Subject: Old Time Radio in Maryland
I am dropping a note on the Digest for two reasons. One, the Mid-Atlantic
Nostalgia Convention is being held August 9 to 11 in Hunt Valley, Maryland.
If you cannot attend, Neal Ellis will be broadcasting over Radio Once More
([removed]) and many of the seminars will be broadcast "live" so
you can click a couple buttons and listen to the presentations, seminars and
panels. Attendance hit just under 1,500 people last year and pre-paid
attendance is up 202 people more than last year's pre-paid attendance so it
looks like the crowd will be our largest yet.
Our guest of honor is Jay Hickerson, co-founder of the Friends of Old-Time
Radio convention. The Gotham Radio Players will be performing a radio
re-creation of a "lost" MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER on Thursday and Don Ramlow will
present a "lost" HOPALONG CASSIDY radio drama on Friday afternoon. "Lost"
being defined here as original scripts from the 1940s pulled out of archives
to re-create because the recordings do not exist. The re-creations will allow
us to fill in the gaps so collectors can have something to enjoy.
Secondly, MANC has a charity auction to help benefit the St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital. Almost 100 percent of the money donated to St. Jude goes
directly to help children with cancer. We like to have the convention benefit
a good cause and last year we raised over $1,200 in less than 60 minutes!
We'd like to break that record. I think we can since we have received
autographed photos and books from such stars as Burt Reynolds, Rhonda
Fleming, Esther Williams, Ann Blyth, Jane Fonda and many others. (There are
photos of the items on the website of the items donated.) If you have any
collectibles sitting around you want to part with and donate, the address is
below. Or bring them to the show and place them on the auction table.
I apologize for being late with this posting but any items donated has to
arrive no later than Wednesday, August 8.
