Subject: Joe Feeney remembered

I was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Joe Feeney, the
Irish tenor who was famous on the Lawrence Welk TV show. I had not
known that Feeney got his start on radio, but then, most of the
singers from his era did. I remember about 15 years ago being on a
bus with other Welk regulars who were performing in Madison, Wis. I
was visiting a friend of mine (another singer on the show), and she
invited me along. Joe was just as good in person as he was on the
air, with a powerful voice that could fill an area. This man was born
to sing! I remember in the hotel lounge after the show, some younger
performers (not associated with Welk) recognized him, and induced him
to entertain. Feeney jumped up on top of a table and serenaded the
crowd sans microphone, with some rousing Irish songs.

Later on the bus, when he and I were briefly alone, I told him how
much I enjoyed his rendition of "Sunrise, Sunset" (from "Fiddler On
the Roof") -- so he sang it for me acapella. I never forget how his
voice echoed up and down the length of that bus, and how hauntingly
beautiful and rather melancholy his rendition was. Joe was a barrel-
chested guy with amazing breath control and a VERY wide vocal range.
The fact that he could fall victim to a respiratory illness without
even being a smoker, is a lesson to us all.

I can't think of another tenor right now as good as Joe Feeney. Thank
God for the PBS reruns every [removed]

But does anybody know of any other OTR tenors who are of particular
note? I think of Dennis Day on the "Jack Benny Show," of course --
but who else was a popular tenor in the "golden age" of radio?

Subject: Reveille With Beverly

As Jack French notes the movie does not really have anything to do with the
radio program, although the movie is mildly entertaining in its own right.

The oddest thing is that in the move Beverly is a disc jockey on a single
radio station, but her program is apparantly heard all over the country. And,
no, the station isn't WLW and her program is even on during daylight hours
and not at night. But, after all, anything is possible in Hollywood.

This obituary for former Friends of Old Time Radio guest Kay (Linaker)
Phillips from her hometown paper in Keene Newhampshire ran yesterday.

It mentions her association with Bob Hope and Jack Benny along with various
other details of her life in Hollywood.

We shared a table at FOTR in the last year or two and she aoppeared frail
but cleraly still in possession of all her faculties into her 90s and seemed
to enjoy the event.

From Those Were The Days --

4/27

1921 - Weather broadcasts were heard for the first time on radio when
WEW in St. Louis, MO aired weather news.

1931 - NBC presented Lum and Abner for the first time.

1932 - The Texaco fire chief, Ed Wynn, was heard on Texaco Star Theater
for the first time. Wynn, a popular vaudeville performer, demanded a
live audience to react to his humor if he was to make the switch to
radio. The network consented and Wynn became radio's first true superstar.

1937 - The initial broadcast of Lorenzo Jones was heard over NBC.

4/28

1947 - Studio One on CBS was first broadcast. The show was full of great
stars, but no sponsors. CBS dropped Studio One after a year on radio.

4/30

1945 - "How would you like to be queen for a day!" That opening line,
delivered by host, Jack Bailey, was first heard on Mutual on this day.
The first Queen for a Day was Mrs. Evelyn Lane.

1945 - Arthur Godfrey began his CBS morning show. His theme was Seems
Like Old Times. Arthur Godfrey Time ran until this very same day in
1972. Godfrey's show used live talent and not records. His popularity
with listeners was the major reason that several sponsors gave Godfrey
the freedom to ad-lib their commercials and, from time to time, joke
about the products as well.

5/1

1931 - Singer Kate Smith began her long and illustrious radio career
with CBS on this, her birthday. The 22-year-old Smith started out with
no sponsors and a paycheck of just $10 a week for the nationally
broadcast daily program. However, within 30 days, her salary increased
to a more respectable $1,500 a week. (That would be $[removed] and
$18,[removed], respectfully, in 2007. [removed])

Subject: War of the Worlds TV Movie

"The Night That Panicked America," a made-for-TV movie
(1975) about the panic broadcast, is finally available
on DVD. If you haven't seen it, it's really quite
good. It alternates scenes of the studio performance
with various people out "in the world" listening and
getting frightened.

Because Paul Stewart, who was a part of the original
broadcast, was a producer of the film, the studio
scenes seem to be fairly authentic, allowing for some
dramatic license, of course.

The seller is [removed] Kaelin's Earthstation1, this guy
who's making a career of digging up all manner of old,
obscure films (not to mention OTR), and repackaging
them on DVD.
