The school I go to is on the top floor of a building
with a hand-operated elevator (although the operator
isn't uniformed). He let me work the elevator once.
The elevator's about 100 years old. They always
encourage us to take the stairs down to save wear and
tear on it. Awhile back, they tried letting the
students of the school run the elvevator to save the
operator some work, but then someone almost took the
elevator through the roof.

In response to the question below: If I can be pedantic, a radio signal
broadcast on April 13, 1934 would be 60 light years away from us at this
time ( about 352,439,398,100,000 miles) . Light and radio waves both
obey the "inverse-square law", which says that the intensity of the
light/signal diminishes (as it spreads out) according to the square of
the distance. The signals at this time would be indistinguishable from
the background "noise"/ electromagnetic radiation in space.
Rats.
Ah, but we _can_ extract radio signals from background noise, even if those
signals are far smaller than said background noise. The idea is to take
advantage of the fact that interstellar noise is random, but Chesterfield
advertisements are not. The extraction can be done with a statistical
analysis program, one of which is running on computers all over the world as
we speak. See if you can summon up the website for 'seti@home.'
They've probably accepted Dennis Day as one of their own out there.

Irene Heinstein asks:
Jack, in reading about your book online I learned about 'Phyl Coe'
from the Philco Radio Mystery program. I was able to obtain 12
episodes and was wondering if there is any way to find out the
solutions to the crimes!
Sorry, Irene, in the past 70 years OTR researchers have thus far been
unable to come up with confirmation on which clues led Phyl Coe to her
solution of each 15 minute mystery. Part of the problem was that since
these episodes were a contest for big cash prizes, no answers were ever
given in succeeding shows. Nor could they be, since they were all
recorded in advance.
I had hoped that the Philco dealers might have been advised of the
correct answers after the prizes were awarded, but so far I've not
found any dealer's magazines or bulletins that contained that missing
data from the mid-30s.
Of course, the biggest mystery about this show is who played Phyl? We
know the identify of many of the supporting cast, but our heroine is
still without a line in the credits. In the past five years, I've had
most of the people I know, who are great on "voice ID," listen to these
episodes, but so far, no luck.

Randy Story asks who will be at the Cincinnati Convention later this week.
I'll be there for the 11th year and I know of at least 30 others from this
Digest who will be there.
I'll be easy to find, I'll be wearing a button from the Metropolitan
Washington Old Time Radio Club (immediate past President for 11 years).
Normally I arrive on the midnight train early Thursday morning, but this time
I'm driving and will arrive at the Best Western at a more reasonable hour.

I was interested in Conrad Binyon's signature "Encino,
CA, Home of the Stars Who Loved Ranches and Farms."
I grew up in Encino (on Aldea Avenue, if that means
anything)and listened avidly to the dying days of OTR
in the mid 1950's. Too bad I moved away 40 years
ago!!! Also, I am regretting the move away from home
because of the SPERDVAC meetings I would now love to
attend, in North Hills. I guess that is near
Northridge, where I attended 2 years of college at San
Fernando Valley State College in Northridge (now a
part of the Univ. of Calif. university system). About
the only thing I can remember from those days is
listening to "Suspense" and "Johnny Dollar," the last
two network shows to air on CBS (before CBSRMT).

When I saw this subject:
Subject: Shows of 12/7/41
I thought to myself - I wonder if someone is starting to post all the shows
that were broadcast on that date. We have births and deaths on that date and
we also have OTR events in history on a certain date. Then I saw that the
date was not today's date and I realised that I was mistaken.
Does anyone know of a site that lists dates through the year and what shows
were broadcast on that date? I thought that it might be interesting.

Subject: Dec. 7 broadcasts
Re the 12-7-41 shows: it's important to remember the overall context. On
Sunday, the four major networks had hours of Pearl Harbor coverage, from
the first bulletins at 230p, through the afternoon and on into the evening.
The next day was much the same. From early morning through FDR's speech to
Congress and the aftermath of voting a declaration of war, there were more
hours of coverage on all networks.
So although the fun shows may have seemed excessively 'normal' they were,
in fact, probably a welcome relief from the many bulletins, commentaries
and special news programs that were being scheduled all around them for
those first two days, and the hundreds of wartime days to follow.
Listening to the Breakfast Club the next day, Monday, there was virtually
no mention of the events the previous day, but there were several breaks
for special reports, mostly from London. I was surprised at first to hear
Charles Collingwood's voice, as the Breakfast Club was an NBC show at the
time, but it became apparent that it was a pool feed.

Hi Gang:
After discovering a Dr. Seuss recording featuring the voice of the late
Mercedes McCambridge, Mike [smzmurphy@[removed]] asked
if anyone else has ever stumbled across some work by OTR stars in
unexpected places.
Well, I saw a "Leave It to Beaver" last night on TV Land where Beaver's
English teacher was played by Ed Prentiss of "Captain Midnight" fame
Ralph Bell was the one-time voice of the Groucho Marx-sounding cartoon
stork in the Vlasic Pickles TV ads.
Ronald Colman's voice--at least an impersonation of ot--lives on as the
voice of Toucan Sam in the Kellogg's Froot Loops ads.
Arnold Moss was the voice-over in the famous 1970s TV ads for Hebrew
National Frankfurters intoning "We answer to a Higher Authority."
"The Green Hornet" announcer Myron Wallace has changed gears and has
had a high-profile Sunday night network TV-news gig for about 35 years.
I'm sure this is the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
Yours in the ether!
Derek

I was just thinking last night, like Randy, that nobody has really mentioned
the convention this year. There's generally an atmosphere of excitement
around here as we gear up for another convention in any part of the country.
Perhaps this posting is too little too late, but I sure hope that people
aren't staying home this year. This *could* be the biggest Cincinnati
convention yet!
And congratulations to you, Randy. I look forward to talking with you this
year.

Subject: Pearl Harbor vs 9/11
The difference between the media's coverage of Pearl Harbor and 9/11, aside
from the technological capabilities, was the sense of national anticipation.
By December of 1941 the rest of the world had been engulfed in war for some
time. I believe the "normalcy" of the broadcasts were a reflection of the
thought, "Well, we're finally in it now." Even though one could argue that
the build-up to 9/11 started with Iran's Islamic revolution in 1979, we were
not a nation of good "dot-connectors," which made September attacks even
more surprising.

Laura Leff mentioned the difference in attitudes of performers on Dec 7,
1941 versus the extended coverage of 9/11.
I think one word covers it. TECHNOLOGY. In 1941 we waited a week or more
to see the moving images in our theaters
on Movietone news. On 9/11 many of us saw the second airplane hit the
tower via live coverage and then as more footage
became available saw it repeatedly. We were spared the horror of WWII
mainly because we were so separated from it.
Today we expect CNN and FOX to be there on the scene immediately so we can
see it all from our homes ad nauseam.
How many communications satellites and how many transistors and integrated
circuits existed in the products of 1940?
We can count em on the thumbs of our feet. During the 40's we ran around
participating in the war effort by collecting, saving
and rationing. Today we are war voyeurs.
