Subject: Lone Ranger and Tonto
This is for Lone Ranger scholars. I was listening to AM1700 on the Internet
last night and heard an episode of TLR from 1938. In it, TLR and Tonto had
not yet met. Tonto was almost buried in a mine explosion (I think, I got into
it a bit late) and one of the partners in the mine was about to shoot him
when TLR came along and saved him.
I understand from an NPR story from maybe 15 years ago, that TLR began with
our hero alone with Tonto arriving on the scene 11 episodes later just to
give him someone to talk to. The back story of the Cavendish gang with Tonto
saving him was cooked up later. How much later? Apparently later than 1938
because this is a completely different back story.
So are we to believe that by 1938, there still is no Cavendish gang? If not,
why is the Lone Ranger out there in the first place? How many different
origin stories are there?
Alan

Subject: Couple of Jack Benny Oddities
I recently listened to several Jack Benny holiday programs, two of which had
an unusual feature. One was the 12/28/41 pre-New Year's show wherein Mary
Livingstone sang a duet with Phil Harris. Anyone know if there are other
instances of Mary singing on the show? It seemed to me she began rather
timidly, but quickly found herself. Not a bad voice at all.
The second is from 12/15/46. Mary is apparently under the weather and
substituting for her is her sister, Babe. But, was that actually Babe, or
an actress portraying her? The end of the episode had been truncated from
the recording I have so I don't know if there were cast credits given.
