seems they worked on most all the radio programs emanating from
the Detroit area such as The Lone Ranger, Sergeant Preston Of The
Yukon, etc. as their voices were easy to recognize.

"The Mummers" was simply a nom-de-air for the dramatic stock company at
WJR Detroit, organized from local talent in the early 1930's by the
station's chief announcer, Charles Penman, and which appeared on all of
that station's locally-produced dramatic features, including "The News
Comes To Life," "Isn't It A Racket," and the station's flagship dramatic
series "The Little Theatre of the Air," along with "The Hermit's Cave."

James Jewell of WXYZ was following WJR's example as well as punning on
his own name when he named his own dramatic stock company "The Jewel
Players." Given the finite number of qualified radio actors available in
any city that wasn't New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles during the
thirties, it's quite likely there was extensive cross pollenation between
the two groups.

Subject: Two Gun Pete

I received an inquiry from Cindy Toles <JCToles@[removed]; whose father,
as a young boy in the 40s, loved the radio show, "Two Gun Pete" (which
may have been "Two Pistol Pete") which he listened to in his home in
Arkansas. She'd like to find out more information about the show, and
locate an audio copy, if possible.

This show does not appear in Jay Hickerson's "Ultimate Guide" so it
cannot be a network show. More probably, it was a syndicated show,
under one of these two titles. And like all syndicated shows, the odds
are pretty good that some may have survived, unlike most network shows.

Does this show ring a bell with any Digesters?

Subject: Home component for mp3

Take a look at the Sony 400 DVD changer. The new version plays not onle
DVD's, but CD's and CD's with mp3 on it. I use it primarily for my music
mp3 cd's, but I reserve two sections, one for DVD's and one for OTR mp3
cd's. You can choose individual tracks with the included remote. I keep
notebooks with all the track listings for my mp3's so I can listen to
what I want, when I want. Believe me, you can put a lot of OTR on one of
these babies. I had a version before that only played cd's. I gave that
to me daughter.

Subject: Walgreen's CDs

I read here the other day about OTR shows now available on
CDs at Walgreen's for a dollar. I was skeptical and decided
to check it out. To my pleasant surprise I found duplicate
copies of 11 different series in an eclectic mix of crime,
drama and comedy pairings (two shows of a single series per
CD, $1). For somebody starting a collection or seeking
added favorites it could be an inexpensive source of rapid
program-building at 50 cents a show. Among those on our
local shelves were Fred Allen, Dimension X, The Adventures
of Michael Shayne, Casey Crime Photographer, Fibber McGee &
Molly, The Aldrich Family, Ozzie and Harriet, Amos 'n' Andy,
The Great Gildersleeve and Father Knows Best. There were
also DVDs for a dollar, one of which was Ozzie and Harriet.
Nice find. Pleasant surprise. Thanks to whoever informed
us about this. Have no idea if it will persist -- there
wasn't a cut-off date listed but it seems like too good a
deal to last forever.

Jim Widner posted a fine analysis in #212 re broadcast
date clues on the recording of the Bob Hope show under
discussion. May I add something:

In Keith's query about the broadcast date he
mentioned:
he also makes references to "the Lost
Weekend" and [removed] Fields

"The Lost Weekend" was a popular movie released in
late 1945 and would've still been much talked about in
March 1946, especially since it received several
Oscars -- including Best Picture -- at the Oscar
awards on March 7th. And [removed] Fields was still alive
in March 1946 -- and died that December.

Hi all,

A customer has asked me for suggestions for online OTR character fan clubs.
I'm not sure exactly what series or genre he's interested in, but if any of
you have any urls that you would recommend, I will pass them on to him.
