Would anyone have a days broadcast from Nuremberg
Radio
during WWII. Its the sign on and off that I am
interested in.
I understand that at the end of the broadcast day a
song by the title of " At The End Of The Day " was
played. It would be interesting to hear that too.
I am NOT interested in The Nuremberg Trials, just any
days broadcast with sing on and sign off if possible.
Thanks
Pete

Our buddy Hal, actually, is one of a number of OTR performers who went the
same route: directed TV shows. "Vic and Sade" 's Bill Idelson, "The Bob Hope
Show" 's Hy Averback and Henry Aldrich himself, Ezra Stone, are among the
others.

Subject: Performers who went into politics

Doug Berryhill mentioned that Bud Abbott become mayor of a town in
California, and wondered if there were any other media performers who had
similar success after their careers had faded.

Well, how many of you remember that Andy Devine was mayor of Van Nuys,
California during his tenure as a semi-regular on The Jack Benny Program?

Then, of course, there as Sonny Bono, whose career in show biz was pretty
much gone when he became mayor of ... let's see ... wasn't it Beverly
Hills? Then, of course, he was a Congressman.

Jim Arva

Hi Anybody,
I recently had to call Fred Foy for his new address as I was going to send
him a copy of the events on video tape which happened at the "Lone Ranger Day"
at Mt. Carmel, IL. for the seventy year anniversary of the "Lone Ranger Show"
and [removed],Il. being the home town of Brace Beemer ("the" Lone Ranger) and
when Fred answered the phone said he wanted to tell me of him being awarded
the
"Golden Boots Award" to be presented to him in August later this year in
California. It couldn't be given to a more deserving person than Fred Foy.

    Congratulations, Fred!!
Till Next Time, Harold

Subject: Amateur Hour

A few days ago someone refrerred to the Original Amateur Hour. The Major
Bowes Amateur Hour on the networks was not the original. Before I joined
the technical staff of WHN in New York in the fall of 1936 Major Bowes
was the manager of the station and hosted the Original Amateur Hour
originating as I recall from the Lowes Ziegfield theater in New York
City. When he took his program to the networks the original amateur hour
stayed on WHN with J. C. Flippen replacing Major Bowes and was always
referred to as the "original". (my old friend Ray Saunders was the staff
announcer and friend Frank Anzelone was the engineer.) I do not recall
when it finally terminated.

There was a little sideline to the Major Bowes operation. The amateurs
were formed into units and booked into theaters. Before I went to New
York to work as a broadcast engineer (1935) I was working for a sound
company in Cleveland and travelled one stormy winter day to Ashtabula to
supply a sound system for the appearance of one of Bowe's troupes at a
theater. Apparently he formed groups of his amateurs and booked them into
theaters. A little known sideline.

For those who live in Seattle or the greater Seattle area and receive cable
TV from Comcast, old time radio programs can be heard 7 days a week from
6:00am to 8:00am. I receive the broadcasts on Scan-TV (channel 77) and are
intended primarily for the sight impaired.
