It's been tossed around that all the extra music without the ads in the
Cinnamon Bear is a waste of time and space. I guess it depends on who is
listening to it. My two year old son loves the music. Each night we start the
show and the music allows him time to get the Cinnamon Bear book and his
blanket and then crawl into the chair with me. At the end of the episode when
the music comes back on, he simply says "daddy, dance with me" and we do.
I wouldn't trade that extra two plus of minutes of time for anything else in
the world.

"Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it."
--Hal 9000,
"2001: A Space Odyssey"
I hear you, Hal. I hear you. And I share your grief. I think MY mind is
going, too -- I can't even COUNT straight anymore!!!
I made a couple of whoop-de-doos in my long post there: it seems there are
SEVEN discs (not six), and only TWENTY-six episodes (and not THIRTY-six) of
"The Cinnamon Bear".
That, naturally, throws off all of my elaborate calculations. I'll spare you
the gory details; suffice that the series wastes 4,160 seconds, or 69:20,
which amounts to a little over five and a half episodes' worth of space,
rather than more than seven as I originally thought.
But even though that's a lot less than I originally thought, it's STILL a
monstrous amount of wasted space!
To Frank McGurn -- the recordings you want are on the SEVENTH and last (not
the "sixth and last", as I originally said) disk of the 7-CD set (NOT the
"6-CD set" that I orignally mentioned); they are labelled "Audition sides 1
and 2".
Sincere apologies for the mistakes -- I really DO care about such things! :(

Two points from Digest 240 that I wanted to comment on:
1) As I think we all know, the Cinnamon Bear ran for 26 episodes, not
36--unless that music's longer than I [removed]
2) Martin's post about the Green Hornet compels me to mention that he and
Terry Salomonson allowed us to print an excerpt from the book in the new
Winter 2010 issue of Nostalgia Digest. To preview what looks like a great

And of course, this Saturday, Those Were the Days ([removed]) wraps up the
Cinnamon Bear with the final four chapters.

The NYT is reporting the passing of actor Val Avery
([removed];ref=obituaries).
His widow is Margot Stevenson. I presume that's *the* Margot Stevenson -- the
second Margo Lane, and the inspiration for the character's name? (I've always
heard that it's spelled Margot in the radio scripts, though having never seen
any I can't verify this. I do know that when Gibson imported her into the
pulp books he dropped the "t.")

Subject: Radio Morals in the late 30s
Speaking about radio morals in the late 30s: I just recently watched the 1941
Paramount film, SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS.
It's the story of a Hollywood director (played by Joel McCrea), tired of
churning out lightweight comedies, and wants to make a serious, socially
responsible film about human suffering. After his producers point out that he
knows knowing of hardship, he hits the road as a hobo. Along the way he meets
the beautiful Veronica Lake and discovers that hardship comes when you're not
looking for it. And how people with hardship find escape in movies -- and
what they prefer to watch. A magnificent film but on top of that I realized a
bit of inside humor. In the beginning of the film, one of the producers kept
trying to convince McCrea to add a little sex in his next movie. No matter
what was proposed, it had to "have a little sex." They used the word quite
freely for what could have been substituted for "romance." But while McCrea
was a married man in the film, his relationship with Lake was VERY
interesting. They slept together (twice) and held hands throughout the film.
She groomed him, combed his hair, and yet, even at the end of the movie when
he learned he would not be married for long as his wife just got remarried,
thinking he was dead, he never once kisses Veronica Lake through the entire
movie! She doesn't kiss him! Ala, NO SEX. No smoochy smoochy.
What I question is whether or not the story was dramatized on radio. To my
knowledge, it never was as I cannot find it among the broadcast logs and
reference guides. If it was dramatized on radio, I would be curious to know
if they ever kissed during the radio adaptation. Anyone know if SULLIVAN'S
TRAVELS was ever adapted to radio?

Subject: Stars in Merchant Marine
In 1975 I interviewed Huntz Hall (of the Bowery Boys films) for about
an hour in his hotel room in St. Louis, where he was doing a stage
play in that region.
He told me that most of the boys in "his gang" were in their mid-20s
in 1942 when the draft intensified. (Leo Gorcey was the oldest at 25
that year; Bobby Jordan was the youngest at age 19.) Several of
them, including Hall, joined the Merchant Marines. I didn't pursue
the subject at the time, but he indicated it was not very restrictive
for them. He recalled he'd be serving in coastal Pacific waters for
perhaps 3-4 weeks and would get a week off to film another Bowery
Boys movie and then would then return to sea duty.
From October 1941 to October 1942 five new Bowery Boys films were
released; they were called "The East Side Kids" during WW II in
these Monogram movies produced by Sam Katzman.
I believe the only "Bowery Boy" to actually serve in combat was
Jordan, who served as a soldier in the 97th Infantry in Europe for
two years and was discharged in 1945.

Loyalty Oaths were required as late as 1963 for people entering state service
in Calif. I signed one then and it may have gone on longer.
A few months ago there was a mention of some of the old I love a Mystery
scripts being recorded. I think It was mentioned that the first one would be
presented at the OTR convention in (Puget Sound?) Wash. Is this a died issue
or is it still in the works?

Does anyone know if there is a book written about this series? I don't mean
a log such as the excellent one by Terry Salomonson. If there is no such
book, as there were over 800 episodes broadcast, of which over 700 are
available, it would seem that a book about this series would be very popular
and
a good seller. Perhaps someone will get around to writing it one day.
