Subject: ventriloquist acts

It seems to me that the essence of a great ventriloquist act is more
in the quality of the writing of the routine and the acting ability
of the performer in bringing his characters to life, making them
somehow believable as a separate entity.
If the acts that thrived in radio had their origins in vaudeville on
stage the ability to move the lips or not is still less of an issue
given the distance of the performer from most of the theater
audience. I think the lips moving or not only becomes a major issue
in film close-up and in television.

Subject: [removed] family affair?
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I've noticed many brother and sister teams who were involved with
OTR. Some of the ones I remember are Billy and Florence Halop, Fred
and Adele Astaire, The Andrews Sisters, The Ritz Brothers, The Marx
Brothers, George and Ira Gershwin, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, The
McGuire Sisters, among others

Also, there were several husband and wife teams: George Burns and
Gracie Allen, Fred Allen and Portland Hoffa, Jim and Marion Jordan,
Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone, Goodman and Jane Ace, Monty and
Natalie Park Masters, The Hummerts, Ozzie and Harriet Hilliard Nelson,
Dorothy Kilgallen and Richard Kollmar, and many others I'm sure.

I also learned recently that Natalie Park Masters ("Candy Matson")
was a cousin to actress Celeste Holm (from Jack French's book,
"Private Eyelashes").

Although I'm drawing a blank on her name at the moment, I believe
that the actress who played Jane Stacy on "My Friend Irma" and her husband
(who was a director) were both in OTR.

And what about the kids? Candice Bergen, Topper Masters, David and
Rick
Nelson, seem to come to mind. I'm sure there were others.

Can anyone else think of any more? Seems to me that OTR was, in it's
heyday, very much a family affair.

Another OTR Fan,

Kenneth Clarke

The names of the husband and wife team I was trying to think of
were Elliott and Cathy Lewis. They had quite a career on radio on
various programs, too.

Also, magicians, especially the "illusionist" types. :)

Subject: Round Robin

I remember the good old days (1999 ha ha) of my last round-robin, scrambling
through the weekend trying to copy as many as 25 tapes so that I could get
them back in the mail and on to the next person on the list by the following
Tuesday.

Is anyone interested in an MP3 or WMA "round-robin" via email transfers?

Contact me off-line if you are interested and I will share my ideas with you.
If this works out it could be a good way to get some quality OTR in either
MP3 or WMA format.

In defense of Radio Classics: It seems that most of the unfortunate
experiences with Radio Spirits download service occurred many years ago - as
far back as 1999. At that point, the service was actually a part of MediaBay
Downloads (a separate enterprise). Radio Classics, as it exists today, did
not come in to being until 2002.

It is true that earlier incarnations of the download service were lackluster
at best, but the Radio Classics of today is worth a look - and you can take
that look for free at: [removed] you can sign up for a 30 day free
trial that will let you stream an unlimited number of shows and let you
download up to 20 hours of content. Our Digital Rights Management (DRM)
system allows users to download each file to up to two computers, listen to
each file as many times as they wish from their computers, burn them to CD's
and/or transfer them to a portable device. Over the last three months, we have
added more than 200 episodes to the site, and continue to add at leat 25 new
episodes every week. The service is reasonably priced, and all of the
programs are officially licensed through the series rights holders.

I would appeal to Donald, the gentleman who introduced this line of
discussion, to let us know whether or not our support team was able to quickly
and easily solve his technical issues.

 Karen Lerner

In my collection are 4 broadcasts of the Crisco Radio Newspaper, Chappell
and Flynn doing the honors. Woven into those shows are announcements
[removed]
what ration stamps are good that week
when you can buy shoes with the right coupon
gallons of gasoline you can get with an A card, etc.
The regular entertainment shows have many of these announcements:
Gildersleeve, Fibber and Mollly, Sherlock Holmes (war bond drives), etc.
Recruitment of nurses, save your scrap metal and scrap paper -- the list is
endless. Maybe we should go back to rationing so the youngsters will
realize that war is sacrifice, even on the home front.

Gathering all these PSAs might make an interesting project for someone. I
estimate that it would take about the same amount of time to do this as it
took to win the war!

Another one would be collecting the songs with war themes: Any bonds today?
When the lights go on again all over the world. Comin' in on a wing and a
prayer. ...and all the rest.

Subject: War Songs

Ted Kneebone, speaking of my observation of OTR PSAs from the World War
II era, notes,

Another one would be collecting the songs with war themes: Any bonds
today? When the lights go on again all over the world. Comin' in on a
wing and a prayer. ...and all the rest.

I have three CDs with "Remember Pearl Harbor" themes, and many of them
have wartime songs. In addition to the titles Ted mentioned, these
include, "Remember Pearl Harbor," "Keep 'Em Flying," "He Wears a Pair of
Silver Wings," "Praise The Lord and Pass the Ammunition," Fellow on a
Furlough," "Private Mary Brown," "I'm In The Army Now," "The Deepest
Shelter In Town," and an interesting Bing Crosby number, "Buy a Bond."

However, a lot of the songs on the CDs are period pieces, rather than
being strictly related to the war.

How did Mr. Ford become a "senator"? What's the mythos behind this?
Did he mock-represent a state, and, if so, which one?

Sometime in the 1950s I remember him being on a TV show where he
explained that. He was at some event where several senators were
introduced. So when he was introduced next, he was introduced
facetiously as "Senator Ford," and somehow it stuck.
