Subject: The Lane Family Tree
zbob asks:
I was just wondering if there was any relation between
Lois Lane and Margo Lane ????
First of all, it's Margot, with a "t". Secondly, there is no
significant relationship, other than they spelled their surnames the
same. (But then, so did Pee Wee King, Jean "Lonesome Gal" King, Sky
King, and the King Sisters.) And while eight different women portrayed
Margot Lane at the microphone, they did not include Joan Alexander, the
sole voice of Lois Lane on radio.
However, as I point out in my new book, "Private Eyelashes; Radio's
Lady Detectives", Margot had one big advantage over Lois, since the
former knew that The Shadow was also Lamont Cranston. In radio's crime
dramas, such privileged access was rare. After all, (despite their
suspicions) Lois did not know that Superman was also Clark Kent,
Mesquite Molly did not know that Steve Adams was Straight Arrow, nor
did Joan Mason know that Patrolman Dan Garrett was The Blue Beetle.

I don't mean to sound critical, because I think we all do the same tning --
ask a question on a list when answers can be found with a simple Google
query. The Two-Ton Baker reference is easy, but Paul Gibson wasn't quite as
popular outside thew Chicago area. I'm writing this to the entire list,
rather taan answering Ron directly, because many of us who grew up in the
Chicago area in the forties and fifties, listened to and thoroughly enjoyed
Baker's work, especially such songs as "I'm a Lonely Little Petunia in an
Onion Patch," and "Fuzzy-Wuzzy Was a Bear." Obviously, his material was
geared to kids, but was of such a high quality that he also appealed to many
adults. He easily made the transition to early television, and, if one does
a bit of digging around, 45 rpm recordings of his work are still available
from specialty dealers on the web.

Hi there Gang:
As per usual, I must commend Max Schmid and his "Golden Age of Radio"
programme (heard locally here in the NYC area on WBAI-FM) for his on-going
tribute to Ronald Reagan's brief forays into the world of OTR. However, I have
noticed that according to the Reagan guest-shots on "Burns & Allen" and the
"Kraft Music Hall" w/ Bing Crosby, that the prevailing preferred pronunciation
was REE-gan. My question is, when did the world decide to settle on calling
him RAY-gan?
Thank the ether for Jack French! Over the weekend, I encountered a
relatively new paperback titled HARDBOILED AND HIGH-HEELED: THE WOMAN
DETECTIVE IN POPULAR CULTURE by Linda Mizejewski courtesy of Routledge
publications [ISBN: 0415969719]. However, I passed up on purchasing it just by
virtue of what I couldn't find in this book's index. Yes, friends, "Candy
Matson" was conspicuously absent, as was an important word under the
R'[removed]"radio." Apparently, this book was in production at the same time of
Jack's PRIVATE EYELASHES and it's a shame that radio facet of popular culture
does not, on the surface, seem to play a part in what is supposed to be a
scholarly text.
I did check to see if "Honey West" was represented. She was. However, Ms.
Mizejewski seems to think Anne Francis's character was the first female TV
detective.
Remember those "history of soap operas" trade paperbacks back in the
1970s with subtitles like FROM MA PERKINS TO MARY HARTMAN. Nowadays, these
types of books (excepting Jim Cox's, of course) seem solely to focus on TV
soaps with a throwaway introductory paragraph which essentially amounts to "Oh
yeah, soaps started on radio."
What I'd like to know from my fellow Digesters is if anybody else out
there has ever been put off from buying (or otherwise acquiring) a book which
purported to encompass the broad field of "popular culture" but couldn't
bother to because radio was given the short shrift? I'd hate to think I'm the
only radio-elitist out here in the ether.
Shoveling off,
Derek Tague

Subject: Re: SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW
Martin Grams noted:
John Olsen reminded me of the up-coming black and white movie SKY CAPTAIN
AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW. This was supposed to be released in late June
but I recently heard that it has been pushed ahead to fall. Does anyone
know exactly when this is supposed to come out?
(If this question has been answered already, my apologies, I've been away.)
Current promotional materials at the film's website say "September 17", but
no release date three months out is ever set in stone.
SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW, incidentally, was filmed in black and
white and is supposed to be a reproduction of the old cliffhanger serials
that were featured in movie theaters years ago. The producer was unsure a
few months ago whether they were going to have the title card inserts
between each death-defying twenty-minutes or just let it run as one lengthy
movie, but it will be interesting to [removed]
First I've heard of the "title card" scenario, but the picture isn't really
in B/W; it's in a sort of washed-out but larger-than-life Deco-derived color,
similar to the sort of world suggested by the work of Alex Ross. This world,
outside of a few standard props (tables, chairs, counters and the like)
exists solely in CGI; nearly all of the film was shot on a white-backed
soundstage with the "world" added in post.
Amazing how much technical wizardry (and money) has to be employed to
simulate the effects that the prewar "Poverty Row" serials turned out for
next to nothing. (Of course, on radio, those "effects" wouldn't cost a dime.
:)

Actually, Martin, SKY CAPTAIN was not filmed in Black & White. It was
filmed in color then the effects were added in black and white and the
color restored to give a very dark, but color effect. It is attempting to
look something like the art deco thirties or what you might have seen at
the 1939 World's Fair. The process used was all Computer Graphics with the
actors working in front of blue screens. The CGI was actually written and
created mostly prior to the filming of the acting. It will be seen in
theaters on September 17 if the plan holds. That is the advertised date,
but as I understand it, the film is still being re-edited.
The film touts big name actors - Gynneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, and Jude
Law. The graphics really look fantastic and to me very reminiscent more of
some of the current graphic novels similar to Max Allen Collins "Road to
Perdition" for example.
The film plot is reminiscent of Superman versus the Atom Man with Nazi-like
scientists, mysterious women (Ala The Spider Lady) and characters with
comic style names - Polly Perkins, Chronicle reporter, Sky Captain, Frankie
Cook (a woman) and Dex, the nerdy fellow. And in terms of video of the
Fleischer Brothers Superman cartoons.
Odds are, if the film is reasonably good, it will still be a moderate
success but the process is so much CGI that the film is getting a lot of
buzz among film aficionados.
