To the person whose tape deck is eating tapes. Look closley at the rubber
drive wheel. It will look shiny and and glazed. This causes the tape to
slip and
pull out. Take a toothbrush and alcohol and scrub the wheel until it is clean
and dull looking. Very fine sandpaper and alcohol works even better. Once
clean the tape deck should work OK. This is a common problem when the deck is
used a lot. Good Luck

befriended on movie sets
Webb hired X-wives and their husbands too.
One Jack Webb production on another medium was EMERGENCY. Julie London,
Webb's X, was nurse Dixie McCall and Bobby Troup, her then husband, was one
of the DRs ... Joe Early. In addition, Troup played various parts on tube
version of Dragnet.
Also, Barry "Greg Brady" Williams writes of Webb in his book "Growing Up
Brady". Williams tells that Webb most definitely hired the same actors
over and over so long as they performed well ... Williams appeared on
several episodes of Dragnet ... on another medium.

Subject: OTR show
Years ago I heard an OTR broadcast on radio on Hallowe'en night.
The story line was about a man who had to stay in an old house to win a bet.
But there was some thing in the house that turned people inside out.
The climax of the show was punctuated by a loud slurping sound and the
muffled scream of our hero shouting "It's turning me inside out!"
Is anyone familiar with this storyline, and can they identify the show?
Your help will be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Milwaukee's own Ron Sayles posted in his daily birthday list:
06-22-1932 - Prunella Scales - Sutton Abinger, Surrey, England
actress: Sybil Fawlty "Fawlty Towers"
I have often seen audio-versions of "Fawlty Towers" available in the
audio-book
section of major national book-store chains, but I had always thought they
were
audio versions of the TV series. Therefore, my question is: were the 12
episodes
of "Fawlty" later adapted for the radio? My guess is that it probably was,
being
that we all know how ether-centric inclusion into Prof. Sayles's list is.
Therefore,
which came first: "Fawlty Towers" on TV or on radio?
"I speak English well. I learn it from a book."

Subject: Spruce Goose [removed] radio recording??
Hi there!
I got this request the other day from an associate producer for a History
Channel series. She is trying to see if there is an existing recording made
by KLAC radio in Los Angeles of a program on Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose
flight of 1947. I'm not an expert on old radio recordings and I certainly
have no idea even if KLAC recorded this event. Maybe someone out there can
help out and answer this woman, here is her request below.
Thanks.
Jim
My name is Elizabeth Arthur and I am an Associate Producer for a new History
Channel series "Man, Moment, Machine." Ernie Kristof at KFI gave me your
contact information to see if you could shine a light or at least point me
in the right direction.
One of our episodes focuses on Howard Hughes and the flight of the Spruce
Goose on November 7, 1947. We understand that KLAC aired a radio address on
that day on this flight. I have been searching for a copy of the audio as
well as who holds the license to this. Unfortunately, I have been coming up
empty. Would you know where to look for this?
Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Listened to them today and was delighted. However, unless I'm going to spend
all day every day listening, I'd like to know if they ever list which
episodes they'll be playing of each show each day. Some shows (I'm thinking
particularly of CBS Radio Mystery Theater) were tremendously variable in
quality, and while I love OTR I can't spend all day every day with it. If I
knew they were going to air (is that the right verb anymore?) one of the
Inner Sanctums listed here as "scariest" I'd make a point of listening.

Subject: Academy Awards Show 1956 / Arlene
Francis OTR
Does anyone out there have a copy of the Academy
Awards show that was broadcast on 3/21/56? Jim Backus
hosted the radio broadcast while Jerry Lewis hosted
the actual show. I have this in my collection, but I
moved last summer and I just cannot locate the tape. A
friend is doing some research and needs this
particular show for something he is working on. Any
format will do, CD, MP3, cassette, or reel and I will
happily reimburse all expenses. I'd offer a trade, but
my collection is just too much of a mess to suggest
that right now. I really hope someone can help me with
this for my friend.
Also can anyone recommend a dealer who has OTR shows
featuring Arlene Francis? Another friend is a huge fan
of the TV version of What's My Line and he is now
digging into OTR for Arlene Francis, John Daly, and
Dorothy Kilgallen OTR. I've supplied him with the
reels I had of Breakfast with Dorothy and Dick(which
Fred Berney is now transferring to audio CD's for
him), and he's found Daly news stuff, but almost
nothing with Arlene Francis.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

> Lady Esther Presents Orson Welles 12-22-41 "The Happy Prince" I have
a copy of an Orson Welles Theater broadcast entitled "Christmas Show;
St Luke Chapter 2 with the same date 12-22-41. It doesn't seem likely
to me that both these shows were broadcasted the same night. Can
anybody shed light on this mystery?
I have not actually heard this episode but, according to the Lady
Esther series log over at [removed], the 22 December 1941
broadcast included both "The Happy Prince" and a "reading from Gospel
of St. Luke." I guess Welles read the Nativity story from Luke 2,
which is a relatively short piece. Come to think of it, Reginald
Fessenden apparently read it during his brief Christmas Eve 1906
broadcast -- which I suppose would make it one of the earliest
dramatic readings on radio, maybe the very first.
Anyway, the Lady Esther log is here:

Paladin's (of _Have Gun, Will Travel_) first name was
not "Wire." The statement "Wire Paladin" on his
business card referred to how he could be contacted-
by (telegraph) wire.
As far as I know, his first name was never revealed
(unless you want to go with "Mister.")
For that matter, since the word "Paladin" refers to a
defender of a noble cause, it's possible that wasn't
his real last name, either (leaving aside, of course,
the probability that the writers gave him that name
_as a name_ because of its associations).
But his first name was definitely _not_ "Wire."

Mike asks the meaning of the word 'Gaiters' in the title of the BBC series
"All Gas and Gaiters", As most people here in England will tell you, a
'Gaiter'
is a covering for the lower leg and ankle, usually fitting down upon the
shoe. It was particularly worn by members of the clergy who were, of
course, the
subject of the series. According to my dictionary, it comes from the French
word 'guetre' (that should have a circumflex accent over the first 'e').
