Subject: Upcoming 40th Anniversary: "the Big Broadcast"
 book

A couple of months ago here on the Digest, I partook in a thread discussing
the merits of the early OTR program encyclopaedia "The Big Broadcast, 1920 -
1950: A New, Revised, and Greatly Expanded Edition of `Radio's Golden Age' -
The Complete Reference Work" by Frank Buxton and Bill Owen. It is generally
agreed by most OTR fans that "Big Broadcast" proved to be an important
"foundation" book in the early days of the OTR hobby even though other
reference books have long surpassed it in terms of expanded information.

Well, I'd like to note that this coming June 2nd marks the fortieth
anniversary of the publication of everybody's favourite canary-yellow
jacketed reference work. My edition is a "Review Copy" with a slip of paper
originating from The Viking Press therein detailing vital information needed
for book review authors. Alongside the "PUB. DATE" legend appears the date
"April 27, 1972," which is crossed out with the new date "June 2, 1972"
written above it in blue ink.

Here's hoping that come June 2nd bloggers and programmers for
terrestrial/Internet/satellite shows celebrating OTR will take the
opportunity to mark this little-known anniversary by, to use a modern-day
turn of phrase, "giving their props" to Messrs. Buxton and Owen.

Yours in the ether,

Derek Tague
