"This Week in Radio History for June 28, 1951, mention's Bill Stern's
"illustrious sportscasting career." Illustrious? A 2017 article in the
Philadelphia Inquirer quotes Radio Recall's Jack French as saying, "There was
no limit to Stern's audacity in creating ... phony stories." One dramatic
example places baseball's Abner Doubleday at Lincoln's bedside after the
president was assassinated. "`Keep baseball alive," the expiring leader
whispered. `In the trying days ahead the country will need it.' Lincoln then
lowered his head into the bloody pillow and died."
There were many more stories of this ilk. But as Stern was quoted as saying,
he was "laughing all the way to the bank."

Subject: any recordings of Los Angeles disc jockey Al
Jarvis?
I was wondering if there's a way to find out if any airchecks or recordings taken off the
air, exist of West Coast pioneer disc jockey/music host Al Jarvis during the 1930s to
1950s? He started the original Make Believe Ballroom in Los Angeles between
1932 and 1934, and then took the programs to KFWB in Hollywood?? He weent back and forth
hosting the show later on KMTR, back to KFWB, then KLAC, KECA and back to
KFWB between 1953 and 1962.
Who would I contact to seach for any recordings of Al Jarvis broadcasts? SPERDVAC,
or other groups that have OTR recordings in their archives?
Any help or suggestions would be apreciated.
Thank you

For most of us, confined in our houses, there is nothing new in radio drama we
can listen to, but all that is about to change. Obviously with masks and
social distancing, radio actors are not returning to their studio microphones
to entertain us. But the Academy for Classical Acting has found a way around
that difficulty.
In cooperation with the Shakespeare Theatre and George Washington University,
they selected three classical plays, cast the shows, and then had their actors
separately record all their lines in their respective homes. Later those
recordings went to the director and all the dialogue was blended together into
a dramatic play with a sound engineer laying down all necessary musical
bridges and sound effects: footsteps, clinking glasses, strong winds, clashing
swords, etcb&.everything thing called for in the script.
The resultant recorded product will then streamed over their web site:
<[removed]
<[removed];> Admission to all below three
classical plays is free. Dates for these plays, all of which begin at 7:30 pm
EDT, are as follows.
Wednesday July 15th: Shakespearebs bHamletb
Thursday July 16th: Shakespearebs bRomeo & Julietb
Friday July 17th: Shaw's "Man and Superman" (SPOILER ALERT: This is not
the Superman of radio and the comic books)
If conflicts prevent you from enjoying the above live-streaming, all
productions will be then archived and made available as podcasts at the same
web site.
