Subject: The Doolittle Raid In Context

Larry Moore, speaking of the Doolittle Raid, notes,

And to think that more than 400,000 people died because
of a PR stunt is most disturbing.

The Doolittle Raid was more than just a PR stunt, though it was a morale
booster. The Doolittle Raid caused the Japanese military to alter its
defenses to protect their homeland from what they thought was a new
aircraft. This altered some of the Japanese military deployments in the
Pacific Theater, which, given that the Allies were concentrating more on
the Atlantic threat, took some pressure off the Allies.

Regrettably, the Chinese were misused by the Japanses during World War
II, as exemplified by the Rape of Nanking.

Undoubted the raid got a lot of play on the radio and certainly
in the film "30 Seconds Over Tokyo." , a film I have a vague
memory of when it came out.

And, as mentioned, at least as a Spike Jones musica;l piece.

But but a more complete telling of the story shows the
horrors and unintended consequences of actions of war.

Every war action has unintended consequences, sometimes trivial,
occasionally tragic. The German air raids on England initially began to
hit military and industrial targets, but a navigation error caused some
aircraft to drop their bombs on the east and northeast parts of London,
initiating the bombing -- on both sides -- of civilian targets. The
London air raids were broadcast to the United States by Edward R. Murrow
at the time, an important and historic point in OTR.

There are 4 clips from Fibber McGee and Molly that were featured on the show
Monitor dealing with Luther Burbank's birthday and Girl Scout Week. These were
apparently broadcast on the same date, but it is not clear to me which date.
Here are 3 possibilities: 1) 59-05-09 The date on my mp3 files ; 2) 59-04-05
The date at [removed] ; 3) 59-03-07 based on internal references to Luther
Burbank's birthday, reference to holidays in February, but no holidays now;
reference to Girl Scout Week being next week.

Anyone have any insights on this?

Subject: HGWT

Someone asked:

HGWT I have been enjoying the OTR series Have Gun Will Travel. The banter
between Paladin and Heyboy (or Miss Wong) at the beginning of each episode
can bequite funny. I was just a child when HGWT was on the TV and barely
remember it and I remember nothing about the radio version. A little
research on the internet shows that there was 225 TV episodes and 104 (?)
radio episodes. Will someone tell me if the radio drama was just a repeat of
the TV show with minor script changes or were the story lines totally
different?

The director of radio's GUNSMOKE was upset because the CBS Television Network
would not allow him to be involved with the television series, or use the
radio cast for the roles. To calm him down, they allowed him to do the radio
version of the already successful HGWT. It was his intention to out-do the
television program and prove to them that whatever they could do, he could do
better. The earliest 30 or so scripts were adaptations of the teleplays,
which were supplied to him. John Dehner recalled years later how that was a
disaster. Sound men working on the program began writing original scripts, as
well as Frank Paris and others and the radio program moved up a notch in
terms of script quality.

The radio versions of the TV series are not as good. In "The Hanging Cross,"
for example, the end of the TV episode has Paladin knocking down part of the
gallows and as he is about to ride off, notices the moonlight casting a
shadow of the gallows, forming a cross in the dirt. They couldn't do that on
the radio version.

Subject: Very Horrible Radio

I just finished listening to the February 11, 1937 broadcast for the American
Red Cross. it was broadcast for two and a half hours over all the major
networks. It was to benefit and aid the victims of the recent Ohio and
Missippi valleys. What I expected to hear was a bunch of celebrities asking
for financial relief and spending time out of their busy schedules to give
some name status for the radio listeners.

Instead, what I heard was George Jessel giving a story about him attending a
Roumanian dinner that would have made the censors ring a few bells. Roxy and
the Rockettes perform on stage from the Radio City Music Hall where the
broadcast originates and all you hear is the music. Reginald Gardiner
provides a few imitations including the Hidenberg disaster (gasp!), Helen
Hayes cannot read the words on her script, Graham McNamee introduces Dudley
Diggs who doesn't even come out on stage and then introduced Olga Baclanova
and McNamee cannot even name the song she is going to perform so he adlibs
poorly. Bob Hope almost chokes on the air when singing, James Barton misses
his cues, Burgess Meredith shows us why he stayed an actor and not a singer
and then Imogene Coca is introduced to the studio audience as doing a
professional striptease act -- and again, only music is heard.

Normally I laugh at this kind of crap-ola and it's stuff like this that makes
the unusual and rare enjoyable. But this was sad . . . very sad.
