Brent Pellegrini asks:
Did Richard Breen, who wrote the incredible stuff on Pat Novak, ever carry
this writing in fiction or the silver screen or anywhere else?

As a writer, Breen has 24 films to his credit at the imdb (go to
[removed],+Richard+L.) He also directed one of them,
"Stopover Tokyo" (1957).

He did four films with Jack Webb, all of them post-"Novak": "Appointment
with Danger" (1951), "Dragnet" (1954), "Pete Kelly's Blues" (1955) and the
TV Movie "Dragnet" (1966). Some of his writing here will remind you of "Pat
Novak," particularly "Pete Kelly's Blues," but it's safe to assume that
outrageous metaphors, which characterized the narration of our favorite
waterfront PI, were not a staple of Breen's film work.

There was a woman who contacted me a couple months ago about a branch of
Inner Sanctum Mysteries, to which I now have a box of audio cassettes, CDs
and other stuff she was looking for. I embarrassingly misplaced her address.
If she could contact me, I'll be able to send her the package.
Thanks!

 CINCINNATI CONVENTION ANNOUNCEMENT

This is a very exciting time for those of us involved in the Cincinnati
Old-Time Radio & Nostalgia Convention. The convention is moving to new
 facilities.

We have located larger facilities, very near where the convention has
been held in the past. We feel that all of the positive memories you
have from past conventions are about to be enhanced.

Some of the things that you will notice right away are:

 1) A larger dealers room. This will allow dealers that have always
wanted to come in the past and could not because of space limitations to
make their wares available to you.

 2) A recreation room that is large enough to seat ALL of you, for EVERY
performance. No more standing in line to get a seat.

 3) A more scenic location.

 4) Close enough to the old location that you can still visit your
favorite restaurant and many new ones, including Hooters (for people like
 Burchett).

 5) Next to a large cinema complex.

 6) Still near the expressway so that you can visit the Radio Museum,
Museum Center at Union Terminal, Zoo, Aquarium, Kings Island or any of
the many other attractions that the area offers.

 7) More hospitable room rates. $[removed] per night versus the old rate of
 $[removed]

 8) An enhanced dining room and a hotel lounge that is open until 1:00
 [removed] (instead of 10:00 [removed]).

There will be other subtle changes that will enhance your time with us.
Plan your vacation for April 11 & 12, 2003. OTR thrives.

 Robert

Subject: Radio Spirits

Denise Francis asked about Radio Spirits:

Could someone tell me how they own so many of the shows and make it
unavailable for just listening, not copying or selling?

In a brief history, Radio Spirits was founded by Carl Amari, who was a
young collector just like many others. As he began to sell his tapes, he
began to assemble licenses to sell a number of the series. Some of his
licenses have been questioned, but no one has outright challenged the
company. As the business grew, he professionally cleaned the copies he
obtained and spent money on the cleaning and marketing of the programs.
Soon, Audiobooks purchased Radio Spirits and the inventories of two other
major companies in the hobby - Radio Yesteryear and Adventures in
Cassettes. Radio Yesteryear had the bulk of the material. Amari continued
to function as General Manager of the Radio Spirits division but was let go
at the end of his contract agreement and the material moved back to the New
Jersey base of Audiobooks.

Both the original Radio Spirits and the new one is in the business of
making money from their collection. Making it available for listening via
the Internet means essentially giving it away because there are many who
can easily produce copies, then begin to pass them around via the net.
Since the company spent lots of money trying to produce and market quality
copies, they cannot afford to diminish the value of their inventory by
making it easy to reproduce.

You can still listen to "When Radio Was" which was created by Amari and is
on-line. The program features many radio programs. There are certainly many
programs on the Internet that can be listened to via streaming audio (or in
many cases downloaded), though the quality is not usually equal to what RS
has produced (keeping in mind the cost they incurred producing those
quality copies).

Keep in mind there is very little incentive for otr dealers to spend money
to provide their programs for download via the Internet, especially after
spending money hunting out rare previously unreleased programs as well as
funds cleaning them up. There are simply too many others who will simply
turn them into mp3's or if they already are in that format, re-upload them
for anyone regardless of costs incurred by others or copyright protections.

Subject: why frank fay was not in the movie

my guess is frank fay wasn't used in the movie, just as julie andrews
wasn't in my fair lady, because the producers need an actual
popular-at-the-time star. and they likely had jimmy stewart under
contract already, as for his "problem" hadn't he proved he had conqured
it?

I hope they do better by radio than NBC did with their 75th (more like the
last 25).

Subject: Ray Erlenborn

Hi folks,

In Waukegan on June 8, members of the IJBFC are going to be doing a
recreation of Jack's 9/23/51 radio show. We are most fortunate to have the
talents of Eddie Carroll (foremost Jack Benny impersonator), and Ray
Erlenborn (no introduction needed).

Since I'm most likely going to be the one up on the stage introducing the
gang, can someone post a complete resume on Ray? Would love to be able to
impress the crowd with the extent of his work.

(Oh sure, I could ask him myself, but then that would let all of you out of
the fun.)

the Waukegan festivities on Bill Bragg's show on 5/26. Thanks for the
mention, Walden!

Subject: Inner Sanctum Question

Fibbermac here-

Does anyone know what the relationship was between the
programs "Inner Sanctum" and "Mystery Playhouse"? I
have a few episodes of a program called "Mystery
Playhouse", hosted by Peter Lorre, that seem to be
nothing more than Mr. Lorre introducing an episode of
"Inner Sanctum".

I know that Martin Grams was researching "Inner
Sanctum" at one time. If he, or anyone else on this
list knows the story behind the relationship between
these two shows, I'd be most grateful for an
explanation.

-Regards,

-The Fibber-
