I know of at least two other times outside of the one mentioned with Orson
Welles, Jack Benny etc, etc, where Johnny Carson discussed OTR , and one of
them even had the added attraction of recreating a "Superman" show from a
wartime original 1944 [removed] guests on that show was Clayton "Bud"
Colyer, the original Superman on radio in the 1940's, Jackson Beck, who was
the original announcer and narrator from the middle of the WW II years until
the late 40's, William Redfield of "The Junior G-Men Of the Air" (1930's),
Frank Buxton, early 1960's OTR author, "The Golden Age Of Radio" and his
revised version, "The Big Broadcast"the early Bible of OTR, and an actress
who I can't remember at this moment, and the original sound effects
[removed] Redfield and Frank Buxton played Nazi U-Boat officers. And guess
who played, Jimmy Olson? You guessed it, Johnny Carson! As usual, he was
hilarious, and at times he did it in a mischievous way, and times almost
broke [removed] whole cast were superb
and very [removed] was to say the least, [removed] audience and cast just
broke [removed] McMahan where the old "Kellogg's Pep" commercial would normally
have been, intoned, "We 'll get back to Superman, boys and girls, but now a
word from our sponsor,"BUDWEISER, THE KING OF BEERS."The studio audience and
cast just broke up.

Subject: Conventions
Hi everyone ...
Is there a good source that lists when and where the various OTR conventions
are going to be? I always seem to hear about them after the fact when people
are writing about how much fun they had!
I'm particularly interested in any events in the Midwest. I live in Wisconsin
and have family in Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan, so those would be
most convenient.
Feel free to contact me off-list or on.
Thanks!
[ADMINISTRIVIA: Um, we do a pretty good job here of noting when the various
conventions occur well ahead of time, along with website addresses where
complete information on each may be found. Just keep an eye on this space.

WOW! CHARLES LANE CELEBRATED HIS 100TH BIRTHDAY (ON THE 26TH)!
We've all heard the expression: "THE GOOD DIE YOUNG", but do you think that
playing the mean old man in so many movies, tv shows and on the radio has an
enduring effect? It definitely worked for CHARLES! Best Wishes For An
Additional 100 Years! You're one of the best!

how the devil do you use the tobacco documents website to
find scripts? And, finally, does anyone know if the tobacco documents website
has any DRAGNET or GUNSMOKE scripts available for viewing?
The site [removed] has thousands of PDF pages archived online;
collected, so I gather, from various lawsuits the tobacco companies have
been involved in.
And since the tobacco companies used to sponsor a LOT of radio shows -- so
some of the items online are radio scripts.
I can't swear that I haven't missed something on their site, but I find
about 250 radio script documents on the site. That's NOT 250 scripts - a
DOCUMENT often consists of 3 MONTHS of scripts from a series.
Anyway, to see them, go to [removed]
Click on "All Collections"...
For a search term, enter "radio continuity" -- with the quotation marks.
You'll get back the matching scripts.
No "Gunsmoke" or "Dragnet" scripts there, but many other interesting shows,
both obscure ("The Fabulous Dr Tweedy") and well known ("Jack Benny") are
represented.
FYI-- while reviewing these instructions, I ended up surfing to some other
sites which ALSO have online historical tobacco documents -- and DIFFERENT
ONES at that. As soon as I can figure out what radio scripts THEY have (and
it appears there are at least a few) I'll let the DIGEST [removed] I'll
post links on my website.

Hello,
For those interested, The Old Time Radio Researchers Group -
[removed]
has all the scripts downloaded. We are currently putting them together for
distribution to the community in general. Sets currently in distribution
include all known scripts for Blondie, and College of Musical Knowledge. We
do have a database being worked on by several people. Check out our web page

Subject: Re: Carson on the radio
I have had several requests for the tape of Johnny Carson on radio. I
have hundreds of cassette tapes and when we moved to Colorado some two
years ago they were packed in several boxes without regard to catagory.
What with so many things to do to this older house, unpacking cassette
tapes has been a very low priority. We are now in the process of selling
land in Texas and purchasing another house in prepration to move my
wife's mother here to be near us. So things are pretty busy but I will
try to find the tape as time permits, but can't make any promises as to
how quick that will be. Thanks for your patience.

As the author of that joke, Robin Hood with a cell phone would be a "cordless

which is, of course a play on the name of the heroine of radio's "Meet Corliss

I just knew that joke would finally find an audience! I'd like to thank Bob &

[I heard this many years ago on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In"; said joke works

On a personal note, I often at FOTR conventions find myself getting cans of

Mr. Tollin likes to repeat one of his journalist father's favourites:

Subject: Cal Stewart?
I've been gone from the list for a while and it's good to be back.
I am looking to find out where I can buy or trade stories by Cal Stewart.
He did rural stories of New England. Cal was originally from Virginia and
the accent he uses sounds like possibly Vermont or Western New Hampshire.
If anyone has any information on Cal Stewart you may want to contact me off
list.
Thanks and it's good to be back aboard.

A belated "welcome aboard!" to Mr. Bennett! I've had the pleasure of bumping
into him in cyberspace before, and want to let you all know that he's a
worthy addition to Charlie's Brigade!
He's knowledgable (especially in the Horror niche), he's a good CD trader,
and - (though a bit OT) - he's one HECK of a graphic artist. (You should see
his genre portraits!)
He's also just a Good Guy (and I don't say that just because he's a Buckeye!)

Subject: Delphi XM Skyfi Remote Control for impaired
vision?
Hi All,
I am asking a question that is not exactly "Old Time Radio", however,
users of this group may have information important to all who have
impaired vision and want to use XM for listening to the Radio Classics
channel.
My Mother (90 years of age) has impaired vision and cannot use the
standard remote control for our Delphi XM Skyfi receiver. I have asked
XM for information on products that could be used for those with
impaired vision. Their response was, "No and they do not discuss future
products." To me, this is a very unfriendly answer to the Federal
Disabilities Act and persons with impaired vision.
The Delphi Remote uses two codes to select one button. So, a standard
"learning remote" cannot be used. Perhaps someone has overcome this
design and has an answer. It would surely be useful for many on this
forum. I can continue this subject off the forum, if needed.
Thanks,
Dick (Anaheim)

The current "WTIC's Golden Age of Radio" programs
with Dick Bertel and Ed Corcoran, featuring Carroll
Carroll and Jackie Kelk, have been posted at
[removed]
Program 12
March, 1971
Carroll Carroll
Carroll Carroll was a Comedy Writer and author of
"None of your Business or My Life with J. Walter
Thompson - Confessions of a Renegade Radio
Writer."
Mr. Carroll served as the head writer for the Kraft
Music Hall for many years, and it was he more than
anyone else who developed the relaxed, jovial persona
of Bing Crosby so well remembered today.
Program 13
April, 1971
Jackie Kelk
An actor well known for his role as Homer Brown in the
popular radio series The Aldrich Family, Jack Kelk also
appeared in features through the 1950s.
In the 1970's Dick Bertel created the program for
WTIC in Hartford, CT. The idea came to Dick
after he interviewed radio collector-historian Ed
Corcoran a few times. It was first broadcast in April,
1970; Ed was his co-host.
For the next seven years the program featured interviews
with radio actors, writers, producers, engineers and
musicians from radio's early days. In addition, each
show featured excerpts from Ed's collection.
