Jan Bach admitted in his discussion of Roma Wine, the sponsor of
"Suspense",

that its consumption during an end-of-school-year party
laid my graduate school roommate and our two girl friends out on
the floor in a totally drunken stupor

Sounds like it would have been more appropriate for Roma to have sponsored
"Lights Out"!!

Subject: Re: Roma Wines -- an apology

Hello again --
My wife, who is far more sophisticated than I am where wines are concerned,
informs me that Roma Wines' Tawny Port should never have been drunk the way
my college friends and I did -- her father drank it as a dessert wine in
small amounts and never suffered the catastrophic results I described a
couple of days ago.
(The only link with OTR here is one correspondent's mention of Roma Wines a
couple of days ago as a sponsor of Suspense -- but I fear that now I am off
subject and so I won't be writing about this again! So it remains a mystery,
as far as I'm concerned, as to whatever happened to this "vintage.")

During the latest listing by Ron Sayles of Births & Deaths, I happen to
note the [removed]

09-11-1912 - Charles Stark - Reading, PA - d. 3-22-1992
announcer: "Gene Autry's Melody Ranch" .

This is not the first time, I have read where Charlie Stark has been given
credit as being Gene's announcer.
I'm not disagreeing with this, but would like clarification as to when this
took place. Perhaps, it occurred during the program's initial broadcast or
earliest beginnings in 1940? This is certainly not a big deal in the
grand scheme of things, but rather one of those little bitty annoyances in
life
 (laughing:-)
The only two announcers I'm familiar with and can find information to
support the claim as being "regulars" on Gene''s Melody Ranch were Charlie
Lyon
and Lou Crosby. Would appreciate your help.
Thanks
Joe Martelle

I'm getting together with a friend of mine who LOVES Sen. Claghorn from Fred
Allen, Frank Nelson from Jack Benny, and the Happy Postman from Burns &
Allen. If someone could do me up an hour's worth of some of just these scenes
for me on an audio cd, I'd GLADLY trade you some books for this delightful
thing! Email me offlist please! Thanks.
