Subject: The Lone Ranger
I'm going to bet a number of people will chime in about the Butch Cavendish
story, and how Fran Striker repeatedly revised the origin over the years, and
yes, Cavendish was not part of the series yet in 1938, so I'll leave that for
the others. But regarding the plot summary of Tonto and the gold mine, while
there was at least twelve episodes that involved a gold mine in 1938, none
fit the (partial) description Alan Bell asked about. The closest plot summary
that matches the story he described comes from June 6, 1941. In that one,
Tonto uses his "Danger Whistle" (obviously a giveaway premium during the
commercial breaks) to alert The Lone Ranger just before he is about to be
shot.

December 7th births
12-07-1905 - Leonard Goldenson - Scottsdale, PA - d. 12-27-1999
owner of the ABC network
Goldenson was not the "owner" of ABC. ABC, as the Blue Network, was
purchased by Edward J. Noble. As the network continued to struggle,
Noble entered into an arrangement to sell the network to United
Paramount Theaters, which was headed by Goldenson. Goldenson then also
became the CEO of ABC, after the merger took effect in 1953, and the
corporate name was changed to "American Broadcasting - Paramount
Theaters, Inc." He started as an attorney at Paramount Pictures, rose
in the company to handle the reorganization that resulted from the
government's forced separation of United Paramount Theaters from
Paramount Pictures, and eventually became head of [removed] As CEO,
Goldenson no doubt held stock in the company, but I wouldn't call him
the "owner."

TLR and Tonto had not yet met. Tonto was almost buried in a mine explosion
(I think, I got into it a bit late) and one of the partners in the mine was
about to shoot him
when TLR came along and saved him.
Others will have to answer when the Cavendish Gang origin story first
appeared, but I do remember from all the versions of that story that I
have heard that when the LR came to after Tonto had moved him to a cave
and ministered to his wounds, he thought Tonto looked familiar, and
Tonto explained that when the LR was only a boy, he had found an Indian
boy in trouble and saved his life. The LR then remembers Tonto by name.
This doesn't sound consistent with the mine explosion story, since in
the later version, the LR and Tonto had met previously, but he wasn't
yet the LR at the time. So obviously what comic book fans call "retcon"
-- retroactive continuity -- has been around for a long time.

Subject: Alan Bell's Lone Ranger question
Alan Bell asks a question concerning an episode of The Lone Ranger from 1938
in which the Ranger apparently doesn't know Tonto. The explanation is this.
The program in question must be "Origin of Tonto" from December 7, 1938
which recaps the history of the two characters up to that time. Alan is
correct in saying that in 1938, there was not yet a Cavendish gang. By the
time the transcriptions began, in January, 1938, the Lone Ranger had been on
the air five years. Alan is also correct that Tonto joined the Ranger
sometime shortly after the program debuted, for the stated purpose of giving
the Ranger someone to talk to and carrying the story so that it was more
believable. The episode he refers to was aired in order to flesh in the
background of Tonto, and it was followed by an episode that explained the
origin of Silver.
About this time, George W. Trendle licensed Republic Pictures to make a
movie serial of the Lone Ranger. For this serial, a slightly different back
story was developed, in which a small group of Texas Rangers were ambushed
in a canyon. The character of Cavendish was not introduced at this time
however. The first telling of the origin story that most Ranger fans are
familiar with occurred in December, 1942 when the Ranger found his young
nephew Dan Reid living with an elderly widow in Montana. Fran Striker was
undoubtedly influenced by the Republic serial, but the back story was
changed in order to give the Ranger a fourteen year old nephew, presumably
to engage more interest on the part of the younger audience.
So to summarize, there was no Cavendish gang in 1938. From 1942 forward, it
was Cavendish and his gang who ambushed the Ranger and his brother and other
Rangers in Bryant's Gap. The story was retold in the twentieth anniversary
program on January 30, 1953, "The Return of Cavendish". Therefore, there
are three back stories, depending on the context of the question.

1937 The FCC scolded the radio network for a skit that starred Mae West. The
satirical routine was based on the biblical tale of Adam and Eve and,
well, it got a bit out of hand. So, following its scolding by the FCC,
NBC banned Miss West from its airwaves for 15 years.
All of which was a tempest in a teapot. I have a recording of the skit,
and it's pretty tame by today's standards. In any event, Mae West was
just the scapegoat for the whole thing. Mae West had played essentially
the same character in multiple films. She didn't write the skit, and
whoever did, and engaged her to appear in it, knew and intended exactly
what they got. All she did was read the script and give them the
character they were expecting. But everyone else responsible for the
skit were men. When things hit the fan, it was easiest to blame the woman.
