Subject: Mrs. Peavy - not missing after all these years

Richard Carpenter (2005:4) suggests that Mrs. Peavy never appeared on
"The Great Gildersleeve."

I happened to have just listened to an episode the other day in which
she plays a small role, and of course she's even meeker than her
husband. Here's Dave Goldin's listing (from [removed]):

49697. The Great Gildersleeve. May 14, 1947. NBC net. Sponsored by:
Kraft Parkay (singing jingles), Pabst-Ett. Peavy has disappeared after a
meeting of The Jolly Boys. An interesting show in which Mrs. Peavy plays
an importantant role. Arthur Q. Bryan, Earle Ross, Harold Peary, Jack
Meakin (music), John Laing (announcer), John Whedon (writer), Ken
Christy, Louise Erickson, Richard LeGrand, Sam Moore (writer), Shirley
Mitchell (?), Walter Tetley. 29:28. Audio condition: Very good to
excellent. Complete.

Perhaps Bill H. was joking with "Buy Beer, Mr. Shane."
In case he wasn't, the Andrews Sisters were singing
"Bei mir, bist du schoen." With the last word spoken
in Low German. I grew up hearing this song and it
was many years before I found out what the girls were
saying. "By (with) me are you beautiful/lovely."

Subject: Re: Unheard characters

Hi

Can anybody tell me if "Sweety face" the wife of Walace Wimpo was ever
heard on FM&M? Part of the build up of the character was always the
McGees finding out what she did to them in a recent battle.
A good reliable OTR friend tells me that he thinks he's heard her
somewhere. He thinks it might have been in the 50s syndicated daily
shows because he thinks he'd heard her in original run. I've heard a lot
of the programs, and I don't recall her voice anywhere. Any help would
be appreciated.

Thanks much

I have the CCrane model, but perhaps need a mmore powerful one.

The CCrane FM transmitter is designed to comply with FCC part 15 rules
for low power transmitters, which allows it to be operated license free.
Any FM transmitter with more power will violate FCC rules, probably
cause interference to some FM station in your area and that could result
in a visit from the FCC. Try relocating the transmitter to different
areas to see if that improves the range.

Subject: Cinnamon Bear candies

I think there are a lot of references to cinnamon bears that are not
connected to the radio show. A few years ago, I was delighted to find at a
small candy store in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, bags of chewy, bear-shaped
candies labeled "Cinnamon Bears". Of course, I let my children try a bag.
Now I buy a couple of bags every year and pass them out to my third grade
students while we listen to the final episodes. I don't think they are made
with any regard to the radio show. Just the same, I'm glad they're still
available every Christmas. The name of the candy store, by the way, is
Beerntsen's. There aren't many stores like it anymore. Worth a visit if
you're in the area.

Subject: Mrs Peavey

Mrs Peavey put in at least one (very memorable) on-mike appearance: in
the episode from 05/14/47 (Peavey Goes Missing). She calls Gildy up in
the middle of the night to ask "Is Richard there?" Later she upbraids
the Jolly Boys when they come to visit her--she basically blames them
for him running away.

I don't know who played the old gal, but her voice was perfect for the
role--she sounded like dusty dried crackers crumbled over ice.

Mr. Peavey remained gone from the show for several weeks. I was curious
about that at the time--doe anybody know why? I thought perhaps Richard
Legrand had surgery or something. He was back before the end of the
season, as I recall.

I may be like Leonard Fass and find my memory isn't as accurate as I
think it is, but I seem to recall hearing Mrs Peavy one time. I don't
recall the date, sometime in the late '40s, and there was some sort of
social event everyone was attending and Gildy greets Mr and Mrs Peavy.
She had only a couple of words, I think, that was something like "hello
Mr Gildersleeve". The reason this sticks in my mind is because it was
so unusual.

Subject: Mrs. Peavy

Richard Carpenter mentioned Mrs. Peavy as another one of those characters
that were mentioned but never heard from on a radio show, in this case, the
"Great Gildersleeve." She actually does play a part during one episode (after
the war, I think, but during the Hal Peary years), when Peavy runs off and
his whereabouts are unknown.

I can say that after all of those shows I listened to Peavy talking about his
wife, it was disappointing to hear her talk. I guess I had an image of her
and the voice just did not fit my image. The funny thing is, after thinking
about it, her voice seems (seemed?) to be the female equivalent of Peavy's,
so my image was way off, I guess.

I suppose there is a danger in finally bringing in a character after years of
mentioning them. People are more than likely going to be disappointed.

If this is the question you're asking, ZONE'S "HH" is indeed based on
radio's; Serling adapted the Fletcher original. And though I yield to no one
in my admiration for Rod, the original's stronger. The obvious "a woman in
jeopardy is more interesting than a man" doesn't really apply here, as the
"jeopardy", and the antagonist, are ones that we ALL face.

I think the SUSPENSE version with Welles is a classic. And it's one of those

Ellen and I just got back from an 18 day trip to Israel. Arrived home at
about midnight last night, so I'm still a little tried from the long flight.

I only read the most recent issue of the digest, but happened to notice
that there was something about Rusty in Orchestraville. Years ago, I
converted the records that I had to tape and it appears in my radio
catalog. About 3 or 4 years ago, we started receiving letters and other
requests for the records to be placed on CD, so I re transferred them to CD.

Ellen scanned the cover and used it for the CD cover. A record company in
Canada found out about our disc and started sending people to us to
purchase it. When we contacted them they told us that we were the only
source for this record album. This was the start of our classic records to
CD collection.

To see this album and others check out our web site. [removed] Go to
the Classic Children's Records area. I think this link will get you
directly to it. [removed]

You can list to about a minute of each of the albums in the real audio format.

I have some scanned photos sent to me by Charlie's daughter, Marla Cantor
Slosberg. The photos are publicity photos she has titled as follows:

1. A formal press photo of the "Mighty Allen Art Players" approx 1934-1938"
with Cantor, Minerva Pious, John Brown and Eileen Douglas.
2. "The same group as #1 - same years. A gag photo of "who knows what".
3. "Washington Crossing the Delaware" approx 1940-1943 with Cantor,
Portland Hoffa, Al Goodman, Fred Allen, Minerva Pious, Kenny Baker and
Jimmy Wallington.
4. Charlie as "Finnegan" from Duffy's Tavern.
5. Colgate Comedy Hour - weekly sketch with Cantor and Cantor (Eddie and
Charlie)
6. Truth or Consequences
Plus one from a stage show.

Not sure if that helps answer your question.
