This information below is from Mary Lou Wallace. Charlie and I knew each

books including the first book about Fibber McGee and Molly

I am cogitating on the possibility of a summer reading program for kids
using a performance from OTR. Are there any suggestions from anyone who may
have done such a thing?
Also would be interested in ideas for script writting for radio of kids 7
and up. Would appreciate ideas on the list and off.

It's late and I'm too tired to check but wasn't THE STAN FREBERG SHOW
the initial replacement for THE JACK BENNY SHOW before the reruns?
I believe Stan Freberg was a summer replacement in 1957.
Despite the fact that the Jack Benny Program was in reruns, it still
went off for the summer and had a summer replacement, as was the
custom when the show was on with new episodes. I didn't even realize
that they were reruns at first. Eventually I realized they were
reruns when they did shows I had heard before. But I didn't really
realize that new episodes had ended in 1955 until Laura Leff told me
so.

Was: Re: The Secret Source of Colllyer's Secret Identity Myth?
Lance Grider wrote that John Dunning's "On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old
Time Radio" is "expensive and hard-to-find". Unless he was being sarcastic,
this certainly is not true. There currently are over 40 used and new copies
on Amazon starting at under $26 plus shipping, Amazon itself sells new copies
at under $51 including shipping, and the publisher currently sells it at $75
plus shipping, but often has it on sale at less than half price several times
a year. So don't worry, copies are neither expensive nor hard-to-find, but
you might want to take a gander at the listing of the copy an Amazon seller
is trying to sell at $[removed]!!!!!!!!! So if you don't have it yet, grab one
of the cheaper copies or keep a look out for the Oxford Univ Press sales.
You DO need to have it.

Those Phil Harris/Alice Faye episodes are now exclusively being relelased by
Radio Spirits from Alices's personal transcription discs. They recently put
out a new collection of 20 episodes, 19 of which have never been in
circulation. They will be releasing more of these.
Contrary to what we always believed, these shows are just as good, if not a
bit better than the Rexall shows. Great stuff.

Subject: Radio Spirits
This is in answer to two postings.
1. Radio Spirits released more than two new recordings for THE SHADOW set
they just came out with. While there are two new adventures we haven't heard,
there are a number of them that are uncut recordings where previous
recordings were edited or worse, Charles Michelson syndication with orchestra
music recordings substituting for the creepy organ music. There's more to
behold than the two episodes everyone is noticing. And upgrades are always
welcome.
2. Radio Spirits has agreements with an archive to put out (as long as the
box sets sell) all the Phil Harris and Alice Faye series and from an inside
source, they are complete with no missing episodes. They have been putting
the series out in chronological order and their recent set contained
primarily un-circulated recordings and they plan to continue. Which means as
long as they continue to sell they will put out another volume and those also
will be all-new, un-circulated episodes. If you love Phil Harris and Alice
Faye, I recommend you keep buying each set as it comes out -- we do want to
see them all come out eventually.

Subject: Syndicated Jack Benny
Joe Postove asked:
> OK, last question? Was the Jack Benny radio program ever syndicated
>nationally?
Charles Michaelson syndicated some rather poorly-edited Benny shows in
the 80s and 90s, and I suppose you could count "When Radio Was" since
they sometimes feature the Benny show. I don't think XM Radio counts,
since it's not syndication per se. As far as whether the shows were
syndicated "in their day", I'm not aware that was ever done. The
transcript audio copies of the shows were very limited, and only Jack
(and possibly American Tobacco) had a "complete set". --Laura Leff

As a huge Warner Brother's cartoon fan, I noticed that even when Arthur Q.
Bryan is present doing
the voice of Elmer Fudd, the only voice credit is "Voice Characterizations -

Any idea why only Mel was credited? Was it a union thing? Was Arthur
contractually bound to not have his
name on the cartoons?
There are several other instances of this, but the Elmer Fudd one is the most
related to OTR.

The Jack Benny Program was rebroadcast on WQXR, the NY Times Classical
Music Station (figure that out?) in the 80's. I think it was from 7:30 to
8:00
PM on Sundays. Because I worked evenings, I bought an obscenely expensive
clock timer so that I could record that and PHC.
Is this considered syndication?

Subject: Larry Gelbart and DUFFY'S TAVERN
No doubt by now people have posted obits for Larry Gelbart. Gelbart was
responsible for numerous scripts for such radio programs as DUFFY'S TAVERN,
THE SEALTEST VILLAGE STORE (the Jack Carson/Eve Arden series) and THE BOB
HOPE SHOW. He left Ed Gardner when he was offered a chance to write for Bob
Hope, and never regretted a minute of it. Ed Gardner, he told me, would often
fire writers when they asked for a raise and he said he was one of the lucky
ones that learned beforehand so he could remain employed.
Larry had an e-mail address and for the past year he and I chatted a good bit
about DUFFY'S TAVERN, one of the few radio comedies that I enjoy researching.
Some actors and writers shy away from their earlier efforts, others try to
forget the "radio days" but Larry loved talking about DUFFY'S TAVERN, the
guest stars he met at the studio, and recollecting the funny
behind-the-scenes stories. His memory was VERY sharp. One day he told me in
an e-mail that Mantan Moreland, the great African American comedian/actor,
played the role of Eddie for a lengthy period of time. Since he wasn't
responsible for scripting the first four years of the radio series, I
questioned whether he was accurate or started possessing faded memory. I
asked if he recalled exactly when the movie actor was playing a supporting,
recurring role on DUFFY'S TAVERN and he said it was after his tenure on the
program, when Ed Gardner produced the series in Puerto Rico.
As any true researcher, I kept this in the back of my mind but NEVER took it
as the gospel until I found something to verify this. (Actors, producers,
writers and directors can make a mistake in their recollections and to
reprint it without cross-checking isn't wise, especially if it might make the
interviewee look [removed])
Flash forward two weeks after his e-mail. I was at UCLA going through the
special collections and lo and behold I find scripts from Gelbart's years
(circa 1946-1948) and then scripts from another script writer during the
Puerto Rico years (1949-1951) and guess what? Mantan Moreland was listed on
the cover of MANY scripts. Seems during 1950, Moreland was playing the role
of Eddie for a time.
Larry's passing makes me wonder just what else he knew about such programs as
THE BOB HOPE SHOW and DUFFY'S TAVERN that has yet to be documented? And the
stories that he took with [removed]
