The scarlet tunics seemed to blaze in the orange light of the
setting sun, and even the horses held their head high, as if they,
too, felt the glory of victory.

According to Jim Harmon's =The Great Radio Heros=, this was not a
radio show but a phonograph record offered as a premium by Quaker
Puffed Wheat.

Subject: Re: Mel and Spike

According to the inhabitants of the 78-L, Mel is credited as co-writer
of the song ["Ugga Ugga Boo Ugga Boo Boo Ugga"]. Eddie Maxwell and
Irving Miller are credited as co-authors with Mel in the ASCAP Directory,
but the record label credits "Miller-Cherkose-Blanc-Benoff". Perhaps
some of these are the names of writers of The Mel Blanc Show. The vocal
credit on the record is to Ding [removed]

Mel Blanc had nothing to do with the song, according to Eddie
Maxwell. "Cherkose" was Maxwell's real surname; "Benoff" is Mac
Benoff, who was indeed a writer for the Blanc show.

"Ding Bell" was the stage name of Eugene Walla, a singer-sax player
briefly with Spike.

Subject: Easter programs

In answer to Bob Cockrum's request, I can think of at least one solid
Easter-related program: "The Son of Man" from the CBS Radio Workshop
(4-21-57), in which the story of The Passion (taken from the four Gospels) is
read by Herbert Marshall, Vincent Price, Victor Jory and Robert Young. As it
happens, I'll be playing it on this Saturday's broadcast of "Those Were the
Days" as part of our "East is Easter, West is Western" show (available online
at [removed]).

Subject: Myrt and Marge movie poster

I just spent a good bit of money to have a pristine print of MYRT AND MARGE,
a 1934 Universal movie based on the radio program of the same name. (and I
mean it's remastered from a 35mm master so it looks like it was filmed
yesterday!) In trying to design a DVD case for my bookshelf, I cannot find an
image of a poster for the movie. Does anyone have a movie poster image for
the film?

Subject: Easter show

Bob Cockrum asked about great Easter shows. There's an amazing episode
of QUIET PLEASE that combines Easter and Passover in one story. It's
called "Shadow of the Wings", in which a little girl who is dying is
visited by the Angel of Death.
It's a beautiful and moving story, one of writer Wyllis Cooper's best.
Original broadcast date is April 19, 1949 on ABC.

Subject: Newest issue of RADIO RECALL

The April 2010 issue of RADIO RECALL just went out to our electronic
subscribers and the hard-copy version will be mailed to our other
subscribers around April 11th.

This issue leads off with a scholarly piece, "OTR In Japan" by Dr.
Yamashita Moriyuki which discusses the history of Japanese radio
programming through WW II. Another article by Brian Rogers explains
how the term 'news roundup" first entered broadcasting in March 1938,
compliments of CBS.

Designated as our "Book Review Issue," it includes reviews of six new
books and one old classic. Arizona reviewer Jim Snyder discusses
Robert Mott's newest book, "The Audio Theatre Guide," a history of
sound effects. The new three-volume set of "The 'Who Is Johnny
Dollar?' Matter" is reviewed by the well-known OTR collector and
researcher, Joe Webb. Two other Bear Manor Media recent releases,
both on Fibber McGee & Molly (one by Mickey Smith and the other by
Clair Schulz) are discussed by the reviewer team of David Siegel and
the editor. And to round out the book reviews, we reach back for one
in 1937, "The Bobbsey Twins in a Radio Play."

This issue also contains a brief history of Dan Reid, in his post-
Lone Ranger days, that provides at least one surprise. The obituary
page contains tributes to two great OTR authors who recently died:
Jim Harmon and Ron Lackmann.
