This Week's Classics & Curios Show:

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 131

EDDIE HUBBARD & THE BROWSERS: "SAINT JAMES INFIRMARY (BLUES)" & "THE
LAST ROUNDUP (BOOGIE WOOGIE)"

Long ago deep in the archives of my episodes here on Jerry Haendiges'
network, we heard a Bob & Ray bit in which they tried hard to dismount
from their horses like good cowboys should but could never quite make
it. On this episode of the "Browsers" the song "The Last Roundup (Boogie
Woogie)" sounds at first a little like a tune that perhaps might have
been composed by those two low-key, off-center cowpokes. Actually the
song is really the traditional "The Last Roundup," but the recording by
Gene Krupa and his band adds an unexpected boogie woogie touch and was
the first recording by Gene after he became a bandleader. Benny Goodman
sat in for the recording as a sideman and what a recording it was! ...
Oops! I just gave away the answer to a Browsers question concerning the
name of the famous bandleader who played as a sideman in Krupa's band on
this recording.

So it is indeed time for another "Eddie Hubbard & the Browsers" show
from Trivia Tower, and this one from January 30, 1999, is a "gasser." In
addition to hearing Benny Goodman as a sideman, we can enjoy him and his
band doing "Somebody Stole My Gal." Then we find out who had the first
and last recording of that song at broadcast time.

Later we hear a super jazz recording, namely, "Saint James Infirmary
(Blues)," performed by Earl "Fatha" Hines. Louis Armstrong, Cab
Calloway, and many others had outstanding recordings of the song, but,
to me, Earl perhaps outdoes them all. The tune itself is based on a
pretty depressing 18th century traditional English folk song with many
versions and variations which was first recorded in 1927 as "Gambler's
Blues" by Fess Williams and his Royal Flush Orchestra. Louis Armstrong
recorded the version in 1928 with the lyrics we know today. By 1930
eighteen or more artists had recorded various versions, including Duke
Ellington under various pseudonyms such as "The Ten Black Berries," "The
Harlem Hot Chocolates," and "The Jungle Band." The song's long and
cloudy history apparently relates to a Saint James Parish Workhouse in
Piccadilly back in the 18th century which continued into the 19th
century. Another interesting sidelight is that one of its tune
variations and its tenor of lyrics, after coming to America in the
Mississippi Delta, moved west and evolved into the traditional vintage
cowboy song "The Streets of Laredo."

The blues of the "Saint James Infirmary" are nicely framed in this
episode by the abridged version of "Rhapsody in Blue" by Glenn Miller
and by "Am I Blue" by Nat King Cole.

Among the more interesting questions by Browsers is "Why was the song
"Laura" not sung in the 1944 movie of the same name?" And "What polka
bandleader recorded the folk song with the lyrics "When I was single, my
pockets did jingle, O, I wish I was single again?"

Phil's "Phooler" livens things up concerning the song "Hukilau;" Keely
Smith sings "How High the Moon" with her southern accent; and violinist
Florian Zabach plays the "bird" song "The Hot Canary." The Los Indios
Tabajaras 1958 instrumental recording of "Maria Elena," the song from
the 1935 movie "Bordertown with Bette Davis, closes this "gasser"
"Browsers" show.
