Jim,
Thanks for the info about Himan Brown's birthday. It is strange that
whenever I read about Brown, two of his NPR programs are seldom, if ever
mentioned. They [removed]
Americans all. NPR, 1985. Famous authors, politicians, and others, not
so famous. (I have 10 episodes.)
We, the people. NPR, 1986. Signers of the Constitution. (I have one
episode in 2 parts).
Are you familiar with these? I wonder if there are other collectors who
have any of these?

It was interesting that the latest messages included three of radio's
brightest stars who shared the painful history of being blacklisted because
their names appeared in Red Channels - Robert Louis Shayon, Joe Julian and
Himan Brown. They were the 'lucky' ones, eventually able to go on with their
chosen careers.
If anyone is interested in seeing the complete list here's the link to
Wikipedia where the list of 151 names appears (whatever your opinion or
conern about Wikipedia, I think you can trust this list compiled from all the
issues of Red Channels).

The idea of Norman Corwin being on the list is amazing considering he
presented some of the most memorable and patriotic programming of WWII.

Dear Howstean-
BBC7 Radio today aired a three hour special on Sherlock Holmes ...
the prize here is the 1945 recording starring Sir Cedric Hardwick as
Holmes & Finlay Currie as Dr. Watson
It was indeed of historical interest. But mercy, was it TURGID.
Pedantic adaptation and flat acting made it (except for one scene, that I
will not spoil for others who are yet to listen) a textbook example of what
people who think they dislike Radio Drama, dislike.
(And proof positive, if needed, that neither a Golden Age, nor a BBC,
pedigree guarantees sterling work.)
When you render one of the best stories in the Canon dreary, you have been
guilty of a crime indeed.
Best,
-Craig W.

Subject: Romance of Helen Trent, age 35
I've always wanted to point this out, so please bear with me:
Joe Mackey's ever-valuable Week In Radio History contained the
following observastion:
7/25
1933 - The first broadcast of The Romance of Helen Trent was heard. The
show continued on the air for 7,222 episodes and 27 years. Amazingly,
Helen stayed at 35 years of age throughout the entire series.
Helen was surely an inspiration to all those "who long to
[removed] because a woman is 35, AND MORE, romance in life need not
be [removed]"
But each of those 7,222 episodes lasted 15 minutes, which adds up to
1,805 1/2 hours. There are 8,760 hours in a year, which would give
35-year old Helen more than enough time for her romance and anything
else she needed to do. If you figure that the show was actually 14:30,
with a few minutes out to sell some Kolynos Tooth Powder there was no
way she could ever make it to 36.

Subject: Joe Julian
I was intrigued by Ken Greenwald's correspondence with the late actor Joe
Julian (whom I discuss in my book, WORDS AT WAR). As Ken Greenwald mentioned,
Julian was narrator for Norman Corwin's unusual series, an "American in
England."
Julian was one of a number of actors ([removed] including Art Carney) who got
their start in their profession by working on The March of Times series.
Years ago when I was researching my book, I interviewed Allan Sloane, one of
the writers for the great series, The Man Behind the Gun. Sloane and Julian
had been friends, and Sloane showed me a diary that Julian had kept during a
stint working on radio in Japan for a while after the conclusion of the war.
Julian was a fascinating character who seemed to pop up everywhere.

appeared on such radio shows as "The Rudy Vallee Show," and "The Alan

Los Angeles, the Ebony Showcase. His films include "Cabin in the

the '90s.

Movies Unlimited is listing a DVD of "The Goldbergs" TV show, with ten
episodes.
Can anyone tell me if this includes the program in which Arthur Godfrey
appeared, and opened with Molly looking out her window as usual, but talking
with Arthur Godfrey replying from a window across the airshaft?

Hi everyone -- long, long time subscriber, very infrequent [removed]
One of my all-time favorite series is the 1951 "Nero Wolfe," starring the
infamous Sydney Greenstreet, but I've always been baffled as to the selection
of the closing theme. Light, bouncy, more appropriate to a sitcom than a
murder mystery. I have heard the series on other, random NBC shows, which
added to my curiosity (although it does mean that the theme was some sort of
common "open source" music).
Today I was listening to the first episode of "It's Higgins, Sir," and --
surprise, surprise -- there's the music again. A lot more appropriate for
this series, but adds to my confusion -- especially considering that "Wolfe"
and "Higgins" aired around the same time.
My questions are twofold:
1. Can anyone identify the theme in question?
2. Was this a common practice for the era? I can understand reusing themes in
different shows, but two shows that may have aired simultaneously? Didn't
anyone find that unusual?
