Folks;
I know I'm late getting the FOTR Con photos on the "real" pages (with
[removed] received a whole LOT of comments about my not having the
time to label the pics!), but I'm gettin' there. Spent some time yesterday
afternoon sitting in the backyard in 75-degree weather and gorgeous sunshine
readying more photos - as soon as I get some other folks to check my
descriptions (wouldn't want to mislable anyone!), I'll get the photos live.
The SPERDVAC convention is this [removed] all of those going, please take
me with you in spirit, and have a blast!
I was not successful getting any dealers to handle the fundraiser disc at
SPERDVAC, but I _did_ get an orderform on the web for those of you interested
in donating to the new server/bandwidth fund - it's been attached to the page
at:
[removed]
...and I've placed both a PayPal button and a print order form for those
who prefer snail-mail.
[removed] 401 already. I'm impressed.

Hi Gang!
Indulge me as I posit a few queries.
Barbara Sunday Watkins wrote about the recent announcement that KNX/Los
Angeles was cancelling their "Drama Hour":
"What's next? Is KNX going to discontinue the Business/Technology hour? Tom
Hatten? Sam Rubin? Charles Osgood? Dave Ross? Stardate? The Wall Street
Journal?
I can't imagine why such a popular feature as the Drama Hour was singled
out.
Is the "Tom Hatten" mentioned the same gentleman who hosted a TV kids' show
out of [removed] in the late 1950s and who later turned up a TV character actor?
The only thing I remember him from are various episodes of "Gomer Pyle, USMC"
where he usually played some commissioned officer or another.
Speaking of PFC Pyle, is the Eddie Carroll who presently does a brilliant
impersonation of Jack Benny the same "Eddie Carroll" who often turned up on
"GP-USMC" as the wise-cracking corporal and sidekick to Allan Melvin's
mess-sergeant character "Charlie Hacker"?
T'other day, I stumbled upon an interesting film title in "Leonard Maltin's
2004 Movie & Video Guide>" A 1956 release with the now offensive title
"Wetbacks" stars Lloyd Bridges and Barton McLane in a story about how Lloyd
Bridges' character is forced to co-operate in a scheme to smuggle Mexican
peasants into the [removed] Maltin's synopsis concludes with " 'Great
Gildesleeve' Hal Peary plays a knife-wielding Mexican heavy!" So has anybody
out there ever seen this cultural footnote to embellish upon Prof. Maltin's
and offer up a critique of Mr. Peary's performance?
I also noticed that this film [I really don't want to repeat the title] was
directed by Hank McCune. The only thing I know about him was that he was the
star of the first sitcom to ARGUABLY employ canned-laughter. Who the heck was
he and what else did he do? Any OTR connections?
Hoping there are answers in the ether,
Derek Tague

From Those Were The Days -
1934 - The first broadcast of The Gumps was heard on CBS. Wilmer Walter
played Andy Gump, Agnes Moorehead was Gump's wife, Min, and Jackie Kelk
was son, Chester. Karo syrup and Pebico toothpaste/tooth powder sponsored.
1950 - "The greatest stars of our time on one big program" was the
introduction by actress Tallulah Bankhead, who opened the 90-minute Big
Show on NBC. It was a big show all right. The peacock saw red as losses
exceeded a million dollars in the three years the program was on the air.

List Member, Sheryll Smith can give you many more specifics with her
complete B&R inventory of programming.
1) Sheryll could you please contact me directly regarding your log?
2) Does someone have her e-mail address so I can contact her directly.
Although I received a few informative responses, pre-1948 scheduling is
still a bit foggy (when were Saturday programs added? When in 1946 did
their program begin?).

Subject: OT: Looking for a book
This is off-topic, but I don't quite know where else to go to find this info,
so I'll ask you fine people.
I'm looking for a book that details the history of various B-detective movie
series from the 30's and 40's, like Charlie Chan, The Falcon, The Saint etc.
Is there such a thing?
rodney.

Around 15-20 years ago my Dad bought a few cassettes of the Greatest Story
Ever Told which consisted of "No Room at the Inn" and a few stories leading
up to the birth of Jesus Christ on this series. I never seen any more than
these 4-8 shows. Have any more of this series turned up anywhere?

Does anyone know of a product that LOOKS like and old radio but plays
CDs and other recorded formats -- INCLUDING Mp3s?
I've seen ads for the Philco All-in-One, which would fit the bill except
that it can't handle MP3s. I'm a listener more than a collector, happy enough
with the MP3s I can find on the net and ebay.
I'd love to be able to listen to these old shows while I "look" at the
old radio they're coming from. Adolescent, maybe, but I like to get entirely
into the mood!
I suppose I could get an old console and gut it.
