Subject: Blissful thinking?

In his book "This Was Radio: A Personal Memoir" (Viking, 1975), actor
Joseph Julian waxes poetically over The CBS Radio Mystery Theater which was
suddenly giving him and many others both in and out of the industry great
hope for the future.

Speaking of the "enormous" response to the new Himan Brown audio feature,
Julian explains: "It gave major impetus to the upswing now in the making.
Love stories, soap operas, and westerns are being planned. Rod Serling
began hosting the Hollywood Radio Mystery Theater, produced on the West
Coast and syndicated across the country. The FM Stations (the Off-Broadway
of radio) are already carrying a number of new programs such as the National
Lampoon Radio Hour, with sketches more daringly satirical than anything in
the past, and heard on over 100 stations. An all-black soap opera is in
production."

Aside from The General Mills Radio Adventure Theater (1977-78), The
Sears/Mutual Radio Theater (1979-80), and a handful of black-produced soap
operas in the 1950s (at least two decades before this), I'm unaware of any
of Julian's projections turning into realities post 1975. Did they? I'd
like to think I missed them and they are currently circulating on tape,
other recordings or are downloadable. Does anybody know? And if it didn't
happen ... what happened to prevent it? Was he merely living in a million
could-be years on a thousand may-be worlds?

I can speak about the American Radio Theater and the Gildersleeve Project.

ART is based in Seattle, and has the goal of recreating/recording
Old-time-radio shows that no longer have audio recordings from the original broadcast.
In addition to that, we encourage new writers of audio drama by performing
their radio plays, and recording them. We can be heard on Sundays on the Radio
Entertainment Network (_[removed]_ ([removed]) ), and
sometimes in the audio chatroom on Thursdays, 5 pm pacific, at
_[removed]_ ([removed]) . A few of our recordings
can be found at _[removed]_ ([removed]) .

Our web-site is _[removed]_
([removed])

The Gildersleeve Project comes out of Lexington, KY. Mike Wheeler, of
_[removed]_ ([removed]) , has a goal of recording the 25 missing
Great Gildersleeve shows, the ones from 1941-2. The original recordings had
been on glass disks, which got broken somewhere along the line, and the
recordings lost. He has gathered together an ensemble of actors, and has completed
five of them so far.

Here's the link to a group out of the Chicago area. Found out about them
late last year and am attempting to make their May 14th show:

Subject: Big Town, radio theme

I came across a musical piece composed by Rene Garriguenc, entitled "Traffic"
but listed as "[removed] Big Town." I was always under the assumption that the
theme song for BIG TOWN was "Tell the Story" but it's possible the show had
two themes and I was unaware of this. I was wondering if Garriguenc composed
the theme for the radio program BIG TOWN, or if the song is a coincidence.
Anyone able to help?

Clarifying a radio program's origin. Commercial advertises Templeton
Cigarettes and doing a Google (yikes!) I came across a photo of a pack of
Templetons from Germany, but the actors on the recording do not sound German.
It's from the 1950s and that's all I have to go on.

Can anyone help fill me in who was Templeton and if they were sold here in
the States or not?

I'm seeking specific birth/death info on prolific radio actress Florence
Williams. Can anybody supply any part of the data, or point me to a source
I might have overlooked? I believe her to have been born in 1910 in St.
Louis and to have died in 1994 but can't guarantee authenticity of that yet.
I'm seeking specific dates and her place of death. Any help directly to me
will be sincerely appreciated and earn a mention in the credits of an

but it might be helpful to others to know
that the shows are supposed to be from 1940, because that is the year
the old man wishes to return to. Whether or not the producers of the
Twilight Zone were set enough on accuracy to use only 1940 recordings
is not something that I know.

I seem to recall the Fred Allen clip depicting a trip to "Allen's Alley," so
no, I don't think they necessarily chose 1940 clips. I don't believe "Allen's
Alley" came around until a few years later.

1933 Comedian Phil Baker was heard on network radio for the first
time when The Armour Jester was heard on the Blue network. ...

I don't think this is literally true. Baker had been appearing as an
occasional guest on network radio for several years before this. In
fact, by the fall of 1930, he had a twice-weekly CBS series called
"Going Places," sponsored by Sinclair Oil.
