Subject: Jack and Fred Allen's death
Can anyone out there tell me the episode of the Jack Benny Show that has
Jack
talking about the death of his friend Fred Allen?
Do you mean the tribute done right after Fred's death where Jack sounds like
he's on the verge of tears throughout the recording?

Subject: This week in radio history 21-27 October
Those were the days --
10/23
1932 - Fred Allen made his radio debut. His wife, Portland Hoffa, joined
him on the CBS radio broadcast. Allen's comedy-variety program was known
as "The Linit Bath Club Revue". It then became "The Salad Bowl Revue",
then, "The Sal Hapatica Revue", "The Hour of Smiles", "Town Hall
Tonight", "The Texaco Star Theatre" and finally, someone with just a bit
of sense, came up with "The Fred Allen Show". The comedic legend stayed
on radio for 17 years.
10/24
1929 The Rudy Vallee Show was broadcast for the first time on NBC.
Actually, the Rudy Vallee show had several different titles over the
years, all of which were referred to by the public as The Rudy Vallee
Show. Megaphonetotin' Rudy and his Connecticut Yankees band were
mainstays on radio into the late 1940s.
10/25
1937 Stella Dallas made her debut on the NBC Red network. Stella hung
out on NBC until 1955 with Anne Elstner in the title role for the
entire run. Stella Dallas was "A continuation on the air of the
truelife story of mother love and sacrifice, in which Stella saw her
own beloved daughter, Laurel, marry into wealth and society, and
realizing the difference in their tastes and worlds, went out of
Laurel's life."
10/26
1935 A talented twelve year-old sang on Wallace Beery's NBC show.
Judy Garland, delighted the appreciative audience. The young girl would
soon be in pictures and at the top of stardom. It would be only four
years before Ms. Garland (George Jessel gave her the name, thinking it
would be better than her own, Frances Gumm) captured the hearts of
moviegoers everywhere with her performance as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
10/27
Marconi, Fessenden, and De Forest were the catalysts. However, it was an
engineer for Westinghouse Electric who, in 1916, was broadcasting music
from his garage (in Wilkinsburg, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh) over a
wireless (amateur radio station 8XK) who really got the whole thing
started. A newspaper article about the broadcasts caused such interest
that the head honchos at Westinghouse decided to build a real radio station.
It took until this day in 1920 for the Westinghouse radio station to
receive a license to broadcast. The license for KDKA, Pittsburgh came
from the [removed] Department of Commerce. Although the license was
officially issued on this day, KDKA did not start their broadcast
operations for a week (they had to wait until the license was posted in
the station). On November 2, 1920, the station aired the returns of the
Harding/Cox election ... the first radio programming to reach an
audience of any size ... approximately 1,000 people.
1947 This is Nora Drake premiered on NBC. Nora solved domestic, social
and childraising problems until January 2, 1959.
1947 "The one, the only Groucho" Marx appeared as quizmaster on You
Bet Your Life for the first time on ABC. George Fenneman was
Groucho's straight man. Fenneman stayed with Marx during the program's
run on radio (1948 to 1959) and TV (1950 to 1961). By the way, who is
buried in Grant's tomb?

Episode 50
EDDIE HUBBARD & THE BROWSERS: "ON TOP OF THE WORLD" "DEEP IN THE HEART
OF TEXAS"
It's time for big band music and fun in the Trivia Tower with Eddie and
the Browsers from 1999. Here "Deep in the Heart of Texas" it's like
"Sittin' on Top of the World," at least in song in this episode with
performers Alvino Ray and Les Paul and Mary Ford. And the word love
appears in several song titles in this show such as "Be My Love," "Love
Is a Many Splendored Thing," and "Make Love to Me." More love songs
include "Honey," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "Night And Day,"
"Laughing on the Outside," and "A Hundred Years from Today." Among the
artists who perform are Helen Forrest and Benny Goodman, The Four Aces,
Kay Starr, Dinah Shore, Jo Stafford, and Sylvia Syms.
The Browsers try to stump each other with trivia topics with questions
like these: Who besides Dinah Shore recorded "Laughing on the Outside?"
What band leader wrote "Honey" and what instrument did he play? Who sang
the song "I Could Have Danced All Night" on broadway and in the movie
"My Fair Lady?" Who sang the song "I'm Sittin' on Top of the World" in
the "Jolson Story/" What name did the Mills Brothers use at the start of
their career? Who did the arrangement for Benny Goodman's recording of
"Soft as Spring?" What song titles have the name "Texas" in the title
besides "Deep in the Heart of Texas?"
The show begins with Mason Williams' popular "Classical Gas" and ends
with Andy Williams' recording of "Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars" (sadly
cut off near the end by the station). Sadly, after Andy passed away
recently, our nights do indeed seem a bit quieter now and stars do
somehow seem a little less bright. His "Moon River" will surely always
flow through our hearts! So let's dedicate this Browsers rebroadcast to
Andy Williams in appreciation for the great joy he has brought to so
many through his recordings and TV shows, especially at Christmas time.
This Christmas I will be thinking of Andy and these words from
scripture: "From the fullness of his grace we have all received one
blessing after another," and truly one very special blessing was Andy
Williams.
Our thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting this original
Eddie Hubbard studio tape for highest quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time
Episode 5
In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"

IS there such a show? Fred died in March, 1956, and Benny's show on radio
ended in May, 1955, according Haendiges' log. And according to the same
source, repeats of Benny didn't begin until October of '56. (Hmm, so what
happened in the intervening year on Sunday evenings at 7?)
I began listening to Jack Benny on radio in February 1955, and I
remember that this was occasioned by my mother reading in the paper that
Sunday was Jack's birthday, and he would be 61. My mother then
commented on his claiming that he was 39, and I wondered if his show
that night would be about his age (it wasn't until much later that I
learned that he did a show about his birthday every year in the radio
era). Anyway, my 10-year-old sense of humor being stimulated, I looked
up in the newspaper what time and station he was on and listened. I
listened to Jack regularly on radio thereafter, and I think I'd remember
if there was a year's hiatus. I think there wasn't one. I didn't even
realize at first that the show was in reruns on radio.
I do remember a separate tribute to Fred Allen on radio. It came at a
time when our TV was out of order, and we all sat in the livingroom
listening to it on the large wood-cabinet radio which now graces my own
livingroom.

Subject: Halloween Shows
It's been awhile since I've played this episode (i know, shame on me), but it
is called "The Wind" and i "think" it was on Radio City Playhouse.
Storyline (from memory):
A WW2 vet with a slight mental problem calls his friend about the wind
coming to get him. The friend's wife forbids going to the man stating she is
tired of running to the man's house only to find out it's a false alarm. The
man calls several times that night all the while the Wind sounds more and
more intense. In the end, the Wind takes the man.
