Subject: Those Were the Days-past and present

I didn't have a chance to mention this to the group last week, but last
Saturday's "Those Were the Days" program was devoted to "Eddie Cantor and the
Stars of Broadway" and featured Eddie with Bobby Breen and Deanna Durbin on
"Texaco Town" (from 1936), as the host of "Eddie Cantor's Show Business"
(from 1952) and as the star of the commercial recording "Eddie Cantor at
Carnegie Hall" (which wasn't actually recorded at Carnegie Hall, but that's
another story). To hear it all between now and next Monday night (plus Bert
Lahr on the Fred Allen Show and Ethel Merman on Philco Radio Time), join us
at [removed].

And to hear "Those Were the Days" live every Saturday from 1 to 5 pm CST is
invited to join us at [removed] ([removed] FM to you Chicago-area folks). This
Saturday, we present a variety of shows, including "Have Gun, Will Travel,"
"The Charlie McCarthy Show," "Bill Stern Sports Newsreel," "Songs By
Sinatra," "The Mysterious Traveler," and "The Adventures of Maisie." I hope
you can join us!

Subject: Why not the soaps on radio?

So another TV soap opera had bitten the dust. I seldom watched them, but
they must have had some loyal followers. I do remember seeing some of them
during the summer of 1957 when some unions were on strike. The cameras were
manned by management.
What interesting pictures we saw! The floor, the ceiling; we saw
cameras coming out from behind parts of the sets!
Now that many of the TV soaps have faded into -- wherever they fade -- I
have a suggestion. Why not revive some of them on radio? Or start some new
ones? They should be cheap to produce. No sets, no makeup, no costumes.
Just the actors, announcer, and the organist. And surely the sound effects
person and the director. Go back to the 15 minute format.
Use radio people, out of work movie stars, DJs who can read, etc. (I
recall hearing Casey Casem on CBS Radio Mystery Theater.) Maybe the writers
for TV can write radio. Some courageous radio network will come forward and
try this experiment.
This new format could help keep drivers awake -- maybe. No need for
talking on cell phones or texting. Just good listening and a [removed]
"Tune in tomorrow for another chapter in the story of "Just plain Sam,
brain surgeon." "Bernice Suggins, computer programmer." [removed]

Subject: ROMA WINE

I think I told this story before but some years ago I was visiting
Wilmington, Delaware with a friend and we came across an old second-hand
store. A
lover of browsing, we went in and selected a few knick-knacks.
One was a bottle with no top but an interesting design like a scalloped
collar around the neck as it rises to a spout.
I needed something like that for my kitchen as I cook a lot and need olive
oil handy. Not wanting to open a top every time, I purchased a
speed-pourer like you see on liquor bottle at a bar and it soon became an
invaluable
addition to my kitchen.
It worked perfectly and did so for several months.
Then it got kinda grimy from use near the stove so I decided to hand wash
it.
Looking up into the light to see if I had dried it I was startled to see:
- ROMA -
The numbers 1957 were there too but I have no idea if that was a date or
catalog number.
So now when I cook and reach for that bottle I can hear the jingle in my
mind and do my perfect imitation of Truman Bradley.
R-O-M-A. Roman wines, Fresno California!!!
My wife still doesn't know what the hell I'm talking about.
Thanks for the memory jog.
See ya in October at the FOTR.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Where do I begin? Some shows did have a smooth transition from
radio to TV ("Gunsmoke", "Dragnet", etc). Some were more popular on TV
than radio ("I Love Lucy" springs to mind). Some of them, however, did
better on radio than they did on TV ("You Bet Your Life", "The Goldbergs",
"The Thin Man" w/Peter Lawford, "To Tell The Truth", "What's My Line?"
and even, I've heard, "People Are Funny").

IMHO, some of the comedies which began on OTR but were more successful
on TV did so in some part to the proliferation of 'sight gags'. Audiences at
the time seemed to get the point of the jokes faster because they could see
the absurdity in front of them.

Game shows were still in their beginnings, but seemed to do alright.
Panel
shows like "What's My Line?", "The Quiz Kids", "Information Please", and the
like
didn't fare as well as others, but did act as springboards for many careers
later on.

There are many more examples, I'm sure.

As always,

Kenneth Clarke
