I have enjoyed the discussion on Fred [removed] [removed] Treadmill

who get Game Show Network: Fred was the Mystery Guest on August 16,

The 50s TV series was every much the fine program that the radio series
was. In contrast the 60s version was more campy.
And it's in the 60s version that Jack Webb gets preachy about political issues.

I think the saddest part of Allen's history on radio is that the medium
eventually forced him to become, in many ways, that which he hated most.
It occurs to me that nobody ever forced Jack Benny to do a format other than
what he liked
to do. And it strikes me that this is because Benny's numbers were always
high, and Benny
could and did take his show to another network when he was dissatisfied. I
don't know Fred
Allen's numbers, but I'm under the impression that they were never as high as
Benny's. He
could always, at any point, have sought other ad agencies or other networks
who would let
him do what he wanted, or he could have quit radio altogether. But if his
numbers were as
good as Benny's, he could have done whatever format he wanted.

Ted Key used to do a regular cartoon in the Saturday Evening Post called "Hazel" about a
woman of that name who was housekeeper to a family. In one of them, she is shown, in a
Christmas-decorated livingroom, talking to the child. The caption has her saying, "...And
then Tiny Tim says to Lionel Barrymore ..."

Subject: Frank Lovejoy
Regarding Frank Lovejoy,
A dear "thank you" to Jim Widner for the mention of Frank's brief term as a
staff actor at WLW in Cincinnati.
As Frank, himself, told it in a 1950's interview, he had just completed a
stint in the Broadway production of "Chalked Out" when he joined a touring
production of the play "Pursuit of Happiness" ca. 1935. The production lost
money and folded in Cincinnati. Out of work, stuck in Cincinnati and more
than a little hungry, Frank applied for and landed a job as part of the
dramatic staff of WLW, where he learned the craft of "radio" acting under
legendary director Rikel Kent. Kent was innovative in that he had his actors
perform a variety of roles and, in later years, Lovejoy always seemed
complimentary about his year-long stay at the station. The only confirmed
recorded appearance of Frank at WLW is the program Mr. Widner mentioned;
WLW's production of "A Christmas Carol" from December 24th, 1935. It is
possible Frank might appear on another recording but it is difficult to
tell--the Christmas Carol was one of the few occasions where actor credits
were given. Frank plays Scrooge's nephew, Fred, and only has a handful of
lines as WLW's entire production lasted only a half hour. But his
distinctive New York accent brought a certain warmth to merry olde London.
The one photograph we have of Lovejoy came much later, in the 1950's, when he
attended a WLW reunion and sat down for a chat with talk show pioneer Ruth
Lyons.

And it seems that a label like Caedmon has/had a version by some famous
actor like Charlton Heston, or was it Alexander Scourby, or ?
My old Caedmon catalog lists a version with Ralph Richardson as Scrooge.
I prefer Alastair Sim, but it may be due to the fact that I met both
in London in 1975, backstage after plays, and Sim was far more
personable and friendly. Richardson was as stingy with time as
Scrooge was with money--he brushed off the small group of fans
outside the theater, hurriedly climbing on a motorcycle and speeding
off, while his co-star on this occasion, a guy named John Gielgud,
stood around and amiably shook every last hand and signed every last
autograph.
Reginald Owen once sent me a Christmas card signed "Scrooge"--but he
was also quite friendly.

Subject: Open reel players
Greetings,
I recently acquired a TEAC 1230 reel player and am
interested in obtaining a copy of the Owner's Manual
and/or Service Manual for it. I would be happy to pay
for a reasonable facsimile.
I am also interested in obtaining another working open
reel player at reasonable cost if someone has one
available.
Please send private email to my address above if you
can help.
Thanks,
Mark

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I received an early Christmas present from my wife, a copy of the "Great
American Broadcast: A Celebration of Radio's Golden Age" by Leonard Maltin.
Does anyone have the CD (or can tell me what shows were selected for it)
that could be sent away for with the book. I understand that Leonard credits
Radio Spirits with producing the CD. I was just curious what went along with
the book.

The best radio version I've ever heard of Christmas Carol was a two hour
show I heard on the radio about ten years ago. This show was actually
sponsored by James Dobson's Focus on the Family. Now, I'm no fan of Dobson
and I've never heard any of their other radio productions, but their version
of the Christmas Carol was excellent. If I remember correctly, they did
hire a company very experienced with MOTR (Modern Old Time Radio) to produce
the show.
