A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

There are about 400 listed now at:

Of special interest will be the Jack Benny stamp at:

Right-click on the image and depending on the system you are using there
will be some kind of command to set the image as your wallpaper. Or you
might want to print it out as a poster. (I don't suppose that any of
you will consider going into the industry of printing your own stamps,
of course!)

also heard Phil Harris & Alice Fay, Tom Mix, A Lights Out program
that turned out to be Suspense & was about a man in handcuffs as he
tried to recover 25 thousand that he hid plus a Gunsmoke show from
1960 that was about a woman who had kidnapped an indian child because
her child had died. There were some kids visiting the studio & a fine

radio CD's as part of a contest on the show. Oh & I forgot to
mention Jack Armstrong The All American Boy. I heard that too.
Reception in Houston Texas was fair to good as your station faded up

be listening to KFAQ 1170 AM each Sunday evening for this show. Would
you let the shows announcer know he has gained a listener from
Houston Texas? Also I'd like to get some of the free CD's he is
giving away if that is possible.

I wanted to thank the OTR community for the outpouring of love and support I
have received concerning the death of my mother Gweneth Wenold Tague (born in
Wythall, Worcestershire, England, January 1st, 1926), who died Sat. March
28th, 2009 in Livingston NJ. She was 83 and had been in failing health since
suffering a stroke in April 2000. The official cause was complications from
pneumonia, but she had also suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Being a mystery
lover, she was a big fam of first-run CBSRMT. Occasionally, I'd lend her some
Phillip Marlowe, Johnny Dollar, and Nero Wolfe tapes. Sometimes she'd listen
with me to various over-the-aor OTR showcases such as Max Schmid's "Golden Age
of Radio" out of WBAI in NYC -- Jack Benny and Fibber & Molly were particular
favourites.
I'd particularly like to thank my pals Listmaster Charlie Summers, Melanie
Aultman, Ken Stockinger, Jack French, Steve and Rene' Thompson, Martin Grams,
and Jay Hickerson for helping in spreading the word this past weekend. Here's
a link to my mother's on-line obituary from today's (30th) Newark
"Star-Ledger".

Your Library may be able to get you access to OTR books from other
libraries via Inter-Library Loans.
Another possibility would be to try the non-circulating "Reference" section
of your own library (and its associated branches). Most of the "expensive"
OTR books, particularly those published by McFarland, are found on the
Reference shelves, in which case your problem will be to set aside time to
read on site.
I'm not sure what the Intra-Library Loan policy is on Reference books.
Possibly it can be done, but again you'd have to read the book at the
library; you won't be permitted to check it out.
On a related note, you might also keep an eye out for library book sales. As
libraries make room for new titles, a lot of books - even "Reference" copies
- wind up on the "for sale" shelves after a few years, with prices as low as
$[removed] per hard cover.

I saw a few vanity license plates this last week which have OTR
connections.
I saw an antique Packard with a plate that read "Fibber". One car had a
plate
which said "Gracie".
Yesterday, I saw one which said "Lil Beaver" which I believe was a
character
on the Red Ryder series. I could be wrong.
I'll be on the lookout for more.

Subject: The Beauty of Inter-Library [removed]
This can't be emphasized enough:
If you live in or near a major city, or suburban area, JUST about every
book is available to you.
The mentioned NATIONAL service is also impressive. Once, when
researching a project, there was a book I wanted to consult that was so
rare, it wasn't even available from the book dealers I knew. (This was
just before the internet explosion.)
All I had to do at the Queensborough Library, though, was fill out a
card--That was it!--and within a few weeks I had the book, from Kansas
(one of the few libraries in the country that had the thirty-year old
tome.)
One tip--
Some libraries that you would think are off limits, are FREE to join.
The New York Public Library only requires [removed]
You do not need to live in Manhattan, or one of the boroughs.
(Same thing with the borough branches--which are actually, in a couple
of cases, a different system.)
And, libraries here in Long Island, after decades of charging, recently,
up to as much as nearly two hundred bucks for an annual, non-resident
membership--
Are now also free.

I'm surprised no one mentioned buying used books through Amazon or other
websites. I've bought several that way, although mostly I try to buy them
new. I know this will not thrill authors on this list, but the used book
market is a long tradition and certainly not an Internet phenomenon. Just for
example, I checked out Jim Harmon's Great Radio Heroes (sorry, Jim, although
I did buy yours new) and found the following prices: $[removed], $[removed], $[removed],
$[removed], $[removed], $[removed], $[removed] and $[removed] plus shipping, of course. And they
certainly aren't necessarily in mint condition, either, I'm sure.
If you can't afford them new and it's tough to get them at the library, at
least that's another alternative. Also a good way to get out of print books.
Just a thought.

Subject: Bing Crosby Philco show
On Sunday night as I was in my car as listening to the "40s at 4"
channel on XM satellite radio, I heard part of the Bing Crosby Philco
broadcast from 4/23/47, featuring Peggy Lee. What intrigued me is
that Bing started to sing a Frank Sinatra song, and then loused it
up. He stopped, made some spontaneous comments about the difficulty
in singing it, suggested they turn it into an instrumental, jumped
back in and then said as an side (paraphrasing) "it's not a bad song
once you learn it." I thought the whole thing was hilarious, and so
did the audience, which roared with laughter. This went on for awhile
as he struggled through the song.
I'm wondering if any OTR fan out there would happen to have a copy of
this broadcast that I could acquire?
Please let me know how I might obtain it. It was really fun to hear
Mr. Crosby screw it up and yet make light of that [removed] I was a
little surprised because I thought his shows were recorded by 1947,
which means it would have offered him the opportunity to edit out the
mistake if so desired.

The short answer:
"In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the "[removed] Johnson Company" was making a soap
entirely of palm and olive oil, the formula of which was developed by [removed]
Johnson in 1898. The soap was popular enough to rename their company after it
- "Palmolive".[1] At the turn of the century Palmolive, which contained both
palm and olive oils, was the world's best-selling soap, and extensive
advertising included The Palmolive Hour, a weekly radio concert program which
began in 1927. A Kansas based soap manufacturer known as the "Peet Brothers"
merged with Palmolive to become Palmolive-Peet. In 1928, Palmolive-Peet
bought the Colgate Company to create the Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Company. In
1953 "Peet" was dropped from the title, leaving only "Colgate-Palmolive
Company", the current name."
