Subject: Jay Hickerson Update
Folks;
Received a note from Jay Hickerson's wife Karen; Jay has had a bit of
a setback, was in hospital in mid-September, and is now back at the
rehab facility. He is improving, but because of this terrible pandemic
she can't visit, only talk to him on the telephone.
She also mentioned the Friends of Old-Time Radio Non-Profit
Corporation has been dissolved. This struck me as surprisingly [removed]
course we knew the conventions were a thing of the past. But even after
all this time, every year when the air gets crisp in late September, I
get [removed] the October convention. And then I
get a little sad realizing it isn't to be. I met a whole lot of friends
at that convention, too many to name, many of them on this very list,
and some unfortunately no longer with us; many many radio luminaries
like Norman Corwin and Carlton E. Morse (almost ran the poor guy down
once!) along with television stars like Michael C. Gwynne and Bob
Hastings (who both are/were star and friend), and of course Arthur
Anderson, who put me literally one degree of separation away from Orson
Welles, once signed a cereal box for my wife, and directed my daughter
Kate in a Let's Pretend recreation there. (She likes to remind me she
performed in two recreations at that convention where I only performed
in one. [removed])
For ALL of those memories, and so many many more, I owe Jay. Good
thoughts, email messages, cards, etc. would be, I think, appropriate.
And I know this was posted on the Digest before, but a GoFundMe page to
help with Jay's mounting medical expenses is at:

1939 Kate Hopkins, Angel of Mercy was heard for the first time on CBS
radio. Tom Hopkins, Kate's husband, was played by Clayton 'Bud' Collyer,
later of eventual Superman fame. The 15 minute radio drama was written
by Chester McCraken and Gertrude Berg.
In certain circles and at certain times, Bud Collyer was better known as
a host of TV game shows, such as "Beat the Clock:" and "To Tell the Truth."
And Gertrude Berg eventually was well-known for "The Goldbergs," one of
the earliest radio sitcoms, with a later television version, which
Gertrude Berg created, produced, wrote, directed, and starred in as the
family matriarch, Molly Goldberg.
