(When he first shows up in the Benny program, he's a hot
dog vendor for a while--what's so Jewish about that?
Quite a bit. Just last week, PBS ran the first of several episodes
of "The Jewish Americans," which explained how the Jewish peddler was
a common phenomenon all over Europe, where Jews often could not own
land or work in various occupations, and being a traveling peddler
was one occupation open to them. Many of them, when they came over
to America in the 19th Century, took up the same occupation, to the
extent that the Jewish peddler became a common phenomenon all over
the midwest and west.
But in America, where European restrictions were absent, many of them
moved from a backpack to a pushcart to a horse-drawn wagon to a
store, and from there to a chain of stores. Nonetheless, a hot-dog
peddler was certainly a Jewish stereotype.

Subject: Victor Borge again
Here's yet another Victor Borge memory. I was a junior in high school in
May 1955 the first and only time I saw Victor Borge in person. Strangely
it was with a high school class. I lived in a suburb of NY, about 30
minutes from Grand Central Station, and theater 'field trips" were not
unusual. ([removed], I saw "Comedie Francaise" with my French class and "Peter
Pan" starring Boris Karloff and Jean Arthur with a drama class; can't
remember which class sponsored our Borge outing)
I think there were about 20 of us and our teacher had arranged for us to get
autographs. Two of us, which happily included me, were selected to visit
Borge personally in his dressing room after the performance where he would
sign the playbills for all of us. I was quite thrilled; we were rolling in
laughter during the performance and were crazy about him . He was so
gracious, friendly, playful and didn't rush us at all, joking while he was
signing a pile of playbills for the class. My first impression was of his
dressing room. The walls were papered with reviews, photos, of Victor and
of Victor with other celebrities. He was the toast of the town during the
run of his show so there were plenty of celebrities being photographed with
him. In the biography in the Playbill they include some of the comments of
reviewers. "Brooks Atkinson in the New York Times described him as 'The
funniest entertainer in the world' while Walter Kerr wrote in the Herald
Triune: 'This is the year of the Borge - The Borge era on Broadway"
Walter Winchell observed that he "was greeted with unprecedented reviews.
They pelted with superlatives. Shakespeare and Ethel Barrymore never
received such adoration from critics anywhere."
The show ran at the John Golden Theatre on West 45th St. from Oct 2, 1953
through Jan 21, 1956, a total of 849 performances which set the record at
the time for solo performances. Playbills were dated weekly so I know we
attended the show the "week beginning Monday, May 2, 1955"
Further info from Borge's Playbill bio are consistent with what others have
reported, with slight variations or more detail in some instances:
"Borge was in Sweden preparing to tour that country with a new revue when
Denmark was invaded [April 9, 1940] ..On the opening night he received a
telegram that his mother was gravely ill and had been hospitalized in
Copenhagen. A few days later, despite warnings by the Police Commissioner
against returning .he slipped into Denmark under the arrogant nostrils of
the occupation troops. His mother pleaded with him not to remain. Victor
resumed his tour, but continued to pay furtive visits to her bedside. When
she passed away, the last link with Denmark had been broken."
It goes on reporting his migration to the US. I confirmed Borge Rosenbaum's
passage to NY from Sweden by his ship's manifest (source: [removed]).
The manifest reports that he obtained a visa in Stockholm Aug 7, 1940,
sailed from Petsamo, Finland on Aug 16, 1940 on the ship 'American Legion'
and arrived in NYC Aug 28, 1940. He gave his occupation as 'actor'. (Also
in the Playbill bio it is stated that he had "starred in Danish movies"
alternating between stage musicals and motion pictures.)
Regarding his radio career it is stated that ".he was engaged for a studio
warmup on Bing Crosby's radio program. The next week Borge was on as a
guest and continued for 56 weeks as Crosby's funnyman. Later the
unpredictable Dane headed 'The Victor Borge Show,' 'Lower Basin Street' and
other radio entertainments." Is the Crosby info correct?
A reference to Cornish Game hens was not included in the Playbill bio but I
distinctly remember reading that he had been responsible for introducing
them in the US, starting on his farm in Connecticut.
Signing off,
Irene

Subject: Bob LeMond, Jr.
I am saddened to report the death of legendary
announcer, Bob LeMond, who was 94. He did lots of
early television announcing, but I remember him so
vividly and personally when I used to visit the radio
program, "Our Miss Brooks". According to the Los
Angeles Times (January 15, 2008), he began his
broadcasting career in the mid 1930s. He passed away
at his home in Bonsall, CA. I have not checked on
whether he was an honorary SPERDVAC member, but my
guess would be that he certainly was. He had been in
touch with many SPERDVAC officers and members and had
been helpful to the organization. He was a very
friendly and charming man, and he will be missed.

I believe he had a daughter Rikki Borge, who was also a comedian
in her own rite. She appeared recently on PBS to assist with personal
remembrances of her father and to help promote the premiums related
to her father's career.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Can anyone help?
I received this email on my web site recently. If anyone can offer
suggestions, please drop me an email and I can pass it on to the requestor.
"In the 30s and 40s [the Golden Age of Radio] my grandfather did a lot
on Polish Radio from Chicago etc. I'd like to try and retreive some of
that for a surviving daughter. I expect that it hasn't let the planet
and is around somewhere but I'm wondering where I might look/inquire. I
don't expect as much as was culled by the Yddish Radio Project, but
similar pieces,... those aluminum disks "for the FCC." His radio name
was Bartek Bieda [Tadeusz Kantor] and yes I do have have history of
which stations, when. Can you suggest where I might dig,...? Thanks.
Bill Hale, Sausalito, CA"
