"Colonel Flack" was revived for television syndication
in the 1958. The new series, again starring Mowbray,
recycled all 39 scripts from the original one season
series.

Subject: 16" discs of TV shows

Ed Carr wonders why there are 16" transcription discs of TV show
soundtracks.
It was standard practice to record the soundtracks of TV shows back
in the later 1940 into the 50s.
These were reference sound recordings for the networks or the sponsor
to listen to for various reasons:
To make sure the commercials were delivered properly; that the shows
did not contain unwanted material;
that the scripts and the rhythm of the shows were what the sponsor
wanted, etc.
It's kind of a throwback to how radio shows were recorded,
considering that all they had to record and
preserve TV shows were the use of kinescope recording and THAT was
EXPENSIVE. As time went on and
TV shows became more profitable, the 16" sound transcriptions were
dropped because it became easier
to simply kinescope entire shows. Once kinescoping started, it became
even more profitable to send those kinescopes out
to various states to be shown on the air "at a more convenient time."
That is simply because there was no system
established to transmit a TV picture signal (with sound) across the
nation. Only when microwave stations were
established across the country could the networks drop the use of
kinescopes. Thus ended an era and a new
one begun.

Subject: Remember Uncle Russ?

The Metro Washington OTR Club was just contacted by Charles R. Thompson
of Eureka, CA. From 1948 to 1952, he wrote, produced, and starred in an
AFRS kids' program called "Let's Pretend With Uncle Russ." This 30
minute show was aired overseas on Saturday mornings and thousands of
military dependents heard Uncle Russ and the other characters he
voiced: Percy Penguin, Ricky Robot, Captain Comet, and Rocket Ranger
Jane.

Kids fan clubs dedicated to the show sprang up over Europe and Asia and
multitudes of listeners joined what Russ called the "Around the World
Safety Club." Membership cards sent to juvenile fans included the
photograph of "Uncle Russ."

Thompson now has his own web site, which features memorabilia from that
radio series, including fan mail sent to him. You can view it at
<[removed]>

For those of you who listened to this show as a kid, Thompson would
love to hear from you now. You can email him at
