COLUMBIA WORKSHOP

THE PHIL HARRIS ALICE FAYE SHOW
from 11/25/51. The show plot deals with Indians Don't Pay Income Taxes.
After our look at the OTR community calendar we spend time with Jay
Hickerson who has run the Friends Of Old Time Radio Convention since
1976. This will be the last convention of FOTR and we chat about his
beginnings as a radio collector, plus the convention, his books and more.
Recently we lost Dolores Hope, fine singer and wife of the Late Bob
Hope who died in 2003.
In 1994 Eddie Hubbard spoke with both Bob and Dolores Hope and we'll
hear that phone call from 10/25/94.
We also lost a friend and a fine sound engineer who worked for Capital
Records for many years. Jay Ranellucci was the engineer on the
commercial Stan Freberg made about Radio. We'll hear how they made that
commercial in the remaining minutes of Same Time, Same Station.

As aside to Charlie that I'll just put out there to the general

You've traced the first CBS News Roundup, and you posted a link to a
service accessible by Android. This actually reminds me that today's CBS
Radio is very active online, on all the major social media. CBS News
issues Twitter alerts to stories they cover in upcoming newscasts, and
their Facebook page has in-depth participatory discussions+ADs but also the
newscasters and producers themselves are active, talking about stories
they're covering - Peter King on his space beat, Mark Knoller on his
White House beat, and so forth - with background observations on the
conditions surrounding them at the moment.
The Golden Age of Radio may be over, but I do like to point out that
today we live in a Golden Age of connectivity, where we have instant
access to many present-day personnel of what remains of Network Radio in
America - CBS, NPR, and to a lesser extent ABC and PRI. My children
already take this for granted, while I regard it as some sort of
awe-inspiring magic.
I now return you to your lighted dial and the glowing hum of vacuum
tubes. :)

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Hello, friends.
I am getting back on board the digest with the writing of this message after
an absence of some time.
I now live in the Baltimore area with my lovely wife and I am hoping to
reconnect with my OTR buddies. I had a chance to see some of you at the
Mid-Atlantic Nostaglia Convention a few weeks back(a GREAT TIME by the way)
and it made me realize how much I miss the hobby.
On to my question!
Is there an OTR group in my area? As I said I live in the Baltimore area and I
was hoping there was a fan group that met nearby. I know that at least one fan
lives in my immediate area because I keep seeing BearManor Media books turning
up at my local used book store :-) Can anyone help me out with this query,
please?
Thanks,
Randy Story
(Who is about to introduce a new baby daughter to the hobby in late January
when she arrives)!
*** This message was altered by the server, and may not appear ***
*** as the sender intended. ***
[ADMINISTRIVIA: Actually, we're going to do this an entirely different way. I
am calling on ALL Old-Time Radio clubs, from the largest California-based
club (winks to left-coast friends) to the smallest
meet-in-a-diner-for-breakfast groups to send in a short description of your
group, complete with location, meeting info, and pointers to web pages et al
for additional information. I am going to hold them out of the "regular"
Digest, gather them all together, and release a special Digest issue with OTR
club info - that way, everyone hopefully can find like-minded folks in their
neighborhoods (or at least hopefully states), and clubs can get ther word out
about who they are.
If you are a member of any OTR club across the country, make sure your
leadership knows about this and submits a short post about your group. (I'd
appreciate it if there were one submission per group, instead of having every
member of every group send one. I [removed]!) If submissions get here in
time, I'll run the issue before the upcoming FOTR Convention; if they're
still arriving, I'll wait until afterwards to send out the compilation.
