Posterization

Gallery

Here are examples of posterizations I have done using the methods described.

Rudesheim (late-1970s)
black and white photographic paper

This was probably the first posterization that I did. It was before I had a registration system figured out and I just manually aligned the negatives and positives and taped them together. This is an image from Germany.

Dog (1980)
color photographic paper

The original image was shot on 35mm black and white film. After creating the tonal filters, I printed them on color enlarging paper using color "cut-off" filters to create the colors.

Dog (1980)
Cibachrome print

The original image was shot on 35mm black and white film. After creating the tonal filters, I printed them on Cibachrome enlarging paper using color "cut-off" filters to create the colors.

Prison (1980)
color photograph

The original image was shot on color slide film at a prison museum in New Jersey. After creating the tonal filters, I printed them on color enlarging paper using color "cut-off" filters.

Branch (1980)
color photograph

After creating the tonal filters, I printed them on color enlarging paper using color "cut-off" filters.

Counterweights (1980)
black and white photographic paper

This was a test print before I took it to silk screening.

Counterweights (1980)
silk-screen print on paper

I printed, by enlarger projection, the small Tonal Filters onto 11"x14" litho film. I set up a registration system for my silk-screen printing and used each of these new "Filter Masters" to print a photo-sensitive silk screen stencil. I used Ulano Blue for that. I would then run one color and repeat the process for the next filter.

Rock (1980)
black and white photographic paper

The orginal is a black and white negative I shot in medium format near the tide pools in Palos Verde, CA. This was a test print before I took the image to the silk-screen process.

Rock (1980)
silk-screen print on matte board

The orginal is a black and white negative I shot in medium format near the tide pools in Palos Verde, CA.

In Sculpture (1980)
color photographic paper

Another color print using color cutt-off filters.

Counterweights (2017)
screen print on paper

I used the same Master Filters to create another version of this image. Note that I reversed it, left to right from the earlier version.

Prison (2017)
screen prints

I used the same Master Filters 40 years later, this time going to silk-screen prints. This is a progress photo of that process.

Prison (2017)
screen prints

A more completed version of the above print.

Window Washer (2023)
black and white photographic paper

This was created as part of this current project.

Flanges (2023)
black and white photographic paper

This was created as part of this current project along with the, above, Window Washer. I consider it a work in progress but it does illustrate what the process can do.

Boot 01 (2023)
black and white photographic paper

A test run of this image.

Garage 01 (2023)
black and white photographic paper

I've done a straight photo of this abandoned garage in Fromberg, MT as well as a sketch/watercolor and I'm still fiddling with what I want to do with it.
