Amos and Andy" sponsored by Pepsodent
and I was just wondering if any of the A&A experts here can tell me if they
got this right or not? I know that Rinso detergent was the sponsor most
associated with the show on radio but perhaps since this takes place earlier
in the Depression maybe Pepsodent was in fact an earlier sponsor.
Seems like a controversial sponsor to pick (if it wasn't an actual
historical sponsor) with Amos and Andy given the stereotype of blacks having
bright white teeth in those days.
Given Jackson's obsession with detail though I suspect he wouldn't go to all
the trouble of sticking something like this in without having a point behind
it. It goes by so quickly most people wouldn't even notice it either way.
I also enjoyed the little inside joke of the movie producer trying to get
"Fay" to do his little safari picture but she's already doing a film for
"Cooper over at RKO" (Fay, of course, referring to Fay Wray from the
original "King Kong" directed by Cooper at RKO).

Subject: Re: FOTR Convention DVDs and Tapes
I just finished editing the FOTR Convention DVDs. Orders started
shipping on Saturday and the balance will go out Monday and Tuesday.
If anyone has not ordered and is interested in DVD from this past
years convention or from any of the conventions since 2002, you can
find an order form on our web site.
[removed]
On the main home page near the top, you will find a link to the order
forms. There is also an order form for the Anniversary DVD.
Our regular production business has just been very busy since October
and it has taken me a little longer to get them finished than I
planned. But now that the master are made, I can get orders out in a
day from the time they are received.
For those of you that already order and were wondering where the DVDs
were, I apologize for the delay, but everyone should get their order
by the end of this week unless the mails slow things down.
