Subject: Re: Margaret Truman, radio personality?
Later, for a seven year period, she had her own radio show called
"Authors in the News." I've never heard of the latter series, nor
does it appear in any standard OTR reference book, including
Jay Hickerson's Ultimate History. Anybody know where the
Washington Post got all this material on Margaret's radio work?
The series wasn't OTR. It ran from 1966 to 1973. A June 1966 New York
Times column item says that the show was scheduled to be a syndicated,
five-minute-long, Monday-Wednesday-Friday series in which Truman
interviewed authors of current books and magazine articles. In the
handful of newspaper radio listings I looked at, the title is given as
"Author in the News."

Subject: Co-op Advertising
In the February 1 edition, Michael Hayde asks,
I'm currently researching a network radio program that
was, for a time, sponsored on a "co-op" basis. Could
someone please clarify what that means from an OTR
perspective?
When I was professionally involved in radio in the 1960s-70s, co-op meant
that a radio spot for a particular local business was paid for, in part, by
the manufacturer of a product being featured in the ad. In other words, if
Jones Hardware sponsored a spot devoted to advertising Stanley tools,
Stanley would pay a part of the cost. Frequently, such a spot was supplied,
either in script or recorded form, with places to insert the name of the
local business.

>From my days in commercial television, co-op
sponsorship meant that the national advertiser was
sharing the cost of the ad at the local station with a
local dealer. Frequently this was the case with, say,
a Ford ad with the local dealer tag at the end. This
would also be the case with home appliances and other
products of the type.
Now, whether or not that was the case in the OTR era,
I can't say for sure, but it seems likely.
Now, I'll sit back and read the responses from other
Listers with the actual *correct* answer and think, oh
well . . . [sigh].
