Keith Houdeshell asks;
"How many in the digest remember them (Sen-sen)?"
I remember them well, small liquorice flavored candy that came in a little
envelope-they tasted terrible. Their taste was a little like soap. I always
thought the name should have been sin-sin because the bad boys used them to
hide
the tobacco or beer smell on their breath.

My brother might not like me saying this, (although who cares at our advanced
age), but I remember him using sen-sens to try to "cover-up" his smoker's
breath. Don't think it worked, as I remember Dad giving him the dickens.
(there's another name from the past - "dickens"!)
I think I'll now see if I find any of those names on my radio shows when I
retire for the night. I was listening to an Amos & Andy show a few evenings
ago, when I heard the name "Obama" as one of Andy's friends. I was amazed,
as I never heard of that name until recently. Oh, the things you can pick up
from OTR. Just love it!

How many in the digest remember them?<
You betcha! And though (tieing it in with the recent threads about Coffin
Nails on radio) I seem to recall that it was invented to cover the smell of
cigarettes on the breath, my dearly departed non-smoking Gramma introduced
me to
them.
Vermont Country Store sells them for $[removed] a box.
Ouch! They always have nice, rare stuff - but that's either insanely
expensive, or such a quantity that it'd go stale before all used!
Till not that many years ago, you could still get a single pack at the
checkouts of Duane Reade drugstores here in NYC; don't see them [removed]
though
you can still sometimes find a similar "perfumy" tasting product, "Violets."
Best,

What was the "Chicago Pause"?
Apparently New York-trained radio actors could instantly identity
Chicago-trained ones by the latter's use of the "Pause" when acting.
But what WAS the "Pause"?

Subject: Benny/Allen feud -- spontaneous?
Both the wikipedia entries for Fred Allen and Jack Benny state
that the famous "feud" started spontaneously in 1937 with a remark
by Allen about an alleged violinist with everyone knowing who he
was referring to.
However, in "fred allen's letters" (the title is in lower case, due
to Fred Allen's habit of not using the shift key), in a letter to
Joe Kelly, dated January 15, 1934, he states:
"jack benny and i have a weekly feud wrapped in cellophane and i
am trying to write another thing with a fellow who comes on the
program for several weeks but who keeps forgetting things and
can't play."
Both Benny and Allen had programs in 1934. Was there any exchange
around that time? I was wondering if maybe it was planned, but due
to other circumstances, they couldn't work it in until 1937.

I'm putting the final touches on a book about
"Superman" that specifically covers the history of the
radio series and the George Reeves TV series.
I'd like to ask someone - preferably two people - who
know and enjoy the series, if you'd be interested in
proofreading the seven chapters pertaining to the
radio years; if anyone is interested, please contact
me off-list.
I can provide either an MS WORD doc file, or a
double-spaced printed-out version, with an SASE to
return it marked-up. Thank you in advance.

Subject: Re: DRAGNET AND CSI NY DIALOGUE
Grams46 wrote in part:
has anyone else noticed the similarity in writing >
style between the folks (jack webb, etc) who wrote >
joe friday's lines and those who are writing mac
taylor's (csi ny) lines?
Yep - along with those who wrote Lennie Briscoe's
lines (LAW & ORDER) and Gil Grissom's lines ([removed])
and the lines of durn near every other lead cop in a
crime show since DRAGNET debuted.
One of the reasons - okay, actually the MAIN reason -
I wrote "My Name's Friday" was because the template
Jack Webb had created was not only still in use (I was
finishing up the book during [removed]'s debut season),
it was still popular ([removed] was a top-10 show in
2001; LAW & ORDER was in the top 20). Yet Mr. Webb
was not getting any credit for the genre; worse, his
legacy was being ridiculed via insulting promos for
DRAGNET 1967-70 on TV Land, and by TBS airing the Dan
Aykroyd parody version seemingly every other week.
Maybe LAW & ORDER and the [removed]'s aren't as rigid as
DRAGNET, but they spotlight cops who get down to
business, do the legwork and solve the case,
occasionally laced with sardonic or ironic [removed]
and they owe it all to Jack Webb, who believed that
audiences could be engrossed in crime shows other than
hard-boiled private eyes. Obviously he was right.

Subject: Smoking, writing, and acting
they smoked on camera to make themselves
or their characters appear either tough or debonair.
I would strongly disagree. When the author is unable to write lines that
portray characters as "tough or debonair" they have them smoke, mistakenly
thinking that will make them look "tough or debonair". The concept of
achieving
this impression is illogical as there is quite a difference between tough
and debonair. Development of the character through dialogue would solve the
problem. Smoking just kills time and gives the actor something to do when
the
author fails to provide the character with appropriate dialog and action or
the actor doesn't know how to act.
While it might be considered a stretch to compare Shakespeare and smoking,
picture Macbeth lighting up a cigarette when he contemplates bumping off
Duncan. One can hardly argue that Macbeth wasn't a "tough" character. Or
picture
Lady Macbeth smoking when she was urging Macbeth on to do the deed. She was
a tough lady indeed.
Oscar Wilde did quite well in writing lines for debonair characters. While
actors have undoubtedly smoked in productions of his plays, I would suggest
that it is the failure of the actor to portray the blaze debonair look which
the character may require rather than a deficiency of the lines. Importance
of Being Ernest could be played with smoking. But that smoking would
distract
from the lines and would, in my opinion, take away from the development
character and the humor in Wilde's irony.
And then there is G B Shaw. Of course Major Barbara wouldn't smoke but the
industrialist Undershaft (Major Barbara's father) could as he would be
considered tough and also corrupt. In the production I saw he didn't although
there may be productions where he did.
And then there is Mrs Warren's Profession, also by GBS. Considering Mrs.
Warrens "profession" it could be considered very logical for her to smoke.
But
she does not need to. The quality of the lines are such and there is no
need for them to be augmented by irrelevant action.
The only smoking I would suggest is appropriate in a GBS play is in "St.
Joan."
As I said:
The quality of writing is in inverse proportion to the number of cigarettes
smoked.
Larry Moore RN BA (Drama) AAS (Nursing) (Not bragging!! Just the facts
ma'am.)
PS: I first heard this phrase as applied to physicians and particularly to
teaching hospitals and new interns. There the phrase was. "The quality of
the practice of medicine is in inverse proportion to the number of ordered
tests."
