TRIBUTE TO FRANKIE LAINE, PARTS 3 & 4: FRANKIE & LADIES OF SONG &
FRANKIE'S COWBOY & COUNTRY TOUCH
Back in Episode 12 (here in my archives on Jerry's network) we featured
parts 1 & 2 of my "Tribute to Frankie Laine." It's time now for Parts 3
& 4 of that tribute show, first broadcast in 2004 while Frankie was
still with us. The tribute series embraces some 6 decades of Frankie's
recordings, his amazing diversity, and many hits among his 21 gold
records. While the first 2 tribute parts highlighted early influences
and his rise to stardom, in Part 3 we'll showcase Frankie's duets with
some great ladies of song, including Patti Page, Doris Day, and Jo
Stafford. Frankie performs songs like "Sugarbush" with Doris and "I Love
You for That" with Patti. We'll hear Frankie and Jo on "Hey, Good
Lookin'" and jazz versions of "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" and "High
Society." Fun novelties include "If I Were You I'd Love Me" with Patti
and "How Lovely Cooks the Meat" with Doris. Then Frankie's unique
energetic rendition of classic country tunes takes center stage in Part
4. Frankie adds his own observations from time to time, and performers
like Patti and actor Clint Walker contribute their comments on Frankie.
And Frankie shares the hugely popular theme song from TV's "Rawhide,"
along with wonderful cowboy recordings such as "Mule Train," "Midnight
Gambler, "The 3-10 to Yuma," and "Along the Navajo Trail." In his last
decade of performing Frankie recorded the CD "The Nashville Connection,"
which has 2 of his final recordings that are my favorites. The first is
"Contagious" which characterizes all of Frankie's energetic performances
and "Father Time," which is a touching tune reflecting courage and never
giving up in face of the adversity of passing time and diminishing
performance. Also in Part 4, we get a chance to experience a bit of
Frankie's radio performances when in 1950 Frankie was a guest on "The
Bob Hope Show." Frankie does a fun and funny cowboy sketch with Bob in
which they sing an exaggerated but delightful version of "Bury Me Not on
the Lone Prairie." Frankie "hams it up," and Bob "stops the show" with
an imitation of Frankie doing "That's My Desire." Earlier in 1949
Frankie joined Peggy Lee on radio's "The Chesterfield Supper Club."
Peggy does "This Can't Be Love," and Frankie sings "September in the
Rain." In addition we'll hear a tribute extra from Frankie's friend Herb
Jeffries, who was the screen's "Bronze Buckaroo" in 1939 and who was
also one of Duke Ellington's greatest jazz vocalists. Herb sings "I'm a
Happy Cowboy." That "Happy Cowboy" song title reflects both Herb's and
Frankie's outlook on all of life and eternity as well. In fact, though
Frankie went "Beyond the Blue Horizon" to the Lord in 2007, right now I
can almost hear him telling us it's his "Desire" to remind us of [removed]
Lewis' words: "There are far better things ahead than anything we left
behind." Until we have those better things, virtually all of his
recordings are still available on the Frankie Laine Team website at
[removed] Also on the website you can find details about plans
for a super memorial 100th birthday celebration in San Diego in March of
2013 and how you can attend and enjoy performances by several of
Frankie's famous friends. In a few weeks we'll conclude my "Frankie
Laine Tribute" rebroadcast on Jerry's network with parts 5 & 6, and then
during the week of the great birthday party in 2013 we'll celebrate by
sharing the entire 6 part tribute of nearly 3 and a half hours. For now,
here are Parts 3 and 4. Enjoy!

Make Believe Ballroom Time
Episode 5
In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"

I've been watching a chapter a week of the old serial "The Green Hornet
Strikes Again." To my dismay, Keye Luke's Kato proved to be a rather inept,
if enthusiastic, fighter. It got me thinking ... obviously my first VISUAL
impression of Kato was Bruce Lee on the TV series. Did the radio program
ever acknowledge the valet's pugilistic prowess? Clearly in the movie
serial, the Hornet was the better fighter.
