The National Fire Protection Association, Quincy, MA. is probably the best
source for the fire. They have been investigating fires for 100 years and
have published much material on the Cocoanut Grove fire. There is a web site
NPFA.

Greetings, Gate! Let's communicate!
I have recently became very interested in both the BBC and the CBC(Canadian
Broadcasting Corp.(?)). Seeing that I always want to devour books on subjects
that I am intrigued by, I was wondering if anyone knew of any such books out
there in radio fandom concerning the BBC/ CBC. I am especially drawn to the
mystery shows and soap operas produced on those networks. Any help, folks?

I also wanted to share with OTR fans that AC Comics, who specialize in
inexpensive reprints of classic, almost forgotten comic books from the
30s-60s, have a number of OTR related titles. I have recently purchased titles
like THE GREEN LLAMA, SPY SMASHER(was there a SPY SMAHER radio show?), and
others. The books are printed in b/w collections of a variety of stories. A
fantastic resource for scripting OTR re-creations! Follow this link if you are
interested: [removed]

Thanks for the help I know I will receive from the wonderful fans on this
digest.

Yours truly,
Randy Story
(who is looking forward to meeting a lot of you at the FOTR in several weeks)

Subject: Jack Benny opera

This New York Times article on performance artist John Moran references an
early work that utilized airchecks from Jack Benny programs as part of the
[removed] pretty weird - is anyone familiar with this guy?

Yes, I've been pursuing this piece and composer for some years now. I've
contacted the company that originally performed the piece on a few
occasions, but never any response. I've also followed up on some dead-end
leads of where there's a video copy of one of the original performances. I
have articles about the piece (one of which was quoted), but this "opera" is
pretty elusive.

Alan Bell commented:

Actually, I just answered my own question about the
origin of the phrase, "the life of Riley

I seem to recall that perhaps I've posted this information previously to
the Digest before re the phrase "The Life of Riley." and about how the radio
program of the same name's star, William Bendix used it in his little brief
exchange with the audience after being introduced by announcer Ken Niles
during the show's audience warmup Bendix said his understanding of the
origin of the phrase came about due to a line in a poem that went as such"

  "Here lies McGurk, the iceman,
  They buried him today.
He lived the life of Riley,
  While Riley was away."

He always got a laugh upon reciting that poem. Then
we'd go on with the show!
