Subject: It's That Time Again
Last night I settled into bed with the first story in Ben Ohmart's
delightful new book, "It's That Time Again". For those who haven't ordered
the book (you silly fools, you!) it is a series of stories based on the
characters and plots of many of OTR's greatest shows.
The first one is an "Our Miss Brooks" plot. As I read, I could hear Eve
Arden, Gale Gordon and Jane Morgan's voices saying the lines of Connie
Brooks, Osgood Conklin, and Mrs. Davis. Deja vu!
Some of the stories are of programs I am not familiar with, but expect them
to be equally gripping.
Despite the implication in the title, this is the first book like this that
Ben Ohmart edited. He also wrote one of the stories! He told me that he
hopes the book does so well that a second one will be in order, and
more. So do I!
Now for the fine print: My only interest in the book other than as a fan,
is that it does so well that a Baker's Dozen will follow. It's that
tasty! Put me on the list, Ben!

Subject: "The Automat" book
"The Automat, the History, Recipes, and Allure of Horn & Hardart's
Masterpiece,"
written by Lorraine Diehl (my wife) and Marianne Hardart (Hardart/
great-grandaughter)
is now in bookstores and also available by going to their website
[removed].
Site includes backround on the authors and some photos that are in the book.
Several pages talk about "The Horn and Hardart Children's Hour, and thanks to
OTR's Dave Siegel
I have a copy of two of those radio shows from the 1940's hosted by Ed
Herlihy. (Dave
an autographed copy will soon be on the way to you) Bernadette Peters who
Lorraine interviewed talks about her childhood days on the TV version of "The
Children's Hour." Anyone who remembers "The Automat," will enjoy this trip
back to an earlier time. "Candid Camera," did a piece at an Automat using a
string attached to a roll. And
available on DVD a "Honeymooner's" episode in which Ralph and Norton go to
an Automat thinking a thousand dollars is hidden in a sandwich. Woody Allen
shot a
scene at one of the last remaining Automat's for his film "Radio Days."
Currently
at The Museum of the City of New York, (103rd and Fifth Avenue) there is an
Automat exhibit which has just been extended to April of 2003. The book has
received lots
of attention, both in print and in the broadcast media including an
appearance by
Lorraine on NPR's "Talk of the Nation." So grab some nickels and pick up a
copy of
"The Automat." I think you'll enjoy it.

Liberty Broadcasting System
Dear Jim,
I found that KGFJ, 1230 on the dial, aired "Major League Baseball" Monday
through Friday at 10:55 AM starting March 12, 1951. KGFJ was an independent
station, but I believe that Liberty Broadcasting syndicated these
re-creations. The "Major League Baseball" broadcast data was in the LA Times
Radio Logs for March and April 1951. My research on this did not extend beyond
April. I believe these are the Gordon McClendon re-creations. I don't think
these were live games as they came on the same time Mon-Friday starting in
March for at least a month.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for that memory of Dwight Hauser, Harry Bartell. His son Wings
Hauser has been a prolific actor for many years, in films and TV, as well as
an occasional director.
Blacklist stories always make me sad. How easy some found it to ruin
people's lives and/or to be complicit in enforcing a blacklist because of
what they may or may not believe rather then what they have actually done.
I do know that George Reeves friendship with Dwight Hauser apparently
continued over the years because Hauser served as an honorary pallbearer at
Reeves' funeral.

It has arrived!! I will start reading it tonight and will stay away from

Yes Hal, we celebrate Christmas, in fact the day before you :) Because we
celebrate Christmas in Summer, the cold beer will be flowing and you can bet
it will be merry. A game of cricket for all the members of the family is
part of the celebration, usually 4 generations compete. If the beer really
flows then we will do our English Cricket team impersonations and collapse
early. What does it mean if an English Cricketer has 100 runs next to his
name? He is a bowler :) Threw that one in for the [removed] members of the
Digest. Will explain it to the rest of you on the irc.
Charles Kramer commented on the Six Shooter Theme "As you probably know,
there is at least one Six Shooter episode -- sorry, I forget which one --

didn't eventually make it to a [removed]"
Charles, the copy I have on mp3 came off a soundtrack/theme record used by
radio stations. Several times in the series the announcement was made
regarding the requests for copies of the soundtrack. It is by far my
favourite OTR theme. Certainly the emails asking for copies indicate that
it is a favourite for other members of the Digest.

