From Those Were The Days
3/18
1940 Light of the World was first heard on NBC. The soap opera was
unique in that it featured the Bible as the center of the story line.
3/21
1924 The voice of Lowell Thomas was first heard on radio. Thomas was
heard talking about "Man's first flight around the world", on KDKA in
Pittsburgh, PA.
3/22
1948 The Voice of Firestone was the first commercial radio program to
be carried simultaneously on both AM and FM radio stations.
3/23
1940 Truth or Consequences was first heard on radio. Ralph Edwards
produced and hosted the program. The show was originally heard on only
four CBS stations. Later, NBC picked up the show where it eventually
became the most popular of all radio quiz shows.
3/24
1932 Belle Baker hosted a radio variety show from a moving train ... a
first for radio broadcasting. The program originated from a Baltimore
and Ohio train that chugged its way around the New York area. The
broadcast was heard on WABC in New York City.
1935 After a year as a local show from New York City, Major Bowes'
Original Amateur Hour was heard on the entire NBC network. The show
stayed on the air for 17 years. Later, Ted Mack took over for Bowes and
made the move from radio to television.

Oh my! I never expected so much response to my simple (I thought) question!
I found the answer to my original question (Jack Webb's character was
condemned to immortality) from several people. It was the ESCAPE episode,
"The Ring Of Thoth". I received so much MORE information than I ever
expected, though. I've listened to several of them, and in none of them
does Webb sound like Joe Friday. I now have some demos to prove that Webb
was NOT a one-character actor.
Thanks everyone!

Subject: Jack Webb
Jack Webb's appearances on "Suspense" seem fairly consistent with the
usual character he played. In ROTC in college, I saw a film on proper
behavior as a prisoner of war, which he narrated in his usual dead-pan
way. His character is so well-known, that just this past week I saw a
recent court opinion quoting Jack Webb's "Just the Facts, Maam." But on
at least one ocasion he did comedy. I have a video of him as guest on
an early-1950s Milton Berle Show. He was even smiling broadly.

I was watching "The Green Hornet" marathon on television this last
Saturday and noticed that he's 'considered to be a wanted criminal' by
those in the police department. There are several mentions of "The Shadow"
where I've heard him referred to as somewhat the same type of individual.
My question is, "If both of these characters assisted the police in
solving
their crimes, why were they thought of as criminals themselves?" Was this
just a misconception on the part of the police? Professional jealousy? Was it
because they were almost caught at the scene of the crimes?
I've checked up on both of these characters and some, many in fact,
of
the listings I've read refer to them as 'crime fighters'. Was it just the
mystery
surrounding them which got them this reputation? There were others
surrounded
by mystery who solved crimes but never received a bad reputation (Blackstone,
"The Lady in Blue").
What do you think?
