Subject: Wendell Loveless
Kathleen Dean's find of the Wendell Loveless poems with organist Herman Voss
has great OTR [removed], the flagship of what's now the Moody Network
of religious stations, still has that pipe organ that Voss played in their
Chicago studio. As far as I can determine, it's the only remaining playable
radio pipe organ that's still in its original [removed] One of dozens
or possibly hundreds that existed in the OTR days. The instrument has been
recorded quite recently and still sounds fine.

Subject: Robert Benchley
Dave Barry says Robert Benchley was his greatest writer influence. A Google
search says Benchley had a radio show in the late 30's, "Melody and Madness,"
the music being furnished by none other that the famous bandleader, Artie
Shaw. Are there any known recordings? Looks like something well worth
digging for.

It wasn't for radio drama, to be sure, but when I worked at WTSO radio in
Madison, Wisconsin in 1971, everything that was to be read by the announcer
was typed in huge capital letters, maybe 20-point size. (I just tried it on
MSWord, and that was indeed approximately the size they used.) They had a
typewriter that would do this.
And when in the 1970's I hung around Yale U's radio station (WYBC,
immortalized as WBBY in Doonesbury) it was a slow week when we didn't get
someone in who wanted to be a radio personality. The test was to bring them
into an empty studio, stick a microphone in their face, turn on the tape
machine, grab the nearest piece of printed material, and order them to read
it. This cured everyone but the most determined candidates.

On Sep 21, 1939, a station in Washington DC, WJSV recorded its entire
broadcast day. Does anyone know whose idea this was or the history behind
this recording?

Is anyone familiary with an OTR show called Law West of the Pecos? This is
the name of the show, not the name of the episode. From the end credits, it
seems to have been on in 1946. Does anyone have more details about it?

Dear Mr. French,
I am trying to find any audio recordings of my grandfather, George
Milton "Milt" Jones, who sang on radio in the 30s and 40s, mostly in
the Washington, DC area. He had his own evening show on WJSV as well
as W3XK in the 30s. He also won a Radio Talent Quest on NBC's "Daily
News RKO." With my mother, he later appeared in some USO shows.

Subject: Paley and the end of OTR
Regarding Jim Cox's comments about Bill Paley trying to keep
network radio alive and well as we had previously known it:
Just a reminiscence that when I was working at a CBS affiliate in
the mid-1960s, there still was a lot coming down the network
line, though it wasn't of the OTR variety. As Jim mentioned,
affiliates were having to deal with Godfrey in the morning,
Linkletter in the afternoon, 10 minutes of CBS News on the hour,
Lowell Thomas backed up against The World Tonight and what were
called "Dimension" features (as in Dimension on Health with
Charles Kuralt) on the half-hour during the day ... and throw in
still other features, such as sports and "Dear Abby" (with Harry
Bartel announcing)."
Whew! It was running the program director nuts, trying to take
the station from stodgy middle-of-the-road music to at least
upbeat middle-of-the-road and fight for position among the Top 40
and C&W stations. It was hard to get a local station sound going
with all the interruptions.
He had airchecks from other CBS affiliates all across the country
and particularly liked the way WCCO in Minneapolis was doing
things. So he wrote its program director. The reply was something
to the effect that, "We don't try to program around CBS; we
program CBS around us." Great answer, but tricky to execute. I
don't recall exactly how WCCO was doing it, but I know other
stations struggled for what they considered enough time of their
own by cutting the last commercial, to be delayed broadcast
sometime within that same hour and cutting closing tags that
counted for little, something like, "This is Douglas Edwards, CBS
News, New York."

After Krypton would have exploded, in time, there would have
developed an asteroid belt -- but in the Earth's orbit.
The idea was probably just to find some obscure place for Krypton.
By the 1950s, Krypton was said to be in another solar system, and the
fact that it had a red sun is given as another cause of Superman's
powers.
