Subject: Rod Serling on Radio

Just a heads up. On Tuesday, September 29, OFF THE PAGE on station WSKG will
feature an hour-long special about Rod Serling because of the 50th
Anniversary of the TV series. Bill Jaker, the host of the program, will
feature a report on Rod Serling's radio days from the late 40s and early 50s.
This will include exclusive interviews with Mike Kittross, Mike Sanders and
Serling's Cincinnati neighbor, Sual Marmer. They will also feature excerpts
from a couple of the 1946 WNYC radio broadcasts scripted by Serling, and
re-create a bobby-soxer show from his time at WMRN in Marion, Ohio.

There will be other goodies including a retrospective of the TV series and an
interview with one of Serling's duaghters. The program will run from 1 to 2
pm on Tuesday afternoon (East Coast Time) and then be reaired at 7 pm later
that evening. Anyone who wants to tune in can visit [removed]. Doesn't
cost anything to listen and the fact that someone has covered the radio days
of Rod Serling is wonderful since everyone else seems to be covering the TV
series. And Bill Jaker did a lot of legwork to track down these people
(including Serling's neighbor) so there should be some great stories and
information brought up during the program.

Subject: Jack Benny / Orson Welles Question

There was a period of about 5 weeks in the 1940s when Jack Benny was sick
from his program (Mary was out with him as well) and Orson Welles was the
substitute host.

I thought Orson did a hilarious job on the program and theose 4 or shows are
among some of my favorites. To hear Orson inter-play with Phil Harris is
priceless.

My question is - does anybody know what Jack was out sick with?

Borge may not have borrowed from Templeton, but he was almost
certainly influenced by Grock, a famous European circus clown. And
let's not forget Beethoven and Haydn were big musical jokers. Of
course Borge had many emulators, including Mousie Garner of the Spike
Jones band.

Subject: Who knows what the deal is with the sponsorship
of the Shadow episodes "Appointment with Death" and "Can the Dead Talk?"?

I was listening to the "Appointment with Death" and "Can the Dead Talk?"
episodes of _The Shadow_ on the "Knight of Darkness" collection from Radio
Spirits, when I noticed a curious anomaly. The episodes, broadcast March 12
and March 19, 1939, respectively, should've been sponsored by Blue Coal. But
both were sponsored by Goodrich. Which sponsored the 1938 summer season with
Orson Welles.

No, a Welles' era commercial wasn't accidentally grafted onto these episodes.
At least not onto "Appointment with Death." That's clearly William Johnstone
as the Shadow-- not Welles-- in the middle commercial.

To add to the confusion, the copy of "Appointment with Death" in Radio
Spirits' "Legends of Radio The Shadow Greatest Radio Adventures" has Blue
Coal commercials. (It's still Goodrich for "Can the Dead Talk?").

Since it wasn't Welles' voice in the Goodrich commercials, we know a Welles'
era commercial wasn't (in a manner of speaking) spliced into these Johnstone
broadcast. So, at first glance it would appear that in some markets at least,
Goodrich sponsored the show on at least two occasions in the 1938-1939
season; and that episodes from that/those market(s) happened to be what Radio
Spirits used for the "Knight of Darkness" collection.

I can only guess that Radio Spirits didn't use the same master for
"Appointment with Death" that they used when they made the one for the
"Legends of Radio Collection." The sound quality on the tape is not as good.

Whatever the reason, it's curious that neither Dunning's _Tune in Yesterday_
or _On the Air_, or the list of _Shadow_ radio broadcasts in _The Shadow
Scrapbook_ mentions Goodrich as a sponsor other than in the summer of 1938
(and reruns of those same episodes in 1939, according to _The Shadow
Scrapbook). Guess it must've been a small market where it Goodrich sponsored
those two episodes. And if Goodrich didn't sponsor those two, how did they
come to have Goodrich commercials, one of which featured Johnstone, who was
not yet the Shadow in the summer of 1938?

The Shadow wants to know.

No, really. He called and said so.

Rick

[removed] A _Shadow_ scene I'd like to hear:

Cranston: Well, Margot, with Dr. Madscientist in jail, the world can breathe
easy.

Margot: Yes, Lamont. It can.

SOUND: A HARD, FORCEFUL PUNCH

Cranston: Margot, you hit me.

Margot: Damn right I did. You were in the labratory the entire time, and yet
you waited until Dr. Madscientist was just about to put that scalpel to me
before going into your whole Shadow laugh schtick. Why do you _always_ wait
until the last moment, Lamont? It's like you're trying to draw out the
suspense for the benefit of some radio audience somewhere. Next time, worry
about me first and drawing out the suspense later. Or else.

MUSIC OUT.

Also, Margot really needs to learn to lock her car doors when she's waiting
for Lamont to return from Shadowing (no pun intended) the bad guys.

And Lamont needs to learn to _not_ tell people he's really a man physically
in the room (or wherever). Bad guys can and have used that against him. As in
"Appointment with Death."

You'd think both would've learned their lessons.
