From Those Were The Days
10/14
1934 Folks had clean hands for 21 years beginning this day. The Lux
Radio Theater was heard on the NBC Blue [removed] and nearly every
famous Hollywood star over the next three decades appeared on the
program. Lux Radio Theater adapted novels, Broadway plays and Hollywood
films into radio's favorite dramatic series.
From NYT Today in history
In 1943, the Radio Corporation of America completed sale of the NBC Blue
network to businessman Edward J. Noble for $8 million; ($99,733,889 in
2010 dollars) the network was renamed the American Broadcasting Company.
10/16
1939 Radio listeners welcomed The Right to Happiness on the NBC Blue
network. The 15minute drama turned out to be one of the longestrunning
shows of its kind. It moved over to CBS in 1941, then back to NBC in
1942. Fourteen years later Right to Happiness returned to CBS where it
stayed until its last days in 1960. The show had a theme song, Song of
the Soul, and what seemed like a cast of thousands. It just took a lot
of different actors to play the continuing roles over a 21year period.
1945 Barry Fitzgerald starred as Judge Barnard Fitz in His Honor, the
Barber, which debuted on NBC.
10/17
1919 The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) was formed.
1938 This was a big day in Tinseltown. NBC moved to the corner of
Sunset and Vine, the 'Crossroads of the World'. The new Hollywood Radio
City drew thousands of visitors ready to fill studioaudience seats for
popular radio programs.
1938 Captain Midnight was heard on radio for the first time, on
Mutual. The Captain flew his singleengine plane all over the place
fighting crime.
10/18
1922 As the British observed the wild growth of radio in the [removed],
they realized the potential of broadcasting in their own country, as
well as the need for its regulation. The British Broadcasting
Corporation (BBC) was established on this day to monitor the development
of the radio biz in Great Britain.
1943 The first broadcast of Perry Mason was presented on CBS. In the
15 minute (Monday- Friday) shows, Perry was played by Barlett Robinson,
Santos Ortega, Donald Briggs and John Larkin.
10/19
1937 "The freedom of the press is a flaming sword. Use it justly, hold
it high, guard it well." The radio classic, Big Town, made its debut on
CBS radio. Star reporters at the Illustrated Press, Steve Wilson and
Lorelei Kilbourne, were played by Edward G. Robinson and Claire Trevor.
Tell the Story was the theme song. Sponsors included Ironized Yeast
tablets and Lifebuoy soap.
10/20
1930 - One of the most memorable of all radio shows, "The Adventures of
Sherlock Holmes", was first heard on the NBC Red network. Its debut
entry, "The Speckled Band", featured William Gillette in the role of the
famous detective. Gillette introduced Holmes to New York audiences as
early as 1899 ... on the stage, not the radio, of course.
1932 - Journalist Robert Trout joined CBS. Trout became a household name
to CBS listeners -- and they later became loyal viewers of Trout on CBS-TV.

CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 49
EDDIE HUBBARD & THE BROWSERS: "MILKMAN, KEEP THOSE BOTTLES QUIET"
Ella Mae Morse was born in 1924 in Mansfield, TX, about 20 minutes from
my house in Arlington, TX. She thought she hit the big time when Jimmy
Dorsey, believing she was 19, hired her at her true age of 14. Jimmy
soon fired her when he discovered he would be responsible for her care.
At 17 she did indeed hit big band renown when Freddie Slack signed her,
and she recorded hits like "Cow Cow Boogie" in 1943 and in the same year
a song that we'll hear on this "Browsers" show from 1998: "Milkman, Keep
Those Bottles Quiet." As with Frankie Laine, many who first heard her
early recordings thought she was a black artist because of her "hip"
style and song choices. She may not be as famous to some as Dinah Shore
or Connie Francis, perhaps because of early retirement or because of her
versatility as she sang jazz, blues, boogie, jive, country and gospel,
but she is tops in my songbook.
Other artists on this edition are Johnny Ray, Les Paul and Mary Ford,
Tony Pastor and Ruth McCullough, Eddie Fisher, Dick Todd, Pearl Bailey,
Connie Francis, Billy Eckstein, Muggsy Spanier, Benny Goodman, Jimmy
Dorsey, and Russ Morgan. Some featured recordings include "Mention My
Name in Sheboygan," "Skylark," "I Get Along Without You Very Well,"
"Riverboat Shuffle," "Indian Love Call," "I'm a Fool to Care,"
"Sunflower," "Outside of That I Love You," "When I Was Young," and
"You're a Sweetheart."
"Bell Bottom Trousers" from 1945 begins this session of "Eddie Hubbard &
the Browsers," and composer Bert Kaempfert's "Maltese Melody" closes it.
In between, the Browsers try to stump each other with questions
involving things like a law suit relating to the song "Sunflower," the
entertainer who discovered Eddie Fisher, the connection between Jimmy
Dorsey's "Oodles of Noodles" and "Contrasts," songs with birds mentioned
in the title, how Mary Ford managed multiple tracks of voicing during
live performances without studio enhancement, the actress who sang
"Milkman, Keep Those Bottles Quiet" in the 1944 movie "Broadway Rhythm,"
and "Phil's Phooler."
As we go to our show, a final comment: Today we, of course, no longer
hear those long-gone noisy milk bottles. Sadly today it's more like a
bombardment of noises that may for a time drown out the soft, sweet, and
inspiring music of life, but isn't it wonderful that we still have the
blessing of music from "milk bottle days" to bring us joy, and that even
God is rejoicing over us with singing! (Zeph. 3:17) So with some songs
from those milk bottle days here are "Eddie Hubbard and the Browsers."
Enjoy and, as Red Skeleton used to say, may God bless!
Many thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting the original
Eddie Hubbard studio tape for highest quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time
Episode 5
In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"
