Good article, though it does contain some errors which I am not sure if
they came from Lefferts or not. I know when I interviewed Lefferts back
in 1996 for the book I co-authored with Meade Frierson III, he was
pretty clear on some things. Glad to know he is still that way.
One example of the error is that "Marionettes, Inc." is not the same as
"Perigi's Wonderful Dolls." The former is based on a story by Ray
Bradbury which is about henpecked husbands attempting to fool their
spouses by replacing themselves with "robots (Marionettes)" so they
could go out and be free of their wives.
"Perigi's Wonderful Dolls" is by Lefferts as the article states and is
about so-called "dolls" actually being aliens attempting to take over Earth.
The mistake is not quoted, so I assume it comes directly from the
interviewer.
But a good interview overall.

While I lived in Chicago from 1965 to 1976 I frequently listened to
American Airlines Music Till Dawn. It was a late night show and I
understand was done in many major cities in the USA with different

Does anyone have any copies of this program - particularly from
Chicago? Does anyone know how long this show was broadcast?
You can reply off the digest if you wish.

Subject: Congratulations to Norman Corwin!
Thanks much to Irene Heinstein for posting contact information for
Norman Corwin!
As the guy who actually typed up those words on Corwin's website, I'd
just like to emphasize that communications are indeed sent on promptly.
The email, in fact, is forwarded automatically (and your return email
address info is included). Snailmail is turned around immediately by
John Weber at the catalog office (dropped into a bigger envelope) and
goes out to Norman's home, usually, the next day.
Norman is usually punctilious about answering mail, but just at present
I'm not really expecting an answer to the email I sent him -- not
anytime soon, anyhow! John told me this evening that a lot of email has
been moving through the website.
Norman may be getting inundated, but I know he's delighted, too, so
don't hesitate to write if you wish. Nothing could please or encourage
him more than hearing from you.

Subject: OTR mini-article; the dynamics of circulating
OTR shows
Hi there,
I wrote another mini article, on the dynamics of the
types of OTR collectors and their role on circulating
shows. In the recent past, I had written How to
Encode/Record Shows Properly, and How to Collect
Quality OTR on a Budget (I got a LOT of requests for
that one. I've been doing pretty well on that score -
for the price of a twenty show, 60 buck box set, I've
been averaging 720 quality, non-compressed, shows from
quality reels (usually first or second generation)
that I bought. 700 extra shows for the same amount,
basically.)
Anyhow, since the article would be too long to post
here, if you want it, email me and I'll send it. It's
in Word form as usual.
I came up with 3 classifications for collectors
(doesn't examine dealers, archives, etc, just private
collectors). 1) There's the trader (the traditional
cassette, CD, reel, etc trader). 2) The sharer (both
ones that broadcast OTR on the radio, the OTR club,
and those who share on any media without a set
expectation of shows in return. 3) And finally, the
hoarder. And before I get jumped on, a hoarder in my
definition is not one who holds some shows back, but
is one who (purposely) does not sell, share, trade,
etc. 95% or greater percent of their holdings,
generally in an anti-social way. The hoarder is a
fairly rare and extreme case, generally confined to
the ET field, which lets out the vast majority of OTR
collectors from this category.
I hope in the future to examine the dynamics of how
these different types of collectors interrelate in
more detail in the future. The mini-article deals
with some aspects of this.
I postulate in the article, while the trader has
traditionally been the driving force and the majority,
the sharer is becoming the dominant one numerically,
due to changes in technology.
The trader, however, is the one that is traditionally,
and still generally is, the one who originates new
shows, and that's explored a bit in the article. This
is changing some, as there are some sharers who are
beginning to originate new shows, but the trader still
holds the majority in this regard.
Anyway, if you're interested email me and I'll pop off
a copy to you. I think the dynamics that shape the
hobby are quite interesting and bear examination.

Subject: Second Class Passenger
Hi all,
As you probably know, both Escape and Suspense dramatized a short
story called Second Class Passenger. If you want to read the
original short story, Project Gutenberg has just put it online. It
is in a collection of short stories. It is in the public domain so
use it as you wish.

Also, I've updated my list of books about vintage radio available to
the blind. Most are on [removed] which requires proof of
disability and membership fees, but a couple are available to anyone
via Project Gutenberg. If you have any printed copies of books to
donate for scanning, are an author or publisher and have error-free
electronic copies, or know of a site which offers other complete
books and not just articles, scripts or excerpts, please contact me
off list. I'm always interested in adding more vintage radio books
to bookshare. Note that dramatic material such as radio scripts
aren't eligible because of US copyright law.

Subject: Dan Reid again
Jim Nixon stated,
there doesn't seem to be any credible evidence that Ernie
Winstanley ever played Dan Reid on the radio series. This despite Ernie's
first-person claim to that effect during a Detroit radio interview conducted
shortly after the death of Brace Beemer
Paul's comment: I would think the fact he was surrounded by folks he worked with
lends some fact to his claim. Normally the actors on the Lone Ranger are not
credited on the air so it would be difficult to come up with an exact list of
people on each episode.
Jim Nixon continues:
in the series which appears to introduce Dan's
character in late 1942, the final episode is titled, "A Nephew is Found".
If Dan had been found earlier, this would not have made any sense.
Paul says: This was basically a retelling of the origin story. But a clue maybe
in the fact that the Green Hornet came on the air in January 1936. I wonder if
the basic (fictional) genealogy of the family as we understand it today existed
during the early Green Hornet episodes?

Subject: Differences
While I am not a fan of "The Lone Ranger," I do have the text of the
interview conducted by radio personality J. P. McCarthy to which Jim Nixon
alluded in the last issue of The Digest.
It is found in David Rothel's book, WHO WAS THAT MASKED MAN (A. S. Barnes,
1976), pp. 124-140.
Ernie Winstanley does indeed state that he played Dan Reid on "The Lone
Ranger." He discusses how director Charles Livingstone picked him up in
Orchard Lake and drove him into the studio for three years, starting in
1934. Livingstone and another director, Fred Flowerday, were present
during the interview. Livingstone started with the program about the same
time as Winstanley.
It seems odd that Livingstone did not contradict Winstanley's version of
events. In fact, his responses to McCarthy's questions seem to enhance
them. Livingstone acknowledges Winstanley was cast in other roles after
his voice changed.
Will the real Dan Reid please stand up!

She was very talented and could play a wide range of roles easily and well.
It was always a pleasure to see her ease into a role the way she did. You

Subject: Inner Sanctum trivia
Hi. I don't remember if I've ever e-mailed you before, but I've been
searching for an Inner Sanctum episode for quite some time. A friend of mine
who passed away several years ago was a big band musician who lived on
Hollywood Boulevard around 1945. The house was across from the Florentine
Gardens and was always full of people from the entertainment business. He
told me that a writer from the Inner Sanctum show was there one night and
wrote down his name. He told my friend, Joe Servello, to catch the next show
for a surprise. When Joe tuned in the episode used his name over and over
again. It kept saying "Joe Servello and his gang from Chicago" and "he had
murder in his eye" or something like that. I'd like to present a challenge.
Joe didn't remember the name of the writer or the episode. If there's any
way you could locate this episode as script or recorded form, it would be
great. If not, and I've already contacted you concerning this, thank you for
your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Sue Pich
Anyone who knows the answer to this, e-mail me and I'll forward your reply
to her. I'm on the road most of the week so there's no rush in answering
this if anyone knows the solution.
