Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Himan (Hi) Brown RIP
There were many producers and directors in OTR, but very few of them tried
and were siuccessful in bringing radio back in the 70s. Hi Brown did just
that, with the CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Through his casting, we were able
to again hear some of our favorites from 20 years before, such as Bryna
Rayburn, Mercedes McCambridge, Ralph Bell, Cort Benson, Arnold Moss, Bob
Dryden, and Amzie Strickland, to name a few. Amzie always told the story that
if Hi called a rehearsal for 3:00 PM, and you arrived at 3:01, the
read-around was already on page three!

Subject: A Tribute to the great Himan Brown
I want to be among the first to salute the life of Himan
Brown. For many, many OTR fans of a certain age, our forties or fifties now,
the CBS Radio Mystery Theater was our golden ticket to the joys of radio
theater. It did not matter that the stories were often bland and occasionally
hokey, they were always great fun. And they were always there, night after
night, seven days a week, until one dark night, they were gone. But that ember
remained, and unlike previous generations, we were lucky enough to have the
convenient technology of tape to fan it back up. Thirty years later, of course,
the Internet virtually reignited the fire. Over the years, Mr. Brown has had a
few bricks lobbed at him by the List, but at this hour of his passing, I recall
a different memory. It was 30 years back, when Mr. Brown spoke via live phone
interview on the local radio station that carried the Mystery Theater. He was
the embodiment of grace and charm, giving questioners serious or foolish the
same courteous consideration. The magic he concocted in New York City had no
problem washing out over the prairies to my home
in the Montana mountains. Radio drama was blessed to have an artist as
skilled as Himan Brown,
and we as a country were blessed to have such a gentle man. Dying at 19 is a
tragedy. Dying at 99 is a triumph.

I recently interviewed John Abbott, the author of the 3-volume set re: Johnny
Dollar, published by Bear Manor Media. I happened to be in the DC area for
family and business reasons, and John was very generous with his time. He had
some interesting insights into the series and its production, and how he
developed an interest in the series. It turns out that unless he had hurt his
ankle 8 or so yrs ago, there would never have been a book.
[removed]
The link expires in 30 days. Thanks to John for allowing me to post it for
all to enjoy.
Literally, on another "matter" related to YTJD, John asked me to listen to an
AFRTS copy of a show in common circulation. It turned out that the
commercials in his copy of the show documented in the book are totally
different than the copy that I had. We checked yet again, and that was true.
Did AFRS/AFRTS regionalize their broadcasts, such as having certain
commercials in Europe, others in the Pacific or so forth? Or did they have
multiple releases of the series in later years? We're both curious as to what
this might be.
Regards to all in OTR

I note that Himan Brown has died at age 99.
Mr. Brown was a guest in December, 1973, on WTIC's Golden Age of Radio,
where he was interviewed by Dick Bertel and Ed Corcoran. Dick, Ed, and I
drove from Hartford to New York to record the interview in the CBS Radio
Mystery Theater studio, a television studio that had been converted to a
radio studio. It was there we learned all about the yet-to-be aired program.
You can hear that interview, plus excerpts of some of the programs Himan
Brown created at [removed] - Go to Program #45.

I'm reading an Easy Aces script and found a comment I did not understand.
Here is the quote. Goodman Ace is speaking:
"...the first year we were married - I made an agreement with Jane that
every time I told a joke about her mother, I'd have to pay her a dollar.
Barbara Hutton we called Jane that year."
Does anyone know the connection between Barbara Hutton and a dollar--other
than the fact she had millions of them?

Someone recently wondered what the title of Gildersleeves Christmas Chimes

dated 1949-12-14. I love the old radio Christmas and I love Gildersleeve
