Subject: RE: ET or Tape

Marty asked about the delivery of shows in the late '50s and
early '60s.

>From my own experience as a high school sophomore working at my
small hometown station in about 1961, on Sunday mornings we
played Here's to Veterans with Pat Boone as a transcription, but
by that time the ETs were no more than ordinary long-playing
33-1/3s. I can't remember the title of the show now, but we also
played a 15-minute drama hosted by Robert Young and sponsored by
the Episcopal Church - it came in on a 5-inch reel of tape.

The Southern Baptist Radio-TV Commission put out a 30-minute
weekly program, Master Control, on tape. Some time during the
1960s, they changed from using clear plastic reels to the dark
smoky ones. (Sort of the latest fad, you know how cameras and
electronics change from chrome to black to brushed whatever in
style over time.) Well, according to the marketing director at
the commission, the smoky reels became such a sexy, coveted item
around the radio stations that there was a drastic drop in tapes
that were being returned (despite the provided return postage).
He told me that he then went in search of a new supplier and
found one who manufactured the reels in sickly yellow and gray
with flecks of red - "like vomit" he said - and the return of the
shows shot back up. They later switched to LPs.

By the mid-60s in college and working for another radio station,
shows continued on tape and ETs (LPs). One of the latter was the
Marine Corps Reserves' well-done Spectrum in stereo, which from
year to year would adopt a theme - maybe a year (a la Garry Moore
and "That Wonderful Year"), specific events of American history,
national parks, etc., would be highlighted each week. Also at
that time, advertising agencies were still providing many of
their commercials on ET. But never in all that time did I play
any 16-inch transcriptions. There were some up in the "loft" at
the radio station - Eddy Arnold, Eddie Fisher's Coke Time,
Liberace. I never got a chance to listen to them. Another of
life's lost opportunities - but to tell the truth, I probably
wasn't all that interested back then.

Subject: Re: Gracie Allen for President

I found Gracie's 1940 book, "How to Become President," so devoid of
wit and charm that I once asked George--via his longtime secretary
Jack Langdon--if in fact it had been ghost-written. The response:
"You are quite right. It was written by several press agents of the
time. Actually, Gracie had nothing to do with it." But it was already
a rare book when I acquired it back in the late '60s or early '70s,
so I hung onto it.

Paul Henning's reminiscences of Gracie's creative contributions--and
George's backstage shenanigans--are included in my book, "The Laugh
Crafters: Comedy Writing in Radio & TV's Golden Age." Contact me

Many thanks to Melanie for pitching the Jack Benny 39-cent stamp to her
Representative! I'm sure that many of you have heard about the 39 Man March
that we have scheduled for Washington, DC on February 14 (if not, go to
[removed] and get the scoop). Even the Mayor of Waukegan will be
marching with us. In fact, we have a good number of people in both the
House and Senate that have expressed their support, and I am lining up
meetings with them for both the 13th and 14th. Jack has bipartisan appeal!

I'm also pushing hard to get "39 Forever" Volume 2 done in the near future.
One question that's come to mind is an occasional reference, I'm sure to
another show or ad. Sample exchange (made up, no direct quotes):

A: Hey, didn't you break into my house and burn it down?
B: Yes.
A: Do you think that was nice?
B: No.
A: Well, watch it next time.

Can anyone clue me in on the cross-reference of this exchange? It was done
on several shows and gets good reaction, so I'm sure there's a tie-in
somewhere.

There is a great difference between expressing your opinion, which we all
have a right to do; and arguing about and against someone else's opinion. I
hope we continue to express our opinions freely on this Digest, but you
cannot prove that someone else's "likes" are wrong. It is all a matter of
individual taste and choice. Therefore, when we use words like "better
medium" and "world's greatest entertainer", let's understand that it is just
a matter of unproveable conjecture.

Sadly, I'll bet a huge amount of transcription disks were used as fisbees.

