Subject: Hal-Jughead's "Archie" Book

I regularly delete past Digest postings, but I made a point of
copy-and-pasting the info on Hal Stone's new "Archie" book cited on a recent
message. I'm thinking of ordering a copy.

But I wonder: Hal, are you offering to sign a number of the books reserved
for those of us who order now before the masses will be obviously inundating
the bookstores? It would be nice to get in now, before the flood, with a
more personalized copy.

Having just read Hal Stone's new magnum opus I'm awash in a lot of
[removed] know this is heresy, but I never heard "Achie Andrews" and I
never saw the Archie Comics so I can't speak to that subject. But I do know
that Hal has captured the "feel" of theater and radio with great exactness
and done so in a bright and breezy style.
He has also provided nice introductions to people who may have existed only
as names and are now persons It's a fun read.

Subject: SUSPENSE book query

It was just suggested this afternoon that I post a query, toss it around,
and gather feedback for the next few days.

Five or six years ago I wrote my first book (which began as a high school
project) and it documented the history of the radio/TV show SUSPENSE. 480
pages thick, with episode guide to the radio and the TV show.
Almost a year ago it went out of print - that it so say, it's no longer
available from dealers and bookstores.

During the past few weeks and maybe the past couple months, I have had
people constantly asking me and encouraging me to have the book get
reprinted. Now it's been reprinted over the years as each reprint sold out,
but someone just gave me the contact info of a company that can reprint the
book just as it is - in order words, they can reprint it without it looking
any different than the original. But I really don't feel like paying to
have another large four-figure printing as I have done in the past, which is
why he gave me the small printing company that can handle a 200 or 300
printing.

My question is this: Besides John Berrima and Ted Kneebone and others on the
Digest who have been encouraging me to do at least one more reprint - even
if it's a small one - is there any interest? Are there any others on this
digest interested? I have yet to decide whether I should invest on a small
200 printing unless there was a large enough amount of people who still want
a copy. Anyone else on this digest other than Chuck, Erika, John or Ted
hoping it was still available?

I'm just gathering feedback. I can place my order in a couple weeks and
have the 200 reprints in hand around February if there is a large [removed]

Subject: best theme songs

I've been hearing a lot lately about a list of the top 50 [removed] show theme
songs. It got me thinking about what people think are the best theme songs
from radio. Two that come to mind for me are the theme from the 6 shooter. I
read that listeners would write in to find out where they could get the music
from the show.
another one, which is actually similar to the 6 shooter theme is the
theme from 'Henry Aldrich'. both very melodic.
but if i had only 1 vote, it would have to be the theme from 'Suspence'.
the simplicity of an E major arpeggio overlaped with the dissonence of the
'minor' sounding chuch bells. I can just see the fog and a haunted house on a
mountain with a bell tower when i hear the music.
what are some other good ones?

Bob Burchett sent me his preliminary front page for the Cincy Convention
flyer, and I've posted it on my web site:

Subject: Don Knotts on radio

Joe Salerno writes regarding the A&E Biography Don Knotts

As you probably know, Knotts played in radio as a child.

Don Knotts did not perform on radio as a child. He grew up in West
Virginia, graduated from high school there, and went into military
service as an entertainer (first as a ventriloquist and later as
stand-up comedian.) After his military hitch ended in 1949, he landed a
major role in the Bobby Benson radio show at WOR-Mutual. Then in his
early 20s, he played an old geezer, "Windy" Wales." Later he got
occasional parts on some NYC soap operas, but other than his stint on
the B-Bar-B Ranch, he had little radio experience.

Any Alan Ladd fan interested in a biography of him? Book is free but
will need to send money for a mailer and postage. I just have the one
book. Great book but as all the great OTR books keep coming out I am
forced to clean out the bookcase:( The book does hit briefly on his
radio work. BTW I mentioned it before but if you have not you ought to
consider buying Hal Stone's book. Its a keeper. The only thing I do not
understand is why Jug's wife does not want people stopping by to pick
one up. I would love to see the Prince's palace. Come to think of it I
have no idea where he lives! Dennis

>From Those Were The Days --

1932 - Groucho Marx performed on radio for the first time. Using his
fast-paced, ingenious patter, he invented a new form of comedy that
delighted audiences from coast to coast. (I am assuming this is the
Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel series.)

BTW, I wish to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving.