Subject: AFRA and the blacklist
Regarding Howard Blue's comments about the "dark side" of Bud Collyer and
his role in supporting the blacklist: AFRA and Actor's Equity were polar
opposites with regard to the blacklist. Actor's Equity unequivocally
refused to "honor" the blacklist, even added an anti-blacklist clause to
their contracts while AFRA went so far as to threaten possible expulsion of
anyone who refused to cooperate with HUAC as Howard mentioned.
Actor John Randolph described how intimidating AFRA meetings had become with
people openly taking notes, writing down what people said and to whom they
said it.
I'm looking forward to reading Howard's book.

Blue network. Winchell kept that gossip show going on the radio for 23

It was a hit for Anton Karas in 1950, and covered by several other's

Subject: BBC radio shows (Was: Exotic location?)
David Rogers said:
On the point of OTR outside of North America, I am sometimes
disappointed that there is not more on UK radio shows. It is my
feeling radio is still very much alive in the UK and particularly
Radio 4 is still producing great stuff. If you go to the BBC web site,
I will second this. The BBC still produces some great audio drama. As
a fan of their TV show Doctor Who, I was delighted when they did a few
radio plays of the show in the nineties, starring some of the original
actors. Unfortunately, the writers (also veterans of the TV show) were
not familiar enough with radio to do a particularly good job. But hey!
The actors were still good!
However, the fans had been making audio dramas of their own 'episodes'
since the seventies and eighties (The TV show is a serial with fairly
low special effects, so there's actually an improvement in production
value by doing the show to be heard!) and passing them out on tapes.
One of these groups managed to persuade the BBC to sell them a license
and they went pro as Big Finish Productions. Big Finish has now done
hundreds of audio dramas on CD with a mix of original Doctor Who actors
and their own people. Some of them are really bizarre and original.
[removed]
But other fans continue to do dramas of their own, some of which are
even downloadable from the net.
[removed] -- "Fan Audio" is what you're looking for.
The BBC followed their lead, and for the last few months has had audio
adventures available on their site.
[removed]
This one, "Real Time", is just okay; but "Death Comes to Time", the
prior online audio, was very highly regarded indeed. (Although the
cheesy comics pictures they provide as part of the download I could do
without.)
There's supposed to be a new BBC station premiering soon -- BBC7.
Anyway, it will be playing a good number of popular audio dramas from
the past as part of its programming.

Subject: Burns & Benny on Bravo!
Jell-O again, fellow ether-ites,
I just wanted to highly recommend a documentary airing tonight (12/04)
on the cathode-ray cable network Bray-vo. It's called "Smothered: The
Censorship Battles of 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.'" The title is
self-explanatory, so I won't bore anybody w/ too many incidentals. I saw a
sneak-preview last night at NYC's Museum of Television & Radio attended by Tom
and Dick Smothers as well as the documentarian herself, Maureen Muldaur. [I
had to keep reminding myself that it was MAUREEN, and not MARIA Muldaur of
"Midnight at the Oasis" fame].
Anyway, here's the OTR connection: near the beginning, the Smotherses
speak briefly about idolizing radio performers such as Jack Benny and George
Burns, which, in turn, is followed by some well-crafted schtick from 1967 in
which Messrs. Kubelski and Birnbaum portray an older version of Tom and Dick.
WARNING to all you fellow Digest-ers who look down on t--------n: it
truly is a worthwhile [removed]'t turn it off after the Jack Benny
segment. Remember, too, that Smothers' regular Bob Einstein ([removed]
"Super" Dave Osborne) is the son of radio comedian Harry "Parkyakarkus"
Einstein. Bob is aptly represented even though no mention of his famous father
is mentioned.
Yours in the ether,
That Derek