...or perhaps there were orders on the label to either destroy them or send
them to a specific address. That's what I ran across in the 1980s (mostly
destroy them), and managed to save a couple of Jerry Lee Lewis concerts
(syndicated to country music stations) and an entire "American Top 40" with
Casey Kasem
(#1: "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis), all on vinyl, that were meant for the
same fate. I can imagine more than a few from the 1950s and early 1960s,
perhaps even older (historians?) were meant to be destroyed similarly.

And I'm betting radio stations that carried "Suspense," "Gunsmoke," "Yours
Truly, Johnny Dollar" and other shows either carried straight feeds from the
network or taped them for later broadcast then erased and reused the tapes.
I'm
told that's why it's so hard to find very many "Our Miss Brooks" shows from
later in the run ([removed]), or any "December Bride" shows at all.

I actually ran across some Chase and Sanborn coffee not long ago at a Walmart
Supercenter, of all places. Personally, I'm partial to the longtime Burns
and Allen sponsor, Maxwell House. Post Toasties were heavily advertised in
OTR
but not now, but I do seem them from time to time and as recently as today.

Lucky Strikes are still around, but I'm not so sure about Chesterfields. And
it's been awhile since I've run across Alpine, which had a commercial in a
1962 "Suspense" show I have somewhere. And I am told somewhere in Colorado
there's still an operating Rexall store, even though the Rexall signs I still
see
around here (in Alabama) are attached to vacant buildings and still displayed
just for old times' sake.
Perhaps some corporate merger could bring the name back like it apparently
did recently with Walgreen's, another name from out of the past (and OTR).

"missing" eps, unless one pops up in the last disc I
have to go -which is [removed] These AFRTS were done
contemporary to the show, not the later ones, and I
think AFRTS recorded their shows independently, so it
would be too much of a coincidence to have the same
shows missing. I'm pretty sure that research would
probably show that the show was pre-empted on those
two days. Is there any evidence that the two shows
were aired?

I just ordered Jim Cox's Mr. Keen book, and some RS CD
of the Month (about the only decent CDs RS did)
leftovers from Hamilton Books. I'm not a huge Keen
fan, but it was a great deal and Jim Cox did some
great research on the book. I'm looking forward to the
book.

On the flip side of Pter Chambers is FBI in Peace &
War. It would be great if somebody could do a book
with a log of that series. It's a really fun series
and I like it far better than This Is Your FBI.

[removed] Does anyone know what song was the theme of
Barrie Craig? I'm curious to know if a stereo
recording of it is available. It must have been a
popular song, I've even heard it on Australian shows.

Subject: Transcription disc or tape?

01-16-06

In volume 15, Marty asked, "I know that radio shows were sent to the
various radio stations via transcription discs. However, at the end,
late 1950's and early 1960's, was this still the practice or were the
shows sent to the radio stations on tape?"
I have a few 7-inch reel-to-reel [removed] ips tapes of "Gunsmoke" and "Yours
Truly, Johnny Dollar" that were super-high-fidelity studio tapes from WHP
AM Radio in Harrisburg, PA when theyw ere a CBS affiliate. They were
given to me by the son of a man who sold advertising for them. They were
represented to me as tapes the station received from the network for
broadcast use.
So ... if that representation was accurate, there was a period when
7-inch reels were the medium of transfer between network and radio
station. I don't know if they ever used telephopne-line downloads,
though, which probably would have been stored on tape at the other end.

Subject: Smart Set

Can anyone help?

My mother and her sisters made up a popular singing group called "The
Smart Set." They appeared on Radio shows such as Jack Benny, Alan young,
etc etc.

I have several old records from those shows. They apparently did
commercials as well as arranged songs with the band on the show. Do
you have any information about this group or where I could search??

They were 3 glamorous girls; Pat, Mike and Jerry along with a guy, Norm Berens,
who, I believe did most of their arranging. They did some traveling
and recording.

I would love to learn [removed]! I'd love to hear from you.

Mary
