Subject: Candy Matson in Reno
Kathy Hammel, an indefatigable OTR researcher from Sherman Oaks, CA,
continues to make great strides in her uncovering of the personal history of
Natalie Park, the voice of "Candy Masters." Neither Natalie, nor her second
husband, Montgomery "Monty" Masters (AKA Mohn) ever talked much about their
first marriages.
Kathy learned years ago from Natalie's Last Will and Testament that her first
husband was Paul Melvin Vickland. After more digging, she came up with the
California divorce degree of January 1943 but it had no mention of where or
when they were married, as the official file had long ago been stripped.
Her investigation continued and Kathy recently came up with a 1940 California
news clipping indicating that San Francisco residents Vickland (an announcer)
and Park (actress) had just returned from their marriage ceremony in Reno,
NV. Unfortunately for researchers, Nevada does not have past-year marriage
licenses retrievable on the internet. So Kathy planned this summer's vacation
to include Reno and there she struck pay dirt.
Their license from Washoe County, NV certifies that Natalie M. Park and Paul
M. Vickland were married in Reno on January 3, 1940, a Presbyterian minister,
the Rev. William Moll Case, presiding. Witnesses were Mira T. Beurhand and
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Vickland.
Kathy Hammel now has a copy of that marriage license. The complete saga of
Vickland and Natalie will appear in an article Kathy has written for the
August 2014 issue of RADIO RECALL to be entitled "The Detective and the
Baritone." Don't miss it!

Subject: Bob Hastings
Like a lot of folks, I was terribly saddened to hear about the passing of Bob
Hastings. He was a funny, energetic, talented man and I had the great fortune
to speak with him about his career for our "Nostalgia Digest" back in 2008.
That issue of the Digest has long sold out but you can read the article at
