Subject: mp3 player
Just sharing some info. I bought a Go Video player at Costco which plays
CDs, DVDs, VHS, JPEG and MP3s. (It also allows for copying of DVDs to VHS,
but I can't figure out why I'd want to do that) I nervously put in an mp3
of OTR and the contents popped up on the TV screen big as life and operated
by remote and the sound was great. The jpeg feature is also excellent.
My husband is recovering from a stroke and I run a slideshow of family
pictures on the TV in the living room to assist with his recovery of short
term memory. So now I don't have to be around my computer or listen by
earphones to OTR at home, or bring someone into my messy office to look at
pictures. With a $10 rebate it cost about $90.
Usual disclaimer. I don't have any financial interest in Go Video --
unfortunately.
And, I don't want to stir up the 'scripts thrown on the floor' discussion
which I didn't participate in because I had no knowledge about it, but I was
reading Leonard Maltin's 'The Great American Broadcast' the other day and on
page 120 appeared the following:
"How to handle a script was indeed, one of the mundane but crucial skills a
radio actor had to acquire. Adele Ronson recalls, 'You had to be very
careful. A lot of people dropped the pages on the floor as they finished.
I didn't like doing that, so I just put it underneath, but I was very quiet
about it.'"
[Off topic and personal, we Greek-Americans are real proud of how good the
Athens Olympics turned out.]

Subject: Did Chester ever kill anyone?
on 8/30/04 11:18 PM, chris holm asked:
Did Chester ever kill anyone else, or even shoot anyone? Thanks.
***He sure did. In "Kitty Caught" (October 16, 1954), Matt and Chester
commit "cold-blooded murder" because it's the only way to save Kitty's life.
It's one of the 40 episodes I selected for Radio Spirit's recent ULTIMATE
GUNSMOKE COLLECTION, which also features a historical booklet by --Anthony
Tollin***

Subject: Skitch Henderson, etc.
Wasn't Skitch Henderson the band leader for "The
Tonight Show" at one time? That show has had many
bands and band leaders over the many years it's been
on the air. If he was one of their band leaders, it
must have been back in the 1960's (pre-Doc Sevrinsen).
Could someone out there clarify this for me?
Also, who were the quartet on the OTR program
"The Bob Hawk Show" (sponsored by Camel cigarettes)?
Every time a contestant would get all of his/her questions
correctly answered, this quartet would sing:
"You're a smartie,
What a smartie.
Take your seat in the LEMAC box."
LEMAC was the sponsors name spelled backwards. Near
the end of the program, everyone who'd answered their
questions right during the course of the program would
be asked a question. There would be five answers and each
would begin with the letters in the word LEMAC. Anyone
who provided five correct answers would be named the "LEMAC
of the Week" and would earn whatever the prize money
happened to be.
The only reason I'm asking about this quartet is because
they sound so familiar. I think I've heard them somewhere
else, and if I knew who they were I'd might be able to
remember where.
BTW, a few weeks ago someone offered some grab bags
of OTR programs, but I've lost his contact information. If
he'd contact me off list I'd appreciate it.
Another OTR fan,
Kenneth Clarke

Subject: K-Surf will drop Jack Benny
Hi Everybody,
I receive a telephone call from K-SURF here in CA telling me that they are
going to drop Jack Benny radio show on Saturday night in October. I do not
know if that mean just the Jack Benny show or all OTR. Take care,
Walden Hughes

Subject: Re: Frank Sinatra on terror?
For those of you who clicked on the link I gave in the last digest, only
to find the site closed down ... well, sorry. It was obviously put up
temporarily for friends. But, it was such a funny site that I saved it
for posterity and put it up on my own space here:
[removed]
It was apparently a featured site in Jewish World Review magazine and,
at one time, was on their space. A very irreverent response to terror
in this parody of Frank Sinatra.
Regards,
J. Alec West

Subject: Gloria Dehaven with Jan Savit
Hi Everybody,
does any one have a copy of 1938 Jan Savit band remote from wCAU in
Philadelphia with Gloria Dehaven? I would like to find a copy of it and
give it to Gloria when I call her next week. I recall Jazz Hour put it out
on CD, and Nostalgia also had it in there catalog. I hope to announce soon
both the Friday and Saturday panel I am hosting at SPERDVAC. The Friday
panel is half set, and waiting for the final all right on a well-known movie
star for Saturday. Take care,
Walden Hughes
