Hi Gang:
As the newly anointed "Mayor of Etherville," I'm happy to report that our old
pal Jack French had quite a good reason not to be present at the 20th annual
Cincinnati Old Time Radio & Nostalgia Convention. Y'see, as last year's winner
of the Agatha Award for non-fiction, he needed to be in Maryland for the
"Malice Domestic" convention for the mystery literature industry, being held
the same weekend as Cincinnati, in his official function as the presenter of
this year's Agatha Award for Non-Fiction.
When I got back from my convention-centred vacation to Talking Books, I had
seen that in my absence somebody else had taken over my task of producing the
audio version of the bi-monthly magazine "Talking Books Topics," which is
essentially a catalogue of recent Talking Book titles. On page 3 of the latest
TBT issue (May-June 2006; Volume 72, Number 3) in the "Books for Adults,
Cassettes--Non-Fiction" section appears this entry;
Private Eyelashes: Radio's Lady Detectives RC 58854
by Jack French
read by Nicola Daval
2 cassettes
History of well-known female crime solvers such as Nora Charles, Pam North,
Della Street, and Patsy Bowen, who made appearances on old-time radio
detective and mystery programs. Provides an overview of their shows and
chronicles their development in films, pulp fiction, and comic books. 2004.
RC 58854 Private Eyelashes: Radio's Lady Detectives
For the uninitiated, "RC 58854" is a catalogue number with the "RC" standing
for "recorded cassette." Since each cassette contains up to four 88-minute
tracks each, "2 cassettes" means that the recording contains from 5 to 8
sides. (I don't know exactly: said book was not recorded here at American
Foundation for the Blind here in NYC). With this information firmly
disseminated on this forum, I expect there to be a "run" on audio copies of
"Private Eyelashes" by Digest subscribers who are eligible to receive Talking
Books from co-operating libraries. Congratulations to Jack French, narratrix
Nicola Daval, and publisher Ben Ohmart over at BearManor Media publications.
Also, in interest of full disclosure, my name appears in the acknowledgments
to Jack's outstanding book (even though I was unable to find what he needed
from "Billy Rose").. This was particularly pleasing to me because after all
these years working in the production end of Talking Books, which never give
production credits on the finished recording anyway, I finally, by default,
got my name into a recorded book production.
"these books are made for talkin'!"
(Hon.) Derek Tague
Mayor, Etherville

Subject: Cincinnati OTR Convention
I got back to Colorado at about 1:30 PM today after a 1200 mile drive.
Sunday was hot (temperatures in the mid-80's) and muggy; with severe
thunderstorms and tornado warnings at dusk in the Salina, KS area where I
spent the night. Watched a couple of large funnel clouds that nearly
reached the ground: when funnel clouds each the ground they become
Tornadoes. Today the weather was quite a bit different; temperatures in the
mid 30's to high 20's with snow in the Denver metropolitan area.
This was the first year I made it to the Cincinnati OTR Convention. I
had a great time! Many thanks to Bob Burchett and Robert Newman and all of
the volunteers who made the Convention a most enjoyable experience.
The format of the Cincinnati Convention allows plenty of time to mix and
mingle. On Friday night a dinner for one rapidly became a get together of
eight Convention Attendees. I finally got to meet many people with whom I
have corresponded via e-mail and had not previously met: Susan and David
Siegel, Terry Salomonson, Archie H., Jim B., Ryan E., Roger H., Doug H.,
Woody, Geezer, and others. I also got to see many friends from other OTR
Convention including Charlie Summers (who was brought by his lovely wife and
daughter), Hal and Dorothy Stone, Derek T., Ted B., Ken P, Jim W., Joy J.,
and many others.
At the end of the Convention, Bob Burchett announced that there will be
at least one more Cincinnati OTR Convention. I highly recommend that you
consider attending next year's Cincinnati OTR Convention: you'll have a
Great Time!
Signing off for now,
Stewart Wright

Andrew Steinberg wrote:
Does anyone know for what years this show ran as Victory Parade of Spotlight
Bands, and what years it was known as Spotlight Bands?
Sorry I'm tardy on responding to this information request as I have been
away at the Cincy convention. As usual had a great time talking with old
friends!
"The Victory Parade of Spotlight Bands" was an offshoot of the original
program known as "Coca Cola Spotlight Bands" which premiered in November
1941. That version of the show lasted until May 1942 when it left the air.
The show was revived on September 21, 1942 as "The Victory Parade of
Spotlight Bands". Like its predecessor, it featured big name big bands six
nights a week, but the new wrinkle was that instead of originating from
nightclubs or radio studios, it originated from Army and Navy camps, bases,
etc. as well as from sites with war worker presence such as Goodyear Tire
and the Reynolds Aluminum.
After the war ended the show moved to three nights a week, and finally
went back to being called "Coca Cola Spotlight Bands" in April 1946.
This 1946 version featured three rotating bands each with its own night of
the week, Guy Lombardo (Monday), Xavier Cugat(Wednesday) and Harry James
(Friday). The show left the air forever in November 1946 just over five
years after its beginning.

I can't say enough good things about the Cincy convention this year. There's
something so warm and friendly about this event, that I always leave feeling
rejuvenated with an increased love for OTR. I guess that just shows that the
event is doing what it's supposed to do. Seeing old friends is always nice,
and it's especially fun to meet new folks, like Karen from Radio Spirits, who
is doing a fine job as an ambassador for her employer and Tom Monroe, whom
I've seen for years and have never spent much time talking to.
The highlight though, is always the Saturday dinner, and the
reasons have nothing to do with the hotel food. You see, after a couple of
grade-A recreations, there are several awards given, in honor of Dave Warren,
Parley Baer, Ezra Stone and Willard Waterman. Watching your colleagues and
peers accepting these awards, often tearfully expressing their love for radio
drama makes you realize just what a great community this is, and how
important radio is. Tom Monroe made a particularly poignant speech about
"giving back" to our hobby by giving others the opportunity to embrace it as
we have. It's a critical thing to do if our hobby is to outlive us, and it's
a goal that I have set for myself. It's this sort of thing that forces us to
put aside whatever differences we may have, and to realize that we've got to
pull together if we want this hobby to continue. That one weekend in Ohio
always puts things in perspective for me.
Please, join us April 20-21, 2007 for the 21st event. If the
idea of a cozy weekend spent with friends old and new discussing all things
nostalgia appeals to you, this is without a doubt the place for you to be.
It's uncomplicated, unpretentious, and generally a whole lot of fun!
Besides, if we keep coming, Bob has to keep holding them!

I know I'm a little late to this thread, but I just remembered:
Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee were an OTR couple. Although, the only thing that I
can find that they appeared together is the April 10, 1966 episode of The
Eternal Light called "Let There Be Light." Does anyone know of any other
radio appearances that they made together?
On a different note, it was great to meet some of you in Cincinnati!

Dear Folks-
Just wanted to second Dan Hughes' sentiments about Jim.
I, too, was a kid who repeatedly took THE GREAT RADIO HEROES out of the
(Defiance)Public Library (along with such other seminal Pop-Culture classics
as
Don Glut's THE FRANKENSTEIN LEGEND.)
At NYU, I enjoyed Jim's articles in Monster Mags; and, like Dan, his
familiar orange J-carded cassettes were some of the first ones in my
collection
(along with a few of Fred Berney's.)
It was a great pleasure to meet Jim at FOTR a few years back. Since, he has
expressed kind words about my own Radio Drama work (which mean a great deal,
from such a source,) as well as honored me with the chance to work with him
as a book editor (though that gig is kinda in The Phantom Zone, right [removed])
He's one of the real Founding Fathers of our little kingdom; in fact, he's a
Prince of a guy!
All the best,
-Craig W.
